Pressing doubts Pol Col Nawapol Kankhloy, who led the investigation, said yesterday that police had interrogated the three and hotel owner Thiti Poonpinitporn on Wednesday. No charges were filed and they were allowed to go home, but the police might call them back for further questioning. Nawapol said witnesses testified that the clip was shot between 1.30am and 2am on July 14, 2007, but declined to go into details. Yesterday, chief of the police women-and-children division, Wisut Wanichbut, said the Nokia N72 camera allegedly used didn’t seem to be powerful enough to produce such a clear clip. Wisut also doubts the confessions so far, and suspects the influence of a powerful player. DAILY

CATASTROPHE! Leena Jangjanja’s race for the Bangkok governor’s post ends in disaster after her top aide drowns while campaigning By Budsarakham Sinlapalavan, Kornwika Kongdejsakda DAILY XPRESS

L

eena Jangjanja’s colourful gubernatorial campaign ended tragically yesterday with the drowning of her top aide. Teerasak Sitanont, a 32-yearold former reporter, is survived by his heavily-pregnant wife. Teerasak followed a pink-clad Leena to the Klong Sam Wa Tawantok community yesterday morning after receiving complaints that locals’ only source of bathing water was the canal. Upon arrival, the governor hopeful wanted to experience things for herself by taking a dip. “After a few minutes of bathing, I saw a rash develop-

ing,” she said, “I was about to get out when I heard someone saying that Teerasak was in the water waving his arms.” Leena realised that something had gone terribly wrong. “Team members dived into the canal but couldn’t find him anywhere.”

Body discovered Rescue workers arrived on the scene and finally retrieved Teerasak’s body from the canal at around 1pm. Police believe that Teerasak may have developed cramp and been unable to keep afloat. “I loved him like a son,” Leena said. Her immediate plans are to focus on the funeral rites and help

his wife through the tragedy and its aftermath. “I will give her a monthly stipend of Bt20,000, then Bt30,000 after the childbirth. If she wants me to, I will also take care of her baby,” Leena said. Commenting on yesterday’s tragedy, Darunee Hirunrak – former dean of Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Communication Arts – said Leena’s tactics had been tainted. “Suddenly, all the colourful things she has done are being viewed negatively,” Darunee said, adding that she was saddened to hear of Teerasak’s death. She went on to say that the tragedy should prod the Election Commission into ensuring that campaigns stop focusing so much on headlinegrabbing activities. “The campaigns should highlight policies,” Darunee said.

The song “Song Nangfah Klub Sawan” (Sending an Angel to Heaven) to commemorate HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana can now be downloaded at www.SongNangfah.com. Sung by Thongchai “Bird” McIntyre, with lyrics by Nitipong Hornaak and music by Apichai Yenpoonsuk, the song will be available in the period leading up to the royal funeral. The PM’s Permanent Secretary Chulayut Hiranyawasit said his office would also distribute CDs of this song to the public upon request. Call (02) 618 2323, extension 1112 or 1115 for details.

Costly affair The Central Juvenile and

Family Court yesterday ordered Pemmika Veerachatraksit to pay Bt2 million in Pemmika compensation to Dr Prakitpao Thomthitchong’s wife for having an affair with her husband. Alisa, who is married to Prakitpao, accused the student of making her relationship with Prakitpao publicly known following news that Prakitpao had been admitted to a mental hospital against his will. The court was convinced yesterday by evidence that included Pemmika’s confession on a TV show, and ordered her to pay Alisa the Bt2 million plus 7.5 per cent per year interest. Alisa’s lawyer said they were pleased, while Pemmika’s lawyer said they would appeal.

PALIN AND THE ‘WITCH DOCTOR’ YouTube video shows Alaska governor being blessed by pastor to ward off evil A P , Anchorage, Alaska

A

grainy YouTube video surfaced on Wednesday showing Sarah Palin being blessed in a church in her hometown three years ago by a Kenyan pastor who prayed for her protection from “witchcraft” as she prepared to seek higher office. The video shows Palin, standing before Bishop Thomas Muthee in the pulpit of the Wasilla Assembly of God church, holding her hands open as he asked Jesus Christ to keep her safe from “every form of witchcraft”.

“Come on, talk to God about this woman. We declare, save her from Satan,” Muthee said as two attendants placed their hands on Palin’s shoulders.

Praying for success “Make her way my God. Bring finances her way, even for the campaign, in the name of Jesus. ... Use her to turn this [country] the other way around.’’ Palin filed campaign papers a few months later, in October 2005, and was elected governor the next year. Palin does not say anything

on the video and keeps her head bowed throughout the blessing. The Republican vicepresidential candidate was baptised at the church but stopped attending regularly in 2002. A spokesman for the McCain campaign declined to comment. A person who answered the phone at the Wasilla church confirmed the video was from May 2005 but declined further comment. On a visit to the church in June this year, Palin spoke fondly of the Kenyan pastor and told a group of young missionaries that Muthee’s prayers had helped her become governor.

orget slow barefoot strolls on powdery sands and turn up for a fire-walk on glowing charcoal. Phuket, the country’s best beach destination, is once again revealing its mystic side in celebrations for the 10-day-long Vegetarian Festival from this Sunday. Go now and make peace with the animals. Visitors to the island should make a point of heading into town to see a very different side to the Pearl of the

Andaman: a mix of vegetarian food, peaceful chants, earsplitting firecrackers and mind-blowing processions.

The emperor gods of Taoism The Vegetarian Festival is believed to have been started in the town of Kathu more than 150 years ago by a visiting theatre troupe from China. Struck down by a mysterious illness, the entertainers erected Chinese temples to appease the nine emperor gods of Taoism and held a vegetarian festival to ward off

bad luck. The unorthodox remedy worked and the annual vegetarian festival has been held ever since. On the eve of the festival, a large pole is raised in each temple and the nine emperor gods are invited to descend from the heavens and take part in the ceremonies. At midnight, nine lanterns are lit and hung on the poles and the festivities begin. tire nine days to show they intend to remain pure. Abstention from sex and alcohol are also required of the devout.

Mediums and self-mutilation While the tasty vegetarian food and gaily-decorated Chinese shrines make great side shows, most visitors focus on the maa song, or mediums of the gods. The maa song manifest supernatural powers and perform acts of self-mutilation so they can absorb evil from other individuals and ensure good luck for the entire community. Each dawn, scores of young men throng the inner sanctums of the temples, preparing them-

selves for the day’s procession. Prostrated in front of shrines, they enter a trance state, begin speaking in tongues then don colourful aprons with Taoist symbols, looking on as doctors make cuts at both sides of their mouths.

he peaceful town of Ranong is famous for hot springs and natural beauty, but the province is also a historical spot. Strolling around the “boutique” Rattana Rangsan Palace, visitors are taken back 118 years to the visit of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) who stayed here in April, 1890, followed by King Rama VI in 1909 and King Rama VII in 1928. The teakwood palace was toppled from its Niwate Kiree hilltop perch in 2002 and rebuilt in the foothills of Rattanarangsan as a museum. Its six spacious living spaces and bedrooms, a library and throne halls, are all decorated with elegantly carved wood furniture and rich furnishings in the style of King Rama V’s time. His gilded throne is the highlight of the ground floor, dazzling in a wood-panelled room that also contains a mock-up of the palace and a painting of an early royal expedition by elephant to Malaya. Before climbing higher, visitors can watch the full history of the palace and Ranong province unfold on the screen in the study room.

The second floor houses the bedrooms of Queen Saovabha Bhongsi and Queen Consort Saisavali Piromya. The rooms are adorned with teakwood furniture, dressing tables and, fittingly, queensize beds. Skip up a floor and at the top of the palace you’ll find King Chulalongkorn’s bedroom, decked out European-style with antique furniture and bed. The golden glow of nostalgia gets stronger if you lift your eyes to the oil paintings of Ranong’s bygone days hanging on the walls. Finally, the pagoda-shaped octagonal annex offers visitors a bigger window on the history of the Kingdom with a gallery-cum-library full of portrait photographs of Chakri-dynasty Kings and Queens from two centuries ago to the present day.

Gory parades What comes next is a gruesome sight – be warned! Possessed by the spirits of the nine deities, men – and women too – pierce tongues, cheeks and other parts of their anatomy with spears, daggers, sharpened branches and anything else that comes to hand. Apparently feeling no pain, these ascetic devotees then take to the streets in gory parades.

-Fever strikes Bangkok again next week. And this epidemic goes beyond the music, television dramas and films with which we’re so familiar. Back in 1997 a new trend of non-verbal comic stage performance started with “Nanta” (“Cookin’”), which spiced up choreographed cooking routines with simple plot, recognisable miming characters and the universal sense of humour. Its success sparked the creation of “Jump”, which had us howling a couple of months ago, and next week it’s time for South Korea’s latest creation, “Break Out”, a blend of B-Boy dance moves, gymnastics, martial arts and hilarious visual comedy. From nurses to nuns The characters include Gray, who’s been locked up longest; Joker, simple-minded but with a heart of gold; and three women who swiftly switch roles from nurses to cops to nuns. The show, says Britain’s The Stage magazine, “incorporates a filmic backdrop – Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man in a onehandstand split, breaking gladiators in sepia tone spinning at the Colosseum, Hitler telling his party people to put their hands in the air, and a levitating B-Boxing monk”. Adele’s song about a bad relationship was mistakenly believed to have gay-sex connotations.

‘Chasing Pavements’ Some radio stations in the US decided to ban the incredibly talented Adele’s big hit “Chasing Pavements” after some punk recently posted on the Urban Dictionary website a self-invented interpretation that claimed the song title referred to certain sexual activities. Chin up, darling. It’s America’s loss if they are too uptight for your incredible song – or butt sex, for that matter.

s if he’s not already a poster boy in many gay men’s bedrooms and fantasies, Brad Pitt just added one more reason to love him when he donated US$100,000 (Bt3.39 million) to fight “Proposition 8” which seeks to amend the Californian constitution to abolish same-sex marriages. Pitt’s generous gesture is consistent with his 2006 Esquire interview saying that, “Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally

able.” Bravo! (Forget for a moment the fact that he was once married to Jennifer Aniston. Let’s say that our favourite bisexual Angelina trained him well.) But compared to Pitt’s generous act towards gay people, some straights enjoy the most uncharitable of all habits: cock teasing. (Sensitive readers should note that this phrase has parallels with the Phra Lor story in which the twin heroines lure the eponymous hero into their sandwiching sexcapade – with a magic rooster.) I recently worked with a hot married man who was so friendly that it raised flags –

among other things. If he were Thai, he would surely be a closet case with a beard of a wife. But as a farang, he probably belongs to the rare breed of fag stag – the male equivalent of fag hag, ie a heterosexual man who enjoys the company of gay men.

,,

IF HE WERE THAI, HE WOULD SURELY BE A CLOSET CASE WITH A BEARD OF A WIFE.BUT AS A FARANG,THE MALE EQUIVALENT OF FAG HAG.

A love triangle that fell flat was

‘Threesome’.

Personally I can’t deal with fag stags. Not that there’s any risk I will become one of those tragic gay characters who hide the feelings in their hearts for straight men. It’s just frustrating to hide the feelings in one’s crotch. When on earth is it okay for straight men to flirt with us? Some people would say, what goes around comes around. Just as gay men taunt straight women with the unattainable, so fag stags taunt gay men. This reminds me of “Threesome”, a bad ’90s movie about a full-circle love triangle. The straight guy falls for the straight girl who falls for the gay guy who falls for the straight guy. If only my fag stag looked like Stephen Baldwin in this film (like he’s missing a chromosome), my pants would feel less tight!

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says it is time Congress acted to legalise same-sex unions. “There are men living with men, and women living with women [who] build a good life together,” the president said in an interview on the governmentrun TV Brazil. Earlier this year, he called LGBT civil rights leaders to a precedent-setting summit to discuss gay-rights legislation and battling homophobia. The meeting involved representatives from the president’s office, cabinet members and legislators. – 365gay.com

There’s plenty of heartfelt

drama in store today at the Bangkok International Film Festival. Beginning at 11.45am, it’s “Paper Cannot Wrap Up Embers”, a gripping docudrama about prostitutes in Phnom Penh, directed by French-Cambodian auteur Rithy Panh. Another portrayal of at-risk Southeast Asians is in “Invisible Children” by Singaporean director Brian Gothong Tan. It starts at 11.30 and is followed by a Q&A with Tan. At 4.45, it’s a gripping look at the situation in southern Thailand with “Citizen Juling” (see Page 9). Things are a bit lighter elsewhere. The gay teen romance “The Love of Siam” starts at 1.30pm, and director Chukiat Sakweerakul will be around to answer questions. Then there’s the musical “12 Lotus” at 4.15. Singaporean director Royston Tan will come in from backstage for a Q&A. Or, you can rough things up at 1.45 with “Elite Squad”, a hit film about a Brazilian paramilitary police unit. One of tonight’s highlights is “A Christmas Tale” at 7.30. Directed by French master Arnaud Desplechin, it stars Catherine Deneuve as the matriarch of a dysfunctional family brought together for the holiday season. It’s already being touted as Academy Award material. The Bangkok International Film Festival is at SF World Cinema at CentralWorld. Tickets are Bt100. The Rays rallied from a six-run deficit to beat the Orioles and reduce the magic number to win their first division title to one.

briefly Chelsea buy Mineiro as cover for injured Essien Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced Brazil midfielder Mineiro as cover for the injured Michael Essien, who is likely to be sidelined for most of the season. Mineiro, 33, has signed until the end of the season and was able to join the Chelsea playing staff immediately as he had been a free agent after failing to agree to terms for an extension of his contract at previous club Hertha Berlin. – AFP

Tammy reaches doubles quarters Tamarine Tanasugarn and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan won a gruelling battle over American Vania King and Russian Alla Kudryavtseva to reach the quarter-finals of the $600,000 China Open in Beijing. Yaroslova and Tamarine, who lost to Daniela Hantuchova 1-6 6-0 5-7 in the second round on Wednesday night, were extended to 32 points in the super-tiebreak before winning 2-6 6-3 1715 in the first-round match postponed from Wednesday due to rain. – Daily Xpress

Roddick advances; Ferrer falls in China Andy Roddick overcame a Davis Cup hangover and jet lag to reach the quarter-finals of the China Open. However, Spain’s David Ferrer wasn’t as fortunate. Despite falling behind early, No 2 Roddick defeated fellow American Brendan Evans 6-3. Seeded No 1, Ferrer was never in his second-round match, falling 6-3 to Israeli Dudi Sela who is No 92 in the ATP rankings – 87 spots behind the Spaniard. Both Roddick and Ferrer had byes in the first round and some extra days off following Spain’s Davis Cup semi-final victory last weekend over the US in Madrid.

But it was Roddick who was ready to rebound despite falling behind early against Evans. – AP

West Ham to take Tevez case to CAS West Ham said they would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against a potential £30-million fine for their part in the Carlos Tevez affair. An FA-appointed tribunal ruled that Tevez had been instrumental in keeping West Ham in the Premier League two seasons ago when he was not eligible to play for them because of contractual irregularities. A West Ham statement said: “While we respect the judgment of the FA arbitration panel, we do not accept that one player’s contribution can be placed over that of the team nor used as the basis for judging the results of a season.” – AFP

Argentina plan to hold indoor final Argentina is set to defy the International Tennis Federation and choose a small indoor stadium to maximise its chance of winning its first Davis Cup title. The Argentine Tennis Association ruled out playing the November final on outdoor clay at its regular site, the 14,000seat Parque Roca Stadium, and narrowed its choice to indoor venues that currently fall short of ITF requirements. – AP

helsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari is targeting a historic quadruple after marking his first English cup game with an emphatic victory over FA Cup holders Portsmouth. Scolari watched two-goal Frank Lampard inspire his side to a stunning 4-0 League Cup third-round win at Fratton Park. The Brazilian, whose side finished runners-up in the Premier League, Champions

League and League Cup last season, named a much stronger side than expected and afterwards explained: “We have four competitions this season, and I will try to win all four. “It is the same for the players. It will be very difficult, but we have the team for it, we have the players for it. “Last year, they got to three finals and this is what I want. You could see by our team the League Cup is important to us,” Scolari added.

Midfielder Lampard set Chelsea on course for a place in the last 16 by netting his 20th League Cup goal from the penalty spot nine minutes before half time. Michael Ballack was taken down by a reckless late lunge from Portsmouth defender Nadir Belhadj and Lampard sent England team-mate David James the wrong way to pick out the bottom left corner. Florent Malouda doubled four-time winners Chelsea’s lead on the stroke of half-time, slotting expertly past James with a well-struck shot on his weaker right foot.

Lampard, who scored in Chelsea’s 4-0 Premier League win over Portsmouth on the opening day of the season, wrapped up the Londoners’ victory from close range four minutes into the second half after David James had flapped at Salomon Kalou’s cross. Ivory Coast international Kalou put the seal on a man-ofthe-match performance by notching Chelsea’s fourth in the 64th minute. Kalou was given far too much freedom down the right before cutting in on his left foot and rifling past James at his near post. “I am pleased with the per-

formance, I thought we played well,” Scolari said. “Portsmouth is a difficult place to come to. Sometimes it is crucial to score the first goal and if they had scored first it would have been difficult.”

Impressive display “I was pleased with the way we controlled the game. The side is looking good and I have been very impressed with the players since I arrived. “I know who my key players are. I know who is important . You need to build a team around a few players in essential positions for important

games and I know who they are.” Portsmouth have now conceded ten goals in their last two games after Sunday’s 6-0 thrashing at big spending Manchester City. Manager Harry Redknapp refused to condemn his players and instead laid the blame on Germany midfielder Ballack by accusing him of diving to win Chelsea’s spot-kick opener. “We gave scandalous goals away. The first one was not a penalty. We have seen the video and Ballack left his leg in there and dived, he was very clever,” Redknapp said.

anchester City were dumped out of the League Cup by third-tier club Brighton, a day after the newly enriched English Premier League outfit were bought by a member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family. Championship side Queens Park Rangers ousted five-time champions Aston Villa 1-0 after Damion Stewart headed past goalkeeper Brad Guzan in the 58th minute. Everton, a semifinalist last season, went down 1-0 at Blackburn, and Wigan won 4-1 at Ipswich. Man City rested Brazil forward Robinho in one of five changes after Sunday’s 6-0 trouncing of Portsmouth, but it backfired as Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s $370 million team squandered an opportunity to win their first major trophy in 32 years. Brighton keeper Michel Kuipers saved City’s fourth penalty taken by Michael Ball as his League One team took the shoot-out 5-3 after it was 2-2 following extra time in the second-round match. “We can’t dwell on this too long,” City manager Mark

Hughes said. “The game should have been ours and of course there is a lot of focus on us now but there will be ups and downs for the foreseeable future.’’ City midfielder Gelson Fernandes looked to have advanced his team when he turned Jo’s pass home in the 64th, but Glenn Murray equalised in the 89th after Kasper Schmeichel spilled Steve Thomson’s shot. Brighton went ahead five

BRIGHTON KEEPER MICHEL KUIPERS SAVED CITY’S FOURTH PENALTY minutes into extra time through Joe Anyinsah, only for Stephen Ireland to give City a lifeline in the 108th by forcing a shoot-out. St James’ Park was less than half full as Newcastle lost 1-2 to Tottenham. It was Newcastle’s third straight loss since manager Kevin Keegan quit last month to plunge the club into turmoil. Djokovic eases past Stadler to book last-eight spot; Mahut stuns Nieminen By Lerpong Amsa-ngiam D A I LY X P R E S S

rowd favourite Novak Djokovic of Serbia sailed through to the quarter-finals of the US$576,000 ATP Thailand Open following a stunning victory over German qualifier Simon Stadler at the Impact Arena yesterday. The world No 3 and top seed did not disappoint a crowd of 1,500 cheering fans – the biggest so far this week – as he displayed top-quality shots to tame Stadler 6-1 6-3 in his second trip to the Kingdom. He was here for the 2004 edition. The Serbian stormed through the first set in just 22 minutes, mixing devastating groundstrokes with great shot

selection to leave the German left-hander stranded time and again. Djokovic found himself 0-2 down in the second set but recovered to get back into the contest. He broke to lead 4-3 and did it again with a passing shot winner to close out the match in 62 minutes. “I like the kindness of the people here. They’re very friendly to me, just like the last time I was here,” Djokovic said. “Wherever I go, people smile and greet me. I hope to go far in the tournament for the sake of all these wonderful fans,” Djokovic said. “I was surprised by the way I played in the first set. The

“He is one of the nicest guys on the tour and we miss him,” Djokovic added. Frenchman Nicolas Mahut served and volleyed his way to an upset victory over fifthseeded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-4 3-6 6-3. “I’m happy to have reached the quarter-finals for two years in a row. Indoor is my favourite surface,” said the 74th-ranked player. Mahut took the momentum out of Nieminen with his net play to break the Finn for a 3-2 lead in the first set. Although Nieminen fought off two set points in the 10th game, he eventually surrendered with a backhand that sailed long. A Mahut volley that found the net gave his rival a break to gain the upper-hand at 3-1. After wasting two set points,

the left-handed Nieminen blasted an ace to force the third set. Nieminen sprayed a volley long which cost him the eighth game to trail 3-5 in the decider. He lost the next four points to become the first seeded casualty of the day. Earlier, Jurgen Melzer of Austria moved past Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-4 7-6 (7/4), and Robin Soderling of Sweden beat Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-1 6-3. In another encounter, an allGerman affair, Philipp Petzschner beat Mischa Zverev 7-6 (7/3) 3-6 6-1. In the doubles first round, Danai Udomchoke and Kittipong Wachiramanowong, the last local hopes in the tournament, went down to Robert Lindstedt of Weden and Petzschner 5-7 3-6.

Real Madrid’s Rafael van der Vaart is all smiles after scoring his second goal against Gijon.

Van der Vaart hat-trick adds to Gijon’s pain; Eto’o nets 100th goal for Barca in edgy win A F P , Madrid

R

afael van der Vaart endeared himself to the Real Madrid fans with a hat-trick as the champions crushed Sporting Gijon 7-1 to go second in the table. The Dutch midfielder netted twice in the first half before wrapping up his treble on 47 minutes. Sporting had been crushed 6-1 by Barcelona in their last match and Real went one better with skipper Raul grabbing a brace and further goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Arjen Robben. Real rested key players but were still far too good for pointless Sporting and the title holders now trail leaders Villarreal by a point. Barcelona are three points off the lead in fifth after Eidur

Gudjohnsen scored an 80thminute winner to down Real Betis 3-2 as they notched their first home win this season. Samuel Eto’o reached a landmark 100 goals in Barca colours with a brace to put his team 2-0 up at the interval but Betis launched a sterling second-half comeback to draw the scores level only for substitute Gudjohnsen to break their hearts with a late winner.

Bouncing back “We had a dip at the beginning of the second half and we paid dearly,” confessed Barca coach Pep Guardiola. “I must say that I am pleased how we played in the first half and also by our reaction when they made it 2-2.”

Betis coach Paco Chaparro was furious that Betis were not awarded a late penalty at Camp Nou after a foul by Martin Caceres. “I saw a penalty but I don’t want to talk about the referee,” raged Chaparro. Atletico Madrid are level on points with Real after a 2-1 derby win at Getafe. French forward Florent Sinama Pongolle scored his fourth goal of the season to move to the top of the scoring charts but it was an 82nd minute own goal from David Cortes that condemned Getafe to their first defeat of the season. Villarreal sit proudly at the top of the standings after defeating Racing Santander 2-0. The damage was done in four minutes with Joan Capdevila, who gets his fair share of goals for a full back, opening the scoring and Jose Llorente adding another shortly after.

n inspired substitution from coach Jose Mourinho allowed Inter Milan to stay at the summit of the Serie A table with a 1-0 victory over Lecce at the San Siro. The champions had dominated from start to finish but Lecce looked like they would frustrate them right to the end until substitute Julio Cruz fired home from just inside the area. Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half with a thundering free-kick that crashed back off the bar with goalkeeper Francesco Benussi well beaten. After the break, Mourinho threw caution to the wind, bring-

ing on Cruz as a third striker for left-back Cristian Chivu and the gamble paid off as the Argentine netted seven minutes after his introduction. Lazio continued to be the surprise team of the season with a stunning 3-0 success over Fiorentina to take them up to second. The Romebased club scored all three goals in a stunning eightminute period at the beginning of the second period. Stefano Mauri opened the scoring on 51 minutes with an overhead kick from two yards

out after Argentine striker Mauro Zarate’s header from Pasquale Foggia’s deep left-wing cross came back off the bar. Four minutes later, Macedonia striker Goran Pandev pounced on a mistake in the La Viola backline to fire home the second with his left foot and four minutes after that Sebastiano Siviglia won a free header in the box to add the third. Cruz Juventus dropped to fifth as they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Catania.
