CONCERT FINALE
May 20 Knight Theater
May 20 Knight Theater
I’m so pleased to welcome you to the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras’ final concert of the season. As we bring this remarkable season to a close, we reflect upon the incredible growth and achievements of our talented young musicians.
The inspiring group of musicians you’ll hear today received guidance from our highly skilled conducting staff, including Resident Conductor Christopher James Lees, Katie Ebert, and Eric Thompson III; and from CSO musicians, who served as coaches. Guest artists performing with the Symphony, like this weekend’s soloist Alexi Kenney, offered master classes, giving students insights into the life of a professional musician and sharing new techniques to help students fine-tune their craft. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.
I would like to express gratitude to the parents, families, and generous donors who have made all of this possible. Your support is vital to nurturing the future of music in our community.
Thank you for joining us today to witness the incredible talents of these young musicians and for your continued support.
David Fisk President & CEODid you know that the Charlotte Symphony is much more than what you see on the Belk and Knight Theater stages? Beyond the Classical, Pops, Family, and Movie Series in the theaters, we work to uplift, entertain, and educate our community through inclusive education programs and community performances.
• The CSO has three programs for young musicians: the Youth Orchestra, the Youth Philharmonic, and the Youth Ensemble. CSO musicians participate in coaching throughout the year, and even perform with the young musicians!
• Reaching approximately 15,000 students each season, we also have extensive school programs, including Project Harmony, “Music and the Holocaust,” and “One Musical Family” Education Concerts.
• We perform throughout the region, from community parks and schools to breweries, senior care centers, and places of worship all season long.
The CSO is…FOR EVERYONE .

A recipient of a Career Assistance Grant from the Solti Foundation US, Mr. Lees was also chosen for showcase on the Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation National Conductor Preview, hosted by the League of American Orchestras and Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
A dedicated advocate for music of our time, Mr. Lees has premiered more than one hundred fifty new works by a diverse range of composers, and collaborated closely with Pulitzer Prize winners John Adams, William Bolcom, John Corigliano, Jennifer Higdon, Joseph Schwantner, Steven Stucky, Caroline Shaw, Roger Reynolds, and Julia Wolfe.

When not performing, Mr. Lees can be found building Lego sets with his seven year old son, reading the stack of books on his nightstand, or perpetually training for a marathon.

The Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra experience provides extraordinary music education in pursuit of musical excellence. The program aims to inspire in our students a strong sense of character, discipline, commitment, and community.
The ensembles are inclusive, diverse, and accessible to all students, regardless of financial resources. High-quality ensemble training is led by Charlotte Symphony Resident Conductor Christopher James Lees, Youth Philharmonic Co-Conductor Katie Ebert, CSYE Conductor & CSYP CoConductor Eric Thompson III, and professional Charlotte Symphony musicians, who provide a nurturing environment through which young musicians create lasting bonds in music and friendship.
We offer regular performance opportunities throughout the city, including the Belk and Knight theaters, plus access to the Charlotte Symphony’s renowned Conductor Laureate & Music Adviser, Christopher Warren-Green, and international visiting artists, such as Joshua Bell.
