Sukit asked for seven days for a probe into the issue. “I have already instructed relevant officials to find out what happened,” he said. He also criticised schools for failing to check the quality of milk before accepting the product. “If they find that the milk is not of good quality, they should immediately notify the FDA or the Farming Promotion Organis-ation of Thailand,” said Sukit. In response to a report that the scandal could cost him his job, Sukit shot back, “I have done nothing wrong. Why should I be removed from my post?”

briefly Students on the run Police are seeking arrest warrants for six more vocational students who assaulted a jeweller in front of Bangkok’s MBK Centre last week. Pathumwan police superintendent Colonel Paisal Leusomboon said yesterday that one of the four students originally wanted had turned himself in on Tuesday. The rest remain at large. The attack on jeweller Suthep Wiwatcharoenchai took place during a February 10 brawl between students of Pathumwan Institute of Technology and their rivals from Rajamangala University of Technology’s Uthen Thawai campus. Suthep was mistaken as a student. To prevent more brawls, police have been stationed at both institutes.

Incest clip a hoax? The police’s Children, Juveniles and Women Division (CWD) is investigating a pornographic video clip said to show a woman in her 40s having sex with her young sons for Bt5,000. California Attorney General Edmund Brown revealed the deaths after announcing the arrests of a nurse, a physician and a pharmacist from a nursing facility 225 kilometres north of Los Angeles. A DOCTOR IN YOUR POCKET Mobile phone producers now want to offer healthcare applications AFP, Barcelona, Spain

ot content with offering calls, texts and Internet access, the mobile phone industry is convinced it can help save lives and offer health services to millions worldwide. The idea of a phone serving as a “doctor in your pocket” has gained traction at the industry’s biggest trade show, the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona. Among a slew of possible applications in poor countries, insiders stressed the potential for the mobile phone to remind people to get vaccinations, take medicine or undergo HIV tests.

Doctors and nurses working at distance from hospitals or clinics can also use mobile connections to relay information on patients or report outbreaks. “When you consider that there are 2.2 billion mobile phones in the developing world, 305 million computers but only 11 million hospital beds you can instantly see how mobiles can create effective solutions to address healthcare challenges,” said Terry Kramer, strategy director at British operator Vodafone. “One of the main challenges is that people who are most in need of healthcare are usually more aged, so they don’t use the mobile or they’re not comfortable with it,” she says. In the developed world, researchers are also looking for ways to harness mobile technology. In several countries, diabetes sufferers can measure their blood sugar level with a device connected to a mobile phone, which sends the data to doctors to verify. Other applications are seen for monitoring people with heart problems or Alzheimer’s disease.

The longer children watch television the greater the risk they have of developing depression later in life, a US study shows. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh recorded the number of hours 4,140 participants in the study watched TV in 1995. The average age of the participants was then 14.8 years, and there was no indication any of them had depression. Seven years later, 7.8 per cent of the participants had been diagnosed with depression. – DPA

The Anantara hits Bangkok

You can get to Laos’ historical former capital fast enough, but that’s the last quick thing you’ll do By Majidah Hashim T H E S T A R , Luang Prabang

could spend two days on the slow boat from Huay Xai on the Thai border to Luang Prabang – or six hours on an eight-seat speedboat. I choose the latter, put on a life vest and deal with the din of the engine as we whiz past amazing rock formations. Soon after dusk I’m freshening up in a Luang Prabang backpacker guesthouse. The celebrated night market in the heart of town has stalls selling tropical fruit not much different from what I have in Malaysia, but it’s new to my Western travelling companions. Globalisation is a Malaysian introducing an American, an Irishman and an Israeli to rambutan and durian in Laos, appetisers for dinner at an Indian restaurant. Seen by bicycle the next day, Luang Prabang offers first Wat Xieng Thong, built in 1560 and adorned with beautiful carvings and murals. Next is the Royal Palace Museum, dating to 1904. The former royal residence is now filled with priceless antiques and religious sculptures, including the golden standing Buddha called the Pha Bang that gave the town its name.

The Anantara resort chain is set to open its first luxury serviced-apartment complex in Bangkok at the end of next month. The Anantara Baan Rajprasong on Rajdamri Road features 97 one- and twobedroom apartments just 100 metres from the Skytrain. The furnished apartments boast a kitchenette and the facilities include gardens, a fitness centre and swimming pool as well as high-speed Internet. Visit www.Anantara.com.

A food vendor promises us “all you can eat for just 5,000 kip”. That’s about Bt21, definitely a backpacker’s price, and sure enough the table quickly fills with travellers from all over. Out on the fringes of Luang Prabang are villages that specialise in rice cakes, paper lanterns and intricately woven scarves, and Pak Ou, a cave temple crammed with Buddhist statues. After lunch we trek through the forest in search of the Kuang Xi Waterfalls. The trick is to avoid being dissuaded by every beautiful pool of turquoise water you come across. They’re all strung together in a chain of gentle waterfalls and every one is stunning. We hike deeper into the forest and finally come to the picture-perfect falls of our quest, 30 metres in height.

He released a slew of sides with his own posse, also named Ropero, and then a series of solo remixes, scoring global hits with “All Over” and “Drive”. Then there were “Don’t Stop” and “Get Down”, massive tracks he cut with fellow DJs Maui and Terri Bjerre as Avant Garde. His best-known works have been remixes released by dance labels like Hed Kandi and Ministry of Sound. Prejudice in the temple The fuss about gay monks is based on ignorance – whatever your sexual orientation, it’s celibacy that counts By Pimann Laohapichitpong SPECIAL TO D A I LY X P R E S S

E

ffeminate monks” have become the talk of the town again. Although the issue has attracted public attention before, this time it’s taken centre stage through repeated news reports. The news media, of course, love a scandal, but their knee-jerk reporting has had the unfortunate effect of increasing homophobic attitudes and discrimination, because the emphasis is always on how “unBuddhist” these monks are. But if you pause to think things through, this is nonsense. The most important thing to remember is that sexual orientation is not an issue for the monkhood – heterosexual or homosexual, it doesn’t matter. The only distinction that counts is between “sexual” and “asexual”, because the line that separates the clergy from lay people is celibacy. Once ordained, you must sacrifice yourself, your identity and, of course, your sexuality to monastic rules, no matter whether you are gay or straight: no more homosexual, or heterosexual, lifestyle. I suppose that according to the human rights that govern

the wider world, gay men have just as much right to ordain as straights – unless they render themselves unqualified (through sex-reassignment surgery, for example). But the religious world has its own rules that cannot be arbitrarily violated. Frequently aired solutions to the “problem” of “effeminate monks” are careful screening of candidates, and stricter enforcement of monastic rules. But these are easier said than done. There’s a much simpler solution, of course: don’t ordain. If they ban you, why join them? It is neither necessary nor obligatory in Buddhism to join the monkhood. It’s possible to be a good Buddhist without ordination – and maybe even a better one than those with monastic experience. Furthermore, one can be a good person without adopting the label of any religion by following the Parliament of the World’s Religions’ four principles; 1) non-violence and respect of life; 2) solidarity and a just economic order; 3) tolerance and a life of truthfulness; 4) equal rights and partnership between men and women. When it comes to the news, however, “heretical effeminate-

homosexual monks” will likely get more attention than “heretical masculine-heterosexual monks” because Thailand – like the world – is ruled by heterosexual males who are easily alarmed by gender non-conformity, especially when it involves religion.

IT’S POSSIBLE TO BE A GOOD BUDDHIST WITHOUT ORDINATION – AND MAYBE EVEN A BETTER ONE THAN THOSE WITH MONASTIC EXPERIENCE.

lex Ferguson insists it is too soon to crown Manchester United as Premier League champions despite watching his side move five points clear of Liverpool with a 3-0 victory over Fulham. The league leaders, who can open up an eight-point lead with victory over Blackburn tomorrow prior to Liverpool’s Anfield clash with Manchester City on Sunday, cruised past Fulham thanks to goals from Paul Scholes, Dimitar Berbatov and fit-again Wayne Rooney on Wednesday. The win was United’s ninth on the bounce in the league and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar racked up his fourteenth consecutive Premier League clean sheet, taking his shut-out run to 1,302 minutes. But United boss Ferguson admitted that there are still possible pitfalls on the road to an eighteenth league title between now and May. He said: “You can never be dead sure, but it’s safe to say that Chelsea have an uphill fight now to overcome us. Things can happen, though. We were 12 points clear of Arsenal one season, 1997-98, and we lost the league.

“We had a lot of injuries that year, but hopefully, with the squad we have now, we can cope with injuries. That’s been the change around at the club, we have such a big squad that we can cope with injuries. “This was our game in hand, though, so it was important and I think the players applied themselves the right way. They worked hard because they had to work hard for the result and I’m pleased with them. “Paul Scholes was fantastic and some of his switches of play were absolutely devastating. He and Ryan Giggs are a great example to young players in the sense of the way that they live their lives, but they have kept their ambition which is important. We are so delighted and proud to have them here.” Rooney’s goal, three minutes after replacing Berbatov in the second half, was an added bonus for the England player, who had been sidelined since early January with a hamstring injury. And Ferguson admits that he will not take chances on the fitness of any of his players between now and the end of the season. He said: “Wayne scored with his first touch. It was a nice ball

Ajax-Feyenoord fans banned All football games between Ajax and Feyenoord will be played without supporters of the visiting club for the next five years. The Amsterdam and Rotterdam mayors, the management of both football clubs and the national football association KNVB made the decision on Wednesday night after a number of violent incidents had taken place last week. The KNVB said the ban will be evaluated after two years, and could theoretically be shortened then. Matches between Amsterdam-based Ajax and Rotterdam-based Feyenoord, traditionally known as the “classic duel”, are notorious for their many incidents involving violence and vandalism. To prevent excessive problems, supporters are transported to and from the stadiums in separate trains accompanied by police. Feyenoord fans are among many Dutch supporters known for chanting anti-Semitic slogans to the Ajax team and supporters. Repeated attempts by Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen to stop the anti-Semitic chants have so far failed. – D P A and he came in late, which he has done many times, but he is back now and I’m pleased. Hopefully he will stay fit now. “He is 100 per cent, there is no question about that. We are at the stage now where we won’t take risks with any players. If they have slight injuries, we won’t play them because if you do and they exacerbate the problem, they can be out for weeks and we don’t want that.”

‘Chelsea can’t win title’ Alex Ferguson believes Chelsea has thrown away any chance of winning the English Premier League title by firing Luiz Felipe Scolari, and singled out Liverpool as the main rival for his team’s third consecutive title. “I think they have played

into our hands and that the title race now is going to be between ourselves and Liverpool,” Ferguson said. “However, I shall be keeping a wary eye on Aston Villa, who seem to have picked up the baton from Arsenal. “I was shocked that Chelsea should part so soon with a manager of such great experience and proven success as ‘Phil’ Scolari,” Ferguson said. “Their haste is a reflection of the sad way the game is going, with everyone from owners, the board members, the supporters and the media demanding instant success and showing absolutely no patience in the pursuit of their ambition. “Winning prizes comes with stability and long-term planning,” Ferguson said.

ompetition-rusty champions Zenit St Petersburg braved temperatures of minus 10 degrees to beat VfB Stuttgart, St Etienne relived the glory days and AC Milan and Aston Villa drew as 2009 Uefa Cup action kicked off on Wednesday. Petersburg, fixtureless since December 10, showed no little match fitness in beating their German opponents 2-1 at home in this last 32 match. Szabolcs Huszti scored for St Petersburg after just two minutes and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, who moves to Bayern Munich next season, hit the winner at the end of the first half, sandwiching Mario Gomez’s 15th minute equaliser. Filippo Inzaghi’s record-equalling 66th goal in Europe, joining Real Madrid’s Raul, looked set to earn AC Milan victory at Werder Bremen, where they drew 0-0 in 1989 in the European Cup semi-final. But Diego’s powerful shot past Brazilian keeper Dida near the end meant it ended 11. Many of the 36,000-strong crowd had come to see AC Milan’s David Beckham, on loan from LA Galaxy, but the former England captain spent the majority of the game on the bench, coming on right at the end for Ronaldinho.

LANCE STEALS BACK Armstrong foils a bike thief during his 2nd comeback race AFP, Clovis, California

olice yesterday said they had recovered the one-of-akind bicycle swiped from Tour de France legend Lance Armstrong at a northern California racing venue. Someone brought the purloined Trek training bicycle to a police station in the city of Sacramento, where it was stolen last weekend. The person’s name was not released by police, who said the investigation of the theft is ongoing. Police said they returned the bicycle to Armstrong, who competed yesterday in the Tour of California. The seven-time Tour de France champion had used the bicycle on Saturday at a rainpelted, wind-pounded opening of the 1,000-kilometre race that continues through the week. Armstrong’s bicycle was one of several stolen from an Astana team truck parked behind a hotel in Sacramento. A lock on the truck was clipped to get inside, according to police. Armstrong on Sunday sent out a rallying cry to the more than 128,000 Twitter members signed up to receive brief text messages he routinely fires off on the popular micro-blogging service. A Facebook group called “1 Million Citizens Looking for Lance Armstrong’s Stolen Bike” had grown to 1,282 members by the time word of the Trek’s return hit the Internet on Wednesday. While there was no obvious link between the bicycle’s re-

It makes it hard to transport the thing; you can’t ride it or sell it...it is that hot of an item.” The man who delivered Armstrong’s bicycle is not considered a theft suspect and no arrests had been made as of late Wednesday, according to the sergeant. were still missing. “Score one for the good guys,” a Twitter user using the screen name ‘kraftmstr’ wrote as news of the Trek’s return ricocheted about the website. Attention on Twitter swiftly shifted back to Armstrong’s latest day in the saddle. “Watching Lance Armstrong gently shove an idiot into the snow on the roadside in the tour of California,” Twitter user Pete Watson said in a message about what he was doing at the moment. “Falling over laughing – excellent.” Cancer-survivor Armstrong, 37, retired in 2005 but has set out to make a comeback. The California race is his second on a comeback trail that started last month in Australia.

He owns a Ferrari but has not driven it for a year – just one price that Sachin Tendulkar pays for his iconic status in cricket-mad India. But his popularity does mean he is one of the few men in the world who can talk his way onto a plane without a passport. “I used to receive letters written in blood,” the 35year-old said. “It feels strange when a fan comes and touches your feet and says you are God. I don’t feel comfortable with it, but it is the way they feel about you.” Tendulkar regrets he cannot drive around Mumbai in the sports car with his son Arjun and daughter Sara as they would be mobbed by wild crowds as soon as the car got stuck in the city’s endless traffic jams. Tendulkar, however, admitted fame can have its advantages – as in Australia when he was once allowed to board a flight without a ticket or passport. “I was out with two other players and when we got back to the hotel, the rest of the team had already left for the airport,” he recalled. “We had no way of reaching them... We had no tickets, no passports. “I got to the counter at the airport and explained the situation. The guy at the counter recognised me and he gave us three boarding passes from Sydney to Melbourne... without passports, without tickets. “I felt that I was truly special.” – AFP

Derksen steals the show at Johnnie Walker Classic AFP, Perth, Australia

nheralded Dutch golfer Robert-Jan Derksen took the early lead yesterday at the Johnnie Walker Classic, firing a first-round 64 for a one-stroke advantage over the field. Singapore’s Mardan Mamat and Australia’s Tony Carolan were tied for second place at The Vines Resort at 65. while Britain’s Lee Westwood was the most impressive of the pretournament favourites, tied for fourth at six-under 66. Scotsman Colin Montgomerie was also in early contention at 67, while world No 11 Anthony Kim overcame the absence of his regular caddie – who was refused entry to Australia over a drugs conviction – to card a 68. The 35-year-old Westwood was grouped with Australian veteran Greg Norman – who struggled on the greens and finished with a disappointing 75 – and early favourite Camilo Villegas, who lacked consistency in carding a 72. The experienced Derksen, who finished second at the 2008 Asian Open, produced a stellar round with eight birdies that was just one off Padraig Harrington’s course record. “I think it suits my game,” Derksen said after the lowestscoring round of his career. “I’ve been struggling a bit with my drive, but it’s more just position play and I think that suits my game.”

Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands follows his shot on the 18th fairway during the first day’s round. Norman was the main draw, with a few thousand people watching his group with Villegas and Westwood, who was playing in his first tournament Down Under since the 2003 Classic. Westwood said he was thrilled to play alongside Norman, who was his hero as a youth, for the first time in five years. “Greg was really the person I looked up to and wanted to be like when I was growing up,” he said. “I wanted to play golf like he played golf, aggressive and with that kind of charisma. Every time I play with Greg, it is such a treat.”

Taiwanese World No 2 Tseng, 19, posted seven top-three finishes in 2008 to take the rookie of the year honours. South Koreans Ji-yai Shin and In-bee Park lifted the spirits of the whole country by dominating two of the four Majors last year. World No 5 Shin took the British Open and triumphed in the ADT Championship. Park, 19, stayed under the radar until the US Open, where she scored her maiden victory on the tour.

Lee shot a 2-under 70 for a two-round total of 138 to lead by one stroke over China’s Wang

Chun, Thai-American Stacy Prammanasudh and day one leader Hyeon-kyeong who are tied second. Thailand’s Titiya Plucksat-taporn is two off the pace after playing an even par round. She’s in joint fifth place with Korean Lee Na-ri. Diagnosed with cancer of the ovary, Lee had surgery early last year to remove a large growth. The doctors also discovered that the cancer had spread to

both her breasts, but caught it early. “Now I feel okay. I don’t want to think about it. I firmly believe that I am cured and I want to channel my efforts into playing the game seriously,” she said. Lee, 21, posted birdies on holes 3, 5, 7 and 14 but dropped a stroke each on 8 and 17 after over-shooting the greens. “The winds were pretty strong,” she explained.

THESPORT Top seed Serena Williams overcame Chinese opposition to reach the quarter-finals of the Barclays Championships while Serb Jelena Jankovic sank into a funk over “one of the worst losses of my career” on Wednesday. Serena struggled with Jie Zheng before a late break in the first set opened the floodgates to a 6-4 6-2 victory by the world No 1. Serena is now a potential win away from a semi-final showdown with her sister Venus at the Aviation club. The elder Williams defeated Alize Cornet of France 6-3 6-2 to reach the last eight. A disappointed Jankovic called her 6-2 75 defeat to Estonian 16th seed Kaia Kanepi in just under 90 minutes “one of the worst of my career.” “Today was just horrible. I couldn’t put two ball in the court. It was like another player out there – it was not me. “I didn’t feel my shots at all. I couldn’t do anything. It was a bad day of tennis, I really beat myself tonight.” – D P A

Wade slam-dunks VD claim

Dwyane Wade sued his estranged wife and two of her lawyers over accusations the NBA star contracted a sexually transmitted disease through an extramarital affair. In the lawsuit, Wade was seeking at least $50,000 in damages from each defendant. Siohvaughn Wade said last month the player infected her with an unspecified disease in 2007. Weeks later, she withdrew the claim from the court hearing the divorce case for unspecified reasons. That wasn’t enough to satisfy the 2006 NBA finals MVP, who said her allegations not only defamed him, but caused “embarrassment” and “humiliation” along with damaging future earning potential. “It has been difficult to see false allegations, rumours and gossip repeatedly discussed in public about my personal life,” Dwyane Wade said. “I had no other choice but to file this action in order to clear my name.” In the allegations filed in January, along with the claims of affairs and being infected with an STD, Siohvaughn Wade said her husband abandoned their children and went weeks at a time without speaking to them. She added that the paternal relationship was so severed that her younger son cried uncontrollably when he’s around and he does not recognise Dwyane Wade as his father. The couple married in 2002 and have two children, the older of whom was born three months before the wedding. – A P
