ompeting in a beauty pageant isn’t as easy as most people think. With so many people watching for mistakes, we have to be disciplined in what we do all the time. One mistake could ruin it all. But I love pageants. The situation is totally different from real life, but I still manage to be myself.

he Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yesterday warned that eyeliners illegally laced with engine lubricant could cause skin irritation, and even cancer in the long term. FDA officials were launching nationwide random searches for such dangerous cosmetics, and their manufacturers and distributors faced up to one year in jail and/or a Bt60,000 fine if caught, said FDA chief Pipat Yingseri.

Sold roadside The move comes after Culture Watch Office director Ladda Tangsupachai claimed the eyeliners were being sold at markets and roadside stalls. Since it is not a cosmetic that requires FDA approval for manufacture or import, random searches were the best way to protect consumers, said Pipat. He added that the public should be vigilant too, and call the hotline number 1556 if they came across suspicious products. Wearing heavy eyeliner is a trend that’s spread from South Korea and Japan to fashion-conscious Thai youngsters, who were earlier warned about another craze – so-called “Big Eye” contact lenses that can cause blindness. fter having been in the hands of anti-government protesters for months, the once-imposing Government House is going to need a “Big Cleaning Day” to restore its stately grandeur. “We’ve designated December 26 as ‘Big Cleaning Day’,” Loyleuan Bunnag announced yesterday in his capacity as the deputy secretary general to the Prime Minister. He believed the day would also be a good opportunity for Government House regulars to get back together after a long time away. “I mean officials and press members,” Loyleuan said.

He added that all agencies with permanent offices inside the Government House compound would be invited to take part in the clean-up, which would include repainting. Hundreds of cleaners, policemen and officials have already started tidying up at Government House after the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD)

ended its siege here last week. The lawn in front of the Thai Ku Fah building inside the compound will get a facelift too. So far, only the officials from the Secretariat of the Prime Minister have returned to their permanent office at Government House. Other agencies, such as the Secretariat of the Cabinet, the Office of the Prime Minister’s Permanent Secretary, and the National Security Office, are still working from temporary offices elsewhere. Ju, a food vendor who had run a stall at Government House for more than 30 years, yesterday said, “I am so glad that I can return – this is like my second home”. Loyleuan said a merit-making ceremony would be held to mark a return to peace.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) yesterday launched a campaign, using double-decker buses, to get as much as 70 per cent of city residents to cast ballots for a new governor on January 11. City clerk Pongsak Semsan told the campaign launch, which featured celebrities such as actress Woranuch “Noon” Wongsawan, that the city needed to engage voters in new ways and create awareness of the importance of the gubernatorial election. With a door-to-door public relations strategy in place alongside media coverage of the election, the city hopes to push voter turn-out up to 70 per cent, compared to the last election’s 54.18 per cent, he said.

Visionary library Bangkok’s Suan Dusit Rajabhat University (SDU) has adapted its library to support disabled users, a senior official said yesterday. The arrangement of multimedia materials in the central library space has been designed with blind and partially sighted users in mind, and this was a model for many SDU study centres to follow, said SDU IT Office director Pannee Suanpleng. The move chimed with an initiative of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, and was rewarded with a certificate from the Information Technology Project, added Pannee. – Daily Xpress

OBAMA SHOULD SHIELD THE WEB A P , Washington

resident-elect Barack Obama should create a White House office to protect cyberspace from hackers, thieves and foreign agents, says a panel of government and industry experts. The report also urges Obama’s administration and Congress to pass new laws to allow for speedier investigations – and in some cases quicker retaliation once intruders are identified. It proposed online “data warrants”, for example, rather than traditional search warrants, which it said “may be increasingly impracticable in the online environment”. Martha “Sunny” von Bulow, the American heiress who lingered for three decades in a vegetative state – allegedly the result of her husband’s efforts to kill her – died at a Manhattan nursing home. An official from the Mary Manning Walsh Home confirmed that Martha, 76, died from cardiopulmonary arrest after spending nearly 28 years in a coma, which authorities alleged was the result of her husband’s second attempt to kill her at their Newport, Rhode Island estate. Despite being unconscious,

Chances are good Obama will be receptive: at least five members of the panel that produced the report are working for his presidential transition team. “Responding to a cyber attack is a tough issue,” said James Lewis of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. “Do operators respond with law enforcement, espionage or military action? The guidelines are really unclear. The rules designed in the 1980s are slow, and the Internet is fast.” The report urges the Obama administration to make clear to America’s enemies and allies how it will respond when it detects and traces cyberspace attacks, depending on whether break-ins are blamed on hackers, criminals or foreign governments. US options could include trade or financial sanctions or even military attacks.

Heiress dies; ex-hubby happy? Martha, daughter of utilities mogul George Crawford, was very much an offstage presence during the two sensational trials in the 1980s of Claus von Bulow, a Danish socialite convicted and later acquitted of trying to murder his wife twice with insulin injections, which would have aggravated her hypoglycemic condition. Newport society and the global news media were transfixed by the trials that unveiled a dramatic

story of a beautiful millionaire heiress and her foreign-born husband, suspected of wanting to kill his wife to steal her fortune and marry his mistress, a soap opera actress. The drama also captured Hollywood’s attention and was made into the 1990 film “Reversal Fortune” starring Glenn Close and Jeremy Irons. Von Bulow, who now lives in London, eventually gave up claims

to his wife’s fortune and agreed to divorce her. After collapsing on the floor of her bathroom in December 1980, Martha never showed any signs of brain activity and was fed through a tube in her stomach. She had a first marriage to Prince Alfred von Auersperg, an Austrian professional tennis player with a playboy reputation. They had two children and subsequently divorced. She is survived by two daughters, a son and nine grandchildren. – AFP

here were cheers of surprise and pleasure last month when it was announced that Singapore’s definitive dance festival, ZoukOut, would be returning to Siloso beach in Sentosa this year, putting an end to fears that the party would be dislodged by the construction of a water park. “We were aware there were plans to build a wave park in the middle of the beach, so we weren’t sure if ZoukOut would return in 2008,” recalls Zouk Management marketing manager Tracy Phillips. “Construction has started but it will only be completed in 2009, and we have managed to work around it for the festival this year. We also have an understanding with the wave park management to try to work together in the

coming years too, to keep ZoukOut on the beach.” ZoukOut 2008, which is costing S$1.6 million (Bt37.3 million), takes place on Saturday under the theme “Golden Moments” and gets off to an early start with the music kicking off at 6.30. “ZoukOut always aims to be the ultimate beach festival, so this year, we decided to bring forward the opening time to be able to catch the sunset and allow us to book artists and bands who play genres suitable for that time of the evening, and build up towards the more electronic and pumping artists later in the night,” says Phillips.

International line-up The line-up of international artists includes Nouvelle Vogue, Erol Alkan, Above & Beyond, Dirty South, Sasha and Dimitri from Paris, to

name a few. Besides the usual out-of-this world performers, there’ll be carnival rides, drumming lessons, palmistry, massages and inexpensive food. Zouk has also teamed up with the Singapore Art Museum to present several one-off installations by the country’s emerging artists.

eter Chan’s epic about three Chinese mercenaries in 19th-century China won best film at the Chinese-language equivalent of the Oscars on Saturday, dashing hopes of a home triumph for the Taiwanese hit “Cape No 7”. “The Warlords” also won Chan the best director prize at the Golden Horse Awards, marking the Hong Kong helmer’s transition from subtle love sto- Chan ries to bigbudget blockbusters. China’s Zhang Hanyu won best actor for his role in the war movie “Assembly”, about the heroics of a People’s Liberation Army unit in the Chinese civil war in the 1940s, beating action star Jet Li of “The Warlords”. Veteran Hong Kong singer

Prudence Liew was named best actress for playing a struggling sex worker and drug addict in “True Women for Sale”. Much of the attention had been focused on “Cape No 7”, a surprise hit on Taiwan that has become the island’s most successful movie in years and its second top box-office earner of all time behind “Titanic”. The story of a failed rock singer who returns to his small coastal hometown and reluctantly joins a hastily assembled amateur band won over audiences with its quirky cast of characters and downto-earth portrayal of Taiwanese culture. But the movie failed to clinch any of the top awards on Saturday, although winning best supporting actor for Ma Ju-lung, best original song, best score and the audience favourite award. >> ON THE INTERNET www.GoldenHorse.org.tw

Thinking large TV host Noomam Kultangwattana comes out with a line of clothes for bigger-than-life babes By Lisnaree Vichitsorasatra D A I LY X P R E S S

n a case of life imitating art, Surivipa “Noomam” Kultangwattana has carboncopied the movie “Phat Girlz”, in which the hefty heroine gets fed up with put-downs and becomes a successful designer of clothes for big ladies. A TV host long admired for her fashion sense, Noomam has just launched Suri by Surivipa, a line of togs for fullsize women. Her shop is in Siam Paragon’s first-floor Fashion Hall. “Often, right after a show, viewers call up to ask where I get my clothes,” says the host of Channel 9’s popular, Oprah-style chat programme “Surivipa”. Noomam invariably had to have all her clothes custommade, and she’s tried all the diets that don’t work. So now she’s come up with her own line of apparel that she believes will make big girls feel as comfortable and confident as she does. She put out a call for models and got 3,000 responses. Thirty women have been selected for the job. One of them, 23-year-old Book, weighs 70 kilograms and stands 160 centimetres tall. “I think I’m beautiful,” Book says, “and I have more beautiful clothes than slim people.”

For her Suri line of normal S, M and L sizes – no “XLs” – Noomam has the help of 20 costume designers and anoth-

“I want to see people living full lives, whether they’re going out, swimming, playing tennis or whatever,” she says.

oung adults are taking the offensive against undesirable body hair, according to a study of 314 students conducted by the University of Leipzig. The study showed that 97 per cent of the women and 79 per cent of the men questioned regularly shave, epilate or otherwise remove hair from at least one part on their body. The average age of the study’s participants was 23, and more than two-thirds of the participants were women. The study did not count the shaving of men’s beards and moustaches. Nine of 10 women in the study or 89 per cent who regularly shave, epilate or trim, said they removed hair from three or more places on their body. Almost half said they removed hair from four places. Researchers said women most commonly shave their legs, armpits and genital areas, and some also shave their eyebrows. Among men who regularly remove hair – not including their beards and moustaches – more than 50 per cent said they removed hair from two or three places on their bodies. For men the primary places are the armpits, genital area and the upper body.

Asked why they need to be rid of the hair, the participants said they wanted to look attractive and meet society norms. Researchers link the shaving trend, particularly among women who remove hair from their genital area, to a desire to look pre-pubescent and signal sexual immaturity. This strengthens a man’s sense of superiority, the researchers said. At the same, time shaving intimate areas could also be interpreted as a sign of heightened feminine liberation and a sense of mature feminine selfconfidence. Professor Elmar Braehler, who was responsible for the

study, said basically there is a general cultural trend toward shaving. “Ever-skimpier bathing suits as well as the strong presence of nudity in the media contribute to the emergence of an aesthetic norm for these areas," said Braehler. Thus, an impera-

tive form for the genital area has developed. As with all fashion, an opposing trend will follow, according to the researchers. “Sooner or later lush hair again will be considered chic.”

I’m thinking about getting dermal filler treatments. What can I expect? The treatment is a safe and effective way to replenish collagen. Dermal fillers work to improve skin problems by combating wrinkles, frown lines, crows’ feet, folds from the corners of the nose to the mouth, and restoring the lip border. A treatment

takes 30 to 50 minutes and it’s usually painless because a topical anaesthetic is applied beforehand. Most patients feel comfortable about returning to normal daily activity immediately after a treatment. You may experience some minor inflammation or redness, but that should disappear within an hour. Touch-up injections are usually needed two or three times a year.

amsung celebrates the end of 2008 with the launch of the Pixon or M8800, a touch-screen camera phone with a sleek and beautiful body and a resolution of 8 megapixels. The Pixon, which runs on Samsung’s own software, also features a large, bright 3.2-inchwide screen for enjoying movies on the go.

YOU CAN QUICKLY ACCESS YOUR MOSTUSED APPLICATIONS BY DRAGGING AND DROPPING THEM ONTO THE SHORTCUT BAR .

The camera functioned well in our test, capturing good-quality pictures in a well-lit environment. Scenery, portrait and macro shots came out beautifully clean. The touch-screen interface makes it easy and fun to browse through your collections of photos, with the interface allowing you to zoom out and view your images just as if they were spread out on the table. Just use your finger to move each photo to the side so you can see the next one. The Pixon supports both DivX and Xvid video formats and records video at the very fluid rate of 120 frames per second for small resolution or QVGA and 30fps for the larger resolution of 720 x 480 pixels. You can make shortcuts for quickly accessing your mostused applications by dragging and dropping them onto the shortcut bar on the left side of the home screen and positioning your favourites at the top. Loeb wins Rally of Great Britain World champion Sebastien Loeb crowned his season with victory in the Rally of Great Britain here on Sunday for his first win in the race. The Frenchman, driving a Citroen C4, beat overnight leader Jari-Matti Latvala of Finland by 2.7seconds to record his 11th win of the season and 48th career success. Loeb, who has been crowned world champion five times, left it late as he trailed Latvala by over two seconds going into the 19th and final special stage after the Frenchman had been handed a 10sec penalty for having false started in the preceding special. However, just as he had done in the three previous special stages on Sunday Loeb prevailed.- AFP

R

eal Madrid trail Barcelona by nine points going into next Saturday’s ‘El Clasico’ at Camp Nou after the double champions fell to a 4-3 home defeat to Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday. Real came from 3-1 down to level at 3-3 but Renato headed the winner four minutes from time to sink ten-man Real who had Arjen Robben sent off on 77 minutes. Real coach Bernd Schuster knows defeat in Barcelona would leave his team a staggering 12 points behind their archrivals and Dutch winger Robben will now miss the Barcelona clash through suspension as will Brazilian defender Marcelo.

“There is no question that Barcelona are on fire at the moment,” said Schuster. “I can’t talk of winning at Camp Nou at the moment. We just have to think about making a game of it. “Things didn’t go our way tonight but not everything is bad luck. Their first two goals were bad marking from set-pieces.” Real got off to a nightmare start conceding after just three minutes when the usually reliable Iker Casillas flapped at a cross and Adriano was at the backpost to accept the Christmas gift bundling the ball home. Captain Raul equalised on 18 minutes with a well-timed glancing header from a precise Guti cross.

Real looked threatening but their defence looked frail and the lanky Koffi Ndri Romaric headed in a corner three minutes after the equaliser to make it 2-1. Even though Sevilla, who were trounced 3-0 by Barcelona in their last match, were without their top striker Luis Fabiano through suspension, they were causing untold problems and struck again on 38 minutes. Renato saw his shot blocked and the ball fell to Frederic Kanoute who showed a cool head to stroke the ball into the corner. The home fans, donning rain coats to combat the torrential rain in Madrid, jeered their side at the interval. Schuster took off Rafael van der Vaart for compatriot Roysten Drenthe at half-time to try and give the team more

urope’s top goalkeepers suffered a severe winter chill at the weekend, handing out early Christmas presents in the process. Celtic’s Polish international Artur Borac dropped another clanger as the Scottish champions slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Hibs while Spain’s Euro 2008 stopper Iker Casillas blundered in Real Madrid’s 4-3 loss to Sevilla. England’s David James kickstarted the December horror show when he was caught out with an embarrassing error in Portsmouth’s Uefa Cup exit on Thursday. Borac’s horror show occurred at chilly Easter Road in Edinburgh on Sunday when John Rankin unleashed a speculative 50-metre drive which swerved beyond the spluttering Pole. Celtic manager Gordon Strachan refused to reveal what he’d said to Boruc after the match. “I think when you speak to players after the game, you keep that in the dressing room. So we will do that,” said Strachan after seeing his team’s 12-match league winning run come to an end. “I think if the guy plays here for another 10 years and hits a ball like that it won’t go in the back of the net. But that’s life.” Rankin said: “I took a touch and everyone backed off so I thought, ‘Just hit it’.

To be fair it did ‘squiggle’, the ball moved in the air and I don’t know how it landed to go in.” In the pouring rain at the Santiago Bernabeu, Casillas was at fault for Sevilla’s first goal. After just three minutes, the usually reliable Casillas flapped at a cross and Adriano was at the backpost to accept the gift, bundling the ball home. The defeat left Real nine points behind bitter rivals Barcelona in the title race. In Germany, Wolfsburg enjoyed a 2-1 win over Hanover whose goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz was shown a straight red card for bringing down Wolfsburg midfielder Zvjezdan Misimovic who was awarded a penalty. But stand-in goalie Jan Rosenthal saved the spotkick. On Thursday, Portsmouth’s first Uefa Cup campaign had ended in heartbreak at the same Wolfsburg venue where the German side won 3-2. James was responsible for the third goal when he allowed Zvjezdan Misimovic to take the ball from him as he attempted to dribble the ball out of defence. However, James partially made amends when he saved an 80th-minute Misimovic penalty. “David is a fantastic goalkeeper. I’ve got great faith in him and I love him to bits,” said Portsmouth manager Tony Adams.

It is not easy to win at the Bernabeu so we are happy.” Earlier, Recreativo Huelva registered only their second win of the season to move off the bottom with a 3-2 win over Real Mallorca. eal Madrid president Ramon Calderon narrowly won a vote of confidence on Sunday during a tense meeting when the club’s general assembly passed his budget proposal despite calls for his resignation. Only hours later, nearly 80,000 fans at Santiago Bernabeu stadium called for the president’s resignation at half-time of Madrid’s 4-3 loss to Sevilla. Calderon went into the annual meeting with the Spanish club showing profits of US$65 million last season, when his second year in office was marked by a second straight league title. But a series of ill-timed public outbursts, alleged vote-rigging and a dip in the club’s performances meant that a budget submitted by Calderon was only just approved. Calderon fidgeted in his chair as the cries from a large faction of the 1,215 members filled the hall. Much of the anger stems from criticism of the handling of Madrid’s youth team. A group of Madrid fans shouted “Mas cantera, menos de fuera!” (“More from the youth team and less signings from outside!”).

But with just 12 seconds left, Young sped clear to finish in style as Villa went back to fifth in the table while defeat saw Everton drop down into eighth. “It’s a brilliant victory,” goalhero Young told Sky Sports. “I had an opportunity in the second half that I should have taken, so to win the game at the death shows the character of the boys in our squad. “We defended brilliantly today and it’s a brilliant feeling to get a goal at the death.” Villa manager Martin O’Neill added: “I thought it was a wonderful game. Young’s done fantastically – it was a world-class performance by him.” Everton manager David Moyes said his side should have come away with at least a point. “The players didn’t deserve that,” the Scot said. “But there was a wee bit of disarray when we should have seen the game out. Chelsea and Roma, packed with superstars but dogged by European inconsistency, face a potential Champions League fright night today as the group stages of the money-spinning tournament come to an end. Roma top Group A with nine points ahead of their final group match at home to French side Bordeaux, who are two points behind and still in contention for a place in the last 16. Chelsea, last year’s runners-up and second behind Roma on eight points, tackle Romanian minnows Cluj and should progress although they go into the Stamford Bridge game with rumours of splits in the squad. Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari refuses to believe Chelsea will slip up against the Romanians who have no chance of progressing. A victory will ensure Chelsea qualify, although they would still make the knockout round if they do not win and Bordeaux fail to pick up three points in Rome. “Is it unthinkable that Chelsea go out? Well, I don’t think any people in the world are thinking about this, but it is possible because we have given this opportunity to other teams,” Scolari said. Roma unpredictable form has also affected their European campaign where they have won three games but lost two. AFP

C Milan and Juventus kept their title hopes alive ahead of next week’s crunch clash between the pair by both winning on Sunday and cutting the gap to leaders Inter Milan back to six points. Inter’s 3-0 victory at Lazio on Saturday had heaped pressure on their nearest two challengers and while both toiled for long periods, they eventual-

ly eked out important wins, Milan succeeding 1-0 at home to Catania and Juve triumphing 2-1 at Lecce. Milan began their match against the Sicilians in the middle of a paralysing injury crisis. With players such as Ronaldinho, Andrea Pirlo, Marco Borriello, Clarence Seedorf, Massimo Ambrosini and Alessandro Nesta all on the treatment table, a patch-

work Milan took to the field at the San Siro. Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti claimed those problems could derail his team’s scudetto hopes. “It’s clear that this Milan team doesn’t have enough to catch Inter,” he said. “Right now they’re playing the best football, they’re the team with the most consistency. “First of all we need to get

back all our injured players, we’ll get some back during the week. “Most of all we need our central midfielders back to be competitive against Juventus.” Juve boss Claudio Ranieri admitted it would be difficult to catch Inter but said he hadn’t given up hope. “The scudetto? We continue to believe, we don’t want to let up, we can win the title,” he said.

REID DROPS BOMBSHELL Thailand coach wants to return to Sunderland

chairman] Niall Quinn. “I do know Niall well. We speak occasionally and he invited me to their first home game of the season against Liverpool. I had two seventh-place finishes, which I think were the best since the war, before coming fourth from bottom. “My being linked with the job may not please all the fans, but I left the club in a better state than when I arrived and I’d be confident of success again,” said Reid.

hailand’s football coach Peter Reid dropped a bombshell by saying that he would be interested in returning to Sunderland as manager to replace Roy Keane. Even though the veteran coach, currently on national duty in the Asean Football Federation’s Suzuki Cup, had earlier confirmed to local media that he intends to honour the contract he signed in September, there are reports on the Internet about his desire to return to England. According to the Soccernet website, Reid, who managed the Black Cats between 1995 and 2002, not only expressed his interest in the job left vacant following Keane’s sudden resignation last week but also claimed that there was a clause in his contract that al-

Clause in the contract “I would be interested,” Reid was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail. “Everyone aspires to work in England. It’s the place to be.

The players here dream about it and I know I won’t be working abroad forever. “There is a clause in my contract which allows me to speak to English clubs if they show interest, so that would be up to [Sunderland

Worawi Makudi, the Football Association of Thailand president, was reluctant to confirm whether the 52-year-old had such a clause in his contract. “I don’t think he will [go to Sunderland]. But I have no comment about it. I will have to check all the details before I can say anything.” Asked whether Reid has a clause in his contract allowing him to return to England, Worawi replied: “For holiday, yes.”

Cristiano Ronaldo with Ballon d’Or trophy

I never said it: Ronaldo Cristiano Ronaldo denied that he had ever claimed he was the best player in the world. The 23-year-old insisted that all he had said was that he was wellplaced to win the Ballon D’Or (European Player of the Year) award, which he received on Sunday. “I never said that I was the best player in the world. I always said that I was well-placed to win the Ballon d’Or. “I have always had a lot of respect for the other players. It is not necessary to say who is the best player in the world, but who has an advantage.” AFP

Wie proves she belongs on LPGA Florida ichelle Wie earned a spot on the LPGA Tour on Sunday, overcoming a miserable start to shoot a 2-over 74 and easily finish among the top 20 players at the Q-school to become a card-carrying member of the tour. Wie has been playing LPGA Tour events since she was in the seventh grade, drawing the biggest galleries because of her youth and power, but earning little respect from players because of her preferential treatment. In the 62 tournaments she has played over the last seven years, Wie received 53 exemptions or invitations. The next time Wie tees it up, she finally can feel like she belongs. “It’s a good feeling,” Wie said. “I really earned it. I legitimately went through Q-school. I feel good. It’s like high school graduation.”

ose Maria Olazabal has been appointed captain of the European Team in the Royal Trophy as two-time skipper Seve Ballesteros is undergoing a series of operations on a brain tumour. Ballesteros spearheaded Europe to two consecutive wins over Asia in the tournament, the third edition of which is scheduled for January 9-11 in Bangkok. “I am truly honoured to be appointed by Seve to take such an important responsibility and I will do my best to deliver a win for my great friend and for Europe. I plan to stay in touch with Seve throughout the process and to work with him as a partner – just like we did on the golf course for so many years in the Ryder Cup,” said Olazabal. The Asian Team will be captained by Naomichi “Joe” Ozaki.
