angkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra had the help of some megawatt smiles at Suan Saranrom park yesterday morning, where he was asking us to turn off the lights for Earth Hour on March 28. Singer Kavi “Beam D2B” Tangjararak, Miss Universe 2005 Natalie (Glebova) Srichaphan and actor Pattarapol “Paul” Silapajarn joined him to persuade us to flick switches between 8 and 9pm as part of the antiglobal warming campaign that will cover 1,181 cities around the world. Look out for the parades promoting the campaign, to be held on Silom Road on March 18, Rama I Road on March 21 and Khao San Road on March 25. Sukhumbhand said that dimming the dazzle had big benefits, citing last year’s campaign which saved 1,384 megawatts of electricity, reducing the amount of CO2 belched out by power stations by 364 tons.

PLEASURE CENTRAL? Centrepoint is back, but will its new venue and attractions repeat the smash teen success of yesteryear? D A I LY X P R E S S
A
fter almost two years’ absence, Centrepoint – one of Bangkok’s liveliest venues for the young – has been reborn on the 7th and 8th floors of CentralWorld thanks to an injection of Bt100 million. The 10,000-square-metre venue devoted to shops, a dance school and cyber-game areas is targeted as a “teensetter venue”, say its operators, Infinity Mall. Before being taken over by whisky tycoon Charoen Siriwadhanabhakdi, who replaced it with a six-storey commercial building on the old premises, Centrepoint@Siam Square was Thailand’s version of Japan’s famed Shibuya entertainment district. The new Centrepoint-
@CentralWorld launched with a fanfare yesterday, but also an acknowledgement that the new location – indoors and above ground – was the key challenge in making it a success.
5,000 roaming teens CEO of Infinity Mall Pornarit Chounchaiyasit said yesterday that he expected to see 5,000 teens roaming the 10,000sqm each day. Scheduling the opening for the school summer break makes that prediction more likely to come true. Apart from the magnet of a vibrant retail scene, Centrepoint has a budget of Bt500,000 a month for daily events that should boost the number of visitors.
Rents will probably have to be lowered to entice businesses to take space in these tough times. So far, 30 per cent of the space is still vacant. Teens will adopt a wait-andsee attitude, but most will be eager to check it out. “I think the air-conditioned space is good as it’s cooler than having it in the open air. But the open-air venue was more visible so more people knew about it,” said 14-year-old Ririn Wongvaravipa. Patcharida Benjaluksanaporn, 14, said the idea of taking the lift puts her off. “But I’m sure that the place will build a following of regular fans,” she told Daily Xpress. Krittaphol Achineethongkham, 15, said that he wanted to see whether the activities on offer were good enough to make it worth travelling all the way from home.
esearchers have found 304 Thai children classified as geniuses – people with exceptional intellectual or creative power – in the past four years through a project working on development of genius children, a Bangkok seminar was told yesterday. Seeking out the gifted children to help in their development were two organisations: the Institute for Gifted and Innovative Learning (IGIL) and the Office of Knowledge Management and Development (OKMD), which have set up 42 Gifted and Talented Exploring centres (GTX) in 21 provinces.
89,000 kids tested The joint IGIL-OKMD project tested more than 89,000 children in the past four years, selecting 3,647 of them in a preliminary round before choosing the 304 finalists. No details have been released about the final 304 on their sex, age and education levels. However, the criteria to select genius children involved eight subjects or areas: mathematics, science, language and literature, arts, music, sports, sociology and creativity. OKMD chairman Narongchai Akkharaseni says most nations are seeking their genius children to develop them as efficient members of the workforce. There will be another 19 GTX genius-seeking outlets opened in 19 provinces this year, said IGIL.

Witnesses said they saw the alleged gunman leave the scene in a red pickup truck. Soon afterward, police responded to an emergency call reporting more shots fired at a house that had been set ablaze three miles away. When police arrived at the scene, they found the alleged killer’s body. Police said they were investigating whether the rampage was related to a dispute between the alleged gunman and his wife, who had left him. – AFP

Incest trial opens of Austrian who held daughter in cellar The trial of Josef Fritzl, the Austrian who admitted having seven children with his daughter while holding her captive for 24 years, opened yesterday. Fritzl went before a court in the Lower Austrian provincial capital of St Poelten on charges of murder, rape, incarceration, grievous assault and slavery. The accused, a 73-year-old engineer,
built a secret basement chamber to hold his children. The murder charge stems from the death of a newborn baby in 1996. Frtizl entered the courtroom holding a ring-binder to conceal his face. The media and public were allowed in the courtroom while the charges were read, but the rest of the proceedings are being conducted behind closed
doors, to protect the victims’ identities. Fritzl is expected to plead guilty to the charges of rape, incest, sequestration and grievous assault for holding his daughter Elisabeth captive in a cellar for almost a quarter of a century and fathering seven children with her. If found guilty, he faces up to 15 years in prison.
However, his lawyer said he will contest the murder charge, which carries a life sentence, for failing to seek medical aid for a newborn who died. Fritzl says the baby was still-born and he burnt the body in a wood-fired boiler in the cellar. Fritzl also rejects a charge of slavery for treating Elisabeth as “property”. AGENCIES

XTRA PRIZE PLACES >> The Season Awards winners will be announced at Town In Town Hotel on Srivara road at 6 tonight. >> The awards were launched in 1987 by Season magazine, with the winners coming to the publication’s office to receive their prizes in 1988. >> The 1989 awards ceremony was held at Ana House restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 27. >> In 1990, the event moved to Rong Phak restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 23. >> In 1991, the awards ceremony was held at the Jade Pavilion Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 22.
he nominations for this year’s Season Awards have been announced and, leading with seven nods out of the 13 categories, is producer and guitarist Chatree “Ohm” Kongsuwan, a 20-year veteran of the music scene who returned to the spotlight last year with his debut solo album “Into the Light”. Next up, with nominations in four categories, is alternative musician Krichyos Lertprapai, aka The Must. Chatree, who’s also worked as music director on the reality-TV talent show “Academy Fantasia”, is up for Best Male Artist, Rock Artist, Album, Rock Album, Song, Recording and Instrumental. The Must is nominated for Male Artist, Rock Artist, Rock Album and Rock Track. Punters are predicting that he’ll pip Chatree to the post in the rock categories, doing as well as last year’s winner Bodyslam.
Also with four nominations are Moderndog and Slot Machine, who’ll be battling it out for Best Duo and Group Artist, Album, Song and Recording. Other nominees are Wiriyapa “Nui” Chansuwong, Silents Scream, Clash, Silly Fools and Crescendo.
Competitive categories The race is likely to be closest in the Best Female Artist category with Nui Wiriyapa, Thanaporn “Parn” Wakprayoon, Thanida “Da” Thamwimol, Wichayanee “Gam” Piaklin and Kanyarat “Lula” Tiyapornchai vying for the coveted prize. Keyboardist Jakrawal Saothong-yutitham is the favourite to win Best Instrumental with a double nomination for his numbers “Funk Control” and “Cubop”, both cuts from his album, “Colours of My Life”. And, in a sign perhaps that rock is healthier than rap in this part of the world, the award for hip-hop music has this year been replaced by Best Rock Artist. Moderndog is among the leading nominees, up for four awards for Best Duo and Group, Album, Song and Recording.

an Thailand jump past faltering China as the world’s toymaker? With almost every other retail sector suffering financially, sales of toys are up 21 per cent, says Jirabool Vittayasing, president of the Thai Gifts, Premiums and Decorations Association. “The growth was due to the decline in products made in China,” he says on the eve of BIG Design Week 2009. Europe imports more Thai-made lifestyle products than anywhere else, Jirabool says, headed by Britain, France, Germany and Italy. Designing items for foreign markets has become more complicated, however, Jirabool says. There’s much more involved than just production. Thai furniture and decor will only survive if the designs have a more “international” appeal. They have to be imaginative and of top quality, he says. Thai Housewares Association

skin deep No more hollow cheeks I’m 40 years old and my face seems to have lost its natural fat, making me look tired and old. What can I do to add volume to my face? As we age, our skin loses volume and elasticity. Recent studies suggest that one of the first signs of ageing is loss of skin volume in the mid-face and not sagging of the skin. Filler injections are a safe way of restoring a youthful shape to the face, and certainly far less expensive than plastic surgery. The “fill” is made from a unique form of hyaluronic acid, a substance that binds water in the skin to restore fullness. The therapy takes less than an hour without downtime and the injection fills in hollow cheeks by adding volume, replenishing that fresh appearance. The result lasts six to 12 months and, as because it’s temporary, allows you the option to re-evaluate as and when you wish.

Versace gets the vote Barack and Michelle inspire the spring-summer line By Windy D A I LY X P R E S S
N
ot unlike her husband the Prez, Michelle Obama is shining a ray of hope through the economic gloom, at least
in fashion terms. Her fresh colours and a famous onestrap dress are among the highlights in the Versace spring-summer collection now on sale in Bangkok.
Donatella Versace – who once earned headlines urging Hillary Clinton to ditch her customary pantsuits – has shifted her attention to the current occupants of the White House. Barack Obama, she believes, could occasionally do without the neckties and “jazz up the shirt”. Versace’s new mantra is “formal attitude, informal mindset”, so collars and ties are gone, guys. You’ll need narrow silk scarves
instead. Evening shirts have pleated double-bib fronts or come in summery pastels. Suit jackets have double lapels or none at all, and are matched with slim, shiny trousers. The trousers can be cut narrow or wide in the leg, ending in feet tucked into elegant sandals with leather laces. Too casual? Luxury still gets a look in with stripes and checks created using the latest technology to form posh new patterns. Nanotechnology puts men in a techno taffeta that resembles washed silk. It’s actually a type of nylon, modified in the molecules. Versace clothes are now more wearable than ever thanks to light and comfortable fabrics – and science.

s skinny as a size-zero model yet elegant thanks to a red trim etched on its black frame, the Samsung Series 8 Slim Full HD LCD TV is a must-have accessory for any living room. We tested the 46-inch model of the TV and were very impressed with the display quality, especially with the reproduction of DVD movies. The Series 8 has a high dynamic contrast ratio of 70000:1, so the black signal was really a deep shade of black. We played DVD movies using the Microsoft Xbox 360, which
upscaled the signal to 1080p. The Xbox 360 games also looked beautiful, though that didn’t make them any easier to win. And when we adjusted parts of the game’s display to black and turned off the lights, the black part of the screen disappeared completely. The Series 8 TV comes with several useful features and can be connected to your home computer network using a LAN cable. We used the provided CD software and displayed lots of photo files and digital videos from our computer using the hard disk to monitor what we were showing. The Content Library features a
great selection of recipes, fitness information, image gallery and background music as well as entertaining animated stories to teach English to kids. More content can be downloaded from Samsung website. Best of all is the InfoLive feature. Connect the TV to the Internet through a Home network router and you can access realtime updated information and media services like the news, weather and finance information. By Eugenia Last
Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.
Today’s Birthday: You’ve got the stamina to take on monumental tasks, surprising people who know you and attracting people who don’t. You can make some critical changes regarding your friendships and allies. In the end, loyalty will count. Love is in the stars but be careful not to fall for someone who is too demanding. ARIES ***** March 21-April 19 Make some of the alterations in your life that you feel will help you obtain greater security and financial gains. Discipline plus a little pushiness and dedication will help you get to the top. TAURUS *** April 20-May 20 Too much, too soon and too fast will be your downfall. Keep things small, to yourself and, above all, cost efficient. Your success will come from working slowly and consistently.
DIFFICULTY RATING ★★
GEMINI *** May 21-June 20 Don’t let the competition scare you into thinking you aren’t up for something you really want to do. Refuse to let your emotions take over, causing uncertainty. Not everyone or everything will please you but you will be given enough to work with. Once you’ve given everyone instructions, you should be able to move on to more important matters. VIRGO ** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 You’ll have trouble controlling emotional matters. Don’t give up but don’t get sucked into someone else’s dilemma. Make some changes at home. Versatility will be your saving grace.

It’s time to satisfy your own needs instead of letting someone making you feel guilty. SAGITTARIUS *** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 Jealousy will not get you very far. Exaggerating a point will put you in a tight spot. Think before you make a promise. An emotional response to a romantic situation will help smooth things over.

Injured Deco faces season’s end
Forgotten striker Bojan Krkic scored his first league goals of the season as Barcelona restored their six-point advantage over Real Madrid at the top of the Spanish first division with a 2-0 win at Almeria on Sunday. Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid came from two goals down to defeat 10-man Villarreal 3-2 at the Vicente Calderon to pull themselves back into the Champions League race. Goals from Diego Forlan and Antonio Lopez in the final ten minutes secured a crucial win for Atletico. – AFP
Portuguese international Deco could miss the rest of the season after Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink revealed that the midfielder had suffered a recurrence of a hamstring problem in the 10 win over Manchester City. “He was fit and worked hard, but after 20 or 25 minutes he had this problem again, so he will be out again for a while,” said Hiddink. “I think Deco will not be recovered very shortly. He’ll have to be very fit to come back this season. I have my doubts to be honest, but let’s see Deco what happens.” – AFP
Hamburg keep pressure on Hertha Hamburg put themselves back in the Bundesliga title race on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Energie Cottbus to join the three-strong pack chasing leaders Hertha Berlin. Two goals in seven first-half minutes from Croatia striker Ivica Olic and a free-kick by Germany winger Piotr Trochowski mean Hamburg finish the weekend fourth, but level on 45 points with second-placed Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg with Hertha on 49 points. “That was a hard-earned win, it wasn’t pretty, but it was important for us,” said Hamburg coach Martin Jol. – AFP

G Fallen English star Gascoigne speaks of wife-beating, suicide bids and rehab DPA, Sunderland, England
F
ormer England star Paul Gascoigne has opened up on a life of addiction and violence in an interview on Sky TV yesterday. In a startlingly frank performance, Gascoigne admitted that his heart stopped three times during rehab for alcohol addiction, explained the circumstances behind his violence to his ex-wife, and spoke of feeling “used” by his son Regan. Gascoigne was an outstanding midfielder who came to global prominence during the 1990 World Cup, when he followed a string of sensational performances by weeping in the semi-final against West Germany after being shown a yellow card that would have kept him out of the final had England not lost the subsequent penalty shoot-out. But there was always a selfdestructive side to his character, and a career that took him from Newcastle United and
Tottenham Hotspur to Italy’s Lazio was littered with bar brawls, fitness problems, injuries and moments of wildness.
I threw my wife to the floor The public was largely supportive, until the allegations that he had beaten his ex-wife Sheryl. “If you are sitting in a restaurant and somebody calls your mam a whore, which she did, and for no reason, I don’t like that and yes, I got a hold of her arms and I did put my head against her head,” Gascoigne explained. “I didn’t head-butt her but I threw her to the floor and yes I was disgusted with myself for what I did. “I went to therapy; I sat with 15-20 women and told them exactly what I did ... I got hammered but I went through this course and it is the one thing I ever did in my life and that was it and I get hammered for it.”
Kids scared of him His relationship with his son Regan was also difficult. “I drove down to be with my son, and he takes us [“us” is used for “me” in northeastern dialect] to the school and shows them – this is my dad,” he said. “And I went to assembly and then I signed everything for the kids, and then see, that proved to everyone that I am his dad, and then he goes back home and that leaves me, I don’t know, I feel like I am being used by my own son here.” He admitted that during the worst of his alcoholism his children were “scared” of him, but the programme also showed him enjoying a kickabout on the beach with them.
30 cans of lager a day The 41-year-old also acknowledged that at one point he was drinking 30 cans of strong lager every day. “I can be around it now because all I have got to do is remember my last drink,”

TOTTENHAM MANAGER
“I’m bitterly disappointed. It’s still possible for us to finish fourth, though recent form doesn’t suggest so. The players have done terrifically well, and now they have to try and get over these disappointments. They have got to go on and fight to the end and I think we are capable of doing that.”
“Nobody can predict how this league is going to turn out. But I still think Arsenal will get that fourth spot. Some Spurs fans were saying to me they wanted us to lose at Villa because if we won we would help Arsenal – I’ve never heard anything like it.”

Gascoigne said. “If I remember my last drink, which I can’t, well I sort of can, getting fed with a spoon because I had the shakes that bad. “My heart failed on us a few times.”
Sleeping tablets He also spoke of his attempts
to end his own life. “In the bath yes, it’s the easy way out they say, you know, take a few sleeping tablets, nice little warm bath and have a few drinks and just drop. I had just had enough, I had had enough of everything. “I rang my sister just to say, I am going to run a bath. I think she might have had a clue, I don’t know if it was a plea for help but I did have enough anyway so I wasn’t bothered. “And I just said, look I am in the bath and I will always love you, or something like that, and put the phone down, and I run the bath and I lay in the bath and just felt myself dropping off and I remember just getting ready, like dozing off you know and then the police burst in. “About six police dragged us out of the bath.” Gascoigne said his belief in God helped him in his attempt to stop drinking. “I just thank Him for today you know, if I don’t drink I just say thanks, thanks for not letting me have a drink today.”

anai Udomchoke and Kittipong Wachiramanowong gained sweet revenge over their Davis Cup loss to Australia by eliminating the two protagonists, Chris Guccione and Brydan Klein, from the US$50,000 SAT Bangkok Open Challenger yesterday. Thai No 1 Danai survived a barrage of huge serves from fourth seed Guccione before finally prevailing in three sets 5-7 6-4 6-2 while Kittipong exploited a string of unforced errors to pick off the injured Klein 6-4 6-3 at the Rama Gardens Hotel Sport Complex. A fortnight ago, the two Australians along with former world No 1 Lleyton Hewitt handed the two Thais a 3-2 defeat in their Davis Cup Zone Asia/Oceania Group I tie in Muang Thong Thani. “He was serving incredibly and returning well in the first set. After I got a break in the ninth game of the second set, I felt more confident and was able to read his serves. It was easier from then on,’’ said Danai who accounted for Thailand’s two points in the Davis Cup with wins over Klein and Lleyton Hewitt. Danai, who is in search of his first Challenger title at home, will have a tough task in the second round where
he will meet junior world No 2 Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, a 6-0 6-3 winner over Peerakit Siributwong. “I used to warm up with him. He has good groundstrokes which remind me of Federer. If he gains consistency, he will make the top 10,’’ said Danai. Kittipong’s upset win against world No 188 Klein was also his biggest career win – his first victory in a Challenger event. “I wasn’t sure I was going to beat him because he played so well in Australia [in February]. But he went for winners and missed so many. He was limping later in the match but I wasn’t so sure if he was really injured as he was still chasing the ball well,’’ said Kittipong who will take on a former top 40 player, Florian Mayer, who upset seventh seed Daniel Brands 6-1 6-3 in an allGerman encounter. “He just came back from injury. He is very solid from the baseline,’’ added the 19-year-old Thai. Elsewhere, American Tim Smyczek downed countryman Alex Kuznetsov 2-6 6-1 6-2, Indian Rohan Bopanna ousted Taiwanese Ti Chen 62 6-1, Noam Okun of Israel came back from a set down to beat Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania 5-7 6-3 6-4 and Im Kyu-tae of South Korea toppled American Raven Klaasen 6-4 6-3.

or much of this Six Nations, England manager Martin Johnson has worn a grimace, frustrated by his side’s indiscipline and failure to make the most of their chances. But there was no hiding his elation after a 34-10 victory over France at Twickenham on Sunday. England, making the most of France turnovers, showed the kind of cutting edge so badly lacking in their successive defeats by Wales and Ireland. They did that without adding to a costly tally of 10 yellow cards in their previous four matches. “When we do what we did today we look like a good team,” said Johnson. “That was great. “I don’t think our intensity level was higher. Our precision level was better – the guys saw opportunities and took them. “I am very happy for the guys and there’s a good feeling of satisfaction in the changing room.” This was only England’s third win in eight matches under Johnson. “When you lose you are going to get criticised and defeat is a very realistic possibility when you are playing France,” he said.

o longer the best player without a World Golf Championship, Phil Mickelson won a spirited duel at Doral on Sunday to win the CA Championship and put himself in position to reach No 1 in the world. Mickelson, taken to a hospital on the eve of the final round with heat exhaustion and dehydration, survived seven lead changes in 11 holes against Nick Watney before hanging on with seven pars for a 3-under 69 and a one-shot victory. Mickelson won for the second time in three starts and moved to No 2 in the world ranking, as close to Tiger Woods as he has ever been. Depending on how Woods fares at Bay Hill, Mickelson might have a chance to go to No 1 when he plays again.

Mickelson wins Doral in duel with Watney
Winning this tournament was all that mattered. Mickelson finished at 19-under 269 and earned US$1.4 million, the biggest cheque of his career. Four years ago, Mickelson lost a two-shot lead against Woods in a duel that ranks among the best ever at Doral. He didn’t get his revenge against the world’s No 1 player, but Watney gave him all he could handle. “It took a lot out of me,” said Mickelson, who sipped on energy drinks throughout the round. “I haven’t eaten much in three days. I fought hard. I’ve been playing some of my best golf, and I’m very excited to have finished it off.” Watney closed with a 2-under 70, holing an unlikely chip for birdie from behind the ninth green, then making an eagle on the 10th to pull into a tie for the lead. Needing a birdie on the 18th hole, which yielded only three in the final round, Watney thought his 30-footer was good

He pulled his cap over his face, and could only watch as Mickelson took two putts from 25 feet away for par and the victory. “I’ll get over this,” Watney said. “It’s a positive week. I played really well. Beat 78 of the best players in the world. Beat Tiger, which is always good. I’m
very pleased with the way I’m playing.”

eev Milkha Singh’s dream of becoming the first Indian to win a World Golf Championships event was dashed when he finished fourth at the CA Championship on Sunday. Singh started the final round four strokes behind leaders Phil Mickelson and Nick Watney at Doral’s Blue Monster, but his challenge never really left the launch pad. Not that he played badly, but a two-under-par 70 was not nearly enough as he finished at 14-under 274, five strokes behind winner Mickelson. “I could have done better but I’m happy with my performance today,” said Singh, who has won three times on the European Tour and nine other international tournaments, but none in the US. “Those boys up front were superb and were way past us after nine holes.” “I made too many errant shots to contend, but that is part of the game,” he said.

hailand Premier League outfit Chon Buri are hoping to make it two wins out of two when they visit Malaysia’s Kedah in their AFC Cup’s Group G match today. The Thai side, coached by former national striker Kiatisak “Zico” Senamuang, goes into the game as group leaders after recording a comfortable 4-1 victory over unfancied Eastern Athletic of Hong Kong in the opening match last week, while the Malaysians suffered a 3-1 loss to Vietnam’s Hanoi ACB. I believe they will be ready, come match day.” Kiatisak once plied his trade in Malaysia and is convinced that the experience will come in

ilippo Inzaghi racked up 300 career goals as the veteran striker bagged a brace in AC Milan’s 5-1 stroll at Siena on Sunday that boosted their quest to secure third place in Serie A. Inter Milan maintained their seven-point lead over Juventus at the top as they defeated Fiorentina 2-0 at the San Siro thanks to two goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But in the picturesque city of Siena it was Inzaghi’s day as the 35-year-old took his tally to five goals in his last two matches. It also took him to fourth on the all-time list of top Italian goalscorers, headed by Silvio Piola with 364 goals from a 25-year career from 1929 to 1954. “Today I’m celebrating an achievement that fills me full of pride,” said Inzaghi. “Destiny is an incredible thing because my first goal was for Leffe and I also scored it away to Siena and today I’ve reached this 300 milestone again against Siena.”
