opes are running high that Chiang Mai zoo’s giant pandas, Chuang Chuang and Linhui, may soon have a baby or two. “There’s a possibility that Linhui might have ovulated twice. She may give births to twins,” Zoological Park Organisation director-general Sophon Damnui said yesterday. Two artificial inseminations have just been conducted for the panda couple. “Every step in the process went smoothly because we have been monitoring the pandas’ behaviour for a long time,” Sophon said. Chuang Chuang and Linhui flew in from China in late 2003 and over the past few years, experts have tried all sorts of ways to coax the female panda into getting pregnant.

Porn didn’t work… Tactics have included controlling Chuang Chuang’s weight and showing him panda porn. Artificial insemination was tried after natural mating didn’t work. Sophon said that officials would soon be dispatched to China to be trained as panda midwives and baby-panda carers. A snow machine is also on its way from the United States to Thailand. DAILY

The panel has found Colonel Pornprasert Karnjanarin, who is now at large, guilty of misappropriating funds and will now move to have him dismissed dishonourably from the force. Charges of malfeasance were filed against Pornprasert in early February last year, just two days before a resignation letter he had tendered was scheduled to take effect.

Other punitive measures against Pornprasert, and the decision on whether to charge him with criminal offences, rest with the police board. The committee is expected to make a decision within two or three months, Chaiyaporn said. Pornprasert will be dismissed from the force, he added.

atients will next year be feeling the benefit of an implantable pulse generator (IPG) made by Thai scientists and engineers for 10 times less than foreign versions. Project chief Dr Zeng Lertmanorat of Mahidol University’s Faculty of Engineering says that after two years developing the IPG, his team will test the device on animals before using it on humans next year at Siriraj and Ramathibodi hospitals.

One machine, many uses “The device uses electric current to stimulate nerves or muscles affected by disease or injury,” Zeng says. “The first tests will be on patients paralysed due to spine injury. The IPG is designed to help them stimulate movements, control breathing and pass urine. If successful, we will try it out on patients suffering from other diseases.” The IPG has been designed to ease symptoms of shaking in Parkinson’s patients, to correct abnormal heart rhythms, stimulate the inner ear for better hearing, and the vagus nerve to ease epilepsy symptoms. “The first 30 IPGs will be created for patients at Siriraj

counterparts, no battery is needed to run the Thai machine. “Patients can trust in our invention’s safety. The bio-compatible implant uses pulses that are generated electromagnetically.” The project is a team effort by several faculties at the university and has a budget of

Bt2.5 million from the Thailand Research Fund. As well as the IPG, the university’s students have created a functional electrical stimulation machine (FES) which is currently being used to stimulate the muscles of stroke victims undergoing physical therapy at Siriraj Hospital. Its use should spread to other hospitals next year. Both inventions were presented at a press conference yesterday at the Salaya campus in Nakhon Pathom to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the royal bestowal of the name “Mahidol” and its 121st year as a university.

Race to save beached whales and dolphins Rescuers worked yesterday to save dozens of whales and several dolphins stranded on a beach in Tasmania, the fourth beaching incident in recent months. The 194 pilot whales and half a dozen bottlenose dolphins got stranded on Sunday evening. Strandings happen periodically in Tasmania as whales go by during their migration to and from Antarctic waters, but scientists do not know why it happens. It is unusual, however, for whales and dolphins to get stranded together. Chris Arthur, of Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service, told Australian Broadcasting Corp that 54 whales and seven dolphins were still alive. Rescuers were keeping the animals wet and trying to determine how to move them out to open water. More than 100 residents had also volunteered to help. Arthur was optimistic about their chances but also expressed concern about a number of other whales just off shore. – A P

O

verweight and obese teenagers face similar risks of premature death in adulthood as adults who smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day, new Swedish research suggests. Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm used data from mandatory military conscription tests of some 45,000 18-year-old Swedish men in 1969-1970 for the study. The data included height, weight and muscle strength, as well as smoking and socioeconomic status. The re-

searchers tracked the participants until 2007 to study “allcause mortality”. The findings suggested a two-fold mortality risk increase in both obese nonsmoking men and men of normal weight who smoked more than 10 cigarettes a day.

Dying prematurely Being overweight also increased the risk of premature death, irrespective of smoking status, the researchers said, adding that the muscle tests the conscripts underwent helped them differentiate between very muscular men and

The researchers noted that they had only studied the links in men, and insufficient data for women and mortality risks were also influenced by changes in weight and smoking habits as adults. But these habits and the body mass index were often set “in early life”. Continued public health campaigns to tackle smoking and problems associated with overweight or obesity could help reduce the risk of premature death, said the Department of Medicine’s Dr Martin Neovius who led the study.

A cinema chain was yesterday accused of censorship for refusing to show a locally made feature film about ethnic tensions between Arabs and white Australians. Greater Union stopped showing the film after fights broke out following a screening in Sydney. Allanah Zitserman, the distributor of “The Combination”, said Greater Union was practising censorship. Film critic David Stratton defended the film and blasted Greater Union. “It’s akin to shooting the messenger,” he said. – DPA

Cai Mingchao of the Chinese National Treasures Fund says he won’t pay the US$39.6 million (Bt1.43 billion) for the Qing-dynasty rabbit and rat head.

Chinese buyer refuses to pay for bronzes A mystery Chinese bidder who bought two controversial bronze sculptures in a Paris auction has come out in public and refused to pay for the items, which China regards as looted art. Five days after auction house Christie’s spectacular sale of the art collection of late fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Berge, where the two lots raised China’s hackles, a Chinese man revealed he was the successful bidder. Cai Mingchao, a collection adviser for the Chinese National Treasures Fund, said he would not pay the US$39.6 million (Bt1.43 billion) the Qing-dynasty rabbit and rat head fetched. “What I want to stress is that this money cannot be paid,” said Cai. “Every Chinese would have liked to take this step at that moment, and I’m honoured to have the chance to make the bid,” he said. The organisation works for the return of looted art to China. “The fund faces great pressure and risks by bidding for the two sculptures, but this is an extraordinary method taken in an extraordinary situation, which successfully stopped the auction,” Niu Xianfeng, the fund’s deputy director, said at a press conference. The bronzes were allegedly looted from China by British and French troops in 1860. – D P A

he German who authorities say used the alias Clark Rockefeller to establish himself in wealthy circles in Boston, New York and Los Angeles is asking a judge to dismiss a charge that he gave a false name when he was arrested in the kidnapping of his daughter. Rockefeller, whose real identity is Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, was arrested last summer after he allegedly snatched his 7-year-old daughter during a supervised visit in Boston. Lawyers for the German national, who moved to the United States in the late 1970s, said that prosecutors failed to prove that he adopted the alias to throw the arresting officers off his trail.

Used it for ‘15 years’ The lawyers are asking a judge to drop the charge of providing a false name to police, arguing that he had used the name Clark Rockefeller for at least 15 years, including in a sworn affidavit to the grand jury. The motion to dismiss the charge was to be filed in Suffolk Superior Court. Gerhartsreiter’s attorneys argue that evidence presented before the grand jury “overwhelmingly established” that he was using the name “in good faith” as far back as 1993.

After investigators discovered his true identity, California authorities labelled the 47-year-old Gerhartsreiter a “person of interest” in the 1985 disappearance and presumed slayings of San Marino couple Jonathan and Linda Sohus. The suspect, who then went by the name Chris Chichester, was living in a guest house on their property. But Preston said discussions about end-of-life issues between doctor and patient will increase because of the new law, and he thinks that as time goes by more and more doctors who do not have a religious or philosophical opposition will be open to participating. upermodel Cindy Bishop takes notes on everything she sees on her travels outside Thailand, a habit that helped open a new career for her as a designer for swimwear brand Jantzen. Cindy, who’s part American, English, Thai and Indian, is yielding to Middle Eastern influences in her designs, returning from trips to Jordan and Morocco with notebooks full of sketches of carpets and the pressed leaves of plants. “Love is in the air,” she wrote on one page pasted with flower petals forming a heart. She’s happily married, but what in particular prompted that flash of creativity she won’t say. In Morocco she bought brightly coloured fabrics to inspire her next collection. In Jordan she recorded the hues of the desert, sky and sea. Once Cindy has discovered a fabric she likes, she draws designs for it in her notebook, complete with all the little details, from polka dots to bows. From these sketches the factory manufactures new swimsuits.

Harder than it looks It sounds easy enough, but Cindy admits the job isn’t perfect. “It’s a dilemma every designer faces,” she says. “You want to do something really artistic, but

IN THE END YOU HAVE TO MAKE SOMETHING THAT SELLS. Cindy Bishop, on fashion design in the end you have to make something that sells.” Cindy loves bikinis, but most Thais are too conservative to wear them, so her collection features longer tops, halter tops and skirts. And the economic recession isn’t helping. Fashion shows are less ritzy than they used to be, with organisers keeping in mind the buyers’ dire straits. So Cindy’s keeping prices lower, nothing more expensive than Bt4,000. Still, she has no trouble meeting her profit targets. And she’s not losing sight of the fun aspect of her work: As well as sneaking bikinis into her collection, she’s designing swimsuits for couples – matching items like the his-and-her trunks with the words “Just married” printed on the derriere.

fter a long wait, Nokia has finally jumped on to the touch-phone bandwagon with the latest and top-of-the-line model in its XpressMusic series – the 5800 XpressMusic. Since the 5800 is a touch phone, it obviously doesn’t have a keypad, which leaves plenty of room for the 3.2-inch screen, perfect for enjoying

videos and Web pages. The resolution is good too at 640 x 360 pixels. When playing a video, the display automatically switches to horizontal 16:9 resolution. It performed well in our test and switched back and forth for other applications without any problems. Like other models in the XpressMusic series, 5800 comes with a standard 3.5mm connec-

The same port can be used with the provided Nokia videoout cable allowing you to display video clips you captured with the phone on your TV. It’s also equipped with quite large stereo speakers so that you can share music with your friends. The Nokia 5800 comes with all necessary connectivity modes, such as 3G, EGRPS, WLAN, Bluetooth and highspeed USB 2.0. It also comes with a quality 3.2-megpapixel camera so you’ll be able to upload your photos to Facebook or any other socialnetworking site at your leisure. The 5800 can also be used as a navigation tool with its builtin GPS together with Nokia MPs or Google Maps. And when sending text messages, you can have a choice between handwriting recognition with the provided stylus or an on-screen Qwerty keyboard. My only gripe was an occasionally unresponsive touch screen, though that could have been caused by over-eager handling of too many earlier reviewers. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic retails for Bt13,520 complete with stand, stereo headset, A/V cable and eight-gigabyte microSD card.

IPOD MAGIC Man U keeper Foster deletes Tottenham in League Cup final penalty shootout A F P , London

F

rom razor-sharp reflexes to extraordinary courage, Ben Foster has been able to rely on some impressive qualities during his rise to prominence with Manchester United, but even he must have doubted the ability to squint at a tiny iPod video screen would ever come in handy. United goalkeeper Foster was the hero of his club’s League Cup final victory over Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday thanks to two fine saves during the match and another even more important intervention in the penalty shoot-out. It was Foster’s superb stop of Jamie O’Hara’s spot-kick in the penalty finale that gave United the push they needed to lift the League Cup – and he had no qualms about revealing the secret of his success. United’s goalkeeping coach Eric Steele had made a compi-

lation of video clips of Tottenham’s players taking penalties in previous matches and put them onto an iPod so Foster could get a glimpse of where they were likely to put their spot-kicks. In the final moments before the shoot-out Foster could be seen intensely studying the iPod with Steele. It was time well spent. He plunged to his left to keep out O’Hara’s penalty – crucially denting Tottenham’s morale after just one kick – and also went the right way as David Bentley shot wide. “Me and Eric Steele looked at a little iPod before the penalties were taken. It had a video of their penalty takers,” Foster said. “It’s a new one for us. When Eric came to the club I’d never seen anything like it before. I don’t think any of us had. It’s a fantastic tool for us.” Foster also sought advice

from Edwin van der Sar, United’s regular keeper, who was rested as Sir Alex Ferguson gave some of his understudies a chance to take the limelight. “Edwin hasn’t got a bad record on saving penalties. I just remember him saying that if any of the young Tottenham lads step up then try to do everything within the laws to be intimidating,” Foster said. “I stood up for as long as possible with O’Hara and just managed to get my hand to it.” After three and a half years consigned to the role of a bit part player at United, Foster, who has had two loan spells at Watford, is finally starting to feel at home with the Premier League champions. This was just Foster’s seventh United start thanks to an unfortunate combination of van der Sar’s superb form and a cruciate knee ligament injury that sidelined him for 12 months.“To finally get my hands on a medal, and the way it was done, was a massive boost to me,” Foster said.

CLASSY AUSSIE Bogey-free Ogilvy routs Englishman Casey to win Match Play AP,Marana, Arizona

G

eoff Ogilvy won the Accenture Match Play Championship for the second time in four years with a 4-and3 victory over Paul Casey of England to stake his claim yesterday as the best in the world at match play. In a relentless performance at Dove Mountain, the 31-year-old Australian did not trail over the final 63 holes of the tournament and did not have a bogey on his card over the last 57 holes. He took the lead with a 6-foot birdie on the first hole of a 36hole title match, and never gave Casey a chance. Ogilvy had a 3up lead after the morning round, then shot 31 on the front nine to pull away. A tournament that began with so much buzz over the return of Tiger Woods ended with a newfound appreciation for the match-play prowess of Ogilvy, who ran his career record to 18-3 in this fickle format. “The best thing I can say is I enjoy the format,” Ogilvy said. “Generally, when you enjoy something, you do it well.” Ogilvy won his third World Golf Championship – he will defend his title in two weeks at Doral in the CA Championship – the most of any player besides Woods, who has won 15 of these elite events. And while Woods is a threetime winner of the Match Play

He lost in the championship match two years ago to Henrik Stenson, and lost in the first round last year to Justin Leonard. Casey, who brought a 16-3-1 record in match play into the final, faced a 3-up deficit after the morning match and knew he had to play well to get back in the game. He birdied three of his next eight holes, and Ogilvy still stretched his lead to 5 up. “I have no excuses right now,” Casey said. Ogilvy closed him out with a 6-foot birdie on the 15th hole. ing. He became the first player this year with multiple victories on the PGA Tour, having opened the year with a wire-towire win at Kapalua. This was like a home game. Ogilvy now has won three times in the Tucson area over the last five years, starting with a victory in the old Tucson Open in 2005, before the Australian was eligible for the 64-man field at the Match Play. Since then, Ogilvy has won a US Open, three WGCs and the winners-only Mercedes-Benz Championship. Casey came into the final match having led 79 of the 80 holes he had played in his five previous 18-hole matches.

Boonsak on a shuttle to world No1 Boonsak Ponsana has a tough road ahead in the All-England Championship, which starts today at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. The Thai ace is likely to meet top seed and world No 1 Lee Chong Wei in the second round. The Malaysian is one opponent Boonsak will dread facing, having lost six out of their seven encounters. The world No 12, who claimed the India Grand Prix Gold title last year, battles little-known German Marc Zwiebler in the opening round for a crack against Lee, who should have few problems disposing of China’s Yi Lu. Four other Thais – Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk (men’s singles), Porntip Buranaprasertsuk (women’s singles), Songphon Anugritayawon and Sudket Prapakamol (men’s doubles) – will be in action, seeking places in the main draw. Boonsak’s younger sister Salakjit opens her campaign against German Juliane Schenk in the women’s singles. The mixed duo of Sudket and Saralee Thoungthongkam are the only Thais seeded in the prestigious tournament. The eighth seeds take on Malaysians Halim Haryanto and Yun Peng. Mourinho’s Inter Milan show title spirit in six-goal thriller against Roma at home Inter Milan twice came back from two-goal deficits against AS Roma to snatch a thrilling 3-3 draw at the San Siro on Sunday and extend their lead at the top of Serie A to seven points. Jose Mourinho’s team looked to be heading for more heartache following their footballing lesson by Manchester United in the Champions League in midweek as they trailed 2-0 and

3-1.But a brace from teenager Mario Balotelli and a late equaliser from Hernan Crespo stole a share of the spoils and helped to maintain a sizeable gap to second-placed Juventus, who beat Napoli 1-0 on Saturday. “That’s a golden point for us,” said Mourinho. “We lacked intensity and concentration following our Champions League efforts. “At 3-1 down the match

Hernan Crespo after scoring against Roma. seemed over, even I thought it was. But the team’s character made the difference.”

Straight after the break Inter were given a lifeline as Adriano teed up Balotelli to beat Doni at his near post. But Inter’s reprieve didn’t last long as Matteo Brighi ran through a gap in the home defence on 57 minutes before rifling home from outside the area. Inter quickly pulled a goal back as Balotelli scored from the spot after the referee had given a penalty for a foul on

the teenage forward. That decision left Roma boss Luciano Spalletti livid. “From the bench it seemed to me as if Balotelli dived, and the TV images confirm that. It’s obvious it wasn’t a penalty,” he said. Inter kept plugging away and two veteran substitutes fashioned an equaliser as Luis Figo crossed for Crespo to nod home 11 minutes from time. AFP

Don’t panic, Barca coach tells his beaten players AFP, Madrid

arcelona coach Josep Guardiola insisted yesterday that he will not press the panic button despite the Spanish giants suffering backto-back league defeats. Less than a month ago, Barcelona were coasting to the La Liga title with a healthy 12point lead over bitter rivals Real Madrid, thanks to a run of 22 championship games without defeat. But on Sunday, they twice surrendered the lead to lose 4-3 to Atletico Madrid, a heartbreaking setback coming on the back of a shock defeat against relegation-haunted Espanyol and a 1-1 Champions League draw at Lyon. “We have had a big advantage and Real Madrid have cut it back by eight points in three weeks. But we will continue forward,” said Guardiola whose team’s lead at the top is now just four points. “We lost a game which was up and down, very exciting and I have to give credit to Atletico but we will now continue as before. “Atletico play a very direct style of football and it caused problems. It was a game with plenty of chances, typical of an Atletico Madrid versus Barcelona game.” Thierry Henry put Barcelona ahead with a fine strike from 25 yards after 18 minutes before Lionel Messi, on the half-hour

Diego Forlan, right, and Sergio Aguero, second right, celebrate the former’s goal against Barcelona mark, produced a trademark dribble before finishing in style to make it 2-0. Diego Forlan brought Atletico back into the match with a spectacular 30-yard drive before Sergio Aguero got the first of his brace after 56 minutes to level at 2-2. Barcelona re-established their lead when Eidur Gudjohnsen unselfishly played in Henry for his second in the 73rd minute. But Atletico were not finished and Forlan again scored, this time from the penalty spot in the 80th minute, before Aguero struck in the 89th minute to win the match. Atletico coach Abel Resino, whose team occupy fifth place,

ATLETICO MADRID PLAY A VERY DIRECT STYLE OF FOOTBALL AND IT CAUSED PROBLEMS.IT WAS GAME WITH PLENTY OF CHANCES. Josep Guardiola

singled out his players’ battling qualities. “Against a good side we had a first half where we maintained our composure despite the onslaught. Each day I feel as though we are getting better and the team has shown character,” he said. “We never eased off despite being 2-0 down. Aguero was sensational and his attitude has been contagious. Meanwhile, the pressure is growing on Valencia coach Unai Emery as his side followed their midweek Uefa Cup elimination with a 2-1 home defeat by Valladolid. After a bright start to the season, Valencia have tumbled to sixth and have now gone more than a month without a win.

ayern Munich coach Jurgen Klinsmann admitted his side lacked urgency and were lethargic on Sunday as 10-man Werder Bremen held the defending champions to a 0-0 draw. “In the second half, we no longer showed the urgency you need to win a game like that,” Klinsmann admitted with his side now fifth in the league. “However, we’re not dissatisfied. Obviously, we’d have liked all three points, but going home with a point isn’t a bad result, although it’s only a small step forward. “It was important to at least draw here. The title race will go to the last day. “Obviously, we’d rather be a couple of places higher up the table. But we’re on the case, we won’t let up, and we hope we’re top after 34 matches.”

‘No shame in second’ Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has brushed aside his side’s Premier League title decline by insisting that finishing second will still be an achievement. “Second would still be an achievement, but we have to think about getting three points against Sunderland and then our position because where we will finish will depend on United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Aston Villa,” said Liverpool’s Spanish manager. “We just have to keep doing our job. We just have to keep trying to improve.”

THESPORT As Ryan Giggs strolled down the Wembley tunnel after helping Manchester United maintain their remarkable bid for five trophies in one season, the Welsh midfielder’s thoughts turned to the club’s historic treble-winning campaign a decade ago. Moments earlier Giggs had slotted home the first of United’s four successful spot-kicks in their League Cup final penalty shoot-out victory over Tottenham. He joined in as his teammates soaked up the postmatch party atmosphere on the pitch, but Giggs has been around for too long to dwell overly on any victory – even one that gave him the 22nd winners’ medal of his career. Instead Giggs was keen to weigh up the impact Sunday’s success could have on United’s attempt to land all five major competitions they have entered this season. The last time United enjoyed such a momentous campaign was back in 1999 when Giggs helped Sir Alex Ferguson’s team win the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup. “Momentum is key at this part of the season. It’s what every team wants. Hopefully we’ve got that,” Giggs said. “We had it in ‘99 and hopefully we can do it again.”

Aguero the annihilator

No match for Ogilvy

Atletico-Barca clashes are usually full of goals and controversy – and Sunday’s game was no exception. Atletico came back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to score an epic win, with two goals apiece from South American strikers Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan. “I dedicate this win to our fans,” Forlan gasped. “They were wonderful tonight.” >PAGE 27
