Cop-robber surrenders worker turned himself in to police yesterday morning after he stole the effigy of a policeman in a drunken dare. He was spotted loading the fake traffic cop onto a Toyota pickup truck at the Ratchawipa intersection of Wongsawang road in Chatuchak district. Police officers traced the pickup to a garage in Lat Phrao district’s Lat Pla Khlao area, and found the effigy standing out front. At 10am, Thaweewut Tonkham, still drunk, tottered into Prachacheun police station.

Drunken dare Thaweewut, who saluted the effigy as a gesture of apology, told police that after drink-

ing with friends until midnight Tuesday, he made a delivery of parts to Mor Chit Bus Terminal. On the way back, he spotted the effigy, stole it to meet a challenge made by friends, and placed it outside the garage as proof of his feat. Thaweewut is facing the charge of stealing at night-time which carries a punishment of up to five years in jail or a Bt2,000-Bt10,000 fine. The police effigies stand at various intersections to signal the routes to police stations or government offices, said traffic-police commander Pol Maj-General Weerapat Tansrisakul. woman, between 16 and 20 years of age, was stripped naked and burnt alive at the stake in Papua New Guinea, possibly because she practised witchcraft, newspapers reported yesterday. The woman was blindfolded, gagged and lashed to a pole on a pyre of tyres and wood on a garbage dump, a witness said, adding that several men then poured petrol over her and set the pyre ablaze. The Post-Courier said that speculation centred on the woman being accused of sorcery, adultery or of passing on HIV/Aids to one of her killers. In 2006, a UN report said PNG’s population of six million was facing a catastrophe, accounting for 90 per cent of HIV infections in the Oceania region.

Farahnaz Ispahani, a spokesman for Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party and a friend of the family, said Bakhtawar had captured much of the nation’s grief in her song. “It is an emotional tribute and a beautiful song from a daughter to a mother’s memory,” he said. The song also describes the earlier political assassinations of other family members. Bakhtawar, 18, is one of three children of the late Bhutto and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who is now the president of Pakistan. She is studying at the University of Edinburgh.

Edward Pfiester said a fellow co-worker had alerted his superiors to Robert Sanchez’s habit of sending text messages on his mobile phone while at the controls of his Metrolink train, in violation of safety rules. Despite the warning, Pfiester added, the Connex subsidiary of France’s Veolia Transport company took no action, making it liable along with Sanchez for the 24 deaths in the September 12 accident. The National Transportation Safety Board blamed the accident on human error as Sanchez missed a stop signal while text messaging seconds before the crash.

ive your children a great start in life and a taste of the careers they can choose when they’re older by taking them along to “Kratuk Tom Kid” (“Thinking Motivation”), which runs at CentralWorld’s Eden Zone tomorrow until Sunday. The event is being staged to celebrate National Children’s Day by a variety of organisations under the leadership of the Office of Knowledge Management and Development (OKMD). Instead of featuring its usual luxurious designs, the Thailand Creative and Design Centre has simplified its activities, inviting children and parents to design and make their own T-shirts. “It’s all about imagination,” says Chutima Temrungsri from OKMD, who’s organising the event. All the activities are interactive so that children can enjoy first-hand experiences in different fields. “Kids don’t want to learn from exhibitions filled with text,” Chutima says.

Experimentation The Thailand Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences has remodelled a simplified version of a lab where children can see what it’s like to work with bioscopes and tiny living organisms. A performance explaining physiology to the young audience will also be featured. Uncle Bua-rai, the cartoonist who created “Mangkorn Fai Mai Rian Nangsue” (“The Dragon Doesn’t Go to School”),

Toni Morrison critic Elvis Mitchell, and also includes a documentary film and a book of the portraits with excerpts from interviews Mitchell conducted focusing on what it means to be black in the US today. The photo exhibition seems largely a commercial enterprise – less about art than about celebrity. But the portraits are possibly more telling than the subjects knew. Vernon Jordan, a former adviser to Bill Clinton, stares into the camera with either impatience or considerable self-importance. “When I was a black leader I had a constituency,” he says in part of the film screening on monitors. “When I moved into law and turned to banking I was ... a leading black. And there’s a difference.” A carefully coiffed Serena Williams seems placid enough, though even at rest the tennis star’s biceps look powerful. She speaks of the humiliation she felt when white spectators booed her during an early

match. She’s also careful to say she won it. Colin Powell looks avuncular and benign, though in the book he speaks with distaste about being forced to send troops into South Central Los Angeles to quell the 1992 riots that followed Rodney King’s beating by the police. Mitchell says one purpose of this project was to “track the black experience in America”. Then why choose only those who have made it to the top of the heap? Another aim was to overturn the negative connotation of the term “black list”. If only it weren’t just as obsessed with exclusion.

Off the couch, now! Weight training improves strength and mobility, and you don’t need a gym By Nina C Zimmermann DEUTSCHE PRESSE-AGENTUR Bonn, Germany

T

he average gym-goer is no longer a body-builder with bulging thighs and arms as more people take doctors’ advice to take up weight training as a way of preventing problems. “Everyone can be helped by a modern, health-oriented training programme that can increase body strength or prevent its loss as you get older,” says Christoph Eifler of the High School for Preventative and Health Management

in Saarbrucken, Germany. “Any kind of movement is better than none,” points out Ray Zipter of Germany’s Fitness and Aerobic Association. Being fit is the same as having good teeth, he says, so if you want to stay healthy and avoid such ailments as osteoporosis, weight training is just what you need. Before you head to the gym, however, a doctor should determine how fit you are. This applies in particular to people who haven’t engaged in physical exercise before or who are returning to

training after a long break. “Anyone with a cardiac or blood-circulation illness should be very careful about how much they train,” says Guenther Kurz, a sport physician at the University of Karlsruhe. As you progress in your training you can increase the size of the weights but, “more important than heavy weights or long training sessions is regular training”, says Eifler. If you want the option of exercising at home, ask your gym instructor to show you a few alternative exercises that

don’t require a machine. “Exercises for the torso, back and stomach are very suitable for the home,” says Kurz. Any kind of press-ups is useful. If you’re not ready for the traditional version on the floor, try doing press-ups in a standing position against a wall. Kurz also recommends kneeling down with both palms on the floor, and then raising the left arm and right leg at the same time. After holding that position for a short time, change to right arm and left leg.

How do I get enough protein and water? A recent body mass index (BMI) test showed that my 165-centimetre height and 51.2-kilogram weight gives me a BMI of 18.8 – which is okay. However, the results suggest that I’m a bit short of protein and water. I’m not a vegetarian but I don’t like eating meat and usually drink water only when I’m thirsty. Do I have to worry about that? – Keeping healthy in Bangkok

A BMI of 18.8 is indeed in the normal range – 18.5 to 25 kg/m2. And as BMI is a fairly reliable indicator of your bodyfat level, you don’t have to worry on that score. Your results for protein refer to the body protein used for the calculation of skeletal muscle mass. Upping your protein intake is unlikely to increase your muscle mass if you are sedentary. Instead, I would recommend that you increase the

amount of exercise you do. If you normally prefer eating vegetable protein, stick to that, but vary your protein diet with beans, peas, etc, so that you get all the amino acids your body needs. As to your slightly low water content, I don’t think there is any problem. It’s possible that you were slightly dehydrated on the day you were tested. Normally people need six to eight glasses of water per day.

Allay your cancer worries Your concerns about cancer can be dispelled in a talk by experts from Piyavate Hospital and Tria about the latest technology for assessing your genetic makeup. That will be followed up with tips on treatment. The first 100 people to register get a free bone-density check-up, and everyone gets a 50-per-cent discount on a knee C-ray. Call (02) 635 5555.

T

he seaside resort of Pattaya celebrated the arrival of 2009 with a magnificent display of 20,000 fireworks over Bali Hai pier, as Thais and foreigners gathered for the countdown and joined in wishing each other a happy new year. Earlier in the evening, the main stage throbbed with the talent from “The Star 4”, along with Playground, who played their hits “Ploy Wang” and “Kungfu”. They were followed by Pancake, who rocked with “Set

Nueng” and “Nang Rai”. Hip-hop trio Buddha Bless rapped their way through “Pak Takhrai” and “Jai Yen Yen Lamyong”. As midnight neared, A-Time Media’s four DJs – Moddam, Un, Chao Chao and Ekkie – came out on stage with all artists, as well as Wittaya Khunpluem, chief executive of the Chon Buri Provincial Administrative Organisation and Pattaya Mayor Ittipon Khunpluem to start the countdown. The night wrapped with shows by Boy Peacemaker and Paradox. Paradox was one of the closing acts after the fireworks at midnight.

Buddha Bless, above, and Playground, right, were also among the acts taking the Pattaya stage.

Super sub O’Hara inspires Tottenham against Burnley in League Cup clash AP, London

Man City owner replaces Roman Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich slipped from first to third in British football’s rich list, replaced at the top by the man behind Manchester City, Sheik Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The annual list compiled by the football magazine FourFourTwo puts Sheik Mansour at the top with a personal fortune of £15 billion. Lakshmi Mittal, who has invested in Queens Park Rangers, is second with 12.5 billion. The magazine estimates Abramovich’s wealth at £7 billion. – AP

T

ottenham substitute Jamie O’Hara scored one goal and set up two others to lead the defending League Cup champions to a 4-1 win over Burnley in the first-leg semi-final on Tuesday. Spurs played poorly in the first half and trailed the League Championship promotion contenders from the 15th minute, but manager Harry Redknapp barracked his team at half-time and sent on O’Hara for the ineffective David Bentley. Within two minutes, the midfielder hit a corner kick for Michael Dawson to head in and shot through goalkeeper Brian Jensen’s legs five minutes later. Roman Pavlyuchenko added a third goal in the 65th and mo-

ments later Burnley defender Michael Duff headed a free kick by O’Hara past his own goalkeeper. “At half-time, you could not see that result coming for sure,” Redknapp said. “But at halftime, I got into them big time and sorted a few of them out really because I was disappointed with that first half. I said, ‘I’ll find out an awful lot in the second half about a lot of you.”’ “I wouldn’t say it’s a mountain to climb,” Burnley manager Owen Coyle said. “It’s a wee bit more than that. It’s a long way back but we’ll go and try and be positive.” Tottenham’s hold on the trophy they have won four times looked shaky throughout the

first half as Burnley, who beat Arsenal, Chelsea and Fulham to reach this stage, looked more like a Premier League team than their opponents. Bentley played poorly out of position on the left wing, Aaron Lennon crossed erratically from the right, Gareth Bale was shaky in defence and the strikers struggled to force any openings. Burnley, meanwhile, threatened constantly, particularly down the right wing through former Manchester United trainee Chris Eagles. Redknapp said he understood why the Tottenham fans jeered their team off at halftime. “People will accept you making mistakes, they’ll accept you giving the ball away, they’ll accept you losing the ball if you try to beat somebody,” Redknapp said. “But they won’t accept you giving up when you

After setting up Dawson for his goal, O’Hara collected a headed flick by Luka Modric, who had been one of Spurs’ few good first-half performers, and scored with a low shot at the far post. “The first-half performance we were delighted with,” Coyle said. “We looked a very good side and scored a very good goal. I don’t think anyone would have foreseen what happened in the second half. There certainly wasn’t three goals between the teams tonight but that’s what happens when you play against big sides.”

they make it to the group stage, they’ll face strong opponents: title holders Kashima Antlers of Japan, China’s Shanghai Shenhua and South Korean champions Suwon Bluewings have all been drawn in Group G. However, Prapol believes the team’s main focus should be on the immediate job rather than what lies further ahead. “Our target is to win a place first, for sure. We’ll not think about the group stage until the qualification. Although we’ll face strong teams, it will be valuable experience for my team. We’ll try to recruit capable players in the meantime before the first play-off match,” said Prapol.

David Beckham lacked match fitness during the game.

Messi puts Barca on road Lionel Messi gave one of the best performances of his career in Madrid on Tuesday, scoring a handsome hattrick as Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid 3-1 in the King’s Cup. The Argentine 21-year-old confirmed his status as one of football’s brightest stars, at the same time that Barca confirmed their status as the top team in Spain. The game finished with the near-capacity crowd applauding Messi, while baying for the blood of coach Javier Aguirre.

hailand Premier League champions Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) face a couple of big obstacles in their quest to taste highlevel football at this year’s Asian Football Confederation’s Champions League. The Asian governing body has revamped the elite club competition in an attempt to foster professionalism on the continent. Thailand were placed among the countries whose domestic leagues failed to meet the organisation’s criteria of professionalism, meaning only one team will represent the Kingdom in the premier competition. To reach the tournament’s 32-team group stage, the PEA, who will make their first appearance in the event, need to make it through two play-off matches. The Thai side coached by Prapol Pongpanich will first entertain the Singapore Armed Forces FC at the Thammasat University’s Rangsit Stadium on February 18. The winners of the tie then host Indonesia’s PSMS Medan a week later, with a group-stage place at stake. avid Beckham failed to make much of an impact on his debut for AC Milan on Tuesday, exiting at half-time before the Italian powerhouses beat Hamburg 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. The former England captain, who is on a three-month loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, was greeted by a huge ovation from the crowd ahead of the friendly and displayed a few good touches with his famous right foot. Playing in a largely defensive role in midfield, Beckham provided a steady performance before being replaced by Mathieu Flamini after a scoreless first half. “It was a great atmosphere here today, felt just like when I was at [Manchester] United, they had families here sitting with the kids and it brings back memories,” Beckham said. “It was exciting for me. Penalties aren’t the best way to win a game, but I’m glad that we won. AC Milan works very hard and I love working hard.” Ronaldinho gave Milan the lead from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute, but Collin Benjamin poked in from close range to make it 1-1 five minutes later and neither team scored again in regulation.

The Royal Trophy tees off tomorrow – Asia wants captain dunked by Sunday Lerpong Amsa-ngiam DAILY XPRESS

aptain Joe Ozaki will get soaking wet if he successfully leads Asia to its first triumph over the two-time defending champions Europe in the Royal Trophy this weekend. Compatriot Toru Taniguchi, who underwent the painful experience of the crushing 3 ½ – 12 ½ loss two years ago, has said the winner of 35 titles will be thrown into the drink should his side break the losing streak that’s lasted for the past two editions. “We lost to European badly last time out,” said Taniguchi, former world No 27. “After 18 holes, we want to carry Ozaki shoulder-high, throw him in the air – or maybe into a pool.” Joe, or Naomichi – his first name in Japanese – didn’t seem to mind. He said he’d be happy to take a swim on Sunday as the price for settling scores after the devastating defeat in his 2007 debut as Asian skipper. “I was disappointed last time. This time I want to see my players show guts and fighting spirit. I want them to take revenge,” said Ozaki, adding that the only place he could be thrown was in a bunker as there is no water on the 18th hole. Ozaki has reasons to be confident about the tournament, starting at Amata Spring Country Club tomorrow. He has recruited the continent’s best: South Korean Charlie Wi, top 10

If I get the chance, I’ll help carry Ozaki to the nearest body of water.” Prayad, who finished 2008 at 52 in the world, is confident that team-mates like Hideko Tanihara of Japan and SK Ho of South Korea can upset their op-

posite numbers. “The European side is very tough but so is our team. Everyone of us has won a tournament before,” said the Thai ace. Despite being the underdogs, Asian players enjoy better combined world rankings – 711 to the 813 of the European team. But that factor doesn’t seem to bother European skipper Jose Maria Olazabal. “We are approaching this event to win , not thinking of the rankings. My players have played the Ryder Cup and have experience. We respect the Asian team but we are confident about our chances,” said the two-time Masters winner. The Spaniard, who succeeded Seve Ballesteros (still recovering from a tumor operation) as

captain is in charge of a team full of aces. Five of his players – Niclas Fasth of Sweden, Soren Hansen of Denmark, Paul Lawrie of Scotland, Paul McGinley of Ireland and Briton Oliver Wilson – have represented their continent in the Ryder Cup. The most dangerous among them is probably McGinley, who has never been on the losing side in team events. He was part Europe’s Ryder Cup-winning teams in 2002, 2004 and 2006 and also took part in the 2006 and 2007 editions of the Royal Trophy. But Olazabal is not complacent. “We have a strong team but we don’t want to underestimate Asia,” said the 42-year-old. “If we want to win, we have to play well.”

Boonsak, world number 13 and last year’s India Grand Prix Gold winner, went down 22-24 21-19 17-21 to world No 140 Liew in a gruelling, hardfought clash yesterday. Liew has so far toppled Thailand’s top two players. In the qualification round the previous day, he emerged a 1921 21-19 21-15 winner over Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, currently ranked No 51 in the world. It was another upset for Boonsak. Last year, he met a similar fate, crashing out in the second round. His younger sister Salakjit also had a tough task against Porntip Buranaprasertsuk in the all-Thais first-round encounter yesterday, but eventually found her form. She came from behind to beat her compatriot 13-21 21-9 21-10 in 42 minutes. She will take on top seed and world No 1 Zhou Mi of Hong Kong. PIETERSEN QUITS JOB Spat between England captain and coach leaves team in chaos AP, London

ngland cricket captain Kevin Pietersen and coach Peter Moores quit yesterday following a series of disagreements between them, throwing preparations for this year’s Ashes series into disarray. Moores’ departure had been expected after Pietersen publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the standard of his coaching and selection decisions. Sky TV said Pietersen, the South African-born batsman, stepped down after just five months in the role because the England and Wales Cricket Board did not act quickly enough. Sky and the Cricinfo Web site said that Moores quit following an emergency ECB board meeting late Tuesday.

England coach Peter Moores, facing camera left, and captain Kevin Pietersen, right, speak to players before yesterday’s bombshell. The ECB has declined to comment, although Cricinfo cited an unnamed ECB board member as saying the ruling body was unhappy at Pietersen trying to dictate policy. Director of cricket Hugh Morris and chief executive David Collier have been under pressure to find a solution to

the conflict before the team flies to the Caribbean for a test and one-day series against the West Indies starting January 21. The West Indies also visit England this year before the five-Test Ashes series against Australia – the biennial highlight of the cricket calendar for both sides. Australia won the

last series 5-0 at home, but this year’s series was expected to be a lot closer. Andrew Strauss, who has captained England previously, was immediately made a 1-3 favourite by British bookmaker William Hill to succeed Pietersen. All-rounder Andrew Flintoff was captain for the disastrous Ashes defence last time around. England had been rumoured to be looking to Kent’s former South Africa coach Graham Ford or Tom Moody, an Australia all-rounder who coached Sri Lanka, to succeed Moores. But that was when the idea was to find a coach to work alongside Pietersen.

Kiwis hammer Windies Skipper Daniel Vettori took four cheap scalps as New Zealand crushed the West Indies by seven wickets to level the one-day series 1-1 in Wellington. Vettori finished with 4-20 from 10 overs in the third of the five-match series.

Aussies win thriller Australia dismissed South Africa for 272 with only 10 balls remaining to win an entertaining third and final Test and avoid a series whitewash. Graeme Smith, returning to the crease with a broken finger, fell to Mitchell Johnson to hand the hosts victory. The tourists started the day needing 314 to pull off an unlikely result but lost Neil McKenzie, Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla in the opening session. Peter Siddle was man of the match with Smith named man of the series. Australia’s victory meant that they retained their position at the top of the International Cricket Council’s official Test rankings. The South Africans had already clinched the three-match series after winning the first two Tests in Perth and Melbourne and began the fifth day on 62. - A G E N C I E S ,

The Wimbledon, French Open and Olympic champion won 6-0, 6-1 against Fabrice Santoro in the first round of the Qatar Open, overwhelming the oldest man on the tour with his heavy hitting and relentless energy. It was not till the ninth game that the clever Frenchman won one, and all his slices, variations of pace and tactical subtleties created little distraction for the muscular Spaniard. Nadal won 51 of the 66 points. “It was really impressive being on the other side of the net against Nadal,” said Santoro

She later told journalists she could do nothing about the politics of the Middle East. “I have nothing to do with this,” she said. “I’m Shahar Peer. I came here to play tennis. I know I’m from Israel and I’m proud of my country and that playing tennis is what I’m going to do tomorrow.” Peer, 21, said she had tried to ignore the events in Gaza but her own brother, a military reservist, had been called up. “Two days ago, I was crying, so it was a hard time for me,” she said. “No one wants to be in a war.”
