The Rice Department told Daily Xpress that up to 2,279 people called the department between January 6 and 15 to ask for information and register for a free course on how to make the rice and other products. Healthy rice juice The germinated brown rice or GABA-enriched rice gained huge interest following reports in early January that the healthy rice juice had been offered to His Majesty the King, so the department opened phone lines to help thousands hungry for information. “Each time our officials hung up, another call would come in immediately. This happened during the first week after
opening the lines,” the official said. About 250 people on average have called the department each day during the period. Most of them asked how to make the rice juice, where to sell it and what price they could command. The department also reported that the rice, and products made from the crop, have been in short supply.
A trend Associate Professor Orapin Kerdchoechuen of the Centre for Research and Development of Tropical and Sub-Tropical Crops at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi is one of the researchers who developed the
rice over the past five years and sold it for more than two years. She said eating the rice has now become a trend. “Only two days after an article was published on the rice, over 100 people called us to reserve 400 kilograms as it has been out of stock since the beginning of this month,” Orapin said. Krongkarn Jarupoom, a 72year-old housewife, was one of those who attended the free course despite a long wait. She wanted to learn about the rice in the hope that it would help cure her husband’s forgetfulness and her diabetes. “I’ll try to make the rice every day, though it’s difficult to find rice suitable for germination,” Krongkarn said.

SECOND: Remove the grains from the water and wash them again. Store them in a thin piece of cloth and protect them from light for at least six hours or until you see the embryo of the grains sprout 0.1 centimetre. THIRD: Wash the germinated rice grains and cook them immediately, or if you want to store them for longer time you can bake them at 65 degrees Celsius until the humidity of the grains is reduced to 11-14 per cent. Beware of imposter monks Seems like the downturn is bringing out the worst in some of us. In the face of a worsening economy, more and more men are using monks’ saffron robes as a means of getting money from others. “We have found an increasing number of monk impostors since last year, when the economy started to turn sour,” Phra Rattanamethee said yesterday. He heads the Buddhist clergy’s patrol and monitoring division in Bangkok. According to him, the latest case of a monk impostor was found just behind the Samiannaree Temple in Don Mueang district. “He pleaded guilty,” Phra Rattanamethee said. “He said that by acting like a monk he could get free food from religious people and share it with his daughter. And in the evening he could still live a normal life.” The impostor was reported to the police. Phra Rattanamethee said impostors generally do not fear legal action because their offence carries a light punishment. “Some impostors say they welcome the arrests because they always get free clothes from police as a replacement for the saffron robes that must be removed,” the senior monk said. In fact, many genuine monks who brought the impostors before police have reportedly agreed to give the no-gooders some money. amart Pongjanta has been visiting a local hospital every day since Thursday to treat injuries sustained from a cellphone battery explosion. There are wounds on his legs, his right hand, his right cheek, his abdomen, his throat and even his penis, and the wounds must be cleaned on a daily basis. “I’d never thought a cellphone battery could explode,” the 21-yearold truck driver said yesterday. He had used a Nokia 3310 cellphone and usually charged its battery. A Franco-Mexican child bullfighter killed six young bulls in a controversial spectacle that child protection and anti-bullfighting campaigners had hoped to stop. “I’m happy to have achieved this great victory,” said the 11-yearold matador before leaving the bloodied bull ring in Merida, southeastern Mexico. A local judge earlier gave the go-ahead for the child to fight six calves aged from one to two years after reviewing licences and permits submitted by the child’s father, former French bullfighter Michel Lagravere. Animal-rights groups and child protection officials had previously complained to the state humanrights commission to suspend the event. A video of the fight will be sent to Guinness for consideration for a world record – for the number of bulls killed and the age of the bullfighter. lobal warming may create “dead zones” in the ocean that would be devoid of fish and seafood and endure for up to two millennia, according to a study published yesterday. Its authors say deep cuts in the world’s carbon emissions are needed to brake a trend capable of wrecking the marine ecosystem and depriving future generations of the harvest of the seas. In a study published online by the journal Nature Geoscience, scientists in Denmark built a computer model to simulate climate
change over the next 100,000 years. At the heart of their model are two well-used scenarios which use atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas, as an indicator of temperature rise.
Worst scenario Under the worst scenario, CO2 concentrations would rise to 1,168 parts per million (ppm) by 2100, or about triple today’s level. Under the more optimistic model, CO2 would reach 549 ppm by 2100, or roughly 50 per cent more than today.
The temperature rise that either would yield depends on several factors: when the peak in carbon emissions is reached and how quickly it falls, and whether the warming unleashes natural triggers, or tipping points, that enhance or prolong the warming in turn. Taking such factors into account, the scientists predict a possible rise of around five to seven degrees Celsius over pre-industrial times under the worst scenario. Under the other scenario, there would be warming of roughly between two to four degrees Celsius. Either scenario spells bad news for the ocean, said Jens Olaf Pepke Pedersen, a physicist at the Technical University of Denmark.

aunched six years ago by the national arts centre Esplanade as one of three cultural festivals celebrating Singapore’s multi-ethnic heritage, the 2009 edition of “Huayi: Chinese Festival of Arts”, which starts on Friday, promises a delicious feast of entertainment. “Huayi has become a recognised platform to develop and showcase new works,” says JP Nathan, Esplanade’s director
of programming. “This year, we are especially pleased to be working with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the Finger Players and new theatre company Paper Monkey.” In “Chinese Opera Meets Animation with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra”, familiar characters like “Red Cliff ” strategist Zhuge Liang and Yang Guifei of the “Four Beauties” are brought to life through the soaring Beijing opera vocals of Zhao Qun and Fu Xiru and captivating ani-
mation by the China Academy of Art. Incorporating their signature puppetry, “Whispers” by Singapore’s Finger Players, tells the story of three women who run away to rediscover the long-suppressed whispers of their heart.
Theatrical feng shui For younger audiences, Paper Monkey presents “The Journey West: White Bone Fiend”, a much- loved Chinese adventure epic, through traditional hand puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppets and human actors. Huayi’s curtain raiser is
“Design for Living” by the Edward Lam Dance Theatre from Hong Kong and Taiwan. The production examines the complexities of the struggle for love, wealth and power. Actress-director and Golden Horse winner Sylvia Chang co-wrote the script and also plays the leading role. Another highlight is Zuni Kosahedron’s drama “Tears of Barren Hill”, which was originally created and performed in 1929 by Beijing opera artist Cheng Yanqiu. The story of a woman searching desperately for her husband, it explores issues of humanity against a backdrop of upheaval.
Music fans will not want to miss “in::music” featuring works by independent singersongwriters from Singapore and the region. Meanwhile, classical music enthusiasts await Fan Jingma’s – one of China’s leading vocalists – rendition of Chinese and Western folk songs. With limited space, urbanites wanted better doghouses to compensate for their pets’ lack of freedom to run around.” There’s quite a choice in styles and sizes, more than 20 models in all, and everything can be customised. They all come in kits, which have proved to be a popular
export around Asia and to Europe. The Mini Doghouse is 65x60x55 centimetres and sits in the shadow of the Euro Gigantic Dog Cage, measuring 205x175x155cm. The Mini Twin lets canines bunk in pairs while still maintaining their personal space. hough he’s no longer the fiancé of superstar Amita “Tata” Young, Prem Busarakamwongs says he still enjoys life. Boxing practice, his restaurant and a new career in entertainment keep him busy. Prem is heir to the famous Fairtex brand of muay thai camps whose name packs a punch from Pattaya to Japan, Hong Kong and the US. Two or three times a week he sets aside an hour from his busy schedule to kick back with some kick-boxing. “It’s been my favourite pursuit since childhood,” he says.
He admits to being depressed by the sight of Thai parents sending their children to classes for foreign martial arts like taekwondo. “I’ve grown up with muay thai,” he says. “It’s part of our cultural heritage and I think we should all help preserve it. As well as self-defence it provides a special camaraderie you only get with other boxers.”

Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro edged fellow rising star Marin Cilic with defending champion Novak Djokovic due on court later against crowd favourite Marcos Baghdatis, the 2006 runner-up. Federer looked out of it at two sets down before Czech 20th seed Tomas Berdych froze in the third, allowing the Swiss to come back 4-6 6-7 (4/7) 6-4 6-4 6-2 and stay on course for a record-equalling 14th Grand

Federer has not recovered from that position since 2005, when he fought past Rafael Nadal in the Miami Masters final, and has not failed to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinals since the 2004 French Open. It follows the PGA of Australia announcing on Friday that the Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship will be part of a new “super series” of Asia-Pacific golf tournaments from this year. It said it had agreements with the China Golf Association, the Japan Golf Tour, the Korea Golf Association and the Korea PGA to launch the series, which will begin with six elite tourneys. They are scheduled to start with the China Open from April 16-19 and wind up with the Australian PGA Championship on December 10-13. ony Adams admitted Portsmouth got exactly what they deserved as the FA Cup holders crashed out in the fourth round after being out-played and out-fought by Championship team Swansea. Adams was horrified by his team’s lack of desire and their failure to impose themselves during a dismal display at Fratton Park on Saturday. Last season, Portsmouth were parading the cup around Wembley after Harry Redknapp’s men defeated Cardiff in the final. But a lot has changed at the Premier League club in the last seven months and Adams has presided over a shocking run since Redknapp quit to take over at Tottenham.

enya stamped their authority in long distance running by taking the top five spots in the men’s event while Thailand’s best hope Sunisa Sailomyen retained her crown in the 6th Khon Kaen International Marathon yesterday. More than 40,000 runners took part in this year’s race which comprised the 42.195km marathon, 21.10km halfmarathon, 11.55km minimarathon and 4.5km walk and run for health.
