ince yesterday, seniors have been happily registering for the government’s new living allowance of Bt500 for six consecutive months. “We were thrilled when we heard about the helping hand,” said Sawat Thanananthapong, with his wife by his side. The couple, both aged 69, registered at the Chatuchak District Office in Bangkok.

Easing the family burden Sawat said he and his wife had long relied on their children for food and basic necessities. “That’s quite a burden on them because they don’t have steady jobs,” the father said. DAILY

Piranat Warattapop accompanied his 72-year-old mother to the registration. “This may not sound like a lot of money but at least it gives the elderly some income,” he said, adding that he hopes the government will consider extending the scheme.

Register by March 15 The government plans to hand out Bt500 per month between April and September to every senior who registers at their local administrative or district office by March 15. Piengjai Wisarutrat, who heads the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Social Development Department, said

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I’VE HAD FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM THE STATE.I’M SO RELIEVED. Serm Tinakhad, 80 large numbers showed up at every district office in the capital yesterday. “A queue formed at the Phra Khanong District Office before it had even opened,” Piengjai said. “The information in your household registration deter-

mines which office you must contact.” Serm Tinakhad, 80, registered in his home province of Phichit, and said he would spend the money on food. “Then, I won’t have to be a burden on my children and grandchildren.” Phichit’s Deputy Governor Yuthana Wiriyakitti has instructed every local administrative organisation to inform locals of the living allowance. Down South, some 460 seniors turned up at the Mueang District Office of Narathiwat to register. While the living-allowance scheme will cover most Thai seniors, some may not qualify. Elderly people who already receive income/welfare from the government or local administrative organisations are not eligible for the scheme, says the government.

The Culture Ministry will ask all bookstores to keep some books out of children’s sight. “Books featuring pictures not suitable for children should be kept in a separate zone beyond their reach,” Culture Minister Teera Slukpetch said yesterday. He was speaking after meeting with relevant authorities to discuss how best to prevent the distribution of inappropriate print materials. Teera said that a books-andmagazines rating system had also been agreed at the meeting and should be launched as soon as possible.

New ideas needed Workers yesterday called for Bt5 billion to tackle unemployment, while employers urged the government to provide individuals with vocational training and a Bt5,000 allowance for four months. Employees’ Labour Development Council of Thailand chief Manas Kosol told a seminar that seven employee organisations would not call for a minimum wage hike this Labour Day, but that Bt5 billion should be used to help employees and businesses in four cases. They were, businesses whose employees had to suspend their work in exchange for a 25 per cent salary cut; laid-off workers whose employers had fled; allowances for workers undergoing vocational training; and the launch of a database for the unemployed. T

he six children who acted in the Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” returned from Hollywood to Mumbai yesterday to cheers from fans lined up at the city’s airport. Hundreds of family members, friends and fans thronged the airport to greet the children, shouting “Jai Ho”, the film’s theme song. The movie won eight awards, including best picture. The children, three of whom are slum-dwellers, were welcomed with garlands amid

tight police security, and then driven home in style in six Mercedes. The children were due later to attend a party, Indian media reported.

Young and famous “This is the proudest moment of our lives. I cannot believe my daughter has become world famous,” said Rafiq

Asghar Ali Quereshi, father of nine-year-old Rubina Ali. Rubina played the younger version of the love interest of Jamal, the hero of the feel-good film about a boy who rises from poverty and enters a TV quiz show to win millions and be united with the girl he adores. “The entire family is here,” said Querishi, who lives in a Mumbai slum. “I’ve never seen such enthusiasm – even when Bollywood stars arrive, the crowds are calmer,” Suresh Bhaghat, a cleaner said. The rags-to-riches drama, directed by Danny Boyle, was based on the book “Q and A” by Indian author Vikas Swarup.

n what has been described as “the most unusual divorce on record”, the Jerusalem Rabbinic Court has expedited divorce proceedings for a 17-year-old groom and his 14-year-old bride who married recently in an unauthorised, makeshift ceremony. Israeli media reported yesterday that the court had to issue the divorce after it was found that the ceremony the couple held conformed to Jewish religious law, even though Israeli civil law forbids minors under the age of 18 from marrying. The couple, who both come from religious families in Jerusalem, had recited the wedding vows in front of witnesses, exchanged an item of

value in the form of a ring, and had also consummated their union, the three requirements for marriage under Jewish religious law.

Make me an offer But when the groom’s parents heard about the ceremony, they insisted the couple get a divorce. The bride originally refused, but changed her mind after she was paid 10,000 shekels (Bt123,000). The divorce proceedings took place earlier this week. The Rabbinic Court was quoted as saying it was the “most unusual divorce on record, and certainly one involving the youngest”. When the girl receives her identity card at age 16, it will list her status as “divorced”.

HIV virus mutating far too fast

team of scientists on Wednesday said the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was swiftly evolving to avoid the body’s immune defences, a phenomenon that adds to the challenge of crafting an Aids vaccine. Mutations in HIV enable it to rapidly side-step genetic variations that offer a better natural shield against the deadly pathogen, they said in a study released by the journal Nature.

Too much, too soon “Even in the short time that HIV has been in the human population, it is doing an effective job of evading our best efforts,” said Oxford University researcher Philip Goulder. “This is high-speed evolution that we’re seeing.” Goulder’s team analysed genetic codes and viral strain of 2,800 infected people in North America, the Caribbean, Europe, subSaharan Africa, Australia and Japan. And they came across some bad news. They found that the virus is able to mutate when facing the more successful variants of these genes. This “escape mutation” is then transmitted on to the viral progeny and then handed on to the human population when another person becomes infected. “The virus is outrunning human variation, you might say,” said one of the researchers.

I

f Premier League football seems too polished and pompous, then Britain’s maddest match – a no-nonsense free-for-all that ends up in a river – is the perfect antidote. A quirky slice of British heritage, the Royal Shrovetide Football match is an adrenalinefuelled tradition dating back to at least the 12th century, and little has changed since then. Once a year, the quaint rural town of Ashbourne in Derbyshire splits into Up’ards and Down’ards – those born north and south of the River Henmore – for a blood-and-thunder ruck that rampages through the streets and surrounding fields. Pride and a place in history is at stake. The riverbank goals are millstones five kilometres apart and the few rules are straight and simple – in short, no killing, no hiding the ball and stay out of

the churchyard. Played every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday – which signal the start of the Christian season of Lent – this feisty game could not be further from the fancy flicks and feigned injuries of the English Premier League. “It’s rough. Really rough,” said Peter Rowbowtham, a member of the 10-strong committee, who estimated that 2,000 to 3,000 people take part. “There’s broken ankles … bust ribs. There’s no quarter given or taken, but there is integrity. If somebody goes down in the hug [the giant rolling ruck], they will pick them up,” the 73-year-old, who played for four decades, said. “You need a pair of strong boots and plenty of resilience. “There’s an honour to playing this game. People train from Christmas to get ready. It’s the heritage of Derbyshire. It makes you proud to be British.”

Kung-fu legend Jackie Chan said yesterday the auction of stolen Chinese bronzes was “shameful” and said he was working on a new movie about the theft of cultural relics. The actor said the Qing Dynasty bronze fountainheads looted by British and French forces from Beijing’s Summer Palace in the 1860s were China’s national treasures and demanded that the items be returned. The items were sold at a Christie’s auction in Paris on Wednesday. “They remain looted items, no matter whom they were sold to. Whoever took it out [of China] is himself a thief,” he fumed. Beijing yesterday accused the auction house of selling smuggled Chinese relics and demanded they be returned. But the French government said it received no official request and the sale went ahead after a Paris court threw out a last-ditch bid to remove the bronzes from the auction. – A F P

Celebrity poisoners Chinese celebrities will share liability if the food products they endorse prove to be unsafe, state media reported yesterday. The report by the China Daily gave no details on how stars would be held accountable under the draft law, but quoted a legal expert saying the “joint liability” provision would leave them open to compensation claims. The stipulation is part of China’s efforts to bolster food safety systems following a string of scandals that have killed or sickened consumers.

Moving mountains Nepal can be an uphill struggle if you don’t know the ropes – get some expert tips on avoiding the pitfalls

E

ighteen people including 14 European tourists aboard a small aircraft, were killed last October when it crashed at Nepal’s Lukla airport. The incident sparked concerns about air travel in the country, but figures show that Nepal still managed to attract more tourists in 2008 than at any time in the previous three decades. Along with its unspoilt countryside, most people come to Nepal to catch a glimpse of Mount Everest, whose summit Earth’s highest point. Travelling to Everest requires a measure of physical fitness, but also some knowledge of the country it rises from – one of the world’s poorest. Society in Nepal functions differently from anywhere else, with much of the country’s infrastructure in a dilapidated state.

First stop, a tour agency Waiting for luggage at Kathmandu airport is just a foretaste of what the average tourist can expect: if your bag is not on your plane, it might (just might) be on the next one. To avoid further pitfalls down the road, book your journey through an agency. “If you are young, flexible and spontaneous, you can look for a guide and porters when you arrive,” says Stefan Winter, a mountain guide from Munich’s German Alpine Association. “But if you have an accident in a remote area, you often have to wait for aid to arrive,” explains Rainer Hoerig, a researcher into tourism and development issues. He recommends hiring

someone familiar with Nepal’s terrain and who knows the local lingo. “Many Nepalese speak some English, but not all do and not all very well,” points out Winter. A tour agency can also help you avoid problems in Kathmandu’s Thamel, a tourist district which is notorious for people who offer spurious help to strangers, warns Ram Thapa, one of Nepal’s honorary consuls in Germany. Hiring guides and porters is not expensive and visitors can expect to pay between US$2 (Bt71) and $3 a day, says Thapa.

Anticipate delays Another thing to take into consideration is bureaucracy. Many regions of Nepal require visitors to have a trekking per-

mit. A guide, hired directly or booked through an agency, will take care of the formalities. Tourists rarely experience any serious problems in Nepal. Thapa advises taking at least one day’s delay into consideration when making plans. If you are planning to fly home on a Wednesday, and you make your way to Kathmandu on Tuesday, you could be in for a disappointment. If you intend travelling from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Thapa recommends taking one of the designated tourist buses. “They don’t take any local passengers, just foreigners.” As for air travel, Thapa advises against using the country’s national carrier, Nepal Airlines. Other carriers are okay in comparison.

Rod Stewart’s rusty vocal chords first tore into the UK music scene in the late ’60s and have been busy ever since. With his superstar lifestyle and rasping sound, he’s racked up almost 30 best-selling studio albums, a bunch of live recordings and some of the most infuriatingly catchy songs known to man. Look away now if you don’t want one in your head all day: “Do You Think I’m Sexy?”, “Maggie May”, “Sailing”, “This Old Heart of Mine”, “I Don’t Want to Talk About It”, “Have I Told You Lately (That I Love You)”. This Wednesday, the supermodel-loving, soccer-mad crooner is back in Bangkok for another live concert. We called him up in London for a little chat about the show.

,,

When were you last in town?

Which of your songs is your favourite?

I think it was the late ’80s. I remember it was extremely hot. I had a nice hotel suite but I didn’t get out much because I had food poisoning– not from Bangkok though. I’m looking forward to having a good look around this time.

They are all special, you know. They’re like children and they’re very personal to you. They make their way out into the world and you sort of lose them and they belong to everybody else.

What are you working on now? I’ve just started on a new album. It’s going to be retro, versions of great ’60s soul songs. I’m also working on my body, actually. I still play football.

What’s the concert going to be like this time round? Well, it’s going to be a twohour show of songs from the ’70s all the way through to today. It’ll be lively, spectacular, glamorous – something for everyone.

Who’s on your mind when you sing “Have I Told You Lately (That I Love You)”? I’m actually more concerned with the response from the audience than thinking about my wife or my children. It becomes impersonal really.

Do you sing in the shower? Never.

I’M ACTUALLY MORE CONCERNED WITH THE RESPONSE FROM THE AUDIENCE THAN THINKING ABOUT MY WIFE OR MY CHILDREN. IT BECOMES IMPERSONAL REALLY.

Battered down in Chiang Mai Up against a red wall, pride takes a fall By Paisarn Likhitpreechakul SPECIAL TO D A I LY X P R E S S

B A day to remember Because of the slander and physical threats that shut down the second Chiang Mai Gay Pride last Saturday (see the main story), February 21 is to be commemorated each year as End Violence against LGBT Day. Funds will be collected and activities organised, and an exhibition, tentatively titled “Who Killed Chiang Mai Pride?” is being discussed.

Premium ‘Milk’ The two Oscars it won on Monday can only enhance the fact that “Milk” delivers. The riveting Best Original Screenplay by Dustin Lance Black put Sean Penn right in the shoes of the slain American gay activist Harvey Milk. Viewers in India and other Asian countries, however, didn’t hear Penn and Black’s speeches at the Academy Awards ceremony. They were censored to avoid any reference to homosexuality. Shame on satellite broadcaster Star.

If walls could talk Join a full-day tour tomorrow of temple murals featuring scenes of same-sex love. Find the details at http://QueerFilm .wordpress.com or call (084) 667 2871.

y 5pm last Saturday when I arrived at the enclosed compound where the Chiang Mai Gay Pride Parade was to begin, the red shirts of Rak Chiang Mai 51 had already blocked two of the gates, trapping about 100 early birds inside. I had to walk around to the adjacent temple and climb over the wall to join them. The remaining marchers – 700 others – couldn’t get close. Screaming loud and clear that Chiang Mai culture has no place for gays and katoey appearing in public, the redshirt leaders took turns at blasting out homophobic abuse through loudspeakers mounted on trucks that had earlier roamed the city warning tourists to stay away or risk of getting hurt. Despite reassurances from the organising NGOs as to the

parade’s cultural sensitivity, the opponents continued their warnings about the destruction of northern culture and threatened violence unless the entire event was cancelled. Claiming that government agencies were opposed to the event and to the self-appointed “president of the Thailand Gay Association”, they bombarded the enclosure with water bottles, firecrackers and a bag of rotten pig blood. After evaluating the situation, we decided to sit it out, believing the protesters – most of them hired hands – would eventually become exhausted. As darkness fell with us showing no sign of giving up, the red-shirt leaders changed tactics and threatened to break in. We were told by the police in no uncertain terms to ac-

cept the protesters’ demands, which by that time included a promise to never plan a gaypride event in Chiang Mai again. They also wanted us to apologise to them and all citizens of the city. Concerned for the safety of participants, especially the many youngsters in the Youth Coalition, the organisers decided at 8pm to apologise to Rak Chiang Mai 51 in front of TV cameras.

Satisfied, they left – while some of us started crying. We set free into the air the rainbow balloons meant for the parade. In that moment of darkness, an antiviolence group of 20 people arrived at the compound in a candlelit procession to give us moral support. After a moment of mutual consolation, we all sat down for a group meditation and a prayer of peace and forgiveness. afael Benitez emphasised he had no intention of resigning at Liverpool amid the growing rumours and saluted his side for their 1-0 victory at old club Real Madrid in the first leg of the last 16 Champions League tie at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. Benitez has stalled on signing a new contract at Liverpool – where he has been manager since 2004 – and was peppered about questions over his future. “I was clear before the game that I was not thinking of resigning,” said Benitez. “I plan to keep working and hope things go well in the future. “We have plenty of time to talk over my contract. My

lawyer can talk with advisers.” Benitez is said to have a frosty relationship with feuding American co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks but his rapport with the fans remains intact as they chanted his name throughout the match. Yossi Benayoun’s late header gave Liverpool a vital away goal to cling to and sealed a magnificent win which was achieved without injured captain Steve Gerrard, while star striker Fernando Torres struggled through most of the match with an injury before being taken off. “We tried to play on the counter attack but it was difficult as we didn’t expect Torres to be injured from the first minute after he twisted his an-

kle,” explained Benitez. “We didn’t know about Gerrard [that he wouldn’t be available] until the last minute.” Gerrard had been out since the beginning of February with a torn hamstring and the injuryprone Torres now faces some time on the sidelines. “I was told by the doctor that Torres’s ankle wasn’t that bad and we could keep him on the pitch,” added Benitez. “He was struggling in the second half so we took him off for fresh legs. “Torres will probably now miss some games. We have a game in three days [against Middlesbrough] so it will be difficult for him to make that.” But it was job done for Benitez on his return to Real – where he coached the youth team – and Spain is proving a happy hunting ground for him. “Just because I’ve taken time off and away from a competitive environment, it doesn’t change the way you execute a golf shot. It’s still a golf shot. Walking on the tee, I was just in my own little world, just trying to make sure that I knew what the number was to the bunker, where the wind was coming from ... am I going to hit a flat three-wood, draw the ball – trying to decide what shot I want to hit.”

“This was a nice game to watch after the second goal went in – that is when I knew we had cracked them. We stand with one leg in the quarterfinals, we must not allow this position to slip. We have to put this victory behind us and remove the emotion from the occasion.”

Camp Nou in the first knockout stage of the 2007 Champions League and have now won at another fortress in the Bernabeu. An away goal means Liverpool can progress if they can shut Real out again at Anfield in the return leg on March 10 but Benitez warned it would not be easy. “Real are a good counter-attacking side and we will have to watch out for them in the second leg if we want to progress,” he added. Liverpool now have the edge in the tie but Real coach Juande Ramos says Real are capable of turning things around at Anfield. “We wanted to try and score a few goals for the second leg. They scored from a setpiece but it was meant to be a 00,” said Ramos. “One goal is not that big a lead and if we play well we can win

at any ground including Anfield.” For Liverpool eating into United’s seven-point lead in the Premier League title race is the next priority, starting with tomorrow’s match at Boro. “My idea is to take one game at a time and the next game is against Middlesbrough,” Benitez declared. “We just have to see our position in all competitions because all of them are difficult to win.” Liverpool saw their patience rewarded when Gabriel Heinze manhandled Dirk Kuyt to the right of the area to set up the deciding free kick. Madrid president Vicente Boluda had predicted a 3-0 victory for the hosts beforehand. “Experience tells you that you have to speak on the field and Liverpool’s players did that,” said Benitez.

only reward for a dominant first half display. Drogba could have added a second only to head wide from close range but Chelsea faded in the second half as they began to tire. Hiddink hinted that his predecessor Luiz Felipe Scolari’s brief reign had left Chelsea’s squad unprepared for the extreme physical demands of Champions League action. Several of Chelsea’s players, including John Terry and Frank Lampard, complained to Scolari that his training sessions were too relaxed and Hiddink gave credence to those complaints. “Didier and Nicolas Anelka got tired at the end and didn’t function so well. The rest of the team suffered from that,” Hiddink said. “Normally when we cannot maintain control in the whole game, one of the things can be we are not top, top physical level. In these high level games you must be at the very top fitness. It is not easy to control the whole game but with these players we should be able to do it for 90 per cent of the game.” Hiddink insists he has had no problems with the Drogba’s attitude since he took over. “Drogba has responded very well. He enjoyed training and has worked hard since I have been here,” he said.

uus Hiddink believes Chelsea are in pole position to reach the Champions League quarter-finals despite the slender margin of their last 16 first leg victory over Juventus. Hiddink’s side will travel to Italy for the second leg on March 10 with a 1-0 lead after Didier Drogba’s first-half header spoiled Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri’s return to Stamford Bridge. Although Ranieri was unable to gain immediate revenge over Blues owner Roman Abramovich, who sacked the Italian in 2004 to make way for Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Chelsea, he will fancy his chances of having the final word in Turin. But Hiddink knows Juventus will have to push forward more in the return and he expects Chelsea to take full advantage. “Of course it is good to have a cleansheet because now Juventus have to try to score at home,” Hiddink said. “It will be difficult. They are a balanced team, they are smart and are always dangerous around the box. “We will try to score there as well. If we try to play as we can do I see us having the advantage.” Drogba’s clinical 12th minute finish from Salomon Kalou’s pass was Chelsea’s

avel Nedved plans to retire at the end of the season, no matter how well Juventus fare. “I’m still enjoying playing but considering my physical and mental condition I understand that the time has come to make way for younger players – they deserve to play,” Nedved said after his side’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea on Wednesday. “Maybe you think I’m still young but I’m almost 37. I will quit at the end of the season, no matter how well we do in the Champions League or Serie A. The decision is final and I don’t think I will change my mind, I don’t need to. It is the right time to quit.” Nedved was reduced to tears when he was suspended for the 2003 Champions League final loss to AC Milan and he returned this season with the goal of winning the European title. Juventus missed two seasons in the Champions League as a result of the Italian match-fixing scandal. “I would love to finish my career with victory in the Champions League,” he said. “We haven’t got a good result tonight but it’s not over yet. Anything can happen in the return. I think it is 55-45 to them right now. It will be difficult, but not impossible.”

South Korean eclipses marquee names in Pattaya By Lerpong Amsa-ngiam DAILY XPRESS, Pattaya

ong Jin Joo stole the big guns’ thunder, firing a sixunder 66 to grab the lead in the opening round of the US$1.45 Honda LPGA Thailand at the Siam Country Club Pattaya Plantation yesterday. The South Korean, nicknamed Cinderella, had six birdies and an eagle against two bogeys in an impressive round that gave her a two-shot advantage over the American chasing pack. The 25-year-old has been in the Kingdom for a month, training with coach Ahn Joo Hwan in Ayutthaya for the event. Her long preparation paid off handsomely. “I felt really good coming into this tournament because I have a lot of confidence in my game. I have good feelings about my swing,’’ said

Hong Jin Joo’s month-long preparations in Ayutthaya paid off. Hong, who won the KolonHana Bank Championship in 2006. Most of the marquee names failed to deliver, world No 3 Paula Creamer being the exception. Angela Standford, Brittany Lang and Swede Helen Alfredsson. “I am well prepared. I was third here last time out and this time I’m going for the win. It was a good start but there are three more days,’’ said crowd darling Creamer, who patiently signed autographs for fans after her round. Meanwhile, world No 1

Lorena Ochoa was left shaking her head in disappointment time after time during her round. The Mexican missed several easy putts and had to settle for a 71 and 12th place. Defending champion Suzann Pettersen and runner-up Laura Davies were no where near the form they displayed in 2007. The Norwegian stumbled to a five-over 77 for joint 57th place in the 60-player field. Davies was a stroke better, tied at 51st. Junior Open champion Moriya Jutanugarn, 14, made the Kingdom proud by emerging as the best player among the Thais. Despite some disagreements with younger sister Ariya, who was caddying for her, Moriya hit a 73 for joint 21 place. “We had some small fights. This time she was the one who said, ‘I can come up with a better shot,’” said Moriya who caddied for her sister in 2007. “Now I understand how she felt. It was not easy out there with so many top players.”

efending champion Pornanong Phatlum of Thailand and South Korea’s Kim Hae-jung shared the lead with a two-round total of four-under 140 at the DLF Women’s Indian Open yesterday. The teenage Thai, the round one leader, shot an even par 72 but Kim caught up after checking out with a two-under 70. Another Thai, Nontaya Srisawang, 21, who has earned a conditional card to play in the USLPGA, shot the day’s lowest total of four-under 68 to move up to sole third spot. “I’m not worried sharing the lead with Kim [Haejung]. I played well today, except on the greens,” said Pornanong, who posted three birdies in all. Titiya Plucksataporn, who also plays on the Ladies European Tour, is alone in fourth, four shots off the leaders, after a oneover 73.

hailand will venture into unfamiliar territory at the FIBA Women’s Under-19 World Championship in July, the first top-flight junior basketball tournament the country has ever staged. The Kingdom’s best players will get their first crack at the world’s strongest junior basketball teams in the 16-strong event at the Thai-Japanese Youth Welfare Gymnasium between July 23 and August 2. Given the quality of the teams that qualified, local fans can experience first-hand what top-level basketball is all about. Yesterday’s first-round draw held at Radisson Hotel ensured some intriguing match-ups. The hosts were slotted into Group B along with European giants Lithuania and the Czech Republic as well as Brazil. The Thais will face the South Americans in the opening match. Just past high noon in the desert, Woods fired an 8-iron into 5 feet for birdie. Then came a gentle fist pump when his 3-iron from 237 yards on the par-5 second settled 4 feet from the cup for eagle. He closed out Brendan Jones of Australia with a 3-foot par on the 16th hole for a 3and-2 victory in his first competitive outing in the 253 days since he limped his way to an epic US Open title. “It felt like nothing had changed,” Woods said. “Walking down the fairway, it was like business as usual.” But this was no ordinary day. Thousands of fans scurried through the high desert, eager to see every shot from the world’s No 1 player.

Group A consists of Australia, France, Argentina and South Korea, while Group C is expected to be a close race, in which Asian champions Japan will face African counterparts Tunisia as well as Russia and Canada. Pipat Larpprathana, the Thai team manager, reckoned that surviving the group stage would be a tall order for his side. “I prefer to be realistic about our chances in the tournament. This is our

first experience in the world championship. Every team is strong but we’ll give our utmost and try to keep the pride of our country intact.” Pipat believes that the staging of such a premier competition should considerably boost Thais interest in basketball. “We hope the tournament revives the public’s waning interest in the sport. We’re also searching for a potential superstar with talent and charisma. “We want to create a new ‘Nong Waen’ [Sirirat Yonyothinkul] to stir up interest.”
