Pressing doubts Pol Col Nawapol Kankhloy, who led the investigation, said yesterday that police had interrogated the three and hotel owner Thiti Poonpinitporn on Wednesday. No charges were filed and they were allowed to go home, but the police might call them back for further questioning. Nawapol said witnesses testified that the clip was shot between 1.30am and 2am on July 14, 2007, but declined to go into details. Yesterday, chief of the police women-and-children division, Wisut Wanichbut, said the Nokia N72 camera allegedly used didn’t seem to be powerful enough to produce such a clear clip. olice have released the three suspects held for allegedly making a video clip of the girlie duo Four Mod in the showers. Owner of a Nokia cellphone Theerachai Mulrat, hotel chef Wichan Pakiranant and hotel security guard Rungroj Tansiri were handed over to police on Wednesday by women’s rights crusader Pavena Hongsakul. The three had earlier said the mastermind was Piyanant (surname withheld), 22, a former staff member at the Ruen Rom Hotel in Khon Kaen.

eena Jangjanja’s colourful gubernatorial campaign ended tragically yesterday with the drowning of her top aide. Teerasak Sitanont, a 32-yearold former reporter, is survived by his heavily-pregnant wife. Teerasak followed a pink-clad Leena to the Klong Sam Wa Tawantok community yesterday morning after receiving complaints that locals’ only source of bathing water was the canal. Upon arrival, the governor hopeful wanted to experience things for herself by taking a dip. “After a few minutes of bathing, I saw a rash develop-
ing,” she said, “I was about to get out when I heard someone saying that Teerasak was in the water waving his arms.” Leena realised that something had gone terribly wrong. “Team members dived into the canal but couldn’t find him anywhere.”
Body discovered Rescue workers arrived on the scene and finally retrieved Teerasak’s body from the canal at around 1pm. Police believe that Teerasak may have developed cramp and been unable to keep afloat. “I loved him like a son,” Leena said. Her immediate plans are to focus on the funeral rites and help
his wife through the tragedy and its aftermath. “I will give her a monthly stipend of Bt20,000, then Bt30,000 after the childbirth. If she wants me to, I will also take care of her baby,” Leena said. Commenting on yesterday’s tragedy, Darunee Hirunrak – former dean of Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Communication Arts – said Leena’s tactics had been tainted. “Suddenly, all the colourful things she has done are being viewed negatively,” Darunee said, adding that she was saddened to hear of Teerasak’s death. She went on to say that the tragedy should prod the Election Commission into ensuring that campaigns stop focusing so much on headlinegrabbing activities. “The campaigns should highlight policies,” Darunee said.

Costly affair The Central Juvenile and
Family Court yesterday ordered Pemmika Veerachatraksit to pay Bt2 million in Pemmika compensation to Dr Prakitpao Thomthitchong’s wife for having an affair with her husband. Alisa, who is married to Prakitpao, accused the student of making her relationship with Prakitpao publicly known following news that Prakitpao had been admitted to a mental hospital against his will. The court was convinced yesterday by evidence that included Pemmika’s confession on a TV show, and ordered her to pay Alisa the Bt2 million plus 7.5 per cent per year interest. Alisa’s lawyer said they were pleased, while Pemmika’s lawyer said they would appeal.

The initiative, dubbed Project 10100, or 10 to the 100th, will fund as many as five ideas, Google said. It marks the company’s 10th birthday. “There are countless brilliant ideas that need funding and support to come to fruition,” Google said. Ideas can be submitted until October 20 and may be accompanied by a 30-second video. The company will identify the 100 best ideas and then ask users to vote on 20 finalists starting January 27. A panel of judges will then choose the winners.

grainy YouTube video surfaced on Wednesday showing Sarah Palin being blessed in a church in her hometown three years ago by a Kenyan pastor who prayed for her protection from “witchcraft” as she prepared to seek higher office. The video shows Palin, standing before Bishop Thomas Muthee in the pulpit of the Wasilla Assembly of God church, holding her hands open as he asked Jesus Christ to keep her safe from “every form of witchcraft”.
“Come on, talk to God about this woman. We declare, save her from Satan,” Muthee said as two attendants placed their hands on Palin’s shoulders.
Praying for success “Make her way my God. Bring finances her way, even for the campaign, in the name of Jesus. ... Use her to turn this [country] the other way around.’’ Palin filed campaign papers a few months later, in October 2005, and was elected governor the next year. Palin does not say anything
on the video and keeps her head bowed throughout the blessing. The Republican vicepresidential candidate was baptised at the church but stopped attending regularly in 2002. A spokesman for the McCain campaign declined to comment. A person who answered the phone at the Wasilla church confirmed the video was from May 2005 but declined further comment. On a visit to the church in June this year, Palin spoke fondly of the Kenyan pastor and told a group of young missionaries that Muthee’s prayers had helped her become governor.

The emperor gods of Taoism The Vegetarian Festival is believed to have been started in the town of Kathu more than 150 years ago by a visiting theatre troupe from China. Struck down by a mysterious illness, the entertainers erected Chinese temples to appease the nine emperor gods of Taoism and held a vegetarian festival to ward off
bad luck. The unorthodox remedy worked and the annual vegetarian festival has been held ever since. On the eve of the festival, a large pole is raised in each temple and the nine emperor gods are invited to descend from the heavens and take part in the ceremonies. At midnight, nine lanterns are lit and hung on the poles and the festivities begin. Food stalls fly little yellow flags to signify they serve only vegetarian food while devotees dress in white for the en-

Mediums and self-mutilation While the tasty vegetarian food and gaily-decorated Chinese shrines make great side shows, most visitors focus on the maa song, or mediums of the gods. The maa song manifest supernatural powers and perform acts of self-mutilation so they can absorb evil from other individuals and ensure good luck for the entire community. Each dawn, scores of young men throng the inner sanctums of the temples, preparing them-
selves for the day’s procession. Prostrated in front of shrines, they enter a trance state, begin speaking in tongues then don colourful aprons with Taoist symbols, looking on as doctors make cuts at both sides of their mouths.
he peaceful town of Ranong is famous for hot springs and natural beauty, but the province is also a historical spot. Strolling around the “boutique” Rattana Rangsan Palace, visitors are taken back 118 years to the visit of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) who stayed here in April, 1890, followed by King Rama VI in 1909 and King Rama VII in 1928. The teakwood palace was toppled from its Niwate Kiree hilltop perch in 2002 and rebuilt in the foothills of Rattanarangsan as a museum. Its six spacious living spaces and bedrooms, a library and throne halls, are all decorated with elegantly carved wood furniture and rich furnishings in the style of King Rama V’s time. His gilded throne is the highlight of the ground floor, dazzling in a wood-panelled room that also contains a mock-up of the palace and a painting of an early royal expedition by elephant to Malaya. Before climbing higher, visitors can watch the full history of the palace and Ranong province unfold on the screen in the study room.

The second floor houses the bedrooms of Queen Saovabha Bhongsi and Queen Consort Saisavali Piromya. The rooms are adorned with teakwood furniture, dressing tables and, fittingly, queensize beds. Skip up a floor and at the top of the palace you’ll find King Chulalongkorn’s bedroom, decked out European-style with antique furniture and bed. The golden glow of nostalgia gets stronger if you lift your eyes to the oil paintings of Ranong’s bygone days hanging on the walls. Finally, the pagoda-shaped octagonal annex offers visitors a bigger window on the history of the Kingdom with a gallery-cum-library full of portrait photographs of Chakri-dynasty Kings and Queens from two centuries ago to the present day.
Gory parades What comes next is a gruesome sight – be warned! Possessed by the spirits of the nine deities, men – and women too – pierce tongues, cheeks and other parts of their anatomy with spears, daggers, sharpened branches and anything else that comes to hand. Apparently feeling no pain, these ascetic devotees then take to the streets in gory parades.

-Fever strikes Bangkok again next week. And this epidemic goes beyond the music, television dramas and films with which we’re so familiar. Back in 1997 a new trend of non-verbal comic stage performance started with “Nanta” (“Cookin’”), which spiced up choreographed cooking routines with simple plot, recognisable miming characters and the universal sense of humour. Its success sparked the creation of “Jump”, which had us howling a couple of months ago, and next week it’s time for South Korea’s latest creation, “Break Out”, a blend of B-Boy dance moves, gymnastics, martial arts and hilarious visual comedy. Again, the story is simple: A
mysterious, ancient sacred text drops into a prison and inspires five desperate convicts to plan a daring escape so they can enjoy a moment of freedom – no matter how brief.
sweet and sweaty performance, featuring the best-choreographed car scene since ‘Grease’, utterly brilliant beatboxing and well-judged comedic slapstick routines”. Kudos to BEC Tero for giving us a show that’s wowed London, Edinbugh and New York.
From nurses to nuns The characters include Gray, who’s been locked up longest; Joker, simple-minded but with a heart of gold; and three women who swiftly switch roles from nurses to cops to nuns. The show, says Britain’s The Stage magazine, “incorporates a filmic backdrop – Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man in a onehandstand split, breaking gladiators in sepia tone spinning at the Colosseum, Hitler telling his party people to put their hands in the air, and a levitating B-Boxing monk”. The Guardian found it “fun to watch”, and the Herald hailed “a

CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere earlier this month, the documentary “Citizen Juling” is at the Bangkok International Film Festival today at 4.45 at SF Cinema CentralWorld. Directed by Ing K with artist Manit Sriwanichpoom and Senator Kraisak Choonhavan – who also appears in the film – it shows how idealistic northern Juling Pongkunmul’s mother with a Buddhist art teacher portrait of her daughter in ‘Citizen Juling’. Juling Pongkunmul ended up lying comatose in a pool of blood in the deep South. The 220-minute movie screens again at 4.10 on Monday. After that, Manit says the film is going to next year’s Berlin International Film Festival, where it will make its European premiere.

‘Chasing Pavements’ Some radio stations in the US decided to ban the incredibly talented Adele’s big hit “Chasing Pavements” after some punk recently posted on the Urban Dictionary website a self-invented interpretation that claimed the song title referred to certain sexual activities. en years ago he rocked us with mellow, sexy tunes from Cafe del Mar, and now Jose Padilla is soothing the crowd with his latest compilation series, “Bella Musica”. The Barcelona-born DJ and producer took up residency at the notorious Cafe del Mar in Ibiza in 1991 and compiled the first of his “Cafe del Mar” series. It’s since grown to 15 volumes. “Cafe del Mar” became one of the earliest popular electronic chill-out CDs. Padilla selected tracks for the first six volumes, as well as the 20th-anniversary commemorative release. His own first two albums, “Souvenir” and “Nevigator”, came out in 1998 and 2001. The maestro is still in charge at Cafe del Mar but also tours the world. The third volume of his new “Bella Musica” compilation is being launched tonight at Bed Supperclub, with Padilla himself manning the deck. We had some words …

There’s plenty of heartfelt
drama in store today at the Bangkok International Film Festival. Beginning at 11.45am, it’s “Paper Cannot Wrap Up Embers”, a gripping docudrama about prostitutes in Phnom Penh, directed by French-Cambodian auteur Rithy Panh. Another portrayal of at-risk Southeast Asians is in “Invisible Children” by Singaporean director Brian Gothong Tan. It starts at 11.30 and is followed by a Q&A with Tan. At 4.45, it’s a gripping look at the situation in southern Thailand with “Citizen Juling” (see Page 9). Things are a bit lighter elsewhere. The gay teen romance “The Love of Siam” starts at 1.30pm, and director Chukiat Sakweerakul will be around to answer questions. Then there’s the musical “12 Lotus” at 4.15. Singaporean director Royston Tan will come in from backstage for a Q&A. Or, you can rough things up at 1.45 with “Elite Squad”, a hit film about a Brazilian paramilitary police unit. One of tonight’s highlights is “A Christmas Tale” at 7.30. Directed by French master Arnaud Desplechin, it stars Catherine Deneuve as the matriarch of a dysfunctional family brought together for the holiday season. ewis Hamilton isn’t eating breakfast before early afternoon while McLaren teammate Heikki Kovalainen has blacked out his hotel windows and taken his phone off the hook. There is more than meets the eye in preparing for Formula One’s inaugural night race. Qualifying for the historic event will not take place until 10pm while the race itself on Sunday begins at 8pm, hours later than the mid-afternoon starts the drivers are used to. None of the top names getting ready for the Singapore Grand Prix has raced an F1 car after dark, or so late, and to be at their peak new regimes have been put in place by team bosses. Essentially, it boils down to the drivers remaining on
