Obsessed with serial killers By Eminem Rapper and producer
I
’ve always been infatuated with serial killers and what goes through their minds. Somehow I ended up with incorporating it in the rhyme [on his new album “Relapse”]. I always watch those [serial killer] documentaries but I’ve never applied it to my everyday psyche. So now I wake up in the morning and drink some blood and I go f**k and kill people, you know.

BMA to showcase successes
Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra and his team are planning to showcase their performance via a three-day exhibition at the Central World. The exhibition will run from July 17 to July 19, Bangkok Metropo-litan Administration (BMA) spokesman Tharadol Piampongsan said. Sukhumbhand has been the city governor for about six months now. “Aside from speaking about what he has already done, he will also tell Bangkok residents about what he is going to do for them,” Tharadol said. Sukhumbhand has six main policies. On the econ o m i c front, the governor plans to establish Bangkok as the region’s Sukhumbhand trade and tourism hub. “He also aims to make Bangkok a safe place for everyone,” Tharadol added. On the environment, Sukhumbhand has planned to tackle pollution and garbage issues so as to make the capital a more pleasant place to live in. The governor intends to implement practical policies for quality educational services in the city. DAILY

ALL NOT WELL WITH GEL A nicotine alternative to cigarettes could be a health hazard, experts warn D A I LY X P R E S S
A
uthorities will have to watch out for nicotine gel, an alternative cigarette that looks set to attract smokers but may be harmful to health. By just rubbing the gel in one’s hands, one will be able to experience having a cigarette within 30 seconds. The nicotine gel is touted as a solution to people who feel the urge to smoke in smokingfree places. “The problem is there is no re-
search to confirm this product is really safe,” Thailand Health Promotion Institute president Dr Hatai Chitanondh said yesterday. “This is not a certified quit-smoking product.” According to him, the nicotine gel is already available at more than 400 retail shops in Malaysia. Despite its ban in Thailand, the product has the potential to find its way to Thai smokers via Internet advertisements. “So, we need to
monitor the product movement closely,” Hatai said, a veteran crusader against smoking. Hatai said the gel could make people take in too much nicotine before they realise it. “Possible sideeffects are higher blood pressure and faster heartbeat rate,” he pointed out. “Such side effects could be dangerous in people who have underlying diseases”. Thailand has also banned the sale of electronic cigarettes. Made of stainless steel, the ecigarette has a chamber for storing liquid nicotine in various concentrations and it
is powered by a rechargeable battery and resembles a real cigarette. Users puff on it as they would a real cigarette, but they do not light it, and it produces no smoke. Rather, it produces a fine, heated mist, which is absorbed into the lungs. Companies often market electronic cigarettes as a healthier alternative to tobacco smoking. However, the World Health Organisation last year issued a release warning it does not consider the electronic cigarette to be a legitimate smoking cessation aid.

he doctor who tried to revive Michael Jackson after a cardiac arrest met for three hours with Los Angeles police investigators to answer questions about how the singer died. Conrad Murray was interviewed by police for a second time about the circumstances of Jackson’s death on June 25, the doctor's law firm, Stradley, Chernoff and Alford in Houston, said in an e-mailed statement yesterday. An attorney from the group, Edward Chernoff, was with Murray during the meeting with police. The doctor contin-
ued efforts to resuscitate Jackson during the singer's ambulance ride to the hospital, the law firm said. “During the meeting, Dr Murray helped identify the circumstances around the death of the pop icon and clarified some inconsistencies,” according to the statement. “Dr Murray has been in Los Angeles since the death of Mr Jackson. He rode in the ambulance to the hospital and stayed at the hospital for hours comforting and consoling the Jackson family.” Jackson’s family suspects Murray can answer some lin-
Jackson children ‘fantastic’ Michael Jackson’s three children are in “fantastic” shape at the family’s compound in Los Angeles, the musical clan's patriarch Joe Jackson said on Saturday. The King of Pop is survived by three children – Prince Michael, 12, Paris, 11, and Prince Michael II, 7 – when he collapsed and died on Thursday. In a brief interview with Fox News aired late on Saturday, Joe Jackson said that the children were “fantastic”. They “are enjoying themselves with the other kids”, he told the network's talk-show host Geraldo Rivera. Joe Jackson also dismissed the notion that stress killed Michael Jackson as the 50-year-old prepared for a gruelling 50-concert comeback in London. “No, it did not,” he said. “We're going to miss the great superstar, the biggest known in the world,” he said. gering questions about the singer’s last hours, but they have been unable to contact him, the Rev Jesse Jackson said on Saturday. The doctor was considered a witness and is not a suspect, the
law firm said. The meeting came as Jackson family members began arranging the funeral. The family is also seeking a second autopsy to resolve unanswered questions about his death, the Jesse
Jackson told the news service. It was not immediately confirmed early yesterday whether a second autopsy was performed. “The routine inquiry is now an investigation,” Jesse Jackson said. “They [Jacksons] didn't know the doctor. ... He should have met with the family.” Detectives impounded Murray’s car, which was parked at the singer's rented home, because it may contain evidence related to Jackson’s death, possibly prescription medications. The coroner's comments suggest there was no evidence Jackson had a classic heart attack, an event caused by blocked coronary arteries, Jerry Kornfeld, a physician and author of the book “Your 100 Year Heart", said yesterday.

‘I never paid a woman’ On Wednesday, Berlusconi launched a new tourism campaign for Italy, saying the country needed to rehabilitate its image because its reputation had been tarnished by his recent personal scandals and a garbage crisis in Naples last year. “There is nothing in my private life that I should apologise for,” Berlusconi told the gossip magazine Chi, which he owns. “I have never paid a woman. New laws requiring disabled pedestrians to wear traffic signs have met with frustration and derision in Indonesia, where in the eyes of the law cars have taken priority over people. The laws will do nothing to improve road safety or ease the traffic that is choking the life out of the capital city of some 12 million people, and serve only to highlight official incompetence, analysts said. Within five years, if nothing changes, experts predict Jakarta will reach total gridlock, with every main road and backstreet clogged with barely moving, pollutionspewing cars. That’s too late for the longawaited urban rail link known as the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), which has only just entered the design stage and won’t be operational until 2016. Instead of requiring level footpaths and ramps, lawmakers voted unanimously this month to demand disabled people wear signs announcing their condition so motorists won’t run them down as they cross the street.

itipon Chitsantisook failed for five consecutive years to win the Onward New Designer Fashion Grand Prix. But stubbornness finally paid off last year. “Losing never got me down,” he says. “I just thought, ‘I have to be better next year!’” Armed with a Thai government scholarship, the 27-year-
old Chulalongkorn University graduate is now pursuing his master’s degree in international fashion design at the Institut Francais de la Mode in Paris. He came across the Japanbased Onward competition six years ago and kept on entering until he became the fourth Thai to win it – no easy feat with more than 13,000 designers from all over the world submitting sketches.
His “Infinity” was a kneelength, sleeveless, black chiffon dress with silver embroidery and dots. Titipon says every square centimetre was a work of art: he sewed every silver line into the cloth himself. “The dress looked like it was moving all the time, even when the model stood still.” Included in the final 30 candidates for the prize, Titipon still wasn’t confident as he flew to Japan for the finals.
“The winner in 2007 was also a Thai. I didn’t think they’d let another designer from the same country win again.”
The thrill of victory As the models walked onstage wearing the finalists’ creations, the judges’ points were electronically displayed, Olympics style. “Infinity” scored 86 points, and no one else came close. Titipon believes the relative simplicity of his creation was a big plus. “Because this is a contest for single outfits, not collections,
some people try to get all their ideas into that one piece, which is too much,” he says. “It should be extravagant, but not over the top.” He wasn’t initially schooled in design, but reckons that helped too. “I think and conceptualise differently. And studying comparative literature helps you to understand human nature – it offers inspirations that other designers might not have.” Titipon is determined to become a university lecturer back home as well as launching his own clothing brand.

All Blacks rugby legend Jonah Lomu is set to sign for French third division side Marseille Vitrolles, the club said. “Marseille Vitrolles is on the point of finalising the transfer of the greatest legend in world rugby,” the club said. “Lomu in Marseille, it is the promise of a great story of human interest that only rugby can produce and an exciting challenge for an exceptional player who has just one thing on his mind – to help his new club expand.”
Dixon outruns Franchitti Scott Dixon grabbed the lead from team-mate Dario Franchitti on pit road midway through the SunTrust Challenge and earned his 19th career IndyCar Series victory, tying the series record. Open yesterday with a win at the Mizuno Open. The 17-year-old Ishikawa shot a final round 73 to secure a place at the July 16-19 British Open at Turnberry with his first win of 2009. “I’m thrilled to have qualified for the British Open,” said Ishikawa. “There were some tense moments today but it all worked out in the end.” Yesterday’ win was the third of Ishikawa’s career on the Japanese tour. Serbia’s Victor Troicki, top, dives for the ball as he plays Andy Murray. The Briton won 6-2 6-3 6-4.
BIG EXPECTATIONS I won’t get carried away, vows British hope Murray AFP, London
A
ndy Murray insisted yesterday that he can keep a lid on sky-high expectations that he is about to end a 73-wait for a British male Wimbledon champion. Murray, bidding to be the first home winner since Fred Perry in 1936, took just 96 minutes to see off Serbia’s Viktor Troicki in the third round on Saturday, allowing just a single break point and firing 17 aces. His next match is today against Swiss Olympic doubles gold medallist Stanislas
Wawrinka with the winner heading to the quarter-finals. But the third seeded Murray refuses to get swept away by the desperate hopes of home supporters. “I’d love to get to the final, but there’s a lot of tennis to be played in the second week,” said the Scotsman whose best showing here was a last eight place in 2008 where he was beaten by Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard went to take the title from Roger Federer but is absent through injury this year, a factor which has only served to increase the hype. “There is expectation from the media and the people who read the newspapers. That’s where the expectation gets big-
ger and greater. But I don’t try to do anything different. It’s just one of those things that you get used to dealing with. I have never had a problem dealing with it in the past and I would be surprised if that changes next week.” Murray put on a show fit for the 24 Olympic champions watching on from the royal box, one of whom was compatriot Sir Chris Hoy, the four-time cycling gold medallist. “I got the chance to meet him afterwards. He’s a very, very successful guy. I didn’t really know whether to call him Sir. I didn’t know how that works. I think I called him Chris.” Murray eased to a 6-2 6-3 6-4 win over 23-year-old Troicki.
I am not an alcoholic: Symonds
Fred Funk shot a 7-under 65 to gain a three-stroke lead after two rounds at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open on Saturday. Funk had eight birdies to go with one bogey to reach 15-under 129 and open a lead over Ronnie Black, defending champion Eduardo Romero and Lonnie Nielsen (66). Black and Romero each shot 9-under 63s, the best rounds of the day. – AP Andrew Symonds says he is a binge-drinker.
Disgraced Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds said yesterday he had been diagnosed as a binge-drinker, not an alcoholic, and had felt “caged in” as his celebrity status grew. The controversial but highly talented cricketer said in a television interview here he understood why supporters were disappointed with how his international career had gone so badly off the rails. “Still to this day I realise how lucky I am [to have played for Australia],” he said, adding he had “desperately” wanted to play for his country. He admitted he had a drink problem, but stopped short of saying he was an alcoholic. “I would drink too much, too fast, too quickly,” he said, adding it would make him aggressive. “I’m not an alcoholic, I’ve been diagnosed as a binge-drinker.”

DEVILS FACE CRISIS Big stars Villa, Ribery, Benzema prefer Spain to Old Trafford AGENCIES
lex Ferguson returns to work today with £100 million to spend – but Manchester United in a recruitment crisis. Sunday Mirror says the United boss expected to have both Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez still at his disposal when he jetted out for his annual holiday in the south of France three weeks ago. While United may have banked £80 million from Ronaldo’s world-record move to Real Madrid and saved a further £25.5 million when Tevez decided his future did not lie with the Premier League champions, Ferguson has discovered that landing big names to pacify the Old Trafford fans has presented him with a major problem. Karim Benzema, David Villa and Franck Ribery were the three men placed at the top of Ferguson’s wish-list last week when it became clear Tevez would follow Ronaldo out of the club. But all three have made it clear they want to reign in Spain rather than Manchester. Benzema and Ribery have informed their clubs that, like Ronaldo, they see the Bernabeu as their ultimate destination. They want to remain at their respective clubs Lyon and Bayern Munich for 12 months in a belief that Real Madrid adviser Zinedine Zidane will make good his promise to take them to the Spanish capital..
AFP
A
Karim Benzema is wanted by Real Madrid, Manchester United and Arsenal. Villa has made it clear his future will be in Madrid or Barcelona and he will not consider a move away from Valencia even if United come knocking with money to burn. Benzema is Ferguson’s No 1 target and Lyon have started to send encouraging messages that the French international can be bought at the right price. If an agreement between the clubs can be reached it would still need all of Ferguson’s powers of persuasion to bring Benzema to Old Trafford with the World Cup approaching. United are due to complete a move for Wigan’s Antonio Valencia this week for about £18 million, although it is unlikely
Fraizer Campbell will move in the opposite direction as a makeweight now Sunderland have moved in for his services. Ferguson meets United chief executive David Gill – who also returns from holiday today – to discuss new recruits. The players report back for pre-season training a week today and Ferguson will want to reinforce his squad before then.
Arsenal after Frenchman Arsenal are ready to hijack the Manchester United move for Benzema, says Mirror. The Gunners board will be prepared to fund a £30 million fee for Benzema, 21, if Arsene Wenger opts to cash in on
Emmanuel Adebayor. AC Milan have been considering making a new move for Adebayor this week. Togo ace Adebayor, 25, has also been linked with a move to Inter Milan and even Chelsea. Benzema says he would prefer another season at Lyon to make sure he cements a place in the France side for the World Cup. But the club’s owners have hinted that a bid of more than £30 million would turn their heads. Gunners chief Wenger has been a long-term fan of Benzema. There were suggestions last summer he had a verbal deal with Lyon offering him first refusal.
Fernando Torres has revealed he has recommended three of his Spanish compatriots to Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez. The Spain striker believes the Reds need “small players with quality” to finally wrest the Premier League title from Manchester United and would like Benitez to sign David Silva, Juan Mata or David Villa from Valencia. “English football is very difficult because it’s very physical and played at a high tempo,” Torres said. “We have a fantastic team to play against the big teams and we are competitive. “But maybe against those teams lower down we are not good enough. We have to improve that and I think we can. “I think we can definitely be stronger at home. We have some very good players but maybe we need other players. I hope Liverpool will bring people like Silva, Mata or Villa. These are small players with quality like United had with Carlos Tevez and also with Paul Scholes. “They are clever players and maybe they can make the difference. Yossi Benayoun plays like these kind of players and I hope we can bring more like that so then we have different options to play against all the sides.” The former Atletico Madrid frontman added: “It was frustrating but football is difficult against the smaller teams. We need players with quality to try to win these matches and I want Liverpool to sign players like this.” – A G E N C I E S
Owen off to Everton for less pay than Hull AGENCIES
AP
M
Owen may have to take a paycut to play for Everton.
ichael Owen is ready to sign for Everton for less money than he could pick up from ambitious Hull City, reported Sunday People yesterday. And Goodison boss David Moyes is set to make it a dream double by bringing back Brazilian star Jo from Manchester City on a seasonlong loan deal. Everton hope to pull off the double coup – without a penny
in transfer fees – as Moyes works hard to shape a new-look squad for his assault on the home and European fronts. Former Liverpool legend Owen has now spoken twice to Moyes about joining the other half of Merseyside and friends say he is swayed by the idea – despite his initial reluctance. Owen would have to settle for £50,000-a-week at Everton which is less than half of what he was on at Newcastle and also
less than the £60,000-a-week Hull are willing to pay over the next two seasons. Wanted man Owen is also waiting on word about provisional interest from Aston Villa, but that may not come to fruition – and Everton are at a stage where they want a definite answer. A source close to the player said: “I don’t think Michael will be joining either Hull or Stoke but he is too much of a gentleman and a profes-
sional to come out and say so.” Moyes is also close to agreeing a deal with City to take Jo again. He did well in his last spell but did not do enough to justify the £15-million asking price. However City – and Jo’s agents – know that playing for Everton may be their best chance of getting a return on him in the long term and that loan move has a big chance of going through.

Pullout threat

Meanwhile, Sunday Mirror reported that Manchester City are threatening to pull the plug on their bid to bring Eto’o to Eastlands unless Barcelona slash their £25 million asking price. The Blues have been encouraged to make a move for the Cameroon international by the European champions – despite Barca’s claim that they are now ready to open talks about a new contract with Eto’o – but have been stunned by the inflated transfer fee. Eto’o’s £200,000-a-week wage demands have not surprised City’s Abu Dhabi-based backers. But City have made it clear that Barcelona’s valuation is double what they are prepared to pay for a player who has only one year left on his contract.
remier League moneybags Manchester City have splashed the cash again by signing Samuel Eto’o from Barcelona. According to reports in this weekend’s News of the World tabloid, the Cameroon international will travel to Eastlands this week to finalise personal details on a five-year deal before agreeing to a transfer thought to be in the region of £25 million. The news comes despite desperate attempts by Barcelona to keep one of their prized assets. Eto’o’s contract expires at the end of next season and with Barca keen to avoid losing one of their key players on a free transfer, it had been expected that he would move on this summer. But after a season in which

British papers say Barca striker has sealed City deal
The future of Samuel Eto’o at Barcelona will be known this week. Eto’o contributed 36 goals as Barca claimed an unprecedented treble – winning the Primera Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League – club president Joan Laporta was hoping the 28-year-old would sign a new contract. However, City’s recent high profile transfer activity – which has already seen them spend some £30 million on Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz – has convinced Eto’o that Mark
Hughes’ side is well and truly on the up. “The player could have earned similar money at Barca,” a City insider told the newspaper. “But Eto’o and his people think City could be going places and is excited by the type of players they are attracting.” According to the paper, Eto’o’s move finally fell into place after Barca turned their focus on Palmeiras star
Moneybags City know that the trillion-dollar wealth of owner Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Nahyan and the club’s lack of Champions League status means they will have to pay over-the-top prices for stellar names as they build a team to challenge at the top level. But when a delegation from City met Barcelona officials last week they were stunned by the bounty placed on Eto’o’s head. The message delivered to the Catalan club was that City’s desire to sign Eto’o has not descended into desperation – and that they would not be paying a fee that would enable Barcelona to finance their own plans to strengthen. City are hoping the reported interest from Inter Milan in the 28-yearold striker is nothing more than a ploy to force up the price. The Eastlands club hoped to begin the process of tying up deals for Eto’o and Carlos Tevez when manager Hughes returns from a family holiday today.

PUTTING CIRCUS Goydos leads by one after third round of 63 AP, Cromwell, Connecticut
P
aul Goydos birdied five holes on the back nine and held a one-stroke lead over Kenny Perry after the third round of the Travelers Championship on Saturday. Goydos’ 28-foot putt from off the green on the 16th highlighted a third-round 63, tying Hunter Mahan for the best round of the day. “I had a circus putt on 16,” Goydos said. “Again, it was turning lemons into lemonade. Those are the things that are the difference between maybe shooting 68 today and 63.” Perry, who led after each of the first two rounds, had a seemingly comfortable threestroke lead after birdies on 11 and 12. But he dropped a stroke on the 14th and Goydos took advantage, making four straight birdies starting on the par-5
Paul Goydos hits an approach shot towards the first green during the third round of the Travelers Championship. 13th. After a rain delay of just over an hour, both golfers parred in. Perry missed a 5-foot birdie try on 18 that would have given him a share of the lead minutes after Goydos misread the break on a 10-footer. “When it gets dark I don’t see very good, I never had and I complain every time,” Perry said. “I can’t see the lines when it gets dark and that’s
just the way it was.” David Toms shot a 66 and was in third place at 14-under par. Toms didn’t make his first bogey of the tournament until Saturday on the par-4 10th hole, when he missed a 5-foot par putt. It was his only bogey of the round and broke a streak of 45 straight holes at par or better. John Merrick held the lead several times during the round
after making birdie on five of his first seven holes. But a double-bogey on 12 led to a threestroke swing and put Perry back on top. Merrick finished with a 65, and was tied with Casey Wittenberg, three strokes behind the leaders at 13-under. Wittenberg chipped in from 51 feet on the 16th hole and made five birdies on the back nine. “I got in a groove there,” he said. Bo Van Pelt’s 23-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th capped a round of 64 that left him at 12under for the tournament and in a three-way tie for sixth place with Tag Ridings and Ben Curtis. “I’ve got to hit some fairways on Sunday to go low enough to scare anybody,” Van Pelt said. “There are going to be some low scores Sunday. You better have your ears pinned back and go get some birdies.” Mahan, who seems to always play well in Cromwell, shot a 63 to move into contention.

S
hin Ji-yai shot a 5-under 67 to extend her lead to four strokes at the Wegmans LPGA on Saturday. The South Korean star moved to 16-under 200 after three rounds at Locust Hill course in suburban Rochester. “On the front nine, I lost my confidence,” Shin, 21, said of a slow start. “I tried eating. Eat some bread on No 10 and then I made birdie.” Morgan Pressel, a two-time winner whose season-best finish was a tie for seventh in April, shot a 70 and was in second place at 12 under. That was one better than rookie Stacy Lewis, who also shot 70. Cheyenne Woods, the niece of Tiger Woods, missed the cut by four strokes in her professional golf debut. Woods and 70 other players completed their second rounds early Saturday after play was interrupted by thunderstorms on Friday. Defending champion Ji Eun-hee could manage only a 71 and crashed out.
