HUMAN SMUGGLING RIFE D A I LY X P R E S S

ambodian beggars are being smuggled into Bangkok through the same channels used by people bringing illegal migrant workers, an investigation conducted by the Mirror Foundation revealed yesterday. The report also said that corrupt border immigration officials and police made this smuggling possible. Most of the Cambodian children and adults are transported to the capital on pickup trucks that can go through checkpoints easily thanks to bribes. It only costs Bt500 at each of the seven checkpoints between Bangkok and the Aranyaprathet border town in Sa Kaew province. According to a man who runs a smuggling racket, the Bt3,500 spent is costly enough

and if drivers were to choose other routes, the profits for each run would drop. In fact, transporting Cambodian beggars is becoming such a lucrative business in Aranyaprathet district’s Tambon Pa Rai, that villagers regularly purchase new trucks to transport them to Bangkok. Prime agents usually get between Bt2,500 and Bt3,000 for each adult Cambodian. Accompanying children are not charged because “they do not take up much space” in the trucks. The agents then pay truck owners up to Bt3,000 for each run to Bangkok, Samut Prakan or Chon Buri. Each truck has a sticker detailing the agreement the agent has with the police. The report said the Cambodians also travelled on their own on trains directly

hailand has the most patients suffering from bile-duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma or cholangioma) in the world with six million infected with opisthorchiasis, according to the National Cancer Institute Foundation. Statistics show there are 80 male and 40 female cases for every 100,000 people in the Northeast of the country compared to only one case per 100,000 in the West. Opisthorchiasis is the main cause of the lethal disease. Many people, especially in the Northeast, eat raw or undercooked fresh-water fish. As a result, the region has the highest prevalence of liver cancer. In a bid to reduce the number of patients suffering from such diseases, Bayer Thai and the foundation launched the ‘Liver Cancer Prevention’ project. The project will be implemented in the Northeast. ‘Train the Trainer’ sessions will be held to educate village volunteers in the prevention of liver cancer, particularly cholangioma, so that they can pass on the knowledge to their fellow villagers. he may not have won, but unlikely singing star Susan Boyle showed she could face the music. The 48-year-old church volunteer defied naysayers who doubted her place in “Britain’s Got Talent” and gave a polished performance. Unfortunately, though, she earned second place in the finals on Saturday night, behind a dance troupe called Diversity. It was unlikely to be the end of Boyle’s showbiz dream, however, as she told broadcaster ITV she hoped to release an album and would

“play it by ear”. Boyle, with her show-stopping voice and frumpy appearance, became an Internet phenomenon after she auditioned for the television talent show. For the finals, she returned to the song that made her a YouTube sensation, “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical Les Miserables. She wore a glamorous but modest sparkly floor-length dress, and her once-grey frizzy hair was a soft brown halo. “A lot of people said you

shouldn’t even be in this competition, that you weren’t equipped to deal with it,” judge Simon Cowell told Boyle after her performance. “You had the guts to come back here and face your critics, and you beat them.” The past week had been tumultuous for Boyle. She lost her cool during a confrontation with two reporters, and the police intervened. She had long been expected to win. Diversity are a 10-person dance troupe ranging in age from 12 to 25 years. They weren’t seen as front-runners. Their victory earned them £100,000 (Bt5.4 million) and the right to perform for Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Variety Show in December.

A lone robber armed with a handgun got away with jewellery worth around ¤6.6 million (Bt320 million) in a holdup at the exclusive Chopard store in central Paris. The man, in his 50s, was dressed in a suit and passed himself off as a customer to get in through the security door before drawing his weapon. He ordered staff to give him jewels from the window display. They did as they were told and the man got away on foot, the whole robbery having taken two minutes.

sk any local fan of dance and theatre the last time he or she enjoyed an evening of sheer marvel at the Thailand Cultural Centre, and the answer will almost certainly be Compagnie Montalvo-Hervieu’s “Rameau’s Bossa Fataka”, which closed out La Fete 2008. The good news is that the 2009 edition of the French-Thai cultural festival is set to pick up where it left off, with another equally inspiring performance: “La Fin des Terres” or “Land’s End”. Although the legendary director Philippe Genty, now 71 years old, has been partly influenced by the Japanese largesized puppets known as bunraku, he also blends in dance, theatre and images. These include sexual references that have tagged the performance

as “not suitable for children” in some countries. The photos may suggest puppet theatre but “Land’s Not” is not. If you really want a label, Genty prefers “visual theatre”. In an interview with Time Out Sydney, Genty explained his creation process: “In ‘Land’s End’ I started from a single image that came to me in a dream. There was a woman on a cliff and on the other side there was a man; the man was sending a letter in the wind to the woman. The letter remains in the show as a point of unity.” Even with seven tonnes of equipment for the widest set in the company’s history, including sliding panels that create various perspectives for the audience, “Land’s End” is not a spectacle without essence. “What interest me are not the ideas of human beings in conflict with one another but the vast territories within each

person—individuals facing their own internal conflicts and trying to make peace with their monsters,” says Genty,

Wrapped in an enigma In fact, Genty leaves the performance wide open to inter-

pretation. “It’s not like we are telling a story; it’s a sort of interrelation between what is happening on stage and in the heads of the audience. Very often a spectator is confronted with an enigma and has to find his own answers,” he explains.

La Fete 2009’s opener marks the Bangkok debut of the 41year-old Compagnie Philippe Genty, which has performed on five continents yet never here, and we don’t know when we’ll be taken on such a mesmerising dream again.

Opportunity knocks Taiwanese pop singer Joanna Wang talks about how she made it to the big time

op star Joanna Wang is perhaps Taiwan’s best known singer on the international scene. Recently in Thailand for a mini concert courtesy of Wave FM 88 radio station at the Aksra Theatre, she chatted with Daily Xpress, revealing the secrets behind her success and her feelings about her latest albums.

I NEVER REALISED HOW LITTLE FREEDOM I WOULD HAVE IN TERMS OF MUSICAL CREATIVITY ONCE I SIGNED WITH A LABEL THOUGH I GUESS IT IS MORE SECURE THIS WAY.

Did you get to see anything at all on this trip?

It’s my first time in Bangkok and I’d have loved to see the city but I really only flew in for the show. What do you think of your second album compared to the first?

It’s different from the first. I’m much happier with the second and not just because of the recording and production experience but because it was a much better project for me. I wrote most of the songs myself and went more in my own direction.

DAILY XPRESS/KUNLAPHUN SIRIMAMPORN

Joanna Wang

What inspired you to become a musician?

I love music but I got to where I am today by coincidence really. I never thought that I’d one day be up on stage singing my own songs. It just happened. When opportunity opened a door for me, I didn’t want to abuse it by letting it go to waste. What about your father, was it his idea that you became a signed singer?

No. He knew I loved writing, singing and playing the guitar, so being a producer, he asked me if I wanted to record a demo

‘This dress is nothing’

for fun. That demo got me to where I am today.

Do you have to work twice as hard now that you record in both English and Chinese?

Chinese but not for my own songs.

And is it fun so far?

Let’s just say it’s very time consuming and quite tiring.

Have you already started working on your third album?

Not at all! I never realised how little freedom I would have in terms of musical creativity once I signed with a label though I guess it is more secure this way.

Do you write songs in English or in Chinese?

Mostly in English, though occasionally I do write lyrics in

Yes, I already have a couple of songs, and the style will probably be similar to this album. The music might be a little wackier though.

Veteran actress Naowarat

“Jig” Yuktanan has reached a point in her life when she doesn’t care what other people are saying about her. All that matters is if she’s happy. And it was with that philosophy that Jig boldly stepped out for last Wednesday’s Star Entertainment Awards wearing a barely-there dress that left little to the imagination. Predictably, she drew criticism. “I wouldn’t do it if it was awful,” the 51-year-old actress told Channel 3 newsman Sorrayuth Suthassanajind. “At my age and with this kind of figure, I like to dress up to impress people,” she says. “I’d like to thank fans for their support and hope they understand me.” Sorrayuth tried his best to get Jig to admit her dress was too explicit. She was unrepentant. “The dresses I wear to go dancing are much more revealing. You can see right through. But this dress is nothing because inside I’ve got a stocking all over. I’d like to send the dress to you, Khun Sorrayuth so you can touch it and feel the support throughout the dress,” she told the host, leaving him gape-mouthed and practically speechless.

Nedved checks out of Juventus Czech veteran Pavel Nedved has announced his departure from Juventus in a statement released by the club yesterday. Nedved had said earlier in the season that he would retire from football when this campaign is over but this statement seemed to contradict that. “After eight seasons with Juventus the time has come to say farewell to the fans, my team-mates and the club and thank them all for the support I’ve received.”

Besiktas win Turkish C’ship

Dinara Safina returns a ball to Aravane Rezai yesterday.

Besiktas won their 11th championship title on Saturday, beating Denizlispor 2-1, as the Turkish League drew to a close. The Istanbul outfit, celebrating their first title since 2003, finished the season with 71 points, five points ahead of runner-up Sivasspor, who lost 1-2 against last year’s champions Galatasaray. Trabzonspor clinched third place, mustering 65 points, while the two Istanbul giants, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, finished fourth and fifth respectively, both trailing 10 points behind the champions. Besiktas and Sivasspor will now represent Turkey in the Champions League next season. Besiktas also won the Turkish Cup earlier this month, beating Fenerbahce in the final. – AFP

Bremen’s Brazilian midfielder Diego, in his last appearance in Germany before his move to Juventus, signed off by creating the winning goal for Oezil after 58 minutes. The 24-year-old Diego, who has signed a five-year deal worth 24.5 million euros to move to Italy, beat three defenders and slid a pass into the path of Oezil who fired home Oezil past Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler to give Bremen the winner. – AFP

inara Safina conceded only one game in yet another easy win at the French Open, advancing to the quarter-finals of the clay-court major by beating Aravane Rezai of France 6-1 6-0. The top-seeded Safina won 11 straight games to close out the match. She has lost only five games through four rounds at Roland Garros, and has won four of the eight sets she has played at love. Safina took over the No 1 ranking this year, but she has yet to win a Grand Slam title. She lost to Ana Ivanovic in last year’s French Open final, and fell to Serena Williams in this year’s Australian Open title match. No 20 Dominika Cibulkova also reached the quarter-finals in the women’s draw. The 20-year-

old Slovak beat No 29 Agnes Szavay of Hungary 6-2 6-4 in a sloppy match that had a combined 17 winners and 66 unforced errors. Cibulkova won five straight games in the second set to lead 5-2, but she was broken while serving for the match and had to wait a few more minutes to serve again and advance to her first major quarterfinal. Szavay upset third-seeded Venus Williams in the previous round. On the men’s side, Fernando Gonzalez became the first player to reach the quarterfinals, beating Victor Hanescu of Romania 6-2 6-4 6-2. Gonzalez, who reached the 2007 Australian Open final, ended the match with his 21st forehand winner. He finished with 50 winners and only 16 unforced errors. The 12th-seeded Chilean also reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year, but lost to eventual finalist Roger Federer.

ustralia’s two-time Grand Slam finalist Mark Philippoussis has revealed his tennis fortune is gone, he faces a legal battle to keep his home and has suffered bouts of depression, reports said yesterday. Philippoussis, 32, who earned more than seven million US dollars on the court and millions more off it in endorsements, said he is being sued for failing to pay the mortgage on his re-financed home in Melbourne. Once ranked eighth in the world, Philippoussis said he had been unable to play for three years after several operations on his knee, which ended his ATP Tour playing career. “I bought this house when I was 18, primarily for my mum. But I’m now paying three-anda-half times as much as I’d be paying on a normal home loan,” he said. “Things are tough. Financially tough, but more importantly than that, it’s been the mental side. “I wouldn’t say I’m battling depression, but have I been depressed a lot in the past two years? And freaked out about a lot of things? The answer is yes.” “I haven’t played tennis since 2006, and tennis is one of those sports where if you don’t play, you don’t get paid,” he added. Philippoussis, who inspired Australia to two Davis Cup final victories, over France in 1999 and Spain in 2003, reflected on his fallen status as a one-time tennis celebrity. “I’ve lived an easy life, the life you dream about. And at that time I thought it was normal, but it’s so far from normal,” he said. “Money came in left, right and centre; you just thought that’s how it was for everyone and that’s how it will always be.”

JOY FOR BORDEAUX Team hails coach Blanc after French League title win AP, Caen, France

aving ended Bordeaux’s 10year wait for the French title in just his second season in charge, Laurent Blanc is showing early signs his managerial career could eventually mirror his playing days at the highest level. Blanc had no managerial experience whatsoever when he took over a lacklustre Bordeaux team two years ago. He immediately demanded improvements, and almost fell out with the president Jean-Louis Triaud over his insistent demand for transfer funds. Now, Les Girondins are riding high and the 43-year-old Blanc is one of Europe’s up-and-coming young managers. “No he’s not that good. Because if I say he’s that good, I’ve got no chance of keeping him,” Triaud said jokingly after Bordeaux’s 1-0 win at Caen on Saturday night sealed the club’s first title since 1999. Unbeaten at home, Blanc’s team finished first with 80 points, three more than Marseille. They also won the League Cup, while a second straight qualification for the Champions League will do wonders for Triaud’s coffers. Blanc’s coolness under pressure has epitomised Bordeaux this season, and the team won the last 11 games in the league – while seven-time defending champions Lyon and title rivals Marseille both cracked under the strain. “You can’t do better than 33

It’s championship form,” Blanc said, referring to the 11 wins. “We turned some games around in the last minutes. These memories will be with us forever.” A World Cup winner with France in 1998 and European Champion two years later, Blanc played his club football in hotbeds as Naples and Barcelona before ending his illustrious career under Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. “He thinks clearly. He knows how to analyse things because he went through them as a player,” Bordeaux midfielder Alou Diarra said. “His experience at the highest level is a real plus

HE [LAURENT BLANC] THINKS CLEARLY.HE KNOWS HOW TO ANALYSE THINGS . Alou Diarra for us.” Blanc’s strength was soaking up the pressure, thus shielding his players from it by keeping them relaxed and de-

tached from thinking too much about what was at stake. “He didn’t change anything in the preparations for the last match. He always kept things calm,” Triaud said. Just two hours before Bordeaux’s title decider at Caen, the players lounged around the hotel lobby drinking coffee and chatting to fans before jumping on a locally hired bus – and not an official one brazenly decked out in the club’s colours. They arrived incognito at the Stade Malherbe, and left it as champions. Bordeaux beat Caen 1-0 with Yoan Gouffran scoring the only goal to condemn his former club to relegation.

Chelsea’s German midfielder Michael Ballack, only a substitute for Saturday’s FA Cup final win over Everton, has agreed a one-year contract extension, the BBC reported on Sunday. “I haven’t signed yet but I have agreed for another year,” Ballack, 32, said, adding he expected AC Milan’s Carlo Ancelotti to succeed Guus Hiddink as coach next season at Stamford Bridge. “I haven’t worked under him and I don’t know him very well but you can see from the work he has done at Milan that he is a successful manager,” Ballack told BBC Sport. “It’s not done yet but it looks like he will be coach.” Ancelotti is set to reveal if he is to take charge after the Serie A season ends as interim manager Hiddink, who replaced the sacked Luiz Felipe in February, returns to his job as Russia coach following four months in London. Ballack, signed by Jose Mourinho in 2006, has seen Chelsea win two FA Cups since but insisted that next season he wants to target bigger prizes with Manchester United having dominated the English Premiership since his arrival in England. “What we need at Chelsea is consistency,” he insisted. “There is not much that we need to change to win the Premier League next season. We have a great team, which is the most important thing, but we have to change the manager again and we will need a bit of time to adapt.”– A F P

Atletico’s Diego Forlan after scoring against Almeria.

tletico Madrid secured the final Champions League spot and the millions of euros that accompany it with a 3-0 home win over Almeria on Saturday in the 1,000th game at the Vicente Calderon. Atletico needed just a draw to clinch fourth but they cruised to a 3-0 victory to qualify for the Champions League for the second successive season.

Argentine Sergio “Kun” Aguero and Raul Garcia put Atletico 2-0 up before Diego Forlan scored for the eighth successive match to take his season’s tally to 32 and wrap up the ‘pichichi’ crown for the league’s top-scorer. Atletico join champions Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sevilla as Spain’s Champions League representatives and coach Abel Resino, originally seen as a stop-gap, has staked

his claim to continue in the job next season. “It was a team that wasn’t really united but the players pulled together and that is the secret behind the success,” explained Resino. “As of Monday we will hold talks to see if I continue here or not.” Forlan’s old club Villarreal, runners-up last season, won 32 at Real Mallorca but Atletico’s win meant they had to settle for fifth and a Europa

league place. Valencia clinched the final European spot with a 2-0 home win over defeated Kings Cup finalists Athletic Bilbao. Valencia’s win meant Deportivo La Coruna, who drew 1-1 with Barcelona, missed out on Europe. Barca were given the guard of honour at the Riazor Stadium to salute their historical league, Kings Cup and Champions League treble.

Serena Williams accuses opponent of cheating AP, Paris

S

erena Williams was sure the ball went off her opponent’s arm, a no-no in tennis. The opponent, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, insisted the ball went off her racquet. Williams accused the Spaniard of “cheating.” Martinez Sanchez thought that was a “stupid” thing for Williams to say. Add in that the point in question helped Martinez Sanchez win the first set of their French Open match Saturday. Oh, and that Williams had a coughing fit during a third-set changeover. All in all, what eventually became a 4-6 6-3 6-4 victory for Williams stands as the latest example of the athlete-slash-actress’ penchant for theatrics. “I’m, like, drama. And I don’t

Serena Williams returns the ball to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. want to be drama,” a hoarse Williams said, straining a bit to get the words out. “I’m like one of those girls on a reality show that has all the drama, and everyone hates them because no matter what they do, like, drama follows them. I don’t want to be that girl.” Here’s what happened in Saturday’s third-round match:

At 2-2 in the first set, Williams double-faulted to give a break point to Martinez Sanchez, who is ranked 43rd and never has reached the fourth round at a Major. On the next point, both players moved forward, standing almost close enough to reach over the net for a handshake. On a short ball, Williams smacked a backhand

right at Martinez Sanchez. In an effort to protect herself, as much as to try to hit a volley, Martinez Sanchez raised her racquet, quick as could be. The ball ricocheted back – Off her racquet? Off her arm? – and past Williams. The point was awarded to Martinez Sanchez, giving her the game. As the players headed to the ensuing changeover, Williams tried to say something to Martinez Sanchez, who kept walking. Then Williams spoke to the chair umpire, Emmanuel Joseph. Repeatedly pointing to her own forearm, Williams told Joseph, “I don’t know why you gave her the game. That’s totally not cool.” “I didn’t ‘think’ the ball touched her – the ball DID touch her, 100 per cent, on her arm. The rules of tennis is when the ball hits your body, then it’s out of play. You lose a point,” Williams said. “Therefore, she should have lost the point.”

eBron James isn’t going to the NBA Finals for a showdown with Kobe Bryant. Superman is going in his place. Dwight Howard lifted the Orlando Magic into the Finals for the first time in 14 years, totalling a play-off career-high 40 points and 14 rebounds in yesterday’s home 103-90 victory over James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. “It feels so good,” Howard said. “We’re not done yet. We’ve still got work to do.” Rashard Lewis scored 14 of his 18 points in the decisive first half for the third-seeded Magic, who ousted the topseeded Cavaliers in six games ICE HOCKEY

Red Wings down Pens for 1-0 lead Defending champions Detroit seized the early advantage in the National Hockey League Stanley Cup finals yesterday with a 3-1 victory over Pittsburgh in game one of the championship series. Johan Franzen scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and Chris Osgood made 31 saves for the Red Wings as they took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Franzen and Brad Stuart both had goals that went off Pittsburgh goalie MarcAndre Fleury. “We’re going to have to get goals like that,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said.

in the Eastern Conference finals and will face the Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals opener Thursday. Throughout the play-offs, there have been a pair of advertising campaigns – one from sneaker giant Nike, the other from Coca-Cola’s VitaminWater – pitting 2009 Most Valuable Player James vs 2008 MVP Bryant in anticipation of a meeting in the Finals. Bryant held up his end as the Lakers knocked off the Denver Nuggets in six games to win the Western Conference. But James could not lift the Cavs past the Magic despite averaging 38.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 8.0 assists.

WE CAME OUT WITH THE MINDSET THAT IF WE RUN AND REALLY LOCK IN ON DEFENCE, WE’D HAVE A GREAT CHANCE TO WIN. Dwight Howard

Instead it will be Howard, the 6-11 centre nicknamed “Superman” for his imposing physique and the costumes he has worn during Slam-Dunk Contests at All-Star Weekend. He made 14-of-21 shots and 12of-16 free throws as he put the Magic in the Finals for the first time since 1995, when Shaquille O’Neal was their centre. “My health wasn’t good then,” long-time Magic owner Rich DeVos said. “This time it’s really special. We are happy but we are not satisfied.” “I just think team all year long has shown an incredible amount of heart,” Magic coach

Stan Van Gundy said. “This team just keeps fighting back.” The series had three games decided by two points or less, including one that went to overtime. But this contest was not close as the Magic never trailed and led by as many as 21 points. “It was a tough night,” Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said. “It was disappointing. We had a heck of a season, but we had one goal in mind and we came up short.” Howard attacked right away. “We came out with the mindset that if we run and really lock in on defence, we’d have a great chance to win the game,” Howard said.

Clark takes lead into final round at Colonial A P , Fort Worth, Texas

T

im Clark birdied the 18th hole for a 4-under 66 and a two-stroke lead going into the final round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational on Saturday. Clark moved ahead of playing partner Steve Stricker with a birdie on the 11th hole, then strung together pars until No 18. The South African was at 17under 193 as he chased his first US PGA Tour victory. With $12.7 million in career earnings on the tour, Clark has the dubious distinction of winning the most money without winning an event – 183 so far. He’s finished second six times, including this tournament last year, getting nipped when Phil Mickelson birdied the final hole.

Tim Clark hits his tee shot on the 11th hole during the third round. “I had a great final round last year. I’m going to need that again,” Clark said. “I’m in a different position being in the last group. I just have to stay calm. “It’s tough to win out here;

everyone knows it,” added Clark, 63rd on the tour’s career money list. “Hopefully, I do get that win sometime and it makes things easier. That’s all I can hope for.” Stricker, Steve Marino and

Jason Day were at 195. Marino and Day are also seeking their first tour wins. Marino was the day’s big mover, shooting a 62 for the best round of the tournament so far. It felt even better since his mother, who grew up in Fort Worth, was in the gallery with a group of her childhood friends. He got them shouting with birdies on Nos. 11-13, all set up by approach shots within 5 feet. “I just felt really in control of everything,” he said. “It was a great feeling.” Day shot his third straight 65 and has a local tie, too – he moved to Fort Worth last year and plays often at Colonial Country Club. “My mind is in a really good spot right now,” he said.
