Eight has always been my lucky number so I gave my wife [Supichaya Panyathep] 88-baht-weight gold bars, a 1.18-karat diamond ring and Bt888,888 in cash as a wedding present. Eight children is not out of the question, but we’re just hoping for two at the moment.

Hua Hin sends out the invites to a jazz party for its 100th birthday

D A I LY X P R E S S

To celebrate its 100th birthday, Hua Hin is throwing a greenthemed musical party. The Hua Hin Jazz Festival from June 12-14 will feature three bands from Europe, four from Asia and 15 home-grown acts, all tuning into the theme of “green jazz”.

district court yesterday sentenced filmmaker Nonzee Nimibutr to seven days detention for his latest drunk-driving offence. The judge also suspended his driving licence for six months. After Nonzee’s car sideswiped a taxi on Phaholyothin Road on the night of April 11, police measured his blood-alcohol level at 300 milligrams per millilitre (the legal limit is 50 milligrams).

Repeat drunk driving “I had to drive home after a party to celebrate Kan Kluay II taking Bt80 million at the box office,” said Nonzee, who voiced the character of the Hongsa king in the animated movie. “I am so sorry,” he added. The affair is especially embarrassing to Nonzee as he once presented a “No Drunk Driving” campaign. He was previously caught drunk driving in 2003. “As a repeat offender, he does not qualify for a suspended sentence,” the court said. However, his sentence was commuted from 14 days detention after Nonzee provided useful testimonies. He plans to appeal against the verdict and has been released on Bt30,000 bail. DAILY

WAR on education Five schools in Yala are closed after killing sparks fear that teachers are being targeted

MILITANTS HAVE CONTINUED WITH THEIR TACTIC OF AMBUSHING TEACHERS’ SECURITY DETAILS.

5 years 111 teachers killed

Target killings of schoolteachers, as well as arson attacks against schools, have declined dramatically over the past year but militants have continued with their tactic of ambushing teachers’ security details. Schools are often targeted by Muslim militants in the deep South because insurgents see the country’s education system as an effort by Bangkok to impose values and a national identity that are foreign to the ethnic Malay population. The killing came on the day

ive schools in Yala’s Bannang Sata district have been ordered to close indefinitely after a local teacher was gunned down in cold blood on Monday on his way to school for the first day of term. The bullet-riddled victim was identified as Nathaphol Che-nae, 39, a Muslim from Tambon Thalingchan who taught art at a local school. Police blamed Malay Muslim insurgents for Nathaphol’s murder. The incident raised fears of more such attacks on schoolteachers.

that Lt-General Pichet Wisaijorn, commander of the Fourth Army Area, was chairing an interfaith meeting between religious leaders from the Islamic, Christian and Buddhist communities. The event was aimed at bringing peace to the restive region, where more than 3,500 people have been killed since January 2004. Of those victims, 111 were schoolteachers. Mistrust between the Malayspeaking region and the Thai state is at an all-time high, as each side accuses the other of instigating the violence.

Bt20 million has been spent on headline acts like Shakatak from the UK, Noon from Japan, the Bass Munkeys from the Philippines and Koh Mr Saxman. Compositions by His Majesty the King will be included in all their set lists. “Hua Hin has become Thailand’s jazz town since His Majesty – the Kingdom’s biggest jazz man – took up residence at his Far Away from Worry Palace in 2001,” said Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Panchai Bawonrattanapran at a press conference yesterday.

Green beats As part of this year’s environmental theme, artists and festival-goers will be encouraged to plant more than 5,000 shrubs and flowers. “About 1,000 will planted along the three-kilometre road leading to Her Majesty the Queen’s Rudiwanalai Palace in the Hin Lek Fai sub-district,” said Pisit Soontrerat, the city’s vice governor. “We will be asking everyone to clean up the beach in the morning after each night’s entertainment,” Pisit added. Prachuap Khiri Khan tourist office expects about 150,000 will attend the festival. Phatarawadee Phataranawik D A I LY X P R E S S

Teacher faces jail for having sex with pupil 280 times A Hong Kong primary school teacher was yesterday facing a jail term after being convicted of having sex with a girl pupil 280 times starting when she was 12 years old. At a court hearing on Monday Chu Chi-wah, 39, was found guilty of 11 counts of having sex with a minor over a two-year period from 2004-06. He will be sentenced on June 8. The girl, now aged 17, told police she had sex with Chu 10 times a month on average and slept with him around 280 times over the course of their relationship. Chu, who taught the girl physical education and maths at primary school, began giving the girl private tutorials when she graduated to high school. She would have sex with Chu after private tutorials and was even allowed by her mother to stay at his home overnight. Chu, who denied all the charges, was acquitted on one count of allegedly inducing the girl to have an abortion. – D P A

Act fast to save planet: Clinton You do not have the luxury of just debating what we are going to do, he tells summit of world cities A F P , Seoul

ormer US president Bill Clinton yesterday urged leaders of the world’s cities, which produce over twothirds of greenhouse gas emissions, to act swiftly to save the planet for their grandchildren. Executives from the 40 largest cities plus 17 affiliate municipalities attended the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit, which opened in Seoul. The former US leader, whose Clinton Climate Initiative develops programmes to

help cities cut the emissions blamed for global warming, called for commitments and concrete action at the meeting which ends tomorrow.

Food shortages, drought “You do not have the luxury of just debating what we are going to do and how much money we are going to spend on it,” Clinton said in a keynote speech. He warned that if the world fails to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, it would pay a high price

in food shortages, drought and public health dangers. “It is absolutely certain [that] if we let the worst happen, then the consequences will be so severe that we won’t be able to save the planet for our grandchildren unless we are willing to undertake enormously expensive projects which can now be avoided,” he said. Half the world’s population lived in cities last year and that figure is expected to grow to 70 per cent by 2050, said Clinton, citing UN statistics. Cities occupy just 2 per cent of the world’s land mass yet are responsible for more than two-thirds of global energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Japanese astronaut tests ‘flying carpet’ in space Experiment is part of 16 offbeat tasks selected from ideas sent to the space agency by hundreds of citizens

Japanese astronaut tested a “flying carpet” in outer space, folded laundry and used eyedrops as part of a series of zero-gravity challenges submitted by the public. Standing on a white sheet, Koichi Wakata was gliding smoothly through a cabin of the International Space Station, as if snowboarding, in a video clip posted online by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa).

Using adhesive tape “I flew on this magic carpet by using adhesive tape so that the soles of my feet stayed on it,” the 45-year-old revealed, speaking into a microphone

Eyedrops in zero gravity Tackling another challenge, Wakata showed how to use eyedrops in zero gravity, squeezing out a tiny ball of liquid and letting it perch on the tip of the container before carefully bringing it to his eye. The seven-year-old’s father told police his partner could not resuscitate her wasted body because there was “black vomit and bull ants coming from her mouth”, national newswire AAP reported. The severely malnourished child weighed just nine kilograms when she was found in the bedroom of her Hawks Nest home, in the Hunter Valley north of Sydney in 2007, prosecutor Peter Barnett told the jury. “The skin was distorted due to muscle wasting and [there was] no fat under the skin,” Barnett said. “If images [from] the Holocaust of Nazi Germany concentration camps disturbed you”, Barnett warned jurors, “you might find some of the evidence disturbing.” The girl’s father, 47, and mother, aged 35, pleaded not guilty to her murder. – A F P

ctor Tom Hanks is back in cinemas reprising his role as Robert Langdon in the screen adaptation of Dan Brown’s novel “Angels and Demons”. In an interview released by Sony Pictures, Hanks shares his thoughts about his role and his time in Rome.

What’s the hardest thing about playing Langdon?

Tom Hanks again plays Robert Langdon in ‘Angels and Demons’, a prequel to ‘The Da Vinci Code’.

Figuring out how his mind works; how he leaps from one conclusion to next so deftly. He’s a symbologist with an encyclopaedic knowledge of codes, riddles, symbols, games, puzzles and history. He is perhaps the only man in the world with such expertise. You’ve played Langdon before [in “The Da Vinci Code”]. Is it easier or harder to play a character for the second time?

Nothing is easy – be it the first time or the 21st. Each moment is brand new. Each idea has to be connected to a reality. A familiarity may help but Langdon begins “Angels and Demons” at square one. Is the film faithful to the book?

The book was written when there were rudimentary computers, fewer media outlets and no Internet. Dan wrote that the selection of a new pope was a non-story, covered by skeleton crews from a few TV networks. Now, the choice of the new pope is a mass-media event. What appealed to you about the story?

quires work and passion on both sides. Did you do any research on the Illuminati?

I did research on the era of the Illuminati, re-reading William Manchester’s “A World Lit Only by Fire” and other material. It took the steam out of the conspiracy aspects of “Angels and Demons” but added to the creepiness of the murders. Did you have much contact with Brown during filming?

Dan was in Rome for the beginning of filming of “Angels and Demons” and visited the set throughout the shoot. Did you get the chance to explore Rome?

I was able to experience the city. We lived there for a month, working almost every day in postcard settings surrounded by layers of history. Walking for an espresso and watching a Euro Cup match in small cafe were times to treasure. We were smack in the middle of ancient Rome, the Holy Roman Empire and World War II.

THE WASHINGTON POST

mid a major magazine-industry contraction due to declining print readership and a precipitous drop in advertising revenues, Scott Crawford turned his nascent online music magazine, Blurt, into a print publication. Did the American miss the memo announcing that the print medium is in critical condition? “I don’t think that ever landed in my box,” he laughs. “Who told you that?” The “great magazine dieoff” already claimed Crawford’s previous music magazine, Harp. He still managed to get a new national

glossy about indie rock, alternative country and other strands of semi-popular music onto newsstands. After nine months of an exclusively digital existence at Blurt-online.com, the magazine made its print debut with 30,000 copies in late March. Advertisers, mostly from the music biz, filled 40 of the issue’s 108 pages, and Sonic Youth are already booked for the next cover of the quarterly. Two days after Blurt reached the racks, Alpha Media Group said it was publishing the final print edition of the pop-oriented magazine Blender. The following week, the plug was pulled on men's magazine King.

“The week before I launched Harp, 9/11 happened and the economy was a complete mess,” Crawford declares. “It was a scary time, but we had a great run for seven years. “We’ll see how each issue goes with Blurt, but people have been saying print’s dead since 2001. We’re certainly seeing more and more evidence of it now, but I’m fairly confident. “We’re doing the magazine virtually, with people throughout the country. The only overhead is our respective homes and apartments.” The venture isn’t profitable yet, he adds, “but 2009 is looking very, very healthy.”

Mango goes Mexican, marvellous By Kate Shatzkin T H E B A LT I M O R E S U N

M

y kids love mangoes and I fancied making a dish that matched them with meat as a main dish. So I picked up the ripest mango I could find and made these chicken-mango quesadillas from the new book “Petit Appetit: Eat, Drink, and Be Merry”. I liked this recipe because it shows you that you can bake quesadillas, which is so much easier if you’re feeding a crowd. I’d never thought to do that. The other good part of these is that you can leave stuff out of some quesadillas while including it in others. I knew my daughter probably wouldn't eat the mango, especially if it was mixed in with the cheese, so I left it out of hers and served it on the side.

My son was initially very intrigued by this mango dish, but after trying a slice, he said he would prefer to have his mango straight, without any “other stuff.” If you’re making this your main dish you may want to double the recipe, which is easily done.

CHICKEN AND MANGO QUESADILLAS 4 (20cm) whole wheat tortillas Vegetable oil for brushing (about 4 teaspoons) 1.5 cups grated cheddar cheese 1.5cup

cooked chicken, shredded

1 mango, peeled, pitted and sliced 1.25 cup chopped fresh coriander, optional

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Brush the tortillas with some of the oil. Place tortillas, oil side down, on a baking sheet. Sprinkle each with half of the cheese, half of the chicken, half of the mango, and half of the cilantro. Top each with one tortilla, pressing to adhere; brush top with oil. Bake quesadillas for about 10 minutes, until filling is heated through and edges begin to crisp. Using a large metal spatula, carefully turn each over and bake for an additional five minutes, until bottom is crisp. Transfer quesadillas to plates. Cut into wedges with a pizza cutter. Let cheese cool sufficiently to prevent burning little tongues

Golfer Katayama looks to martial arts

Next season’s Italian Supercup between champions Inter Milan and Cup winners Lazio will take place on August 8 in China, news agency Ansa reported yesterday. The match will round off a week-long football festival in which a tournament will also be contested between three English sides – Tottenham, West Ham and Hull City – and China’s Guoan. – AFP

Shingo Katayama, who finished fourth at this year’s Masters, is turning to traditional Japanese martial arts to improve his golf swing. “I won’t be getting much bigger physically, so I’ve been studying Japanese martial arts to see how they can help me improve,” Katayama said. “I’ve been looking at things like Aikido and even Noh Theatre to see how I can incorporate them into my golf swing.” Katayama also offered Katayama up an explanation for his trademark cowboy hat. “I always thought my face looked oversized so I decided to wear a hat that makes my face look smaller,” Katayama said. – AFP

Cipriani out of England rugby team Danny Cipriani, the fly-half once regarded as Jonny Wilkinson’s natural heir, has been left out of England’s squad for the upcoming home-and-away Tests against Argentina. But 2003 World Cup-winning hooker Steve Thompson has been recalled to a squad that features six uncapped players, including Leicester number ten Sam Vesty, whose form has contributed to Cipriani being included in the second string Saxons squad that will defend the Churchill Cup in Denver, Colorado. The other new faces in the senior squad are Newcastle prop David Wilson and his club team-mate Tom May, a versatile back, Harlequins pair Chris Robshaw and Jordan Turner-Hall, and Gloucester prop Nick Wood. – AFP

Klinsmann

Juergen Klinsmann has broken his silence three weeks after getting fired by Bayern Munich to assert that he would have taken the club to the Bundesliga championship. “I was made responsible for many things I could do nothing about,” Klinsmann said. “The most painful in the whole thing was the feeling that I could have done the job. I could have taken the team to the championship,” Klinsmann said.– AP

MAESTROS VS MUSCLE Shakhtar take on Bremen in Uefa Cup final tonight AP, Istanbul

S

hakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu is predicting a clash of styles when his team takes on Werder Bremen in tonight’s Uefa Cup final. The 63-year-old Romanian coach is preparing his players team for the match in Istanbul – the last ever Uefa Cup final before its rebranding as the Europa League – by making sure they are ready to cope with an athletic, speedy side that’s already knocked out former continental champions AC

Milan and Hamburg. Lucescu said yesterday he expected Bremen to try to physically dominate a young Shakhtar side aiming to become the first from Ukraine to hoist the trophy. “Bremen is the attacking team with very good physique and a lot of really good athletes on their team,” Lucescu said. “And as for Shakhtar Donetsk, the style is based on the good technique of the players and, naturally owing to our specific qualities, they will try to exercise control over the progress of the game.” Whether Lucescu can do so will go some way to demon-

strating how successfully he has managed to emulate the template of youth, skill and tactical flexibility he established in spells with Dinamo Bucharest, Galatasaray and Besiktas. There are just three players over 30 years of age in Shakhtar’s 25-man squad, which features a quintet of skilful Brazilians, of whom midfielders Fernandinho, Ilsinho and likely substitute Willian average just 22 years of age. But if Bremen are looking for omens of theirs own, they may want to consider that Lucescu won just one of his five games at the venue during his four years in Istanbul.

ning captain Fabio Cannavaro from Real Madrid. Cannavaro’s contract with the Spaniards runs out at the end of June and he has signed a one-year deal with the “Old Lady” of Turin. Speaking from the city, where he came to sign his contract, he said: “I’m delighted to have returned to Turin and to have the opportunity to wear the black and white [Juve] jersey again. “I’m sorry that in some fans anger prevails over the appreciation for the glorious seasons we lived through together. “I’m convinced that I can win over even the biggest sceptics through hard work, professionalism and the passion with which I will tackle this new adventure.”– A F P

FOOTBALL

England face a goalkeeper problem

FAILURE REWARDED Flop art fuels compensation culture at Newcastle AFP, Paris

n football’s parallel universe, it pays to fail. Manchester United celebrated an 11th English Premier League title at the weekend – as well as eyeing a potential third European crown under Sir Alex Ferguson – which was achieved on a 2008 wage bill of £121 million. By comparison, Chelsea, out of the title race in England and Europe, have spent £148 million. Up in England’s under-performing Northeast, Newcastle United welcome 50,000 fans to a home game who deliver a million pounds in gate receipts. The club also receives tens of millions more in TV income and have also enjoyed a couple of lucrative, if brief forays into the Champions League. Billionaire sports retailer Mike Ashley, who bought the club in 2007, paid off only part of a debt mountain estimated at around £150 million including outstanding transfer payments. But the club which lifted the last of its four league titles in 1927, and has won nothing for 40 years, has one of the biggest wage bills in the country. Veteran striker Michael Owen earns a reported £4 million a season and even derided “bad boy” Joey Barton makes around three million. Add 10 managerial changes since Kevin Keegan first resigned in 1997 – and the compensation bill for his myriad – and tro-

Striker Michael Owen earns £3 million a year at Newcastle United. phyless – successors has rocketed. Even in the two years since Ashley took charge, compensation pay-outs have topped £15 million – including a reported 1.5 million for unlamented executive director of football Dennis Wise, whose original appointment came following a similar pay-out to his former side Leeds. “There are no plans to appoint a replacement in this role,” Newcastle announced, prompting the London Times to note wryly: “That was a couple of million quid [pounds] in salary well spent then.” Add to that more than 20 million on signing disparate and largely second-rate players and it is hard to identify the club’s business plan – par-

ticularly considering Newcastle sold two of their best players, Shay Given and James Milner, on the way to potential relegation which would cost them an estimated £50 million. On the plus side, another million for coach Alan Shearer’s touchline services for eight games will prove money well spent if the ultimate gamble pays off with survival by the skin of Geordie teeth on Sunday. If diehard Newcastle fans have been crying in their beer all season failure doesn’t have to leave a bitter taste. Ask Sven-Goran Eriksson, sacked as Mexico coach after poor World Cup qualifying form. The suave Swede’s reward?

A third massive pay-off in three years, coming after his jettisoning as England coach after the 2006 World Cup fiasco in Germany which netted him a reported £3 million – (he was originally in line for six) – and then another reported million following his one-year tenure with Manchester City. Beyond football, England may ponder the value of a truncated early summer cricket Test series against a West Indies side whose board demanded a reported US$1.4 million rather than the usual 250,000. Given the West Indies’ abject showing Lords and Chester Le Street, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) might feel the money could have been better spent.

England manager Fabio Capello will have to rely on third-choice goalkeeper Robert Green for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Kazakshstan and Andorra after David James opted for shoulder surgery. Manchester United’s Ben Foster, who had moved past Green in Capello’s pecking order, is also unavailable for the trip to Kazakhstan and the Wembley meeting with Andorra after having an operation to correct a ligament problem in his thumb. James has had a problem with his left shoulder for some time but delayed a decision on surgery until his club, Portsmouth, had secured their survival in the Premier League. He missed Monday night’s 3-1 defeat of Sunderland and decided to have the operation on Wednesday rather than wait until after the England matches, on June 6 and 10, and risk not being fit for the start of next season. The 38-year-old is taking a calculated gamble over his England place by handing Green or someone else the chance to come in and catch Capello’s eye only a year before the World Cup finals in South Africa. James said he had been carrying the injury for 18 months. “I have to look at the bigger picture. I want to be fit for the start of next season and I trust England to do well without me.”– A F P

underland’s struggle to avoid relegation will go down to the wire after lax defending contributed to a 3-1 loss at Portsmouth’s Fratton Park on Monday. The Black Cats’ needed all three points from this visit to the south coast but their Premier League fate will now be determined by Chelsea’s visit next Sunday. Sunderland were left just

two points clear of the drop zone. with a win against Chelsea seeing them safe while anything else and their future will be decided by results elsewhere. Ricky Sbragia’s strugglers remain a point better off than Hull, who host Manchester United, and two ahead of local rivals Newcastle. Portsmouth had already ensured their topflight status last weekend.

Both sides hit the post in a goalless and largely lifeless first half. Then after almost 12 and a half hours without either side scoring a goal, first Sunderland and then Portsmouth put an end to that miserable statistic as a dreary encounter suddenly caught fire. Sbragia, reflecting on the second goal, told Setanta Sports: “We knew in the second half they’d push on to us

and close us down. but we got off to a good start. Kenwyne scored and from then on we should have been a bit more confident and bossed the game. “We kept the lead for two minutes, and that’s not acceptable. The second goal was a bad mistake by Anton Ferdinand. He switched off. I would imagine he should have just put his foot through it and helped it on.”

The French manager also led the Reds’ next visit to Thailand, in 2003. Although the Merseyside club won’t be bringing any titles to the country this time, the upcoming trip scheduled for July 20-23 should be just as special as previous tours, given the organisers’ plan to create the Anfield atmosphere at the Rajamangala National stadium, the venue for Liverpool’s friendly against the national side coached by former Sunderland manager Peter Reid. Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger may be ready to leave the London club for Real Madrid after being “exasperated” at criticism from shareholders and fans, British newspapers report. “It’s more of a possibility now than it’s ever been,” one of Wenger’s aides told the paper. The Frenchman was left “hurt and betrayed” by Arsenal shareholders criticism over his transfer policy and strategy and “is really unhappy with the comments he has had to listen to recently,” the Sun said. Wenger, the most successful manager in Arsenal history, doesn’t feel “fully appreciated” by the club and believes he didn’t have the financial backing he needed, the paper added. Arsenal Chairman Peter Hill-Wood described as “disgraceful” some of the questions addressed by the shareholders during a meeting held last week, the Daily Mirror reported. Meanwhile Real Madrid presidential candidate Florentino Perez is trying to take advantage of this internal turmoil by making an “all-out assault” to sign Wenger from the Emirates, the paper added. Perez is ready to offer Wenger a “free hand” over the transfer market and the club’s technical decisions, the Mirror said. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Adebayor admitted he may quit Arsenal after the supporters turned on him, the Sun reported. “It was not nice playing at home getting booed by my own fans. I didn’t know what to do any more,” the Togo striker was quoted as saying. Adebayor felt he didn’t deserve criticism for being linked to other clubs. “If Porto, for example, wants Adebayor, it is not Adebayor’s fault. Why boo me?” he told the paper. Inter Milan and AC Milan are battling it out over the £24-million signing of the Arsenal forward, the Daily Mail said.
