GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!

Seriously, dump plastic By Sirinya ‘Cindy’ Bishop supermodel

W

e’ve all seen and heard countless reminders to Go Green, Be Responsible, Save the Earth, etc. Everywhere we go, we see people toting cloth bags, usually given to them by savvy marketers seizing the opportunity to use a new advertising ploy. I wonder how many of them are actually avoiding plastic... The other day I received one such cloth bag at a popular book store all nicely and neatly wrapped in, yes, you guessed it, a plastic bag! Time to get serious!

er Majesty the Queen has continued to recover. The fever has subsided and she is coughing less, the Bureau of the Royal Household reported yesterday. In the third statement concerning the queen’s recovery, the bureau said royal physicians reported that her general condition had improved, enabling her to sleep and take meals better. Although she still had an occasional bronchospasm, doctors said the Queen’s coughing had reduced and her fever had come down. She would remain in the hospital until her health returns to normal. Since the Queen’s admission to Chulalongkorn Hospital on Sunday, people have continued to visit the hospital to sign a book wishing Her Majesty a speedy recovery. Well-wishers yesterday included Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, former premier Chuan Leekpai and Upper house secretary-general Suwimol Phumsin-gharat, who also signed the book. Thanphuying Jarungjit Theekhara, vice-secretary to HM the Queen, said the Queen acknowledged the concerns for her health.

ROBOT PHARMACIST WON’T GO WRONG Bumrungrad Hospital says its new Bt58-million employee can do the work of 20 human pharmacists By Chankit Trakoolwilai D A I LY E X P R E S S

re you worried about human error in drug doses provided at hospital? Would you trust a robot to do the job? “We are spending at least Bt58 million on the Swisslog pharmacy robot,” Bumrungrad International medical director Karun MekanonChai revealed yesterday. He said there had been no reported mistakes in the Swisslog technology before.

Karun said statistics show human pharmacists could make 15 mistakes per 100,000 cases. “We decided to invest in the pharmacy robot because it works fast and without mistakes,” Karun said. The hospital’s associate division director Kamonsak Reungjarearnrung, who was trained as a pharmacist, said the Swisslog pharmacy robot could take the place of 20 pharmacists. “We will use this technology with inpatients first,” he said.

DAILY XPRESS

The hospital has between 350 and 370 inpatients per day. “The robot will automatically print a barcode on drug packages sent to each patient. Hospital officials can compare the barcode on the package with the one on the patient’s wristband,” Kamonsak said. Karun said the hospital was setting up a system for the new pharmacy robot, which will be used next month. Starting on April 1, the pharmacy robot is set to handle between 30 and 40 per cent of medicines listed in the hospital’s warehouse. The hospital, however, will not lay off any pharmacists after inducting the pharmacy robot on its staff.

The Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) will soon import the generic drug docetaxel from Indian company Dabur to treat patients suffering from breast and lung cancer, said the deputy-director, Wanchai Supachaturat. The first batch of docetaxel will be provided for 1,000 patients before being expanded nation-wide, he said.

An eagle eye on motorists Those who witness motorists using mobile phones while driving can now submit pictures as evidence at the Traffic Police Division’s website, www.trafficpolice.go.th, a senior traffic police officer said yesterday. Violators will be given these photos along with their traffic tickets and will be required to pay the fine when they renew their vehicle registration.

Free rabies vaccinations Free rabies vaccinations will be provided at district offices nationwide as a means to tackle the disease during the coming hot season. Agriculture Minister Somsak Prissanananthakul has called on pet owners to have their dogs and cats t vaccinated and keep them indoors. The Livestock Department intends to have 80 per cent of all dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies this year.

avkiran Narang and Sikharin Langkulsen were given a once-in-a-lifetime chance yesterday when they were named winners of the sixth TrueVisions-BBC World Future Journalist Award 2007-2008 . Navkiran, a media communications student from the University of Sydney, and Sikharin, an Entertainment Media student from Mahidol University, beat candidates from 20 other universities for a three-week intensive training course at the BBC headquarters in London this June. Both will obtain hands-on experience in field operation and news production, including script writing, producing and editing. They will also get to observe how news and documentaries are broadcast daily. Before being selected, the two winners had to first be tested on their English fluency, news-writing ability, listening skills, and their knowledge of current affairs. After passing the first round, they then had to take part in a three-day workshop led by wellknown Thai journalists, including Pongsak Payakawichien, adviser to the National Press Council of Thailand. Boonyu Khopornprasert, president of the Council for Mass Communication Faculty Members of Thailand, said it was quite tough for the judges to name a winner. “Both of Sikharin Langkulsen them have outstanding capabiliWinner of TrueVisionsties, are versatile BBC award and possess an interest in current affairs – all important attributes for a good journalist.” Navkiran, 23, said she was pleased that every competitor was treated fairly. “I was afraid that being the only foreigner I would be treated differently. But it was very good because they made sure that everybody was equally involved,” she said Meanwhile, 20-year-old Sikharin said she wants to learn as much as she can while at the BBC headquarters. “I want to help improve the mass communications industry in our country. So, I will adapt the knowledge I get in England and use it in a real working situation here.”

Fake and made in THAILAND About forty years ago, only three models of Ferrari P4 were made. A fourth was built by a resourceful Thai and is now a star attraction at the world’s first anti-counterfeiting summit

DAILY XPRESS, AGENCIES

fake Ferrari made in Thailand became the centrepiece of an exhibition in Brussels, on Monday warning against the dangers of pirated goods. The Ferrari P4 – of which only three were made, in 1967 – was made in a backstreet factory in Thailand and is powered by a Subaru engine. It looks like it has just turbo-charged off an Austin Powers film set. There were only three of these ever built. Each is worth several million dollars. But this is not one of them. Knocked up in a garage in the countryside using Japanese parts, the Ferrari was about to be shipped to a European client when police confiscated it. Replicating the original in

every visible detail, the car is a startling example of the genius for counterfeiting that is flourishing worldwide, eating into the profits of corporations and costing governments billions in lost tax revenue. It has also been linked to child-slave labour in India and China.

that cannot be quickly and cheaply reproduced and marketed as the real thing. The result is a business worth an estimated US$600 billion (Bt18.9 trillion) a year, with one in 10 of all products sold in the world now believed to be counterfeit.

Counterfeiting monster Supermodel Yasmin Le Bon, an anti-counterfeit campaigner, posed beside the “Ferrari” to launch an international drive against counterfeiting. Campaigners say the illicit global business has become a monster that is killing tens of thousands of people, funding terrorism and crime, and entrenching the victimisation of women and children in the developing world.

Faking is very easy “This is something that really affects me because I’m in the fashion business,” said Le Bon. “It’s all very well buying that fake wallet in Dubai. But every time you do that, you’re helping organised crime. Many people are losing their lives.” Fake designer labels remain a staple of the counterfeiting industry. But advances in digital technology and electronics mean that there is now little

The London-based Authentics Foundation, which was behind the first “global anti-counterfeit summit” staged in Brussels, said: “Reverse engineering can take place literally at a key stroke, counterfeiters use 3D laser scanners and software to develop the perfect copy. Digital technology has enabled counterfeiters to produce virtually any product known to mankind.”

man suspected of the rock-throwing attack that killed a 13-year-old boy committed suicide in Phetchaburi’s Muang district yesterday. Panom Inthakul, 37, died by drinking poison (lannate mixed with beer) in a hotel

room at the Happy Inn Hotel yesterday morning. Near his body was a suicide note saying he did not mean to hurt anyone but that he had had a fight with his wife. A neighbour and relative told police that Panom had told him earlier that he was in-

volved in the attack that caused 13-year-old Anupong Saipetch’s death from serious head injuries on Sunday. Panom had said he had thrown a rock at the teenager out of frustration due to family pressure at home, the relative said. Police have not confirmed whether Panom was the one who injured and killed Anupong.

Police Region 7 commander Worapong Chewpreecha has dispatched officials to investigate if Panom was the man wanted in the recent manhunt. Anupong sustained fatal head injuries after an unknown man, riding pillion on a motorbike, threw a fist-sized rock into his father’s 10-wheel truck as he drove along Phet Kasem Road in Muang Phetchaburi.

olice yesterday arrested a 50-year-old man for buying stolen bolts from a high-voltage power pylon. Samarn Tongmaen owns a scrap workshop in Bangkok’s Nong Chok

district. Last week, a power pylon in the district collapsed because scores of its bolts were stolen. All five thieves have been arrested and they told police they sold the bolts to Samarn.

However, the shop owner denied any wrongdoing. He claimed he was not at the shop when the bolts were bought. Records showed Samarn was also arrested late last year for buying stolen electricity cable.

A woman was arrested yesterday for attempting to smuggle mobile phones into a prison in Ratchaburi province by hiding them in her shoes. The suspect said she was paid by inmates of Khao Bin Prison to sneak the phones in. The prison bans inmates from possessing mobile phones for fear they could use them to plot jailbreak.

Ripped off in publishing scam A man yesterday lodged a complaint with the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) that he, his relatives and his friends had lost more than Bt40 million in a fraudulent scheme. According to Paisal Kaewnoppa, Tinnakorn Ngarmmuangpak had lured him to invest a large amount of cash in printing government lottery booklets. “After making profits, I started recommending the scheme to others,” Paisal said, adding that that Tinnakorn had stopped paying them early this year. The DSI has said it will investigate.

FOREIGNERS WERE DEPORTED from Thailand in 2005 for various offences

Fake ID on Khao San: crackdown is overdue By Jim Pollard D A I LY X P R E S S

T

ourism authorities must be smarting over the arrest of high-profile criminals such as Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout and Canadian paedophile suspect Chris Neil. The apprehension of Bout, in a sting operation at the Sofitel in Silom last week, made headlines around the world, and spurred a flurry of publicity – not all of it good. Thailand has been described as a haven for international fugitives, with widespread corruption and crime networks that encourage such people to visit here. Meanwhile, down on one of the most popular tourist strips in the country – Khao

San Road – life goes on oblivious to all this hoo-ha. Anyone walking down Khao San can hardly miss people openly selling fraudulent identification, such as shown on the photo here.

The ‘Chef’ downs a beer as he sits by the boundary while playing in a match at the Chiang Mai Sixes last year. Part of the Warathais team from Newcastle, north of Sydney, he has played at the event for the past two years.

Players from over 13 countries are heading to Thailand for the Chiang Mai Sixes tournament, being held for 21st year

Going for Bt400-500

By Jim Pollard

Tourists can easily purchase fake student ID cards, press passes and drivers licences from a range of countries. They’re not even pricey – just Bt400 to Bt500. Bangkok has a bad reputation as a centre of fake identity documents but the sale of these fraudulent cards – a crime viewed as serious in most Western nations – is perhaps the most blatant flouting of the law. Surely, the police need to have a word with these crooks, and get them out of public view. If Thailand cares about its reputation, it should not allow the so-called Khao San “mafia” to get away with such blatant abuses.

D A I LY X P R E S S

O

ne of the big events on the expat calendar, the Chiang Mai Cricket Sixes, is set to be held again, and organisers are promising “more teams, more matches and more fun” than ever. The tournament, now in its 21st year, starts at the end of the month and runs through the first week of April. Some 36 men’s teams and four women’s teams from 13 countries are participating, making it the largest Sixes ever. Thai players from junior competitions will also play. A number of improvements have been made at the Chiengmai Gymkhana Club grounds over the past year.

A new artificial top was laid on the wickets, thanks to the generosity of Superturf Cricket Systems, of Nobel Park in Victoria, Australia, their boss Kieren Blake, and veteran team The Wombats. The outfield has new topdressing and improved drainage, and huge new covers for all of the pitches has been obtained. The area near the Boundary Bar has been paved, with misting coolers installed, and new tables.

New Asian Games sport San Miguel has become the official tournament sponsor this year, as part of their recognition of the growing popularity of cricket here. San Miguel is also reported

to be planning sponsorship of cricket development for Thai children. With cricket due to become an official sport at the Asian Games in 2010, the firm’s support could be timely.

First-time viewer? Enjoy! Sixes cricket is a fast, short version of the one-day game, which even first-time viewers enjoy. Teams have six players, and the batsmen face up to 30 balls (five overs of six balls each). With the fielding side having only six players, there is a lot of open field to hit the ball into, but that is part of the fun as the two teams try to hit the highest total. Cricket is the main activity in the day, but post-match fun is also important!

have been married for more than 10 years now. I ran into an old friend and we exchanged e-mail addresses. We kept up our correspondence through e-mail for quite some time before we started chatting on MSN. We talked about personal stuff – love, problems and later our feelings. So many times I felt that we could go further, like give in to our sexual feelings, but we felt that because of our status and commitment to our partners we were forbidden to discuss this subject openly. So we left things unspoken. Then one day he asked if I was happy in my marriage and why it no longer excited me. While I was chatting with

Unfortunately, at that time, my husband went to my desk to look for something and he saw what was on my computer screen. He was fuming. I understand that he is jealous, but I don’t get it. Is talking to a guy online an affair? I mean we didn’t even ... you know... yet! ... Actually I don’t mind if my husband talks to another girl about me. I would be happy for him to have some friend to talk to other than me. I think everyone deserves their own little space. Either you want to keep it secret or in the open – it’s your choice...

he political career of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer teetered on the brink of collapse after the corruptionfighting politician once known as “Mr Clean” was accused of paying for a romp with a highpriced call girl. The scandal on Monday drew immediate calls for the Democrat to resign. At a news conference, a glassy-eyed Spitzer, his shell-shocked wife beside him, apologised to his

He gave no details of what he was apologising for. A federal wiretap caught Spitzer arranging to meet in a

f you have been contemplating going back to school to get a degree, this might convince you: A study by the Harvard School of Medicine has shown that people with a better education tend to live longer. “Between the 1980s and 2000, life expectancy increases occurred nearly exclusively among high-education groups,” the study said, giving some striking and convincing figures. “Comparing 1981 to 1988 with 1991 to 1998, life expectancy at age 25 grew 1.4 years for the highly educated but only 0.5 years for the lesseducated,” the study said. “Between 1990 and 2000, life expectancy grew 1.6 years for the high-education group but remained unchanged for the low-education group,” it said. The difference in longevity means you would have enough time to get even a doctorate degree. “In 2000, life expectancy for a 25-year-old with a high school diploma or less was 50 years [to 75 years of age]. For a person with college degree, life expectancy was nearly 57 years,” the study said. Life expectancy grew across the board for all races and genders between 1990 and 2000. But, at the same time, the longevity gap between the well-educated and poorly educated widened. “The 1980s and 1990s were periods of rapidly rising life expectancy, but the mortality declines that yielded these gains did not occur evenly by education group,” the study said, trying to work out why.

‘One-child policy cut CO2 emission’ A F P , Beijing

C

hina said yesterday its battle to rein in greenhouse gas emissions has received a boost from an unexpected source – the nation’s controversial family-planning policy. Since its adoption in the 1970s, the so-called “one-child” policy has averted the births of more than 300 million people, who would have emitted 1.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, a government environment report said. If true, the figure would rep-

resent more than one-fifth of China’s current emissions, based on estimated figures released last year. The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency said China emitted an estimated 6.2 billion tonnes of the gas in 2006. The agency said China had likely surpassed the United States as the world’s biggest contributor to climate change. China’s family planning policy began as a way to prevent the world’s largest population – now at 1.3 billion – from exceeding the country’s capacity to feed it. Generally, urban Chinese families can have one child, while exceptions are made for rural families and minorities. The government has said previously that the policy has averted as many as 400 million births. It was unclear why it changed that number. However, the rules have been blamed for contributing to gender imbalance favouring males. It has also been blamed for resulting in forced sterilisations and late-term abortions in the name of enforcement.

portrait depicting Demark’s Australian-born Princess Mary breastfeeding in sheepskin boots while her Yfront clad husband sips a beer has won Australia’s premier satirical arts prize. James Brennan’s “The Official Portrait of the Danish Royal Family” won the annual Bald Archy prize, a spoof of the long-established Archibald portrait prize, which was awarded last week. Brennan, a 33-year-old railway worker, took delight in portraying the glamorous royal couple and their two children as a stereotypical Australian family. In the painting, a seated Princess Mary is breastfeeding her daughter Isabella while wearing a red flannel dressing gown and sheepskin boots. Her husband Prince Frederik is leaning against her chair resplendent in white Y-fronts, socks and flip-flop sandals, one hand clutching a Carlsberg beer.

At the couple’s feet, their son Christian sits on a potty, picking his nose intently. On the ground is a rug made from a Tasmanian Tiger, the now-extinct animal that symbolises the Australian island state in which Mary was born.

Brennan admitted that the portrait, which contrasts strongly with the images regularly seen in Australian women’s magazines of Princess Mary wearing designer gowns, was painted to shock. But he said Princess Mary,

The “knit knot” tree in Yellow Springs, Ohio, a community art project, has become a conversation piece and tourist draw.

o, that’s not a hallucination. That pear tree really is wearing a sweater. The southwestern Ohio town’s quirky public art is a conversation piece. Visitors are taking pictures with the giant, multicoloured shell. Residents are climbing ladders and sewing more pieces on the sweater. Wrapped around the tree’s trunk is a colourful, crazyquilt skin made up of panels of yarn knitted individually by residents and visitors alike. Good-luck charms cling to

the yarn. Family photos, poems and jokes peek out of knitted pockets. The knitting is the latest trend in public art. In Indiana, also in the Midwest, 33 trees are covered with sweaters. In West Virginia, trees and doorknobs get covered with the yarn. And in Houston, artists have given park benches a new wardrobe. The plan is to cut the sweater off on Arbor Day, in late April, but some think it should stay on a bit longer.

Though the state of Thai society looks very sad, people should realise that they can stand up to the government and demand it do its job properly

T

he National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), the country’s central planning agency, paints a bleak picture of a society beset by health and environmental problems. The NESDB report on the State of the Thai Society 2007 makes for a depressing reading. Although the overall health of the general population continues to improve, contagious diseases, such as foot and mouth disease, and serious communicable ones, like dengue fever and cholera, were on the rise last year. Several years ago, most of these diseases were on the verge of being wiped out thanks to the dedication and competence of public health workers. But the influx of large numbers of immigrant workers from countries with lower healthcare standards reversed the trend and brought back some of these diseases in a big way.

Discrimination only makes us suffer The root cause of this problem has a lot to do with discrimination against foreign workers from Burma, Laos and Cambodia – most of them manual labourers. These people are not given access to medical services. This explains why these workers, who must toil away in unhealthy workplaces and live in squalid conditions, become carriers of communicable diseases. One of the most pressing environmental problems reported by the central planning agency was dwindling sources of clean water. Only 24 per cent of rivers and lakes in the country are considered good sources of water suitable for consumption. Many rivers have become so polluted as the result of biological and chemical contamination that they can no longer be safely used. This is bound to happen when regulatory authorities have consistently failed to enforce high environmental standards. There was a marked improvement in air quality in most parts of the country. But Bangkok residents continued to suffer excessive ambient noise during the daytime, exceeding the maximum allowable standard of 70 decibels. The problem with Thailand is that it has made great strides in economic and social terms, a lot of effort has been made to make new laws to keep up with other countries. But there isn’t enough determination to enforce them. It’s time people woke up to the grim realities and put pressure on the government to do its job. After all, the whole point of development is to raise the standard of living. Failure to enforce law and uphold standards will cancel everything that we as a society have worked so hard to achieve.

SCIENCE NOT THE ONLY GOD Understanding the disease, making the drugs available and taking away the shame of Aids will help South Africa Jonny Steinberg THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

E

ven though it is hardly fashionable to regard plagues as a Godsend, the African HIV/Aids pandemic is a catastrophe of such proportions we struggle not to think about it in a religious way. More than two million people are perishing each year; millions more will die if they do not receive treatment.

In our secular age, though, the agent of the redemption we conjure is not a God but science, with a capital S. In this case, science’s lodestar is anti-retroviral treatment, or ART, which, if made accessible across the continent, has the potential to save millions of lives. Great redemptive hope has been invested in ART. The distinguished African historian John Iliffe, for instance, suggests the drugs will inspire Africans to challenge the dire leadership

that has afflicted the continent since independence in the 1960s, thus heralding an era of renewal in African public life. We watch with keen interest as social movements rally around treatment, in the hope that they will elevate African countries to new heights. The healing powers that have been invested in these drugs are medical, to be sure, but they are so much more. ART will work best in Africa only after it has been stripped of the magical powers that have been ascribed to it. We need fortification against the comforting Western fantasy that Africa will be saved by science alone. Drug

What is Arroyo leading up to? The Philippine Daily Inquirer

Children need better protection The South China Morning Post

Some groups are urging President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to quit, saying she has lost the moral authority to govern in view of the many cases of corruption involving her administration that have been exposed. But Arroyo has said she is not resigning and will serve out her term until 2010. In any other country, a combination of corrupt deals like these would be enough to bring down a government. Here, we have protests and demonstrations, but so far that is all. Arroyo must be one lucky president!

Sexual offences are heinous crimes that can inflict deep emotional scars on victims, particularly children. Paedophilia is a little understood mental condition. For all the unknowns, however, studies have shown that offenders have a high risk of striking again, regardless of whether they have been punished. That was the case with tutor Lam Tung-chun, who was sentenced in the Court of First Instance yesterday to four years and eight months’ jail for molesting five schoolgirls. He had three previous convictions – in 1976, 1994 and 1997.

YOUR VIEWS Energy controls don’t work

WE WATCH WITH INTEREST AS SOCIAL MOVEMENTS RALLY AROUND TREATMENT,IN THE HOPE THAT THEY WILL ELEVATE AFRICAN COUNTRIES... programmes ought to heed the frailty and complexity of the human beings they aim to reach. In particular, for men who have been disabled by shame, treatment needs a new face, one that presents Aids not as the core of a new political identity but as a chronic illness, like any other. The environments in which they test and begin treatment ought to be quiet, professional and workaday. Frailty and complexity also need to be more generally acknowledged. STEINBERG wrote ‘Sizwe’s Test: A Young Man’s Journey Through Africa’s Aids Epidemic’.

We may not know precisely, we Americans, what we want the next president to do about energy prices. What we shouldn’t want him – or her – to do is as plain as a petrol pump primed to deliver at a US$3plus per gallon. Some might consider getting down on their hands and knees for this one: Please, oh, please, don’t try regulating us into the kind of “solution” that solves nothing. A more effective, as well as becoming, alternative, especially if begging and asking nicely don’t work, would be a people’s march on the White House in opposition to making things worse by seeming to make them better. Regulation of petrol prices doesn’t work, and, by and large, our politicians know it doesn’t work. There’s no escaping those remorseless facts. Why worry at this point about regulation of energy? The numbers on the petrol pump tell us.

Anything over $3 a gallon is bad news, unless we adjust our expectations or start riding bicycles. Then, memories of past government interventions – the price controls of the ’70s and the lines that ensued at the petrol pump, the “windfall profits” tax on oil profits – make chillier the sensations moving up and down the spine. Regulation isn’t equivalent to “solution” of anything. It’s merely what politicians – those of a certain

mettle, anyway – always propose when significantly large numbers of voters are pinched and distraught. Like now. William Murchison

Give beggars food instead From time to time the question comes up of how to help the beggars on Sukhumvit Road and elsewhere. Many it seems wish to

help but also (correctly) surmise that if they give money they are giving it to the beggar master not the beggar himself. The answer is simple: give food. These people are ravenously hungry, due I suspect to the beggar master maximising his take. Food is very welcome (believe me) and giving it does nothing to help the beggar master. CeBIT expo goes ‘green’ to regain ground DPA, Hanover, Germany

he CeBIT trade fair, the world’s biggest computing exposition, is gaining in popularity thanks to reforms designed to make it more attractive, industry officials said last week. The six-day fair, which this year focussed on the needs of business and government buyers, saw the number of

visitors increase 3 per cent from 2007 to 495,000. This year’s new concept saw the fair divided into three main sectors – business and trade, public administration and new technologies. The new concept paid off, according to August-Wilhelm Scheer, president of the German computing trade federation Bitkom.

Exhibitors were happy and reported good business, he said as the fair drew to a close. “Green” information technology was one of the themes of CeBIT, with calls for future computers to waste less electricity. Computing industry leaders claimed a leading role in the fight against climate

change, arguing that software could cut world energy use. The world’s computer and telecommunications systems are estimated to cause about 2 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions, industry leaders said. Those emissions are about equal to the carbon emitted by the world’s aircraft engines.

The last word in

ASTROLOGY

By Eugenia Last

Today’s Birthday: You may have difficulty controlling your responses or dealing with matters of a delicate nature this year. You will require patience and an open mind. Look beyond to the end result and you will find your path to victory much easier. Work, education and improving your home environment should be at the top of your to-do list.

Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

It will take a collective effort to get what you want completed. Changes at home will be awkward but necessary. Don’t overreact. Rely on past experience to guide you now. Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Don’t sit back when you can take a power position and push for what you want. The feedback you get from colleagues, friends and lovers will help you make important choices. Get your ideas on the table and your plans moving forward. Gemini (May 21-June 21)

Show everyone how valuable you are by utilising your talents to the fullest. You can handle a delicate situation with kid gloves. Love is in the stars but if you work with the person you are involved with, be careful. Cancer (June 22-July 22)

Being hotheaded will lead to trouble with authority figures friends and family. Whatever you do, avoid criticising others. Change is in order if you are patient.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★★★★★

Leo (July 23-August 22)

A deal, an investment or even a partnership with someone will change your life forever. Don’t lose sight of what can be accomplished if you are direct and precise in what you want and what you can offer. Virgo (August 23-Sept 22)

Focus on helping others instead of taking what you can get. Think big and you will make a difference to an organisation, group or person who has not got the creative vision you possess. Open communication will result in a long-lasting partnership.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

Libra (Sept 23-Oct 22)

Don’t rely on others to pick up the slack. You will be persuasive but, in order for that to work well for you, you must contribute equally. Money is in the picture but will require some unorthodox means to obtain it. Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21)

Make your surroundings a place of comfort and it will be easier to work and enjoy what you do from home. A change in plans will turn out to be to your advantage. Someone you least expect will withhold information. Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21)

Don’t worry so much about what others say. Instead, concentrate on manoeuvring yourself into a better financial situation. Change may not be necessary or a good thing at the moment. You are better off working with what you already have. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19)

Al Jarreau

You are in a high cycle that will promote success. Take advantage of your good fortune and do as much as you can while the going is good. There is much to be gained in a short period of time if you rise to the occasion and push hard. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18)

Singer Al Jarreau is 68. Singer-actress Liza Minnelli is 62. Singer James Taylor is 60. Keyboardist Bill Payne of Little Feat is 59 Bassist Steve Harris of Iron Maiden is 52 Actor Jerry Levine is 51. Actor Courtney B. Vance is 48. Actor Titus Welliver (“Deadwood”)is 47. Actor Samm Levine (“Freaks and Geeks”) is 26

Be careful how you deal with friends and family. Someone will take offence if you mention something that was supposed to be kept a secret. A problem with an older relative may become a burden if you don’t take care of matters swiftly. Pisces (Feb 19-March 20)

Do whatever is required to set standards and make reforms today. Someone you least expect will have a hidden agenda that may derail you if you are caught off-guard. Prepare for the unexpected and you will be hard to beat.

What’s so funny?

There is nothing funny about this cartoon really! Look at the job requirements. They are impossible to fulfil. Here we have an unnaturally high IQ and a demand for experience that is unrealistic. Unix has existed for much less than 200 years, so how can you have 200 years of experience? To manage this, the applicant had to invent a time machine to go to the future and back. And since nobody lives for that long, he needed to invent a drug that makes him immortal as well, only to find out that after 200 years, he is too old for the job. Anybody on today’s job market knows that this is just a painful exaggeration of what is really happening. This is sarcasm – pouring acid on a spot that’s already sore. — Horst Baelz

THE SPORT briefly

Just when the battle for Liverpool looked closer to reaching a conclusion, co-owner Tom Hicks restored the uncertainty surrounding the club’s ownership. Hicks decided to terminate talks with Dubai International Capital, which has been negotiating to buy most of co-owner George Gillett’s 50 per cent stake, on the same day that the Dubai consortium said talks were moving forward. DIC made no comment, but a person close to the bid said they are looking at weaknesses in Hicks’ power of veto over Gillett’s ability to sell. – AP

Thai badminton ace Boonsak Ponsana opens his singles campaign in the Swiss Open Super Series in Basel against qualifier today. In the mixed doubles, Thais Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thungthongkam take on unheralded Howard Bach and Eva Lee of the US in their opener. Only Poompat Sapkulchananart and Boonsak’s younger sister Salakjit had to go through the qualifying rounds in the Salakjit men’s singles and women’s singles yesterday. – Daily Xpress

Aussies scrap Pakistan tour Australian cricket chiefs said that they had scrapped their upcoming tour of Pakistan, on the day two bombs tore through one of the cities where they had been due to play. The tour, due to begin on March 29, had been in doubt for months amid questions about the level of security they would have in Pakistan, which has seen six major blasts since elections nearly a month ago. Cricket Australia called it a postponement and said they hoped to fix new dates “in the near future” for a tour. – AFP

ottenham Hotspur, Everton and Bolton must defy the odds today and tomorrow to keep England alive in the Uefa Cup. While the Premier League was on course towards a record four teams in the Champions League quarter-finals (provided Liverpool retained a 2-0 lead at Inter Milan early today), the Uefa Cup showings have been

less impressive. Spurs visit Dutch side PSV Eindhoven today in a round of 16 meeting of ex-champions, having lost the first leg 1-0 at home. Everton need to make up a 2-0 deficit against Fiorentina. Bolton are at Sporting Lisbon tomorrow, with the score locked at 1-1 from the first date in England last week. While all three English clubs are in danger of elimination, Germany

will have at least two sides – from Bayern Munich, SV Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen – in the quarter-finals. Dutch authorities have said the PSV-Spurs tie will be unaffected by a police strike, and – boosted by a 4-0 triumph over West Ham on Sunday – the London club are ready to redeem themselves for the 1-0 home loss last week. Success would also keep manager Juande Ramos on track towards an unprecedented third trophy in the event, having won the Uefa Cup the

WE HAVE TO PUT FIORENTINA UNDER PRESSURE AND PLAY HOW EVERTON CAN PLAY Phil Neville

Phil Neville, left, of Everton hopes to make up for the 2-0 deficit against Fiorentina, whose Pablo Daniel Osvaldo is seen taking a tumble, when they meet tonight.

past two season’s with Spain’s Sevilla. Everton captain Phil Neville has not given up hope that his side can reverse matters against Fiorentina at Goodison Park. “We know we have to go into the game and play at a higher tempo, put them under pressure and play how Everton can play,” he said. Bolton lamented the first-leg draw against Sporting and have only modest ambitions, with the Premier League fight against relegation taking centre stage for the drop-zone side.

vram Grant is clinging to his job by a slender thread but the beleaguered Chelsea manager will be heartened by an outpouring of support from his players ahead of today’s Premier League clash against Derby. Chelsea’s FA Cup defeat against Barnsley has once again raised questions about Grant’s ability to get the best out of his star-studded squad. The Israeli had already been criticised for his passive demeanour and confused tactics in last month’s League Cup final loss to Tottenham. So when Chelsea were victims of one of the FA Cup’s greatest giant-killings, Grant was certain to get it in the neck. Blues owner Roman Abramovich has been a staunch supporter of Grant since appointing his friend as Jose Mourinho’s successor in September, but even he is unlikely to placated by anything less than winning the Premier League or Champions League now. Getafe boss Michael Laudrup is the latest name to be linked with the job. If, as expected, Chelsea see off the league’s bottom team, Grant will hardly be showered with praise. But a defeat could prove the last straw for Abramovich and the fans who have never fully embraced the boss.

Villa on the edge Martin O’Neill is refusing to give up on Aston Villa’s battle to secure European qualification but has admitted that it will only take one re-

sult to wreck their end to the season. The chase is on for O’Neill as he attempts to take his burgeoning side onto the European stage next season and, while never being one for hyperbole, insists it is “crunch time” for his squad. Villa are eight points behind Liverpool and Everton after the Mersey pair’s wins over Newcastle and Sunderland respectively. While O’Neill’s side, who entertain Middlesbrough today, have a game in hand on both the teams immediately above them, he is acutely aware that the chances of finishing fourth are becoming increasingly remote.

XTRA GRANT DILEMMA >> In League Cup final, Chelsea lost 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur. >> In the FA Cup quarters, minnows Barnsley FC dumped the Blues 1-0. >> Grant’s ability to use his star-studded squad is under question.

hailand Premier League outfit Krung Thai Bank see the Asian Football Confederation [AFC] Champions League as a welcome respite from their struggles on the domestic front and they aim to launch their continental campaign with a winning start when they host J-League side Kashima Antlers in Group F today. Currently languishing in 12th place in the 16-strong league, the bankers, who finished runners-up last season, have suffered poor results of late, which have seen them succumb to back-to-back defeats in their last two league games. It is hardly the situation the Thai side would have liked before they embark on their adventure in the continent’s elite club competition. However, coach Atthapol Budsapakom believes his men will leave their poor form behind them when they take on the J-League champions. Atthapol is aware that a win in the opening game was imperative if his side were to qualify from the group that also consists of Beijing Guoan from China and Nam Dinh of Vietnam. The bankers have only one injury worry, in defender Amnaj Kaewkhiew, otherwise Atthapol has a full-strength squad to choose from for the visit of the Japanese. The game kicks off at 3.30pm and will be held at the Chulalongkorn University’s stadium. Tickets are priced at Bt100 and Bt500. Meanwhile, Chon Buri also have Japanese opponents for their first assignment in Group G, when they visit Gamba Osaka.

onny Wilkinson was dropped from the England team announced yesterday by coach Brian Ashton for Saturday’s Six Nations rugby union international against Ireland at Twickenham. Wilkinson, rugby union’s leading international points scorer, was replaced at outside-half by Danny Cipriani with the 20-year-old Wasps rising star now set to make his first Test start. Although Newcastle standoff Wilkinson broke Neil Jenkins’s previous points world record last weekend, he was one of several England players to have had a poor game in the Calcutta Cup reverse at Murrayfield. But Wilkinson was the only one to lose his place in the starting line-up.

Rugby Football Union has ‘run out of patience’ and is in a hurry to probe into England’s campaign

V

ictory over Ireland on Saturday will not be enough to save Brian Ashton’s job and only a performance of stunning adventure at Twickenham will rescue the England coach’s 15-month reign. Sources at the Rugby Football Union (RFU) indicate the ruling body has run out of patience with England’s onedimensional rugby, the nadir of which was reached in the dismal defeat to Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday. The RFU will begin its review of England’s Six Nations campaign on Monday and should it find against Ashton, Jake White, who guided South Africa to success in the World Cup final at England’s expense, would be the favourite to take over. The inquest will be conducted by the RFU’s director of elite rugby, Rob Andrew, four months after the governing body accepted his recommendation, following an exhaustive review, that Ashton and his two assistants, John Wells and Mike Ford, should be kept on after their achieve-

ment in reaching the World Cup final. Ashton is on a one-year rolling contract, something which has been interpreted as sinister, but all the RFU’s directors, including chief executive Francis Baron and Andrew are employed on the same basis. Andrew will be expected to complete his review by the end of the month, leaving the RFU ample time to seek a new head coach should Ashton be dismissed. Andrew took two months to decide the head coach’s future last year, but he will be ordered to hurry things up next week by the RFU which is coming under rank-and-file pressure to get rid of Ashton.

Beijing clears the air A P , Beijing

Haile Gebrselassie, who has asthma, said he could skip the Olympic marathon race because of Beijing’s notorious smog.

eijing will meet its pledge to have clean air for the Summer Olympics, an environmental official said yesterday, downplaying worries the city’s notorious smog will overshadow the Games. State environmental protection administration Vice Minister Zhang Lijun said measures to cut pollution in Beijing and surrounding areas are being intensified to ensure the city’s air is up to the required standards. “After we have implemented all the measures, there is no problem for Beijing to meet the standards. We can deliver

on our commitment,’’ Zhang said. Zhang’s claim came a day after world marathon recordholder Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia said he would almost certainly skip the long-distance running event in Beijing because of the city’s poor air quality. Considered the world’s best distance runner, the Ethiopian, who has asthma, fears damage to his health by running through the streets of the Chinese capital. However, the 34-year-old said he would make a final decision in May after he finds out whether he qualifies for the 10,000-metre

race. He would be a gold medal favourite if he did take part in either race. China has been on the constant defensive over the level of its air pollution. A muddy haze blankets the capital of Beijing on most days. Zhang said he expects that “by June, we will complete all tasks necessary’’ to ensure the city will have the required clear air. The measures include requiring Beijing and Tianjin cities and Hebei province to temporarily suspend emissions from their most heavily polluting plants, which include cement and coke factories.

Ice-cool Federer overcomes Sampras in electrifying exhibition match

W

orld No 1 Roger Federer enjoyed a special moment here on Monday when he beat Pete Sampras in an electrifying exhibition match in New York’s Madison Square Garden. “It was like a dream come true for me,” Federer said. “Playing my childhood hero here at the Garden. I had never played here. It was great. We had lots of fun.” Sampras and Federer, considered two of the greatest male tennis players of all time, performed before a crowd of 19,000, including golfing legend Tiger Woods. “I have messed up the Grand Slam this year,” Federer, 26, said. “Pete is not playing any more, so the only one really going for it is Tiger Woods.” Federer, who revealed on Saturday he was sick with mononucleosis at the start of the season, said he was feeling healthy again. The Swiss superstar had to fight hard before prevailing 63 6-7 (4/7) 7-6 (8/6) in two hours and 14 minutes.

“I knew it was going to be tricky,” said Federer, who thumped 19 aces to Sampras’ 13 and hammered 55 winners to 40 for his opponent. Sampras, who officially retired after the 2002 US Open, dropped his serve in the opening game. Federer displayed brilliant court stewardship. He broke Sampras one more time in the ninth game to run away with the first set in 29 minutes. In the second set, Sampras levelled with solid serving. The seven-time Wimbledon champion fell 0-2 in the ensuing set but staged a remarkable comeback, reeling off five straight games to go up 5-2 and 30-all. But Federer regrouped and snatched the victory in the tie-breaker. Federer and Sampras reportedly earned US$500,000 in appearance fee money. The Swiss and the American faced each other for the first time in a three-city Asian exhibition tour in November. Federer edged Sampras twice, with the American veteran coming on top in their last encounter.

PROM TEES UP KOREA GLORY Thai hopes to put an end to putting troubles as he returns to his favourite hunting ground XTRA A F P , Jeju Island, South Korea

H

otshot Prom Meesawat returns to familiar territory this week, aiming to repeat his career breakthrough feat in Korea at this week’s Ballantine’s Championship. Back in 2006, the Thai player went head to head with current world No 6 KJ Choi and Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh and emerged victorious, claiming his maiden Asian Tour title at the SK Telecom Open. At this week’s inaugural US$2.9-million European Tour-sanctioned event, Prom will once again be up against the likes of Choi and Singh as well as some of the best from Europe, including British Open champion Padraig Harrington.

Ryder Cup stars Thomas Bjorn of Denmark and Ireland’s Paul McGinley, as well as Japanese ace Shingo Katayama, are also in the field. “It’s good to come back to Korea this week. I can still remember how happy and excited I was when I won my first title back then,” he said. “However, it’s a different field with a lot of good players now, so it will be interesting to see how it all goes this week.” Prom quickly began to stamp his mark after that win in 2006 and continued to enjoy another fine season in 2007 by finishing seventh on the Asian Tour Order of Merit and registering six other top-10 finishes.

P R O M M E E S AWAT >> His first Asian Tour win came at the 2006 SK Telecom Open in South Korea. >> The 23-year-old had five top-10 finishes on the Asian Tour in 2005. >> He won first professional tournament as a 15-year-old amateur.

“My form has not been very consistent. Everything is just not coming together at the same time. Sometimes it can be due to my putting and sometimes it can be my tee shots,” Prom said.

ofts Southshore, skippered by Scott Duncanson, edged Malaysian Rolf Heemskirk to win the final race of the twoday Platu Open, part of the Gulf Charter Race Series, in Jomtien, Chon Buri, on Sunday.

More than 120 sailors participated in a race that was marked by extreme weather patterns – from light winds on Saturday morning to a major rainstorm with winds gusting at up to 25 knots. Asia’s largest one-design

keelboat fleet of 13 boats lined up, with teams from Thailand, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore taking part. After seven races, Lofts Southshore stormed home first, with Malaysian Rolf Heemskirk finishing a close second. Thailand’s SEA Games gold medallists finished third . Having won the sport-boat division in both the King’s Cup and the Langkawi Regatta with his Phuket-8 class Raimon Land in the past six months, Duncanson rated this win as the sweetest so far. “This is the toughest regatta in Southeast Asia and we were pushed to the limit,” said the Phuket-based Australian. Sport boats raced seven short courses, and a battle between Kipsan Beck’s Pornstar and the recently launched Big Blue saw both boats hitting speeds of over 14 knots in the high winds, with the Shaw-designed Pornstar prevailing.

he heavily anticipated Gold Cup duel between stablemates Kauto Star and Denman, steeplechasing’s equivalent of a heavyweight championship, is less than a week away and trainer Paul Nicholls will be forgiven for not getting any sleep. Kauto Star narrowly edges Denman in the ante-post betting, based not only on his win in the race last year but his form this term, though, Denman has impeccable credentials as well, having won 12 of his 13 starts to date. Certainly Nicholls, reigning champion trainer having started off his training career in 1991 with just eight horses and £10,000 garnered from his winnings as a jockey, appears to favour Kauto Star.

However, many other sons have failed dismally. Emerson Fittipaldi celebrated two world titles while son Christian, struggling in unlamented Minardi and Footwork cars, never managed as much as one step on the podium in his three-year career. Mario Andretti was a world champion but son Michael endured a miserable season with McLaren.

elson Piquet Jr and Kazuki Nakajima will join the select Formula One fathers and sons club in 2008 under pressure to live up to some weighty expectations. On the grid, they will find two-year veteran Nico Rosberg who, like them, is a boy wonder determined to carve out his own reputation in the most unforgiving and dangerous of sports. Piquet Jr has the largest legacy to live up to. Not only did his father capture three world titles in 1981, 1983 and 1987, the 22-year-old Brazilian starts his debut season as team-mate to double world champion Fernando Alonso at Renault. Piquet insists that having a racing pedigree is not necessarily an advantage. “By the time you get to Formula One, I don’t think it’s reputation that counts,” the Brazilian said. “A famous name may create attention in the outside world, but I am my own person and determined to succeed on my own merits, not thanks to my father’s achievements.” Piquet has the advantage of knowing that his famous father will not be present at the season opener in Melbourne on Sunday as he will be on a business trip. Meanwhile, Rosberg, whose father Keke was world champion in 1982, is entering his third season with Williams. His team-mate will be Nakajima, the son of Satoru Nakajima, who raced in almost 80 grands prix from 1987-1991
