ife is really short: you can lie in bed all day thinking about what you should do or you can get up, get on your Blackberry and get going. “Chop Chop” is the term I use all the time. Sometimes when my team is sleepy, I pop out of my office and go “chop chop!” You have to get things going. It’s no good putting stuff off because you have so many things to do. My mum always used to say “stop talking about it and just go do it”.

There are now 4,600 Thais waiting for eye transplants, a number that rises by 800 each year, but just 451 eyes were donated last year, says Assist Prof Dr Lalida Pariyakanok, director of the Thai Red Cross Eye Bank. As a result, people are being encouraged to sign up as eye donors in the event of their death. About 750 people have already registered through the “Visible Love” project initiated by the Eye Bank, and the English-language tutorial school Enconcept E-Academy has encouraged its employees, young students and their parents at Enconcept’s 30 branches to register. “Interested people can register at any branch, and until January 31 next year we’ll provide Bt100 for each donation to fund the Education for Development Foundation to provide scholarships at Enconcept schools for disadvantaged students, says Arisara Tanapakit, Enconcept E-Academy’s deputy director. “Donors will also receive a book on dharma as a special gift.”

After two minutes and three seconds with a venomous scorpion in her mouth, Kanchana accomplished the first half of

her feat. Witnesses, including reporters and tourists, were stunned.

‘Death-defying challenge’ Kanchana just smiled: “If you thought this attempt was intense, my next one will leave you speechless. I can’t reveal any details yet, but I’ve started preparing for the most dangerous and death-defying challenge of my life.” Kanchana, a 39-year-old native of Samui, has been a

scorpion queen for years. In 2002, she spent 32 days in a room with 3,400 live scorpions – that world record earned her instant fame. “Breaking this record has been my dream for years,” she said yesterday. Kanchana says she has always loved animals, and has pushed her mental limits to overcome the fear that’s supposedly part of being a woman. Sharing her soft spot for creepy crawlies is the man she married, Thailand’s Centipede King, Bunthawee Siengwong. Yesterday, Kanchana stepped into a glass enclosure contain-

ing 5,000 adult scorpions. Her aim is to stay there for 33 days and 33 nights.

Medics on standby A medical team from Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital is on hand to monitor her physical condition throughout the stay. Somporn Naksuetrong, general manager of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! commented: “The museum is happy to support Nong Na in her worldrecord attempt because we feel that it’s being done not merely as a stunt or entertainment, but to satisfy a deeply felt ambition.”

The King of Pop suffers from Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a rare genetic illness, an unconfirmed report said, adding that he may have to undergo a lung transplant. “He’s had it for years, but it’s gotten worse,” Ian Halperin, author of a book on Jackson, told In Touch magazine. “He needs a

Some of the region’s black salon owners hope their experience with ethnic hair could give them an edge over those who coiffed the likes of Laura Bush or Hillary Clinton. Fletcher, the 52-year-old owner of The Hair Palace

Salon in Mitchellville, Maryland, cites his experience in international hairstyling challenges and working with actress Halle Berry and singer Mya, a Washington native. Not that it’s all glamour for the stylist. Bernard Portelli, who briefly styled Hillary Clinton’s bob back in 1993, recalled working in a simple room in the White House with a shampoo basin, two chairs and plenty of outlets for blow dryers and flat irons. He’s not necessarily eager to go back. Still, if Obama’s tresses dazzle the public, it would be a public relations coup for any salon. And like her fashion, Obama’s hairstyles probably will be scrutinised, as has been the case with other first ladies.

f all the roles Filipino actresssinger Lea Salonga has played in London’s West End, on Broadway and in film, Mulan is her favourite. The star of “Cinderella”, which just wrapped up in Bangkok, likes Mulan for her strength of character – and because the cartoon heroine is Asian as well. “And everything that happened to her were all her choices, whether they were mistakes or triumphs,” Salonga says. As Cinderella, she brought a twist to the original. “The story traditionally ends when the duke fits on the glass slipper, but in our version Cinderella returns to the spot where she and the prince first fell in love, the garden at the castle. She sees the prince there and makes him work a little bit!” Salonga has portrayed over the years some of theatre’s best-known

characters, including Miss Saigon in the West End and Eponine in “Les Miserables” on Broadway, and in the movies gave voice to Mulan and Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine. The 37-year-old is nevertheless quite modest about her success. “What keeps me grounded is when people tell me, ‘You’re not really that great’,” she laughs.

Controversial views

DAILY XPRESS/EKKARAT SUKPETCH

Lea Solanga recently portrayed Cinderella on the Bangkok stage. She’s now in Singapore, where the production is running through next month.

She’s married to Chinese-Japanese Robert Charles Chien, and they have a two-year-old daughter, Nicole Beverly. Of late she’s been vocal in her support of the Philippines government’s legislation on reproductive health, which will controversially inform poor people in the predominantly Catholic country about birth control. “It has the potential to help a lot of people,” she says. “I’m not always going to listen to what the Catholic Church tells me if I have reason not to believe. Poor people can make educated choices.” “Cinderella” is in Singapore through January, then moves on to Kuala Lumpur, Japan and South Korea. And Salonga is looking forward to a return to Filipino cinema soon, following a long diversion to the international stage.

Three fabulous festive outfits Mix and match so that you don’t end up looking like a Christmas tree

THE WASHINGTON POST

F

inding The Perfect Outfit is hard enough day to day, but the holidays bring an avalanche of different occasions – and each can lead to a fashion disaster if you’re not prepared. We singled out three familiar holiday-season scenarios and came up with appropriate looks for each occasion.

Office holiday luncheon We opted for a feminine silk top in rich navy. The high neckline and intricate details make it right for the holidays. The girly vibe is toned down by tailored trousers and minimal accessories, and the ensemble is fin-

ished with a subtly sequined cardigan and a suede peep-toe pump in a contrasting but complementary crimson. Hello, year-end bonus!

LAT-WP

By Holly E Thomas and Michelle Thomas

Meet the parents (for dinner) We wanted to find tasteful pieces with a subtle shine and found that this knee-length matte - gold skirt and plum silk top fit the bill. The frothy, ruffled cardigan and rose-gold shoes with beaded silver tassels add a playful touch without veering into “tweenies” territory. The multicoloured beaded evening bag adds the perfect polish.

New Year’s Eve party This is your chance to start off the year with your style in the spotlight. With every

other party guest sporting black or stale sequins, don’t miss the opportunity to stand out in a splash of colour and luxe accessories. Look for vivid, jeweltone frocks with such detailing as lace, beading or delicate pleating. We chose an of-the-moment dress in an eye-popping violet and offset it with vintage-inspired accessories, including a glittering box clutch and a jewelled cuff. Since fur and feather capelets have taken top billing over previous seasons’ cover-ups, we chose a walletfriendly (and animal-friendly) fake-fur version and paired it with a mixed-metallic beaded necklace. Strut into 2009 in fourinch suede stilettos from party queen Paris Hilton. Now make it your New Year's resolution to always look this fabulous.

When Fuse’s assistant asked me what kind of style I wanted, I was able to show her on the salon’s computer the latest Bond Girl look that had caught my eye. But Fuse reckoned the style would give my face an unflattering roundness, so I told him to do whatever he wished. “You should decide – long or short?” he said. I opted for long, and he did started in with the layering. He’s a gentle, attentive stylist, spending a lot of time on the details, so I struck up a conversation with him about Hachi Salon’s owner, Krirkphol “Fluke” Masayavanich, a favourite of the gossip pages. Dennis Seah, who’s been in the business for more than 20 years, is dispensing “artistic advice” at LS by Le Salon, but he’ll also cut your hair – for Bt6,000. He believes in “hair you can wake up and look fantastic in”. First he asked me about my lifestyle – whether I’m into sports, go to the parties and have a boyfriend. I told him I like short hair but I’m reluctant to get it clipped because most men like girls with long hair.

“Don’t be somebody else’s someone,” he said. “Be yourself!” I was impressed with both stylists. Neither one of them tried to coax me into a perm or dye, as is often the case with Thai stylists. Seah said most Thais overdo the colouring, and Fuse has found that a lot of Thai women have damaged hair.

Once your lips are almost healed, take a toothbrush and softly brush it across your lips to remove all dead skin. In a few cases, chapped lips (medically known as cheilitis) can be related to lipstick, toothpaste or a nickel deficiency.

ow do I cure cracked lips? I’m guessing you have a habit of licking your lips several times throughout the day. Constant licking causes the lips to dry out and crack. Dry air, windy weather and cold temperature add to the dryness and cause chapping lips. To soothe chapped lips, apply a thick lip balm. Many people use plain Vaseline, beeswax or petroleum jelly. Make sure that you consistently moisturise your lips with one of these ointments because it will help your lips heal. To keep lips soft, increase the moisture in

We can still win the title insists defiant Arsenal manager Wenger after draw AFP, London

A

rsene Wenger insists Arsenal can still win the Premier League title despite his side’s failure to close the gap on leaders Liverpool. The Gunners remain eight points behind Liverpool after Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Rafa Benitez’s team at the Emirates Stadium. It is a substantial deficit, especially considering Arsenal still have daunting trips to Anfield, Old Trafford and Villa Park to come, but Wenger is adamant Liverpool will slip up and he expects his team to take advantage. “We are not out of the race because the title is won in May and we are in December,” Wenger

said. “Mathematically we will fight until the end. I believe Liverpool will drop many points. I am convinced of that. “They had four draws at home. That means they dropped eight points, why shouldn’t they drop eight more in the second half of the season?” Wenger took heart from the way Arsenal dug in to take a point after Emmanuel Adebayor’s second-half dismissal for two bookings. But the French coach felt Howard Webb’s decision to send off Adebayor, who had already been shown a yellow card in the first half, for barging into Alvaro Arbeloa, stopped his team taking three points. “Overall I believe we have

shown great spirit and quality for a team down to 10 men but we are disappointed because we wanted two more points,” he said. “But even with 10 men we were quite solid and I think we have improved on our defending in the last month.” Adebayor was furious with the red card. He claimed Arbeloa was guilty of exaggerating the contact and insisted Webb should admit he made a mistake. “I hope when the referee goes home and watches it on the television, he will see it was a foul but I didn’t deserve a card. It was a mistake from him,” Adebayor said. “He said it was for the leg but if I don’t put my body in there I would never score a goal in this league. We have to protect the ball, which is normal and that’s what I tried to do. “The defender threw himself

Liverpool assistant manager Sammy Lee, who took charge of the team while Rafa Benitez recovered from an operation to remove kidney stones, agreed that Arsenal’s battling display showed they are still a title contender. “I have far too much respect for Arsenal. I don’t know anything that has been won or lost in December,” Lee said. “They are such a terrific side, we saw that here. They have quality throughout and there is no way they are out of the title race.” If Liverpool are to end their 18-year wait to be crowned kings of English football, they need Keane to reproduce the superb finish that cancelled out van Persie’s opener on a more regular basis. In Bergamo goals from Alessandro Del Piero and Nicola Legrottaglie gave Juve a 2-0 half-time lead but a firm header from veteran Christian Vieri against his former club made things interesting after the break until Amauri settled Juve’s nerves late on. But it was a highly-contentious goal that put the visitors in front on the half hour. Former Liverpool midfielder Momo Sissoko played a ball down the line to Marco Marchionni who was standing right in front of the linesman and a yard offside. But play was allowed to carry on and the diminutive winger crossed into the box for Del Piero to prod home after Atalanta goalkeeper Ferdinando Coppola missed the ball. Juve boss Claudio Ranieri admitted the goal was offside but said his team deserved to win.

C Milan seemed inspired by the presence of new loan signing David Beckham watching on from the stands as they blew away hapless Udinese 5-1 at the San Siro on Sunday night. That ensured they moved into the three-week winter break, after which they will be able to call on the services of the former England captain, in third place in Serie A, nine points off leaders Inter Milan. In between the bitter city rivals stand Juventus who cut Inter’s lead to six points earlier in the day as they won 3-1 at Atalanta. Pato and Kaka both bagged a brace for Milan and Dutch veteran Clarence Seedorf rounded things off while Antonio Di Natale replied for Udinese. Kaka said he hoped this would help Milan kick on in the title race in the New Year. “We gave our fans a great Christmas present. A match as great as this should be the example for 2009,” he said. Coach Carlo Ancelotti felt the return of Kaka from injury had been a big boost to the team. “He’s a very important player and when he’s not there we miss him,” he said. “Towards the end of the

After a tight first half, the game came to life following a fine goal for Villarreal set-up by a delightful through ball from Giuseppe Rossi and despatched coolly by Ruben Cani from a tight angle. Barca were forced to raise their game and showed their championship credentials with first Seydou Keita equalising from a near post header and then Thierry Henry slotting home a cross from Xavi Hernandez. The visitors had to play the final 17 minutes with a man down after Gerard Pique received his second yellow card. Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said he was taking nothing for granted pointing out that there was still a long way to go in the championship race although they lead by 10 points. “It is comforting to see the way the players are performing but nothing has been decided yet,” said Guardiola after Barca’s victory. “The game was difficult as we expected but we had luck on our side. GOLF

SINGH IS KING Fijian wins with a final birdie at Sherwood AP, Thousand Oaks, California

hree months after winning the FedEx Cup, Vijay Singh padded his most lucrative year in golf yesterday by making a 10-foot birdie on the final hole for a 5-under 67 and a one-shot victory in the Chevron World Challenge. Age has never slowed the 45-year-old Singh, and rust doesn’t appear to be much of an issue, either. Singh has not competed in stroke play since September 28 at the Tour Championship, where he wrapped up the FedEx Cup and its US$10 million prize. Three months later, he ran off three straight birdies early on the back nine at Sherwood Country Club, then holed a 10-footer on the final hole to beat Steve Stricker (68) by one stroke. Singh won $1.35 million, pushing his earnings for the year over $18 million. That includes the $10 million bonus from the FedEx Cup, and the $6.6 million on the PGA Tour to win the money title for the third time in six years. “Very unexpected,” said Singh, who finished at 11-under 277 and won Tiger Woods’ charity event for the first time. “I was just hanging in there. I figured if I shot 67 or 68, I would be right there with a chance.”

Charitable players Anthony Kim, the 54-hole leader, and Jim Furyk did their own charity work on a splendid afternoon of sunshine. Kim was one shot out of the lead until making consecutive double bogeys, driving into the bushes on the 14th and hitting

He birdied the next two holes, but by then it was over. Kim closed with a 73 and tied for third with Hunter Mahan, who shot 68. Furyk, playing for the first time since the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda on October 15, built a two-shot lead on the front nine until a pair of threeputt bogeys. He was tied with Singh after a 6-foot birdie on the 13th, and still only one shot behind from the middle of the fairway on the par-5 16th when it all came undone. He twice went into the rough and made bogey on the 16th, missing the par-3 17th green to drop another shot and with the tournament already decided, found the water on the 18th hole for the second straight day to make double bogey. Furyk wound up dropping five shots over the final five holes for a 74 and tied for fifth with Camilo Villegas (73). Ben Curtis was the only other player in the 16man field to finish under par.

Luck turns for Vijay Singh’s fortunes began turning on the par-4 sixth hole, where he had made bogey each

of the first three rounds. He answered with a birdie in the final round, and when Furyk threeputted from long range in group behind, the Fijian was back in the game. “That got me all fired up,” Singh said. “I played solidly. And the putter started working when it got inside 8 to 10 feet.” That was the range for his three straight birdies that put him in the lead.

Tiger, take next year off He made small talk with Woods as they waited for the final group to finish, and Singh jokingly told Woods at the trophy presentation, “Don’t come back too soon. Take another year off.” Even with Woods at full strength, Singh has been up for the challenge. He has won 23 times since turning 40, and his 34 career victories on the PGA Tour are the most by a foreignborn player. The Chevron World Challenge doesn’t count, but it felt like a victory considering the elite gathering. And it came at a good time for Singh, who starts the 2009 season in three weeks at Kapalua.

AP, Paarl, South Africa

L

ocal favourite Richard Sterne won the South African Open on Sunday after defeating Gareth Maybin of Northern Ireland on the first play-off hole. The pair were tied at 14-under 274 after 72 holes at Pearl Valley Golf Estates, and Sterne (66) birdied the playoff after Maybin (70) pushed his tee shot into a fairway bunker and

was only able to make par. Sterne hit what he described as the best bunker shot of his life on his final regulation hole after pulling his approach left to land in the sand with very little green to aim for. “I don’t even remember hitting that bunker shot,” Sterne said. “I was trying to hit it to 15 feet, to be honest, to give myself a chance there, and it just came out perfect.”

IBRA IS BETTER! Mourinho roasts Ronaldo ahead of Inter-Man U tie

ristiano Ronaldo may have been crowned champion of England, Europe and the world as well as picking up the Ballon d’Or this year but Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho still doesn’t think he’s the best. Mourinho believes that his own Inter forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Sweden is one of those that are better than his countryman. Speaking to Italian TV hostess Simona Ventura, Mourinho said there were several players better than the Manchester United winger.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is in love with football, has a big heart and is aggressive, according to Jose Mourinho.

Kaka, Messi phenomenal “When I think about how a player should be what comes to mind is players like Kaka, Ibrahimovic and [Lionel] Messi, who is a phenomenon and in two or three years will win the Ballon d’Or,” he said. “Ronaldo is a good player but he’s certainly not the best. He deserved the Ballon d’Or because his team won the Champions League and Premier League, he played and he scored. But for me, Ibrahimovic is better.” Ronaldo will get the chance to test his skills on the same pitch as Ibra when United and Inter meet in the Champions League second round in February and March. It is the type of match-up that Ronaldo has faced before when talk of who is the best player in the world has arisen.

In the 2007 Champions League semi-finals United met AC Milan with Kaka out-shining Ronaldo as the Italians reached the final and the Brazilian went on to be crowned the world’s best player.Earlier this year United played Barcelona in the semifinals and although Messi was largely more effective than Ronaldo, the English team went through and Ronaldo went on to take the accolades.

Swedish ideal player But for Mourinho his enigmatic Swedish forward is the ideal player, more so than Ronaldo. “Zlatan is in love with football, he has a big heart and he is emotionally aggressive,” continued the Inter boss. “When I made him play

many matches in a row, for the Italian football world I was doing what destroys children. “But what I was trying to do was build a team with mental strength and he is in the perfect condition to win the Ballon d’Or. He should win it.”

who stays close to him, whether that’s a friend, a teammate or a relative. And that doesn’t interest me. “President [Massimo] Moratti wants him to stay, and so do I but if he asks to leave I won’t stop him, he’s still got 10 years of football ahead of him.”

‘Adriano needs a tutor’ While Mourinho seems to adore Ibra, he clearly has no such sentiment for Brazilian forward Adriano, who looks certain to leave the club sooner rather than later. “When I arrived people said the change of coach could be good for him. At the beginning it was but after that he didn’t continue at 100 per cent. “To be a top professional a player doesn’t need his coach to control him. Adriano, though, needs a tutor, someone

Drogba is part of me Even if he does leave, though, Mourinho said it is unlikely that he will be replaced by Didier Drogba. “I’ve never hidden my special relationship with Didier but I don’t need another striker as I already have [Hernan] Crespo, [Julio] Cruz, [Mario] Balotelli and Ibrahimovic. “But Drogba is more than a player for me, he’s a part of me, an extension of the coach on the pitch.”

he Tennessee Titans and New York Giants both clinched home field advantage throughout the National Football League play-offs yesterday with tenacious victories. The Titans rallied for a 3114 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers to lock up the top seed in the American Conference. Super Bowl champions Giants downed Carolina 3428 in overtime to capture home field advantage in the National Conference. The surprising Atlanta Falcons also booked a playoff berth, but elsewhere the penultimate week of the 2008 campaign left plenty of teams with something to fight for. Rookie Chris Johnson and LenDale White rushed for touchdowns in the second half for the Titans. Atlanta capitalised on defeats of conference foes Dallas, Tampa Bay and Philadelphia to punch their play-off ticket and help keep the NFC play-off hunt open going into the last weekend.

Reigning overall champions Bangkok, who took home a total of 131 gold medals in the previous Games in Nakhon Si Thammarat, have so far won 109 golds, 67 silver and 59 bronze medals. Chiang Mai, who claimed seven golds yesterday including five in the rowing, are trailing a distant second with 33 golds. Chon Buri are in third place with 31 golds, with Suphan and the host province taking 18 and 17 golds to trail in fourth and fifth places respectively. A haul of 68 gold medals is up for grabs in 17 sporting disciplines today. The largest number will be in the boxing competition, where 17 golds are on offer in both men’s and women’s events.

uropean team captain Jose Maria Olazabal has added power and length to his side by including Johan Edfors in his defence of Royal Trophy scheduled for January 9 to 11 at Amata Spring Country Club. One of the biggest hitters in golf today, the thirty-three year-old Swede is expected to thrill the fans with his over 300 yards drives when he returns to Thailand for his second Royal Trophy appearance. The lanky Edfors delighted the galleries at the event in 2007 with his monster hitting, at times clearly overpowering his opponents and distorting the challenging 7,470-yard layout. Edfors was the only player to win all three matches and was most definitely a critical factor in the European triumph, which set the Asian stars thirsting for their first victory.
