e always make a fuss about the winners of film awards, beauty contests or any competition. We tend to take competitions too seriously. In the end, who cares? Who remembers all those who won – like who was Miss Universe in 2001, or which film won the Oscar in 1989? Life is too short. AN OLD FORT COMMUNITY’S LAST STAND Residents behind Mahakan Fort in Bangkok put up a last fight to stay in their 150-year-old home

he long-time residents of the Mahakan Fort community are fighting for a chance to transform their home into a living museum. Without the transformation, all of them will be moved to make way for a public park earmarked for the area. “We are offering a win-win situation,” said the community’s former head Thawatchai Woramahakhun yesterday. The residents are asking the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) for a little more than one rai of the five-rai space to live on.

‘We will help the BMA’ “In return, we will help the BMA watch over the park at no charge,” Thawatchai said. “We have lived here for a very long time. We love our community and we would protect it well.” The community along the canal behind Mahakan Fort dates back 150 years and currently has 312 residents. “My family has lived here for six generations. I can’t imagine living anywhere else,” 51-yearDAILY

old Thawatchai said. “My ancestors were among the first makers of Thai musical instruments in the Rattanakosin Island area.”

Relocation not enough Wimol Dansa-ard, 52, is leading the residents’ protest against the eviction, which was originally authorised by an emergency decree in 1992. In 1994 all residents who promised to relocate were offered compensation, 75 per cent of which has already been given. “We will return the compensation we have received,” Wimol vowed yesterday, “We can’t accept the relocation because the plot of land we have been given is too remote and lacks proper infrastructure.”

‘Hold public forums’ Wimol is now demanding that public forums be held to discuss the future of the Mahakan Fort community. “Please invite neutral academics to the forums and then hold a public hearing. Then, if the public disagrees with our idea, we will agree to move out.”

By Chularat Saengpassa, Jeerawan Prasomsap

He said the emergency decree that authorised the relocation of residents could be amended. “The BMA should stop cornering us with legal stuff,” Wimol said. “We should be cooperating and exploring solutions together.”

Living museum proposal Thawatchai said the residents were just asking for an opportunity to prove that they could create a living museum and become

part of the public park. Deputy Bangkok Governor Prakob Jirakiti, however, said the proposal sounded too complicated to carry out. He added that the BMA had held many public forums on the people living behind the Mahakan Fort before. “The residents may petition for help but whether the petition will give them what they want is another matter. Their proposal is not in the public interest,” said Prakob.

The executives of Sun System yesterday met with the governor of Phichit, the home province of the nine-year-old boy, to discuss the content of a five-chapter comic book featuring Keigo’s quest for his dad. he public is being invited to decide on a name for the first panda born in Thailand. Participants in the upcoming postcard vote also stand a chance of winning at least Bt1 million in cash. “The winner from the lucky draw may get a car too,” Zoological Park Organisation (ZPO) director Sopon Damnui revealed yesterday. Born last Wednesday at Chiang Mai Zoo, the female cub has become an instant media superstar and a hit with people all around the country. So far, this baby has been nameless, but not for much longer.

Choose and win Sopon said the public will first be asked to come up with names. The ZPO board will then choose four of the best,

which will be put to a public vote. “Those who submit one of the chosen names have a chance of winning Bt100,000 plus a free trip for their family to visit pandas in China.” Giant pandas Chuang Chuang and Linhui have been on loan to Thailand from China since 2003. Linhui has been nursing her offspring for over a week now. The baby has increased in weight from 200 to 290 grams and the skin around its ears and eyes is beginning to blacken. Under the agreement between the two countries, the baby has to be returned to China within two years. “We will try to persuade China to let the panda family to stay here longer,” said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti, who visited zoo to see the new arrival yesterday. “We hope China will agree to set up a permanent panda-research centre in Thailand,” Suwit added.

Songs from the Underground California’s alter-rock veterans have come up with an EP featuring six popular tracks from the past seven years and two never-released live tracks recorded during their Projekt Revolution 2008 tour, including a live cover of Temple Of The Dog’s “Hunger Strike” sung by Chris Cornell that’s lively and cheerful thanks to plenty of audience input. “Qwety” is a studio version with Chester’s signature screams and actual rapping from Mike Shinoda, who also does the honours on “Dedicated”. The album wraps with the 12minute “Part Of Me”.

Following the success of their 2006 pop-punk release, “Don’t You Fake It”, Florida’s alternative rockers have opted to mix classic rock and punk staples on their sophomore. “Pull Me Back” and “Senioritis” are both strong tracks with catchy hooks and “Step Right Up” is a catchy, radioready anthem. I personally prefer the title track, an interesting acoustic ballad. “Pen and Paper” and “Pleads and Postcards” are reminiscent of Angels and Airwaves, while closing number “Godspeed” would be perfect for a movie soundtrack.

Alex Ferguson told veterans Paul Scholes and Gary Neville they are still in his plans and that he won’t let them leave Manchester United, the Daily Mail reports. Stoke and Bolton are interested in Scholes, while Neville is wanted by Middlesbrough, the paper said. “I think Ryan Giggs and Scholesy will have absolutely no problem next year,” Ferguson was quoted as saying. “Gary will hopefully get a consistent run as he’ll be vital for us as well.”

Villarreal sign Valverde

Alonso for Real Madrid?

Villarreal has signed Ernesto Valverde to replace departed coach Manuel Pellegrini. The Spanish club said that it signed Valverde to a one-year deal with an option for an extra year. Valverde replaces Pellegrini, who signed a two-year contract to coach Real Madrid after five years in charge at Villarreal. Valverde was released by Olympiakos after leading the Greek club to a league-cup double. Valverde previously coached at Athletic Bilbao and Espanyol, guiding the Spanish League club to the 2007 Uefa Cup final. – AP

Real Madrid may use 23-yearold striker Alvaro Negredo as bait in a plan to sign Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso in a £25million deal, newspapers including the Sun reports. Negredo scored 19 goals for Almeria in La Liga last season and Real is set to resign him, invoking a £4.4 million buyback close, the paper said. Liverpool manager Alonso Rafael Benitez may prefer a straight cash deal for about £20-million, the Express added. “I’ve not spoken with Benitez but I know some contact exists between the clubs,” Negredo was cited as saying by the Sun.

Amnesty for Indian cricket deserters The Indian cricket board has “granted amnesty” to 79 players who want to sever their ties with the unofficial Twenty20 Indian Cricket League. Board of Control for Cricket in India’s secretary, Narainswamy Srinivasan said the players had sought to resume participation in official competitions. “Seventy-nine current players and 11 former test cricketers have severed their relations with the Indian Cricket League and applied for rejoining the mainstream of Indian Cricket under the amnesty scheme offered by BCCI,” Srinivasan said. – AP

afael Nadal’s uncle and coach, Toni Nadal, has called spectators at the Roland Garros tournament in Paris “stupid” for cheering the world No 1’s elimination from the event over the weekend. “I think the Parisian public is so stupid,” he said in an interview with news radio Cadena Ser broadcast late on Monday, one day after Nadal’s four-year Roland Garros reign came to an end at the hands of Sweden’s Robin Soderling. “The triumph of a Spaniard

player has won Roland Garros since Yannick Noah in 1983. “I suppose that it annoys them to see that Spain is constantly producing very good players,” he said. Meanwhile, Romanian teen Sorana Cristea probably won’t have time this week to hit her high school books before facing off against Australian Samantha Stosur in a breakthrough quarter-final at the French Open. Despite her transient lifestyle, the smiling Romanian says she tries to keep up a normal school regime. Cirstea, who faces late-summer exams, said her favourite subjects are English, which she speaks near-flawlessly, and geography.

Nadal, who was seeking a record fifth consecutive title, crashed to a fourth round 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 defeat to the Swedish 23rd seed. It was his first ever defeat at Roland Garros after winning 31 matches since his 2005 debut. “He played very badly and Soderling was better. He was more nervous than usual, lacking confidence and his shots lacked precision,” said Toni. In another interview with radio Onda Cero, he said the French “are a bit jealous of the Spanish” because no French

Kuznetsova says she shares similar interests with Serena.

Russian seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova says she won’t be intimidated by American world No 2 Serena Williams when the two go headto-head for a place in the French Open semi-finals on Wednesday. Williams has a 5-1 career record against the 23-year-old Russian, but Kuznetsova, a runner-up at Roland Garros in 2006, said the pair were too close for there to be any thoughts of fear in her mind. “I respect her a lot,” said Kuznetsova. “She’s achieved an unbelievable amount in tennis. Every player dreams about achieving what she’s done in tennis. Outside of the courts, she has a great personality. We text on BlackBerry. Definitely in these tournaments we talk less, but we listen to similar music and we have similar interests. We laugh a lot. “Maybe before, she and her sister Venus were kind of intimidating.”

Kaka digs in as Chelsea go hunting

SOCCER’S HOT SEAT Pellegrini the engineer tasked with rebuilding Real Madrid AFP, Madrid

eal Madrid’s new coach Manuel Pellegrini will be under pressure to achieve some early success for new president Florentino Perez, who has vowed to build the “best club of the 21st century”. The Chilean, 55, a qualified civil engineer, replaced Juande Ramos on Monday as Real’s seventh manager in the past decade. Pellegrini arrives in the Spanish capital after five years at Villareal, during which time he maintained the small club in the top flight of the Primera Liga. In his first season there, Villareal finished third in La Liga and achieved their first direct qualification for the European Champions League going on to the semi-finals before losing narrowly to Arsenal. Last year, the club, based in a town of just 48,000 inhabitants, achieved its best ever season, finishing as runner-up to Real Madrid. The Champions League will be the main objective next season for Pellegrini and Real, whose last European title was in 2002. Spanish media speculate that Man United’s winger Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Spanish star Xabi Alonso are both in Real sights. Known for his attention to detail and careful planning, those around Pellegrini, a father of three, describe him as intelligent, religious and reserved.

Manuel Pellegrini’s No 1 objective will be to win the Champions League for Real Madrid next season. “He takes care that the players are happy and relaxed so that they can perform well,” said Mario Lepe, the captain of Chile’s Catholic University team, which Pellegrini coached from 1994 to 1996. In presenting Pellegrini to the press yesterday, Perez described him as “an intelligent professional, a worker, well-balanced ... who always tries for elegant and tasteful football”. The fifth of eight brothers, Pellegrini played almost his entire career with the Deportivo Universidad Catolica, one of Chile’s most successful clubs, from 1973 to 1986. Success as a manager with LDU Quito in Ecuador (1999-

WHEN I STARTED MY CAREER I SAID THAT I WOULD END IT BY LEADING REAL MADRID . Manuel Pelligrini 2000) and in Argentina with San Lorenzo (2000-2002) and River Plate (2002-2003)

brought him to the attention of Villareal. The Spanish press said he is a personal gamble for Real’s new director general Jorge Valdano, also named on Monday. At Villareal, he was under little pressure from fans or the press. But that will be quite different at Real, especially with Perez hungry to “return Real Madrid to its rightful place.” “I feel emotion and proud to be chosen to lead the most important club in the world,” Pellegrini said Tuesday. “When I started my career 23 years ago I said that I would end it by leading Real Madrid. Now that I have accomplished that, I can say that it is a dream.”

Kaka has once again stated his desire to stay with AC Milan and pleaded for the constant speculation about his future to end. “I want to tell the millions of Milan fans that I have made my choice,” Kaka said in La Gazzetta dello Sport yesterday. “I have said I want to stay, now leave me alone please. Write it. I want to stay with Milan and from today this issue is over.” The Spanish press reported on Monday that he would be presented as a Real Madrid player later this week. There have also been reports in the English media that he will follow Carlo Ancelotti to Chelsea. “I will say it for the last time, the last time. I don’t want to leave Milan.” Meanwhile, the Independent reported that Chelsea started informal talks with AC Milan over a bid of as much as £70 million to sign Kaka. The price is linked to the Italian clubs agreement to release Ancelotti a year before the end of his contract, the paper said. Kaka would earn about £150,000 a week, topping Chelsea’s pay structure. Ancelotti also wants Milan striker Alexandre Pato and is ready to offer £30 million for the 19-year-old Brazilian, the Sun reported. Portsmouth and England defender Glen Johnson, Milan’s Andrea Pirlo and Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor are also on Ancelotti’s wish list, newspapers including the Daily Mail said. AGENCIES

ston Villa captain Gareth Barry is in talks with Manchester City over a transfer to the Premier League’s richest club. The England midfielder almost joined Liverpool a year ago because of what he said was a desire to play in the Champions League, but may now be about to join a City side that finished six places and 22 points behind this sea-

son’s four qualifiers. Villa ended up in sixth place, four spots higher than City, who could afford to pay Barry far more than he currently earns. Villa confirmed on their website yesterday that Barry has started talks with City, but did not disclose further details. Barry has been again linked with Premier League runnerup Liverpool, as well as Arsenal.

Ibra wants out of Inter The possible departure of star Zlatan Ibrahimovic keeps worrying Inter Milan fans after his agent said that the Swede is open to offers from big clubs. Italian media yesterday quoted agent Mino Raiola as saying that the Italian champions own the 27-year-old Swede and their president Massimo Moratti is the only one who could sell him. “Zlatan never said he is uncomfortable in

Milan,” Raiola told Radio Kiss Kiss. “But it depends on a possible offer. Then he’ll decide. “But at the moment there are no offers. If there should be one [Inter] will have to consider its advantages.” As Inter celebrated a fourth straight Serie A title and he was crowned league top scorer on 25 goals, Ibrahimovic said he was not sure to begin a fourth season with the blueblacks.

World No 2 Mickelson gets good news, plans to return to golf in time for US Open Phil Mickelson plans a brief return to the PGA Tour in time for the US Open. The world’s No 2 player suspended his schedule indefinitely upon announcing two weeks ago that his wife, Amy, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Recent tests have given them hope the cancer has been caught early, with more tests over the next month. Mickelson intends to return

next week at the St Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee, then play the following week in the US Open at Bethpage Black, according to a person informed of the plans. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Mickelson had not announced his decision. “We heard there was a possibility he would play,” St Jude Championship spokesman Phil Cannon.

Phil Mickelson with his wife Amy Mickelson, who has cancer.

“That would be great.” Mickelson is a sentimental favourite at every US Open, where at age 38 he already has tied the record for most runner-up finishes with four. He is especially popular in New York, and his presence at Bethpage Black figured to bring an emotional and raucous response. He has never finished worse than fourth in his four US Opens held in New York.

Mickelson first thought surgery for his 37-year-old wife could happen as early as a few weeks since the announcement, but that has been pushed back for another month. Her treatment and recovery will dictate whether he plays in the British Open, or how much he plays at all the rest of the summer. Mickelson already has won twice this year.

ugby League in Australia is convulsing from the damaging fallout of a calamitous season headlined by group sex, drugs, racism, drunkenness and violence towards women. This year’s National Rugby League competition has lurched from one public relations disaster to another with those in charge pre-occupied with crisis-managing the game’s ills. Sponsors have backed off, some major benefactors are threatening to walk away and NRL chief executive David Gallop has warned players they will be dealt with severely if they continue to misbehave and risk the game’s future. But still the problems mount in a season from hell. The NRL has been badly exposed with two of its frontmen used for the television promotion of the 2009 season – Brett Stewart and Matthew Johns – tarnished by sex scandals. Stewart, the dashing Manly Sea Eagles’ Test fullback, faces sexual assault charges involving a 17-year-old girl after a boozy season club launch. Johns, a former Test star and popular pundit, was stood down by Channel Nine after an investigative television programme last month aired claims about group sex involving Cronulla Sharks players in New Zealand seven years ago. The unidentified woman named Johns in the programme

The programme also documented sexual assault claims involving other NRL footballers, with another unidentified woman saying she was afraid to press charges. “There is no way I’m going up against him, the football team, the NRL, their fans. I’m not going to take that on,” she said. The very future of the Cronulla Sharks club in Sydney’s south is also under threat, not only from the explosive sex revelations, but also a combination of crippling debts, sponsor pullouts and

player behavioural issues. Meanwhile, former international Reni Maitua was stood down by the Sharks after testing positive for an anabolic

agent and club captain Paul Gallen was fined by the NRL over allegations that he made a racial slur against a Tongan opponent. The club also sacked Greg Bird earlier this year in relation to a glassing assault conviction involving his girlfriend. And to add further to the NRL’s misery, Melbourne Storm pair, Cooper Cronk and Brett Finch, were both fined for urinating in public, not long after Sydney Roosters Test forward Willie Mason was photographed urinating outside a Sydney hotel. The latest incidents continue Gallop’s firefighting efforts on behalf of his embattled organisation.

osts Federbrau showed no mercy to Iran’s Saipa, crushing them in a lop-sided three-set battle to register their second successive win in the Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship at the Nakhon Pathom Sport Centre Gymnasium yesterday. The Thai side, who haven’t won the annual tournament since its inception in 1999, fielded their established stars spearheaded by powerful attacker Onuma Sittirak, who led the team with 13 points from 37 attempts. After conceding the first set 25-14, Saipa, powered by Brazilian Tatiana Alves Dos Santos and Turkish-born setter Tugce Celik, regained their composure to put up a fight against the Thais. But their best efforts were absorbed by Federbrau, who thrive on solid defence and exceptional spiking. The Thai team took the second and third sets 25-14 25-15. “I’m happy with the victory. The first line-up played up to my expectations, while the substitutes need some improvement,” Thai head coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai said. Elsewhere, North Korea’s Sobaeksu gunned down Uzbekistan’s Skif 25-13 25-15 25-8, while Vietnam’s Sport Centre outclassed Indonesia’s Petrokimia Gresik 25-19 25-9 25-15.

BANGKOK

THESPORT French tennis fans will face a tough choice when Roger Federer takes on Gael Monfils in the French Open quarter-finals today. On the one hand they have the lone remaining home hope to finally put an end to 26 years of French frustration at Roland Garros since Yannick Noah won in 1983. But on the other they have the most popular player in the game who needs just a win in Paris on Sunday to go down in history as the greatest player of all time. “I hope they’re going to support me. I’m French. We’re in France,” said Monfils who destroyed Andy Roddick in straight sets to make it through to the last eight for the second year in a row. “The French crowd is with me, but they love Federer. I hope they’ll support me more because I’m French. I hope they support me.” Monfils is only 22, but he is already a master at stirring up emotions when on the court. Against Roddick he went through his entire gambit of screams, arm-waving and leaps to whip the fans into a frenzy much to Roddick’s disgust. Attempting the same thing against Federer would likely be fatal such is the respect the Swiss star is held in Paris. That was evident yet again in his thrilling five-sets win over Germany’s Tommy Haas in the fourth round on Monday. The crowd were shocked into near silence as the 27-year-old from Basel, who was taught by French coaches and who speaks near fluent French, fell two sets to love down against Germany’s Tommy Haas. They then roared their approval as he saved a break point and then dug himself out of the hole he was in to keep his Roland Garros dream alive. – A F P
