he marketing men have another springboard to sell their “lifestyle” products now that “Slumdog Millionaire” is an Oscarwinner. Many have tried using the exotic allure of India to sell clothes, food and movies in the past but have realised that it’s not an easy job. What’s certain now is that we are about to be swamped by a new wave of India-influenced advertising campaigns. But is Indian culture here to stay, or will it just be another short-lived gimmick?

Body of foreigner’s head found hanging from Rama IX Bridge discovered in river; probe into mafia-like gangs ordered D A I LY X P R E S S

A

fter discovering a head at the end of a rope hanging from the Rama IX Bridge on Sunday, police at 2pm yesterday found the body floating in the Chao Phya river nearby. It was clothed in a long-sleeve white shirt, black and white pants and white canvas sneakers.

Caucasian in his 50s Forensic examiners said that the man, a foreigner, had probably committed suicide. It is

not uncommon for the fall to tear the head from the body in such cases. Metropolitan Police Area 7 deputy chief Colonel Chavalit Prasobsilp said that initial forensic tests had identified the dead man as a Caucasian in his 50s. Based on bruising at the point where the head was severed, the forensic team gave an 85 per cent probability that a sharp object had not been involved, he added. Chavalit said that police ini-

tially gave more weight to murder as the cause of death, but were waiting for the autopsy results before declaring a criminal case.

Identity hunt “In an effort to discover the dead man’s identity we have contacted the Immigration Bureau and dispatched police officers to residential areas housing foreigners. “We have also sent the dead man’s details to a number of foreign missions including the US and Italian embassies.” Police are checking footage from security cameras near the bridge, as the cameras on the bridge were not working. Pictures of the dead man have

also been posted at guesthouses in the Khao San Road and Nana areas.

Russian connection? An official at the Russian Embassy in Bangkok yesterday contacted Bovornmongkol Police Station suggesting that the dead man might be Russian, based on his distinctive facial features. In related news, Deputy PM Suthep Thaugsuban said he had received the report on the case and instructed police to hunt down the culprits if they suspected murder. He said the investigation would cover mafia-like gangs within and beyond Thailand’s borders.

DRUGGED FOR SPARE CHANGE Fears grow that the children in beggars’ arms are often drugged unconscious in Chiang Mai. AGENCIES CALL FOR ACTION By Ekkapong Praditpong D A I LY X P R E S S Chiang Mai

eggars with sleeping children in their arms are a familiar sight on the streets of Thailand’s Northern capital. But in a sinister new turn, suspicions are growing that the children are often drugged into unconsciousness.

Child trafficking suspected “We have received reports that one of the girls in a male beggar’s arms is asleep all the time,” says Duan Wongsa, co-

ordinator for the AntiTrafficking Coordination Unit Northern Thailand. “This case may be linked to human trafficking, violations of children’s rights, and social problems.” She is calling on relevant government agencies to urgently tackle these problems. Her agency’s investigations have found that the beggars with sleeping children often target tourist spots like the Night Bazaar and walking street. “It seems they operate as a network, because they always

manage to evade arrest,” Duan says.

Tourist-season patrols Mongkol Danwilaipitikul, who heads Chiang Mai socialdevelopment and human-security office, admits that there are reports that children might be drugged during their begging rounds.

“We are now trying to gather more information,” he says. He says the number of beggars usually rises during the tourist high season. “We plan to patrol the hotspots four or more times each month,” Mongkol says. “We want to put an end to street begging. At the very least, we should be able to re-

duce the number of beggars in Chiang Mai during the Songkran Festival.” He urges members of the public to call his office with any relevant information. “Please tell us about the physical appearance of the beggars, their regular spots and the time they usually show up.”

Have back pain or migraine? Try acupuncture Acupuncture is more effective than painkillers for chronic back pain and migraines, according to a new study by German researchers who admit that no one knows how or why the needles work. The study also showed that needles, which were deliberately inserted at the wrong acupuncture points, were just as effective as needles inserted at the points specified by traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medical texts claim that acupuncture taps into “meridians” or channels which are pathways through which Qi (the vital energy) and blood flow to all parts of the body. German scientists conducted 33 separate trials involving more than 6,700 people. Researchers found that, over the course of two months, people treated with acupuncture suffered from lesser headaches as compared to those who used only painkillers. D PA

34,000 apply for ‘world’s best job’ Actor Dean Martin’s son, Barack Obama impersonator among latest applicants A F P , Sydney

T

ens of thousands of people from more than 200 countries have applied for “the best job in the world” – being paid to loll about on an Australian island – officials said yesterday. The deadline for applications was midnight GMT on Sunday. A late rush of more than 7,500 applications over the weekend brought the number of people hoping to become “caretaker” of tropical Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef to 34,684.

The most interest came from the US with 11,565 applicants, followed by Canada with 2,791, Britain with 2,262 and Australia with 2,064. Among the latest applicants were famed US crooner and movie star Dean Martin’s son Ricci and a Barack Obama impersonator looking for a change of job.

A$150,000 for six months Candidates had to submit a video application in English of up to one minute explaining why they were uniquely qualified for the post.

The job pays A$150,000 (Bt3.56 million) for six months and includes free airfares from the successful candidate’s home country to the island of white sands and clear waters. In return, the winner will be expected to have as much fun as he or she can enjoy – soaking up the sun, swimming, snorkelling, sailing – and to report to a global audience via weekly blogs, photo diaries and video updates. The successful candidate – who will stay in a multimillion-dollar three-bedroom beach home – must be over 18, a “fantastic and charismatic” communicator, and be able to speak and write English.

Bald from chemotherapy and so weak she had trouble standing, British reality TV star Jade Goody married her 21-year-old sweetheart on Sunday. The wedding extravaganza for the brash 27-year-old, now dying from cervical cancer, has captivated Britain and helped turn the loud-mouthed Goody from the star everyone loved to hate to the one they can’t praise enough. Goody and Jack Tweed received a standing ovation from 200 guests once they were married at the Down Hall Country House Hotel in eastern England. The bride had painkillers stashed inside her designer dress. When she felt unable to stand about half an hour into the 45-minute service, she sat down, her husband-to-be knelt beside her, and her two young sons scrambled onto her lap, her spokesman said.

Watch that mouth The king and queen of Spain got a dash of profanity from celebrity chef Mario Batali at a US$1,000 (Bt35,580)-a-plate dinner during the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. Batali dropped some royally naughty words as he hosted the event in the presence of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. Growing impatient when the crowd did not quiet down, he used the F-word, and asked the audience if he could have “10 seconds of your time”. Batali dropped the F-word again while introducing chef Jose Andres, and he finished by grabbing Andres’ bottom. The queen blanched. Gloria Estefan chortled. And Andres kept his cool. “This is what food and wine from Spain will do to you,” he explained. – AP

A Singapore court sentenced a former primary school teacher and married woman to 10 months in jail yesterday for having sex with a 15-year-old student. The 32-year-old woman, a mother of two, had developed an intimate relationship with her young charge when he was 14 years old and after they had gone on an overseas school trip. After the trip they stayed in touch through frequent telephone calls and SMS messages. The woman declared the boy her godson and began showering him with care and attention. The relationship continued even after he went to secondary school. The ex-teacher admitted to having sex with the boy in a rented room in March last year when he was still under 16. The former teacher reported to the police in May after the boy threatened to kill her and her family when she decided to break off the relationship. D PA

Naruhito, who turned 49 yesterday, was circumspect on other palace affairs and refused to comment on the debate over his successor – between those who want to change the law to allow his daughter to succeed him and those who prefer his brother’s son. Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito looks at a globe with his wife Princess Masako and their daughter Princess Aiko at the Togu Palace in Tokyo last week. but many still feel a post-World War II law restricting the throne to males should be changed to let Princess Aiko, Naruhito’s daughter, follow in her father’s footsteps.

When asked how he could help ease his father’s burden, Naruhito expressed concern but offered no specifics. “I will do whatever it takes to help improve the situation,”

The role of the imperial family has come under scrutiny lately because some feel it is too restrictive and demanding, and some have linked that to the health problems suffered by Akihito and others. Japan’s royal family has been hit by illness, with both Naruhito’s mother and father cutting back their official appearances because of stress-related illnesses. Naruhito’s wife, Princess Masako, has also been kept largely out of the public eye because of a form of depression.

ith a ghetto-to-glory story that paralleled its unlikely rise to Hollywood’s summit, “Slumdog Millionaire” took the best-picture Academy Award and seven other Oscars, including director for Danny Boyle. The other top winners: Kate Winslet, best actress for the Holocaust-themed drama “The Reader”; Sean Penn, best actor for the title role of “Milk”; Heath Ledger, supporting actor for “The Dark Knight”; and Penelope Cruz, supporting actress for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”. A story of hope amid squalor in Mumbai, “Slumdog Millionaire” came in with 10 nominations, its eight wins including adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing and both music Oscars (score and song). “Just to say to Mumbai, all of you who helped us make the film and all of those of you who didn’t, thank you very much. You dwarf even this guy,” Boyle said, holding up his directing Oscar. The filmmakers accepted the best-picture trophy surrounded by both the adult professional actors who appeared among the cast of relative unknowns and some of the children the British director cast from the slums of Mumbai.

The film follows the travails and triumphs of Jamal, an orphan who artfully dodges a criminal gang that mutilates children to make them more pitiable beggars. Jamal witnesses his mother’s violent death, endures police torture and struggles with betrayal by his brother, while single-mindedly hoping to reunite with the lost love of his childhood. Fate rewards Jamal, whose story unfolds through flashbacks as he recalls how he came to know the answers that made him a champion on India’s version of the TV game show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”

Mighty Penn As he took the stage to accept his prize for playing slain gay-rights pioneer Harvey Milk, Penn gleefully told the crowd: “You commie, homoloving sons of guns.” He followed with condemnation of anti-gay protesters who demonstrated near the Oscar site and comments about California’s recent vote to ban gay marriage. “For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think it’s a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect on their great shame and their shame in their grandchildren’s eyes if they continue

that support,” Penn said. “We’ve got to have equal rights for everyone.”

From beyond For his demented reinvention of Batman villain the Joker, Ledger became only the second actor ever to win posthumously, his triumph coming exactly 13 months after the Australian actor’s death from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. Because I might be the first one,” the Spanish actress said, who went on with warm thanks to Allen. “Thank you, Woody, for trusting me with this beautiful character. Thank you for having written all these years some of the greatest char-

I think I was probably eight years old and staring into the bathroom mirror, and this would be a shampoo bottle. But it’s not a shampoo bottle now.” It was Winslet’s first win after five previous losses.

There’s something at the Oscars that Thais can be proud of: Lupt Utama, a 32-year-old native of Chiang Mai, was part of the team that won best costume for “The Duchess”. Lupt, who is living and working in London, was responsible for the men’s costumes for the period drama. The costume department was headed by Michael O’Connor. Lupt has been in showbiz for almost a decade. His credits include “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” (which was filmed in Thailand). Filling in for youth

I’ve just noticed that my face looks really old and thin. What do I need to help me look younger and more attractive? A lack of fat in the cheeks definitely makes both men and women appear older than they actually are. The best remedy is filler injection in some areas of the face. Fillers are synthetic substitutes of collagen, the soft-tissue “glue” that exists naturally in our bodies. They occupy space and their purpose is to fill. They can be made of bovine (cow) collagen or hyaluronic acid. For the deep grooves that stretch down from the nose to the corner of the mouth, or from the corner of the mouth to the jowls, dermatologists prefer to use a filler material. These lines form as a result of gravity and loss of volume from the midface rather than from muscle movements, so the logical solution is to non–surgically restore the volume with fillers. Sunken cheeks and facial hollows are restored to give a three–dimensional and vibrant appearance. Cheeks are vital to what we consider the key to facial rejuvenation. Filling volume loss on the cheeks and under the eyes restores youth to the face.

ollywood is the stuff of fairytales, and at the Academy Awards, celebrities dressed the part. Recession may be reality, but the gowns and jewels were pure escapist fantasy. The best was Sarah Jessica Parker’s silver-embroidered seafoam silk tulle Dior Haute Couture bustier gown, cinched at the waist

Marisa Tomei

with an enormous ballerina skirt, followed by Penelope Cruz’s 1950svintage Pierre Balmain strapless ivory lace gown, hand-embroidered with gold bouillon threads. Miley Cyrus’ ivory silk chiffon Zuhair Murad confection, with scalloped tiers and foil-like embroidery, was too much dress for a 16-yearold. Likewise, Marisa Tomei’s dovegrey one-shoulder Versace gown with spiralling origami pleats was so ornate you barely noticed her. Taraji Henson, in a rippling cream chiffon Roberto Cavalli column, offset by a red Mary Norton clutch, was the evening’s best dressed. I loved it when she lifted her skirt to show her shoes and you could see her Spanx lingerie. That’s reality. Henson’s 19th-century, diamond-flower Fred Leighton necklace exemplified the jewellery trend. Amy Adams also wore an impressive Leighton piece, a 1950s coloured gem-and-diamond collar. Red dresses, the surest way to va-vavoom glamour, were also popular – Adams in red Carolina Herrera with a sculptural pleated bodice, and Heidi Klum in a slit-high red-silk taffeta RL by Roland Mouret gown.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Kate Winslet wore a one-shouldered, blue-grey Yves Saint-Laurent gown, but what I really loved was her hair – a sculptural flip styled by Renato Campora. Hairstyles looked more modern than ever, particularly Henson’s sleek bob and Jessica Beal’s easy do, the front pulled back and the rest tumbling around her shoulders. Brooks Brothers dressed the evening’s “biggest littlest” stars, the children from “Slumdog Millionaire”, in tiny tuxedos. Brad Pitt was in head-to-toe Tom Ford and, as usual, Giorgio Armani had quite a pack of fellas, including Sean Penn and Anil Kapoor. I’m all for self-expression, but Philip Seymour Hoffman’s black knit cap made him look as if he were en route to a jewel heist. Lord knows, he was in the right place.

The perfect link

This video hard-disk recorder from China is ideal for connecting all your multimedia files By Smiley Byte D A I LY X P R E S S

I

f you’ve been looking for a video hard-disk recorder that you can use to link multimedia files on your computer to your home theatre or stereo system but won’t cost you a small fortune, then the NetBoz HDD-11S from China is for you. The HDD-11S, which is a hard-disk enclosure, has a built-in network port that connects with an LAN cable to

your computer, allowing you to play back several types of multimedia files, such as digital photos, audios and videos, on your TV and sound system. It has audio/video input for receiving analogue audio and video signals and converting them into MPEG2 video format with the same resolution as DVD movies. The quality of the recorded movies depends on the reception quality of your TV or satellite receiver. I tried recording movies from a TrueVisions satellite receiver and found the quality acceptable. Apart from recording movies, the HDD-11S also plays back movie files to your TV and streams the movie signals to your high-definition LCD TV using either Component Video cables or HDMI cable. The HDD-11S displays the movies at 1080i resolution, one notch below the full 1080p resolution. (The “i” stands for in-

terlace while “p” is for progressive scans; the 1080 is the number of horizontal lines.) I tried playing DVD movies and found they displayed beautifully on a Sony 32-inch LCD TV and LG 42-inch full1080p LCD TV. The HDD-11S is linked to your computer through the provided LAN port. I connected it to my ADSL router and keyed in my IP address and was able to easily access fold-

ers containing photos, music files and video files. You can use the on-screen menu to browse folders then display the photos on your TV with background music or play MP3 files on your stereo system. And the price is reasonable! Goodluck World Business imports and distributes the HDD -11S for Bt7,900 without a hard disk. That you must buy separately.

Everton’s hopes of winning some silverware this season suffered a severe blow yesterday when their Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta was ruled out for the rest of the campaign. Arteta, the creative heartbeat of David Moyes’s side, suffered the injury at Newcastle. The club said their worst fears had been confirmed by a scan which showed that the 26-year-old had ruptured a cruciate ligament in his right knee. – AFP

US hopefuls to unveil F1 plans A prospective American-based Formula One team will unveil its plans today to use US technology and drivers to compete in the global racing series, according to the group’s website. USF1, expected to be based here in the heartland of America’s stock car series Nascar, will announce plans on Speed TV, where former Williams and Ferrari team manager Peter Windsor serves as a reporter for F1 coverage. Also in the group is Ken Anderson, who worked for two F1 teams in the 1980s, and has been a US motorsport designer and engineer. – AFP

Celtics minus Garnett spank Suns Although Kevin Garnett was missing from the line-up, the Boston Celtics didn’t miss a beat without their injured All-Star forward. Rajon Rondo had a career-high 32 points with 10 assists, Ray Allen scored 31 and the shorthanded Celtics spanked the Phoenix Suns 128-108 yesterday. “Guys step up and play their roles even better when Kevin is out,” Rondo said. “It was a team effort.” The Celtics played their first game since learning Garnett will be sidelined for the next 2-3 weeks with a right knee sprain suffered Thursday night against Utah. Benitez admits the Reds’ title hopes are fading after Manchester City draw AFP, Liverpool, England

R

afa Benitez admits that Liverpool’s flickering title hopes now rest on the outcome of their next two Premier League games after Dirk Kuyt’s equaliser salvaged a 1-1 draw against Manchester City. Failure to claim all three points against Mark Hughes’ team on Sunday has left Liverpool seven points adrift of reigning champions Manchester United, who host Benitez’s team at Old Trafford on March 14. But despite this latest setback in Liverpool’s bid to end their nineteen-year title drought, manager Benitez insisted they still live in hope of overhauling Sir Alex Ferguson’s European champions.

“It is clearly more difficult for us now. We have to win against Middlesbrough and Sunderland if we are to win the trophy,” Benitez said. “This is a bad result because we could have done better with our first-half chances. I have confidence that we can still do it, though. We just need to win against Middlesbrough and Sunderland. “It is not easy to say that United will slip up, but there are still 12 games left to play, so it is not finished yet. It is clear that we will have to go to Old Trafford and beat them, though. “United can clearly win games with their quality, but if they lose, we have to win and be there to take advantage.”

Liverpool must now put domestic issues to one side as they prepare for Wednesday’s Champions League last 16 firstleg clash against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu. And Benitez admitted that there is still doubt as to whether captain Steven Gerrard will recover from a three-week hamstring lay-off in time to face the nine-time European champions. “We will see about Gerrard on Monday. He has to train and we will then chat with him and the doctor,” Benitez said. “He is improving, but it is not easy to say.” City were unfortunate not to end their six-month wait for an away league victory. Alvaro Arbeloa’s own goal on 51 minutes was the least they deserved and the visitors could have scored more. Craig Bellamy’s performance against his former club was key

to their impressive efforts and boss Hughes admitted that the Wales international had a point to prove to Liverpool. “You always get players wanting to do well against their former clubs and Craig is no exception in that sense,” Hughes said. “He is a proud man and he probably feels that he didn’t get a fair crack of the whip when he was here at Liverpool. “But he is a quality player and he has done extremely well for me in the short time that he has been at the club.” Hughes, a two-time title winner during his playing days at Manchester United, admitted that his former club are now in pole position to win the league after this result. “There are still games to go, so Liverpool can come back, but they will be looking at United to slip up for that to happen,” he

said. “United don’t look like slipping up very often, though, so it is going to be difficult for Liverpool now.”

Real confidence sky high Real Madrid are in confident mood ahead of their Champions League showdown with Liverpool at the Santiago Bernabeu. Midfielder Rafael van der Vaart said the five-time European champions would be intimidated. “We’re Real Madrid, which is why I think Liverpool are frightened of us,” said van der Vaart. “The team is working hard to be in perfect shape. We’re anxious to do well in Europe, and I will do anything to win the Champions League.” Centre-half Pepe explained: “Liverpool shouldn’t fear us. They should respect us, just like we do them.”

anchester United face a defensive injury crisis ahead of tonight’s crucial Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash away to Inter Milan. Alex Ferguson is already deprived of Serbia centreback Nemanja Vidic through suspension while veteran Gary Neville and Wes Brown are both definitely out. Northern Ireland centreback Jonny Evans also picked up an ankle injury during Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Blackburn, while fellow defender John O’Shea missed that game with a heel problem sustained in the 3-0 win over Fulham last Wednesday. It means that Ferguson could be left with only one recognised senior centre-half in Rio Ferdinand, while the only other defender at his disposal to have played firstteam football before this season is France’s Patrice Evra. It has all left Ferguson a bit worried ahead of the most eagerly anticipated tie of the round. “We’ve got some injury issues of course and I just hope we can get two centre-backs out there on Tuesday,” he said. “At this moment in time, it’s very doubtful. Jonny Evans is unlikely to be playing, he’s looking very doubtful and I’m just hoping to

have John O’Shea available because we don’t have Gary Neville and we don’t have Wes Brown. “We’re having a nightmare with defenders this season. Hopefully we can patch it up for Tuesday because this does leave us very, very short.” It means at least one of twin teenage full-backs Rafael and Fabio Da Silva is sure to play and maybe even both. Otherwise Ferguson will have to look at the possibility of throwing a midfielder into his backline although there are few feasible options. Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes have always been attacking players while Darren Fletcher has had the odd runout at right-back but never in the heart of the defence. United may well have to resort to a dogged defensive display, aiming to hit their hosts on the break. That is something that Inter coach Jose Mourinho is most concerned about. “I don’t want my players to feel under pressure, I want them to enjoy themselves and the first thing I will tell them is that I have great belief in their ability to win it,” said the Portuguese boss. The Portuguese coach, however, is also relying on the loud support from their “12th man” – the crowd that will pack the stadium.

ionel Messi and Karim Benzema, top scorers in this season’s Champions League, hold the key to tonight’s second-round, firstleg clash between Lyon and Barcelona which should be an attacking feast. Both men have five goals in this year’s competition to share top spot in the goal charts with Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard and Miroslav Klose of Bayern Munich. Argentine ace Messi likes coming up against the seventime French champions. Last season, he scored in both group games which finished 2-2 in France and a comfortable 3-0 win in Barcelona as the Spanish giants, twice European champions, made it as far as the semi-finals. However, Barcelona did not have the best preparation for Tuesday’s clash, losing 2-1 to city rivals Espanyol. “Nobody said this was going to be easy,” said Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola. “It was a demanding match and we need our players to recover from it.” Lyon are on top of their domestic league, but coach Claude Puel believes his side have the toughest assignment of the entire Champions Legaue second round draw.

Mickelson avoids a meltdown to win Northern Trust Open AP, Los Angeles

n the verge of blowing the biggest lead of his career, Phil Mickelson turned his fortunes around in the final hour at Riviera with back-to-back birdies that carried him to a one-shot victory yesterday in the Northern Trust Open. Mickelson went from a fourshot lead at the start of the final round to a two-shot deficit with three holes to play. But he hit 9iron to 5 feet for birdie on the 16th, holed a 6-foot birdie on the 17th and saved par with a 6-foot putt on the final hole. He closed with a 1-over 72 to become only the fourth player to win back-to-back years at Riviera. “I’m pleased to be sitting here as the champion,” Mickelson said. “And it was not easy. I had a five-shot lead and I let it slide. The good thing was that I was

Even though I didn’t have my best stuff, I was able to fight through it.” Steve Stricker closed with a 67 and was on his way to the range to get ready for a play-off when he saw Mickelson leave himself a tough par putt on the final hole, and stopped when he heard the cheer.

“It’s just a little disappointing when you don’t finish it off, or have the opportunity to finish it off,” he said. “And I didn’t.” Stricker missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-5 17th that would have given him a threeshot lead at the time, then missed a 12-footer for par on the 18th.

But the real heartache belonged to Fred Couples. A two-time winner at Riviera, his favourite golf course west of Augusta National, the 49-yearold had a chance for one last victory in his final full season on the PGA Tour. Couples was one shot behind when he fanned his approach to the 18th green and watched in disgust as it struck a eucalyptus tree. He finished with a bogey for a 69 to tie for third with South Korea’s KJ Choi (69) and Argentina’s Andres Romero (70). Couples learned earlier in the week that his former wife, Thais Baker, died of breast cancer. “She was a nice person,” he said. “She did everything she could to make it another month.” Mickelson finished at 15-under 269 and won for the 35th time in his career. It was the first time since the 2005 PGA Championship that he won a tournament without breaking par in the final round.

A

ndy Roddick won his first title of 2009 and the 27th of his career on Sunday, beating Czech Radek Stepanek 7-5 7-5 in the finals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. Only Roger Federer (57) and Rafael Nadal (32) have won more titles among active players. In Marseille, France, JoWilfried Tsonga, the French fourth seed, won the ATP tournament on Sunday, defeating compatriot Michael Llodra 7-5, 7-6 (7/3) for his fourth career title which he dedicated to his sick father. He finished Llodra off with his 11th ace before explaining his thoughts were with his father, former handballer Didier, who had surgery during the week. “I almost didn’t come here. I couldn’t tell you that my father was operated on this week. Today, I dedicate this win to him,” said Tsonga.

DANNY RISING Danny Lee, who has set his sights on becoming the “next Tiger Woods,” has rocketed more than 400 places in world golf rankings. He now sits at 158.

“Pink Panther” Paula Creamer is back in town to cause “pink fever”. The world No 3 returns to the Siam Country Club Pattaya Plantation where she came third in the Honda LPGA Thailand in 2007. She was, arguably, the most popular player with more than 1,000 fans, most identified themselves with the American by dressing in pink, following her everywhere. Creamer is one of the strong contenders in the star studded US$1.45 million event which starts on Thursday. World No 1 Lorena Ochoa, defending champion Suzann Pettersen and Japanese Ai Miyazato have already started practice at the venue. Other big names taking part in the event are US Open champion Park In-bee, LPGA Championship winner Tseng Yani and British Open victor Shin Jiyai. Two local youngsters Moriya Jutanugarn and Thidapa Suwannapura will carry Thai hopes into the competition. Fourteen-year-old Moriya, sister of Ariya, the youngest to compete in an LPGA event, has been invited to take part after winning the Junior British Open last year while Thidapa earned her slot after winning the Honda Challenge event.

Defiant Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez insisted his side could still win the English Premiership title despite their 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Sunday, a result that left them seven points behind leaders Manchester United. “Clearly it’s more difficult now,” Benitez said of the title race. “We have to win against Middlesbrough and Sunderland and then we have to start thinking about winning at Old >PAGE 25 Trafford.”

Phil Mickelson rallied on the final two holes, holding off a late charge from Steve Stricker, to capture his second consecutive Northern Trust Open title. “I was fortunate to sneak through with the win,” Mickelson said. “The last four holes I just looked at the target and swung.
