Providing shopping and prescription delivery in the Builth Area.

I hope you’re all safe and well.

This week saw communities coming together (albeit in their respective gardens) for the VE Day Celebrations, it was a special day for all and the all day sunshine was perfect! I kept my children busy baking all morning for our tea party in the garden. The day was an opportunity to reflect on what is most important to us and what we have, thanks to those who fought for us.

Keeping my family safe is my main priority and making my children smile and laugh each day helps us all through this. I’m enjoying spending time with them doing puzzles, baking and just being silly. The homework is a challenge on times as I guess many of you are finding too. I hope our antics stay with them as they grow and the life skills we’re currently teaching them will help them in the future appreciate what they have and what you need!

Builth Wells Key Worker Scarecrows As this year’s carnival has been cancelled. The Friends of Builth primary school suggested we all get involved in making your very own key worker scarecrow.

Journey through Lock Down After reading the article from the Wales Millennium Centre in this issue, it got me thinking!

This would be a great idea for our community to do and come together once again.

To create an exhibition of a time line through lock down and to the future and how it has effected the town and community!

We would love to get as many people involved as possible, displaying a variety of media from all ages!

Easy millionaire’s shortbread Ingredients For the shortbread 250g plain flour 75g caster sugar 175g butter, softened For the caramel 100g butter or margarine 100g light muscovado sugar 2 x 397g cans condensed milk For the topping 200g plain or milk chocolate Method 1. Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Lightly grease a 33 x 23cm Swiss roll tin with a lip of at least 3cm.

2. To make the shortbread, mix 250g plain flour and 75g caster sugar in a bowl. Rub in 175g softened butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

3. Knead the mixture together until it forms a dough, then press into the base of the prepared tin.

4. Prick the shortbread lightly with a fork and bake for 20 minutes or until firm to the touch and very lightly browned.

Leave to cool in the tin.

5. To make the caramel, place 100g butter or margarine, 100g light muscovado sugar and two 397g cans condensed milk in a pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved.

6. Bring to the boil, stirring all the time, then reduce the heat and simmer very gently, stirring continuously, for about 5-10 minutes or until the mixture has thickened slightly. Pour over the shortbread and leave to cool.

7.For the topping, melt 200g plain or milk chocolate slowly in a bowl over a pan of hot water. Pour over the cold caramel and leave to set. Cut into squares or bars.

The world has gone mad for CBD Following the publication in 1964 of research papers

by Raphael Mechoulam, of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the world first started to hear about CBD – an active ingredient of the Cannabis sativa plant, which unlike its better known ingredient, THC, is a non-intoxicating compound. The now 90-year-old scientist was first in the world to isolate both THC and CBD - chemical compounds that occur naturally in the cannabis plant and, in the form of endocannabinoids, are created internally and completely naturally throughout the human body.

For many years no-one took a great deal of notice, largely because the Cannabis plant had become regulated as a Class 1 drug and was therefore illegal. That was until people started to discover that CBD helped manage chronic and even acute pain. It also helped considerably with a number of other ailments such as anxiety and controlling the spasmodic effects of diseases such as multiple sclerosis. As concerns increased over the use of opioid drugs to deal with a huge wave of anxiety, stress and depression, particularly in the USA, alternatives were sought and CBD became an “underground” sensation.

What is CBD? CBD is a non-addictive, natural product produced by extracting it from the whole Cannabis sativa plant. It has fewer side-effects than opioids and many pharmaceuticals and through its similarity to the body’s natural endocannabinoid system, it is readily accepted by the body’s systems.

Hemp Oil - Hemp Oil is pressed from the seeds and contains no THC. It is completely legal in the UK. Many food and household products contain Hemp Oil. CBD Oil – is produced by supercritical CO2 extraction from the whole plant. CBD is legal in the UK as long as it contains less than 0.2% of the psychotropic ingredient THC.

• Movement disorders - An increasing body of evidence suggests that cannabinoids have beneficial effects on the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, including spasticity and pain.

• Pain – For many people, their introduction to CBD is due to chronic pain. Arthritis, back pain, Lymphoedema, headaches and accidental muscular or bone damage have all responded well to CBD. Both my partner and I started using CBD to address pain. In my case due to arthritis and in my partner’s case due to cancer, deep vein thrombosis and lymphoedema. 3 years later we still use it regularly….

However, it should be recognised that much of the “evidence” for the many other benefits of CBD is from anecdotal evidence and via recommendations from those for whom it has worked well. Very little clinical research has been carried out which means that legally, in the UK, CBD must be sold as a nutritional supplement, rather than a medicine.

That being said, there are huge numbers of people who continue to buy and use CBD products because they help them cope with their various ailments.

1 lime, sliced ice Method 1. Put half the mango in a saucepan with the sugar and 100ml water. Cook for 8-10 mins then strain through a sieve and leave the liquid to cool.

2. Meanwhile, pour 500ml boiling water into a large heatproof jug and add the green tea leaves. Leave to steep for 5 mins, then strain into a large glass jug and add 300ml cold water. Leave to cool completely then put into the fridge to chill.

3. Once cold, add the strained mango syrup to the chilled tea, along with the rest of the chopped mango, fresh mint and the lime slices. Fill up the jug with ice, stir gently and serve.
