Traditional folk music entertainers such as mor lam (Northeastern) bands, above, and likay (opera-like drama) performers, right, are among cultural businesses facing a rough ride in the economic downturn and political turmoil.

he ongoing economic gloom is spelling doom for the country’s mor lam bands. Unable to find enough bookings, one by one the traditional performers are going out of business. “During the Songkran holiday, we got just one job,” Surachai An-arn, manager of the Sor Thong Sa band, revealed yesterday.

tween Bt60,000 and Bt70,000 for his 85 dancers and singers. Mid-April’s Songkran Festival used to be the peak season for mor lam (folk music from the Northeast): “In other years, we’ve had nine or 10 jobs during the festival,” said Surachai, whose Sor Thong Sa band is based in Maha Sarakham’s Borabue district. Tuanthong Parnwong, manager of Nuparn Wisessilp, said bookings had dropped dramatically for his band. “We have only four, maybe five, next month,” said a dejected Tuanthong.

Based in Khon Kaen, business is quiet these days for the once much sought-after musicians.

Culture minister’s concern Culture Minister Teera Slukpetch yesterday acknowledged that artists and cultural operators were all having a hard time. Other folk arts feeling the pinch include likay (opera-like Thai drama), lam tad music from central Thailand and nora, a traditional dance of the South. “Bookings are down across the board,” said Teera, before bringing some cheer with news that the government

would be stepping in with financial aid for the entertainment industry. Also suffering sluggish business were art shops and galleries as well as big theatres like Bangkok’s Siam Niramit and Pattaya’s Thai Alangkarn.

Theatres deserted Thai Alangkarn theatre managing director Suttikorn Jearpaitoon says audience numbers for their extravagant cultural shows have dropped by about 80 per cent. Suttikorn reckons the political protests – both yellowshirted and red-shirted – have scared off foreign tourists.

“To survive, we have resorted to cost-cutting. We have also offered our stage for other events,” Suttikorn adds. In Bangkok, River City Shopping Complex has seen foreign-visitor numbers drop by half. “The global economic crisis has reduced the number of tourists from Europe and United States,” says Chonchai Tongpaitoon, River City’s marketing manager. “But Chinese tourists are staying away because of Thailand’s political problems.” River City is a famous for its vast range of art objects, crafts, antiques and other cultural items.

Snoop Dogg: I didn’t hit man Snoop Dogg told jurors on Monday that he did not hit a man suing him for millions of dollars with a brass-knuckle microphone during a melee at one of his 2005 concerts. The rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, took the stand for nearly two hours and denied that he hit Richard Monroe Jr during the show near Seattle. Snoop Dogg said he went back to his tour bus immediately after Monroe jumped on stage and was tackled by security. Snoop Dogg described the people who were on stage during a melee in which Monroe claims he was seriously injured. He identified several people near the struggle as being affiliated with The Game, a fellow rapper who had toured with Snoop Dogg. Monroe sued in 2006, claiming he was seriously injured after Snoop Dogg and members of his entourage and security detail struck him and poured alcohol on him. He sued for $22 million (Bt780 million). – A P

Apple sued for stifling iPod tricks Firm tries to stop OdioWorks helping owners of iPhones, iPods download from sources other than iTunes A F P , San Francisco

nternet-rights champions accused Apple of stifling free speech by bullying OdioWorks into ending online sharing of ways to get iPods to work with music websites other than iTunes. Attorneys from non-profit Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) teamed up with OdioWorks lawyers to file a lawsuit against Californiabased Apple in a US federal court. At the heart of the issue is the BluWiki website that details ways to get Apple’s popu-

lar iPhones and iPod MP3 players to synchronise music and video files with media at services such as Songbird, Banshee, Rockbox, and Winamp.

Free to modify content BluWiki operates as a “public service” with visitors able to freely edit or modify content on web pages in wikistyle collaborative efforts, according to OdioWorks, which owns the website. “Hobbyists” at BluWiki shared insights about reverseengineering Apple software

and making it possible for iPod and iPhone owners to “manage their media with whatever program they chose”, the lawsuit states. BluWiki terminated the forum late last year after Apple attorneys threatened to sue OdioWorks for spreading word of how to circumvent its digital-rights management technology. Apple zealously guards iTunes’ status as an exclusive content delivery and management tool for iPod and iPhone hardware. “Apple’s legal threats against BluWiki are about censorship, not about protecting their legitimate copyright interests,” said EFF senior staff attorney Fred von Lohmann.

Within hours of a state Supreme Court legalising gay marriage, several same-sex couples had exchanged vows and at least 82 couples had lined up to do so. Still, the issue is far from settled. The Iowa Family Policy Centre, which opposes samesex marriage, wants the state to begin the process of amending Iowa’s constitution to overturn the court decision. – AP

Chinese graduate who was brutally murdered with his girlfriend in Britain last year was an Internet betting fraudster who had access to thousands of pounds worth of cash, a court heard on Monday. Zhen Xing Yang and his girlfriend Xi Zhou, both 25, had £233,690 (Bt12 million) pass through their bank accounts, but there was no sign of the cash when their bodies were found, Newcastle Crown Court heard. Guang Hui Cao, 30, denies murdering the couple after robbing them, perhaps with others, last August. Xi Zhou, known as Cici, and Yang, also called Kevin, had mobile phones and a laptop computer taken from their ground floor flat. The level of violence used was not “even remotely necessary” to take those items, according to prosecution lawyer Robert Smith. The court heard that Yang made a living from selling false educational certificates and from his involvement in a “fraudulent” Internet-betting scam. His declared annual income was just £3,000, while his girlfriend earned £14,000 a year as a waitress, but police found that hundreds of thousands of pounds passed through their bank ac-

Yet when officers searched the murder scene, they found just £10. After the murders, Cao changed his clothes and stole three mobile phones and a laptop, the court heard. The phones were found dumped nearby and, when examined, revealed contact between him and the couple. Cao was arrested and Yang’s blood was found on his glasses. More blood was found on his watch, the jury heard.

Cooper, a Merrill Lynch worker in Jersey City, told the local NBC News channel. “Every-body was screaming and we all ran downstairs. I’m devastated ... Everybody was running, we didn’t know why we were running. We just knew it was a plane, there we go, 9/11 again.” The 747 is known by the call sign Air Force One when the president is aboard. The director of the White House’s military office acknowledged approving the flight and apologised. “While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption,” Louis Caldera said. ‘I apologise and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused,” he said.

Conficker worm adds a new weapon: spam The giant Conficker computer worm, once feared as an outof-control Internet doomsday machine, seems to have settled – for now – on trying to make money in very predictable ways. Researchers from Cisco Systems say some of the up to 12 million personal computers infected by Conficker are being used to send about 10,000 to 20,000 spam e-mails a day per computer, far less than they actually are capable of. Lower volumes help evade detection. Some Conficker-infected machines have started selling fake antivirus software, using annoying pop-up ads to warn of infections that only the criminals can clean up for a fee, but of course never do. Cisco’s chief security researcher, Patrick Peterson, says researchers are convinced “this is the two-pronged method [the criminals] are going to use to make a fortune” off the infected machines. – A P

hailand’s popular songsfor-life band Carabao joins some of the Kingdom’s leading luk thung (country folk) artists and three “Academy Fantasia” contestants onstage on May 31 for what promises to be a sellout show. The show “3 Cha Samakkhee: Luk Thung Fantasia” was originally scheduled for this coming Saturday, but was postponed due to the political situation. “This concert marks Carabao’s 28th anniversary,” says Yuenyong “Ad” Ophakul, the band’s frontman. “We’ll be aiming, as usual, to have everyone up and dancing to the rhythm of three chas, which is Carabao’s symbol and as Thai as the tuk-tuk and the elephant. “In addition, we’ll be urging love and unity among Thai

people, who are suffering from both an economic meltdown and political conflict. We want them to spend an evening relaxing and enjoying the music and culture.”

Among the luk thung singers taking part are Nipaporn “Kratae” Panguan, Ajareeya “Lew” Phrompruek and Saomad Megadance.

Carabao Fantasia They’ll be performing alongside stars of the cable-TV reality talent series “Academy Fantasia” – Kiatkamol “Tui” Latha,

Also taking to the stage will be Oy Krathon, Siphueak Khon Dan Kwien, Pongsit “Poo” Khamphi and Tik Shiro. “The three ‘Fantasia’ singers will sing Carabao’s classic hits, and some of our songs are also being rearranged for the luk thung singers,” says Ad.

XTRA LONGHORN RODEO >> Carabao’s concert “3 Cha Samakkhee: Luk Thung Fantasia” takes place at 7pm on May 31 at Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani. >> Tickets are Bt500 to Bt2,000 at Thaiticketmajor. >> For refunds from the original show, call (02) 262 3456 before Saturday.

Among the luk thung singers taking part in the concert will be Nipaporn ‘Kratae’ Panguan and Ajareeya ‘Lew’ Phrompruek.

Fans can expect to hear Carabao tunes dating back to the early days, plus such new songs as “Made in Thailand ’09”, “Phuea Cheewit Tid Lor” and “Thalay Arom” from their latest album, “Hoh”. “The album title is taken from the name of food from the North, which was originally just a mixture of leftovers,” Ad explains. “This album’s a bit like that: a melting pot of music and feeling.”

Simple, sizzling and savoury THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

T

he happy result of a marriage between a pile of onions and four hours to kill is a savoury, caramelised treat that’s a deep mahogany reddish-brown with a marmaladelike consistency. There is sweetness, yes, but there is so much else, a powerful, mouth-filling delicious-

ness that can’t be described. And the texture is buttery enough that they actually can be used as a fat replacement. There are so many things you can do with caramelised onions. Spread them on toast, use them as a pizza topping with goat cheese and black olives, or use them as a flavouring base. Stir them into a bowl of

cooked grain and add just a little sauteed bitter greens for a great meal. Smear a bit on a warm tortilla. They’re also terrific stirred into pasta sauces, stews or a pot of beans. Caramelising onions is not risk-free. The main problem is that caramelising can come awfully close to burning, and once you’ve scorched the onions there’s no way to get rid of that bitter flavour. To avoid this, cook the onions in the heaviest pot you have, over the lowest heat possible for much of the time, stirring as often as you can. That should be at least every 15 to 20 minutes for most of the cooking, shortening to five to 10 minutes when you get down to the end stages. The onions wilt and shrink dramatically during cooking. Sprinkle them with a little salt to help draw out the moisture and just enough oil to keep them from sticking. Cover the pot and place it over mediumlow heat.

Simple pleasures are often best – witness the exciting potential of savoury

caramelised onions. After filling a bowl

nearly to the top with raw onions, let them sit for 45 minutes.

Shot-putter Chatchawal Polyeam with his gold medal yesterday.

SHOT OF THE DAY Chatchawal steals the show with a record performance By Preechachan Wiriyanupappong DAILY XPRESS, Pathum Thani

S

hot-putter Chatchawal Polyeam set the Thammasat Rangsit Main Stadium alight with a recordshattering performance on the penultimate day of the Thailand Open Track and Field Championships yesterday. Indonesian Fernando Lumain and local track queen Nongnuch Sanrat also stamped their dominance, emerging as the fastest man and woman of the championships. Lumain stormed home first in 10.65 seconds in the men’s 100m, with the Royal Thai Navy’s Apinan Sukapai and Royal Thai Air Force’s Panom Pudsa finishing second and third in 10.69 and 10.75 respectively. Thai sprinters made it a one-two-three finish in the women’s event. Nongnuch, silver medallist in the Nakhon

Ratchasima SEA Games, crossed the finish line first in 11.62 seconds, with Tussaporn Wannakij and Jintara Siangdee in second and third in 11.87 and 11.94 respectively. In ideal weather conditions, the SEA Games gold medallist Chatchawal broke his national record of 18.03m established here two years ago, and shattered his SEA Games mark of 17.43m set in Nakhon Ratchasima the same year. The 29-year-old Royal Thai Army man blew away his challengers, among them the SEA Games bronze medallist Eliezer Sunang from the Philippines, with a mighty heave that sent the orb soaring to 18.20m. “The credit for my success undoubtedly goes to Cung Yuzhun, who coached Chinese shot-putters at last year’s Beijing Olympics. He came here to help Thai athletes in their preparation for the Laos SEA Games. This is my personal best. If I don’t get any injuries during the December Games, I’m sure I can retain the crown,” said Chatchawal.

In the men’s hammer throw, SEA Games record-holder Arriel Ferrera of the Philippines sent a warning to his Southeast Asian counterparts that he remains their strongest rival as he claimed gold yesterday with a meet record of 56.70m. RTA’s Tantipong Kanchoo picked up silver and bettered his own top mark of 54.28m with a 56.39m effort. Sunisa Khao-iad of the Royal Thai Air Force jumped 3.50m in the pole vault, 20 centimetres below her fourthplace finish at the SEA Games in Nakhon Ratchasima two years ago. Taking the advantage of the withdrawal due to a shoulder injury by the Asian Games and Bangkok Universiade gold medallist Buoban Pamang, Saraswathy Sundaram threw a distance of 49.49m in the women’s javelin to hand India their first gold of the meet. Earlier, Burma’s Saw Marlar New captured the day’s first gold in the women’s 20km walk after crossing the finish line in one hour, 54 minutes, 53.01 seconds.

Eto’o tackles giant Janko to wear the Golden Boot

SITTING ON DEFENCE Vidic says Utd must shore up leaky back line against Arsenal AP, Manchester, England

nless Manchester United shore up their leaky defence against Arsenal, centre back Nemanja Vidic fears the club may be denied a second successive Champions League final. The three-time European champions host their English rivals in the first leg of their semifinal tonight, four days after a dramatic 5-2 victory over Tottenham when they overturned a 2-0 deficit in the second half. Before that match, United’s back four had looked to have regained their durability by keeping three straight clean sheets after leaking 12 goals in five matches. Vidic said that slump came as a result of Alex Ferguson’s need to rotate the squad amid a tough match schedule. “In the first half [against Tottenham] we didn’t defend very well,” Vidic said. “In the second half we came back much stronger, and that is how we need to play against Arsenal and any team we play against. It just happens – sometimes things go wrong. “We will try to fix the problems we have had in the last games, but we need to remember as well that we have changed many players. We have not played with a consistent team at the back... We have so many games that sometimes you have to change the team and sometimes you need time to adapt.”

From left, Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs trains with team-mates Nemanja Vidic, Park Ji-Sung and Carlos Tevez at the Carrington training ground. What encourages Vidic, though, is the five-goal surge that kept United top of the Premier League and boosted the strikers’ confidence ahead of their first European encounter with Arsenal. Ferguson has a tough decision about which strikers will start at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Dimitar Berbatov all scored in the 5-2 win, but second-half substitute Carlos Tevez was the architect of the comeback. “We have the first game at home so we need to do well, we need to score goals, we especially have to improve on what has not been good in the last few games,” Vidic said. “To not

HE’S A GREAT PLAYER AND HAS THE ABIILITY TO SCORE.HE IS BIG AND STRONG. Vidic on Adebayor concede a goal is very important, but we have players who

can score, players who believe in themselves.” The Serbia centre back said his main challenge tonight will be to contain striker Emmanuel Adebayor. “He’s a great player and has the ability to score,” Vidic said. “He is big and strong and in that respect you have to expect a hard game against such an opponent.” Arsenal head north to Old Trafford in bullish mood. “For me I am not scared of any team. I know what I have to do when I play,” Arsenal defender Kolo Toure said. “There is more pressure on United because they are the team to beat. “We are going there to do the best.”

Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o has grappled with many hardy foes during his career, but the Cameroonian hitman has probably never found himself in direct opposition with a player like Marc Janko. The 6ft 5in 25-year-old plays his club football for Austrian first division leaders Red Bull Salzburg, but rather than a wily centre-half or an indefatigable full-back, Janko is a striker. He also happens to be Eto’o’s nearest rival for the European Golden Boot, the award handed out each year for the top goalscorer in European football. The Austrian has scored an astonishing 35 goals in just 27 league games this season, firing his side to a seven-point lead at the league summit, but he says his focus is on the title, rather than individual honours. “We are on course for the league title and we therefore simply have to win,” he said. “My main aim is helping the club to the title and then I can think about the European golden boot and the Austrian goalscoring record (41).” Eto’o has scored 27 times this term, but the weighting system employed by award organisers the European Sport Magazine group (ESM) means that he leads Janko at the top of the continental scoring charts. Players who represent clubs in Europe’s top five leagues – England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France – are awarded two points per goal scored, but those who earn their corn in the continent’s weaker competitions are awarded either one or 1.5 points.

Shearer admits time running out for Magpies AFP, Newcastle, England

Newcastle United’s Michael Owen after missing a chance in the 0-0 draw with Portsmouth.

lan Shearer admitted time was running out for Newcastle in their bid to cling on to their place in the Premier League after the Magpies were denied victory by Portsmouth on Monday. A goalless draw left the Magpies three points adrift of fourth-from-bottom Hull with just four matches left to stave off relegation and a daunting trip to face title-chasing

Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. The trip to Liverpool is followed by home games against fellow relegation candidates Middlesbrough and then Fulham and a final day trip to Aston Villa and Shearer admitted: “We need to get a win. Time is running out, we know it. “We might get something at Anfield and then we have two home games we need to take six points from. I think it will go to

the final game of the season. “But we need a win to kickstart a bit of momentum.” The point edges Portsmouth closer to securing their own top flight status with Paul Hart’s side now seven points clear of the drop zone. The stakes involved in a match that Shearer had described as both a must-win encounter and the most important of his players’ careers, were reflected in the presence of all

three of the club’s leading strikers – Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins – in the starting line-up. That helped to ensure a buzzing atmosphere at the outset but the final whistle was to be greeted with a chorus of jeers from the home fans as Newcastle’s big guns failed to produce the moment of quality required, with Owen squandering a glorious chance just after the hour mark.

Tiger’s putting and swing not burning as bright these days, says Australian Ogilvy Tiger Woods is obsessed with

swing, said Ogilvy, who is ranked No 4. “I think, whether he has admitted it or not, he’s probably not quite as right as he wants to be,” Ogilvy said. Ogilvy made sure to praise Woods, who has thrived off of past comments from opposing players that have been perceived as overly critical. “Whatever Tiger does is right,” said Ogilvy. “It would be hard to find anything criti-

cal about the way Tiger goes about it.” At the Masters, Woods said he was “frustrated” with his play and only spoke briefly with the media before departing the course. Such frustration can work to Woods’s benefit, said Ogilvy, who won the 2006 US Open at New York’s Winged Foot Golf Club. “I think he needs a direction for his focus,” Ogilvy said. “For Tiger, that’s technique

and getting really into his golf swing. I don’t think he would be as good if he didn’t get that into technique. He just hasn’t made putts like he had before. I think he’ll be all right.” Woods will play in this week’s Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, as he seeks his second victory in five events. He won the tournament at the Quail Hollow Club in 2007 and finished third in 2004.

obe Bryant and Los Angeles Lakers finished off the Utah Jazz, but wasn’t the way they wanted to close them out. Bryant scored 31 points, Lamar Odom had 26 with 15 rebounds and the Lakers held off the feisty Jazz 107-96 yesterday to wrap up their Western Conference first-round playoff series four-games-to one. The victory was bittersweet after the Lakers nearly blew 20-point, fourth-quarter lead. “We played well offensively, we played spotty defence, but we didn’t close the door and I told them that,” said Lakers coach Phil Jackson.. “We couldn’t sustain the effort. We have to improve as we go forward.” The top-seeded Lakers will meet the winners of HoustonPortland in the conference semi-finals, with the Rockets holding a commanding 3-1 advantage. Spaniard Pau Gasol had 17 points with 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who beat the Jazz for the 12 consecutive time at Staples Centre. “To be able to beat Utah in five games, I think we’ll take that all the way,” Gasol said. “We’re happy about that. We’ll wait for our next opponent, because it’ll be extremely tough.” With Bryant and Odom scoring 16 points apiece, the Lakers built a 56-43 margin, that bal-

The lead grew to 93-73 with 8:33 remaining, and what looked to be a blowout became a ballgame as reserves Kyle Korver, Ronnie Price and Paul Millshap accounted for 29 of Utah’s 33 fourth-quarter points. Bryant voiced concern over the late collapse. “We have to give a better effort, running back on defence, not giving up easy baskets, we have to continue to hustle,” he said. Elsewhere it was Denver Nuggets 121, New Orleans Hornets 63. The Nuggets made it look too easy in the “Big Easy.”

Carmelo Anthony scored 26, Chauncey Billups had 17 before both sat out the final quarter, and the Nuggets humiliated the host Hornets to grab a commanding 3-1 lead in their Western Conference firstround play-off series. In another game, it was Atlanta Hawks 81, Miami Heat 71. The Hawks picked a perfect time to snap a 12-year play-off road slide. Zaza Pachulia had 12 points with 18 rebounds, and the Hawks took advantage of ailing Dwyane Wade to beat the Heat and square their Eastern Conference first-round play-off series at two-games apiece.

BANGKOK

THESPORT Kolo Toure believes the youthful current crop of Arsenal stars can emulate the battle-hardened class of 2006 and book their ticket to this season’s Champions League final. The Gunners face Manchester United in the first leg of their semifinal at Old Trafford on Wednesday with Toure the only survivor from the “Invincibles” squad that went through the 2003-04 Premier League campaign unbeaten. That squad, constructed around the French trio of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires, broke up after the 2006 Champions League final defeat by Barcelona but Toure believes the north London club is once again on the verge of something special. “True we lost Thierry Henry, but Emmanuel Adebayor is playing really well; we lost Robert Pires, but we have Samir Nasri,” the Ivory Coast defender said. “All those players have been replaced. The good thing about this team is we have a lot of young players who want to show they have the quality. “I remember that a team like Ajax – nobody was expecting them to win, but they won (in 1995) and had a really young team as well.” Arsenal will miss the creative edge provided by top-scorer Robin van Persie, who is ruled out by a groin injury, and cup-tied Russian playmaker Andrey Arshavin. But they will take heart from the fact that they have already beaten United this season (2-1 at the Emirates in November) and by the current form of captain Cesc Fabregas, who has been revelling in the role of a deeplying forward akin to that in which Steven Gerrard has thrived at Liverpool this season. Toure is confident the Spaniard’s guile, combined with the presence of Adebayor and the pace of Theo Walcott, will pose the holders problems. – A F P
