Get A FinAnciAl PhysicAl When it comes to the pregnancy “to do” list, getting a financial physical is “just as important, if not more important, than buying strollers, clothes and decorating the baby’s room,” says Court Creeden, a financial advisor with Parent Financial. This allows you to “gain clarity on where you are now as a couple and where you want to go as a family.” It also involves several key financial planning steps that parents of all income levels can and should take in preparation for baby’s first year.
creAte A BudGet “Having a baby means you’re going to have additional expenses that you didn’t have before,” says Nathan Farrior, a program manager with Durham Regional Financial Center. Preparing a budget during pregnancy gives you a chance to adjust for those added costs, and allows you to track and plan your expenses so you aren’t hit with too many surprises after baby arrives. Creeden suggests pricing out one-time and ongoing expenses related to the birth of your baby. This will help you determine if your dream nursery matches what you can really afford, and if all new clothes are truly necessary. Once you have a ballpark figure in mind for what your baby’s first year might
Prepare for the
expected
unexpected cost, allow for some extra. There are always surprises. To help you track specific known expenses and find out what your baby’s first year might cost, BabyCenter offers an online calculator at babycenter.com/baby-cost-calculator. Determining as many of those costs as possible and how they fit in your budget should guide many of the decisions you will make as new parents.
DECIDE ABOUT WORK Having a budget also helps expecting parents determine whether one spouse will be able to stay at home with the baby or cut back on work, if that’s what both parents want. Full-time daycare costs an average of $1,000 per month. Holly Nicholson, a certified financial planner from Raleigh, advises trying to live off one salary and “banking the other one” before baby arrives. This helps couples determine whether they can afford to have one parent stay home with the new baby and if any budgeting adjustments are necessary.
SAvE MORE, SpEnD LESS Living off one salary during pregnancy is also a great way to jumpstart the savings habit. If expectant parents
haven’t already started saving a little money each month for emergencies, now is the time to do it. Daniel Corley, a financial advisor from Chapel Hill, recommends putting away at least three to six months of expenses. While this is the general rule for everyone, he advises aiming for the higher amount in preparation for maternity leave. Retirement may be the furthest thought from many expecting parents’ minds, but saving for it should be a top priority. Nicholson advises putting at least 10 percent of your income into a 401(k) plan and/or a Roth IRA. If you can’t afford to do that, Corley advises setting an overall 10 percent savings goal for your baby’s first year. That should translate into 7-8 percent going toward retirement initially and 2-3 percent going toward education savings, such as a 529 plan. Once you establish that base, Corley advises adding 2 percent a year toward these goals over the next 10 years. In addition to saving money during pregnancy, living off one salary makes it possible to pay down credit card debt and other large, high-interest debts. Corley says you should have “zero credit card debt when the child arrives” because it’s a mistake to think you’re going to “get rid of it easily once the child gets here.”

EVALUATE BENEFITS Evaluating employee benefits is a crucial step during pregnancy. Start with your health insurance and find out how your plan covers delivery costs and the addition of a child to your policy. The next step is to figure out how much life insurance you have through work. Creeden warns that many people think they have plenty just because they have a policy through their employer, but are surprised when they find out how much it’s really worth. He cautions against taking someone else’s “guesstimate” for how much life insurance you need because every family’s needs are different. Know your regular expenses, future planned expenses and your family’s goals. Those numbers should dictate how much life insurance you need. Child care and health flexible spending accounts provide another way to save money because they allow you to pay for health care expenses with pre-tax dollars. Child care FSAs allow you to pay for daycare expenses with up to $5,000 pre-tax. Up until now, there wasn’t an official limit on how much you could contribute to a health FSA;
however, as part of the Affordable Care Act signed by President Obama, FSAs will incur annual limits of $2,500 a year starting Jan. 1, 2013. This limit is per individual, so each working spouse can elect to set aside up to $2,500. Going forward, that limit could rise annually based on inflation. FSAs will remain “useit-or-lose-it” accounts, so any unused balance for one year can’t be used to fund expenditures the next year.
MAkE A WILL Naturally, pregnancy is not a time when you want to think about “what if,” but it’s a must. “This is the time to write a will and designate a guardian” if something should happen to you or your spouse. As soon as your baby is born, finalize everything and be done with it — at least until the next baby comes along. Financial planning may seem like the most “un-exciting” thing you can do during pregnancy, but as Creeden says, you don’t want to wait until you’re in the wonderful “tornado of parenthood” before realizing what you need to do. Robyn Kinsey Mooring is a Durham-based writer and the mother of two boys.

Creative Memorabilia
Babies change in the blink of an eye, and there’s no easier way to see that than through photos. “Photographs are a moment in time captured forever,” says Nicole Rogers, a family and baby photographer and mother of one in Charlotte. “We can look back at them and remember what our children looked like at 6 months old, how they used to fit inside a basket or a chair. To capture the changes, take a photo of your baby once a month (or once a week if you’re feeling ambitious) in the same colored outfit and in the same location. By the end of the year, you’ll have an amazingly visual reminder of how much your child has grown. To note the specific months, weeks or milestones, make custom cards to place beside your baby in each photo. If you’re techsavvy, skip the cards and layer text over the photos using Photoshop or another photoediting program. Online retailers offer customized monthly bodysuits in corresponding sizes. You can even download free iron-on templates at marthastewart.com to craft the outfits yourself. Photos taken from each of your baby’s first 12 months can be used to create a calendar for the next year. Apple users can use iPhoto to select a group of photos and create a personalized calendar. Add notes to special dates and click to purchase when your design is complete. Snapfish.com, shutterfly. com and vistaprint.com offer similar services, as do retailers such as Kinkos, Walgreens and CVS. Shuttercal.com, another digital option, allows users to upload a photo each day, then organize the images in a calendar format.
Looking for a unique way to preserve special milestones and moments? The Patchwork Bear makes oneof-a-kind memory quilts and patchwork bears from outgrown baby clothes. Just send six to 10 outfits to the company’s headquarters in Princeton, N.J., and allow two to four weeks for completion and delivery. ($98; thepatchworkbear.com) The Paloma Poster is a fun, graphic way to chart facts and figures that make up your baby’s first year, such as head-circumference comparisons to favorite foods, depicted in line graph form. ($150, $45 for a standard milestone poster; strangebirdy.com)
craft it While scrapbooking can take up a lot of time, Tracy Gilley, owner of Scrapbook Traditions in Winston-Salem, says that might be just what a new mom needs. “Scrapbooking is a huge stress reliever, and ‘me time’ is vital, especially to new moms,” she says. Parents who feel overwhelmed but still

want to scrapbook the memories can take advantage of Scrapbook Traditions “scrap-for-hire” service. “We have a lot of new moms who hire us to scrapbook that first hectic year and then continue what we have begun for them on their own as their lives adjust,” she says. The full-service shop also offers customized papers, one-on-one appointments and baby showers during which every guest creates a spread for the mom-to-be. For busy parents, Creative Memories also offers quick-books with predecorated pages, stickers and accents to help simplify the process.
Digitize it Technology-based baby books are perfect for on-the-go parents who frequently use smartphones or tablet computers. Emmbook for Baby allows users to record milestones through text and photos, then share them electronically with family and friends. It also works as a diary for feedings, sleep, diaper changes and more. Baby Book for Android and Baby Milestones offer similar features. These apps allow you to manage details about your child, add events, browse your photo gallery to select pictures to share and more. A high-tech spin on traditional baby books is a digital photo album. It allows users to import their own photos into professionally designed pages and layouts, some more customized than others, available with hard or soft cover and available in various sizes. Shutterfly.com, snapfish.com, mixbook.com and vistaprint.com all offer babyspecific books and themes. Katrina Tauchen is a freelance writer, editor and new mom who lives in Durham. You want to keep your child in a rear-facing car seat for as long as possible, recommended age is 2. When he or she outgrows the seat, move your child to a forward-facing car seat. Make sure to attach the top tether after you tighten and lock the seat belt or lower anchors.
Once your car seat is installed, give it a good shake at the base. Can you move it more than an inch side to side or front to back? A properly installed seat will not move more than an inch.

Medical Must-Haves By Michele Huggins
As a mom-to-be you likely will be showered with adorable onesies, but be sure these items are in your medicine cabinet for baby – who will be crawling, walking and running before you know it.
for baby+ toddler
Thermometer
Nasal Aspirator
Cold Packs
A temperature is a true sign when a baby is sick, and a digital rectal thermometer provides the most accurate reading. A wide variety of rectal thermometers are available ranging in price from $5-$20. Ear or temporal-scan thermometers may be preferred for toddlers, but know they are often off by a few degrees. Safety1st ProGrade Complete Family Thermometer, safety1st.com, $44.99.
Before they can blow their own noses, a nasal aspirator is key to helping babies breathe – and feel – better when they are stuffed up. A bulb syringe is the most commonly used, but there are battery-operated versions and even some that work like a straw without actually getting the mucus in your mouth. Consider keeping some saline drops nearby too to help loosen mucus. Nose Frida Snot Sucker, fridababy.com, $15.
In no time, infants are crawling, then walking and running. Inevitably new walkers take a tumble or two. Be prepared with a couple reusable gel packs stowed away in the freezer. A cold gel pack minimizes swelling and is good relief after shots and on insect bites. Boo Boo Buddy, available at most retail stores, $5.
Fever Reducer When baby spikes a fever, you’ll be glad you have acetaminophen or ibuprofen on hand. Be very careful to follow dosage instructions on the boxes for the age and weight of your child. It is not recommended to give acetaminophen to babies under 3 months without doctor’s approval.
Humidifier When your child gets a cough or croup, adding moisture to the air can help. Humidifiers are also helpful during winter months when heated air reduces humidity levels throughout the house, making for uncomfortably dry throats and noses. Frog Prince, crane-usa.com, $45.99.

How to Create a
Good EatEr
I
am a picky eater. I think chocolate is a major food group and green beans should be declared a form of torture. But when I had my daughter, I knew I had to change so she would become a better eater than I am. Mostly through introducing a variety of foods at an early age, I now have a 6-year-old who lists asparagus and strawberries among her favorite foods. Registered dietitian Meredith Dolan, with Be Active Kids of North Carolina, agrees that introducing as many foods as you can as early as you can gives your baby the best chance to acquire a taste for a variety of foods. But, she emphasizes, “the best thing you can do you for your child is to be a role model.” Frequently serve and eat the same foods you want your children to eat. And be careful of facial expressions – don’t turn up your nose at a food then expect your little one to be excited about it! Babies can start eating vegetables, fruits and cereals at about 6 months
14
BABY&TODDLER 2013
|
CharlotteParent.com
then add proteins at about 9 months. Dolan, a mother of three, suggests starting a meal with vegetables and proteins then have fruits at the end, because most babies naturally favor sweeter foods. A good way to introduce your baby and toddler to different foods is to make your own baby food. North Carolina has an abundance of farmer’s markets offering in-season fruits and vegetables. Steam peeled and diced fruits and vegetables and pop them into a food processor to make purees the right consistency. This is a good time to add spices or mix flavors, says Dolan, though avoid salt. Then divide the puree into individual freezable containers or ice cube trays and freeze. The process is simple, economical and allows parents to better control what their children are eating. It doesn’t necessarily mean a child doesn’t like a food if he rejects it. It can take 10-15 exposures before he may enjoy it. Reintroduce the food often and
try presenting it in different ways – but don’t hide it, warns Dolan. While this trick can lead to better nutrition, it doesn’t develop better eating behaviors. It’s OK to add extra vegetables to pasta sauce, just be open about it. Lincolnton mom Kirby Scotton uses other techniques for getting 2-year-old Evie to eat a wider variety of foods. “I try to make mealtime as interesting as possible,” she says, “by making it playful and using colors and themes on her plate.” Another technique is to make one food look like another. “She likes chicken nuggets, but not fish, so I make fish sticks that look like chicken nuggets.” With a little planning and by setting a good example, parents can start their children on the road to good nutrition and eating habits for life. Heather Bailey is a Charlotte editor and writer and mom to a 6-year-old adventurous eater/daughter.
Great First Foods For BaBy
Vegetables and fruits make perfect first foods of your baby. These five picks are all easy to digest and pose little risk of allergic reaction.
1. Avocados - Just like bananas, avocados don’t need to be cooked; simply mash them up. Filled with protein and Omega 3 fatty acids, they are one of the most nutritionally dense fruits.
2. Sweet potatoes Another highly nutritious choice, sweet potatoes are high in vitamin A, potassium and fiber and are low on the glycemic index despite their sweet taste. Baking them retains the most nutrients.
3. Carrots - These sweet roots are easier to digest than green vegetables such as beans. They are full of beta-carotene as well as vitamins and minerals. The best thing about carrots is that they are easy to find year round.
4. Squashes - These complex carbohydrate foods such as acorn or butternut squash are packed with vitamin A, folate and calcium. Roast the squash for the most nutrients and flavor.
5. Pears - As the least acidic fruit, pears are very easy on baby’s digestion. In fact, citrus fruits should not be introduced until your baby is 9-12 months old. Pears are full of vitamins C and K and fiber.
