ineteen unlucky cabinet members may bring about the government’s downfall through a House dissolution by the middle of next year if Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva does not reshuffle his cabinet at that time, a renowned fortune-teller has warned. Meanwhile, another predicts that the Abhisit government will stay in power for more than a year. “Ten out of 36 cabinet members will probably have bad fortune while nine others may find themselves in a tense situation that can lead to Parliament being dissolved near the middle of next year,” says Phanuwat Phanwichartkul, president of Miracle Fengshui Company. “So far most of them – or up to 24 members – have good luck, so the government will enjoy happiness till February 5. Only 12 have bad luck now,” Phanuwat adds. But from April to May, things are likely to change as most of the 19 will have bad luck, which can probably see a House dissolution if the premier doesn’t reshuffle his cabinet. Moreover, Abhisit himself will meet a hapless fate after April, when his government will encounter insoluble problems, predicts Phanuwat. He warns the government to beware of bloodshed following protests in April, July and October if a new election is not

IF THE GOVT CAN PASS SEPTEMBER, I’M CERTAIN THAT IT WILL BE ABLE TO LAST THE FULL FOUR-YEAR TERM. Kornharis Buasuang held. “Abhisit’s horoscope shows that he’s clever, self-confident, quite stubborn and generous. This year is a lucky year for him, but he has to prepare well for the coming year. He

should be less stubborn so that he won’t fail in governing the country.” However, another famous astrologer, Astrology Academy director Kornharis Buasuang, predicts that Abhisit’s government will stay in power for more than a year as the political situation will improve from September. “If the government can pass September, I’m certain that it will be able to last the full fouryear term,” Kornharis says. Phanuwat also predicts that between 2010 and 2011 politics will take on a brighter side. Both fortune-tellers insist the political situation and economy will start getting better next year, but Thais and foreigners have to prepare for terrorism and natural disasters, especially earthquakes, in the country.

Good names and numbers “Next year is an unlucky year for people born in the year of the goat, so they must beware of health problems, accidents and complications in running a business. Those born in the year of the cock, small snake and rat will have a good year,” Phanuwat says. “Also, women whose Chinese horoscope ages end with the number 2, 5 or 8 and men whose ages end with 3, 6 or 9 should be careful next year. Add one year if you want to compare those ages with Thai ages.” Celebrities whose nicknames start with ‘Y’ or those known as ‘Yo Yak’ in the Thai alphabet are expected to experience job difficulties in 2009. But celebrities whose names start or end with S, H and L or ‘Lo Chula’ in the Thai alphabet will be lucky, Kornharis concludes.

EAR OF THE OX Paweena Vasanaruengsuk, armed with a diploma in astrology from Hamburg, has advice on how people from each zodiac sign should take care of their health in 2009. Paweena Vasanaruengsuk ARIES (March 21 – April 19): Headache, migraines, colds

and sinus are common health problems among Aries. Drink a lot of carrot juice and camomile herbal tea, both of which will save you trouble. TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Beware of a sore throat, neck strain, problematic metabolism and poor thyroid glands. To keep fit, eat a lot of fish and get a soft massage under your ears! GEMINI (May 21 – June 22): Your wrists are quite vulnera-

ble, so make sure you rest them when working in front of a computer screen. As insomnia can devastate your health, always avoid energy drinks. Regular exercise and pure, fresh air are a must to reduce the risk of getting respiratory disease.

CANCER (June 23 – July 22): Watch what you eat, because

gastrointestinal diseases are likely. A regular consumption of vitamins and supplementary diets can be really good for your health. LEO (July 23 – August 22): Because you stubbornly do

everything by yourself, you often end up with back pain. Other health risks include hypertension, heart disease and thrombosis. Avoid high-cholesterol foods and your health will improve. VIRGO (August 23 – September 20): If sleepless nights

upset you, take a bath with very warm water before you go to bed, and refrain from eating a heavy meal after 4pm. You are also advised to closely monitor the health of your stomach. LIBRA (September 21 – October 22): You need to take care of your kidneys by drinking between six and eight glasses of water each day, and also by eating a lot of green and yellow fruit. Pay special attention to facial care, and you will be able to say goodbye to pimples.

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 22): Revise your eating habits; stop unnecessarily suppressing the urge to pass a stool, or else constipation and haemorrhoids will haunt you. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 – December 20): Stop

drinking to avoid cirrhosis and alcoholism. Sagittarians also have a high risk of getting gallstones. For the sake of your health, eat good food and swallow vitamins. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): By the time you

approach midlife, bone and joint diseases will likely emerge. It would be best if you do a regular workout before you turn 35. Healthy food and yoga are also highly recommended. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): You should get a

hings aren’t likely to get better with 2009, the Year of the Ox. In fact, astrologers are predicting gloom across the country during the year. Political conflict will worsen and the economy will suffer, with recovery being slow, says Paweena Vasanaruengsuk, who just graduated with a diploma from the Hamburg School of Astrology. The symbolic planet Admetos, which stands for blocks, death and parting, will “settle in the kingdom” for quite a while. “If you think the airport closures and mobs are bad, then next year will be worse,” Paweena warns. Protests will also spread. She warns people to be selfsufficient, control their emotions and choose their words. Everything must be taken into account when anything is said as small problems or arguments can escalate into chaos. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will face the most exhausting mission in his life. “There will be things happening to him that he can’t possibly control,” Paweena says. With the influence of Admetos, special projects will take a long time to develop. And no matter what, the economy will worsen – like a sick tree that can’t grow.

Having a ball Workers put the finishing touches on a dazzling new Waterford Crystal ball that will drop in Times Square to signal the start of the new year and then remain on display as a tourist attraction. The new ball – 3.66 metres in diametre, weighing nearly 5,443 kilograms, and covered with 2,668 Waterford Crystal triangles – has a new, permanent home on the roof of One Times Square. “Now it’s going to be up there shining throughout the year,” said Tim Tompkins, president of the Times Square Alliance. “I really believe it’s going to be the next Empire State Building.” The project of creating a permanent perch for the ball took a year to complete and cost about US$5 million (Bt172 million). Because of the massive sphere’s weight and size, engineers had to build a new roof structure and reinforce the steel columns going down to the 16th floor. The ball will drop from a 43-metre mast that was also specially made and taller than the mast used previously. AP

HE LOST JOB, WIFE BEFORE ATTACK Court had made gunman pay thousands of dollars to his ex; he was trying to come up with the money two days before his Christmas Eve massacre A P , Montrose, California

ruce and Sylvia Pardo started the new year in 2006 with all signs pointing to a bright future – an upcoming marriage, a combined income of about US$150,000 (Bt5.2 million), a $500,000 home on a quiet cul-de-sac and a beloved dog, Saki. But things quickly turned sour, and divorce documents paint a bitter picture of Bruce Pardo’s increasing desperation as he lost first his wife, then his job and finally the dog. Pardo’s downward slide ended on Christmas Eve, when the 45-year-old electrical engineer donned a Santa suit and

massacred nine people at his former in-laws’ house in Covina, where a family Christmas party was under way. He then used a homemade device disguised as a present to spray racing fuel that quickly sent the home up in flames.

Heavily in debt Pardo had planned to flee to Canada following the killing spree but suffered third-degree burns in the fire – which melted part of the Santa suit to him – and decided to kill himself instead. Pardo was making $122,000 a year as an electrical engi-

neer. But by December 2007, Sylvia Pardo was sleeping in another room and spending weekends with her parents. Two months later she told him she wanted a divorce. In July, Pardo lost his job and soon was drowning in debt. He begged the court to grant him spousal support until he could find employment. Instead, the court ordered Pardo to pay his ex-wife $1,785 a month in spousal support, plus $3,570 for past payments. Pardo got the house, but he also had to pay his ex-wife $10,000, return her valuable diamond wedding ring and give her custody of the dog. Two days before the killings, he told his attorney he was still trying to come up with the money.

Britain’s Prince Edward was in hot water with animal rights charities yesterday after using a stick to break up a dog fight. Edward, Queen Elizabeth’s youngest child, was pictured in newspapers waving the 1.2metre stick at the gundogs. They were fighting over a dead pheasant during a shooting outing that also included Prince Philip and Prince William, second in line to the throne. A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “It has not been determined that he did strike the dog.” But Barry Hugill, spokesman for the League Against Cruel Sports, said: “People in blood sports tend to show a complete disregard for the welfare of animals. He has set a truly sickening example.”

Killer shark Australian authorities said they will not attempt to hunt down a shark that killed a swimmer, as reports said the victim would not have wanted the predator to die. Police suspect that Brian Guest, 51, was taken by a shark as he was snorkelling. “We could hunt down every shark from here to eternity without knowing whether we had the right one,” Senior Sergeant Greg Trew said. – AFP

Homes that breathe Low-energy houses help Austrians stop sending money up in smoke

By Albert Otti DEUTSCHE PRESSEA G E N T U R ,Vienna

T

emperatures may be falling and energy prices are still high, but an increasing number of Austrians living in low-energy houses have little to worry about this winter. Martin Mueller, 40, his wife Barbara, 35, and his children have been living in a so-called “passive house” in Perchtoldsdorf, just outside Vienna, since 2003. Unlike conventional buildings, such houses need hardly any heating and cooling, but

draw energy from sunlight, the earth and the people dwelling within. The house’s air duct system draws fresh air from the outside and heats it up a few degrees as it ran down a pipe to the ground and then on into the cellar. There, it flows through a heat exchanger and permeates every single room in the house through holes near the ceiling, ensuring a near-constant temperature of 21 degrees Celsius. The heat stays inside thanks to triple-pane glass windows and wooden walls that have been insulated with cellulose. Extra warmth is provided by people giving off body heat, by household activities such as cooking and by sunlight coming through big win-

dows on the south side of the building. Although many passive houses have no additional heating, Mueller decided to install a small heater that burns wood pellets and turns itself on for short periods during the cold winter nights. The family’s heating and electricity bills have dropped to a mere ¤400 (Bt19,200) annually over the ¤960 they used to pay when they lived in an 80-square-metre flat. The first passive houses were built in the early 1990s in Germany, where more than 10,000 such residential buildings have since been constructed, according to the Passivhaus Institut in Darmstadt, Germany. With 4,000 such buildings,

Austria has the highest percapita rate of low-energy houses in the world and regional governments are subsidising low-energy houses, making the switch increasingly popular. Austria's westernmost province, Vorarlberg, now only subsidises the construction of apartment buildings if they are low-energy. In Vienna, 24 per cent of new housing constructed in 2009 will have no oil or gas-burning heating. But although the financial incentives are important, passive house owners such as the Mueller family say they also enjoy other benefits. Even if windows are closed at night, the air is fresh in the morning, and the constant ventilation prevents mould in the bathroom.

THOUGH CLOSED UP AT NIGHT,THE AIR IS FRESH IN THE MORNING,AND THE CONSTANT VENTILATION PREVENTS MOULD IN THE BATHROOM.

AT WORK 0.629 Tales of the father THE PERCENTAGE at which China’s population grew in 2008, bolstering a tally of 1.33 billion people.

Chinese migrants’ rise from rags to riches in Thailand is at the heart of ‘A-Pa’ By Kupluthai Pungkanon D A I LY X P R E S S

onfucian family values and persevering through adversity are the themes flowing through “A-Pa”, an historical novel by Chitra Konuntakiet that tracks the careers of some of Thailand’s most successful businessmen. An acknowledged expert on the Teow Chao community, Chitra has written more than 20 books on traditions and other aspects of Chinese history and culture. Among the titles that have collectively sold 400,000 copies are “Chinese Knowledge from the Old Man”, “Chinese Children” and “Nine Philosophy Stories”. “A-Pa” – the title is the term for father – is fiction based on fact, an account of Chinese who migrated to Thailand a century ago with little more than blankets and the clothes on their backs. Over the course of several generations, their families prospered – despite continuous hardships. “A-Pa” focuses on seven characters who are amalgamations of more than 30 actual people, among them Chin Sophonpanich, Kitja Konuntakiet, Vichit Mussyawanich, Utan Taechapaiboon and members of the Ieumsuree, Wanglee and Uewattanasakul clans. Their stories are told in both entertaining and insightful fashion, with much to teach about Chinese values and practices. It is the result, says Chitra, of a lifetime’s research – all her own.

“People have told me I was fortunate to have an elderly father. He had me when he was 50. “He was a great source for me, since by the time I’d grown up he was retired, and I spent lots of time with him. That’s how I came up with my first book.” For “A-Pa” she read through hundreds of the keepsake books that families distribute at funerals. Often she didn’t know the deceased, but their life histories were inspiring nonetheless. “There are parts in the book I’m really proud of,” Chitra says. “The best part is how the

ARIES March 21-April 19

You’ll be drawn to unusual partners who are looking for a more unconventional relationship. Be sure you are fully prepared to get involved in the capacity that is being asked of you before you make a move in a direction of intimacy. TAURUS April 20-May 20

XTRA

A LAND OF LEGENDS >> China and its traditions are

fertile subjects for writers, Chitra points out, advising anyone who wants to try it to pay careful attention to the details. >> “There is a vast differences

in the books coming out – some are true, some aren’t, some are true in places, and some have many versions.” >> Buy “A-Pa” for Bt370 at any leading bookstore.

Chinese chose to live in Thailand, how they were ready to adapt. “They brought with them traditions that see through the eyes and read through the heart – diligence, patience, honesty and gratitude.”

Don’t test your sensuous skills on just anyone. You have to be certain that the person you are going to become intimate with is not just leading you on or has ulterior motives. Take your time and get to know whoever attracts you most. GEMINI May 21-June 20

You’ll be a creative and provocative lover, attracting partners looking for an up close and personal connection that promises innovative encounters, leading to an adventure. Enjoy, but don't forget to play it safe and use protection. CANCER June 21-July 22

Don’t believe everything you hear, especially when it comes to picking a partner. Take your time to find out his or her background, beliefs and ideals before you become too attached and are tempted to give up your own traditions and lifestyle. LEO July 23-August 22

Don’t allow yourself to be influenced or caused to make a commitment that you aren't going to want to complete because of his or her financial position. You have to be true to both yourself and the partner involved as to your motives. VIRGO August 23-September 22

You’ll have lots of time to become serious. For the time being, you should be enjoying your friends and building good solid relationships with people who could potentially become intricate parts of your life in the not-too-distant future. LIBRA September 23-October 22

You’ll find love in the most unusual places. Get out and do things that involve humanitarian services and you will be inspired and fall for someone whom you admire, respect and are attracted to spiritually, physically and emotionally. SCORPIO October 23-November 21

Don’t trust someone who is coming on too strong or promising you too much. Chances are good that this person is not being honest with you about his or her background, future or intentions. Listen but question his or her motives. SAGITTARIUS November 22-December 21

Travel or do something that is out of the normal for you and you will bump into someone looking for the same things you are. Emotions mixed with a little inventive adventure will result in a passionate encounter. CAPRICORN December 22-January 19

Someone from your past will make you realise what you need in your life to achieve personal peace and happiness. It's the people you can trust whom you need to bring closer and the ones you can’t by whom you must not be enticed. AQUARIUS January 20-February 18

You may have too many choices and this will lead to confusion that may get you into trouble. Stay true to the person who has always supported you and stood by your side and you won't make a terrible and costly mistake. AQUARIUS January 20-February 18

Keep things out in the open. As soon as you get involved with anyone who still has an attachment to someone else, you will be in over your head. You must be smart and choose partners who are free and clear of past commitments.

Bad shoulder to keep Bryans away Too many exhibitions and perhaps not enough rest may have helped contribute to the pullout of the American Bryan brothers from the January 5 start in Chennai of the 2009 ATP season. The 30-year-old twins gave the bad news to Indian organisers of an event where the singles field is headed by Nikolay Davydenko, whose only previous experience at the tournament was a firstround loss in 2001. The world No 2 Bryan pair could now face a fight to get Bob ready for the Australian Open starting in three weeks. The side played in exhibitions during the December “off season” with Mike sometimes substituting on serve for his twin with few in the American crowds noticing a difference. – DPA

Mitsubishi aim to lift gloom Japanese manufacturers Mitsubishi aim to lift the recent gloom which has enveloped the country’s motorsport industry by clinching an eighth successive Dakar Rally title next month. The gruelling two-week race, which gets underway on January 3, has been switched from Africa to the relative stability of Argentina and Chile after the 2008 edition was cancelled because of security fears.

It was the first cancellation in the history of the race and was sparked by the murder of four French tourists in Mauritania. Mitsubishi have won the last seven races with French driver Stephane Peterhansel winning in 2004, 2005 and 2007 with compatriot and former skiing ace Luc Alphand taking the 2006 title. – AFP

Thai footballers celebrate their goal against Vietnam in the second leg final of the Suzuki Cup.

Le Cong Vinh’s dramatic equaliser seals Thailand’s fate in Suzuki Cup DAILY XPRESS

T

hailand’s dream of winning a record-breaking fourth title in the Asean Championship were dashed after a thrilling 1-1 draw in the second leg final in Hanoi yesterday. Thailand needed to win the game by at least a one-goal margin if they were to stand a chance of reclaiming the title they last won in 2002 following a 2-1 loss to the Vietnamese in the home tie. With Thailand holding a 1-0 lead through Teerasil Dangda’s first-half effort, the game appeared set for extra-time but the hosts’ star striker Le Cong Vinh popped up at the right moment to deliver a perfect header into the far corner, which was suffi-

cient for the communist country to win the first major title in a decade. Considering that the awaygoal rule does not count in deciding the winners, the Thai team approached the game with the conviction that the tie was far from over. In the pressure-cooker atmosphere of the My Dinh Stadium, where the crowd was packed to full capacity, neither side was able to establish their foothold in the early stages of the game. Both sides continued giving the ball away too easily as the game wore on. Given such poor quality of play, it seemed difficult for the opening to come by, let alone the goal. However, the Thais somehow

managed to conjure up a goal out of nothing with the first real opportunity of the match midway through the first half. Sutee Suksomkit launched a searching ball into the penalty area from a free kick near the halfway line and Teerasil leapt high to head home, with the small group of away supporters going wild in celebration. The home goalie Duong Hong Son, whose heroic performance helped his side upset the Thais in the first leg, had to take the blame for the goal. He darted in front to cut out the cross but was beaten to the ball by Teerasil. Teerasil’s fourth goal in the tournament put the Thais on level terms in the aggregate score and the game would go into the extra time if the scoreline remained unchanged. Firstly, star striker Cong Vinh nearly pulled off the same trick as he did in the away tie when he sent a curling shot from just outside the area centimetres wide of the far post. Huynh Thanh then almost put his side back in front at the

stroke of half-time, making a strong run into the penalty area after a beautiful exchange but dragged his shot agonisingly off target from barely twelve yards. The Vietnamese came out of the dressing room with renewed vigour, subjecting the visitors to heavy pressure right from the restart. Nevertheless, Thailand stood firm and even threatened to extend the lead when Teerasil and Suchao Nutnum combined well before the latter fired a fierce shot on target but Hong Son was equal to the task. Suree Sukha then almost shocked the home crowd only eight minutes from time when he met Datsakorn Thonglao’s corner with a header which was cleared on the line by a defender covering the far post. Then, came Cong Vinh’s dramatic equaliser and it was curtains for Thailand.

BORO MANAGER ON HIS TEAM’S TROUBLES IN THE LEAGUE

Sizzling Gerrard stars in rout of Newcastle AFP, Newcastle, England

L

iverpool maintained their grip on first place the Premier League table with a stunning 5-1 win against a toothless Newcastle United here at St James’ Park yesterday. Reds captain Steven Gerrard scored twice and had had it not been for Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given, the hosts could have been on the wrong end of a double-figure disaster after being completely outclassed. Republic of Ireland international Given made five world-class saves in 10 minutes to prevent Newcastle from total capitulation before the midway point of the first-half. The Arsenal target began his run of jaw-dropping stops in the 10th minute as he pushed away a fierce near post strike from lone Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt. Within a minute England midfielder Gerrard weaved his way around three United defenders only to see his left foot shot palmed away by Given. However, the onslaught had only just begun and in the 14th minute the Magpies No 1 denied Gerrard again as he sprung to his right to claw away a rising left footed shot. But that stunning save was eclipsed by an even better show of agility five minutes

later as Given denied the Brazilian midfielder Lucas from point-blank range. When the former Gremio player saw his header, from a Gerrard corner, beaten away by the Newcastle goalkeeper moments later, the visitors must have begun to fear this would be no easy win on Tyneside. United, for their part, had barely managed to break beyond halfway and the Magpies’ owner, Mike Ashley, must have been wondering whether he had been premature in announcing his decision to take the club off the market for the foreseeable future. If his aim had been to usher in a period of calm at St James’ Park, the effect had not extended to the pitch. Liverpool continued to press forward at will and two goals before half-time appeared to end the game as a contest. Inevitably, given his sensational start to the match, it was Gerrard who broke the deadlock in the 31st minute when he drilled Yossi Benayoun’s pass in off the post. Poor Given had no opportunity to reprise his heroics and the Irishman was stranded again five minutes later when defender Sami Hyypia was given the freedom of the Newcastle penalty area to head home Gerrard’s corner.

Valencia – scorer of three goals in 20 matches this term – would cost Real ¤17.5million and they could face stiff competition for the former Villarreal player from several of Wigan’s Premier League rivals. Meanwhile, new Real Madrid coach Juande Ramos will have to choose between new signings Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Lassana Diarra for the Champions League knockout stage. Real recently signed Huntelaar and Diarra under the assumption that both would be able to play in the Champions League. However, the Spanish paper Marca said Uefa’s rules clearly state that a club can register three new players from the round of 16 onwards, but only one player who has taken part in the Uefa Cup.

NEWS OF THE WORLD

Manchester City are ready to test Newcastle owner Mike Ashley’s resolve by making a £4million bid for Michael Owen. West Ham’s Craig Bellamy is also on City’s shopping list. Arsene Wenger will start radical transfer-window surgery with a threepronged raid on Newcastle with Shay Given, Steven Taylor and Charles N’Zogbia his targets. Jimmy Bullard has been offered a 20 per cent pay cut to stay at Fulham. Tottenham need £24million is they are to tempt Zenit St Petersburg to part with Andrei Arshavin. Joseph Yobo is set to stay at Everton and sign a new five-year deal worth £50,000 a week.

Capello shrugs off comparisons with legendary English manager AFP, London

abio Capello insisted yesterday that he does not yet deserve to be compared to Sir Alf Ramsey, the man he hopes to emulate by transforming England into world-beaters. Ramsey coached England to their only World Cup success back in 1966 but Capello’s impressive first year in charge of the national squad already has many observers tipping the Italian’s team as champions in South Africa in 2010. But Capello says there is plenty of work ahead if the England of Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Theo Walcott and Wayne Rooney are to be kings of the world. “Someone spoke to me about this big manager [Ramsey] but we have to wait. He’s up here – I’m still down here,” said Capello. “It’s a very long way to arrive at the level of Sir Alf Ramsey – it is difficult and very, very long.” Capello has overseen a dramatic improvement in the national team’s fortunes in 2008. After the low of failing to qualify for Euro 2008 under Steve McClaren, England have reached the end of the year on course for the World Cup finals boasting a perfect record in the qualifiers. For good measure, they ended 2008 with a 2-1 friendly win

The first 11 was new players, some players who hadn’t played a lot of games, and we won and this is very important for the future. “We had another [stepping] stone for the future.” Capello added that, unlike McClaren, he was determined to maintain barriers between himself and his players. “It’s not important to play cards or games with the players. one of the lads,” said the Italian. “The important thing is respect. I always say a manager is one against 24 always – there is one boss, one leader being judged by 24 players, in every moment he is under scrutiny and it’s important the players know that is my role. The leader is the leader.” Meanwhile, striker Denilson reportedly wants to play again in Europe. Denilson once commanded the world-record transfer fee, costing Real Betis 21.5 million pounds to sign him from Sao Paulo in 1998. I have received offers from teams in England, Greece, Turkey and Germany,” Denilson said.

ewcastle owner Mike Ashley says the club is no longer for sale after failing to find a buyer. The billionaire sportswear magnate has decided to push ahead with his own plans for the club following a fruitless threemonth campaign to find an interested party. Ashley engaged the services of investment bank Seymour

Pierce after deciding to call it a day at St James’ Park in September following mass protests against his regime in the wake of Kevin Keegan’s departure as manager. Michael Ord, a spokesman for the Newcastle United Supporters’ Club, insists the news will be unwelcome to many on Tyneside. Yesterday’s game against Liverpool had been earmarked

as a chance to pay tribute to former manager Sir Bobby Robson, who turns 76 next month, but Ord believes the occasion may now be overshadowed. “It’s the most unwelcome late Christmas present Newcastle United supporters could have,” he said. “The timing of this stinks. Today Newcastle fans are celebrating the life of a great, great football man. Ashley is just trying to rain on that parade.”

Manchester City are ready to start the New Year by spending £12million on Spain’s Euro 2008 winne Marcos Senna, currently with Villarreal. Real Madrid have offered £15million for Wigan winger Antonio Valencia after finally admitting defeat in their chase to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. Man City are prepared to offer Portsmouth £20million for Jermain Defoe, with Spurs and Aston Villa also interested in the striker. Steve Bruce says he “hasn’t given up hope” that Emile Heskey will stay at Wigan. Bayern Munich want Chelsea’s Florent Malouda with Jurgen Klinsmann ready to launch an £8million bid. Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is checking out Deportivo La Coruna winger Angel Lafita, with Jermaine Pennant expected to leave in January. Newcastle, Boro and Sunderland have joined Everton in the chase of Paris St Germain midfielder Mamadou Sakho. Jose Mourinho has emerged as a managerial target for Man City.

FINE FIGHTBACK Duminy comes of age to produce an astonishing innings AGENCIES, Melbourne

remarkable ninth-wicket partnership of 180, the third best in Test history, saw South Africa establish an unlikely first-innings lead of 65 in Melbourne. Jean Paul Duminy was the last wicket to fall for a magnificent 166 after South Africa had started day three on a worrying 1987, still 196 behind. The Duminy-led fightback included Paul Harris’s 39 and an extraordinary 76 from Dale Steyn in a total of 459. At stumps, Australia were 4-0 in the early stages of their second innings. Duminy had made his Test debut in Perth, where he hit a wonderfully composed 50 not out in South Africa’s famous successful chase of 414. The 24-year-old trumped that effort, though, with this terrific display of concentration in

before a disbelieving packed crowd at the MCG, spanned nearly 64 overs from well before lunch until beyond the tea interval. It was a sorry day for Australia’s bowlers, who desperately missed the cutting

edge of Brett Lee. The experienced paceman missed the day’s play with a sore left foot. And although Lee has been upstaged by Peter Siddle and Mitchell Johnson in the series, those two seemed to panic without the presence of the experienced attack leader. Duminy allowed Steyn – dropped three times by Australia in the field – to hit most of the extravagant shots in their stand, as he mainly nudged and scampered towards three figures. He spent half an hour in the 90s and there was relief when he cut Siddle through gully for four, raised both arms and kissed his helmet badge. His team-mates had come down to the boundary edge to applaud his terrific effort. Steyn’s best moments came when he hit Johnson for two straight drives for four and mirrored the shot off Siddle to bring up his half-century. His personal memories will also include the towering six struck off Nathan Hauritz.

130-run onslaught by Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum led New Zealand to victory over the West Indies by 36 runs in their Twenty20 match yesterday. Man-of-the-match Ryder posted 62 and McCullum 59 in a record Twenty20 stand for New Zealand. It came at a shade under 12 runs an over and ensured a formidable target as New Zealand reached 191 for nine, despite a meltdown after the opening partnership ended. When the West Indies looked to their talisman Chris Gayle to save the day – after he had dismissed both Ryder and McCullum – they found his usually dependable batting talents were absent. He was out for one in the second over and the West Indies never came close to the required run rate, finishing at 155 for seven.

Mahela Jayawardene takes a run during his innings of 129.

ahela Jayawardene smashed a solid 129 not out to put Sri Lanka in a winning position on the third day of the opening Test against Bangladesh yesterday. The Sri Lankan captain hit one six and 15 fours in his 24th Test hundred to help his side post 291-4 in the second in-

nings at stumps for a massive overall lead of 406. The tourists were in trouble at 18-2 before Jayawardene bolstered the innings with a 135run stand for the third wicket with Kumar Sangakkara (67) and 138 for the next with Thilan Samaraweera (62). Paceman Mahbubul Alam struck in the eighth over when

he trapped Malinda Warnapura (eight) leg-before and Mashrafe Mortaza bowled Michael Vandort (six) in the next over. Jayawardene, 31, and lefthanded Sangakkara then kept the Bangladeshi attack at bay with their responsible knocks, batting comfortably against both pace and spin.

Bangladesh were earlier dismissed for 178 in their first innings in reply to Sri Lanka’s 293 after having resumed at 177-9. Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan finished with 649. The match will resume tomorrow after a rest day today because of Bangladesh’s election.

ustralian maxi yacht Wild Oats XI won the 64th Sydney to Hobart race for a record fourth time yesterday, just narrowly missing out on breaking its own race record time. The 30-metre maxi finished the 628-nautical mile race down the Australian eastern seaboard in one day 20 hours 34 minutes and 14 seconds. Wild Oats XI holds the race record of one day 18 hours 40 minutes 10 seconds set in its 2005 win. The record was under threat up until early yesterday when the prevailing winds subsided in the Derwent River. Another maxi, 2003 winner Skandia, finished second, one

umph was not without incident. The Mark Richards-skippered vessel was forced to stop temporarily late Saturday to

free a two-metre shark from its rudder. Richards said the collision with the shark proved a godsend. He said his boat had underperformed after picking something up on its keel leaving Sydney Harbour on Friday. Richards said having to stop and reverse to clear the shark also removed whatever was dragging on the yacht. “The second we got him off, the boat was back to its old self,” Richards said. He said his crew knew upon leaving Sydney Harbour there was something impeding the yacht. The skipper said he had contemplated sending a crew member over the side to inspect the keel. “But we just never stopped. When you are doing 20-25 knots all the time it’s a hard thing to work out what to actually do,” he said.
