Traffic alert! Police will be putting up cameras at 30 spots around Bangkok By Suparat Iamtarn DAILY XPRESS

rom December 30, motorists who break the law at 30 intersections in Bangkok will be shot, no questions asked. Cameras and censors being installed will automatically record a motorist’s infringement and send a photo along with a traffic ticket to the wrongdoer’s home. The aim for this is to reduce arguments between police and motorists accused of running red lights, or stopping in prohibited areas and causing traffic jams, said deputy chief of traffic affairs Pol Maj-Gen Panu Kerdlarppol yesterday.

New eyes in the sky The 30 intersections affected include the AsokePetchaburi, Rama 9, Sathorn, Silom, the Phayathai, Victory Monument and Din Daeng intersections, he said. The police would also get tough on motorists whose vehicles had no licence plates or had material covering their licence plates, he said. Those found guilty of any of these offences were subject to Bt1,000 fines, he said, warning that lawbreaking motorists couldn’t hide, as the cameras will capture shots of both the front and rear of vehicles. f the 700-plus racing pigeons that took off from Chiang Mai on the inaugural Thailand Grand Pigeon Race yesterday, just 150 made it to Bangkok. They were competing to win a royal trophy and big cash prizes for their owners. The winner, landing on its cage on top of a building in Bangkok’s Yannawa district after a marathon 575-kilometre flight, belongs to Belgian national Chris Hebberecht. It fluttered in sharp at 4.06pm.

Winging in a few minutes later, at 4.18pm, were six Thai birds. Thanks to his speedy pigeon, Hebberecht will win a trophy from His Majesty the King and a cash prize of ¤22,000 (Bt1.02 million). The first and second runners-up will get a trophy from Her Majesty the Queen and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and cash prizes of ¤10,000 and ¤5,000 respectively.

Not every bird arrived “We released 708 pigeons in the morning,” says Taweechai

Techawichian, chairperson of the organising committee. Birds registered in the race have owners from Belgium, the Netherlands, Romania, Britain, Switzerland and, of course, Thailand. Taweechai says the pigeons had been kept in one large cage and trained in Thailand since early this year. The Chiang Mai-Bangkok route was the final leg of their journey.

In record time Each arrival time was recorded by a computer linked to a microchip implanted in the bixrd. Before the final leg, the pigeons had flown races from Nakhon Sawan, Phichit and Uttaradit.

“This is a colourful activity and should help boost the country’s tourism,” deputy governor of Chiang Mai Chuchart Keelapaeng says. He was part of the pigeon releasing ceremony yesterday morning. Initially, 1,666 pigeons were entered in the race, but many disappeared during training or did not return after racing. “Some birds got lost. Others fell ill during the long haul because of changes in weather conditions, while some will have fallen prey to predators,” Taweechai explains. The race was jointly organised by Thailand’s Racing Pigeon Federation, the Grand Pet Show and Friendship Associations.

ustralian detectives have charged 22 men including a policeman, a lawyer and a child-care worker in connection with a child porn-sharing network spanning 70 countries, police said yesterday. The investigation into men sharing images over the Internet was prompted by information from a covert Brazilian police scrutiny a year ago, Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Andrew Colvin said. The information identified more than 200 suspects in 70 countries, he said.

“These are some of the worst images, I must say, that the Federal Police have ever seen,” Colvin told reporters.

Chilling images Australian police have seized 500,000 images of child abuse and 15,000 videos, some showing children being abused for more than two hours. The victims were as young as 12 months old, he said. Those charged in Australia include a Queen’s Counsel, the nation’s most senior rank of attorney, a police officer and at least one child-care worker, Colvin said. Police did not say whether any arrests were made

outside Australia in connection with the case. None of those charged can by law be named before they appear in court.

Easy access “These offenders have access to children, be it their own children, their neighbours’ children, children from broken relationships, children they might have responsibility for – some of these people are in positions of responsibility,” Colvin said. Two children had been removed from defendants although there was no evidence that they had been abused, he said. Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Gaughan said more arrests were expected this week.

Both are now in stable condition. – DPA

Though there’s only patchy coral cover and small reef fish, it would make a great introduction to the undersea world for any beginner. Papa, don’t preach The Vatican is attracting strong protests after its UN representative came out against a statement to be made at the General Assembly affirming the human rights of LGBTI people worldwide (see related story on this page). The statement urges UN member states to end criminal penalties, in particular executions, arrests or detention on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, but the Vatican in a statement claimed that it would force countries to legalise same-sex marriage.

Obama rocks! US president-elect Barack Obama is set to appoint a lesbian to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality. A duty to diversity

Simply honouring human rights could go a long way to avoiding tense political stand-offs By Paisarn Likhitpreechakul SPECIAL TO D A I LY X P R E S S

espite the airport siege and coup rumours, the first National Human Rights Day for Sexual Diversity went ahead on November 29 with rainbow umbrellas blooming all the way from Lido cinema to the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre. Perhaps it can be seen as a statement that human rights are not something our society can turn on and off at its convenience. In his opening speech, civil society champion Jon Ungpakorn even argued that honouring rights and diversity can help us avoid the kind of political conflict that we’re facing today. Dr Seri Wongmontha then told us how far we have come since the dark times some 20

years ago when he first came out. Tiffany executive and former Constitution Drafting committee member Alisa Phanthusak pinpointed our government’s obligations toward LGBTI citizens as stated in Article 30 of the current constitution. This was coupled with remarks by Prof Vitit Muntarbhorn, co-chair of the Yogyakarta Principles meeting, on our country’s international obligations in terms of equality and non-discrimination towards LGBTIs as outlined by the principles. Shows by dramatist Wannasak Sirilar and entertainer Day Freeman won great acclaim and laughs while the interactive LGBTI rights discussions were lively and informative. Too bad about the low media turnout, but it was a wonderful time for the hundreds of participants.

On December 4, Thai LGBTI activists met with Nadhavathna Krishnamara at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to present a letter from LGBTI organisations and a petition signed by hundreds of individuals to request the government’s support for the “French statement” affirming the universality of rights regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. They also later met with the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission to discuss the issue. More than 50 countries have confirmed their support for the statement. The latest news is that the African state of Gabon will be making this statement in the UN General Assembly next week on behalf of all these countries. Let’s watch if Thailand will reaffirm its domestic and international

obligations toward LGBTI rights by adding our country’s name to the list. Share ideas on gay issues via e-mail to asiantrekker@yahoo.com.

he four friends who, as Aa Theatre, gave us the engaging drama “Christmas Story” last December are back for the new Yule with “Christmas Story 2”. Japan-born, Thailand-bred Shoko Tanikawa reprises his role as the mysterious man on a park bench who goes by the Internet moniker Santa Claus. Last time he met Eri, a streetwalker (played by Suphannahongse-nominated actress Sasithorn Panichnok), and Kero, a sick gay man (Phayap Kaewkred). Surachai Midam completes the original cast as Terry, in the show written, produced and directed by Shoko. “Santa is back to meet his friends, as they all promised last year,” Shoko says. “Eri is no longer a hooker but a restaurant waitress. Kero is now a cinema usher, and Terry is suffering more from his illness and his death seems near.” Stage veteran Supasawat Buranavech, a veterinarian by profession, will portray a lonely vet who comes across the reunion. “It seems as though everyone has something he or she can give to the others, just the way Santa gives us what we want,” Shoko says “But in this situation it’s more about learning from

each other’s life experiences how to solve our own problems.” Romance is budding between Santa and Eri, adds Sasithorn. “This is the first time Santa realises what love truly is, but he doesn’t know how to show

it, so his friends help him. “Last year Santa brought us gifts. We were all lonely, but after talking to him we were happier. This year we’re giving back to him.” Thai and Japanese translations of the dialogue will be projected onto a stage screen.

Bless me, Father! The Priests, an Irish white-collar trio, achieves what most Britpop can only pray for By Manta Klangboonkrong D A I LY X P R E S S

n the most divine musical success since the Singing Nun of the 1960s, three Catholic clergymen in Northern Ireland have a No 1 hit across Britain as “The Priests”. That’s also the name of their debut album, which is resting atop the UK charts along with the first single, “Ave Maria”. Father David Delargy and the O’Hagan brothers – Father Eugene and Father Martin – are wowing homeland audiences with their hymns rearranged in classical fashion and backed by the Basillica of St Peter’s Choir from Vatican City. All the money they’re making goes to charity. Check out www.ThePriests.com. Always happy to talk to a priest, whether we need to or not, we called Father Eugene.

Hit-parade heaven overnight, Father? We’ve been singing together for 13 years. That’s a long time! We were singing together when we were children, really. Martin and I come from a musical family of six children. We sang in school, in concerts and we were invited to the church and won a competition and a few prizes.

Tell us about the album. It’s a collection of sacred music with songs that are cherished and loved by many people across the world. We have songs in Latin, one song in German, one in Irish and the rest in English. They are lovely hymns.

You’ve got a great producer, too. Mark Hedges is well known

as the producer of U2, Dido and the Manic Street Preachers. He wanted to do something religious, which may sound unusual for someone who’s been involved in the pop and rock world. Initially he wanted to do an album with the music of the Latin mass, and they were looking for only one priest. But when we came onto the scene, they asked for our demo tape and they liked it.

Will non-Christians enjoy this? The album is for all lovers of music, whether they’re Christian or not, of any age and any of the labels that we tend to put on people. Music has the ability to transcend our personal views. It cuts across all boundaries. I believe the music we have on this album will be able to do that.

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney scores the second goal during the champions League match between Manchester United and Aalborg at Old Trafford.

Striker saves United blushes with late strike, Bayern Munich win a thriller AFP, Manchester

W

ayne Rooney saved Manchester United from an embarrassing Champions League defeat at home to Aalborg on Wednesday, but the striker was lucky to avoid a red card for a first-half foul on Kasper Risgard during this 2-2 draw. England striker Rooney scored a crucial equaliser on 52 minutes to extend United’s unbeaten run in the Champions League to 19 games – a record shared with Ajax and Bayern Munich. But Sir Alex Ferguson’s team were unconvincing and although defeat would have been a setback, the loss of Rooney to suspension could potentially have been much more damag-

ing. “There were some great chances,” Ferguson said. “We should have taken at least 30 per cent of them and then we would have won the game comfortably.” In the last 16 United could be drawn next week against Sporting Lisbon, Lyon, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid, whose president Ramon Calderon has infuriated Ferguson by pursuing his star winger Cristiano Ronaldo. “That would be a nice party wouldn’t it?” Ferguson joked. “I look forward to tea and biscuits with Ramon Calderon.” Topping the group means United will play the second leg of their knockout tie at home and Ferguson feels that could be an advantage.

“[We will] come to Old Trafford with a full house and a really good atmosphere,” he said. “We are there, have got the track record and the players so let’s go and have a go.” Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side slipped up in their bid to top their Champions League group as they went down to rivals FC Porto 2-0. Two players turned coaches who used to play for Wenger in his days as Monaco coach provided the match of the evening as Jurgen Klinsmann’s Bayern Munich forged into a 3-0 lead – thanks mainly to a double by Miroslav Klose taking him to five for this campaign – over French champions Lyon, coached by Claude Puel only to just edge them 3-2. Victory ensured Bayern finished top of the group with Lyon in second, though, Klinsmann

said the former Germany coach. “We made two mistakes and I think it was down to a lack of concentration. You can’t do that against such a good side as Lyon.” Franck Ribery’s swashbuckling attacking performance left Lyon bereft of ideas. The Frenchman was involved in all three of Bayern’s goals, scoring the second, while Klose’s brace left him with 21 career strikes in Europe. Sidney Govou and Karim Benzema earned consolation goals for Lyon. Ribery said afterwards he was flattered to have been appreciated by Lyon fans. “Spectators at the Gerland stadium applauded me? Coach Dick Advocaat said that he played Arshavin despite the player running a high fever. “He was desperate to play and show himself,” Advocaat said. “Sometimes a player of that quality you have to give them a chance to show it in Europe, and for Andrei it was time.” Ramos moved Marcelo into midfield and centre back Christoph Metzelder into the left back. “We had to look for a solution in these days that we can work against them,” the former Sevilla coach said. “It was an experiment and we wanted to see how it would work.”

rsene Wenger insists Arsenal have nothing to be afraid of in next week’s Champions League draw despite their failure to win Group G. Wenger’s side surrendered top spot in their qualifying group to Porto after a dismal 2-0 defeat against the Portuguese champions at the Dragao Stadium on Wednesday. Finishing second means the north London club will face either Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Roma or Panathinaikos in the last 16 when the draw is made in Nyon next Friday, but that daunting prospect doesn’t faze Wenger. “We can fight with everybody in Europe and can qualify against anybody,” he said. “We will see who we get in the draw, and then look at the Champions League again in February. Let’s first wait to see who we get. It is difficult to have any speculation now. “It is important now to come back in the Premier League and be in a good position. Anthony hits mark

IN RARE NBA AIR Wade hits 29.5 points every game and wants more AP, Miami

ven Dwyane Wade was a bit astonished when he learned about the company he’s in these days. Out of the nearly 4,000 players who’ve suited up in NBA history, only two – Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan – finished a season with the sort of numbers Wade is putting up so far this season for the Miami Heat. Healthy again, Wade is averaging a league-best 29.5 points, along with 7.5 assists and 5 rebounds through 21 games. And Wade wants more. “Hopefully I can do better,” Wade said. “For right now, it’s always great to be in the conversation with anybody of the likes of Michael Jordan and Oscar ... but they did do it for a whole season. Mine is only 20-some games in. I’ve got 60-some more to go.”

E

Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade is in the company of Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan. So can he keep this up? “I guess we’ll see,” Wade said. Across the board, Wade is on his way to having his best season in a number of categories. His scoring is 2.1 points higher than his previous per-game average best. He’s also on pace to establish new career-highs in field-goal shooting, 3-pointers made, steals and blocked shots, and is certainly the biggest reason why the Heat – who were

the NBA’s laughingstock last year – are off to a 12-9 start this season. For Wade, the two injurymarred seasons that followed Miami’s 2006 championship campaign are “dead and gone,” just like the stigma of last year’s 15-67 debacle. “Health is a big part of all player’s performance,” Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. “This league is too

good. If you’re not healthy, you can’t do it, I don’t care how gifted you are. He’s obviously healthy and he’s one of the best players in the game right now. “He does everything. Blocks shots, passes, gets steals, he can score so many different ways. He’s healthy. You can see it.” If Wade finishes with anything close to the types of numbers he’s posting now, he’ll almost certainly be part of the MVP conversation – like Olympic team-mates LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul, along with Boston’s Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, among others. But unlike the Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Hornets, the Heat aren’t considered a championship-calibre team. And Wade knows that will hurt his individual-award chances at season’s end. So he’s not even thinking about it, and insists he’s just trying to keep the young Heat moving forward.

enver forward Carmelo Anthony tied a National Basketball Association record Wednesday as he scored 33 points in the third quarter of yesterday as he scored 33 points in the third quarter of yesterday’s 116-105 victory over Minnesota. Anthony had nine points at half-time, but exploded in the third period to tie Spurs’ star George Gervin’s record for most points in a quarter. He also broke the Nuggets’ previous franchise mark of 32 points held by David Thompson. Gervin’s scoring outburst came in the second quarter at New Orleans on April 9, 1978. “My shot was going,” said Anthony, whose 45 points for the game were four shy of his career high. “I felt good out there. “I can’t put it into words,” added Anthony, who said he didn’t know how many points he had scored until he heard it on the public address system. “No disrespect to David but it was my turn.”

Jeev Milkha Singh with the JT Cup in Tokyo last week.

“It will be fantastic to play the season-ending event on the Asian Tour especially as the new Asian No 1,” the Indian said. “The Tour means so much to me, it was where I started out.” Singh wrapped up the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit title for the second time with a dramatic victory at the Singapore Open in November and an 11th place finish at the following week’s

UBS Hong Kong Open. The Asian No 1’s victory in the Nippon Series JT Cup in Japan last weekend moved him up to 36 in the world. The win saw Singh overcome personal adversity, as his wife Kudrat delivered their first child stillborn in Japan. Singh dedicated his win to his wife. “She is healthy now and better things are on the way,” he said.

STRAUSS CALLS TUNE Opener hits a brilliant century but India fight back A F P , Chennai

ngland opener Andrew Strauss hit 123 in the first Test yesterday as cricket returned to centrestage in India after the Mumbai terror attacks. The left-hander’s 13th century after a first-wicket stand of 118 with Alastair Cook (52) lifted England to 229-5 by stumps on the opening day at the heavily guarded Chidambaram stadium. Andrew Flintoff was unbeaten on 18 and nightwatchman James Anderson was on two. India fought back in the final session with four wickets to end the day with honours even on a barren wicket that is expected to turn later in the match. The 45,000-seater stadium wore a deserted look as less than 1,000 fans watched the Test start just a fortnight after the Mumbai attacks that left 172 dead and injured more than 300. England, who abandoned the one-day series and flew home after the attacks, agreed to return for the two-Test series after security checks and a shift in venues. Kevin Pietersen’s men joined the Indian players in wearing black armbands and observing a minute’s silence for the victims before play began. The crowd, which swelled to around 5,000 by afternoon, included International Cricket Council chief executive

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, left, and team-mate Gautam Gambhir react to a shot by England batsman Andrew Strauss. Haroon Lorgat and top officials of the England and Wales Cricket Board. Strauss, a 31-year-old veteran of 54 Tests, said the distraction of the terror attacks and the uncertainty about the series helped him focus better. “I was probably as relaxed as I have felt going into a Test for a long time,” he said. “Maybe all the stuff that has been going on has taken our minds off the pressure of playing in Test cricket. I felt pretty comfortable from ball one. “We could have done without me getting out at the end. Five wickets is a pretty good effort by them on a flat wicket.

WE COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT ME GETTING OUT AT THE END.FIVE WICKETS IS A PRETTY GOOD EFFORT BY THEM. Andrew Strauss

“We’ve got 229 on the board and hopefully we can push on towards 400 tomorrow, which won’t be a bad effort.”

Flynn falls short New Zealand batsman Daniel Flynn fell five runs short of his maiden century after the West Indies used a new rule to successfully challenge the umpire’s decision in the first Test in Dunedin, New Zealand. The 23-year-old scored 95 as New Zealand made a solid 226 for four on the opening day of the first of two Tests before bad light stopped play about 70 minutes early.

Soren Hansen played solidly in the Ryder Cup.

yder Cup golfer Soren Hansen of Denmark joined Paul McGinley of Ireland and England’s Oliver Wilson in the European team for Thailand’s Royal Trophy next month, organisers said yesterday. The three were named by Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal, who is filling in for close friend and compatriot Severiano Ballesteros as captain of the

side that will take on a team from Asia. “I have named three players up to now and all of them have the experience of facing the Americans under Ryder Cup intensity, confronting the massive US galleries and coping with the highest level of pressure,” Olazabal said. Hansen was the latest addition to the team that will face Joe Ozaki’s Asian side, joining

three-time Ryder Cup winner McGinley and European Order of Merit current No 2Wilson. The remaining five places in the eight-man European side have yet to be filled.“Soren has been playing great golf for many years, had a very strong 2008 season, qualified ‘on merit’ for Nick’s [Faldo] team at Valhalla and secured an important half point in his first Ryder Cup match ever,” Olazabal said.

CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees agreed on the framework for a US$161 million, seven-year contract, the richest for a pitcher in Major League Baseball history. The Yankees and Sabathia’s agents still need to work out all the details, a baseball official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been completed and the pitcher must pass a physical. Sabathia has the right to opt out after three seasons and become a free agent again. Sabathia will give the Yankees a new marquee star as they head into the new $1.3 billion Yankee Stadium, where seats sell for up to $2,500 each. His deal will top the previous mark for a pitcher, a $137.5 million, six-year contract agreed to by Johan Santana and the New York Mets last winter. His $23 million average salary is just ahead of Santana’s $22.9 million Among all players, it will trail only Alex Rodriguez’s $275 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees, Rodriguez’s earlier $252 million, 10year agreement with Texas, and Derek Jeter’s $189 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees. Meanwhile, the New York Mets continued to revamp their bullpen as they agreed to a deal that will bring them Seattle Mariners closer JJ Putz in a three-team trade also involving Cleveland. Putz, 31, will join coveted closer Francisco Rodriguez – who inked a three-year deal earlier Wednesday – to form a dominant combination at the end of games for New York. The Mets will also acquire outfielder Jeremy Reed and righthander Seth Green from Seattle. The Mariners will obtain righthander Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first baseman Mike Carp from the Mets along with outfielder Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians. - AFP

DALY GOES CRAZY American grabs camera, smashes it into a tree AP, Sydney

ohn Daly smashed a spectator’s camera into a tree while shooting a 6-over 78 in the first round of the Australian Open yesterday, making it likely he will miss the cut for the third consecutive week Down Under. After pushing his tee shot wide on the ninth hole – his last – Daly walked into a clump of trees, where spectator Brad Clegg tried to take a picture at close range. Daly reportedly snatched the camera and smashed it against the nearest tree, telling the man, “You want it back, I’ll buy you a new one.” He later released a statement via tournament organisers saying Clegg got too close. “I was looking to take a drop and a camera was six inches

The guy that had the camera had already taken a dozen shots at close range.” Without saying another word, Daly took his penalty drop and finished the hole with a bogey to end his opening round and stormed off the course immediately after sign-

ing his card. Asked if he would seek compensation, Clegg said: “I don’t think I’ll be chasing him for the money. He’s a big bloke!” Daly, who missed the cut at both the Australian Masters and the PGA in the last two weeks and is being paid an appearance fee for his three-tournament trip Down Under, had three double bogeys, three bogeys and four birdies. Clegg said he didn’t think he provoked Daly by going so close. “I was bold, but I wasn’t unreasonable,” Clegg said. Terms and conditions for tickets at the Australian Open prohibit the use of cameras on the course for spectators. Tournament director Trevor Herden told reporters the episode was “an unfortunate incident,” but Daly would not face sanctions and confirmed the 42-year-old would tee off in the second round today.
