Queen recovers; advised to refrain from work

Our politicians are overweight. A recent survey found 66 per cent of lawmakers are “paunchy”. The portly parliamentarians risk keeling over from heart attacks or diabetes, the Public Health Ministry warns. Thai Health Promotion Foundation nutritionist SaNgha Damapong says he ran the measure over 130 legislators last week and gave 86 an F for fat. That means having a waistline larger than 90 centimetres.

on’t get mad, get cool. But not with a beer. That’s the advice of health experts for the hot season during which the Meteorological Department is predicting temperatures of up to 43 degrees Celsius over the next three months. People are advised to stay in cool areas and airconditioned rooms. The Public Health Ministry suggests exercise and no alcohol. Exercising 30 minutes a day releases endorphines and helps with sleep. Ministry permanent secretary Dr Prat Boonyawongvirot advises against consuming alcohol during the summer because of the health dangers. Alcohol expands blood vessels and causes the body to dehydrate, creating the risk of shock.

er Majesty the Queen has recovered and returned to the palace. She thanked all those who wished her well while in hospital. She left the Chulalongkorn Hospital at 4pm yesterday after comprehensive checks confirmed she was fully recovered. Her Majesty was admitted on March 9 after being diagnosed with influenza, bronchitis and sinusitis. While she was in hospital, many people from many countries, including leaders and diplomats, sent get-well messages. Many well-wishers were at the hospital yesterday to see Her Majesty off as she returned to Chitralada Palace. Doctors have advised Her Majesty to refrain from work for a period of recuperation.

Cast in wax Sculptures to adorn the crematorium for HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana’s funeral have been cast. But it will be a few months yet before they are complete. “Right now, they’re just wax castings,” says Avudh Ngernchuklin who is in charge of the crematorium. He says artists are starting to put decorative touches to the sculptures. Then they will be recast in plaster. That takes about eight weeks.

The ever-present ‘event girls’ blow the lid on backstage molestation and overzealous patrons By Thossaporn Wongwaikolayoot D A I LY E X P R E S S

t’s auto-show season and good-looking women are queuing to become “pretties” – the sex-sells face of fast cars. It’s a dream job. Increasing numbers of “event girls” are working shows, product launches and exhibitions. Some 200 recently vied for just four positions. The pay is handsome, they tell the Daily Xpress, with 10 days’ work plus training paying as much as Bt50,000. But ogling and groping come with the territory. And it sometimes goes beyond that. Most are lucky enough to avoid or elude direct harassment, but the overwhelming sentiment is that they must endure constant cat-calling and “inevitable body contact” from opportunists. Many worry this country will go the way of Japan, South Korea and China, where competition

from such a prestigious manufacturer. It will be her only chance at this, because Mercedes hires just nine new faces every year. She believes it’s her height that got her the job. She used to be a cabin attendant but quit. Know says the hardest part is remembering the details of the cars she’s employed to present. “Being a Mercedes presenter is a good chance to get future work,” she says. Mercedes pays Bt3,500 a day and a Bt1,500 allowance. Wiratcha “Jib” Winyayong will be a Lexus girl at the show. She was in the Benz arena last year. Jib says she got the part because she’s articulate and has good diction in both Thai and English. The 24-year-old says it’s tough when show-goers or others put the moves on her. She takes a diplomatic approach and talks herself out of trouble. “I’ll admit in this business you have to be diplomatic.”

Sex drive Professional photographer Prasert Thepsri says the motor show is nothing without “pretty presenters”. “The girls attract people’s attention. They make people stop and look at what they’re there to present,” he says. It’s the attractive women that get the spotlight at motor shows around the world, year after year. His camera is focused first on the women more than the motors. “The cars are always there. You can take their pictures later,” Prasert says. Beauty, revealing clothes and a sexy pose are what catch his eye. “Motorcycle presenters get the most attention. Their outfits reveal more.” But, on a conservative note, he says models shouldn’t reveal so much “Their work is to present cars in a good way.” – D A I LY X P R E S S

HOLISTIC MEDICAL METHOD Students of medicine at the Prince of Songkhla University are learning to get closer to patients to be able to treat them more effectively By Wannapa Phetdee D A I LY X P R E S S

bout 200 hard-working medical students are spending their free time volunteering at hospitals. The Prince of Songkhla University students visit inpatients, chat with outpatients waiting for treatment and sometimes make house calls in out-of-the-way places. As well as dispensing medical advice, the volunteers exchange thinking and experiences with their patients. Krittanu Narktae, 22, a thirdyear medical student, says volunteering has brought him and his fellows closer and allowed them to understand patients. “I know what patients want after talking with them, and I understand them more and can help them better. “The project has trained us to communicate with people.

We learn to analyse patients holistically. Instead of analysing only their diseases, we look at their social environment, mood and family as well. “If we understand patients’ social environment, we can tell others around them how to treat them.” Asst Prof Jarurin Pitanupong of the university’s medical school runs the volunteer project and aims to improve students’ social perspectives. Jarurin says the project is successful and improving students’ self-confidence. The volunteer project convinced Krittanu to further his studies in community medicine. “I want to change people’s quality of life. If that can prevent disease, it’s better than seeking treatment. I think health promotion can help more people,” Krittanu says.

You might catch more than just a ride in a taxi The enclosed cab raises the risk of contracting TB from drivers By Pongphon Sarnsamak D A I LY X P R E S S

T

axis are placing prominent notices asserting they are “tuberculosisfree”. Some passengers are scared TB could be carried by cabbies. The TB-Free Zone stickers are placed in the front of taxis. Dr Praparn Youngchaiyut, chief of the National Association for the Elimination of TB, says a study of the identification of risk groups is under way. He’s already discovered two taxirivers with the disease. Praparn’s study is looking at street vendors, too. TB is a common and deadly infectious disease caused by mycobacteria.

It most commonly attacks the lungs but can also affect the central nervous system and other systems. Infected people can spread the disease through the air. Sufferers with untreated TB can infect between 10 and 15 other people a year. Infections can be cured with a sixmonth, sustained drug regime. Estimates are of 91,000 new TB patients in this country each year, of whom between 5,000 and 7,000 will die. A quarter of all cases today are drug-resistant. That’s why the association is alerting people about the dangers of infection in public spaces. Praparn wants people forewarned but not panicked. His study will be finished in 2010 and will form the basis for a national prevention plan.

Taxis are starting to carry stickers declaring them TB-free as part of a drive to eradicate the disease. Two taxi drivers were found to be infected, the head of the campaign says.

FOREST AMBUSHES KILL 2 Forestry chief and policeman shot dead in attacks suspected to be by illegal loggers D A I LY X P R E S S

forestry chief and a policeman were shot dead by suspected illegal loggers in two related incidents in Tak yesterday. Klong Wang Chao National Park forest guard chief Wiroj Chuakhaopim, 52, was shot and killed in front of his 14-year-old daughter as he was leaving his house for work at about 7am, witnesses say. Wang Chao police sent to investigate were ambushed and Corporal Anusorn Tuina, 35, was shot and killed in a 10-minute gun battle. Corporal Pisit Phu-im and Sgt-Major Nongprom Saenwong were severely injured in the gunfight. Tak Governor Chumporn Polrak suspects illegal loggers bent on retaliation for a crackdown are behind the attacks. Two patrolling forestry officials were injured when unidentified gunmen shot at them last month, he says.

MEMORIAL FOR HANNA Anger over reward to killer’s family Following widespread criticism, the Phuket Provincial Police will set up a panel to reconsider plans to give the family of confessed murderer Akkaradej “Chon” Tankae the Bt100,000 in promised reward money for their help in his capture. Akkaradej was arrested in Ranong last Wednesday and charged with the murder of Swedish tourist Hanna Backlund, 26. Miss Backlund was stabbed to death at Mai Khao Beach on March 15. The Bt100,000 in reward money was put up by the Phuket Tourist Association in the hope of quickly bringing the murderer to justice and limiting damage to Phuket’s image among tourists.

bout 50 people gathered at Mai Khao beach on Saturday morning to attend a memorial service for slain Swedish tourist Hanna Backlund, who would have been 27 the day before. A local man – Akkaradej “Chon” Tankae, 31 – has confessed to stabbing Miss Backlund to death on the morning of March 15, less than 500 metres from the Mai Khao Bungalows, where she had been staying with a friend. Akkaradej was arrested in Ranong on March 19 after several days on the run. He told police he stabbed Backlund multiple times after she fought back during an unsuccessful attempt to rape her. The service, which started at 11am, was organised by Cherng Talay resident Christy Sweet.

PAT O N G T O E X PA N D C C T V S U R V E I L L A N C E >> Kathu police plan to install about 10 more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in Patong to increase security and fight crime. Kathu Police Superintendent Col Grissak Songmoonnak said more CCTV cameras are needed in Patong, as the 16 cameras that went into operation there in early 2007 are effective for traffic control, but have done little to aid criminal investigations. “The image quality from those cameras still can’t help us in crime suppression because they were installed in fixed positions to monitor traffic flow.

Monks lead prayers “I am not connected to the case in any way, but thought that it was important to do something to mark the one week anniversary of Hanna Backlund’s death,” said Christy, who is a US citizen. Mai Khao Bungalows owner Sawas Rakrangsimansuk invited six monks from two nearby temples to lead the prayers.

Akkaradej has confessed to stabbing Hanna less than 500 metres from her camp.

“The girls were staying in a tent because we had no vacant bungalows when they arrived. After a few days one became free, but they decided to stay in their tent because they enjoyed the location’s privacy. It is a very sad case, they were nice girls,” he said.

Death ‘horrendous’ Also attending the service was Consul Silvia Jurich, from the Swedish Consulate in Phuket. “It is horrendous for a young woman to meet her death like this. “It’s incredible that no-one heard her screams. It just goes to show that you cannot just assume that you are safe,” said Miss Jurich before placing incense sticks before a spirit house set up on the beach for the service.

At a press conference to announce Akkaradej’s capture last Wednesday morning, police said that because the suspect’s wife and father had provided police with key information leading to his capture, they would be given the reward money. The police are now reconsidering that decision. Phuket Provincial chief Maj Gen Decha Butnampeth told the Gazette he had appointed his deputy, Pol Col Wittayadej Worradilok, to chair a committee to review the matter. “Although following standard procedure, police have received may complaints from the public and local media that it is unsuitable to reward the suspect’s family in this case,” Gen Decha said. “In fact 12 witnesses were questioned in the case.” Col Wittayadej’s panel will review the roles of the witnesses in determining how much of the reward money each of them should be entitled to.

AMERICAN SHOT DEAD Australian, 60, held for murder of Hawaiian in restaurant By Jim Pollard D A I LY X P R E S S

n Australian man faces a murder charge over the fatal shooting of an American in northern Thailand early on Saturday. William Thomas Douglas, aged 60, is reported to have admitted shooting Gary Booth Poretsky in a restaurant in Chiang Mai town.

The reason for the shooting is unknown, but Douglas was said to have been drinking and showing off a handgun he was allegedly carrying. The two got into an argument, which ended with the American shot dead. Poretsky, 46, was shot once in the head and twice in the body at about 8am. A Chiang Mai police spokeswoman was quoted saying that Douglas had lived in Thailand for 28 years and spoke Thai well. A local woman had witnessed the shooting, she said. “A woman saw the man showing off a gun to the dead

man. They had a dispute. The Thai lady watched. The Australian guy was trying to say he was a big guy in Chiang Mai,” she was quoted as saying. Douglas is alleged to have run out of the Khoei Chiang Mai (In-law from Chiang Mai) restaurant on Sriphum Road straight after the incident but surrendered to police shortly after. He was being held in Chiang Mai police headquarters from Saturday, but is due to be transferred to the local prison today. Douglas is said to have been

living in Sansai and working as an English teacher. There have been unconfirmed reports he was a veteran from the Vietnam War and may have been an informant for the Thai police. However, some people who have had dealings with him have questioned his sanity. He allegedly told police he was doing work for the Thai Narcotics Suppression Bureau and that he had links with senior police generals. A spokesman for the Australian embassy in Bangkok said they were aware of the case.

“An Australian consular official has visited the man [Douglas] at Chiang Mai police station. Police are continuing their investigations into the matter,” the spokesman said. Douglas, who is from the town of Northam in Western Australia, could also face charges for firearms offences. Police said the weapon used in the shooting was registered, but they were checking to see who the legal owner of the gun was. The policewoman said Douglas would appear before a court at a date yet to be fixed.

HOT DEBATE

By Poomjai watched a TV programme about a popular English celebrity’s travels round China. I never had an opportunity to visit China, and I wish that I had. But watching this programme I was captivated by how very different it was to my own British experience and yearned to understand it more ... I come from a background of belief that travel is an opportunity to learn about and understand new and different things in foreign lands. In any case I start from an understanding that no country, my own included, is perfect. So picking holes in foreign ways can tend in my view to be rather narrowminded and jingoistic. But I found the style and tone of the commentary on this particular TV show grating. The celebrity seemed intent on accentuating the alien otherness of China. Cringing flamboy-

I have been coming to Thailand now for eight years and have tried hard to understand and integrate into the Thai culture. I make mistakes

and sometimes an idiot of myself, but that’s all part of the learning process. In general, if you are prepared to try and adapt and involve yourself at the grass roots, the Thais accept you and respect you for at least trying ... Super-sensitive Thais are super-sensitive towards even the smallest amount of criticism, especially when making a comparison between Thailand and one of its neighbours. I feel that criticism, made in a constructive manner, can be useful as sometimes we are so close to something we cannot see its flaws. Unfortunately society tends to focus more on the negatives than the positives, making us forget that despite the bad, there is also good. – Posted by Ben

Eye-sensing robots for safer, easier surgeries

ritish researchers are developing a medical robot which can work out the intentions of the surgeon, making surgery easier and more precise. They hope new software will lead to less invasive operations, allowing patients to recover more quickly. The improvements have been made to the most advanced robotic surgeon on the market, the Da Vinci. It allows surgeons to sit at a viewing console directing the movement of the robot’s mechanical arms inside the patient’s body. The research team is working on using the surgeon’s eye movements to direct the robot, getting the best out of both human and machine. Professor Guang Zhong Yang of the Imperial College London said robotic surgeons are currently completely under the surgeon’s control, responding only to the surgeon’s hand movements. The team has added a device which tracks the surgeon’s eye movements. By working out precisely where each eye is looking, the software can build a 3D map of the area of tissue the surgeon is looking at. “What that does is use the surgeon’s brain as a way to calculate the depth of the tissue,” surgeon Lord Darzi said. The map allows the software to stabilise the image of moving tissues such as a beating heart to make surgery easier. It means that what the surgeon sees in the viewer is stationary, while the instruments move up and down in time with the organ.

gyptian and European archaeologists on Saturday said they had discovered a giant statue of an ancient pharaonic queen on the spectacular south Egypt site of the Colossi of Memnon. The statue represents Queen Tiy, the wife of 18th dynasty Pharaoh Amenhotep III, and stands 3.62 metres high. It was discovered around the site of the massive Colossi of Memnon twin statues that command the road to Luxor’s famed Valley of the Kings. Two sphinx representing Tiy and Amenhotep III as well as ten statues in black granite of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet, who protected the pharaohs, were also found by the archaeologists. Egypt’s Culture Minister Faruq Hosni hailed the discovery as a “formidable” enterprise and said he expected the statues to be erected for public view next year. They will be joined by two 15metre-high statues, excavated in recent years, which will be placed 100 metres behind the Colossi of Memnon as part of an “open air museum”.

he Tibetan Catholic Church in Cizhong has seen its Easter services curbed after anti-Chinese riots caused the region’s deadliest tensions in two decades. As a result, this tiny community of fewer than 1,000 souls, located in an overwhelmingly Buddhist area, has been affected by the unrest where it matters the most – religion. Easter Sunday is the most important day for the congregation at Cizhong’s nearly 100year-old church due to the similarities between the resurrection of Christ and the reincarnation beliefs of Tibetan Buddhism, locals said. This Easter has been especially important as Father Yao Fei only arrived in February, making him the first permanent priest since 1949.

f men are from Mars and women are from Venus, then Mars is a land where the refrigerators are stocked with meat and frozen pizza and Venus has a bounty of yogurt, fruits and vegetables, a new study suggests. The study of eating habits of American adults – called the most extensive of its kind – was a survey of 14,000 Americans. It confirmed conventional wisdom that most men eat more meat than women, and women eat more fruits and vegetables. But there were a few surprising exceptions: Men were much more likely to eat asparagus, brussels sprouts, peas and peanuts. They also were bigger consumers of frozen pizzas, frozen hamburgers and frozen Mexican dinners. Women are more likely than men to eat eggs, yogurt and fresh hamburgers. Men also showed a little more of an appetite for runny

GET TOUGH WITH WEALTH AND PRIVILEGE Authorities to blame for allowing son of affluent and influential parents who killed one person in a road-rage incident last year to get behind the wheel again

I

t is disturbing to learn that Kanpitak Pachimsawas, a man who is standing trial for a widely publicised road rage in which he killed a woman and injured several others last year, was involved in another accident last week. Fortunately, this time, the volatile young man did not throw a tantrum, or lose control. When he launched into a terrifying fit of anger last July – after his Mercedes-Benz car was scraped by a city bus – he ploughed his vehicle into a crowded bus stop on Sukhumvit Road, killing one and seriously hurting several people who had nothing whatsoever to do with the accident. In last week’s incident, police arrived at the accident scene to find a visibly disturbed Kanpitak in his car. According to police, Kanpitak appeared to be under severe stress after the minor accident and his parents had to come and collect him. This is the same person who will be pleading in court he had been mentally unstable at the time of the death and mayhem caused by his last outburst. He will try to convince judges he cannot be held fully responsible for his actions.

Unpredictable behaviour But the question here is why haven’t public prosecutors sought an order suspending Kanpitak’s driving licence? What are they waiting for, more innocent people to die as a result of the unpredictability of Kanpitak’s behaviour? Of course, no one doubts the ability of Kanpitak’s parents – high-profile businessman Kananek Pachimsawas and former beauty queen Sawinee Pakaranang – to provide monetary compensation for victims, or would-be victims, or to hire top-flight lawyers to defend their son for any crimes he may be accused of. It is unacceptable for law enforcement officials to allow mentally unstable persons to get behind the wheel. Kanpitak should not be allowed to drive again unless he is proven mentally fit to do so. All too often, wealth and privilege and good connections in high places allow some to flout the law with impunity. Kanpitak’s case is just one of several that come to mind where the treatment of an accused has been completely at odds with that meted out in cases involving ordinary citizens. No one is above the law. That the rich and famous can get away with proverbial murder testifies to the sorry state in which the criminal justice system finds itself.

The victims of the decade-long conflict share a common doubt that the state may not provide them with justice. This seems to be a genuine concern. Indeed, the politicians who think that a blanket amnesty will secure the peace process are mistaken, as what they are saying is contradictory. First, a general pardon is not something that the state can grant; it is the right and choice of the victims. What the victims really want, according to a recent study report, is justice, which means punishment of the perpetrators.

Throughout cyberspace and beyond, we are hearing loud repercussions from newly re-elected President Hu Jintao’s call for state functionaries to be “sincere and earnest” in receiving people’s supervision and “spotlessly clean” in their service to the country and the public. Hu’s words created a buzz because they were at the same time a promise to the national legislature and the broad public, on behalf of the new national leadership the National People’s Congress has just elected or appointed.

Given the history and the behaviour of Britain, there is logic – a twisted logic – to his thinking. It’s all very well for Britain to say he is beneath contempt. But it is they who have to talk to him if the crisis is to end. “I think he granted me the interview because he feels he is getting old and it’s time to put certain things on the record. But he expects to win the election and probably will,” she says. Asked how he would like to be remembered, Mugabe told Holland: “Just as the son of a peasant family who, alongside others, felt he had a responsibility to fight for his country and was grateful for the honour that the people gave him in leading them to victory over British imperialism.”

ore than a decade of tension between Taiwan and mainland China looks set to ease with the victory of Nationalist party candidate Ma Ying-jeou in the island’s presidential election. Despite a last-minute attempt by Frank Hsieh of the Democratic People’s Party to exploit fears over China’s crackdown on Tibetan unrest, voters put priority on improved business ties with the mainland, which they hope will galvanise an economy that has lagged behind many of its Asian neighbours. Ma has promised to boost investment and trade ties, establish regular scheduled flights across the Taiwan Strait and to negotiate a peace treaty between the two sides. Ma, a former mayor of Taipei, secured 58 per cent, while Hsieh lagged far be-

hind with 41 per cent. Turnout was about 76 per cent. Television images from his campaign headquarters showed jubilant supporters waving flags, cheering and setting off celebratory fireworks. In contrast to the tense, tightly fought election in 2004, the losing candidate conceded defeat relatively early. The result is likely to prompt a change of tack in Taipei’s policy towards Beijing. Ma has promised a

break with the pro-independence stance of outgoing President Chen Shui-bian, who was detested by the mainland’s Communist leadership. Chen was unable to stand again after serving the maximum two four-year terms. Ma has proposed a peace treaty that would demilitarise the strait, and said he would ease restrictions on investments in the mainland. Opponents say Ma – who participated in previous Nationalist dictatorship governments – will concede too

much of the self-ruled island’s autonomy and democracy by cosying up to the authoritarian administration in Beijing. The Chinese government has yet to comment on the result, though officials in Beijing have made little secret of their preference for Ma. In a brief report on the result, China’s official Xinhua News Agency said Ma had won the island’s “leadership election” – reflecting Beijing’s refusal to recognise Taiwan’s government.

Krill fishing threatens life in Antarctic By Juliette Jowit OBSERVER NEWS SERVICE

T

he Antarctic, one of the planet’s last unspoilt ecosystems, is under threat from mankind’s insatiable appetite for harvest from the seas. The population of krill, a tiny crustacean, is in danger from the growing demand for health supplements and food for fish farms. Global warming

has already been blamed for a dramatic fall in numbers, because the ice that is home to the algae and plankton they feed on is melting. Now “suction” harvesting, which gathers up vast quantities, has been introduced to meet increased demand. It threatens not just krill, but the entire ecosystem that depends on them, say environmental campaigners. Krill are believed to be im-

portant in removing the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, by eating carbon-rich food near the surface and excreting it when they sink to lower, colder water to escape predators. “Whales, penguins, seals, albatross and petrels – all those creatures we think are absolute icons of Antarctica – depend on krill,” says Richard Page, a Greenpeace marinereserves expert.

“It’s part of the global commons, and one of the most pristine environments on Earth.” However, scientists say so far the total catch is a small proportion of the population. “We’re aware of this fishing effort gearing up and we’re not particularly concerned at the moment,” says Dr Geraint Tarling, head of ecosystem dynamics at the British Antarctic Survey.

T

he popular ghost story “Mae Nak Phra Khanong” returns to cinemas next month, but this time moviegoers won’t be clutching their armrests while the beautiful phantom – unable to accept her early death – goes after her soldier husband. That’s because in “Nak”, the legendary ghost takes the form of a cute animated character, and rather than doing any haunting, she’s busy saving mankind from spirits with a bad attitude. “We didn’t want to repeat the same old story, and besides, it’s too scary for animation,” says producer Boyd Kosiyabongse. The adventure begins in the countryside, where Nak

and her fellow spooks are watching an outdoor movie. Suddenly, a bad ghost reaches out from the screen and grabs a little boy, hauling him off to the city for a powerboosting sacrificial rite.

Nak to the rescue Nak teams up with other spirits – among them Phee Hua Khad (the headless ghost) and Phee Pred (the tall ghost) – and goes to the child’s rescue. “We show modern ghosts as the villains,” says Boyd, who is better known as a pop musician. He’s composed several songs for the soundtrack. “Times have changed. Today’s ghosts are violent – they hurt people for no reason. It’s very different from the Thai ghost films I saw as a kid. They were spooky, but

entertaining.” Boyd is no newcomer to animation. A long-time comic freak, he started BBoyd CG several years ago and published the comic magazine Katch before launching the animated TV series “Dracula Tok”. He wanted to do a featurelength “Dracula Tok” but Sahamongkol Film president Somsak Techarattanaprasert. him to tackle Mae Nak instead. Although 3D-animation is the popular industry standard, Boyd and his team decided to go with the old-fashioned 2D style. “It’s friendlier and much more intimate,” says director Natthapong Rattanachoksirikul. ‘Nak’ opens in cinemas on April 3.

So you’ve no reason to be checking the job ads – until your boss suddenly announces that she is retraining as a teacher, the guy you share cigarette breaks with serves notice that he’s off to save the rainforest, and the person who joined the same day as you is poached by the opposition. Doesn’t that change things a bit? Sometimes one key team member leaving can trigger a whole domino chain of staffing upheavals. “Employers are always surprised that, when they introduce redundancies, the talent they wanted to keep leaves as well,” says careers coach and author of “How to Get a Job You'll Love” John Lees. “People may be perfectly content in their job but as soon as they see other people leaving they start to wonder what else is out there.”

Samantha Sykes worked in a university marketing office for four years, “all the while not really feeling like I was really using my skills”. When her line manager announced she was leaving to retrain, it gave Sykes the nudge she needed to visit a careers adviser. “The funny thing is,” she says, “we all seemed to jog along quite happily. But shortly after I left, one

of the other marketing executives decided to go back to university as well.” Sykes believes that had her line manager not left, she would still be working there. Similarly Piers Zangana decided to leave his job with a mental - health hospital after his immediate boss left to pursue other interests, despite there being “nothing that was particularly wrong with the

job, apart from having no real room for me to develop”. He believes that, while it is difficult to prevent the emotional reaction triggered by somebody’s resignation “there is a lot to be said for communication after a person has left and discussing that impact on the rest of the team. If people are clear about their futures and development, they should remain loyal.”

omantics have a hard time facing up to the fact that affairs occur, and not all that infrequently. It often emerges that the reason for the infidelity lies somewhere in the past. One of the partners had long since begun to distance himself or herself from the other. But it doesn’t have to go that far. Little signs in everyday life can indicate that one partner is starting to pull away from the other. “When one partner busies himself or herself alone all the time and avoids encounters with the other partner, that can mean that he or she internally is dismissing the relationship,” says psychologist Michael Mary of Schadeland in Germany’s northeastern state of Mecklenburg Vorpommern. “People search for perfection in their relationships,” says Eva Maria Zurhorst, a couple’s counsellor in Wuppertal. When

one partner has the feeling something is missing, they try to fill the vacuum – and sometimes they look outside the relationship for what’s missing. Even when everything appears to be going well, men and women still cannot be sure. That is the experience of Erika Berger of Cologne, who works at a sex talk service. There are banal reasons people break out of their relationships sexually, she says. “There are people who have never had a great sexual experience. In their case, curiosity and the fear of missing something are very big things,” Berger says. Sensitive people can tell when their partner has been active elsewhere, says Berger, adding that women have a sixth sense in this regard. “When men all of a sudden are much more attentive or bring flowers or presents for no reason, we prick up our ears,” Berger says. ARIES (March 21 - April 19) You may be looking for love, but you are likely to find just the opposite if you are too vocal about your beliefs. A secret affair will cost you, so don’t even consider going that route.

think marriage leads to immediate grumpiness in husbands. That usually only arrives after a few years. At this stage, husbands defend themselves against accusations that they are getting more grumpy with age by explaining it away as charming crankiness. Clearly your husband thinks he can skip these formative years, but you need to disabuse him of this notion. Tell him to stop whining.

LEO (July 23 - August 22) As long as you don’t let love cost you financially, you will do just fine. However, as soon as you try to buy love, expect to face heartache, not to mention an empty bank account. VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) You’ll attract lots of attention. Emotions will be up and down, and sudden changes regarding your feelings will lead you in a direction that you least expect. A relationship is in the stars. LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) You aren’t likely to be thrilled with whoever you meet once the novelty wears off. Chances are good that whoever you deal with will exaggerate about his or her worth and future intentions. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Don’t let work stop you from enjoying an intimate encounter. An unusual partner will help spark your imagination, leading you to do an even better job once you’ve had some fun. Enjoy. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21) You aren’t likely to get your way. If someone is being too pushy or acting strange, back away. Don’t make a commitment to anyone just to avoid an argument. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19) Your involvement in something you believe in will lead to someone from your past with whom you’ve longed to get in touch. Don’t wait for him or her to come to you: make your move. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) Don’t give anyone reason to believe you are his or hers alone. Someone is likely to get the wrong impression if you show interest, making it difficult to find Mr or Ms Right. PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Get away and visit exotic destinations and you will soon find someone who rocks your world. Love, passion and a serious relationship are all in the stars, so prepare to have an intimate time.

This romantic comedy produced by GMM Tai Hub is a cut above the usually forgettable romantic trifles offered by Thai studios. Today's Birthday: If you take on too much too fast, the problems that arise will discourage you from moving forward. Another stab at a goal you have unsuccessfully attempted in the past will take on a new life. A relationship you may have some problems with can be resolved if you are compassionate and remain calm.

Saturday’s Puzzle Answer

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

Concentrate on sending out positive vibes, no matter what's going on around you. Anger will not solve problems but thinking matters through and coming up with a viable solution will. Don't overextend yourself. Taurus (April 20-May 20)

You can make things happen if you take the initiative. With a little charm, you will get others to do things for you, making it easy to pull things together. A strong connection with someone will help you close a deal. Gemini (May 21-June 21)

There will be too many choices, variables or people involved to get things perfect. Take a wait-and-see approach. An older relative or child is likely to be a burden. Fix the problem and move on. Cancer (June 22-July 22)

You will be able to wheel-and-deal with the best of them today, so don't hesitate to make your point. Love is looking very positive and travel plans can include both work and pleasure.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★★★★★

Leo (July 23-August 22)

Don't be fooled into thinking something is easy because someone else makes it look that way. Go through all the motions if you want to get things right. Do your research or you will fall short of your goals. Virgo (August 23-Sept 22)

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

You can't go wrong if you follow the plan you put together. An opportunity will be made available. Love is on the rise and a partnership will take on a whole new meaning for you. Don't feel you have to make changes at home just yet. Libra (Sept 23-Oct 22)

Work should be your prime concern. Whether looking to change positions, advance or start something new, now is the perfect time to give it your best shot. An unusual opportunity will bring you rewards beyond your wildest dreams. Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21)

There are deals to be finalized, settlements that can bring you gains, and investments in your surroundings that will be beneficial. Don't let things ride when there is so much to do that can put you in a great position. Love is on the rise. Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21)

Someone you rely on will let you down if you don't follow his or her advice. You can expect to face problems with anyone who is sitting in a key position. A friendship will be on shaky ground - make amends. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19)

Alyson Hannigan Singer Nick Lowe is 59. Bassist Dougie Thomson of Supertramp is 57. Comedian Louie Anderson is 55. Actor Robert Carradine is 54. Actress Donna Pescow is 54. Actress Kelly LeBrock is 48. TV personality Star Jones is 46. Actress Annabella Sciorra is 44. Singer-violinist Sharon Corr of The Corrs is 38. Actress Lara Flynn Boyle is 38. Rapper Maceo of De La Soul is 38. Actress Alyson Hannigan is 34. Actress Keisha Castle-Hughes is 18.

Do things differently and you will surprise everyone with your adaptability and uniqueness. A change in the way you earn your living will turn into a greater opportunity than you first imagined. A partnership can be taken to several different levels. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18)

Don't give away what you've worked so hard to keep. You can't let your ego get in the way of a decision that could potentially leave you in a handicapped position. Don't let others cost you financially, emotionally or legally. Pisces (Feb 19-March 20)

Take whatever you are doing to the next level with confidence. You can make positive changes to your surroundings. Whether you are in a relationship or not, a favourable romantic turn is about to come your way.

Last Monday’s answers:

it has been lacking in the IWC in recent years.” Hogarth, an American, helped persuade Japan last year to suspend its plans to kill humpback whales for the first time in four decades. Japan says whaling is part of its culture and kills up to 1,000 whales a year, exploiting a loophole in a 1986 global moratorium that allows “lethal research” on the giant mammals, although the meat ends up in supermarkets. Australia has stepped up its opposition to whaling under new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and has sent a ship to monitor the Japanese mission, but Canberra condemned the activists’ attack and appealed for restraint from both sides. In central London meanwhile, police were called in by Ja-

Anti-whaling protesters demonstrated in London Thursday as the industry’s global body opened talks aimed at breaking a bitter deadlock between pro- and anti-whaling groups. One man was arrested after he strapped himself to the front of Japan’s embassy, while protesters also gathered outside the hotel where the International Whaling Commission (IWC) started three days of informal talks. “Stop the slaughter” and “Save the whales,” read handmade posters held up by protesters outside the hotel near London Heathrow airport, where the talks are to continue until Saturday. The IWC meeting comes

as Japanese whalers are locked in a struggle with conservation activists who threw acid at crew members of a ship participating in Japan’s annual whale hunt in the Southern Ocean. Japan was enraged by Monday’s attack and said it would raise the incident at the meeting. Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura said it was “not permissible to use violence to try to force through one’s opinion”. Japan’s deputy whaling commissioner Joji Morishita added: “Even if people disagree with each other, they can still come together and talk calmly and reasonably about the issues that concern them.” “It happens in other international organisations, but

pan’s mission after the man apparently scaled the front of the embassy building before attaching himself to a balcony. Martin Wyness, an activist for US-based anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd International, climbed up the building to take the Japanese flag down to half mast. He also unfurled a banner stating: “Japan Stop Your Illegal Whaling.” “I’ve lowered the Japanese flag to half mast in tribute to the whales they have killed,” said the 50-year-old, who staged a similar stunt at the embassy in January. “Norway and Iceland admit they kill whales for their meat, but Japan still pretend they do it for research. We want the IWC to encourage Japan to start behaving like a responsible nation.” A police spokeswoman said Wyeness was arrested for trespassing.

French league giants’ loss to minnows adds to recent exits in cup competitions and piles the pressure on coach Eric Gerets.

His decision followed a recent withdrawal from the county’s pre-season tour of the United Arab Emirates after a recurrence of the stress-related illness. “I have tried on numerous occasions to make it back to the international stage and it has proved more difficult than I expected,” Trescothick, a veteran of 76 Tests and 123 ODIs, said. – AFP

She said in an open letter that her decision is a “strong message to China that the world community could not accept its actions.’’ “The slaying of the Tibetans ... is an outright violation of human rights,’’ Narisa wrote. “It happened two weeks before the Olympic torch leaves Athens and five months before the Games. This reflects China’s negligence of world sentiment.’’ – AP

ewcastle won for the first time since Kevin Keegan returned as manager, defeating visiting Fulham 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday through goals by Mark Viduka and Michael Owen. Newcastle ended a winless streak dating to January 16, the day the Magpies announced Keegan would begin his second stint as manager. Newcastle then lost six games and tied

three and were eliminated from the FA Cup. Keegan first managed Newcastle from 1992-97. Newcastle went ahead in the sixth minute on Viduka’s goal. Owen forced Fulham goalkeeper Kasey Keller into making several saves before scoring with an 83rd-minute header. “Whilst it doesn’t mean we are not still in some danger, it just takes the pressure off everyone at the club,’’ Keegan said. “The players’ attitude has been questioned, my ability as a manager has been questioned, but that’s what you leave yourself open for if you don’t get results.’’

It was the 32nd consecutive away league game that Fulham have failed to win and they stay in 19th place. “We have got to keep believing that our football can get us out of this situation, and we have got to hope that the things that didn’t go right for us today we can put right,’’ Fulham manager Roy Hodgson said. At the other end of the table Everton were left two points behind city rivals Liverpool, having played one more game, in the race for the fourth Champions League place after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to West Ham. Aigeybeni Yakubu opened the scoring in the eighth minute at Goodison Park before Hammers striker Dean Ashton equalised later.

a shocker with City contributing to the misery at a time when they have targeted a top10 finish. Sunderland moved further away from the drop zone with a 1-0 win away to Euro hopefuls Aston Villa, their first league win on their travels this season, thanks to Michael Chopra’s 83rd-minute goal, while Middlesbrough beat bottom-ofthe-table Derby County by the same scoreline. Reading moved five points clear of danger and nudged Birmingham nearer the bottom three with a 2-1 win at the Madejski Stadium. Before last night’s matches, Manchester United led the table with 70 points, followed by Arsenal with 67.

uventus blew the Serie A title race wide open with a shock 2-0 victory at leaders Inter Milan on Saturday night. The third-placed team produced a remarkable performance to allow AS Roma, who beat Empoli 2-1 at home earlier in the day, to close to within just four points of the champions. Argentina-born Italy midfielder Mauro Camoranesi opened the scoring four minutes after the break from a suspiciously offside-looking position. And just past the hour mark French forward David Trezeguet doubled the visitors’ advantage to give Juve a lead they never looked like relinquishing. Portugal midfielder Maniche gave Inter late hope with a consolation goal seven minutes from time and he also hit the post in the dying moments but it was not enough. Juve captain Alessandro Del Piero claimed there was still work to be done by his team. “We can’t dwell on this,

we have to keep giving everything in every match,” he said. “We can’t dwell on what might have been. The right thing to do is keep giving everything.” Roma overcame the loss of Simone Perrotta to a red card early in the second half to keep their title chase alive. They were locked at 1-1 when Perrotta was dismissed but a goal from veteran defender Cristian Panucci sealed the three points. AC Milan kept up their chase for fourth place and Champions League soccer next season as they won 1-0 at Torino with a goal from Brazilian teenager Pato.

Sevilla’s Diego Capel scored their only goal in the lost match against Atletico de Madrid.

Juventus’ Mauro German Camoranesi, right, celebrates his goal.

tletico Madrid have never qualified for the Champions League but that wait may soon come to an end after they defeated Sevilla 2-1 on Saturday to move five points clear of their rivals. Goals from Argentinian internationals Kun Aguero and Maxi Rodriguez saw Atletico overcome 10-man Sevilla, who had Enzo Maresca sent off in the second half, and they sit fourth with a fivepoint cushion over Sevilla. It was the first time Atletico had won at Sevilla’s Sanchez Pizjuan stadium since the 1992-93 season and the historic victory puts them in pole position for a Champions League berth. For Sevilla, the team that have collected the most points in 2008, it represents a major setback but they still have nine games left to fight for a second successive season in the Champions League. Earlier Real Mallorca took a giant step towards staying in the Spanish first division with a 1-0 win over relegation rivals Deportivo La Coruna.

The sight of two Finns finishing on the podium in first and third places represented their bestever Formula One result. Defending world champion Kimi Raikkonen kicked off the defence when, a week after a dreadful day at Melbourne, he won the Malaysian Grand Prix for Ferrari.

FOR SURE IT’S A GOOD DAY.BUT IT WOULD BE BETTER TO BE FIRST AND SECOND. Kimi Raikkonen

I’m happy with where I’m at,” Ogilvy said. “If I can keep playing the way I’m playing and putt well, you never know.” Singh was eight-under par for the round with two holes to play while Clark and Storm were seven-under on the round with three holes remaining for each. Woods, a 13-time major winner chasing Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 titles, is in his last tuneup for next month’s Masters.

But the Italian team’s hopes of a dream one-two finish just a week after their embarrassment in Australia where both cars failed to complete the race were wrecked by Brazilian Felipe Massa spinning off while running second. The Latin American’s error gave Pole Robert Kubica in his BMW a perfect opportunity to grab his career-best finish in second ahead of steadily-improving Finn Heikki Kovalainen for McLaren Mercedes. McLaren team-mate Briton Lewis Hamilton, who won in Australia, bat-

tled through a topsy-turvy race and various problems with pitstops and tactics, to finish fifth behind Italian Jarno Trulli in a Toyota. His efforts kept him on top of the drivers’ championship after two rounds. Both McLaren men were forced to start five places back on the grid from their original qualifying places after being charged with blocking other cars inadvertently at the end of Saturday’s qualifying session. Raikkonen’s win was the 16th of his career and proved he is carrying no “negative baggage” after his dismal outing at

aiwan’s Lin Wen-tang captured his third Asian Tour title after a dazzling eight-under-par 64 in the final round to beat teenage rival Noh Seungyul by five strokes in the US$300,000 Asian Tour International yesterday. Lin had an eagle and six birdies when rain stopped play at the Pattana Golf and Sports Club for more than two hours. But the Taiwanese returned to save par in the last three holes for a total 23-under 265. “The last three holes were important to me. If I could maintain the form, I knew I could win,’’ said Lin, who previously bagged wins in the 2006 Taiwan Open and 2007 Brunei Open. The latest victory earned him $47,550. “I called my wife the night before and told her I was going to win. I proved that I was not overconfident,’’ said the 32-year-old, who dedicated this win to new Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou. Noh Seung-yul, after three rounds in the lead, carded his lowest score of the week – a 71 – for a total 18-under 270. “It was a good experience. I prefer golf to school,’’ said the 16-year-old, who ended two strokes ahead of the joint thirdplace finishers Taichiro Kiyota of Japan, Marcous Both of Australia, Ben Leong of

Hopefully I will do better in future,’’ said Sattaya after a 71, despite birdies in the opening two holes. Wisuth hit his second straight 69 to enjoy his best finish on the Asian Tour. “I didn’t expect to do so well. This will boost my confidence in the next events,’’ the 26-year-old Thai said. Among the other Thais, Chawalit Plaphol finished joint 13th, Thaworn Wiratchant was 16th, Prayad Marksaeng 19th and Thongchai Jaidee 23rd.

Could have returned better, sure,” Federer said. “But the guy was on top of his game. He took his chances – was over in a heartbeat.” Fish said Federer remained the man to beat. “In the locker room we kind of think it’s a joke – ‘Oh my gosh, Roger hasn’t won a tournament yet this year,’” Fish said. Fish said he chatted with Federer about that Australian Open loss to eventual champion Novak Djokovic as they waited to play on Saturday. In the other tie, Rafael Nadal just ran out of steam. The second-ranked Spaniard fell 6-3 6-2 to Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic. The third-seeded Serbian turned the tables on Nadal, who had beaten him here in last year’s final clash.

BECKS AND CALL Beckham on track for his 100th cap as Capello drops six players from the England squad A P , London

D

avid Beckham remains on course to play his 100th game for England in this week’s friendly against France after he was retained in coach Fabio Capello’s final squad on Saturday. Capello left off six players for Wednesday’s match at the Stade de France from the provisional 30-man squad he announced on Thursday. Forwards Gabriel Agbonlahor, Jermain Defoe and Ashley Young, midfielders Shaun Wright-Phillips and Jermaine Jenas, and defender David Wheater were the players to miss out.

I ALWAYS SAID THAT WHEN BECKHAM WAS FIT HE COULD BE IN THE SQUAD Fabio Capello Jenas and Wright-Phillips both scored in Capello’s first match in charge, a 2-1 friendly win over Switzerland on February 6. Goalkeeper Scott Carson and defender Matthew Upson were ruled out of the squad due to injury. Former England international Paul Robinson was called up to replace Carson, but Upson, who missed West Ham’s 1-1 draw with Everton on Saturday with a calf injury, was not replaced. Carson’s injury was not dis-

closed. He played all of Villa’s 1-0 loss to Sunderland on Saturday. England’s third goalkeeper, Chris Kirkland, could also be in doubt after he fell awkwardly in Wigan’s 3-1 defeat to Blackburn. “The rules are that he will join up and they [England medical staff] will assess him and see how he is in the morning,’’ Wigan manager Steve Bruce said. “I have to say he is moving very gingerly with his back, but he will join up. I’m sure the doctors and officials at England will examine him and see what they do with him.’’ The England squad was to meet late last night after Manchester United hosted Liverpool and Chelsea played Arsenal in the Premier League. Capello’s assistants were watching both games.
