It might be difficult to change habits that have grown with consumerism, but if we can, the results will be a cleaner and more secure future for ourselves and our descendants.

The bead was on loan from the Sutee Ratana Fo u n d a t i o n and had been on display Bunchar since December 19 as part of the “Bead and Beyond” exhibition. The exhibition has now been suspended. “We are upgrading security measures and the exhibition will reopen on Thursday,” said Thanit. He added that the institute had contacted police and relevant agencies, and the hunt for the bead was underway. Dr Bunchar Pongpanich, the owner, said there were fewer than 50 such beads in the world. “And the sun god bead that was stolen is in especially good condition,” he said. DAILY

he Public Health Ministry is teaming up with the National Statistical Office (NSO) and other relevant agencies to study the mental health problems in 52,000 households nationwide in a bid to tackle a rising problem, a senior health official said yesterday. Dr Chatree Bancheun, chief of the Department of Mental Health, said research teams from the NSO and Mahidol University’s Institute for Population and Social Research would conduct a one-year study from May on the stress caused by the economic crisis, and come up with appropriate

treatments. This move comes after just-released results from a study on 28,500 people across the country show that one in five people suffer depression due to a breakdown in family communication. Among its other findings were that mental problems increase with age, and that

STUDYING AND PRACTISING DHARMA IS AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH. women – especially family breadwinners – were more at risk of mental health problems than men. Blue-collar workers were also found to be in the firing line, three times more likely to suffer stress than a government official. One bright ray of light came with the news that studying

and practising the dharma was an effective way of improving mental health quality. The bigger picture was bleak though, with 46 per cent falling below the standard for good mental health.

Key to lifelong protection Apichart Chamrasritrong of Mahidol University advises parents to give strong moral direction to their children from an early age, which should help them achieve good mental health for their whole life. Chatree adds that people should remember that problems can be resolved with right action rather than merely worrying helplessly. People should keep socially active, enabling them to help and forgive others, he says. This is more likely to lead to happiness than sitting in front of a television.

ith fine-particle dust levels in Chiang Mai province having exceeded safe levels for three to four consecutive days now, Governor Wibul Sanguanpong has instructed fire trucks to spray water around the City Hall complex so as to alleviate the pollution problem.

‘No exercising outdoors’ Meanwhile Nakhonphing Hospital director Dr Chatchawal Sirinirand reports a 40-

per-cent increase in patients suffering from sinusitis compared to late 2008 and a 20per-cent increase in respiratory problems. He urged members of the public, especially children and the elderly, to refrain from exercising outdoors. The Northern Meteorological Centre forecasts hot and dry days ahead for the upper-northern region, with temperatures rising to between 34 and 39 degrees Celsius.

Rain-making missions Somchai Reungrithinareuparp, director of the royal rainmaking operation centre for the region, said his office had been running rain-making missions since February 10 with six flights per day. But the very dry weather, forest fires and clearance of trees and shrubs by farmers is causing a continuous pollution haze reaching a height of 4,000 metres. The 10-per-cent air humidity is also a key obstacle – levels

need to be up to 60 per cent for rain-making to be effective, he said. However the centre will continue to focus on encouraging pockets of humidity between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son, and Lampang and Lamphun, in a bid to increase humidity over the whole of the Chiang Mai-Lamphun plain. Surapol Leelawaroros, director of the 16th conservation area office’s forest fire operation division, said this February had seen some 5,000

South Korean actress found dead Police say a 26-year-old actress from the popular South Korean TV series “Boys Over Flowers” has been found dead in an apparent suicide. Police said yesterday that Jang Ja-yeon’s sister discovered the actress’s body at their home in the Seoul suburb of Bundang on Saturday.

String of celeb suicides Her death is the latest in a string of celebrity suicides in South Korea. Choi Jin-sil hanged herself in October. She was one of the country’s most famous actresses. The body of actor Ahn Jaewhan was discovered in an abandoned car a month before that. Police say Jang had a history of depression. The model-turned-actress played one of a trio of girls that bullies the female lead of the show. AP

he lower the sun is in the sky the less harmful its ultraviolet rays are for the body’s skin, according to Professor Hans Meffert writing in German medical journal Aktuelle Dermatologie. The intensity of the ultra violet rays can be assessed by comparing the body with the length of the shadow cast by the sun, Meffert added.

ULTRAVIOLET RAYS POSE A SMALL RISK TO SKIN TYPE II, WHICH IS COMMON IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE.

Ultraviolet rays pose a small risk to skin type II, which is common in the Northern Hemisphere, when your shadow is approximately a third longer than your body. If your shadow is shorter than your body-length, you must protect your skin with extra clothing, sun cream or by moving into the shade. The advantage of this method of judging the risk is that the relationship between shadow-length and ultraviolet intensity is independent of the season, the time of day and geographical location.

Gunman stuns US church-goers, kills pastor A gunman stunned parishioners at a midwestern US church on Sunday when he strolled into a service and opened fire, spraying the pastor’s Bible with bullets before shooting him dead at point-blank range. The shooter, who has not been identified, walked down the centre aisle of First Baptist Church in Maryville, Illinois, exchanged a few words with head pastor Fred Winters and then fired four shots with a .45 caliber handgun, officials said. The first shot hit the pastor’s Bible and “exploded the top of the Bible into what many in the congregation thought was confetti”, said Larry Trent of the Illinois state police. Then, a bullet hit the pastor in the chest. The gunman subsequently pulled out a knife and began stabbing himself when the gun jammed. Some parishioners tackled him and pinned him to the floor. – A F P

man dubbed the “Swiss Gigolo” pleaded guilty yesterday to charges of cheating and blackmailing a string of super-rich lovers, including Germany’s richest woman, BMW heiress Susanne Klatten, 46. The charges are “in essence” accurate, 44-yearold Helg Sgarbi’s lawyer told the court on the first day of his trial in the southern city of Munich. Sgarbi is accused of trying to extort ¤14 million (Bt638 million) from Klatten, the publicity-shy mother-ofthree, after he threatened to publicise secret video recordings of them having sex. It is unclear whether Klatten and three other women Sgarbi is alleged to have seduced and defrauded will testify against him.

Washing machine, not pill, liberated women? A F P , Vatican

T

he washing machine has had a greater liberating role for women than the pill, the official Vatican daily said in an International Women’s Day commentary. “The washing machine and the emancipation of women: put in the powder, close the lid and relax,” said the headline on the article in Osservatore Romano. “In the 20th cenutry, what contributed most to the emancipation of western women?” questioned the article. “The debate is still open. Some say it was the pill, others the liberalisation of abortion, or being able to work outside the home. Others go even further: the washing machine,” it added. The long eulogy to the washing machine – for which the first rudimentary models appeared in the 18th century – highlighted “the sublime mystique to being able to ‘change the sheets on the beds twice a week instead of once’,” the paper quoted late American feminist Betty Friedan. Technology has developed so quickly that now there is “the image of the super woman, smiling and radiant among the appliances of her house”, wrote Osservatore.

BMW heiress Susanne Klatten

Sgarbi, who has been in custody since his arrest in Austria last year, faces four counts of serious fraud and two charges of attempted

blackmail. Media claim Sgarbi was a serial seducer who approached his wealthy victims at luxury hotels and duped them into thinking he loved them.

Parting with millions He persuaded them to give him millions of euros by inventing stories about needing money to pay compensation for a child he injured in a car accident. In some versions the acci-

dent happened in the United States, in others it was in Italy where the Mafia got involved and was demanding “silence” money from him. Two of the women handed over hundreds of thousands of euros. Klatten was also tricked into parting with ¤7 million. But Sgarbi wanted more. Klatten went to police and exposed Sgarbi after he contacted her asking for a large sum of money in return for his silence. “That was a moment of clarity: you are now the victim and you have to defend yourself. I am now defending myself in the name of all women in my family and also in the name of many other women,” Klatten told the newspaper Financial Times Deutschland in her only interview on the subject.

organisers have freed up a budget of Bt20 million to ensure that everyone has a good time. On the theme “Amazing Music, Amazing Pattaya”, the festival will as usual be presented on three stages musically categorised by colour. Bali Hai Pier will be dressed in orange to represent pop and rock and will feature Infinity, Golf-Mike, Ice Sarunyu, Hangman, Zeal, Clash, Potato,

Ebola, Paradox, Big Ass and Bodyslam. The second stage at Central Pattaya is blue for hip-hop, modern rock and luk thung. Acts include AB Normal, So Cool, Sweet Mullet, Blackhead, Playground, Pancake, HIP Army, Jay Jetrin and Joey Boy. Pattaya Soi 4 is green for easy-listening, smooth jazz and chill-out and will be the venue for Sweetnuch, Bossa Blossom, Herspective, Hum, Doobadoo, Rose Sarinthip, Pomelo Town, Tabasco, Getsunova and Supersub.

Its ease of use is where it lands telling punches, though, with large icons scrolled through via a sensitive diamond-shaped finger pad. Computers like it too, treating it as a simple USB storage device that MP3 files can be drag-and-dropped into without the compatibility problems you get with other players. It also gets some clean hits over rivals with the sound quality of music, but uncompressed files in the loss-less FLAC format may take up the 4GB memory fast. To play compressed-format MP3, WMA or OGG files, the YP-Q1 uses Samsung’s DNSe 3.0 (Digital Natural Sound engine) to compensate for the lost detail. Sound-quality geeks might consider upgrading the headphones, though. My only minor gripe was with that control pad, which is so touch-sensitive that it takes time to get used to. YP-Q1 also comes with an FM tuner and the ability to record your favourite radio show, as well as a voice-recorder function.

Another nice feature is the textto-speech technology that reads out English text for you. Light, slim and a good fit for your shirt pocket, the YP-Q1 comes in black, white and silver models and has a suggested retail price of Bt4,490.

Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

Today’s Birthday: You have to be ready to jump, make changes and do things differently. Your ability to adapt quickly will determine your fate. You will have the drive but the focus may be lacking. Be realistic, practical and patient in order to balance your life. ARIES *** March 21-April 19 You can’t wait for others to do things - it’s crucial that you do what needs to be done on your own. Put everything else on hold and focus on the most important things in your life. TAURUS ***** April 20-May 20 You don’t have to be open about what you are planning to do. Surprise everyone with your actions and your plans. A short trip to have a oneon-one conversation will pay off.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★★

GEMINI ** May 21-June 20 Don’t give in to what everyone else thinks or wants to do. Follow your own ideas and, if that means opening up new friendships, that’s what you have to do. You can’t let anyone hold you back. CANCER **** June 21-July 22 Making a residential move, changing jobs or even just doing things a little differently will make your life easier. Assess your situation and act accordingly. LEO *** July 23-Aug. 22 Love may be up for grabs or a relationship you are in can take a turn for the best. Get in contact with someone you miss. Looking back will help you realise what you have and what you want. VIRGO *** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Anxiety is likely to develop if you are involved in personal talks or partnership disputes. Listen to get a better understanding of what needs to be done. Don’t give in but do find a solution.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

LIBRA *** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 Don’t get too caught up in what’s happening at work or with your peers. Keep things light and concentrate on your personal life. Getting involved in a creative hobby will bring rewards. SCORPIO **** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 You’ve got too much going for you to give in to someone’s complaints. If you need to get out of the house in order to achieve peace of mind, do so. Don’t let anyone stifle your plans. SAGITTARIUS ** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 Don’t make a move unless you want to backtrack. Sit tight and wait to see what everyone else does first. Sudden changes at home or with friendships may be alarming but it’s time to move on.

Sharpshooting Ray Allen tried to carry the Boston Celtics over the finish line, but the load proved to be too heavy. Dwight Howard scored 18 points with 15 rebounds, and a pair of gamesealing free throws with 13.9 seconds left, as the Orlando Magic held off a late charge to beat the injury-depleted Boston Celtics 86-79. “Our guys Dwight Howard were fighting very hard,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “I thought for a while we lost our fight, but we did a good job of finishing out the game.” – DPA

Windies blow out England’s hopes England’s bid for a series-levelling victory ran into trouble when West Indies avoided following on in the fifth and final Test on Sunday. England had a chance to put West Indies under pressure when skipper Chris Gayle hobbled away with a hamstring injury immediately after reaching his 10th Test hundred, an even, undefeated 100. But left-handers Brendan Nash (70 not out) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (52 not out) each hit half-centuries and shared an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 146 to carry West Indies to 349 for four, replying to England’s first innings total of 546 for six declared, when stumps were drawn on the third day at Queen’s Park Oval. – AFP

Confident Real Madrid ready to take on Liverpool and the fiery Anfield fans AFP, Madrid

R

eal Madrid’s veteran defender Michel Salgado knows what it feels like to beat Liverpool at Anfield having triumphed 1-0 with former club Celta Vigo in a Uefa Cup match there a decade ago. He now believes Real can overturn their 1-0 first leg deficit when they meet Liverpool in tonight’s Champions League duel. Real were out of sorts in a fortunate 1-1 draw with derby rivals Atelico Madrid on Saturday as they fell six points behind Barcelona in the title race and their coach Juande Ramos has openly admitted that Europe could be a better hope for silverware this season.

“It was a great Celta team back then but nevertheless it was quite a shock to win at Anfield,” Salgado told Real’s homepage. “It is a very special stadium, different to all the rest. “It’s atmosphere makes you do your best, which is why I’ve been saying it’s possible to win there, especially if you are Real Madrid. We will enjoy the atmosphere at the stadium.” Liverpool sat back in the first leg in Madrid and scored a vital late away goal through Youssi Benayoun but Madrid’s Portuguese stopper Pepe believes Liverpool will come out to attack and that will leave gaps for Real to exploit. “It will be different to the first match because at Anfield I

don’t think Liverpool will be as defensive as they were at the Santiago Bernabeu,” said Pepe. “We have to take advantage of that to qualify for the next round.” Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is back to fitness after missing the Real match through injury but Pepe believes Rafa Benitez’s side are so strong because they function as a unit. “What concerns me is Liverpool’s collective strength,” said Pepe. “They all work hard and know their roles on the pitch. They all have quality and in Madrid we didn’t notice Gerrard’s absence too much. We have to be very focused if we want to win this match.” Real coach Juande Ramos admitted the performance against Atletico was below par but said his team were now psyched up for the trip to Anfield as they

“Manchester United were awesome when they beat Fulham, so it won’t be easy, but now is the time to step up and be men. We have had to do it the hard way this season, so if anyone deserves to get to Wembley, it’s us. The fans will enjoy Wembley, but we want the trophy.”

“We have a clear idea of what we have to do – score twice. The other day we were hit strongly by the defeat [against Liverpool], but we know we are going to have our chances and we are not going to give up. We are capable of beating Liverpool at Anfield.”

ious to play the derby and we are very excited about the match in Anfield. We must now think about how to make a comeback in the knock-out stage. “We are still alive in both La Liga and the Champions League, and we want to stay that way. We will work along the same lines and learn from our mistakes, always keeping an eye on both competitions. “It will be a tough game full of passion. The players are fired up to produce a good performance in Liverpool and give the fans something to cheer about.” Real have failed to get past the quarter-finals since 2003 and Ramos, who only has a sixmonth contract until the end of the season, could do with a good Champions League run to convince the demanding Madrid hierarchy to keep him on for next season.

uventus coach Claudio Ranieri will be looking to get one over his former employers when the Italian giants face Chelsea in the Champions League tonight for a place in the quarter-finals. Juve need to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the second round, first leg at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago and Ranieri would like nothing more than to eliminate the team that sacked him five years ago. Ranieri enjoyed four years of varying success in west London from 2000 to 2004 before he was fired by billionaire owner Roman Abramovich despite just having led the Blues to their highest league finish in 49 years – second. Chelsea went from strength to strength under Ranieri’s successor Jose Mourinho but that won’t have come as any solace to the injustice Ranieri will have felt at having been given the push. One of the reasons for his demise at Stamford Bridge was his constant meddling with his team and formation, something that earned him the nickname “the Tinkerman” in England. Things haven’t changed in Italy as he rested a host of first choice players for Saturday’s 1-0 derby victory

away to Torino and he revealed more changes are possible Tuesday. “We played three days before [the Torino game] against Lazio and for me it was very important to rotate the players and of course on Tuesday there will be a different team,” he said. “It’s a huge game for us and for Chelsea. We’re the underdogs and they are the favourites but in front of our crowd we will try to do something special. “We have a lot of respect for the Chelsea team and we’ll keep trying until the end of the match.” Although Juventus have far greater European pedigree than Chelsea, things have changed in recent years to make the Italians the underdogs. Facing him is a Chelsea team that is unbeaten under caretaker boss Guus Hiddink, the Russia coach. “Hiddink is a great manager but sooner or later he has to lose,” added Ranieri. “For him it’s not easy but [Luis Felipe] Scolari and Mourinho played like he plays, it’s normal for him to play 4-3-3 so not a lot has changed.” Chelsea have been more solid under Hiddink and they also have the added bonus of Michael Essien coming back to fitness and Didier Drogba returning to form.

hon Buri coach Kiatisak “Zico” Senamuang is eyeing a three-point haul against Hong Kong’s Eastern Athletic as the team starts its AFC Cup campaign with a home tie at Supachalasai stadium today. The Thai side, who were Thailand Premier League runners-up last year, are stepping down into the continent’s second-tier cup competition, having contested the AFC Champions League last term. Despite the fact that the domestic league’s new season only started at the weekend, former national striker Kiatisak believes his troops are ready physically to make waves in the Asian equivalent of Uefa Cup. Even though Chon Buri, pitted in Group G, are considered firm favourites, Kiatisak remains wary of the threat the visitors pose to his men. “They’re a decent team. It is made up of players from both Hong Kong’s senior and youth teams, so we mustn’t underestimate them. “We’ll definitely field our strongest side. We’ll attack from the start to entertain the crowd. I’m certain that if we score early, it will be a goal feast.”

BIG BREAKTHROUGH South Korean Yang takes Honda classic with calm display AP, Florida

ang Yong-eun recorded his first PGA Tour win on Sunday, closing out a one-shot victory over John Rollins at the Honda Classic. The South Korean took command with three straight birdies on the front side and wouldn’t fold, picking up a twoyear exemption and a cheque for $1,008,000. With the win, he qualified for next week’s CA Championship at Doral, plus earned an invitation to next month’s Masters. Best known for beating Tiger Woods at the HSBC Champions in 2006, Yang pumped his fist in the air when his 50-footer for birdie stopped a foot away from the cup, sealing the victory. He finished at 9-under 271. Rollins made birdie at the par-5 18th to get within two shots of Yang, who was one hole behind and in a greenside

And when Yang’s 10-footer for par tailed right and stopped short, the lead – four shots earlier in the day – was down to one. He cringed when his third shot sailed off target at the finishing hole, but coolly twoputted for the win. “From 50 feet, it’s not easy to do that to win your first golf tournament,” Rollins said. “My hat’s off to him.”

Rollins (67) was alone in second and he, like Yang, qualified for the CA Championship by moving into the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings. Ben Crane (68) was third after finishing 6 under and Jeff Klauk (71, with 17 pars and one bogey) was alone in fourth, another shot back. “All in all, I have no complaints,” Rollins said. “I did all I can do. Shot 3 under on champi-

onship Sunday and came up short, but I gave myself a chance.” Erik Compton’s inspiring week ended with a 72, finishing tied for 44th at 3 over. The twotime heart transplant recipient said he struck the ball well but simply couldn’t score, threeputting from 20 feet at the first, missing a tap-in at 15, and not making anything longer than 8 feet all day. He will play next week on a sponsor’s exemption in Puerto Rico, take a week off, then finish the month at Bay Hill. And while walking the 72 holes left him a bit tired – he is nine months removed from getting his third heart – Compton refused to make excuses. “I’m just stupid to think that I can play well enough to win out here,” Compton said. Safe to say, Yang was feeling better than Compton. He took a job on a driving range at age 19 and didn’t break 100 the first time he played. Now, the son of vegetable farmers is a PGA Tour winner.

hailand has been pumped up to become the official weightlifting hub of Asia by the International Weightlifting Federation, who announced the move at a recent meeting in Hungary. The Kingdom will also be the venue for the weightlifting at the Youth Olympic Games to be hosted by Singapore next year. Maj Gen Intharat Yodbangtoey, president of the Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association, said the meeting reviewed the progress of the inaugural World Youth Weightlifting Championships, which will take place in Chiang Mai from May 20 to 24. Intharat said the world body made Thailand the weightlifting training centre of Asia because of its impressive credentials. “We have hosted several major events in the past, and it helped,” Intharat said.

BANGKOK

THESPORT When it comes to experience of high-pressure European encounters, Real Madrid can hardly be placed in the category of innocent novices. But even a club that can point to a trophy cabinet weighed down by nine European Cups, occasionally finds itself confronted with a new frontier, and tonight’s visit to Liverpool certainly has that kind of feel about it. Having lost the tactical battle in the Bernabeu two weeks ago, Real’s players will duck under the “This is Anfield” sign with some trepidation before they embark on their attempt to overturn a 10 deficit against opponents for whom the Champions League looks increasingly like a last chance of silverware this season. One veteran of such occasions is expecting the magical atmosphere of Anfield on a European night to compromise Real’s chances of denying Liverpool a place in the last eight. “Madrid haven’t played at Anfield and they won’t be ready for the atmosphere,” said the former Reds striker Ian Rush. “They’ll say they know about it but look at Juventus in 2005. They said they were expecting it, but were blown away in the firsthalf. Chelsea were 1-0 down before they knew it that year too. “When the players walk out onto the Anfield pitch in the Champions League it’s a completely different atmosphere to anything you’ll find anywhere else, and that could be the difference for us.” In recent years it has been Liverpool, rather than Real, who have been performing like aristocrats of the European game.

Ranieri dreaming of Blues’ revenge

Yang gets richer, a place in Masters

Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri will be looking to get one over on his former employers when the Italian giants face Chelsea in the Champions League in Turin tonight for a place in the quarter-finals. Juve need to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the second round, first leg at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago and Ranieri would like nothing more than to eliminate the team that sacked him. >PAGE 25

Yang Yong-eun held on to win the Honda Classic on Sunday to claim his first USPGA Tour triumph and book a place in the Masters. Yang two-putted from 50 feet for par at the par-five 18th to seal the one-shot victory over American John Rollins. “This win is the biggest win of my career,” said the beaming South Korean. “It definitely overtakes the HSBC Champions win in 2006.” >PAGE 27
