Edward Morrison Brown Collection Charlotte, North Carolina After a long and successful career, Edward Morrison Brown has firmly established his place in the Charlotte design community. Having graduated from Davidson College in 1959, Mr. Brown pursued graduate studies at the Richmond Professional Institute (now part of Virginia Commonwealth University) and independent research endeavors throughout Europe. Mr. Brown began his professional career as part of Wade Manufacturing Corporation in Charlotte, in time becoming Vice President of Wade Interior Design. He also served as president and chairman of the board of the National Society of Interior Designers. In 1978, Mr. Brown opened his own firm in Charlotte, Brown’s Interiors. With the help of his wife, Constance, the firm oversaw the design plans of many private Charlotte homes as well as banks, hotels, and country clubs throughout the Carolinas. Mr. Brown’s restoration of White Homestead in Fort Mill, South Carolina, demonstrates his passion for historic preservation. His institutional design and preservation efforts have been widely recognized with numerous honors and awards, among them his 1998 designation as Atlantic Decorative Arts Center’s Southeast Designer of the Year. Many buildings and residences, particularly in Charlotte, have been stamped with the enduring mark of Edward Morrison Brown’s timeless aesthetic.

Rutledge Family Provenance
The Rutledge family of Charleston has a long and significant place in South Carolina state history. An archive of documents once belonging to some of the family’s earliest political, military, and landowning ancestors has descended through the family to a present heir. Rutledge ancestors represented in this collection include: John Rutledge (1739-1800) was a prominent Charleston lawyer, landowner, and political leader. He was a member of the First Continental Congress along with his brother, Edward Rutledge (1749-1800), the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. John Rutledge went on to be elected Governor of South Carolina and was chosen as the second Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court under George Washington. John Rutledge II (1766-1819) was an active politician and landowner in Charleston like his father. John Rutledge II was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, founder of the Charleston Courier, and owner of Poplar Grove, a large rice plantation on the Savannah River. He had an active military career, serving as Lieutenant Colonel of the 28th Regiment from 1806-1816 and Brigadier General of the 7th Brigade, 1816-1819. He was married to Sarah Motte Smith (1777-1852), the daughter of Reverend Robert Smith, who was the president of the College of Charleston, 1790-1797, and the first American Episcopal bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina. Hugh Rose Rutledge (1823-1915) was the grandson of John Rutledge II. He had active medical and military careers after graduating from the Medical College of the State of South Carolina in Charleston. He volunteered as a surgeon with the United States Army and served with the 2nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, during the Mexican-American War from 1847-1848. While Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc., their employees and representatives, make every effort to accurately describe all lots offered for sale, it is incumbent upon the bidder to satisfy themselves in all areas of authenticity, originality, condition and imperfections. Bidders should also acknowledge that condition reports are often subjective and any item offered at auction may be subject to normal wear consistent with age that may not be specified in a condition report. If a bidder is uncertain about any of these issues, we would recommend that they not bid on lots in question. Storage fees, handling charges, and seller’s commission rate of 20% will be deducted from the proceeds. Your bid is a legally binding contract. If you are the successful bidder, you have entered into a contract to purchase the property which you bid from the seller. You should contact Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc. to resolve any questions prior to placing any bids. The use of a live internet bidding service will subject your bid to an additional buyer’s premium. Please be aware of this and be sure to read all the terms published by the service providing online bidding. The Conditions of Sale as written in this printed catalog will take precedence over any other conditions, whether printed or posted on internet websites. Conditions of Sale may be amended by posted notices in the salesroom or by announcement from the auctioneer. Bid increments: Bidding generally opens at half the low estimate and generally advances as indicated on bid sheet. All bids submitted out of increment will be rounded to the nearest increment.

Guide for Prospective Buyers Bidding and buying at auction is an exciting and fast-paced process. If you have never participated in a live sale before, we encourage you to consult with one of our staff members to discuss how the process works. Terms & Conditions of Sale: Charlton Hall encourages prospective buyers to read the Conditions of Sale printed in the back of this catalogue for more complete information. Registration: All prospective bidders must have an active Charlton Hall account in good standing, complete a Registration Form and provide government-issued photo ID for each sale. First-Time Registration: If you have never registered to bid at Charlton Hall, you must complete our Account Setup Form, present a government-issued photo ID and be approved. At the discretion of Charlton Hall, prospective bidders may be required to provide a deposit against bids. Preview Exhibition: Charlton Hall offers auction previews leading up to every sale. Galleries are open to the public for preview during printed dates and by appointment. Condition Reports: Charlton Hall and its staff will be pleased to issue Condition Reports for any lot offered. Please note that our staff and specialists are not professional conservators, and that statements of condition are only our opinion. Please remember all lots are sold “AS IS”, and as stated in the Terms & Conditions governing each sale. We strongly encourage bidders or their agents to examine property first-hand prior to bidding. Bidding: We are pleased to offer various bidding platforms at Charlton Hall. You may wish to attend and bid in person, or make prior arrangements to bid by Phone, Absentee, or view the sale live via Live Internet bidding. Please keep in mind the highest bidder acknowledged by our auctioneer will be the purchaser of the item. Although our auctioneer is highly skilled and competent, due to technology and human error, there is always the possibility a bid may be seen or entered too late, and the bidder must acknowledge that once the auctioneer closes bidding, the sale is final. Please see Terms & Conditions of Sale for bid increments, and additional information governing each sale. Payment: In addition to the hammer price, the winning bidder agrees to pay Charlton Hall a buyer’s premium, as well as any applicable taxes. All payments are due immediately following the auction. Payment may be made with cash, money order, cashier’s check, bank wire transfer or a pre-approved US bank-drawn check. Charlton Hall does NOT accept credit cards as payment. Pickup & Shipping: We request all purchased lots be removed from the premises within 5 business days. Charlton Hall and its staff will provide a list of recommended shippers and packers whom our worldwide clients have successfully used.
