fter a whole night in the studio, I drove home on Monday morning. The empty streets told me it was school vacation time again. I remember the feeling – when exams ended and summer started, when all problems were cleared, including your grades, when we were ready to start anew. It would be nice if we adults could have our “life’s summer vacation”, when all problems are like school grades, and we can forget all the bad things and start anew.

Angels on WARPATH Interviews canned as author of soap on flight attendants finds herself in legal trouble By Mayuree Sukyingcharoenwong DAILY XPRESS
T
he “War of Angels” ended last week as far as television audiences are concerned. But there is no sign of peace for the players in real life. Channel 3 this week censored two interviews relating to controversial novel “Songkram Nang Fah” (“War of Angels”). The reason? It doesn’t want to be part of a legal fight. The nationwide audience of “Jub Khao Khui” talk show were disappointed on Monday night when an interview with Royreudee Kenny, main character and author of the soap opera, was postponed indefinitely.
The show’s host, Sorrayuth Suthassanachinda, told his fans the following day that the channel’s censorship panel did not allow the recorded interview to be aired for legal reasons. The panel said Royreudee was involved in a legal battle.
Legal tussle Last week, police arrested Royreudee, 52, accusing her of posting pictures of Patchara Silapapreecha, a Thai Airways cabin attendant, on the Internet. The pictures led many to believe that Patchara was the real-life bad character, Cherry, of the soap opera. The channel was worried that if it aired the interview, it could be dragged into legal
problems as Royreudee had named a “third party” in the interview, Sorrayuth said. On Tuesday night, Channel 3 again did not allow talk show “At Ten” to telecast the interiew with Royreudee’s exhusband, Ning, and his first wife, Orn, their daughter, Norn, and Ning’s mistress, Patchara. The show’s PR officer, Narissara Wattakee, said the channel was concerned about a legal tussle. She said the interview would not be telecast until the channel gave the green light. In promos of Sorrayuth’s talk show last week, Royreudee was excerpted as saying she was not as good a woman in real life as shown in
the TV soap. She had married and divorced several times in real life.
Dramatic past Royreudee divorced Ning in 1996, keeping custody of their two children. He married Patchara two years ago and the couple have a year-old child. The soap opera bubbled into controversy on January 21 when Thai Airways flight attendants urged the government to axe the prime-time drama because it showed stewardesses wearing short skirts and fighting while in uniform. Royreudee, using the penname “Airkee”, wrote about her miserable love life and
posted it on Pantip.com, which became an instant hit. In March 2007, it was published as a Bt135-novel titled “Cheewit Rantod – Ruangjing Phan Comp” (“The Melancholic Life – A True Story from the Computer”). The 200-page bestseller, which is mostly based on Royreudee’s life, tells the story of an innocent 21-year-old stewardess named Rin, or Royreudee in real life, who falls in love with Ning, a tall and handsome pilot. Four years later Ning marries Rin because of an unplanned pregnancy. An Indian firm recently approached Royreudee, asking for a deal to turn the novel into an Indian soap opera.

gang of thieves in the northeastern province of Kalasin’s Yang Talad district poisoned dogs and sedated victims before stealing barrels of rice worth nearly Bt100,000.
Kalasin police chief Police Maj-General Pisan Worathepnitinant has instructed 23 police stations to beef up security and set up local networks to watch out for suspicious strangers. Tambon Bua Ban Adminis-
trative Organisation president Urit Phu-obe led a group of villagers who had suffered from similar robberies to file a complaint yesterday morning. They warned others to be careful of such criminals because police had not been able to catch them so far. Urit said there were many rice thefts last week in Tambon Bua Ban affecting ten
poor farming families. Each family had at least 100 barrels of rice worth about Bt10,000 stolen. Urit suspected the gang of five or six thieves were targeting families who lived on isolated farms. He said they had also poisoned dogs and sedated the families before making off with the rice.

This should reduce costs and eliminate the need for patients to travel overseas to see experts. “Patients can be treated anywhere and any time. They can have an operation even if they live a long way from the surgeon,” says the Japanese developer of the technique, Professor Makoto Hashizume. The surgeon and robot are connected via a broadband network transferring real-time images and sound. Surgeons use a computer console, joystick and wear three-dimension glasses to move the robotic arms. “It will be possible for a doctor in Japan to operate on a patient in Bangkok,” he says. ne of the top hotels in northern Thailand has offered to help take elephants off the streets of Bangkok. The Anantara Resort in the Golden Triangle has set up a foundation to rent jumbos and pay for their food at a camp in the far North. The five-star hotel, part of Bill Heinecke’s Minor Group, already has about two dozen tuskers at a camp adjacent to the resort in Chiang Rai. Half of the animals are used for tourist treks or an elephant polo event – due to be held at the end of the month, while the other dozen just live on the 600-rai block. The hotel’s bosses say they’re happy to take more. But they need help from local
villagers: they want to rent more land. Englishman John Roberts, the resort’s resident director of elephants, explained the plan to the press on Tuesday night. Roberts, 34, said the bosses at Anantara had been trying to find an answer to the domestic elephant problem.
Offer to rent elephants He said the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, registered here three years ago, offered to rent jumbos from mahouts for Bt15,000 a month to get them off the streets. “If you buy an elephant you do no good at all. So what we try to do is rent them,” said Roberts, who has worked in Chiang Rai for five years. “We cover all their costs and give

The two males with her were her sex friends. She rapidly became the leading light in the local bad crowd, throwing her money around, buying bottles of whisky and drugs every night and most nights getting so drunk and sick that it needed both her sex friends to carry her back inside... She boasts of being an ex bar girl and has been persuading local girls to do the same. They look at her money and flash car and are impressed... Now my dilemma starts. He tells me they married in 2002, but she missed her Thai friends too much to live in Korea with him. After the first two days and from further conversations with him he obviously knew something was wrong. He seemed uncomfortable with her group and would often walk away alone. Several times he took her away on trips for the day. Perhaps he guessed a few things from the fact that I and my girlfriend do not mix with his wife’s crowd. WHEN PENT-UP FRUSTRATIONS SUDDENLY ERUPT Troubled individuals should be allowed access to treatment before lives are lost through senseless attacks
T
he suspect wanted for the stone-throwing attack that killed a 13-year-old boy last Sunday in Phetchaburi reportedly committed suicide out of remorse for his crime. But such acts in which motorists are randomly selected for senseless attacks, will continue to pose a danger to public safety. The Phetchaburi incident may be the latest of several stone-throwing attacks recorded by police over the past few years. Before that two people had been killed and another seriously injured in similar assaults while they were travelling down highways at high speed in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Samut Songkhram and Ayutthaya provinces. These became prominent cases because someone was killed or sustained serious injuries and therefore were widely reported. There were other incidents that have gone unreported simply because, fortunately, no one was hurt by the rock-hurling vandals.
It is usually difficult to investigate such incidents because they usually take place at night in isolated spots along inter-provincial highways. By the time the ill-fated motorists realised what happened, it was usually too late to do anything, let alone try to identify suspected attackers or locate the exact place from which a rock was hurled. Some of the stone throwers arrested by police turned out to be disturbed young individuals who may or may not have any clear motivation for hurling stones at oncoming vehicles. Most of them told police they did not mean to kill or seriously hurt anyone when they did what they did. Be that as it may, people convicted ofviolent acts that kill or injure others must be punished to the full extent of the law. Such anti-social behaviour of troubled individuals is difficult to detect among the general population. Most people have problems which they learn to cope with on a daily basis, but some never learn how to handle their anger or frustration, and sometimes pent-up feelings erupt in unexpected ways. In this society, most people, including those who are under severe stress or even mentally ill, do not seek professional help largely because of the social taboo. This is too bad. People should be given access to psychiatrists and medical services before things get out of hand. Most important of all, parents of youngsters with antisocial tendencies must teach their children to think about possible serious consequences of their actions.

As physics professor Alan Cromer has brutally and elegantly written, “the human mind wasn’t designed to study physics”, and of course mathematics is the language of physics. “Design” here does not indicate an intelligent designer, which would suggest a creator with a maths phobia. Rather it indicates evolutionary processes by which the

human brain and mind have come to be what they are.
Maths versus survival During the approximately two million years that it took for our Homo forebears to
progress from habilis to sapiens, they had little use for mathematical abilities. Their sapientia seems to have been more suited in a Darwinian sense to the immediate demands of their survival, such as eating, mating and avoiding premature death. Whether for good or ill, as time may tell, our situations have changed much in the last few thousand years. Science and mathematics have the most exacting demands for such thinking, but there are many other disciplines that require it. Fortunately, however, the mind can be altered; the brain can learn to function in different ways.
Lessons on thinking The ancient Greeks discovered, maths is a fine schoolmaster for that purpose. In most academic disciplines, what you learn to think about is not as important as how you learn to think. So let us not hear that high-school algebra is a waste of time because it does not train students for the job market. It teaches the mind how to think. In some cases it might even teach it to think about the universe, which is a very nice way to spend one’s life. orway is to look into the feasibility of banning the use of plastic bags, according to Environment and International Development Minister Erik Solheim. “In China they ban plastic bags, Ireland has introduced a fee on bags and in Australia there are discussions about a
ban,” Solheim was quoted as saying in an interview with public broadcaster NRK on Sunday. Possible alternatives to plastic bags included cloth or net bags, Solheim said. Federation of Norwegian Commercial and Service Enterprises (HSH) spokes-
man Jarle Hammerstad appeared more cautious, saying the federation wanted a better case for introducing a possible ban and that consumers should be consulted. “Plastic bags have many uses in a normal household,” Hammerstad said, adding
that the minister should focus on recycling or introducing environmentally friendly bags. Solheim said people were used to adapting to new technology like mobile phones and ought to be able to cope with not using plastic bags.

G
eneticists have identified a super gene which causes breast cancer to metastasise, the deadly process by which the disease spreads, according to a study released yesterday. Described by the United States researchers as a “master regulator”, the SATB1 gene alters the behaviour of at least 1,000 other genes in tumour cells, said the study, published in the British journal Nature. When over-activated it
makes cancer cells proliferate, and when neutralised the gene stops cells from dividing and migrating, the study said. “SATB1 will be a remarkable target for cancer therapy,” lead scientist Termumi KohwiShigematsu of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, said. The findings could not only pave the way to diagnostic tools, she said, but also to drugs that prevent or treat metastasis in breast cancer.
Less than 10 per cent of women with metastatic breast cancer survive beyond a decade, and just over a quarter make it past five years. SATB1’s normal role in organising other genes – especially related to T-cells that play a critical role in the immune system – is well known. A drug that blocks the gene throughout the body would compromise its normal and critical role in activating the immune system.

Draw blood to check depression A F P , Chicago
A
simple blood test may be enough to diagnose depression and determine whether antidepressant medication is working, researchers said on Tuesday. Scientists have identified a protein in the brain that serves as a biomarker for depression. “This test could serve to predict the efficacy of antidepressant therapy quickly, within four to five days, sparing patients the agony of waiting to find out if they are on the correct therapeutic regimen,” Mark Rasenick of the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Medicine, said. Rasenick and his colleages studied the brains of 16 clinically depressed people who committed suicide and compared them to the brains of cadavers with no history of psychiatric disorders. They found that a larger proportion of the key signalling protein Gs alpha was trapped in a part of the brain cells called lipid rafts, confirming earlier studies in rats and brain cell cultures. When this protein becomes
trapped its ability to activate neurotransmitters is reduced. “Antidepressants help to move the Gs alpha out of these rafts and facilitate the action of certain neurotransmitters,” Rasenick said. “The test that could be developed for all this is a very simple one that could be done in a clinical laboratory,” he said.

rather than treating diseases, chiropracty "brings better communication between different parts of the body". When the spine's vertebrae slip from their normal position, whether from a car crash, poor posture, or some other reason, the increased pressure on the spinal nerves that results interferes with the nervous communication between body and brain. A chiropractor manipulates the joints to realign the bones, which takes pressure off nerves and eases symptoms of pain and numbness. Nakaya wasn't always a chiropractor. A keen kick-boxer in his native Japan, he arrived in Thailand in the '80s, keen to further his education at muay thai camps around the country. But after suffering an injury to his lower back that couldn't be cured by conventional medicine, he decided to look into chiropracty. His interest led him to a course at Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los
Angeles and after graduating he returned to set up his own practice in Thailand. To date, he's one of only 18 chiropractors who have met the standards demanded by the Ministry of Health and earned a medical licence. This means that you're still most likely to be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon if you visit the doctor with bad back or neck pain. But surgery, says Nakaya, should only be considered as a last resort.

Dear Dr Mike, I get lots of spam e-mail about penis enlargement everything from herbs and pills to machines and weights. Do any of these things work? I want to be bigger and would appreciate your thoughts. Dick Little in Bangkok Dear Dick, There are no herbs, pills, creams or other substances that can enlarge your penis. Surgery and hanging - or stretching - are another story. Stretching with weights has been used around the world for centuries and is still prescribed by many surgeons after phalloplasty - penile en-
largement surgery. It may actually work, but is questionable, very time-consuming and can have complications like trauma, numbness or impotence. Phalloplasty is actually two procedures - lengthening and thickening. Since a large portion of your penis is internal, cutting the suspending ligament can make more of it visible. The gain is not much, usually about 2.5 centimetres, and even less when erect. The more impressive gains are in thickening, which involves more dangerous and controversial surgery: The penis is de-gloved and some material - silicone, harvested ca-
daver skin, fat - placed under the skin. Most fillers can be rejected, or they can be absorbed unevenly. Patients' reactions vary from satisfied to horrified. A lot depends on the skill and experience of your surgeon and how well you follow directions. Since this is not a generally accepted procedure, there's no reliable way to find a competent surgeon. Erection size varies among ethnic groups and ranges from 10 to 15cm. Most surgeries are done on normal-size patients. I don't recommend it unless you're below 10cm. The surgery is expensive, painful and risky.

Today’s Birthday: Use common sense to finish what you start and do it well. Emotional matters will test your patience and lead you offcourse if you let them. Keep things in perspective. A conservative approach to love and business will help you keep your life in order. Aries (March 21-April 19)
You have to be comfortable with what you are doing and, if you haven’t cleared up the past, it may be difficult to move forward. Do what needs to be done and don’t look back. You will feel so much better once you clear up old, incomplete matters.
Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Stop sitting still when there is so much to do. Travel or at least look into possible destinations that will help you career-wise. You can’t keep spinning your wheels hoping that something will drop in your lap. Take the initiative. Gemini (May 21-June 21)
You may feel like shaking things up today but it’s best to let things unfold naturally. Your anxiety will lead to trouble, so keep busy with things that can benefit you financially and professionally. Cancer (June 22-July 22)
Information is heading your way regarding a project you want to pursue. An experienced individual may have more wisdom than you think, so keep an open mind and listen. Don’t let a change of plans throw you off-balance.
DIFFICULTY RATING ★★★★★
Leo (July 23-August 22)
Don’t waste time on trivial matters. It’s what you do that counts, not what you say you will do. A partnership is apparent but be careful that the person in question has as much to contribute as you do. Get everything in writing.
CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY
Virgo (August 23-Sept 22)
Go big or go home should be your motto today if you want to make a difference. Changes to your position or status will be made possible by someone with clout. Don’t miss out because you are too busy taking care of other people’s problems. Libra (Sept 23-Oct 22)
Take off on an adventure or try something different but, most of all, get out and mingle with people you find interesting. You will have a way with words that will captivate but don’t exaggerate. Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21)
A change of plans will work to your advantage. You can make a crucial move or travel to a destination that will help provide you with the information and contacts you need to get ahead. Stop worrying and start doing. Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21)
You won’t be emotionally grounded today so think before you do or say something you might regret. Making a change to spite someone will not be to your advantage. Your motives may be heading in the wrong direction. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19)
Dana Delaney Singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka is 69. Actor William H Macy is 58. Actress Glenne Headly is 53. Actress Dana Delaney is 52. Bassist Adam Clayton of U2 is 48. Actress Tracy Wells (“Mr. Belvedere”) is 37. Actress Dana Delaney is 37. Rapper Common is 36. Rapper Khujo of Goodie Mob is 36. Singer Glenn Lewis is 33. Actor Danny Masterson is 32.
Someone from your past will have gained enough experience to help you finish something you have been struggling to finish. An emotional chord will be struck when a comment made by someone you least expect is brutally honest. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18)
IUse your imagination and make a few changes at home that will make your living quarters more functional. You can discuss matters that concern your personal life with whoever is most likely to influence your future. Be nice but clear about your needs. Pisces (Feb 19-March 20)
Refuse to become upset by what others do or say. Criticism can be a good thing if you take it in the spirit it is meant. Don’t rule out that you might need to make a few changes. This is no time to be stubborn.

Here’s the snag with snacks
Just what is a snack? A piece of fruit? I like pineapple, you prefer guava. Everyone has his and her own taste and idea on this. Fruit is good for you. Your mother said so! Then again, what about a quick visit to the 7-Eleven? Now, these are palaces of the “snack”, so much so that they really should be called “snackarieas” (my own word). Look at all that choice – lots of crunchy, crispy, snacky things. But maybe a bowl of noodles would go down well, especially with the right balance of condiments. Maybe you like just that bit more sugar to balance the dried chilli. In truth, a plate of fried rice is only a large snack, especially fried rice with crocodile, which is your favourite. (Well, I have a good imagination.) Or what about pad thai? You know you have that weakness for the ground peanuts. Come to think of it, it is getting close to lunchtime, sort of. How about tom yum with rice and some veggies as extra? Hold it, we were only talking about a snack! Educate your stomach – stick with the piece of fruit. Your wallet, your waistline and your health would prefer it. Oh yes, and mother was right. The writer is the director of Mentor International. Visit www.Mentor.ac.

A team of Thammasat political-science students stages a coup in a marketing competition By Suwicha Chanitnun D A I LY X P R E S S
C
uriosity got an alert ping when four Thammasat University political-science students introduced themselves as the winning team in the Central Group’s Junior Marketeer Project. Political-science students scoring a marketing coup? Yes, the quartet known as The Dome – Jomwang Ninlapun, Panatda Soontornnon, Pichapa Wiroonchaichot and Napaschon Sripan – beat 160 other teams from across the country. Almost all of their rivals were students majoring in marketing, commerce or accountancy.
“For me, it reflects the belief that everyone can do the things they like and achieve success if they’re just willing to try,” says Jomwang, the Dome’s captain. “The competition is open to all third- and fourth-year students in any field,” adds Napaschon, “So we had the chance to prove our potential.” The team members are all interested in marketing and had attended classes as a minor. Last year they took third place in a business-plan competition. This year’s Junior Marketeer Project required participants to devise a marketing plan to promote Baskin
Robbins ice cream. The Dome members – all focused primarily on politics – had their work cut out for them, and it took a lot of time. “Managing our time was the first thing we had to do,” says Panatda. “If we do activities outside the classroom such as this competition, we can’t ignore our studies.” The team members won a trophy from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and scholarships worth Bt300,000. Upon graduation they’ll be able to start working fulltime in the marketing department at Baskin Robbin, which is already implementing their marketing plan.

THE SPORT briefly Roddick set to skip Olympics for ATP Tour Andy Roddick will skip the Beijing Olympics in August to defend his crown at the Washington Classic two weeks before the US Open. Roddick will bring star power to the only event on the men’s tennis tour that conflicts with the high-profile showdown for Olympic gold in China. With Roddick’s absence, ninth-ranked James Blake is the top-rated American in line to play for Beijing Olympic singles gold. - AFP
Deaf boxer books ticket to Beijing A young Hungarian boxer, who was born deaf, has against the odds booked his ticket to the Beijing Olympics. Norbert Kalucza, 21, one of seven children born into a poor gypsy family from Debrecen, eastern Hungary, will compete along with the world’s best in the flyweight category this summer. Suffering from congenital deafness like most of his family members, Kalucza did not learn to speak until the age of 10. But once he pulled on his gloves as a child, his world changed as he overcome his first hurdle by voicing his first words shortly after entering the ring. - AFP
Harmison, Hoggard out of second Test England have axed experienced pace bowlers Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard in a bid to save the Test series against New Zealand after their humiliating 189-run first Test loss. Harmison was widely expected to lose his place for the second Test starting today but the dropping of Hoggard was more of a surprise. - AFP
Platini plays down Spain’s exclusion Uefa chief Michel Platini yesterday voiced confidence that
Spain would not be excluded from Euro 2008 because of an ongoing row with Fifa over perceived government interference in the running of the country’s football federation. Fifa, world football’s governing body, has expressed concern over a Spanish government decision which requires all sports federations in the country to elect new presidents before the Beijing Olympics in August, which conflicts with the plans of the Spanish football federation and its president Angel Maria Villar. - AFP

The 37-year-old, who last month celebrated his 500th league appearance, has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career this campaign, helping Pompey to a place in the last four of the FA Cup. Torres strike fires Liverpool through to seal England’s Euro domination
REDS JOIN THE 1-0 S PARTY
T H E G U A R D I A N , Milan

Fernando Torres, right, celebrates with Steven Gerrard after scoring Liverpool’s winning goal against Inter Milan.
an Siro was deserted, blue and yellow ticker-tape strewn over its empty seats, save for 4,200 Liverpool fans singing along with a Beatles number that blared from the loudspeakers and captured the occasion perfectly. “Get Back” they sang in unison with the city’s other acclaimed export. Quite right, too. Rafael Benitez has taken Liverpool back to where they once belonged. A third Champions League final in four seasons is on the horizon for the Spaniard as a relentless Liverpool, combined with a touch of excellence by Fernando Torres, made relatively light work of the supposed vengeful might of Inter. The clean sweep of four English clubs in the quarters arrived with the cleanest of strikes, and the Reds march on as a team to be feared. Roberto Mancini’s men gave their all only for the wasteful front line of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Julio Cruz together with the 50th-minute dismissal of Nicolas Burdisso to deflate their chances of becoming the first team in 16 years of the Champions League to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit. Mancini later announced he will be quitting the job this summer. For 43 years, Liverpool have cursed a referee for depriving them of glory against Inter and no doubt the Italian champions will return the compliment now that the 1965 European Cup semi-final has been avenged. Inter played 100 minutes of this 180-minute tie with 10 men, Burdisso repeating the mistakes of the man he had replaced from the first leg, the suspended Marco Materazzi, but blaming officialdom is a diversionary tactic without merit.

Antlers loot Thai bankers Krung Thai Bank suffer nightmare start in Asia’s elite club competition with a 9-1 defeat at home D A I LY E X P R E S S
T
hailand Premier League outfit Krung Thai Bank found life in the AFC Champions League much tougher than imagined after an embarrassing 9-1 rout in their opening Group F match against J-League visitors Kashima Antlers yesterday. Any optimism the home side, who finished runnersup in the domestic league last season, might have had before the game evaporated as the J-League team handed them a nightmare start in Asia’s elite club competition. The match was all but over as a contest within 35 minutes after the Antlers stormed to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Yuzo Tashiro,
XTRA D AY L I G H T R O B B E R Y >> It was Krung Thai Bank’s worst-ever defeat in all competition. >> The bankmen are lying 12th in the Thailand Premier League standings.
Daiki Iwamasa and Takuya Nozawa. The Antlers ran riot after the interval by scoring six more, rendering Kasim Kone’s effort just scant consolation for the hosts, who succumbed to the worst defeat in their history. Given the outcome, the bankmen’s chances of securing the only qualification spot from the group looks remote. The rout also deepened the Thai side’s woes, who are struggling in the domestic front, lying in 12th place of the 16-team league. In the group’s other match, China’s Beijing Guoan opened their campaign with a 3-1 win over Nam Dinh of Vietnam. Meanwhile, Chon Buri restored some pride for Thailand by coming away from a tricky trip to Gamba Osaka with a 1-1 draw in their Group G match. The Thai champions were just seconds away from a famous win but for a last-gasp equaliser.

Siriporn, a former convicted drug dealer who has served a jail term, beat Japan’s Ayaka Miyano to win the WBC lightflyweight title last April, and that changed her life. She is a world champion but keeps a low profile. She is more enthusiastic about her next title bout. She has been training intensively for her third title defence against Japan’s Kayako Ibata. rance coach Marc Lievremont yesterday recalled his big guns for Saturday’s Six Nations showdown against Wales at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. In all he made six changes to the starting line-up that defeated Italy 25-13 in Paris last Sunday, bringing in bags of experience to take over from some of the new blood he has experimented with in this year’s tournament.

hailand’s mixed doubles team of Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thungthongkam cruised past Howard Bach and Eva Lee of the United States 21-18 21-13 to move into the second round of the Swiss Open Super Series in Basel yesterday. The Thai world No 6 duo next take on David Lindley and Suzanne Rayappan of England. The teams will be meeting for the first time in two years. In the men’s singles, countryman Boonsak Ponsana was due to face Indian qualifier Dicky Palyama in the opening match, while fellow Thai Poompat Sapkulchananart failed to qualify for the main draw, falling 21-15 15-21 21-12 to Richard Vaughan of Wales on Tuesday. In the women’s singles, Boonsak’s younger sister Salakjit is due to play Hwang Hye-youn of South Korea in the first round.
France have recalled winger Vincent Clerc for the Wales match.
Marc Lievremont
There are recalls for outstanding Toulouse winger Vincent Clerc and Biarritz centre Damien Traille while the half-backs are remodelled around the experienced Toulouse scrum-half JeanBaptiste Elissalde and Stade Francais fly-half David Skrela. In the pack, as expected, Julien Bonnaire returns at No 8 with World Cup standout Thierry Dusautoir alongside him at flanker. Wales will be gunning for a second Grand Slam in three years in the match, but France, with three wins and one loss so far, can deprive them of that and the Six Nations title if they win by 20 points or more. “It’s an excellent team with more experience due to the context of the match and what is at stake,” said Lievremont, who insisted that he was concerned more with just winning the game than what the margin of victory was. He said that the choice between Elissalde and Dimitri Yachvili of Biarritz for the scrum-half slot had been particularly difficult.

onny Wilkinson has won a World Cup for his country and become the highest scorer in the history of international rugby union but his days as an automatic selection for England are over. The planet’s most famous fly-half was dropped from the national team in favour of Wasps’ Danny Cipriani on Tuesday and will start this weekend’s concluding Six Nations game against Ireland on the replacements bench for the first time in almost nine years. Wilkinson, perhaps surprisingly, is the only casualty in a starting line-up which stumbled to defeat in Scotland last Saturday. The 28-year-old has been made the scapegoat for his team’s recent problems as his head coach Brian Ashton seeks to salvage something from the Murrayfield wreckage. “Jonny’s had an inconsistent Six Nations and we were looking to give Danny a start at some stage,” explained Ashton. “Jonny took the news very professionally ... for all we know he could still come on, have a blinder and win the game.” Wilkinson is back where he started a decade ago when, as an 18-year-old, he came off the bench against Ireland to become England’s youngestever player. His form this season, however, has been mixed and his display against Scotland was among his worst in an England shirt. On Tuesday he vowed to fight to regain his place. “I still desperately care about what I do. The fire is still there,” he insisted.

Japanese Shingo Katayama is also among the chief Asian contenders, along with 2006 HSBC Champions winner Yang Yong-eun, China’s Liang Wen-chong and Indians Jyoti Randhawa and Jeev Milkha Singh. Former powerlifter Choi, 37, has steadily pumped up his ranking to a career-high fifth and has now set his sights on becoming Asia’s first major winner – with the help of God. “The fact that I have got to the top five in the world has not been something that I achieved on my own. Force India ready to roll

O
fficials of the new Force India team are optimistic their two cars can compete with the midfield group in this year’s Formula One season, getting under way on Sunday. Force India, a repackaged version of the Ferrari-powered former Spyker team, will make its debut this weekend with experienced lead driver Giancarlo Fisichella and German Adrian Sutil in India’s first-ever Formula One team. The team’s new VJM01 car has completed over 6,000km in pre-season testing with an average of 368km a day without any major problems.
WE’RE NO LONGER LAPPING AROUND AT THE BACK Mike Gascoyne “We are at the start of something incredibly exciting – a new market to capture, a new spirit in the team and increased resources to really deliver,”
said team principal Colin Kolles. “Having the strong driver line-up of the experienced Giancarlo Fischella and Adrian Sutil was the first sign we are not just happy to be at the back any more and we are looking forward and laying down stones for the future. “I think we can join the midfield group this season and with it being so competitive, we could be in a position to be a regular points finisher.” Mike Gascoyne, the team’s chief technical officer, said there was a positive feeling in the team garage. “I think it is always difficult to judge from pre-season testing, but you can see that we have taken a step forward,” he said. “We are starting from the
back, so how far that step will take us we have to wait until this weekend. “But, I think one thing is very clear from testing, that we are no longer the team lapping around at the back.” India became hooked on the sport when Narain Karthikeyan raced for Jordan in 2005 and test drove with Williams over the past two years.

ormula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone is not happy with Australian Grand Prix organisers’ attempts at a compromise over his insistence on a future night Melbourne race. Ecclestone has threatened to strip Australia of the race when Melbourne’s contract expires in 2010 – unless organisers agree to stage the GP at night so European television audiences can see it live at a reasonable hour. Australian organisers have flagged a twilight start to the race next year. But the organisers’ attempts have reportedly not gone down well with Ecclestone. “It doesn’t help a lot,” Ecclestone told Sydney Morning Herald. “That’s not really what we’re looking for.”
