Message from the Interim Head of School

WWHEN I JOINED Country Day more than 20 years ago to oversee the financial and operations side of the school, I never thought I would one day serve as your Interim Head of School. But last year, when asked to step up into the role, I saw it as an honor and a privilege to do my part for a school community that has meant so much to me for over two decades.

One of the reasons it was an easy “yes” is because I am surrounded by outstanding and dedicated employees, the very best Administrative Council, and a hardworking and dedicated Board of Trustees. I am particularly leaning on our superb administrative team to help me make good day-to-day decisions. They are all truly professionals in their areas and self-starters who know how to get the job done, and I trust in their leadership to serve our students and community well.

Another reason I am able to serve as your Interim Head and CFO this year is because Country Day is in such a position of strength. The admissions pipeline is stronger than ever, our campus facilities improvements have impacted students and learning in demonstrable ways, and the generous philanthropic support of our community helps us deliver a great educational experience every day.

Even as we face the challenge of another school year managing through the pandemic, we have the technology, talent, and infrastructure to mitigate risk for our students and teachers and keep them in school learning, just as we did last year. Our final major construction project is also on track to open this year. We anticipate the new Performance Gym to be operational in midwinter, and the Klein Aquatic Center to open in the spring.

My job this year is to make sure we don’t lose any ground. As your Interim Head of School, I pledge to you that I will do my very best to serve you well and give my all to deliver the school experience you expect from Country Day. I’m very excited about the appointment of Marcel Gauthier as our next Head of School. He is a proven school leader who fully understands both the academic needs and business needs of a complex school like Country Day. The Administrative Council and I are committed to delivering our mission and ensuring that the school is in great shape for Marcel to lead.

Class of 2021: The Future Looks Bright!

After months of adjusting to the challenges of the 2020–21 school year and showing resilience and perseverance during a global pandemic, the Class of 2021 celebrated with an outdoor Commencement ceremony on May 21, 2021. With family members sitting in pods in Belk Stadium and on the track to ensure health and safety precautions, students, parents, faculty, and administration enjoyed being together in person to honor our outstanding graduates.

127 SENIORS submitted 1,025 applications, averaging 8 applications per student

They attend 66 different colleges and universities in 22 different states and Washington, DC.

The Class was admitted to 168 different colleges and universities.

68% of the class attends colleges and universities outside of North Carolina.

40% of the class attends private universities; 60% attend public institutions.

The class received nearly $10.6 million in scholarship offers based on academic merit, athletic abilities, or special talents.

Laura Saavedra ’21

Accepts Morehead-Cain and Coca-Cola Foundation Scholarships

Laura Saavedra ’21 is the 32nd Country Day senior to be offered the prestigious and highly selective Morehead-Cain Scholarship to attend UNC-Chapel Hill. In fact, she is the seventh Country Day recipient in nine years.

YYET, AS IMPRESSIVE as this achievement is, it was not a done deal for Laura given the many options she had for her college studies. Laura is also Country Day’s first recipient of the Coca-Cola Foundation Scholarship, one of the top honors for high school seniors in the country. Less than 1/6 of 1 percent of applicants are selected for this extremely competitive award. It gives Laura $20,000 to apply toward the college of her choice, and she was accepted at such highly selective schools as Stanford and Harvard. Since the Morehead-Cain fully funds all costs associated with undergraduate study at UNC-Chapel Hill for four years and includes additional programs such as four years of summer enrichment opportunities, Laura will use her Coca-Cola Foundation scholarship toward medical school.

Laura, who is of Colombian heritage, was also selected as a 2020 Latinx 20 Under 20 Listmaker. Each year, LatinxEd elevates the best and brightest Latinx students across North Carolina, selecting 20 students under 20 years old who have a powerful vision and commitment to uplifting the Latinx community.

Scholar, Leader, Change Agent

At Country Day, Laura was president of the Hispanic and/or Latinx Alliance (HOLA), a member of the International Studies Board, part of the Student Diversity Awareness Executive Board, an admissions ambassador, and varsity girls’ soccer team manager. She was a top

scholar inducted into the school’s Cum Laude Society. At Commencement, she was honored with the Head of School’s Award for her outstanding contributions to all phases of school life.

In addition to the huge contributions she made at school, Laura is devoted to helping the community around her. She is a volunteer tutor at Levine Children’s Hospital and organizes a summer camp, Aprende Jugando, for underprivileged kids. She is the co-owner of By Immigrant Hands, a clothing company she started in September 2019 with Manolo Betancur to empower immigrants and give back to a community that’s given so much to her and her family. All proceeds benefit charities that support the needs of immigrants.

Laura is also passionate about the climate crisis and its intersectional effects. She is the co-coordinator of Extinction Rebellion Youth Charlotte and a national action coordinator for Extinction Rebellion Youth US—a movement that strives to combat climate justice by using nonviolent direct action to hold corporations and politicians accountable. She is also a group

leader and soon-to-be lead consultant at STEER (Students Teaching Equitable Education Reform). She led the creation of this student-run consulting firm, received grant money, and is working with her team to launch it in the near future.

While Laura successfully managed school life and fights tirelessly for social change, she is also in constant pain. Five years ago, a soccer injury and subsequent surgeries and medical procedures have left her with chronic hip pain. Even so, she wrote in her scholarship application: “I’ve spent over 1,819 days of my life walking with an assistive device, pushing myself in a wheelchair, or riding a scooter. I’ve seen over 20 doctors and 10 therapists, had 11 MRIs, and taken countless pills. I have done it all and I’m worse than I was, but I won’t stop fighting anytime soon.”

Boys’ Tennis State Title Highlights Strong Spring Season Finish

A team state championship in Boys’ Tennis, runner-up state finishes in Girls’ Lacrosse and Girls’ Track and Field, and several individual state Track and Field titles highlighted a busy postseason stretch for Country Day’s spring sports.

TTHE BOYS’ tennis team beat Greensboro Day to win the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) Division I championship, capping off a 17–0 season. The Bengals—whose only regular season loss this year was at the hands of Country Day—jumped out to a 2–1 lead after doubles competition.

Country Day rallied in singles with victories at Line 3 (Nathan Jackson ’22), then Line 2 (Noah McDonald ’24), and then Line 5 (Aaryan Chopra ’24). With the teams tied 4–4, Sammy Baumstein ’21, closed out the match in dramatic fashion with a third-set tiebreak win at Line 6. The championship was the program’s third in the past four

years—a streak of titles interrupted only by the pandemic-forced cancellation of the NCISAA championships in spring 2020. It is the program’s 20th state title overall.

Girls’ Lacrosse, a frequent championship contender, squared off against reigning state champion, Charlotte Latin. Country Day opened the scoring in the first half before the Hawks responded and took a 7–4 lead into halftime. The Bucs came out of the gate strong in the second half, tying the score at 11 midway through the frame before the Hawks pulled away late for an eventual 18–12 victory. Country Day finished the season with a 14–7 overall record.

In Track and Field, Country Day earned a second-place team finish for the girls and a third-place team finish for the boys. The day was highlighted by several strong individual event performances, including state championships for Carter Gallo ’22 (Boys’ Pole Vault), Spencer Mermans ’23 (Boys’ Discus), Kaia Putman ’21 (Girls’ 100m), Harper Shaw ’22 (Girls’ 800m), Katie Sluder ’22 (Girls’ High Jump), the Girls’ 4X100m Relay (Putman, Linde Fonville ’22, Lela McMichael ’23, Azariah Miller ’22), and the Girls’ 4X800m Relay (Emma Lewis ’24, Ava Goggin ’24, Anna Maynard ’22, Addison Pignetti ’21).

Country Day’s five other spring sports qualified for postseason competition and achieved the following results:

Baseball reached the quarterfinal round of the NCISAA 4A playoffs and finished the year with a 14–11 record.

Boys’ Golf competed in the NCISAA 4A championships with a fifth-place team showing.

Boys’ Lacrosse made the quarterfinals and finished the season with a 12–9 record.

Girls’ Soccer played in the quarterfinal round and finished the season with nine wins against seven losses.

A first-round bye placed Softball in the quarterfinals, and they finished the year with a 10–6 record.

Country Day finished the year as the runner-up in the 4A division of the NCISAA’s Wells Fargo Cup competition, which awards points for postseason finishes across all sports. The Bucs’ second place finish in the competition matched their finish from 2018-19, the last time the scoring covered a full three seasons.

Country Day hosts Olsen Champions Back-To-Basics Football Camp

In July, Country Day hosted the Olsen Champions Back-To-Basics Football Camp for athletes ages 7 to 14. The weeklong camp teaches young athletes the principles of offense and defense, with positionspecific coaching and a great deal of fun! This annual event helps support the work of The HEARTest Yard initiative at Levine Children’s Hospital, which was created by Greg and Kara Olsen to support families of children with congenital heart disease. Their son TJ, third grade, had a successful heart transplant this past summer. All proceeds from the camp were donated to The HEARTest Yard with care and research and showing support for TJ, the Olsen family, and others in their situation.

We are also grateful to the Olsens for their generosity in support of our student-athletes. The training room in the new Performance Gym and Klein Aquatic Center will be named in their honor when it opens in winter 2022.

Celebrating Veterans, Inspiring Heroes of the Future

EEVERY YEAR, students in all divisions take part in educational and service activities to learn about and honor all the veterans who have sacrificed to serve and protect us. Often this includes assemblies and class visits by alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and grandparents who have served. For instance, Eric Strumpf ’89, who served in the Air Force for 20 years, has spoken to students about the power of kindness and the duty of each of them to stand up to unkindness, bullying, and intolerance with conviction and courage. In recent years, Middle and Upper School students were inspired by the story of 1st Lieutenant Lindsey Jefferies, the first African-American female pilot for the North Carolina Army National Guard. “It’s the true meaning of service when you put your country and its wellbeing ahead of yourself. Sharing this example with our students is important,” said Matt Less, Head of Upper School. While the pandemic health measures have limited assemblies in the past

two years, Lower School still celebrates Veterans Day in multiple ways, such as wearing red, white, and blue; hosting Zoom calls with family members who have served in the military; and writing letters of appreciation to service members. “Making time to honor veterans shows students concretely what it means to serve others and make sacrifices for the larger community,” said Bill Mulcahy, Head of Lower School.

Bissell Campus has many murals, one of which is the Veterans Wall of Honor, which recognizes alumni, faculty, and others in the community who have served in the military. The wall was initiated by Head of Middle School Warren Sepkowitz and teachers Art Hoffman and Mike Hennessey. Past parent Mary Tabor Engel was also enormously involved in the research to bring the wall to life.

Earlier this year, Facilities and Plant Operations Manager Greg Walters presented a flag he received while serving in the Air Force to third-grade students in Amy Ilfeld and Catherine Upchurch’s class.

“In celebrating our veterans, we’re helping students make the connection between those who came before us and sacrificed immensely so that we have the opportunity to live in a democratic society,” said Warren.

Lower School science teacher Lori Townsend, who often leads the planning of the Veterans Day activities, said, “We look forward to honoring the many heroes among us, both past and present, in hopes that we will inspire the heroes of the future.”

School in the Woods:

Fifth Graders Share Advice from Their Experience

FFROM DISCOVERING North Carolina’s Outer Banks to hiking the Great Wall of China, getting out there is a cherished Country Day tradition. In Middle School, the fifth and sixth grade takes part in School in the Woods—a mix of learning, risk-taking, class bonding and well, Middle School silliness. After the experience, students spend time reflecting on their time. Here are a few excerpts from this year’s fifth graders.

What advice would you give next year’s 5th graders about School in the Woods?

•Be open-minded to all the activities. Also, if you go fishing, go far down by the end dock—a lot of fish were under the rocks there.

•To listen, have fun, be a leader, make good choices, and be the best you.

•I would say that you should participate in everything! Also, definitely try the Alpine Tower!

What did you learn from School in the Woods? (This can be educational or not.)

•I learned that I am not that afraid of heights anymore.

What other feedback would you like for your teachers to know about your experience?

•It was fun and I learned more than I thought I would.

•I liked meeting new people in my grade and doing the zipline.

•It was amazing. You should extend nature art and canoeing (those were my favorite classes).

•Thank you for taking us on this field trip.

•It was so fun and amazing to be there.

•Overall, I just think it was fun and awesome!

•I had lots of fun doing everything there, and I’m grateful that we got to go.

•I absolutely loved it. Could we go on more field trips this year?

•Some feedback I would give is I had so much fun and NO negative feedback.

Thank You for Your Belief in our Mission

Message from the Board of Trustees Chair Scott Stevens

AS I ENTER my final year as chair of the Board of Trustees, I am reflective of all that has transpired over the past two school years and grateful for the strength and commitment of our Country Day community. Amidst the largest and most transformative capital campaign in our school’s history and record-breaking admissions inquiries and enrollment, we also weathered the tremendous challenge of responding to and navigating through in-person learning during a global pandemic.

When we began the 2020–21 school year, we knew we would face a challenge like none other in our school’s long history. I can’t thank the faculty, staff, and administration enough for their tremendous hard work, diligence, and flexibility to provide in-person learning for our students. They couldn’t do it without the support, commitment, and trust of the parent community. Together, our strong school/parent partnership allowed Country Day to deliver its mission for our students.

We can also be proud of the continued financial strength of our school, which helped us to successfully navigate an

unprecedented challenge. The 2020-21 school year brought the largest enrollment in school history and our admissions pipeline is exceedingly strong with over 96% reenrollment and record applications (see page 16 for details). Support for the Country Day Fund reached nearly $2 35 million. Your annual support is a tremendous vote of confidence in the faculty and staff’s ability to provide our students with an exceptional education. Thank you to everyone who makes Country Day a philanthropic priority.

And even as we have had to deal with challenges, we have remained focused on our strategic priorities. Last year I shared with you that the Board had established a task force to assess and monitor our school’s progress toward meeting our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals. In February 2021, the Board issued a report on our findings and our strategic priorities for continued improvement. Our continued progress is detailed on page 26.

Last year, the Board was also challenged to find our next head of school, after Mark Reed announced he was stepping down after a highly impactful 12-year tenure. I

am confident our legacy of strong leadership will continue with the hiring of Marcel Gauthier, who will begin his tenure in July 2022. Marcel is the right leader to build on the momentum established with our most recent strategic plan and to take us to even greater heights. You can read more about Marcel on page 22

Finally, I’d like to recognize trustees who rolled off the board in June 2021, for their tremendous service and vision in helping to make Country Day a school others seek to emulate. Thank you to: Todd Gorelick (2002), Wellford Tabor (2009), David Benson (2011), Edison Cassels (2013), Ameesha Kansupada (2013), Adelle Anthony-Williams (2014), Ken Garcia (2014), Christi Byron (2015), Catherine Stempien (2015), and Leigh Moran (2019). 2020/21 SUMMARY OF GIVING

Tuition, which covers 81% of our annual budget, plays the largest role in our ability to serve our mission. Philanthropic support plays a critical role in augmenting tuition revenue to help fund exceptional opportunities for Country Day students.

CCOUNTRY DAY continues to enjoy record inquiries and applications, and though we had to be innovative this year, we were able to give families a warm reception as they learned more about our school and the application process. We held nearly 40 virtual events, which allowed prospective families to attend from the comfort of their homes or offices or to watch the recorded event later. Since we couldn’t host families on campus, we developed a virtual Talk and Tour presented individually over Zoom. The admissions team met with hundreds of families for 60 to 90 minutes for wonderful conversations about our school. A highlight of the Admissions season was the Welcome Parade we hosted for newly admitted JK and K families. What a joy it was to see our newest families so excited to be joining our Country Day family.

Among all the investments that are made at Country Day, none have a more lasting impact than the resources we add to the school’s endowment. An endowment fund can be compared to a long-term investment or savings plan. It is a “permanent” fund in which the principal is invested and the earnings are spent. A strong endowment ensures Country Day’s long-term strength and stability. Through decades of generous philanthropy, sound investment practices, and thoughtful long-term planning, Country Day has built financial reserves that provide essential funding across the life of our school.

The Gladys Tillett Coddington Memorial Scholarship Fund

As a former member of the Board of Trustees, past Parents’ Association President and Honorary Alumna, Gladys Tillett Coddington was a dynamic leader in the Country Day community

when her children, Charles Coddington ’64, Gladys Coddington Harper ’66, Bill Coddington ’68, and Henry Coddington ’70, were students. Her family’s legacy at Country Day continues through her grandson Coddy Coddington, Upper School history teacher and department chair, and her great-grandchildren Avery ’27, Chloe ’27, and Estelle ’30.

With a lead gift from her son Charles, her family established the Gladys Tillett Coddington Memorial Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance to a qualified and deserving Upper School student, with consideration to students who make Country Day a more diverse and inclusive community.

This generous gift ensures that her legacy continues and will enhance our school forever. Country Day is grateful to receive this gift as it beautifully aligns with our Affirmation of Community.

Country Day has been a key block in building a solid learning foundation for each of us. In my case, it was the door opening my interest in biology and science. Hopefully this scholarship will allow other children to have that same sense of awakening. Making the scholarship in our mother’s name completes an idea and motivation that she had as a Board member years ago, which sought to encourage a wide diversity of individuals and backgrounds to attend Country Day, allowing both the school and students to benefit.

Recognizing Leadership through Endowment

Joe Miller ’95 passed away in 2020 after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Known as the life of every party, Joe was adored by all who knew him in the Country Day community. He was Senior Class president, recipient of the Head of School’s Award, and his senior superlative was Most Likely to Succeed. He was also an Eagle Scout, president of multiple clubs, a four-year Varsity Track athlete, and a member of the National Honor Society. His wife Lisa, family, and friends have initiated the Joe Miller ’95 Memorial Scholarship. When funded, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who displays leadership qualities, academic achievement, and, above all, a great love of life.

Members of the Class of 1995 gathered video messages with favorite memories and words of encouragement for Joe before his passing. They gathered with his friends and family on August 28, 2021, to celebrate his life.

Derek McGarry ’95 shared, “Joe was a beacon of hope and strength for anyone who crossed his path. He worked hard and

played hard, but he loved even harder. He inspired me and many of us here to become closer to friends and family. I think the biggest message I got from Joe over his last few years was that everyone matters… everyone needs love and support in hard times. Joe gave us a master class on how to live and love.”

Country Day’s Next Head of School

On August 26, after a robust international search for Country Day’s 12th Head of School, the Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Marcel Gauthier, who will begin his tenure in July 2022. A dynamic leader and educator, Marcel currently serves as Head of School at Shanghai American School, the flagship independent school in Shanghai with an enrollment of over 2,800 students and two campuses.

incredible depth in school leadership experience combined with the genuine heart of an educator. He is known for his strategic vision, ability to build stronger institutions, and skill in coalescing communities.

Marcel’s path to Country Day began much the same way as that of many Country Day families—a decision to attend private school. Marcel grew up in a small town, where his father was a professor of foreign language at Hiram College in Ohio for over 30 years. For high school, his father suggested Marcel consider Western Reserve Academy (WRA), a nearby boarding school. “It more or less changed my life,” says Marcel. “I met teachers who challenged me, who cared deeply, and who were passionate about what they did. I found activities and passions there that I didn’t know were important to me and I carried those with me into college.”

One of those passions was long-distance running, in which Marcel set records at WRA that lasted 25 years. An avid athlete, Marcel also practices martial arts and has black belts in Taekwondo and Hapkido.

Marcel continued as a collegiate athlete at Dartmouth, where he ran middle and long distances. Academically, he had the opportunity to do some teaching under the direction of John Rassias, who developed the Rassias Method for engaging students in language. “I found that I loved teaching and that I had a talent for it,” says Marcel.

After graduation, luck was on Marcel’s side when he showed up for an educator’s hiring fair in Boston. Just as he was walking in, his headmaster from WRA was walking out and announced he had just transferred to Brentwood School in Los Angeles. Marcel laughs, “He said, ‘I need an English teacher and a cross-country coach in La La Land; what do you think?’”

MAfter four years of teaching, Marcel decided he wanted to focus on his writing. He headed to grad school in Greensboro to earn his MFA in poetry, a lifelong artistic passion of his. Marcel, a published poet, carves out several hours a week from his busy schedule to read and write poetry. “If I can take my mind off the work for an hour and be fully present in that moment, I can come back to the work with a fresh perspective,” he explains.

While at UNC-Greensboro, Marcel met his wife Sharol, also a writer and educator. They married in 1993 and have two daughters, Sophie, 22, and Colette, 20. The family has lived in Virginia, South Carolina, Utah, and Shanghai, as Marcel grew professionally. “Part of my journey has always been to look toward the

next step, the next challenge; to join schools where I could bring my gifts and which would be a good fit in terms of philosophy and also meet the needs of my family,” he explains. For instance, Marcel has a love of outdoors and enjoys hiking. He wanted his daughters to have a sense of mountains and the vastness of the West, which led him to accepting a position at the Waterford School outside Salt Lake City. “It was a good choice,” he says with a smile. “The school has a strong focus on the performing arts and the outdoors. My daughters discovered a love of both while there.”

Proven Leader

Early in his teaching career Marcel took on projects, such as designing and rolling out a new senior seminar curriculum and overseeing reaccreditation, that helped to hone his leadership skills. “I liked the challenge of uniting people around an idea or common purpose; I’m energized by that.” Marcel says it is very important to him to engage in a way that does justice to the people around him. “For me that’s different than pleasing them, because sometimes you’re doing the right thing, but you’re not always making everyone happy in the short term,” he says. “It’s important to honor a community where it is, but also inspire it to embrace the journey ahead.”

In the 20 years since taking his first administrative position as Head of Upper School at Spartanburg Day School, Marcel has garnered a reputation as a collaborative, strategic leader who understands how to intersect culture and craft, and who is driven by a strong moral compass. He is also known for his sophisticated and nuanced understanding of diversity and inclusion, and his financial and operational acumen in large, complex environments.

“I’ve always wanted to serve in some way,” says Marcel. “I think one reason I have been successful in leadership is that I have great faith in others. Good leaders realize their strengths and limitations, put those on the table openly, surround

themselves with talented people, and then empower them.”

While leading, Marcel is also growing. “I see myself as a continuous learner. We should all be humbled by the fact that there is always more to learn.”

In his first few months at Country Day, Marcel plans to have lots of conversations, both in groups and individually, to be present in a lot of places and witness the school in action. “The first stage is a learning stage and a being present stage,” he says. “I like to tell people ahead of time what I want to know so that when I’m out and about, people already have a couple of questions or thoughts that they’re eager to share.”

By the second part of his first year, Marcel intends to start thinking more carefully about the key strategic areas we want to unite around as a community. “I want to finish my first year by coming back to the community and saying, ‘here are the things I’ve learned, here are the things that are extraordinary, and here are the areas that can be even more extraordinary.’”

Due to the global pandemic, Marcel has been unable to leave China. He has not been able to see his family for more than 18 months, which has been hard. He said in a letter to the community, “Although I can’t be there in person at this moment, I am with you in spirit.”

On November 11, we held a virtual Q & A session with Marcel for the community to get to know him better. (Visit charlottecountryday.org for the recorded session.) Should travel restrictions lift in such a way that allow for an in-person visit this school year without compromising his duties in Shanghai, Marcel will take advantage of the opportunity.

“I can’t wait to step foot on the Country Day campuses and engage with the community,” he says. “I’m incredibly excited to call Charlotte my home.”

After preliminary vetting by Spencer Stuart and Search Committee co-chairs, the first-round candidates met with both the Search Committee and Faculty Advisory Council in a structured interview protocol designed to assess candidate accomplishments, how they achieved outcomes, and the likely fit to Country Day. Second round and finalist round interviews focused on strategic vision and candidate-specific discussion.

DEI Strategic Plan

At Country Day, our dedication to academic excellence is inseparable from our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, as stated in our Affirmation of Community. It is central to our mission as an educational institution to ensure that each member of our community has the full opportunity to thrive in our environment; for we believe that diversity is key to individual achievement, educational excellence, and the advancement of knowledge.

Charlotte Country Day School’s Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) is guided by one vision, four overarching goals, and three overarching strategies and fundamental approaches—all of which emerged from the input of a year-long process focused on listening, reflecting, and acting.

STRATEGY

Overarching Goals = DEIB

These key objectives not only guided the yearlong process, they have served as our touchstones throughout the initial year of plan implementation. All aspects of this plan are based on student and family experience. The student experience is the most important measurement for determining our success in achieving our Mission and Affirmation of Community.

Diversity: We commit to increasing diversity, which is expressed in myriad forms, including race and ethnicity, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, language, culture, national origins, religious commitments, age, disability status, and political perspective.

Equity: We commit to working actively to challenge and respond to bias, harassment, and discrimination through reevaluation of school systems, policies, processes, curriculum, and communications. We are committed to a policy of equal opportunity and equitably applied resources for all.

Inclusion: We commit to pursuing deliberate efforts to ensure that our campus is a place where differences are welcomed, where different perspectives are respectfully heard, and where every individual feels a sense of belonging and inclusion as a binding principle.

Belonging: We seek to elevate our Affirmation of Community and its expression in the life of the school by building a climate and culture of understanding, empathy, and acceptance. We commit to promoting a deep sense of belonging for all and giving assurance to all community members they will be seen, heard, valued, and secure.

Create a Healthy, Inclusive, and Equitable Campus Climate and Culture

We will continue working to create an environment in which all community members are welcomed and supported. We will seek and value differing perspectives and contributions.

Recruit, Retain, and Develop a Diverse Community Building on our past efforts, we will promote an ever more diverse student, faculty, and staff community and equip individuals with the support and opportunities necessary for their success.

Support Innovative and Inclusive Teaching and Learning

Building upon our strong foundation, we will further enhance and be vigilant in assuring that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are core aspects of our educational program offerings and teaching methodology. In formulating the strategy, we will use a variety of methods to assess needs and determine appropriate actions.

3 Approaches

We have committed to a fundamental approach that will allow us to operationalize our strategies and institutionalize them for more long-term shifts and tangible outcomes.

Reinvesting in Foundational Programs: Reinvesting in fundamental programs is critical to our success in attaining the goals and strategies of the DEIB plan.

Building Infrastructure: Building upon and reinforcing the foundational infrastructure necessary for long-term institutional change.

Tracking Metrics, Accountability, and Reporting: The school will continue to track and enhance—over time—key metrics that represent important factors in assessing progress toward our DEIB goals. We will use these metrics to determine whether specific shifts up or down, or lack of activity, represent positive or negative outcomes relative to creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive school community.

Belonging & Community: The Heart of This Work

The establishment of Country Day’s DEIB Strategic Plan includes a new staff addition to the Office of Diversity Planning aimed at supporting the director of Diversity Planning and ensuring the strategic plan’s strategies and approaches are met across each division. In the spring of 2021, the Board of Trustees approved the development of an associate director of Diversity Planning position for Country Day. After a thorough search, the Office of Diversity Planning welcomed back Tianna Butler for this important role.

Tianna previously joined Country Day in 2013 as a Hearst Teaching Fellow from Davidson College, working closely with Bonnie Duckworth (retired) in the Lower School theater program and with Jenny Goodfellow, who directed the Middle School theater program at the time. Tianna became the Lower School theater director from 2014–16 working with students in junior kindergarten through fourth grade. After five years away in Washington, DC, working first as a second-grade teacher and then as National Presbyterian School’s associate director of Admissions & Diversity Coordinator, Tianna is thrilled to be back in a community she loves doing the work she is passionate about.

In this new role, Tianna strives to build relationships and community in a multitude of ways. “My goal is to touch every area and every corner of this school as a support system, as a friend, as an encourager, as an inquirer, and as a builder of community,” she says. “That means active listening and an openness to a variety of perspectives, thoughts, beliefs, and ideas. I want to find the fibers of our community that connect us, but also recognize the fibers that highlight the beauty of our differences and begin to build a community-wide quilt of belonging.”

Examples of how Tianna is connecting with students across divisions include playing a game of Gaga ball with second graders during recess, hanging out with fifth- and sixth-grade students during School in the Woods, and experiencing the critical-thinking skills of the math students in Mr. Stuke’s ninth- and tenthgrade Honor’s Geometry classes. In just a few months,

Tianna has shown she understands that relationships are the heart of this work—on the playground, in the classroom, and in the community.

Institution-wide Commitment

While Country Day is fortunate to have the guidance of a Diversity Planning office, the work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is an institution-wide commitment, and it’s important for each division to have the support they need to carry out the goals of the DEIB Strategic Plan. With this in mind, a restructuring of DEIB teams and team leaders occurred across divisions to ensure a high level of support and guidance for students, faculty, and staff.

Division leaders and members regularly meet those in their respective divisions and across divisions to check in and discuss the alignment of goals, strategies, and opportunities to develop a rich and inclusive academic and social experience for all students at Country Day. Between administrative and divisional leadership, Country Day is poised to continue the great work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for all in the school community.

Celebrating our History and Looking to the Future

e may never know what happened to the items in the 1981 time capsule, but what do you do when buried treasure goes missing? Rally, pivot, and improvise! On September 23, members of the community gathered in person and via Zoom to recognize the 80th anniversary of Country Day, celebrate our Alumna of the Year, and dedicate new time capsule items.

The event began with Danielle S. Ferguson, director of Alumni Relations, acknowledging those who were present back in 1981. This included retirees Patsy Ratteree, Linda Wolf, Linda Pelletier, Carol Morris, and Paulette Beatty, as well as alumni spanning several class years. She went on to introduce Alumna of the Year Dr. Neely Kaydos-Daniels ’91, who flew in from Bangladesh for the occasion.

Neely struck a chord with the audience when she focused on the misses, rather than the triumphs in her life. Although she did not win the science awards, that experience taught her how to be comfortable in front of a crowd. It is the times when she did not do well, didn’t make the team, and was not invited to join the choir that have served Neely well on the long, winding path of her career. Those experiences taught her to keep trying.

Next, Carol Morris, retired Middle School teacher and assistant Head of School, addressed the disappointment felt by some alumni, saying, “While the contents of the time capsule may be missing; the memories will always be with us. The capsule was intended to celebrate Founder’s Day; we can celebrate that you were the founders of the Middle School. It was

1981...you were our first students to build the history of a new beginning for grades 5–8. Be proud of all that you established in your years of firsts, celebrate the camaraderie and friendships that you still carry with you from that time, and recognize your role as important founders of Charlotte Country Day Middle School. The morning program concluded with Head of Middle School Warren Sepkowitz and Middle School student representatives Tyler Bianchi ’29, Addie Lane ’28, Morgan Williams ’27, and Owen Timperman ’26 sharing the contents for our new time capsule:

• 5th grade: a photo book of advisory groups, USB drive with the class doing a Tik Tok dance

• 6th grade: map of the Bissell Campus, Apple Air Pods

• 7th grade: PE shirt signed by the entire class, five e-mails spanning 18 months to show the effect COVID-19 had on the school community

• 8th grade: class portrait, list of predictions for the future

The vessel will be opened in 2041 to celebrate Country Day’s 100th Anniversary.

Connecting with Today’s Students

Over her two-day visit, Neely met with students in all three divisions. Lower School scientists were excited to learn that she uses the same scientific method they were taught. Neely explained the importance of having similar processes so scientists in different places can share relevant information. When a second grader asked what an important part of her job is, Neely said, “Not giving up.” She went on to explain that scientists can have many setbacks; maybe lab equipment gets broken, or the results of an experiment are not what is expected. She told students that is when you stop and think about why it didn’t work, apply the scientific method, and correct your mistakes to learn how to do the task better.

Technology allowed Neely to reach all Middle School advisories for an assembly program moderated by Warren Sepkowitz. She concluded with a quote from the French author, Colette, which has been a driving force in her life. It reads, “You will do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm.” Neely encouraged

DR. NEELY KAYDOS-DANIELS ’91 ALUMNA OF THE YEAR

Dr. Neely Kaydos-Daniels ’91 is an epidemiologist who serves as the country director at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Bangladesh. She is the former associate director for Strategic Information within the Division of Global HIV and TB at CDC—Ethiopia, acting country director, acting director for the Division of Global Health Protection, and director of the Influenza Program for the CDC’s Central America office, located in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Dr. Kaydos-Daniels has 20 years of experience working in public health program management, surveillance, preparedness/response, and research to positively impact the health of individuals and populations. Her substantive experience focuses on applied public health surveillance, capacitybuilding, applied research, infectious disease epidemiology, and outbreak preparedness and response both in domestic and international settings.

Norma Mackenzie taught science at Country Day for 34 years before retiring in 2006. After a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, she passed away on August 4 at Sunrise on Providence Assisted Living surrounded by her loving family. We are grateful for the impact “Mrs. Mack” had on the lives of so many students as she shared her passion for science, her innovative spirit, and her bright outlook.
