conomic crisis has taken the world by storm, but I believe it’s an opportunity for positive change. For people who have lost moral direction by assuming that “speculation”, not hard work, is the only way of getting rich, these times should be an eye-opener. Throughout history, power and greed have always overshadowed honesty and sincerity, but right now there’s a chance to reverse that domination. Let’s look at the present situation as a blessing in disguise.

19,000 COUNTERFEIT BANKNOTES have been found in the country this year.

t’s getting difficult to break a Bt1,000 banknote these days. Small-scale vendors are refusing to take them, spooked by the number of fake Bt1,000 banknotes found lately. Part of the problem is that the fakes look so real. “As soon as I produced a Bt1,000 note, the fruit seller told me she didn’t have enough money to give me change,” an office worker complained. To avoid turning away a regular customer, the vendor asked nearby stall owners whether they had any smaller notes to exchange for the Bt1,000. A resounding “No” was the answer.

A woman shows her fakedetecting machine. When pressed against a violet light, an authentic note will show small scattered watermarks.

The office worker said she dropped by a Se-Ed bookstore to break the note. “I had to go book shopping to get useable denominations,” she fumed, after paying Bt200. Another office worker, “Tai”, says she’s had to get streetwise. “I know that most small-scale vendors are worried about counterfeit notes, so I make sure that I have small denominations for payment,” she says. A diner reports that a restaurant recently asked him to pay by credit card after he handed over two Bt1,000 notes. “It’s okay. I understand that the restaurant owner doesn’t want to take the risk,” he said.

Can ATMs be fooled? Some people are even worried about the possibility of receiving fake notes from ATMs.

“That possibility is nil,” Thai Bankers’ Association secretary general Thawatchai Yongkittikul insists. “Banks have effective systems to detect counterfeit notes. Our automatic machines can distinguish the fake from the authentic too.” Members of the general public are being asked to look out for the forgeries.

How to spot one According to a Bangkok Bank source, notes with serial numbers starting 9A650 and 2D150 should be examined carefully. >> For detailed tips on how to identify genuine notes, visit: www.bot.or.th/English/ Banknotes/production_and_ security/Pages/identify.aspx

Refusing banknotes for payment is against the law as laid down in the Currency Act. That’s bad news for shop owners who refuse to accept Bt1,000 notes, fearful that they might be fooled by one of the fakes in circulation. “If a customer lodges a complaint against you, you risk being prosecuted,” Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station superintendent Colonel Sujin Nijpanic confirms. A large number of smallscale vendors have refused to accept Bt1,000 banknotes on grounds of rampant counterfeiting. Vendors at a major market in Khon Kaen, for example, are seeing fake banknotes on a daily basis. Moreover, a suspect just arrested has admitted he sold counterfeit Bt1,000 notes with a face value of several million baht in recent months. Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner Maj-General Amnuay Nimmano says that though the Currency Act makes it an offence to deny payment by banknotes, it fails to mention a punishment. “We will have to use the Consumer Protection Act,” Amnuay says. The relevant section of the Consumer Protection Act bans unfair adverts and stipulates three months in jail and a maximum fine of Bt30,000 for offenders. “So it’s clear any shop owner putting up a board saying that their shop does not accept Bt1,000 banknotes as payment will face legal punishment,” says Amnuay. “But it’s not clear how we can take action against vendors who verbally decline the banknotes.”

4,300-yr-old tombs found in Egypt A F P , Cairo

E

gyptian archaeologists have uncovered two tombs at Saqqara south of Cairo dating back more than 4,300 years to the last pharaoh of the fifth dynasty. “The two tombs belong to the pharoah Ouna’s supervisor-general of expeditions and to the head of the royal singers,” antiquities chief Zahi Hawass said. The tombs were found nearly 400 metres southwest of the massive bulk of King Zoser’s step pyramid, the first ever built, at the Saqqara necropolis 30 km south of Cairo. In November Egypt’s culture minister announced the discovery of the remains of a 4,300-year-old pyramid at the Saqqara necropolis, an ancient burial ground dating back to 2,700 BC.

Is Obama black, white...or neither? I identify as African-American – that’s how I’m treated and that’s how I’m viewed, says president-elect A P , Philadelphia

A

perplexing new chapter is unfolding in Barack Obama’s racial saga: many people insist that “the first black president” is actually not black. Debate over whether to call this son of a white Kansan and a black Kenyan biracial, African-American, mixed-race, half-and-half, multiracial – or in Obama’s own words, a “mutt” – has reached a crescendo since his election shattered assumptions about race. Obama has said: “I identify as African-American – that’s how I’m treated and that’s how I’m

viewed. I’m proud of it.” In other words, the world gave Obama no choice but to be black. But the world has changed since the young Obama found his place in it.

Other than black Intermarriage and the decline of racism are dissolving ancient definitions. The candidate Obama, in achieving what many thought impossible, was treated differently from previous black generations. And many white and mixedrace people now view President-elect Obama as

something other than black. One book, “Black People and their Place in World History”, by Dr Leroy Vaughn, even claims that five past presidents – Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge – had black ancestors, which would make Obama the sixth of his kind. Mix in a few centuries’ worth of Central, South and Native Americans, plus Asians, and untold millions of today’s US citizens need a DNA test to decipher their true colours. The melting pot is working. “We do not have our first black president,” the author Christopher Hitchens said on BBC’s Newsnight. “He is not black. He is as black as he is white.”

For helping his daughter through her turbulent period, Jamie Spears has been awarded an additional $51,000 pay-out, reflecting an increase in his monthly payments since he took over his 27-year-old daughter’s affairs in February. Jamie Spears had been receiving $10,000 a month for his work, but Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz increased that amount to approximately $16,000 per month and agreed to give him backpay. He was also granted an additional $1,200 monthly payment so he can maintain an office, which Goetz said was justified by his work getting his daughter’s personal life – and music career – back on track. former butler to Queen Elizabeth II was sentenced to at least six years in prison after admitting he molested three children, including one who accompanied him to a royal Christmas party. One of Paul Kidd’s victims contacted police after reading a newspaper interview with the ex-butler on last year’s 10th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana. The victim, now in his 40s, said he had been indecently assaulted by Kidd at the butler’s home in the early 1980s. Kidd pleaded guilty in October to nine counts of indecent assault and six counts of sexual activity with a child. He also pleaded guilty to caus-

The pills are advertised as “natural” fat busters and have intriguing names like Imelda Perfect Slim and Zhen de Shou. Some are promoted as new versions of “ancient remedies” from Asia. They promise an easy fix to weight problems, but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Monday the concoctions contain unlisted ingredients, including high doses of a powerful anti-obesity drug, as well as a suspected carcinogen. “When consumers are buying these products online, we’re telling them that if it sounds too good to be true, it is likely to be too good to be

counts of possessing indecent images of children. At a hearing at Manchester Crown Court in northern England on Monday, Judge Mushtaq Khokar said Kidd still posed a risk to young people. Kidd, 55, was a butler to the queen from 1977 to 1979, then was senior footman to the late Queen Mother until 1984. A number of offences date from his time in royal service. One victim said Kidd introduced him as a “friend” to the late Queen Mother during a Christmas party at her Clarence House residence. After leaving royal employment, Kidd charged up to £4,000 (Bt250,000) as an afterdinner speaker, and also worked on cruise ships, talking of his experiences in the queen’s household. Buckingham Palace declined comment on the case.

he seaside resort of Pattaya aims to bring a little cheer in these times of political and financial blues with a week-long festive event that kicks off tomorrow at Bali Hai Cape. Pattaya Countdown 2009, says Wittaya Khunpluem, chief executive of the Chon Buri Provincial Administrative Organisation, not only celebrates New Year’s Day but should also go some way towards rehabilitating the Kingdom’s declining economy. “It will bring smiles back to

the faces of the Thai people,” he says. “We expect to welcome 500,000 Thai and foreign tourists to Pattaya and increase the city’s revenue of Bt500 million during the countdown period.” “The event marks an unprecedented collaboration between Pattaya City and the PAO,” adds Pattaya Mayor Ittipon Khunpluem. “With its picturesque mountain backdrop and the giant signboard for Pattaya, Bali Hai Cape pier is becoming known as a ‘world meeting place’ like Sydney Harbour in Australia or Times Square in New York.”

Starts tomorrow The countdown begins tomorrow and runs through New Year’s Eve, featuring concerts and fireworks. On the last night, 20,000 fireworks will light the sky. Among the artists are Tik Shiro, Boy Peacemaker, So Cool, Blackhead, Paradox, Pancake and winners and runners-up of “The Star” including Gaem, Ruj, Ton and Dew. There’ll also be arts and cultural performances. The entertainment runs nightly from 7 to 1am on two stages. Satisfy your hunger at the food stalls on the sidelines.

XTRA MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT >> Pattaya’s New Year’s Eve countdown ceremony will be telecast live on Modernine TV from 10.30 to 1. >> “Countdown Daily”, which previews the event, will be broadcast on GMM Media’s radio stations from 5 to 5.30.

“Not even a global credit crunch can stifle Pattaya’s wonderful hospitality,” insists the mayor.

hat do we pay for when we buy a bottle of expensive champagne? Wine critic Robin Goldstein recently described a series of tastings in which about 60 people were asked to rate two unidentified glass-

es of sparkling wine. Two out of three preferred a US$12 (Bt500) Domaine Ste Michelle from Washington state over Dom Perignon, the famous luxury champagne that sells for $150. So if more people prefer the cheaper wine, why buy the expensive one? Goldstein concludes that when we purchase Dom, we’re not buying just wine but also the experience of drinking something exclusive and expensive. We enjoy the taste of money.

Money seems to taste sour these days. The champagne trade association CIVC has announced that global shipments of champagne have plummeted 20 per cent compared to a year ago.

So you wanna be a rock star Two video games go neck to neck in the battle of the fake bands

He finished third in the fifth season of “American Idol” and the Virginia-born Elliott Yamin has hit the big time with his self-titled debut album, a soulful outing that illustrates his commercial approach to pop and R&B mainstream. It opens with the popular single “Wait For You”, a slow ballad with beautiful piano that does justice to his R&B vocals. “Movin’ On” has a jazzy and funky rhythm while "Take My Breath Away” is a gem of a number with a great groove. Elliott is at his best on the cover of his hero Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You”.

The Promise Il Divo (Sony)

For their first album in two years, the four members of this best-selling vocal group once again lend their powerful, beautiful operatic voices to 12 popular romantic songs, opening with Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “The Power Of Love” as if to remind their fans of what they’ve been missing. Other gems include an emotional version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, Abba’s “The Winner Takes It All”, and the exquisite “She”. Il Divo are still frontrunners in the popoperatic genre and if you are still searching for a festive gift for a loved one, this will make a perfect present.

T

he American people have an important and historic decision to make this holiday season: Guitar Hero World Tour or Rock Band 2? For about $180 (Bt6,200), you get a large box containing video game controllers shaped like drum kit and a guitar along with a microphone and a game disc. Get a few friends together, and you can put together a fake rock band. Hit the right notes on the guitar controller and sing the right tones into the microphone, and you and your friends can briefly live a videogame version of the rockand-roll dream. Game industry analyst Michael Pachter figures that

the two titles will divide the market fairly evenly in the coming year. “You can argue over whether this guitar is better or whether these drums are better, but at the end of the day you’re doing the same thing and the music is similar,” he says. Odd as it sounds, this is a big business we’re talking about here. The Guitar Hero franchise did around $1 billion in sales last year. When a new version came out this past summer, dedicated to the music and career of Aerosmith, first-week sales of the game more than tripled first-week sales of Aerosmith’s most recent studio album. While some fans, but not all, feel that the latest Guitar Hero offers the superior “instru-

ments. Rock Band’s fans say the title has the clear advantage because of the amount of content available for download for people who want to expand their collections. Both game discs feature similar batches of songs from bands including Bon Jovi, Fleetwood Mac and Modest Mouse, but Rock Band has a wide library of 500 songs available for purchase online. Guitar Hero World Tour has only 41 licensed tracks for sale so far.

Game reviewer Ben Croshaw, an Australian who has become famous among regulars at websites like Digg for his snarky takes on the latest games, recently summed it up that sounds about right to me. “Playing Guitar Hero is still as inherently entertaining and shamelessly pathetic as it’s always been,” he said. “Get either this or Rock Band, because it honestly doesn’t matter which.”

The macaroon miracle DAILY XPRESS/ NUTTAPONE TIPVATEEAMORN

Easy to make and way classier than cookies, these treats are the key to a great 2009 launch By Lerpong Amsa-Ngiam D A I LY X P R E S S

W

hat do you mean you haven’t finished your holiday shopping yet!? Okay, calm down – do you have an oven? Chef Fabrice Danniel of Le Cordon Bleu Dusit Culinary is here with a recipe for greentea macaroons that are sure to maintain your hero status around the house. These delightful cookies, a seasonal favourite but great any time of year, combine a chewy inside and a crunchy outside, and if you serve them with chestnut filling over the holidays, 2009 will begin on a very high note indeed. The recipe isn’t complicated and the procedure doesn’t take much time. Just follow the directions below attentively, and you’ll see that valuable things don’t have to come at a high cost.

For the macaroons 250 g 250 g 90 g 90 g 225 g 75 g 10 g

ground almonds icing sugar egg whites egg whites (a second batch) sugar water green-tea powder

For the chestnut cream 60 g 300 g 75 g 20 g 10 g

softened butter chestnut paste chestnut cream milk rum

DIRECTIONS Boil the water and sugar together until the temperature reaches 116C. Meanwhile beat the first portion of the egg whites in an electric mixer on medium speed until the mix is foamy. Reduce the speed and pour in the boiled sugar syrup, then increase the speed back to medium to bring down the temperature to 50 degrees. Whisk together the ground almonds, green-tea powder and icing sugar and add them to the egg-sugar syrup mix, using a rubber spatula to combine everything. You might need a helping hand with this. The batter should turn sticky. Gently fold in the second portion of egg whites until they’re completely incorporated. Sift the batter twice until it looks shiny. Fit a pastry bag with a No 8 or 12 round tip and fill it with the batter. Pipe two-inch disks onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving two inches of space between the disks. Bang the baking sheet a few times on the table to make

sure the macaroons flatten out. Set the tray aside at room temperature for 15 to 30 minutes. Meanwhile preheat the oven to 180C. After 12 to 15 minutes, the batter’s surface should be dry to the touch. Place the baking sheet in the oven and reduce the temperature right away to 150C. Make sure there’s no humidity in the oven, otherwise the macaroons’ surface will crack. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the macaroons are completely dry. Remove the baking sheet to a wire rack and let the macaroons cool completely. Then transfer them to the refrigerator for three or four hours. To make the chestnut filling, beat the chestnut paste in an electric mixer on slow speed. Add the milk and chestnut cream and increase the speed to maximum. Reduce again to low speed, add the butter at room temperature and continue mixing at maximum speed until everything is well combined. Pour in the rum and beat the mixture for a few minutes. Instead of chestnut cream and chestnut paste, you can

Danniel

use icing sugar and apply a drop of food colouring and the imitation flavour of your choice. Flip half of the macaroons over. Fill a pastry bag with the chestnut filling and pipe it onto the these macaroons, and then top with the remaining macaroons, flat-side down, pressing slightly to squeeze the filling out to the edges. Voila, holiday treats! Cakes and regular cookies are such a cliche at this time of the year, so macaroons pack extra delight for your family or your sweetheart.

The Ford Focus SES reflects the penny pinching that hurts US carmakers, but it’s an improvement

By Warren Brown THE WASHINGTON POST

WASHINGTON POST

S

omewhere between birth and what is now the possible demise of the domestic automobile industry, “American” became a bad word. There is little doubt that the industry had much to do with this transformation. It has a way of snatching mediocrity from exceptionality. Just look at the 2009 Ford Focus SES coupe. It is one of the best subcompact cars sold in the United States, but it has exceptionally good disc brakes up front and mediocre drum brakes in the rear. It is the kind of self-defeating, cost-cutting craziness that Ford and its Detroit siblings have engaged in too often. The good news is that they’re doing much less of that kind of thing nowadays, a far cry from the really bad old days when, unchallenged by foreign rivals, they became fat and careless, more interested in pleasing Wall Street than in building quality cars. Now it’s a matter of avoidable gaffes, the kind of thing that opens the domestics to unfair ridicule, casting a long shadow over New Detroit,

which is genuinely dedicated to product innovation and improvement. In the front-wheel-drive Focus SES coupe, overall construction is solid, fit and finish are excellent, interior materials – although not as good as Volkswagen and Audi – are better than they’ve ever been. It’s also a joy to drive, wonderfully agile in city traffic and willing on high-speed highways, with a modest appetite for regular unleaded gasoline. Critics are fond of accusing the domestic industry of being a laggard in innovation. It is a bogus charge. General Motors pioneered a mobile emergency-communications system that is the envy of the global industry. Ford’s Microsoft/Sync infotainmentemergency communications system allows drivers to control a variety of devices with their voice alone. Here’s hoping the domestics weather the financial storm and Ford will get rid of drum brakes in the Focus SES as soon as it understands that consumers don’t mind paying extra for something that is demonstrably better.

13

Ford’s designers have given the 2009 Focus SES coupe a little jazz, nicely restyling the front and giving the rear something approaching funk.

But I’m very happy here at Spurs and in England. I love England and the English people. My team is doing much better under Harry Redknapp and I am enjoying every minute of it. For me, this is a win-win situation. I cannot lose. I love playing for Spurs, but to be associated with Real Madrid is, of course, very flattering. I was upset when Juande Ramos left because he gave me a chance in English football and for that I'll be forever grateful.”– AFP

Manager Scolari keeps his mouth shut as Terry’s red derails Chelsea bid AFP, Liverpool, England

helsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari took a vow of silence after captain John Terry was sent off in a goalless draw away to Everton which denied the Londoners first place in the Premier League. Instead it is Liverpool, Everton’s city rivals, who hold the Christmas number one position in the English football charts following Monday’s stalemate at Goodison Park. The draw saw Scolari’s side close to within a point of the leaders ahead of Chelsea’s clash with bottom-of-the-table West Bromwich Albion on Friday. Not that the Brazilian wanted to comment on that, or indeed much else, after referee Phil

Dowd showed England captain Terry a straight red card 10 minutes before half-time for a reckless challenge on Everton midfielder Leon Osman. Scolari failed to turn up for the post-match press conference, as did any of his backroom staff, for fear, according to a club spokesman, of saying something that would land him in trouble with the Football Association. “None of the management team feel able to come up,” the spokesman said. “They have issues with a number of decisions and feel it would be better if they did not comment.” Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, who made several fine saves, was rather more forthcoming. “I

think it’s a pity because we had more chances to be top of the league and we drew some games,” the Czech international said. “But that’s the way this season is going. If we won our games at home we would have been top with some gap. “This year the Premier League is such a good competition and Aston Villa are pushing up and everyone is trying to stay there.” Commenting on Terry’s sending-off, Cech added: “It was hard to see from where I was. “It’s hard for the ref to see exactly what happens because he has only a split second and the crowd are behind so it makes it more difficult. “He made a decision and we have to live with it. It’s a pity because we wanted to win the game and go top of the league

Manchester City in September was overturned on appeal but there seems little chance of Monday’s expulsion being rescinded. The England centre-half who is facing a three-match ban, caught Osman on his ankle and was shown a red card by Dowd. Everton manager David Moyes said: “My first reaction was that I thought it was reckless. “In my playing days I would have enjoyed tackling like that, but I think the referee got the big decisions right.” In the last four seasons the team which has topped the table at Christmas has gone on to win the title. But it was only when he met the man behind the trophies that he realised how clear-sighted he was about the future. “You don’t have to spend more than three minutes in his company to know that when he says he is going to do something, he will really set about it and is not going to put up with second best,” said Triesman.“We are in a good position in our group, that is self-evident. “But you never get the sense from Fabio that he thinks a job is over if it only is half done. “He will see this through to the very last match. There will be absolutely no give in that attitude and the players love it. “They all feel like winners and I don’t quite know when the England side last felt like that.” It may be a side issue for Capello but Triesman is also delighted the coach is happy to pass on his knowledge to younger English counterparts. England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce is the most obvious example but others are benefiting from his experience, too.

ootball Association chairman Lord Triesman has hailed Fabio Capello for getting rid of the “funfair” culture surrounding the England side. Capello took a bit of time to get his feet under the table after succeeding Steve McClaren 12 months ago but the second half of the year has seen the national team make rapid improvements. Four successive World Cup qualifying victories, including a superb away win in Croatia, were followed by a friendly triumph over Germany in Berlin last month, fuelling a belief England can be major contenders at South Africa 2010. Mindful of the times when such optimistic noises have emerged from the England camp, only for the reality to be a major disappointment, Triesman is wary of placing too much expectation on Capello’s players. However, he is willing to give the Italian his wholehearted endorsement. “Fabio has been absolutely brilliant,” said Triesman. “His seriousness is so transparent. nder-pressure Manchester City manager Mark Hughes insists he will still be at the helm come the January transfer window to take advantage of the club’s financial might. Sunday’s 2-1 defeat away to basement club West Bromwich Albion dropped City into the English Premier League relegation zone. However former Wales and Blackburn Rovers manager Hughes stressed he’d be given assurances by chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and owner Sheikh Mansour that he would still be in charge at Eastlands next month. And Hughes said that while he wanted to build for the long-term, City’s immediate plight would see him try to sign new players in January. “I think everyone understands there are certain areas of the squad which need strengthening and we will look to address those in the window,” he said. “We need to make sure we are positive, get the right players in that will have an immediate impact and, if we can do that, very quickly we will move forward. “I think there is a big project and a big plan here for the club moving forward.”

FINAL RECKONING High-flying Thailand take on Vietnam for Suzuki Cup

hailand are hoping to present their fans with an early Christmas gift of a victory when they take on Vietnam in the first leg of the Asean Football Federation’s Suzuki Cup final at the Rajamangala National stadium today. Three-time champions Thailand, reached the final of the regional competition formerly known as Tiger Cup for the second consecutive time after posting a 3-1 aggregate win over Indonesia in the two-leg semis. The Thais are aiming to reclaim the title they last won in 2002 and wipe out the memory of last year’s defeat to Singapore 2-1. The bitter loss came at a time when relations between the two countries were strained following the multi-billion sale of Shin Corporation to Temasek Holdings, the city state’s investment fund. Between Thailand and the title stand a Vietnamese side under the guidance of Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto. They produced a big upset when they downed title holders Singapore 1-0, thanks to substitute forward Nguyen Quang Hai’s counter-attacking strike, in the semi-finals. If the recent record against the Vietnamese is anything to go by, the Kingdom is firm favourite to claim its fourth title. Under the helm of former

The Thailand squad training for the final yesterday. Sunderland manager Peter Reid, the team has yet to lose to the Vietnamese. The Thais drew 2-2 in Hanoi, going on to overall victory in the T&T Cup last month, the veteran coach’s first tournament in charge of the team. Earlier in the group stage, Thailand registered a crushing 2-0 victory over Vietnam. Thailand will have to make do without the services of midfielder Suchao Nutnum, who is serving a one-game ban after picking up his second yellow card in the 2-1 second-leg win over Indonesia on Saturday. However, Sutee Suksomkit could return to the side: the experienced left-side midfielder has shaken off his injury. The 28-year-old Sutee, a deadball specialist, is relishing the chance to face the visitors

again after he scored an exquisite freekick to set Thailand on their way to a group-stage victory. “I’m certain that we can win the tournament. I’m also confident that I can score,” said Sutee. Thailand’s chances were also boosted by the return to form of striker Teeratep “Leesaw” Winotahi, who is bound for Belgium’s second-division club Lierse next month. Leesaw has a knack of scoring vital goals for the national team, as did he on Saturday when he led the Thai comeback with his first goal of the tournament to seal the win over Indonesia. Meanwhile, it was reported that new prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva would attend the game to support the team. Channel 7 and Star Sports will televise the match live from 7pm.

Cesc out for 3 months Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas could be out of action for as long as three months because of medial ligament damage to his right knee. The north London club, which already appears to be out of contention for the Premier League title, has said it will find out later yesterday how long Fabregas will be on the sidelines for. But The Sun newspaper reported that the Spain midfielder is definitely out of Arsenal's Champions League matches against Roma on February 24. – A P

ngland striker Michael Owen will not make a decision about his future with Newcastle United until the end of the season. While that means Owen, 29, will stay with Newcastle through the January transfer window, his long-term future remains uncertain when his current £103,000a-week deal expires at the season’s end. Owen, who is now free to talk to other clubs from January 1, would consider a pay-cut if he decided to stay at St James’ Park. “I have decided to make it clear that I am committed to the club until at least the end of this season, and I have informed them I do not want to make a decision about my future until that time,” Owen said. “I hope this will be seen as a positive step and not seen as being disloyal in any way.” The Daily Telegraph reported that Owen’s every move seems to be cleverly calculated but this latest decision is also a huge gamble. Should he score freely he will have all sorts of clubs seeking his services.

GAMBHIR HEARTBREAK Indian opener misses century as Test is drawn AFP, Mohali, India

ndia’s Gautam Gambhir missed his second century of the match by three runs as the second Test against England was drawn yesterday, giving the hosts a 1-0 series win. The left-hander, who scored 179 in the first innings, had made 97 in the second knock when he was caught at point off by Graeme Swann soon after lunch on the fifth day, signalling India’s declaration at 251-7. The tourists, set an improbable target of 403 in a minimum of 43 overs, preferred to play out time and were 64-1 from 28 overs when the match was called off at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium. A stalemate was on the cards after 80 overs were lost over the five days due to dense winter fog in the mornings and bad light in the evenings. The final day’s play yesterday, which was also delayed by two

hours and 30 minutes due to fog, was lit up by a stroke-filled 153-run stand for the fifth wicket between Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh. The duo, who resumed on the overnight score of 134-4, hammered 82 runs from 13 overs in the hour-long session before lunch.

Yuvraj hit a typically aggressive 86 off 91 balls, his fifth Test half-century studded with six boundaries and four sixes. Two of those sixes came off successive deliveries against Stuart Broad, the same bowler Yuvraj smashed for six sixes in a single over during the Twenty20 world championships in South Africa last year.Yuvraj fell soon after lunch, the third Indian batsman to be run out in the innings, while Dhoni gave Monty Panesar a return catch before he had scored. Gambhir, who was 80 at lunch, moved to 97 before he failed to keep down a cut off Swann and Bell took a tumbling catch at point. The 27-year-old Delhi opener compiled 1,134 runs from eight Tests in 2008, having scored three hundreds and as many half-centuries in his last eight innings. The best of Gambhir’s three centuries this year was the 206 he made against world champions Australia in New Delhi in October.

Gayle’s 197 saves WI A masterful 197 by Chris Gayle saved the West Indies and ensured a drawn series as New Zealand gave up their run chase yesterday with nine overs remaining in the second cricket Test in Napier. Facing a target of 312 in 60 overs, New Zealand passed the 200 mark with 16 overs left but dropped off the pace when Brendon McCullum, their last hard-hitting batsman, fell to a questionable dismissal. When captains Gayle and Daniel Vettori agreed to call the players in, New Zealand were 220 for five with Jesse Ryder not out on 59. The result meant both Tests were drawn and ensured the West Indies remained at seven in the world rankings, one place ahead of New Zealand. But the second Test could have gone down to the wire had McCullum not been given out. AFP

arat Safin’s former coach Peter Lundgren says he believes that his ex-pupil has one more season of ATP play remaining before the charismatic, streaky Russian finally calls it quits. “He is very much a player who relies on his motivation and if he doesn’t feel like it, he will stop playing. If you ask me I think next season will be his last,” said the 42-year-old Swede who has coached Safin, Roger Federer and 2006 Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis. Safin has decided to carry on in the game after threatening a possible retirement last month in Paris. He will team up with his sister Dinara Safina at the Hopman Cup in Australia from next Saturday. “Marat is still a world class player who has a lot more to give. On the court he can be a true artist if he is in a good mood – and a disaster if he’s in a bad mood,” Lundgren said.

assana Diarra has claimed Manchester City were interested in securing his services before he agreed a move to Real Madrid. The midfielder passed a medical with Real on Monday to pave the way for the completion of his transfer from Portsmouth, for a reported fee of £20million. City boss Mark Hughes previously intimated at a potential bid for 23-year-old Diarra, and the Frenchman has confirmed he received a lucrative offer from Eastlands. He told L’Equipe: “Were Manchester City keen to sign me? Yes, indeed. “On a financial level, I would have earned a lot more. I love the Premier League, but Real are very attractive. I believe I have earned respect.” The former Chelsea and Arsenal enforcer also spoke of his time in England’s top flight, while explaining that Real’s advances were too good to refuse amid a testing time at Fratton Park. e said: “I was in England for five years, and I have learnt a lot of things there. I became very attached to the Premier League. “You can’t leave it that easily. But Real came, and I was their priority. That makes you think. It is an honour. Portsmouth have some trouble. The club is to sell. I also read a lot of rubbish during the last days.”
