GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!

Let there be light, not crime By ML Nattakorn ‘Pleum’ Devakula Bangkok governor candidate

O

ne of my plans to make Bangkok a better city is to cut crime by getting rid of one of its breeding grounds – abandoned buildings. I’d like to talk to the landlords of neglected buildings and convince them to renovate, sell or demolish. I also want to put more lights in dark spots like bus stops and side roads.

THE YEAR HIS MAJESTY ascended to the throne

Boiling over A poll takes society’s temperature, and guess what – it’s hot Most Thais (75.3 per cent) intend to forgive each other for HM the King, while nearly all of us (92.5 per cent) believe the justice system will heal society’s wounds, according to the findings of an Abac poll revealed yesterday.

Majesty will be officially launched next year in May, but this taster is part of celebrations for the King’s birthday tomorrow.

Adventures upcountry The 75-rai archive facility was built in 1997 after His Majesty expressed worries that old records documenting important events in the

life of the Kingdom could be lost over time. National Archives director Sureerat Wong sa-ngiem said yesterday that the Khlong 5 National Archives stored 6,128 items and documents relating to the King’s work. They include rare old pictures given by the Bureau of the Royal Household, among them black-and-white photos

THEY INCLUDE RARE PICTURES OF HM IN HIS LATE 20s. of His Majesty in his late 20s during a visit to Udon Thani. The archives also accept donations of images of the young King taken during his visits upcountry, said Sureerat. They are added to the store of national heritage.

The poll of 2,079 respondents interviewed over the last three days gives a picture of a society in crisis, where peace, love and sympathy are in short supply. Asked how much the old phrase “Siam, the land of smiles” still applied, respondents gave it an average score of 5.77 out of 10. For the question of whether Thai society was a peaceful, loving and helpful place, that score dropped to 4.63. About three-quarters of the respondents said forgiving each other was the thing they wanted to do most for HM the King during the political turmoil, followed by “giving love to each other” and “helping each other” at 69.8 and 65.2 per cent respectively.

Spirit of giving A project hosted by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, the Government Public Relations Department and various institutions is promoting the spirit of giving by inviting members of the public to send postcards with messages of their generosity to fellow Thais to PO Box 81. Events related to the project are taking place from noon to 8pm at Paragon Shopping Mall until Friday. For details, call (02) 610 2376 or visit www.DoGood.or.th. D A I LY X P R E S S

The original Mosquito device, launched in 2005, disperses young people by emitting an irritatingly highpitched pulse which, at 17 kilohertz, most people aged under 20 can hear but almost nobody over 30 can. Following demand for a device that would get rid of all undesirables regardless of age, the new Mark 4 version can operate at a lower eight kilohertz frequency that adults can hear too, annoying everyone within earshot. The new Mosquito Mark 4s went on sale in November at £495 pounds (Bt26,000) each and have already been shipped to destinations like the US and the Netherlands.

SIMPSON FACES 18 YEARS IN JAIL AP

Authorities want him punished for kidnapping and armed robbery

The boy came into the In-Shape Sports Club in Tracy, California, wearing only boxer briefs and covered in what appeared to be soot, gym manager Chuck Ellis said. The teen was scared someone was going to come after him and asked to be hidden. The boy said he had been held captive for nearly a year, Ellis added. Authorities said they believe the boy had been chained to a car seat but picked up a dropped key, unlocked himself and fled when the car stopped. – A P

S

tate authorities are recommending that OJ Simpson and a co-defendant be sentenced to 18 years in prison for the gunpoint robbery and kidnapping of two sports memorabilia dealers, according to documents filed yesterday. Lawyers for the former National Football League star and Clarence “CJ” Stewart filed briefs asking Clark county district judge Jackie Glass for minimum prison terms of six years when she sentences the two men tomorrow. A brief filed by Stewart’s lawyer refers to a confidential recommendation by the state Parole and Probation Division that the two men serve sentences totalling 18 years for two counts of kidnapping with a

d e a d l y weapon and two counts of armed robbery. Kidnapping convictions call for mandatory Simpson prison time, and each count carries a six-year sentence. Each armed robbery charge carries three-year sentences. “We would like the judge to take our recommendation to heart and sentence [Simpson] to the minimum six years,” Simpson lawyer Gabriel Grasso said after filing his brief in response to the recommendation. Glass is not bound by the report and could sentence each

of the men to the maximum term of life in prison. The brief filed by Stewart’s lawyer, Brent Bryson, asked the judge to disregard the state’s recommendation and that Stewart “be sentenced to the minimum”. The brief indicates that the state is recommending concurrent terms for the other charges for which the two men were convicted, including conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and coercion. A jury on October 3 convicted Simpson and Stewart of all 12 charges against them in the September 13, 2007, confrontation with the two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas casino hotel room. Simpson maintained he went to the room to retrieve personal items, family photos and sports mementos that had been stolen from him years earlier.

isitors to Museum Siam will get to peek behind – and maybe even wear – the makeup of Japan’s mysterious kabuki theatre from next week. On Monday, a 90-minute demonstration by Japanese stars will kick off with Bando Kotoji gliding into a sanbasou , the traditional opening dance. After five minutes he’ll leave the stage to Yoshiko Takahashi, whose talk “What is Kabuki?” will give listeners an insight into the extravagant expressions and rambling stories of this 400-year-old theatre of the common folk. Then visitors will get to witness how kabuki performers put on their make up, before being offered the chance to try a few dance moves for themselves. Finally comes the highlight, a performance of the classic kabuki play “Yoshino Yama” (“Mount Yoshino”).

And no one is happier than Jaa’s mentor, Panna Ritthikrai. “Seeing them in the same movie is like a dream come true. I’m so glad Jaa ask Diaw to join the crew,” says Panna, who joined the rookie director on the set after problems with budget overruns. The two action stars attended Maha Sarakham Physical Education College, so they recognise each other’s style. “Some actors worry about their safety when they work on fight scenes but when Jaa and Diaw are doing a scene, you can sense the confidence. That makes for really great action,” says Panna.

The handsome blokes in the Danish band Michael Learns to Rock probably think their fans are a little too lucky. Not only was their latest of many, many concerts in Thailand the last show possible by any foreign artist before the airport shut down, they got stuck here afterward!

The Danes had to join the legions of souvenir-toting tourists searching for alternative exits. By this time, of course, the Tourism Authority is printing up new posters that say, “Thailand: So good you’ll never leave!” The flip side of being an inadvertent tourist trap is that a lot of Thais are stuck overseas, unable to fly home. Actor Akara “Golf” Amarttayakul is enjoying India a lot longer than he’d planned. He went for a film festival screening his “Muay Thai Chaiya”. That ended ages ago.

EXHIBITION

Arresting

death

After unwrapping mankind’s struggles to halt time’s tide, ‘Perishable Beauty’ frees us to go with the flow By Khetsirin Pholdhampalit D A I LY X P R E S S

A banquet is left to rot to reflect the inescapable truth of impermanence.

mpermanence is a universal fact of life. But instead of taking a “let it be” approach, the exhibition “Perishable Beauty” at the Thailand Creative and Design Centre is delving into the many ways humans struggle to conquer – and even benefit from – decay. Introducing the truth that everything’s subject to change is a glass cabinet in which a banquet has been left to rot, a symbol of our fruitless attempts to forget the ultimate dominance of death. But our denial of decay reaches even beyond death, as shown in exhibits dealing with everything from mummification to cloning to the making of ornaments from a deceased beloved’s ashes. Elsewhere, a mock-up of a cosmeticsurgery lab reflects people’s efforts to carve eternal youth from ageing flesh. Who do you want to look like? Marilyn Monroe, Paris Hilton, or a South Korean superstar? We’re told that 11 million cosmetic-surgery procedures were performed in the US in 2006. In one room, a blossoming cherry tree stands beside a glass case of fluttering banknotes. Its symbol of how transience can be profitable is rooted in Japan’s sakura season, which has become a tourist attraction that generates huge windfalls of foreign cash. Visitors then jump into a flower market to sniff out how keeping petals at peak freshness through clever time management has made Holland and the UAE the world’s top exporters.

DAILY XPRESS/ EKKARAT SUKPETCH

Transient cherry-tree blossom can be turned into cash. This part of the exhibition may get Thai minds wandering to pak klong talad, and wondering if similar procedures could make the famous market a leading exporter of tropical flowers. Before leaving, check out the display of a lemon and its last drop of juice. A metaphor for business opportunities that have to be sucked up before they run dry, it should get your creative juices flowing even as the economy and politics sour.

XTRA O N LY PA S S I N G T H R O U G H >> ‘Perishable Beauty’ continues until February 22. The Thailand Creative and Design Centre, on the sixth floor of the Emporium, is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10.30am to 9pm. >> Call (02) 664 8448 or visit www.TCDC.or.th.

Serious about cereal No matter how small your breakfast, it’s still the most important meal of the day. Convenient Western-style cereal has gained popularity in Thailand, and it’s more nutritious, with fewer calories, than rice with a side dish. Mahidol University Assistant Professor Rewadee Chongsuwat, who works in the Public Health Faculty’s Department of Nutrition, notes that cereals have got even better with different flavours and nutritional values. There are now cereals with low sugar, fat and sodium content, and with more fibre. They might also include whole grains, believed to be beneficial, especially for young children. Whole grains are a good source of fibre, vitamins, calcium, iron and antioxidants. Per serving, sodium shouldn’t exceed 600mg and sugar 12.5 grams. Cereal with milk should be considered an alternative, since it generally offers 120 to 126mg of sodium and 9.7 to 9.9g of sugar per serving. Source: Nestle Thai

The body’s daily requirement for vitamin D is relatively low. It’s naturally produced in the body. Exposure to sunshine for about 10 to 15 minutes at least three times a week is enough to meet your body’s requirement. The vitamin can easily be found in foods like egg, beef and liver, mushrooms, catfish, tuna, sardines and eel. Vitamin D deficiency decreases the calcium absorption, resulting in weak bones. Such deficiencies often occur in women who don’t want to brave the sunlight, urban children who lack outdoor activities, and mothers who have many children or who breastfeed for overly long periods. I’ve never heard of anyone getting too much vitamin D from the sun, although too much can burn the skin and may cause cancer. Over-consumption of vitamin D can be dangerous, as it stimulates excessive calcium absorption, resulting in kidney stones. Obtaining vitamin D naturally – through food and exposure to sunlight–should be enough for most people.

THE SPORT briefly

Spanish first division club Valencia is on the verge of bankruptcy. The club must pay ¤50 million before December 31, and only a loan from the Bancaja bank can save it. The club was not immediately available for comment on the report. – AFP

Klinsmann wants Podolski to fight Bayern Munich coach Juergen Klinsmann wants striker Lukas Podolski to stay and fight for his place rather than leave the German champions. Klinsmann said the 23-year-old striker had it easier with the German national side than at Bayern where he has failed to establish himself in his third season at the club. “The difference is that he has recently been a first choice with the national team which has allowed him to take things in a more relaxed way,” Klinsmann said. “Now he is at a top European club which actually has to have four or five strikers fighting for a place. It is an internal battle with which he is having difficulties.” – DPA

Real Madrid sign Ajax’s Huntelaar Spanish champions Real Madrid, plagued by injuries and poor form this season, have signed Dutch international striker

Nadal will break down: Sampras At 22 and with five Grand Slam titles already, Rafael Nadal may yet eclipse both Pete Sampras and Roger Federer’s haul, but Sampras fears that the Spaniard’s hard-hitting style will take its toll on his body. “The amount of work he has to do to stay on top and stay healthy - I think that’s where Roger has a bit of an advantage because it takes a lot less energy for Roger to stay on top than Nadal. “Rafa puts so much effort into each point that eventually something will break. There’s a certain grind that he goes through, unlike Roger who is a lot more fluid and wins matches a lot easier.” – AFP

Joe Thornton had a goal and three assists in San Jose’s fantastic first period. The Sharks looked sharp throughout the game.

MCDONALD – LOVIN’ IT

Troy Murphy was in the right place at the right time. Murphy made the game-winning tip-in at the buzzer, and the Indiana Pacers overcame a 16point fourth-quarter deficit to stun the leagueleading Los Angeles Lakers 118-117. “We know that with our style of play we can come back on teams and no lead is too big for us,” said Murphy, who finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds. – DPA

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Ajax for ¤27 million. The 25-year-old is expected to replace another Dutchman, Ruud van Nistelrooy, who will miss the rest of the season after a knee Huntelaar operation. “Huntelaar is now officially a new player at Real Madrid,” the club said. Huntelaar is currently out of action due to an ankle injury and is not expected to be fit again until the middle of this month. – AFP

rsene Wenger cast doubt over the future of Arsenal’s young forwards after criticising his off-form attackers as a series of missed chances enabled Burnley to claim a famous 2-0 League Cup at Turf Moor. Two goals from Scottish midfielder Kevin McDonald, who rejected moves to Liverpool and Celtic to join Burnley from Dundee in July, secured the Clarets’ place in the semi-finals. But a catalogue of poor finishes, most notably by Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner, led to Arsenal’s quarter-final exit and manager Wenger admitted that too many of his forwards underperformed. “We played quite well, but we

had six one versus ones and lost 2-0, so that sums it up quite well,” he said. “We just did not have the right focus in front of goal and that made the difference. We lost a game we should never have lost. “We had plenty of chances but when you do not score, you have to ask why. You can praise their keeper but also question your own strikers. “Many of my players were not fazed by the game, though, and that is a positive from the game. “So many of them gave absolutely everything, but in front of goal, you have to be much more clinical than we were and I think we were a bit naive in taking our chances. “Had we scored at any time,

then the complexion of the whole tie would have been different, but it was always us chasing the game and them playing on the counter-attack. That’s the easiest way to deal with the game.” Burnley proved too energetic and hungry for Arsenal and the Championship club deservedly added Arsenal’s scalp to those of Chelsea and Fulham, who they defeated in previous rounds. Manager Owen Coyle, whose team will learn their semi-final opponents in Saturday’s draw, now insists that his team can go all the way to final. He said: “We will enjoy the semi-finals. It doesn’t matter who we get. We’ve got a great chance. There was a lot of talk of Arsenal and the young players they have, but we’ve shown that we have some good young players ourselves.”

Burnley matched Arsenal’s attacking intent with their own, however, and Coyle’s team pushed forward in search of the second goal that would as good as seal the game. It came on 57 minutes when Eagles’s quick throw-in released McDonald in the Arsenal penalty area. Manchester United had been waiting for this for 40 years,” Ferguson said. “His award is beyond all possible dispute. He is only 23 years old. His best years are ahead of him.” Ferguson’s assistant for much of Ronaldo’s time at Old Trafford was his fellow Portuguese Carlos Queiroz, now manager of the Portugual national team. “I am really proud for his achievement, which was his dream and ambition,” Queiroz said. The only dissenting voice came from across Milan, where Jose Mourinho, who had several run-ins with Ronaldo during his time at Chelsea, claimed the award should have gone to one of his Inter Milan stars. “I have no praise for Ronaldo,” Mourinho said: “I would have preferred one of my own foreign players to have won the Ballon d’Or.”

But the Portuguese playmaker is determined to make his star shine even brighter in 2009 after beating Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres to the Ballon d’Or this week. “I always play with pressure because people always expect a lot from me and I don’t think that will change,” Ronaldo said. iverpool manager Rafael Benitez has backed Robbie Keane to come good despite his latest flop against West Ham. Keane was substituted for the 15th time since his £20 million move from Tottenham in pre-season as Liverpool were held to a goalless draw at Anfield on Monday. But Benitez is convinced the real Keane, who starred for Tottenham, will emerge sooner rather than later. “Robbie is a better player than the one we are seeing now,” he said. “We know what kind of player Robbie Keane is. He needs people around him to pass the ball well. “I believe he will be okay, he will score more if we create chances for him. “But if that does not happen we have to use players with different qualities to open up the game.” Keane has managed just four goals this term and only completed 90 minutes on three occasions in 22 appearances, yet Benitez has told the forward to keeping working and the goals will come. “Robbie does get disappointed when things are not going his way. He is a worker, but he can improve,” he said.

Alonso threatens to quit Formula One if mandarins muzzle him with uniform engine Fernando Alonso will consider quitting Formula One if the sport follows through with plans for a standard engine. Formula One’s governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), said in October that it intends to introduce a uniform engine for all teams from 2010 in an effort to cut costs. It has since launched a tender for bids to provide the engine, although this is only

one of three options being considered. “If they approved that, it would be the last straw,” said Alonso. “It would be time to think about retirement.” Ferrari, who could well figure in Alonso’s future, and Toyota have already said they will consider pulling out if standard engines are imposed. eal Madrid's injuryplagued Mali international Mahamadou Diarra will have surgery on his right knee and could be sidelined for between two to six months, sports daily Marca reported yesterday. The 27-year-old defensive midfielder underwent an X-ray on Tuesday which confirmed his knee injury had relapsed, the newspaper said. He will now undergo an arthroscopic examination of his knee joints to determine the seriousness of the injury and the length of his absence from the pitch, which could last until the end of the season, Marca said.

ometimes a team’s greatest strength can be its greatest weakness.Nicolas Anelka has scored 12 Premier League goals for Chelsea this season, making him the top-scorer in the division by four. But a curious fact about the distribution of those goals perhaps reveals a greater truth about Chelsea’s true strength this season, and explains their comparatively disappointing home form. Two possible explanations present themselves. Perhaps Anelka, who is so noted for his moodiness that he is nicknamed “Le Sulk”, does not have the mental strength to score the goals that really matter. Or perhaps the issue is tactical. “The classic Anelka goal,” Sam Allardyce, who was Anelka’s manager at Bolton, said, “is him running at defenders from outside the box, or playing the ball through the defence for him to run onto. “He’s the master of one v ones with the goalkeeper.” Allardyce maintains that Anelka improved and became more of a scorer of “goalscorer’s goals” during his time at the Reebok, but the France striker is still at his most effective if there is space behind the defence. “You have to play differently with Anelka to how you would play with Didier Drogba,” he

In other words, he needs the game to be stretched, as it is after Chelsea have taken a lead and the opposition are chasing the game, operating with a higher defensive line. In the 1-1 draw against Bordeaux in the Champions League, Anelka did score the opening goal, but it served only to strengthen the theory. Bordeaux had stifled their opponents and, with a little over an hour played, were beginning to believe they might actually win the game. They pushed up, and were caught out by midfielder Frank Lampard playing the ball in behind them for Anelka to run onto. Defend deep against Chelsea,

though, and those chances do not materialise. That, of course, is precisely what most away teams try to do at Stamford Bridge – whereas at home they still feel some onus to attack. And that is why Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle United in the Premier League, and Roma and CFR Cluj in the Champion League, have been able, to some extent, to frustrate Chelsea. It is also telling that of Chelsea’s 10 Premier League wins, only one has been by a single goal. They are great when they go ahead, and Anelka can tear the opposition apart on the break; less effective in tight games.

Ellington kept his nerve to slot home in injury-time after Andy Griffin had been penalised for handball by referee Rob Styles. 150M FOR SAINT IKER! Manchester City offers staggering sum for goalie

Ronnie almost went

AFP, Madrid

eal Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has rejected a move to big-spending Manchester City, which was ready to pay a world record ¤150 million for the Spanish international, Spanish media said. Under the deal, Casillas would have received ¤13 million a year to play for the English Premier League side, bought in September by the Abu Dhabi United Group. Private Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, which is usually well-informed, said Manchester City made the written offer to the player's agent Luis Garcia Abad. It was not forwarded to Real as Casillas immediately rejected it, the radio said. The offer of ¤150 million would dwarf the current world record ¤76 million paid by Real

Casillas, 27, nicknamed Saint Iker in Spain, is one of the world's best goalkeepers and played a leading role in Spain's Euro 2008 victory. Ronaldinho has admitted he came tantalisingly close to joining Manchester City over the summer. The Brazilian was tracked by the Blues for the majority of pre-season, with speculation suggesting the Premier League outfit were favourites to land the former Fifa World Player of the Year. They would ultimately lose out to Italian giants AC Milan, but Ronaldinho has revealed that a move to England did appeal to him. “My brother spoke to Manchester City many times,” the 28-year-old said. “Their project is the kind that would interest any player - they could soon be among the best sides in England. “Lots of brilliant players are heading in their direction and yes, my brother looked properly at their offer. But Silvio Berlusconi [Milan owner] had been saying for years that he would like to sign me and I felt in the end that it was the right time to say yes.”

For Argo crew,King’s Cup is just educational

Argo, the schooner with a crew of 22 students, leads the Classic Class after two races.

For many sailors, the King’s Cup Regatta is fun, for some it’s deadly serious, but for the crew of the yacht Argo, it’s educational. The crew, all hailing from the US, is manning Argo as part of an accredited college course. Argo is owned by Seamester, who specialise in delivering “unique educational journeys” during which students spend their entire semester at sea, sailing

around the globe. Built near Bangkok by Marsun, Argo has seen nearly 200 students come aboard and have the opportunity to take her helm since her launch in Thailand in 2006. So while her crew may not be the most experienced, Argo herself has certainly done a few miles. In fact, the current crew have been sailing together for almost three months and

Seamester CEO James Stoll, who is on board Argo for the King’s Cup Regatta, has no qualms about their ability to sail. Argo normally sails with a crew of 22 students and seven members of staff, but for the King’s Cup this year there are 22 students and six staff on board. While sailing might be some people’s idea of a holiday, for the students it is actually a part of their college course.
