TIDES OF HISTORY

Scientists find evidence of a huge tsunami that hit Thailand 600 years ago AFP

A

massive Indian Ocean tsunami, similar in size to the monster that claimed a quarter of a million lives in 2004, smashed into Thailand and Indonesia around 600 years ago, scientists believe. The evidence comes from deposits of sand washed inland by colossal waves and preserved under layers of coastal peat, according to studies published in Thursday’s issue of Nature.

Fault ripped open The 2004 tsunami was triggered by an earthquake of 9.2 magnitude that ripped open the Sunda Trench – the fault that zigzags up the eastern side of the Indian Ocean – along 1,500 kilometres. Around 220,000 people were killed in a dozen countries. The two teams pored over coastal areas in Indonesia and Thailand, seeking sheets of sand that had been deposited in past tsunamis but had been left undisturbed by wind, rivers, storms, animals or humans.

Big wave before 2004 The Thai location was at Phang Nga’s Phra Thong Island, 124 kilometres north of Phuket, where the 2004 tsunami reached heights of 20 metres. The age of the sand sheets was derived from DAILY

carbon-dating organic debris collected just below the deposit. The Thai sand sheet was dated to AD13001450 and was probably left by the last big forerunner to the 2004 tsunami. Norwegian geologist Stein Bondevik said it was vital to confirm what these studies indicated – that it may take some 600 years for stress to build on the Sunda Trench to the point that a 2004-style quake is unleashed. “Inhabitants might consider the benefits of living close to the sea as greater than the risks of a catastrophic tsunami that will not return for many generations,” he said. “Also, it does not make sense to invest in a warning system for devastating tsunamis if they recur so infrequently. “But smaller tsunamis may well happen more often, and a warning system could save lives during such events.”

n adult long-tailed macaque that was shot in the face with an arrow by a group of young people almost 10 days ago has finally been caught for treatment. Staff of the Wildlife Friends Foundation in Kao Lookchang, Petchaburi, used a tranquilliser gun to catch the creature, who had been cowering in its troupe after its ordeal at human hands. The arrow penetrated 11 centimetres into the head of the macaque and had been lodged

there since around the 19th of this month.

Shot at for ‘fun’ Long-tailed macaques are considered a pest in some areas, and sometimes shot at with sling-shots. In this case however, villagers have said that the monkey was a victim of local youths who like to shoot at the macaques for “fun”. Members of the local community of Khao Thamon near the city of Petchaburi said that

THE MACAQUE WAS OPERATED ON AN HOUR AFTER HIS CAPTURE AND THE METAL ARROW WAS REMOVED WITHOUT ANY COMPLICATIONS though macaques raid their crops and sometimes even invade their houses, the preferred way of scaring them off is with stuffed crocodile toys placed on the roofs of cars and houses.

In recovery The macaque was operated on an hour after his capture and the metal arrow was removed without any complications. It is recovering at the Wildlife Friends Foundation rescue centre.

new ethics complaint has been filed against Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, accusing the Alaska governor of abusing her power by charging the state when her children travelled with her. The complaint alleges that Palin used her official position as governor for personal gain. Reports last week said Palin charged the state more than US$21,000 (Bt731,096) for her three daughters’ commercial flights, including events where they were not invited and later ordered their expense forms amended to specify official state business. In some cases, Palin also has charged the state for hotel rooms for the girls.

arack Obama apparently can count on the support of a majority of Peruvian faith healers. Each of the 11 shamans in a Peruvian faith-healing organisation said on Wednesday they have foreseen victory in the United States presidential race – nine for Democrat Obama and two for his Republican rival John McCain. Blowing incense over a sacred llama fetus perched on a bed of coca leaves next to posters of the leading candi-

Spirit supporters “Obama is growing stronger, I’ve seen that he has the spiritual support of Martin Luther King and John F Kennedy to protect him,” president of the Apus-Inka healers association Juan Osco said. “He’s going to win.” Mary Gomez, a healer from the city of Chiclayo, said she has seen that Obama “will win

and he will change history ... he is going to help all the Latinos living in the United States”. The shamans whistled, chanted and rubbed both posters with Andean spirittotems, crucifixes, a statue of a dark-skinned Jesus and other idols to scare away bad spirits and negative energies they said might prevent a fair and democratic election. “We are cleansing both of them so that on November 4, the person that the US really deserves wins,” Osco said. “We have seen that if the election is not fair, there will be another global economic crisis, war and despair.”

Sunset turns into a business for one Japanese city by Kyoko Hasegawa AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE MATSUE, Japan

A

small Japanese city with no prominent industries believes it has hit upon a novel resource to boost its fortunes in tough economic times – the sunset. Matsue, a city of 193,000 people on the southwest of Japan’s main island of Honshu, has set up what it believes is a first-ofits-kind sunset forecast, giving weekly previews of whether there is a view to enjoy. The sunset is hardly a new resource for Matsue, which lies on

the banks of inland Lake Shinji. Lafcadio Hearn, the Greekborn writer who later took on the Japanese name Yakumo Koizumi, was said to have loved the sundown when he lived in Matsue in the late 19th century. Apart from that accolade, however, Matsue’s sunset has until now drawn little recognition in Japan, let alone overseas. “The city’s only industry that is brisk is tourism,” says Hajime Fujii, a municipal official who is in charge of the forecast. “The idea came out of enthusiasm to maximise the use of the sunset.”

The project, launched in August 2007, appears to have worked. Last year the number of foreign visitors to the city jumped by 41.5 per cent to 34,898, with the difference made up in the final months of 2007 after the website launched. On its website, the city issues forecasts for the coming week. The ratings range from certainty to the impossibility of seeing the sunset. The data comes from the Japan Meteorological Agency, but the assessments are the work of city officials, who insist that sometimes the sunset is

Shadow – real name Josh Davis – gained prominence with his experimental hip-hop, sampling funk, rock, ambient and even jazz and soul music, with the likes of Kurtis Mantronik, Steinski and Prince Paul as influences. “Endtroducing ...”, his 1996 full-length debut garnered him global acclaim as the first completely sampled album, made entirely with an Akai MPC60 12-bit sampling drum machine, a pair of turntables and a Pro Tools program. Shadow followed that with a string of popular albums, all featuring eclectic hiphop mixes, in collaboration with UNKLE, Cut Chemist, Quantum Collective, Blackalicious, Zack de la Rocha, Mos Def and Dr Octagon, who’s better known as Kool Keith. His well-respected pieces that set the trend for the younger generation include “Pre-emptive Strike”, “Dark Days”, “The Private Press” and “The Outsider”. “To me, what hip-hop stood for was unity through music,” Shadow once told Techno Online. “On a physical basis, it manifests itself in people like Bambaataa. He was called the peacemaker because he encouraged all the gangs from New York to stop fighting over turf and start rallying around with music instead. This may sound corny, but it actually happened, you know!”

ritish rock band Led Zeppelin will return to recording and touring – without singer and frontman Robert Plant, bassist John Paul Jones told BBC radio earlier this week. Jones said he, guitarist Jimmy Page and late drummer John Bonham’s son Jason were trying out different singers. Plant has repeatedly voiced his reluctance to join in a full reunion after a mammoth one-off gig at the O2 Arena in London last December. “We want to do it. It’s sounding great and we want to get on and get out there,” Jones told BBC. “There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be on board.” Jones said they’re not searching for a Plant replica. “It’s got to be right. There’s no point in just finding another Robert,” he said. “You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band.”

It’s all in the mind A team of Australian and American researchers recently claimed to have found a gene that plays a role in transsexuality. They reportedly found that maleto-female transsexuals were more likely to have a longer version of the AR gene, by a 55.4 to 47.6 per cent ratio, which may result in a weakening in the brain to detect testosterone. The scientists say this “masculinises” the brain during early development.

For better, for worse A newly released study of same-sex couples who have married in the 13 months since gay weddings became legal in Massachusetts reveals the most common reasons for tying the knot to be obtaining legal protections and making a public statement of commitment. The biggest obstacles to marriage are lack of family approval and difficulties planning and paying for the wedding. The 263 people in this survey had been in same-sex relationships an average of 7.5 years.

ven before he became the most gay-friendly 007 ever, Daniel Craig was no stranger to gay fans. He starred as Francis Bacon’s gay lover in 1998’s “Love Is the Devil” and exchanged samesex kisses in “Infamous”. A survey by a British gay-dating website found him the actor gay men most wanted to date, beating Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor. Not long after the release of “Casino Royale”, Craig was asked whether he thought the infamous lady’s man should go bisexual. He replied, “Why not? I think in this day and age fans would accept it.” That was enough to have many of us fantasising about 007 frolicking with a “Bond boy” in the next instalment. Surely if the epitome of uber-sexuality himself turned 0069, no straight men would be out of reach. Never Say Never Again! In fact, it’s hardly a stretch to imagine that a spy would

have to feign same-sex attraction in his career to get a job done – in and out of bed. How many times have we seen sex used as a decoy in the Bond franchise? Disappointingly, though, “Quantum of Solace” doesn’t seem to care for such intrigues. Ironically, Britain’s domestic spy agency MI5, in real life,

now goes after gays as part of a recruitment drive that also seeks to attract women, minorities and people with language skills. This is a complete 180-degree turn from the height of the Cold War, when gays were shunned as security threats vulnerable to blackmail. In many other countries,

Bangkok Community Theatre’s last production of the year promises to kill us with its deadly comic timing By Pawit Mahasarinand SPECIAL TO D A I LY X P R E S S

n American playwright Ira Levin’s masterpiece “Deathtrap”, Sidney, a thriller writer, is running out of ideas. When his protege Clifford submits a far better script, he jokes with his wife Myra that he should kill Clifford and steal the plot. In his Connecticut living room, he actually does that, but Clifford returns for revenge as a ghost and... well, let’s not spoil it here. All you need to know is that the plot twists on, piling up more fun for the audience. The play debuted in 1978 and became the longest-running comedy-thriller on Broadway, but film buffs will remember the 1982 movie adaptation starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve.

“Building suspense means convincing the audience the situation is real,” says director Raymond Possick, who’s making his directorial debut with this Bangkok Community Theatre production. “The focus of the show is to capture the nuances of human nature to bring the characters to life. By doing so, we hope to frighten the audience at just the right time and leave them wondering just who done it.” Possick says that one secret behind the success of this genre is “actors with good medical insurance!”

“You can expect to see guns, knives, swords, crossbows, axes and even a mace on stage. During the rehearsal, you never know which actor may get clobbered.” “Seriously, timing is everything in a comic mystery. When you have an audience on the edge of their seats, too long a pause and you bore them, too short a pause and you don’t build up enough tension.” For the complete interview, visit http://blog.nationmultimedia.com/danceandtheatre.

don’t miss! World Film Festival of Bangkok American animator Nina Paley channelled the heartbreak of being dumped by her husband into “Sita Sings the Blues”, which makes its Asian premiere at 1.30 today. This eye-popping musical is an adaptation of the “Ramayana”, with Sita as a jilted lover. She is given voice by 1920s jazz singer Annette Hanshaw. Also at 1.30, another woman’s disappointment is on display in “Bhumika”, Shyam Benegal’s 1977 drama about an actress. Another highlight today is the poetic, taboo-shattering “Eat, for This is My Body”, about a Frenchwoman’s odyssey in Haiti. That’s at 4.30. At the same time there’s “Chants of Lotus” – four tales about troubled women in Indonesia. At 7, there are some tough choices to make. You could catch some of Thailand’s best actors in top form in “A Moment in June” by director O Nathapon. Shahkrit Yamnarm, Sinitta “Noon” Boonyasak, Krissada “Noi” Sukosol Clapp, Suchao Pongvilai, Deuntem Salitul and Napaskorn Mit-Aim make up the ensemble cast in this time-spanning tale of romance and regret. Or, try “Three Monkeys”, Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s tale of family dysfunction. And there’s “Me and Mine”, Santi Taepanich’s documentary on the Thai arts scene. But it doesn’t have English subtitles. All shows are at the Paragon Cineplex. Tickets are Bt100. Visit www.WorldFilmBKK.com. ‘Sita Sings the Blues’

Crucial T&T Cup tie to be televised live The Football Association of Thailand has paid Bt500,000 for the TV rights of the T&T Cup match between Thailand and hosts Vietnam. There was huge interest in the tie since its result could have a bearing in deciding the tournament winners. The Thais are top of the table after a 1-0 win over North Korea, while Vietnam were due to play the Koreans yesterday. Should the hosts win, there would be a lot at stake in tomorrow’s tie. Association president Worawi Makudi said the NBT channel will televise the match live from 7pm. If the Kingdom wins the cup, the Bt1.3 million prize will be distributed among the players, he added. – Daily Xpress

AFC to introduce 3+1 rule in top event

Anthony Kim has joined the European Tour for next season, leading what is Kim expected to become a migration of high-profile American golfers to spend more time playing in lucrative events overseas. Kim paid US$3,280 fee for membership but will depend on invitations for any event he plays in. He is scheduled to play at the HSBC Championships in Shanghai from Thursday.

Next season’s AFC Champions League will introduce a 3+1 rule for foreign players, it was announced yesterday, and the final will be played in Japan. Each ACL team will be able to field a maximum of four foreign players, one of whom must be from an Asian country. “I would love to see a Saudi player playing in Korea and a Korean playing in Saudi Arabia,” said AFC boss Mohamed Bin Hammam. “By implementing this 3+1 rule, we are giving more chances to Asians.” – AFP

Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon celebrates after scoring in the team’s 4-4 draw against Arsenal in the Premiership match.

Lennon strike in injury time seals magic revival as Tottenham hold Arsenal 4-4 A F P , London

A

aron Lennon sealed one of the most remarkable comebacks in Premier League history as his injury-time goal handed Tottenham a 4-4 draw at arch-rivals Arsenal. New Spurs boss Harry Redknapp looked certain to be careering towards his first defeat in charge as his side trailed by two goals with just seconds remaining, but Jermaine Jenas

sparked the comeback with a well-taken goal before Lennon fired in from close range. Spurs, who had failed to win away to Arsenal in 15 years, deserved an early goal but few could have predicted how it would arrive. There appeared little danger when a bout of midfield ping-pong ended with Jenas chesting a pass to the lurking Bentley 40 yards out. He took the dropping ball on

his in-step and allowed it to drop before propelling a rightfooted volley into the righthand corner, via Manuel Almunia’s outstretched hand. It was the kind of moment that could have broken Arsenal’s occasionally brittle confidence. Instead, they appeared energised by it. Flying Dutchman Robin Van Persie, who had already caused Tottenham keeper Heurelho Gomes to panic with one corner, swung in another inviting ball and Mikael Silvestre flicked in at the near post.

COMEBACK

Spurs needed half-time but after the restart, Tom Huddlestone had conceded a soft free-kick and another devilish inswinging cross from Van Persie was firmly nodded in by William Gallas. In the 64th, Denilson’s delicious pass released Samir Nasri, who clipped a shot over Gomes. Emmanuel Adebayor, following in, bundled both the ball and the covering Alan Hutton into the net. Fortunately for Spurs, Arsenal were also in a generous mood. Almunia should have

SPURS HAD FAILED TO WIN AWAY TO ARSENAL IN 15 YEARS dealt comfortably with Huddlestone’s long-range shot but instead spilled straight to Bent, who rammed home with glee. Back came the Gunners, Togo striker Adebayor tearing downfield and squaring to Van Persie, who rocketed a shot past keeper Gomes.

That should have been that, but the real drama was yet to come. In the 89th minute, Jenas, using one last surge of strength, sprinted into enemy territory and curled beautifully into the top corner. It re-awoke interest among the away fans and when four minutes of injury time were flashed up, Spurs had genuine hope. Sure enough, in the last of those minutes, Luka Modric saw a shot smack against the post and Lennon crunched in the rebound.

teven Gerrard’s penalty kept Liverpool on top of the Premier League after they struggled to overcome Portsmouth 1-0 at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt hit the post in the early stages but Rafael Benitez’s side struggled to break down Pompey, in their first game since Tony Adams was named the manager. “It took a long time, but we had to be patient,” Benitez said. Chelsea, having surrendered their 86-game unbeaten league run at Stamford Bridge, kept the pressure on with a 3-0 win away to Hull, who dropped down to a still impressive fifth place. Frank Lampard gave Chelsea a third-minute lead with a sublime left-footed chip over keeper Boaz Myhill. Nicolas Anelka made it 2-0 after the break before Florent Malouda added a third 15 minutes from time. “After we lost against Liverpool our reaction was very good,” said Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari. Defiant Hull boss Phil Brown said: “It is a kick in the proverbials, but we have got to dust ourselves down and prepare for it.” Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Manchester United beat West Ham 2-0 at Old Trafford. The victory still left the champions eight points behind Liverpool albeit with a game in hand. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was far from satisfied with this display. “The first-half was magnificent but the second was poor. I felt we were going to add to our goal tally, which could be important at the end of the season, but we didn’t capitalise.” Aston Villa went fourth with a 3-2 win at home to Blackburn Rovers. At the other end of the table, top-flight new boys

Stoke climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win at home to Sunderland when Ricardo Fuller got on the end of a trademark long throw from Rory Delap 17 minutes from time. Fulham too pulled clear of danger with a 2-0 win over Wigan, both goals coming from Andy Johnson, the first his 100th in the league, as the visitors dropped into the bottom three. In other matches, Middlesbrough beat Manchester City 2-0, while Everton record signing Marouane Fellaini left it until the 90th minute to score as the Merseysiders ended a run of nine games without a win against fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers.

Molina scored in the eighth, 38th and 54th minutes of the fourth-round first-leg match at Ejido’s Santo Domingo Stadium, with Gregory Laget adding late goals to complete Villarreal’s first defeat in all competitions this season. Two more first-division teams lost against lowerleague opposition – Racing Santander went down 2-1 at second-division Murcia, while third-division Ponferradina beat Sevilla 1-0. Murcia rallied on goals by Jose Luis Capdevila and Adrian Sikora in the 74th and 77th minutes after Santander took an early lead through Ivan Bedia. Cristian Portilla’s fierce shot in extra time brought Ponferradina victory over the 2007 champions. One more first-division team failed to win, Espanyol mustering only a 2-2 draw at seconddivision Celta Vigo. However, Valencia made a successful start to their cup defence by beating Portugalete 41. Fernando Morientes, replacing Valencia’s rested leading scorer David Villa, scored the visitors’ first goal in the 11th minute in the Basque town of

iorentina and Inter Milan played out a 0-0 stalemate in the big top-of-the-table clash in Serie A as Udinese and Napoli pulled clear at the top. Udinese are top on goal difference with 20 points after a 2-0 win at Catania while Argentine striker German Denis fired a hat-trick in Napoli’s 3-0 rout of rock-bottom Reggina. AC Milan are a point behind the top two in third following a

2-1 home win over Siena leaving Inter fourth on 18 points with Fiorentina fifth, on 17. The build-up to the big match had been dominated by off-field issues as Inter boss Jose Mourinho left misfiring strikers Adriano and Julio Cruz out of his squad for ill-discipline while Fiorentina were without top scorer Alberto Gilardino, suspended for celebrating a goal he scored with his forearm against Palermo.

Despite a second game without a goal, Mourinho was satisfied. “Tonight I’m going home happy. I can’t be satisfied with the result but my team played a match that wasn’t good but was intense,” he said. Inter came out firing and Mancini hit the bar with a rocket on just five minutes after a splendid disguised pass from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Inter came within a whisker of scoring again on 27 minutes

through the same combination but this time it was Mancini’s delicate chip forward that released Ibrahimovic, who outmuscled Alessandro Gamberini before missing the far post by inches with a ripping volley. The hosts had their best chance in the 43rd minute as Julio Cesar saved a Manuel Pasquale free-kick before Nicolas Burdisso pulled back Giampaolo Pazzini’s shirt to stop him reaching the rebound.

SCOT ROCKS Murray joins Nadal and Federer in last-16 party at Paris Masters after routine wins A FP , Paris

T

op seed Rafael Nadal, former world No 1 Roger Federer, and pretender Andy Murray all marched into the last 16 at the Paris Masters. Nadal knocked Federer off his perch in August after the Swiss had spent a record 239 weeks at the top of the heap and looked fresh as he swept past unseeded Frenchman Florent Serra 6-2 6-4. Federer looked rustier in winning 6-4 7-6 (9/7) against Swede Robin Soderling – a man he has now beaten eight times in as many meetings, while Murray was not troubled by American Sam Querrey as he steamed through 6-2 6-4 to book a meeting with Spaniard 15th seed Fernando Verdasco. Nadal, who has won a tourleading eight titles in 2008, was never in danger against a man he has now beaten three times

this year for the loss of just 11 games. But Federer had to sweat in a second-set tie-break against Soderling, who threw away two set points before the Swiss won through to a match with unseeded Croatian Marin Cilic. “I think I did well, served well,” Federer said. “I’m not giving away any easy points.” Feisty Scot Murray is still on course to become the first man to win three straight Masters events after he blitzed Querrey. After a bright start, Murray, who triumphed in Cincinnati and Madrid, conceded his serve in the eighth game of the second set but broke straight back. He then flunked three match points but stormed the net to put away a volley at the fourth time of asking. “I was a bit disappointed to lose my serve – but the way I responded was pretty good,”

said the 21-year-old from Dunblane. Also advancing was US 11th seed James Blake, who can still squeeze into the Shanghai Masters Cup after defeating Italian Simone Bolelli 6-7 (8/10) 6-3 6-4. Another winner was Argentine David Nalbandian, who stunned Nadal in last year’s final. Nalbandian beat German veteran Nicolas Kiefer 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 to secure a third meeting in less than a month with Davis Cup team-mate Juan Martin del Potro. If Nalbandian beats his fellow Argentine, he could prevent Del Potro from appearing in Shanghai. Both men will try to spoil Nadal’s year after Shanghai at the Davis Cup final, but the Mallorcan says he has plenty in the tank after swatting aside Serra for his 81st win of the campaign. “I know I have to keep on giving it everything to stay on top. But I’m someone who tries to have fun as well,” Nadal said.

Andy Murray returns a shot to Sam Querry at the Paris Masters. Murray won 6-2 6-4.

Yao boosts Rockets to quick start China’s Yao Ming scored 21 points with 10 rebounds yesterday (Bangkok time) to help lift the Houston Rockets to an 81-71 victory over Memphis in the NBA season opener for both teams. Tracy McGrady added 16 points for Houston, and Ron Artest scored 16 points in his debut for the Rockets. Memphis had a 65-64 lead with 9:06 left to play, but the Grizzlies went without a basket for more than five minutes as Houston took a 71-66 edge with 4:23 remaining. Rafer Alston’s three pointer with the shot clock ticking down extended Houston’s lead to 78-71 with 37 seconds left as the Rockets won their eighth straight home opener. On the second night of the new season, Oklahama City welcomed the NBA to town, but the Milwaukee Bucks played spoiler at the festivities with a 98-87 victory over the Thunder. rad Lidge and the Philadelphia Phillies finished off the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in a three-inning sprint to win a suspended fifth game yesterday (Bangkok time), nearly 50 hours after it started and secure the World Series. Left in limbo by a two-day rainstorm, the Phillies finally secured their first championship since 1980 – finishing off the series 4-1. Pedro Feliz singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh and Lidge closed out his perfect season to deliver the title. “It was a crazy way to win it with a suspended game but we did and it’s over and we’re very excited,” said Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer. “It has been a long wait, but it’s worth it.” Bundled in rain jackets and blankets, fans returned in force to Citizens Bank Park and saw the city claim its first major sports championship in 25 years. No more references needed to those sad-sack Phillies teams in the past and their 10,000-plus losses. “They could taste it just as much as we could,” said pitcher Cole Hamels, voted MVP of the series. For Philadelphia, it was more than a World Series win. It was a bit of redemption for all the losses, the jokes, the slights. Lidge went 48-for-48 on save

chances this year, including two this week. He retired two batters with a runner on second, striking out pinch-hitter Eric Hinske to end it. Lidge jumped in front of the mound, landing on his knees with arms outstretched. Catcher Carlos Ruiz ran out to grab him, and team-mates

Jamie Moyer sprinted to the mound to join them as the fans let loose. “At first, I couldn’t believe it. And then the gravity of what happened hit me,” Lidge said. A generation ago, it was Tug McGraw who went wild when the Phillies won their first title. A few days after country singer Tim McGraw scattered his dad’s ashes on the mound, it was Lidge’s turn to throw the final pitch. Despite low TV ratings and minus the majors’ most glam-

orous teams, fans will always remember how this one wrapped up. Reliever JC Romero got the win, his second of the Series. Manager Charlie Manuel guided the Phillies’ second overall championship in six World Series tries. The Phillies helped themselves by going 7-0 at home this post-season, beating Milwaukee and the Dodgers in the NL play-offs and then defeating the Rays.

“I always thought we’d win the World Series. I knew we could beat anyone in the league,” Manuel said. Once known as a city of champions, Philadelphia sports fell on hard times after Julius Erving and Moses Malone led the 76ers to that NBA title in 1983. Since then, the Phillies, Eagles, 76ers and Flyers made it to the championship game or round seven times in total and lost all of them.

ewly-crowned Indian Open champion Liang Wen-chong has another great reason to celebrate after being named for the Asian Team to take on Europe in the third edition of the Royal Trophy. The Chinese ace had been pencilled in for his Asian Team debut by captain Joe Ozaki even before his spectacular performance at the Delhi Golf Club in early October. But the latest member of the team admits that his selection could not have been vindicated in a more stunning fashion. Liang, the 2007 Asian Order of Merit champion, led from start to finish in Delhi, after opening with a recordbreaking 60. He birdied the final two holes to pip Darren Becks to the title, and Japanese golf hero Ozaki hailed it as “the performance of a true champion”. Ozaki said: “Liang was always in line for selection following his triumph in the Order of Merit last year. In match play, you need players who make birdies – and the statistics will tell you that no

one on the Asian Tour makes more of them than Liang. “You also need golfers who can handle significant pressure and Liang bounced back from the shock of losing a lead very impressively. I’m sure he will be a key player in our bid to beat Europe for the first time,” Ozaki said. The Royal Trophy premier
