Entertainment Launches The Algorithm 60 min episodes New title Does a computer know your family better than you do? Nowadays it seems that computer programmes are always predicting your next move or purchase but can a mere computer possibly know your family better than you do? The Algorithm is the ultimate game show when it comes to man versus machine. Playing for big money, teams of family members/close friends try to predict the preferences of a loved one who is in isolation, answering the questions for themselves. Using their combined knowledge, the team as well as The Algorithm answer a series of increasingly difficult questions, such as who does Dad trust the least; lawyers, plumbers or mechanics? But if our computer, The Algorithm knows Dad better then the family are out of the game! Who will triumph - man or machine?

PRODUCER PROFILE

Andrew Byrne, Executive Producer, TV3 Ireland One of the most unique things about The Algorithm is that it is the first format to test contestants against a specially created algorithm – the computer has become a significant ‘player’ in a game show, and contestants are not relying on their general knowledge, but attempting to prove that their knowledge of the main player will triumph over computer calculations. One of the biggest challenges we faced was building The Algorithm. We began by asking a cross-section of people from across the country a series of questions – from their age and social grading, to whether they are a sports lover,

movie buff, or even how introverted / extroverted they see themselves as. The Algorithm computer was then pre-loaded with the answers to these questions which make up the baseline of The Algorithm. The main player was also asked the same questions, and the computer can then search out an equivalent from the national survey to try and predict how they will answer game questions from there on in. In our experience, we know that the algorithm was accurate 48% of the time, which provided us with a great game for the studio. Naturally our fears were that the computer might either get it right or wrong all the time, however,

these were allayed during studio time.

Originally produced by 3 Studios International and Soshefeigh for TV3, Ireland

Once filming began, we discovered just how much fun this format would be for viewers at home. We found that during recording the gallery team would start discussing their own answers to each question, which was wonderful to see and, had to be stopped on occasions as we were getting distracted! It was also really interesting to watch the dynamics unfold within the studio teams – to view the cracks appearing or indeed the solidarity building – and to sometimes see a team who professed to know their player with such a competitive nature only to crash and burn at question one!

Bad Robots 30 min episodes New title When machines misbehave

Entertainment

Humans have relied on technology for years. From cash machines to phone chargers, we are utterly reliant on our electronic companions, but what happens when they’ve had enough of being taken for granted? In this brand new hilarious hidden camera show, technology is out to humiliate, aggravate and exasperate the unsuspecting public; from photo booths that mangle up your face for your passport photo, to a library search machine that announces you are searching for “PICTURES OF HORSES IN THONGS”. It’s not the robot uprising we expected, but what could be worse than getting spraytanned bright orange hours before a big date? Keep one eye open for Bad Robots. Originally produced by Objective Productions for E4, UK

PROFILE

Nathan Eastwood, Executive Producer, Objective Productions I was looking for presents for my children while on a recent trip to China when I stumbled upon a market stall selling old wind-up mechanical toys. I noticed they all looked a little sinister and in particular one ‘space robot’ looked outright evil. While considering whether it’d give my daughters nightmares, the concept for Bad Robots came to me. What would happen if all the machines in the world were evil, or at the very least a bit cheeky? For the next couple of days every time I interacted with a machine – buying tickets, heating food, getting photo ID - I asked myself the question ‘what could this machine do to annoy me’. The answer was,

a lot. I’d stumbled across a gold mine of hidden camera prank ideas with a clear narrative holding them all together. A cast of malevolent machines pulling pranks on un-suspecting members of the public. Bad Robots was picked up by E4 and we began filming in June 2014. The first problem we had to overcome was how to hide a camera in our machines small enough to remain hidden from the public but of such quality to meet the exacting HD requirements of the channel. The problem was solved by a new camera to the market, the Toshiba IK-HD5H. It’s tiny but the picture quality is amazing – other cameras such as GoPros also provide

great footage. The next issue we had to overcome was how to inject ‘character’ into our machine performers. We used a psychological phenomenon called “pareidolia” where the design features of a machine give the appearance of a human face. This effect brings the machines to life and you get a real sense that they’re personally tormenting the poor people who happen across them. The results have been hilarious. I think in part because it’s a very simple strong idea and also because we now trust machines implicitly. When the machines ‘go bad’ and this trust disappears the results are very funny indeed.

PROFILE

Mandy Wolf, Mystery Millionaire participant 34 year heiress living in Beverly Hills California, heir to the Nestle/Carnation Fortune The hardest part of filming my episode of Mystery Millionaire was remembering my cover story- I nearly blew it a number of times! I absolutely adore animals and my beloved Chihuahua Mishue came along with me on my undercover journey. So you would have thought that posing as a dog walker and doggy day care worker would have been a breeze- yet every time my dates asked me what I did for a living, my mind went blank! After a disastrous first date, I met two really great guys. It was a hard decision choosing between them but I went with Kendal who really made me laugh. Then I nearly blew it again! When Kendal came to visit me at my ‘fake’

apartment, I just didn’t know where anything was and I was opening and shutting the kitchen cabinets in a panic, madly searching for some champagne flutes. I think Kendal smelled a fish. When I finally revealed to Kendal that I was really a millionaire, he was completely unfazed. He genuinely seemed to like me, for me- not for my life style. Sadly after a few fun dates the relationship fizzled out and I am still single. But I loved taking part in the series and it’s really been a life changer, it made me realise that I can find someone who will love me for who I am and not what I’ve got. Not only that, I’m now in the process of setting up my own business…a doggy day care centre!

In this revealing dating format, one beautiful woman is presented with a line-up of semi-naked men to select a date. However – although she can see them - “looks” are the one thing she won’t be able to base any decisions on. Instead, she discovers a whole range of personal information about all her suitors without knowing which information belongs to which guy; from seeing inside their cars and bedrooms, to hearing from their Mums and bosses – each snippet of information might make her excited or despair. But it’s only when she lets a potential date go at the end of each round that she discovers which information is about him. When she finally makes her last choice, will she have correctly matched the info she likes with the looks she lusts after to find her dream date?

This romantic docu-reality-series follows the attempts of some incredibly wealthy but lonely bachelors and bachelorettes to meet someone who will love them for who they are and not their bank accounts! In a bid to find true love they go ‘undercover’ as average singles, swapping their 5 star life styles for a more modest existence. Now life and love is all on a budget. Each episode focuses on one millionaire who struggles to maintain their cover as they go on 3 blind dates. They then pick one of the suitors to get to know better and what follows is a whirlwind of one-on-one dates and secret challenges as the millionaire tries to determine if real love is blooming. But how will the women react when they realise that they have been deceived and that actually, their pauper is really a prince?

Birgitte Koefoed, STV Executive Producer, Tell Me Why I’m Single Denmark After a successful launch in Denmark where Tell Me Why I’m Single won its timeslot, we received some more happy news – the “life swap” experiment really works! In episode one, singletons Jakob and Carina swapped lives in an attempt to discover why they were finding it hard to find true love – Jakob had not had a serious relationship for over eight years. At the end of the show, the pair met to exchange advice based on what they’d found, and within a month of filming both participants had found partners - in Jakob’s case a

long-life partner! Jakob is now happily married to his new love Julia, and they are even expecting their first child in January 2015. A real life love story as a result of the help from Tell Me Why I’m Single. Neil Crombie, Executive Producer from the Tell Me Why I’m Single originating production company Swan Films commented: “We couldn’t be more delighted with the way the show has launched in Denmark. They’ve shown what an adaptable,

international and feel-good format Tell Me Why I’m Single is, making some shrewd casting decisions, and really thinking about the demographic the show could deliver for them. What we couldn’t have predicted is the positive impact it is clearly having on some of the contributors’ lives - the fact that one of them is about to have the world’s firstever Swan Films baby is the icing on the cake. Tillykke (congratulations), as they say in Denmark, to Birgitte and her team!”

How secure is your home? Revealing fascinating insights into the workings of the criminal mind, this eye opening format sees two ex-criminals coming together for one more job – but this time they are on the right side of the law. In shocking television, the expert thieves commit a real burglary on the homes of unsuspecting victims in a mission to highlight security weaknesses, sending a chilling wakeup call to the home owners as they later watch the break in on CCTV. The ex-cons then help the owners with a ‘crime make-over’ – a security audit of their homes to burglarproof them from future break ins. Weeks after the experiment, a final unannounced surprise break-in attempt from the two ex-cons test whether the security upgrade has done the trick, but have the home owners remembered to lock up? Feedback and payments are not shared until the end of the episode, meaning everyone is anxious to discover who will be championed and who will be criticised.

Creating iconic hairstyles for the world’s most famous faces represents the pinnacle of the hairdressing profession. It’s the domain of an elite group whose daily fees are more than a regular stylist earns in a year. Families at the Crossroads 45 or 60 min episodes, over 900 scripts available Produced in: 12 territories including Germany, Russia, Poland and Ukraine

Nothing is ever simply black or white

Is it the end or a new beginning?

Cases of Doubt is a modern ‘who-done-it’ format. An unsuspecting family, husband or wife is confronted with the possibility that a family member might have committed a crime. At the heart of each episode is the question, “Can this really be true”? Carefully scripted stories establish the case, and the dramatic narrative with its twists and turns keeps viewers guessing until the end whether the accusation is true or false. These stories are taken from true every-day events – such as those found in newspapers - and are recreated in a dramatized form that emphasises the emotional aspect of the incident and highlights the heroes and happy endings.

Each episode of Families at the Crossroads focuses on a gripping story of selfdiscovery, told through the eyes of a female hero. In the style of a documentary, the format relays what happens when the closest, most important and most emotional bonds in our lives are suddenly torn apart. Abuse, betrayal, secrets and illness how does the hero deal with the life changing threats that come into a family or relationship? True, everyday events are recreated in a dramatized form, and the specialised style of production delivers heightened emotions and dramatic turning points so we are able to see the most private thoughts of the protagonists.

Constructed Reality in Profile PROFILE Felix Wesseler, Director Business Development & Communications, Filmpool Entertainment Constructed reality is an approach, just as much as genre hybrid. We used this approach on court and crime topics, discussion and docu-series, and of course on Soap and Transmedia with Day & Night - and we have proven that by using our approach, TV still can reach a very young audience. Now we want to attract a wider audience to the soap-genre. Therefore, for the next launch we are mixing more fiction-elements into our approach. The outcome will be a very authentic Fashion Soap, “a hybrid of a hybrid”, or as we see it, the evolution of the soap-genre. It will be called Berlin Models – and we look forward to showing you more…

Drama Launches The Brokenwood Mysteries 4 x 120 min episodes produced New title Just a quiet little murder ridden town On the face of it, Brokenwood is another quiet, country town like any other; the kind you might find just a few hours’ drive from any city. The people are nice and there’s a strong sense of community and provinciality. It has a golf club, a mother’s club and regular wine shows, everything you would expect… including buried secrets, treacherous lies and murder. Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd and partner DC Kristin Simms watch over the town, investigating the mystifying, inventive and macabre crimes that befall it. Look beneath the peaceful veneer, and you’ll see that murder is curiously at home in The Brokenwood Mysteries. Originally produced by South Pacific Pictures for Prime, New Zealand

The Missing 8 x 60 min episodes produced New title Love, loss and truth

Drama

When five year-old Oliver is snatched from his family while on holiday in France, it sets off a manhunt that will last for years and years to come. A poignant narrative puzzle with twists and turns at every stage, The Missing follows Tony, the father who will do whatever it takes to find his missing child. Tony’s exhaustive search fractures his marriage to Emily and threatens to destroy his life. Julien, the French police detective who launched the initial search for the child, also cannot shake the small belief that he may still be alive. This gripping relationship thriller is told over two time frames, simultaneously, in two countries. Exploring the emotional cost of obsession, hope and finding when to let go, this thrilling drama shows the impact of a child’s abduction. Originally produced by New Pictures and Company Pictures for BBC 1, UK and Starz, USA in association with Two Brothers Pictures in association with Playground Entertainment. Co-Produced with BNP Parabas Fortis Film Fund and Czar TV Productions. Filmed with the support of The Belgium Federal Government’s Tax Shelter scheme. Co-Produced by EEN. The Almighty Johnsons 36 x 60 min episodes produced

Blue Rose 13 x 60 min episodes produced

It’s not easy growing up to be Gods

Sworn to fight for justice

The Johnsons are four ordinary Kiwi brothers who have inherited the powers of the Norse gods. But the Norse Gods lived a long time ago, and over many generations, their powers have become diluted. So the Johnsons aren’t like those flashy cartoon superheroes, they are typical Kiwi blokes who don’t much like to stand out from the crowd. This is New Zealand after all, and if Gods did walk among us, let’s face it… you probably wouldn’t even notice. These everyday Gods also have everyday struggles – striving to love stroppy women, overcoming sibling rivalry and fulfilling your God-like destiny, all while still finding the time to enjoy a few beers with your mates.

A contemporary, smart investigative drama in which the lowly back-room office staff join forces to fight for justice in a corrupt corporate world. This will involve the bending of office etiquette, somewhat… With some help from others on the apparently lowlier rungs in the office, our heroes fight high stakes crimes and shadowy corporate skulduggery to uncover the truth about Rose.

Contemporary reality drama that follows a class of pupils in their final year of school, as seen on the cameras that follow them. All situations in the series are based on the autobiographic experiences of the actors themselves. This way, Finals is a true to life report of the school year of 16 students, which could have been filmed at any school in Europe. Originally produced by IDTV for BNN, Netherlands

The cornerstone of C4 UK’s youth programming for over ten years, Hollyoaks succeeds as a sexy, sassy and younghearted show, while remaining committed to the social issues that affect its target market. For this reason, Hollyoaks is able to communicate directly with its viewers on the issues that matter to them. With storylines ranging from teen pregnancy to dating disasters, the series embraces the entire spectrum of teen issues balancing the dramatic with the lighthearted to create a show that is both informative and highly entertaining.

Nothing Trivial 39 x 60 min episodes produced

Pete Vs Life 11 x 30 min episodes produced

Does anyone know the answer?

Life is not a game

A series about broken hearts, second chances and starting over at 40 and beyond, Nothing Trivial is a warm and light-hearted romantic drama. Five very different, interesting and attractive characters with one thing in common – they are all unhappy or unlucky in love. It’s about winners and losers, set around the noble and useless sport of pub trivia. For a few hours every Tuesday night they can create some order in their chaotic lives by answering some strange or silly questions – and maybe even getting some right.

Hilarious comedy drama with Pete, a sports journalist whose every move – including those of his rather underachieving love life – is observed by two men in the guise of sports commentators. Everyman Pete is well-meaning and likeable, but life doesn’t inspire him with confidence. In fact, he doesn’t really get life. Why can’t life be more like sport? Sport is clear cut; it has rules and is easy to follow. Why can’t life be like that too? Originally produced by Objective Productions for Channel 4, UK

Originally produced by South Pacific Pictures for TV One, New Zealand

Originally Produced by South Pacific Pictures for TV3, NZ HIGHLIGHT: Multiple award winning series including six Quantas Awards in 2005, and five in 2007. The series has also rated extremely well on TV3: average share for series one 25.4%, series two 28.8% and series three 29.8%

Reggie Perrin 12 x 30 min episodes produced Another day. Another mid-life crisis… Reggie Perrin is a man feeling rather marooned in the modern world. This universally amusing drama sees Perrin not dealing too well with modern life and its rules: the daily commute, the battle for a seat surrounded by others ear-plugged in to all manners of electronics, days in the office dealing with the fascinating jargon and powerpoint presentations that comprise the world of male grooming products, disposable razors to be exact – they are all getting to him. He is becoming increasingly out of sync with family life – in fact he’s starting to have fantasies. Perrin is becoming distinctly odd… Originally produced by Objective Productions for BBC1, UK

Skins 61 x 60 min episodes produced Produced in: UK and USA The youth drama that has taken the genre by storm Edgy, hip and irreverent, the multi award-winning Skins melds hard-hitting emotional stories with wit, style and charm. An engaging group of teenagers with attitude and humour make up the broad range of characters in this cutting-edge youth drama. Each episode offers a self-contained story focused around one central character or small group of characters – but the episodes and drama are sequential, so the ‘serial’ feel gradually gains force until all the links between characters are revealed across the sweep of the series. It’s deadpan and confident, it’s cool without trying too hard. Originally produced by Company Pictures for E4, UK

HIGHLIGHT: Launched with a 22.3% share and every episode in the series won its timeslot, with an average ratings of over four million

HIGHLIGHT: The BAFTA-winning series has influenced modern youth culture, with so-called ‘Skins parties’ seemingly seeking to emulate the party featured in the trail for the first series. Skins has won nine awards across its series

Ultimate Force 12 x 60 min & 8 x 120 min episodes produced Muscular, unyielding action drama

PROFILE: Kelly Martin, Executive Producer, South Pacific Pictures Step Dave features a wide range of immediately recognisable characters and the kind of modern-day domestic dramas and inter-generational battles audiences from around the world can relate to. It’s perfectly suited to an early evening primetime slot being warm and upbeat in its tone – it’s driven by characters who, despite everything, care for and need each other. The show is primarily studio based, so affordable to make, and relatively straight forward to cast… once you’ve found a woman who is nearly 40 but could easily pass as 30, and a young man who is only 24 (or so) but who can pass as older. Alongside the comedy and warmth, the series covers real and relevant issues: teenage bullying; solo parenthood, making ends meet; battling society’s expectations as to what makes a family. All of these things and more are examined, but the main serial element is the romance between Cara, the hot older woman and Dave the sexy younger man.

COMMISSIONED FOR A SECOND SERIES IN NEW ZEALAND

Families come in all shapes and sizes… A light-hearted and comedic family drama from South Pacific Pictures, the makers of Outrageous Fortune, Go Girls and Nothing Trivial. 24-year-old ordinary slacker Dave finds his life turned upside down when he meets Cara, the girl of his dreams… and her three kids. In this light-hearted, feel-good comic drama, Dave finds himself swapping beer and nightlife for homework and school runs. After all, home is where the heart is – even if that home is crammed full of kids, teenagers, ex-mother-in-laws and hangers-on. Step Dave is a sharply observed, warmly comic drama which demonstrates the modern family unit, but amongst all the baggage, can this unconventional relationship survive? Originally produced by South Pacific Pictures for TV2, NZ

Henno Garvie is a tough and charismatic sergeant – single-minded, committed and brave; he is the consummate SAS soldier. Even his superiors defer to his authority. Henno’s troop is second to none and each member has to prove their worth. The challenges that await the Red Troop are unpredictable and always dangerous – there is never a guarantee for their survival. From infiltrating guerrilla activities and terrorist hijacks, to out-witting mastermind criminals and rebel leaders – the team put their lives on the line in the name of their elite fighting regiment.
