Shortly after receiving a Master of Science in Public Health from UNCC, she moved to New York to pursue her love of fashion. There, while attending Parsons School of Design, she realized that fashion, art, and expression oftentimes require not an explanation as professors frequently demanded but, instead, an open mind to fully appreciate it. Professionally “untrained,” she returned home to do what she does best with her innate ‘know-how’—create beauty. Whether with garments or charcoal, words or acrylic, she continuously makes bold statements. Currently, she is working on a product that innovative America will consider a must-have. Stay tuned. 6. He finds the relationship between art and fashion fascinating and believes that fashion, it s highest form, is nothing more than the puruit of beauty. In my opinion, fashion, like art, should make you pause, if only for a moment. It should inspire you to think, to feel and to ultimately see the world differently.

A new modern twist on the Grecian inspired look is red hot for summer. This trend can be seen this season in everything from footwear and accessories to dresses, tunic, and even summer swimwear. Don’t be afraid to venture out with this trend. In years past this style was devoted to pastels and neutrals, but this season it’s bringing bright, bold hues. F asymmetrical gowns to the shorter version of the modern toga the draping style of the Grecian is in.

for those who want to conceal problem areas. If the dress is plain, add some of this season’s statement jewelry necklace will snazz it up a bit. Dress up a shorter toga-style dress with strappy heels for a night out. If you choose longer version, gladiator sandals give an ultra stylish chic look. The great thing about the Greek-inspired look is you can easily make it your own. This look can be worn from casual to cocktail depending on the accessories you choose. The Grecian style is exceptionally feminine, pure, airy, and delicate perfect for the trendy goddess.

The Theory by Charlie Pratt

Yep, we’ve all seen ‘em. Sucked tightly against the bones of teenagers’ legs like

shrink-wrapped telephone poles, skinny jeans have found new life in American culture. Even the term “skinny jeans” has developed its own cult definition, referring less to the type of apparel and more to the individual who wears the lean jean.

The Skinny The denim jean came onto the scene in the fifties and sixties, worn slim and tight, considered standard by the original rock ‘n rollers, as well as Hollywood’s female elite. This durable fabric, the hero of the American farmer for so many years, made its way onto concert stages, advertisements, and into America’s closets. This carried into the seventies, where jean designers decided to add a twist, settling their gaze on the lower portions of the leg, choosing to bell the bottoms and flare the legs. The eighties reversed the work the seventies had begun, throwing jean design in reverse and opting instead to taper the leg, a style which carried into the nineties, whereupon the jean was ambushed by the gods of grunge rock and gangster rap, giving air to a snug design with the glorification of the boot-cut and wide-leg jeans. Skinny jeans went into a hibernation state, not considered counterculture enough for the teeming hordes of Nirvana fans and members of Dr. Dre’s growing army. Glam had ceased for the time being, and for a while it seemed that fashion had decided to let its patrons legs have a few moments to breathe.

Individualism Today there is, more than ever, a general desire to be original. With the onslaught of information from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace, the fashion-forward are seeing more than ever the common threads that run throughout society, from life events, to language, and yes, to fashion. What is en vogue is to be unique, to have something no one else has. This, of course, begins to beg a paradox that can’t be ignored: With so many searching after individualist aims, the pool of originality becomes quite cluttered, saturated with fashionistas who just want to wear something that nobody else has on.

Hey Hey, Look at Me With the fashion world focusing so heavily upon European trends, America’s fashion-conscious citizens are adopting more of what would once-be-called scandalous preference. The skinny jean, it cannot be argued, leaves little to the physical imagination. Observers can ascertain precisely what sort of body frame surges beneath the denim death grip. But the skinny jean isn’t worn only by the svelte. Recent surges in skinny-jeaning among the curvaceous, made accessible by Ms. Kardashian and her atomic bottom, are causing many to rethink just who it is that can wear the lean jean. 15

Fashion Never Sleeps With the checkered life habits of celebrities like Pete Doherty, Amy Winehouse, and Lindsay Lohan coloring the rebel spirit of the skinny jean, celebrities are beginning to make their own statements about the death grip of web 2.0 fashion, donning jeans that look like airless balloons, making irony of the fact that they - Katie Holmes, Jennifer Aniston, and Jessica Alba, and others on Team Thin that could, quite easily, sport the skinny jean - are beginning to sport a bit of the bag, cinching truly functional belts around willowy waists and turning the heads of the paparazzi as they drag their bags about town. This isn’t a trend that will catch on, but it’s a necessary function of an ever-evolving jean history that, based on history’s lesson, should continue to surprise us for many decades to come.

Where to go From Here? Hard to say. The skinny jean has proven itself over the course of history to be a perennial go-to for the children of rock ‘n roll, being present in the beginning and coming back again for another term. One would have to give the skinny jean the nod over the bell-bottom in terms of staying power, and while the super-wide-leg was memorable, it’s not exactly plausible. Rap is no longer saggy, baggy jeans only, as stars like Puff Daddy, Pharrell, and Kanye West show the world that tailored fabrics and custom clothing is the next big push. The Killers, Kings of Leon, and Coldplay are pulling from many styles, including western, military, and maritime, to stay ahead of the curve and set new trends. As artists expand their business acumen and branch into new roles, I can’t help but wonder What would have happened if Elvis had decided to market a line of skinny jeans?

Isaac Mizrahi Interview by Bridgette E. Wright

stylisto recently became Creative Director at Liz Claiborne and now co-host of The Fashion Show on Bravo. B. Wright: Tell me a little about what you’ve done in your new position as Creative Director at Liz Claiborne. Isaac Mizrahi: This was a good job for me because we took our time developing the product. It took two years to get to this point, to this launch, and there is so much that we did with the brand. We totally rethought it. This is the best job because I love Liz Claiborne. Growing up I absolutely idolized her and she made up, for me, American clothes – she made it up, it was her invention. This job for me was such a great thing and suddenly everyone was like, ‘oh my god how are you going to do this? It’s such a dowdy brand; it’s such a granny brand.’ I was like, what are you taking about, step aside! Frankly [Liz Claiborne] has the best factories, the best production the best shipping the best everything. I just step in and say this is what should be done and that’s exactly what I’ve done. And they’ve listened and I think it looks so good. And it’s also selling right now which is very exciting. BW: I love the color selection of the clothing. It’s beautiful! IM: It was my aim, my goal to sort of freshen it and make it this vital American brand that it once was, even better. Because here I am, my ego is on the line (laughs).

BW: Tell me a little about what we see in the collection. IM: I have to say, what I hope you see is my perception of a smart woman - a smart ageless woman. That’s who I’m trying to speak to. This woman who is in her prime, whether she is 25 or 45 or 65. [People ask] ’who is your woman?’ [She is] the smart ageless woman. When I say that it sounds very broad but it’s not because the word ‘smart’ narrows it down, the word ‘ageless’ narrows it down and the word ‘woman’ narrows it down. I remember when I was in my 20s designing clothes for women in their prime, I wasn’t designing teen, pop clothes. I’ve always been that designer. And now that I’m in my early 30s (chuckles) I consider that I am for the rest of my life. Just because I’m 60 doesn’t mean that I have to be 60 ; I’m not 60 but you see what I mean. Perpetually 35.

BW: What do you think about the first lady, Michelle Obama, photographed wearing Liz. She’s mylike idol.toI love She represents the IM:“I would haveit.a studio in biggest “seeThat change” history. She SoHo. day,inI our can country’s die already It’s lived is a because real loverI’ve of clothes. notmy just a person,

expressing all the good things of yourself.

like a card board cut out, like so many first ladies with big hair and a red suit, she really loves clothes and it’s personal for her. As opposed to just working with a stylist, I know she does, she’s busy, but I know the woman is involved. I also love the fact that she is the perfect example of this perpetual 35 year old. She still wears sleeveless because she has gorgeous arms. She still wears skirts above the knees because she has good legs. Just because she’s not exactly 30 she doesn’t dress like that, she’s dressed appropriately. BW: Those following me on Twitter want to me to ask you ‘What’s hot this summer?’ IM: Shorts, wedge sandal, color accessories, a big color handbag, yellow [and] a crop jacket.

BW: Another question from Twitter…..I know that Boston Legal was your favorite TV show so what are watching now? IM: The real housewives of NY. Bridgette, you have to watch that show. It’s the best show ever. You’re going to love it. The other thing I watch is In Treatment. I have to go home when [the show is] broadcast because I’m the broadcast kind of guy. BW: What’s your stylish accessory that you can’t live without? IM: (Pointing to his Liz Claiborne bag) The more beat up it gets the more I adore it. For me it’s the replacement tote bag for everything in your closet. This is the best bag. People stop me on the street and ask, ‘where did you get that’ and I’m like ‘Belk’. BW: What does STYLE mean to you? IM: STYLE means a lot of things. It means the courage to go with what you have and somehow make it surprising and delightful. That you’re born with certain attributes, trying to play those up while denying the bad things. STYLE means exhibiting the best part of you, of who you really are,

BW: Is there anything that you have not accomplished yet that you want to one day? IM: I’d like to help people more. I think that fashion design helps people, but I would like to help more. I’m involved in a few pet causes. I grew up with ASPCA for instance. I want to make an actual philanthropic change in th world. When I am able to I will if God smiles down on me and makes me that lucky I will. BW: Do you have pets? IM: I have a dog and my boyfriend has a dog. My dog Harry who is 9, he is an Aires, he is a border collie mix and Arnold’s dog is a beagle mix and he’s 2.

BW: I’m going on a cruise in a few weeks. What should I wear? IM: Sarong, no. No more sarongs. I know it’s the vacation look but I think you should wear a big oversized boyfriend-ish blazer, a collar with the sleeves rolled up, a little bathing suit, and then like shorts with …make it like a suit with little tiny shorts. And the that’s your on board look, you need heels, the jacket should be plaid. There you go. We’ll call it, “Bridgette on Board.”

(Isaac has this game called “Sketches and Answers” that he plays on his online TV show. I asked him if he were willing to play with me and he agreed. The sketch is to the left)

Bridal A ccessories

STYLE weddings

by Sarah Robinson

t used to be that a bride would center her entire wedding look on that one perfect dress. But many brides today are choosing to make a statement in other ways. Drawing from past decades and adding a modern twist, bridal hair accessories have become a popular way for brides to add their own style as they walk down the aisle.

Gone are the days of just deciding whether to wear a fingertip or cathedral veil, these trends will make any bride a showstopper. And with the right dress and hairstyle, a bride can pull together a look that is all her own.

2

Feathers

3

Feathers are being seen on a variety of headpieces this wedding season. A take on the elaborate headdress worn by Carrie Bradshaw for her big day, these pieces are more subdued but just as eye- catching. Depending on how you wear it, feathers can be flirty and fun or classic and chic. For a fresh take on a vintage look, tuck hair to one side and fasten with a stylish feather flower pin. This look is really great on shorter hairstyles, especially when paired with 20s-inspired pin curls.

Birdcage Veils

4

In recent years, many brides have chosen to go veil-less on their wedding day. But a new alternative is the birdcage veil. This veil was traditionally worn attache d to a hat, but modern brides are taking this trend and making it their own by attaching the veil to a pin or comb or even personalizing it 1950s and paired with a vintage tea-length dress or a simple mermaid style gown, it can truly pull together a memorable look.

HeadbandRibbons 7

21

Headbands take on a sophisticated air by combining luxurious satin ribbon with decorative beading. Brides can go simple, a ribbon accented with crystals or extravagant, an encrusted jeweled ribbon that hangs down the back. Some brides are even wearing their headbands in the flapper style, a look that is bold and very “in, especially when matched with a short, 1920s-inspired dress.

5

Combs

6

Combs are an easy way to add sparkle and style to your hair. For a current look, go for ones that add an old Hollywood feel to your ensemble. Crystals, genuine farmed pearls, and rhinestones decorate many bridal combs, making them an ornate way to embellish an updo. One thing that is becoming trendy is to turn an antique brooch into a comb so you can remove the brooch after the wedding and continue to wear it for special occasions.

“I Do” Weddings Jillian Cooper: Wedding Planner By Sarah Robinson

T

here are so many details to pull together when planning a wedding. From the color theme and flowers to the reception site and first dance, a bride needs to know what she wants and how to make decisions. For many brides, this is where a wedding planner steps in. She or he is there to work out the little details, leaving the calm and happy as her big day approaches. Wedding planning has become a big name business in recent years. Getting your foot in the door can be tough, but Jillian Cooper of Charlotte was not going to let that stop her. Jillian Cooper Cooper began her dream of wedding planning by pulling off her sister’s New York style wedding in Charlotte in 2005. During this time she was trying to get her start in wedding planning, but nobody was hiring. That is when she took things into her own hands. With a communications degree already behind her, Cooper pursued a Bridal Consulting certificate from Stratford Careers Institute and was determined to follow her dreams. In Sept. 2008 she opened her own event planning company called A Time Forever. Although Cooper is still fairly new to the wedding planning business, her company has coordinated many weddings and events, and she hopes to continue to grow and gain national recognition, maybe even one day appearing on television. Cooper credits her success so far to her hard work and the motivation she gets from seeing clients happy. For her it is all about the end product of making sure her bride and groom have a wedding day they will always remember. CSM:What is a typical workday like for you?

CSM:What does STYLE mean to you?

Jillian Cooper:Every day is different. I may be meeting with the bride and groom, vendors, or the family. This career is a changing career, and I trained myself for that. I always have something new and interesting come around.

JC:To me style is personality, looks, and ideas. It is being unique from the people around you and not being afraid to say or try something new. It is knowing some people might not like what you say, do or wear, but doing it anyway because you are confident and comfortable enough with yourself to not worry about what people think.

CSM:What is your favorite part of planning a wedding? JC:The best part is going to the wedding and coordinating the day. When all the details come together it makes the wedding complete. You get to see the family happy and enjoying the completed project. You can see the joy on the faces of the bride and groom because they didn’t have to stress to plan their big day. And after months of planning, they get to see the way the day turns out. CSM:What is the toughest part of the business? JC:Being a people pleaser within a budget. People always want to have more than they can afford, and as an event planner my job is to keep them within their budget and still help them have what they want. I have to try my best to get the bride what she wants but also make sure she can afford it. As an event planner, I can’t make decisions for them, but I can make suggestions. CSM:What should a bride look for in a wedding planner? JC:You want a creative wedding planner that will help make your dreams come true, not someone who will just make decisions for you. You need someone who will take your ideas and run with them, expanding on what you are looking for.

CSM:What is your STYLISH obsession that you cannot live without? JC:I always carry my Coach handbag. It has great memories and special meaning to me. It was my grandmother’s and I know she watches me carry it every day. It reminds of the great times I had with her, and knowing that I have it with me, she is always with me. CSM:What career advice do you have for individuals aspiring to be wedding planners? JC:If you want to be a wedding planner, go for it. Start as an intern somewhere. If you want to start your own business, don’t worry about the money first. Pay attention to the experience. Starting out planning events for friends and family is the best way because they will give you true advice and word-of-mouth advertising. Word of mouth advertising is the best advertising. Get your name out there! Treat all events as if you were doing them one at a time. Stay organized and personal with each client.

This was a themed cake that recreated their trip in Vegas. The cake had many of the famous venues that people visit and even the famous Vegas. The second favorite cake was an Indian cake she designed for a wedding. This cake was fun because she got the opportunity to learn more about the culture and do a different type of design. This cake consisted of peacock feathers and many colors.

reaking into the world of television can be an exhausting climb, especially for someone right out of college. But for Samantha Badger, everything seemed to fall right into place when she landed an associate producer position at Fox Charlotte after graduating. She doesn’t remember anything extraordinary about the process-- she saw the ad, applied for the position, got an interview, and came out with the job. No great connections, she says, just a normal thing. But as she begins her rise in the television business at the age of 22, you could probably say her life is anything but normal.

She begins the day researching the overnight news as well as any updates that may have come through since the 10 p.m. broadcast. One such door that swung open recently is the introduction of her new role as “Sam on Cam.” The idea was brought to her by the executive producer at Fox who was looking for someone to educate and introduce people to the benefits of the ever-increasing Twitter trend. “Twitter really is a great research tool and many people don’t know they can use it to boost business or even find a job. I think this role will give me a chance to reach out to a lot of different people in different ways.” As for being in the spotlight, she loves it, but says it was definitely nerve-wracking at first. “The first few times I was nervous because it was a much different experience than working behind-the-scenes. Power Girl Start Being Your Own Publicists By Tammy Gibson

“Public relations is the business of inducing the public to have understand-

ing for and goodwill toward a person, firm, or institution; also: the degree of understanding and goodwill achieved,” - Merriam-Webster

As Public Relations Manager for Charlotte STYLE Magazine, the majority of my day to day tasks are to ensure that the Charlotte community understands the purpose of our publication and has a positive perception of STYLE.

Now that summertime is upon us, you’ve probably notice more individuals out and about compared to the winter months. If you’re like many of our STYLISH readers, you’ve shed your winter and/or spring wardrobe in exchange for short shorts, flip flops, and tank tops.

I carry out many public relations (PR) efforts through various methods; managing nightlife events, setting up interviews, booking models, organizing community service efforts, media development, and more. It is a role that requires strong attention to detail, but it is a function that is very essential to the public opinion of the magazine.

If you’re like many of my girlfriends, you’ve shed your winter relationships and/or spring flings in exchange for a potentially new summer romance.

The practice of PR isn’t just something that is for celebrities and fortune 500 companies. PR should be applied to your everyday life and used as a vital tool to increase success in the areas of your finances, love life, friendships, career, family, and more.

Although I am off the “romantic market” this summer, I still know what it feels like to get all dolled up and ready to go out for a night on the town with my BFF in search of a handsome new counterpart. During my single time, I learned how PR coincides with going out with intentions of snagging that potentially new companion. As you venture off for your summer activities keep the following PR points in mind:

Dress to Impress; NOT to Attract the Wrong Type of Attention – You want to be seen as a woman who knows how to dress sexy without being overly exposed.

No More Than Three Girlfriends at a Time – Guys tend to view a large group of females as a DANGER ZONE, so it’s best if you go out with as few friends as possible. Do NOT go out alone; just don’t take the whole modeling troupe.

Know Your Limit – We have all been there when we’ve had one two many drinks but if you are constantly in this category, people tend to notice and this does not bring too much credit to your public image. We’ve all seen pictures of Lindsay Lohan passed out in the passenger seat, right? Don’t be that girl.

Mind Your Manners – No one likes a rude person, so be polite even if you may not be getting the same respect. Hold yourself to a higher standard and know when to walk away from a disrespectful situation with grace and dignity.

Be Confident – This is the sexiest quality that a woman can bring with her to a nightclub, bar, restaurant, sporting event, Broadway production, gallery, race or concert. If you don’t have confidence, the previously noted points won’t matter.

If you follow these guidelines, I can confirm that your positive image will be what attracts a guy, ensures that you have a successful summer, and keep your public reputation intact. Endlessly PR, Tammy

Kate Kincaid: Life Coach By Catey Contes

L

ife coaching is an emerging career that allows individuals to seek the professional guidance of a coach in order to meet goals and reach their full potential. Currently serving the Charlotte and Lake Norman areas, Coach Kate Kincaid is certified in life, wellness, student, and fitness coaching. Kincaid’s passion for helping others has been essential for her in building her own life coaching company, Peace by Piece CSM: What is Life Coaching? Kate Kincaid: Life Coaching is the process of guiding and challenging others to identify core life desires, uncovering authentic talents, and applying unique qualities in pursuit of one’s goals. Coaching is a positive, practical and supportive process to help you create passion, joy and balance in your life. It is an ongoing relationship that is action-oriented, goal-driven, proactive and measurable. Whereas psychotherapy helps people to overcome issues of the past, coaching actually focuses on the future and helps people go from where they currently are to were they want to be in their life.

Life and wellness is the whole overview of a person’s life. I guide my clients to find out what is holding them back. Everybody wants to do great things, but there is always that place where a person can get stuck and not know how to move forward. I help clients figure out what is causing them to be stuck, and together we create a plan to move forward in the right direction. I also create workout and meal plans for my clients.

CSM:What is the toughest part of your business? KK:The best part of my business is working with clients and helping people. I think the hardest challenge is that there are so many networking groups and so many people who want to team up and do workshops, retreats, etc. It is hard to determine who will be the best fit for my business. If anything, that would be the hardest part, but that’s really a good problem to have.

CSM:How did you get involved in life coaching?

CSM:Who or what motivates you to succeed or inspires you?

KK:I have always known that I wanted to help people and I wanted my own business, but I didn’t know what in the world it was going to be. When I was in college, I worked 30 hours a week on top of going to school full time. I was constantly juggling many different tasks. Many of my friends were lucky and didn’t have to work. They just had school, but they were still having trouble juggling their tasks. They noticed that I was working and going to school successfully, so they started coming to me and asking me to help them with their schedules and finding jobs. I instantly loved doing it. It came to the point where their parents would say, “if you help my daughter study for this test and work out her schedule, I will pay you.” I came across a website about wellness coaching one day when I graduated college, and I instantly knew that was what I wanted to do. I started applying for the certifications and going through the courses, went to school, and here I am.

KK:What motivates me now is my business because I have the pleasure of helping someone everyday. There is nothing better than seeing or hearing a smile on a client’s face when our session is over. It is priceless.

CSM:Tell me about Peace by Piece. KK:[We have] clients ranging from 16 to 55 years old. With student coaching, including high school students, college students [and] adults, I work to help students prepare for the next level. I help high school students prepare for college and college students prepare for the real world. We work on procrastination, time management, organizational skills, interview preparation, cover letter writing, resume writing, networking skills, and how to deal with the overall real world.

CSM:What does STYLE mean to you? KK:Style represents who a person is. When you are representing a company or yourself for something that you believe in, style is very important. If you are underdressed or not put together well, one might assume that you aren’t as serious or involved as you should be. If you are well dressed and have good style, people will be drawn to you. CSM:What item do you carry everywhere, your STYLISH obsession that you can not live without? KK:A hair clip or elastic hair tie. Half way through the day my hair usually ends up on the top of my head, so I can’t leave the house without it! CSM:What career advice do you have for individuals who aspire to become a life coach? KK:If you want this career, and you believe in yourself, then you can do it. Focus on the positive every day and learn from your mistakes. Never, ever give up. Set a goal and do not stop until you are satisfied.

Summer Reads

by Sarah Robinson

T

here is nothing like relaxing by the pool or under an umbrella at the beach and enjoying a good book. Summertime is the perfect time to catch up on new books that have come out during the year or just reread some of your favorites. This year, many authors who have graced the best-sellers lists have come out with new adventures, making for a wonderful reading season. Don’t forget to pack these five must-reads as you head out on vacation!

1

2

First on the list is a favorite of many. Summer Sisters by Judy Blume was published several years ago, but still remains a wonderful read. Blume has always been able to capture moments in life through her writing in such a defining way, and this book is no different. A New York Times Bestseller, this story describes the friendship between two girls and the decisions they make that shape their families, their love lives, and their memories. Be ready to laugh and cry!

In recent months it seems like everywhere we look we hear news about the tumbling economy or the high jobless rate. That is why the last book on the list is about happiness. A Short Guide to a Happy Life by Anna Quindlen is a quick read, only 64 pages, but is full of ways to learn to appreciate the simple things around you. Compiled from a collection of her essays, Quindlen talks about how life can teach us lessons using ordinary objects - falling snow, innocent children, beautiful spring flowers. Embrace this book and you are sure to feel lighter after reading it!

3

Best-selling author Lauren Weisberger, who introduced her readers to an unforgettable magazine editor and behind-thescenes looks of VIP rooms in New York City, came out with her newest novel, Chasing Harry Winston, last May. Taking readers through a year in the life of Emmy, Leigh, and Adriana, three best friends since college, Weisberger explores the ups and downs of trying to change your life with a sudden resolution. This book is a great chick-lit read that makes you long for late night chats with your best girlfriends, cocktail parties, and Mr. Right.

True Colors by Kristin Hannah is next. A little less carefree and fun than the other books on the list, this story is about three sisters who are turned against each other by their father after their mother’s death. Hannah is the author of 17 other novels, most recently Firefly Lane, and is known for her compelling storytelling and welldeveloped characters. Learn to love your family all over again after reading this novel.

4

5 Another famous chick-lit writer who burst onto the seen with her books In Her Shoes and Good in Bed, Jennifer Weiner will debut her newest book July 14. Best Friends Forever will also follow female friendship and what makes it tick. Judging from her past successes with her heroines, this book is sure to be a hit!
