A Health Promotion official drinking orange juice holds a sign saying ‘Giving alcohol as a gift is like cursing someone to death’ yesterday to promote the Alcohol Beverage Control Act 2008. Representatives of restaurants and shops attended a seminar about the law, which will restrict the sale of alcohol over Songkran to between the hours of 6 and 12pm.

Beer-wildered Confusion reigns over whether alcohol will be sold during Songkran; legal advice sought for ban By Pongphon Sarnsamak D A I LY X P R E S S

ith the Songkran Festival just a few weeks away, people are still clueless as to whether revellers will be able to buy alcohol anywhere, anytime during the celebration. The National Committee on Alcohol Policy has yet to issue any clear-cut resolution. In a bid to reduce road casualties during the festival, Deputy Public Health Minister Manit Nopamornbodi has proposed that sale of alcohol be banned everywhere between April 12 and 14. A softer alternative, he suggests, would be to exempt hotels, pubs and restaurants from the ban from 6pm to midnight on those days.

All over the country the owners of establishments are anxious to hear what will happen. “The all-day ban will hurt our industry,” says Pawarawan Kulmongkol of the Thai Restaurant Association. At the very least, pubs, hotels and restaurants should be allowed to serve alcohol from 6pm to midnight during the festival, she adds.

Goodbye tourists Director of the Thai Hotels Association Sakkarin Chorsawai expresses concern that the ban will discourage foreigners from visiting Thailand. “Tourists will switch to neighbouring countries where people celebrate festivals that are just like Songkran,” Sakkarin says.

The Senate committee on tourism agrees the ban is a bad idea. “In the current economic climate, we believe the government should not stop alcohol sales,” says committee chairwoman Tunyaratt Achariyachai. She also points out that the ban would not necessarily reduce road casualties because it did not mean people would not drink. The National Committee on Alcohol Policy is now set to ask the Council of State to rule whether the government can legally impose a ban on the sale of alcohol during a specific period like Songkran. “If the government has a legal mandate to do so, we will ban alcohol sales on April 13,” says the committee’s chairman, Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart.

Bangkok fireman in a Spiderman costume saved an 11-year-old autistic boy from falling from a four-storey building at Srinakharinwirot University yesterday. Klong Toei Fire Station officials rushed to the scene with an air cushion after being alerted that teachers at the special needs centre were trying to talk down a crying pupil from a third-floor balcony. The boy’s mother arrived an hour later and suggested that her son would listen to a superhero character. Fireman Somchai Yoosabai changed into a Spiderman costume that’s normally used to entertain kids during fire drills. The sight of his hero holding a glass of juice for him brought a big smile to the boy’s face and he rushed to embrace Spidey. A teacher who asked not to be named said this had been the boy’s first day in class. He suddenly began crying for his mother and then ran out onto the balcony.

The researchers used responses from 3,972 males in the survey with cognitive scores registered in their Swedish military conscription records three years later. “We found a clear link between frequent fish consumption and higher scores when the teenagers ate fish at least once a week,” said Professor Kjell Toren of the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, western Sweden. Many factors considered The researchers said they did not know what mechanism was linked to fish consumption and improved cognitive performance. One theory was the benefits were linked to long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids found in fish. The leading author of the study, Dr Maria Aberg from the Centre for Brain Repair and Rehabilitation at the University of Gothenburg, said the team had considered other factors including ethnicity, where the teenagers lived, what level of education their parents had achieved, how often the teenagers exercised, their well-being and weight. “Having looked very carefully at the wide range of variables explored by this study it was very clear that there was a significant association between regular fish consumption at 15 and improved cognitive performance at 18,” Aberg said.

Australia cracks down on bikers Australian motorcycle gangs faced a major crackdown yesterday amid outrage over a brawl at Sydney airport in which a man was beaten to death in front of horrified passengers. The strength of a special anti-gang police squad would be more than doubled to 125 officers and new legislation to outlaw biker gangs would be considered, the New South Wales state government said. “We are responding swiftly to these brazen acts,” said Premier Nathan Rees, declaring that he was “sickened and appalled” by the killing on Sunday. A 29-year-old man was bludgeoned to death with metal crowd control bollards as about 20 gang members brawled in the check-in area, sending passengers fleeing in terror. Police Commissioner Mick Keelty said the incident did not mean that security at the airport’s domestic terminal was weak. The airport had its full complement of police officers on duty and there had been no intelligence suggesting the upcoming brawl, he said. “The police can’t be everywhere all the time and this is an event that could have happened anywhere in Australia,” Keelty said. The fight followed a spate of drive-by shootings in Sydney during which homes were sprayed with gunfire and is believed to have involved a move to intercept bikers arriving from out of the state. – A F P

High-kicking Chinese Marxists are set to bring communism’s most famous tract to life – as a musical. An all-singing, all-dancing stage version of Das Kapital is being produced in Shanghai to show how the thinking of Karl Marx is as relevant in today’s economic crisis as when his book was published in 1867. “The entertainment and theatrical elements will help ordinary people better understand why the financial crisis is happening,” said Zhang Jun, a Fudan University economics professor, who is an adviser on the production. Zhang said his role is to ensure Marx’s ideas are accurately represented in the stage spectacular. – AFP

As a bartender and trainer at a national restaurant chain, Rebecca Brown earned a couple of thousand dollars in a really good week. Now, as a dancer at Chicago’s Pink Monkey gentleman’s club, she makes almost that much in one good night. The tough job market is prompting a growing number of women across the country to dance in strip clubs, appear in adult movies or pose for adult magazines like Hustler. Employers across the adult entertainment industry say they’re seeing an influx of applications from women who, like Brown, are attracted by the promise of flexible schedules and fast cash. Many have college degrees and held white-collar jobs until the economy soured. “You’re seeing a lot more beautiful women who are eligible to do so many other things,” said Gus Poulos, general manager of New York City’s Sin City gentleman’s club. He said he got 85 responses in just one day to a recent job posting on Craigslist. The transition to the nightclub scene isn’t always a smooth one – from learning to dance in 5-inch heels to dealing with the jeers of some customers. Some performers said they were initially so nervous that only alcohol could calm their nerves. Eva Stone, a 25-year-old dancer at the Pink Monkey, said dealing with occasional verbal abuse from patrons requires “a thick skin”. Makers of adult films cautioned that women shouldn’t rush into the decision to make adult movies without considering the effect on their lives.

SPECTOR RETRIAL IN FINAL STAGE Prosecutors are trying to convince jurors that music producer killed actress Clarkson at home A P , Los Angeles

S

ix years after actress Lana Clarkson died of a gunshot wound at Phil Spector’s hilltop mansion, lawyers will once again deliver final arguments to a jury in the legendary music producer’s murder trial. The question hanging over these proceedings is whether this jury, unlike the one at Spector’s first trial 18 months ago, will be able to reach a unanimous verdict. The first panel deadlocked 10-2 in favor of conviction. As closing arguments in

Spector’s retrial began yesterday, prosecutors were attempting to convince jurors that the 69-year-old music producer fired the fatal shot as Clarkson tried to leave his home.

Defence: She shot herself The defence will argue that Clarkson, a down-on-herluck actress approaching middle age, put the gun in her mouth and pulled the trigger. A change from circumstances presented to the first jury is a ruling on Friday by Superior Court judge Larry

Paul Fidler that provides an option to convict Spector of a lesser charge. Fidler instructed jurors that involuntary manslaughter charges could be considered. If Spector, who became famous for creating rock music’s lush “wall of sound”, is convicted of that charge, he could be sentenced to as little as two to four years in prison. Prosecutors did not charge Spector with involuntary manslaughter, and district attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said they would still argue that he is guilty of second-degree murder, a conviction with a prison sentence of 15 years to life.

Vietnamese man and his wife were arrested in Ho Chi Minh City for running an illegal marriage brokerage for South Korean men looking for Vietnamese brides. Pham Van Thang and his wife Truong Thi Thuy Diem were arrested when police raided a house where they found more than 60 young women on Friday, the Vietnam News reported yesterday. It said the police were looking for three South Korean men who had already left the house with their chosen brides. Thang and his wife gave three million dong (Bt6,200) to the families of young women selected by the South Koreans, who paid between US$5,000 and $6,000 for a wife, the newspaper said. In recent years, the number of illegal marriage brokers has increased, drawing mostly on young women from Vietnam’s poor southern Mekong delta. The communist government said in January that Vietnam plans to set up an overseas marriage brokerage to regulate the sector, which is now run by illegal matchmakers accused of humiliating women and fuelling abuse. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem ordered agencies to submit plans for Vietnam’s first accredited international matchmaking service in Ho Chi Minh City by June.

LIFE AND STUFF Scenario just seems to be filling time with its choppy, ill-prepared ‘Soul Mates’ By Pawit Mahasarinand S P E C I A L T O D A I LY XPRESS

S

cenario’s new play is “Nueakhu Sib Ed Chak: Chak Wan Raek Thueng Wan La”, which means “Soul Mates in 11 Scenes: From the First to the Last Days”, and the central theme seems to be anything can happen in life, for no particular reason. From this derive several messages, including, “No matter how old you are, use a condom.” Another goes like this: Since you didn’t fulfil your childhood dream of becoming a flight attendant, go ahead and smoke as much as you want – as long as your kid isn’t around. Then, after you beat cancer, your soul mate will take you around the world, even though you’re divorced. But he’ll end up

dying first – in a road accident. Yes, anything can happen in life, so enjoy every second of it, starting by taking a loved one to see this play, which is quite safe compared to life.

Scratches the surface “Nueakhu” encompasses 35 years in the lives of the two main characters, but it still doesn’t reveal enough of their backgrounds. We discover what they do and have done, but rarely why. There are also too many clichés, and some slips in the research. And while stage plays tend to minimise the number of actors these days, this one has a crowd. It sometimes looks like a university production with roles dished out to every freshman wannabe star.

Songsit Rungnoppakhunsri and Sinjai Plengpanich, two of the country’s best professional actors, save the heavily flawed script to a certain extent. It’s odd, though, watching them age realistically while their comical friends, played by Tee Doksadao and Pawanrat Naksuriya, do not. After the show last Friday (the 13th), some people were saying they preferred Scenario’s musicals. Fair enough: Even with flaws in the script, you get to some catchy pop and dazzling lights, and for only Bt1,000 more. “Nueakhu” comes across as a quick money-earner when nothing else is scheduled at the theatre ahead of “Mae Nak the Musical”. >> ON THE WEB Read the full version of this review at Blog.NationMultimedia.com/Dance andTheatre.

Japanese batter US to reach b’ball final Defending champion Japan humbled the United States team of Major League Baseball stars 9-4 yesterday to book an all-Asian showdown with South Korea for the World Baseball Classic title. Daisuke Matsuzaka dazzled US batters, frustrating the multi-millionaire line-up to snap a four-game streak against the Americans and advance to a fifth game against South Korea in this Classic in today’s final at Dodger Stadium. “It will be the game of the century and we certainly want to do our best,” Japan manager Tatsunori Hara said. A total of 32 men’s teams and 3 women’s teams from some 13 countries around the world including Australia, Bangladesh, England and New Zealand will compete in the tournament. Woods under threat from Mickelson Phil Mickelson is poised to unseat Tiger Woods as the world’s top-ranking golfer for the first time in his career. Neither was in action last week, but the gap between the two has dwindled to a mere 0.2 points due mainly to Woods eight-month layoff for knee surgery, but also to Mickelson’s own form so far this year. This week Woods continues his Masters prepa- Mickelson ration by playing in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Bay Hill. If he fails to finish in the top two Mickelson, not in action again, would then have a chance to topple him at next week’s Houston Open. – AFP

Heitinga ‘out of danger’ after injury Atletico Madrid’s defender John Heitinga was “out of danger” yesterday after suffering a head injury during a league fixture against Real Mallorca. The 25-year-old is “conscious, out of danger and in good general condition,” said the club.

Gerrard warns Man United the pressure is on; manager Benitez says no slip-ups AFP, Liverpool, England

S

teven Gerrard has warned Manchester United that Liverpool will take full advantage of any more slips from Sir Alex Ferguson’s Premier League leaders. Liverpool moved to within one point of United, who still have a game in hand, with a thumping 5-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield on Sunday. Following Rafael Benitez’s side’s 4-1 win at Old Trafford last weekend, United lost 2-0 at Fulham on Saturday and Liverpool’s fine recent form has seen them move to within touching distance of Ferguson’s team. Liverpool now have just eight

matches left but Gerrard has promised United that the Reds are just waiting for a chance to seize control of the title race. He said: “It’s important that we don’t get carried away because Manchester United are capable of winning all their remaining games. “We’ve got to focus on what we’re doing, keep winning and keep on their shoulders and keep piling that pressure on them so that they’re going into games knowing that we’re ready to pounce on any mistakes that they make. “When you win, it’s good to win convincingly and everyone knows we’re on a rich vein of form and confidence is high here but we’re just taking each

game as it comes.” Benitez has told his players that they have to treat every remaining league game like a cup final if they are to catch United. But the Spaniard insists that the key to coming out on top is not wondering about United’s results. He said: “We need to do our job and wait for United to make mistakes. Now we are much closer but they are still in much better position but we have to keep going and pushing them. “We are closer. They will see that we are working hard to win every game so my message is that every game is really important and like a cup final for us.” Having struggled for goals at times this season, the Reds have now scored 13 goals in three matches against Real Madrid, United and Villa. And Benitez believes that

ON HIS RETURN TO REAL MADRID

SAYS INTER WILL SURVIVE WITHOUT IBRA

“The reception I got was incredible and I want to thank all the people for not forgetting what I did for this great club. It was great to come back to Madrid which was my home for 13 years [he also played for Atletico Madrid] with seven of those at the Santiago Bernabeu ... I will never forget this day.”

“Ibrahimovic is a great player but no player is bigger than a club. He has become very important to Inter but certain clubs are bigger than any player or coach. We have two or three youngsters with great potential who in two or three years will be great players.”

confidence is flowing through his side as the season reaches a climax. He added: “Against Real Madrid we scored first and we

did that again against Aston Villa. This is perhaps the key because the other team have to come and play more open. “When you are playing well, the players are playing with more confidence. Without changing players, with one game a week, [Fernando] Torres is fit, [Steven] Gerrard is fit, [Fabio] Aurelio is fit and it is easier for them to play one game a week. “We can keep this momentum, but we have this international break. After that, we hope we can play with same mentality and keep doing well.” Aston Villa remain three points adrift of fourth placed Arsenal and their manager Martin O’Neill admits that it will be difficult for them to return to the top four. He said: “Winning football games in this Premier League is exceptionally hard and our form has dipped.”

Ibrahimovic dazzles Zlatan Ibrahimovic starred as Inter Milan cruised to a 30 victory over rock-bottom Reggina at the San Siro to reestablish their seven-point lead at the top of Serie A on Sunday. Second-placed Juventus had briefly reduced the arrears on Saturday with a highly-impressive 4-1 romp at Roma, but Jose Mourinho’s men showed they were in no mood to concede any ground in the title race. Meanwhile third-placed AC Milan were held to a 0-0 draw at Napoli, who have not won in 11 matches. After his star performance, Ibrahimovic hinted that he may be considering a future away from the San Siro. “I’m totally focused on winning the title but as for next season, we’ll see,” he said. “I’m very happy to be at Inter but next year we’ll see.”

arcelona showed Real Madrid they will take some budging from the top of the table with an emphatic 6-0 home win over Malaga on Sunday to restore their six-point cushion over the champions. A few hours earlier Real had defeated Almeria 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu to cut Barcelona’s lead to three points, but Pep Guardiola’s side responded by cutting poor Malaga to shreds. Xavi, Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto’o were all on target in a sensational first 45 minutes and Malaga couldn’t wait for the half-time whistle. It was more of the same in the second half with Eto’o scoring his second on 56 minutes while marauding right back Dani Alves (51) also netted. “It is one more game gone,” said Eto’o. “I always have a chance of scoring in this team. We just want to push on now and carry on with this form after the international break.” Reports in Spain have linked Eto’o with a move to AC Milan, but Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola insists the striker has yet to make up his mind. “The press have given the impression that Eto’o is already out of Barcelona,” said

fter a slow start Dutch international forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is starting to make a name for himself at Real Madrid and bagged a brace in a 3-0 win over Almeria at the weekend to make it eight goals in six games. Huntelaar was signed by former coach Bernd Schuster from Ajax over the festive period and it has proved a great leaving present for current manager Juande Ramos. ‘The Hunter’ has shown a midas touch in front of goal with some lethal finishing and Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain has subsequently found himself warming the substitutes bench. “I am happy to continue scoring although it is more important that the team wins,” explained Huntelaar. “We have so much quality in this Real team that anyone can score. Today Marcelo and I scored but the next time it could be someone else such is the quality in this side. “Right now, I feel great at Real Madrid. I am a little happier every day for living here and playing at the best club in the world.” Huntelaar is Real’s lucky omen with the team never losng with him in the side, winning 10 and drawing once.

LEVY TOUGH ON THAI Israeli dismisses teen Kittipong; Danai plays today By Lerpong Amsa-ngiam DAILY XPRESS, Nakhon Ratchasima

sraeli Harel Levy defied the scorching heat at His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Sports Complex to eliminate Thai No 2 Kittipong Wachiramanowong from the US$50,000 LTAT-SAT Korat Open yesterday. The 30-year-old Levy, who peaked at world No 30 in 2001, looked weary playing in tough conditions but recovered in the third set to beat the ailing Thai teenager 6-1 1-6 6-0 and advance to the second round for the second straight week. Kittipong, a wildcard entry, felt back pain during morning practice and aggravated the condition at the start of the match. He had treatment on court at 4-1 in the second set but the pain woudn’t go away.

Harel Levy of Israel had to endure hot conditions to win in three sets. “The injury came out of nowhere. It was difficult for me to serve,’’ said the Davis Cup player, who will spend all of April playing in South Korea. In other opening-round action, top seed Andreas Beck of Germany survived a tough match against Prakash Amritraj of India 7-5 7-6 (7-3). Briton Joshua Goodall, who

celebrated the doubles title with Australian Joseph Sirianni last week in Bangkok, advanced to the second round when Colin Ebelthite of Australia retired due to sickness while trailing the Englishman 4-1. Fourth-seeded Mathieu Moncourt of France was extended to three sets by Bjorn Renquist of Sweden before pre-

vailing 4-6 6-3 6-2. Eighth-seed Daniel Brands of Germany fell victim to Italian Paolo Lorenzi who won 6-4 7-5. American Rajeev Ram toppled Edouard Roger Vasselin of France 7-5 6-2. Today, three Thais are in action. Sonchat Ratiwatana will be seeking to prove that his talents are not only limited to doubles as he takes on Australian big-server Chris Guccione at 10am, while Peerakiat Siriluethaiwattana, another wildcard entrant, plays last week’s semi-finalist Im Kyu-tae at 2pm. Danai Udomchoke, a losing finalist last week to German Florian Mayer in Bangkok, takes centre stage in a late-afternoon match against Ukrainian qualifier Denys Molchanov. “I’ve never seen him before but you can’t underestimate a qualifier – two of them made it to the semis last week. I feel better after the final in Bangkok. I’m looking forward to a new week and a new tournament.”

afael Nadal powered his way to a 6-1 6-2 victory over Andy Murray on a windy Sunday at the BNP Paribas Open, winning his second Indian Wells title in three years. The top-ranked Nadal’s low, hard groundstrokes gave him an edge in the gusty conditions over Murray, whose game relies more on pace and a mix of shots. Nadal, a 22-year-old Spaniard, added the championship to the Australian Open title he won earlier this year, and avenged a loss to eventual champion Murray in the Rotterdam final. Vera Zvonareva defeated defending champion Ana Ivanovic 7-6 (5) 6-2 to win the women’s title. Zvonareva a day earlier teamed with Victoria Azarenka to take the women’s doubles. Nadal rode his usual powerful forehands to the lopsided win over Murray, hitting 10 winners from that side to Murray’s one.

Sth African claims the Transitions Championship AP, Palm Harbor, Florida

etief Goosen took an important step towards rejoining the elite in golf on Sunday by closing with a 1-under 70 for a one-shot victory in the Transitions Championship on Sunday, his first PGA Tour win since 2005. Goosen had a two-shot lead with three holes to play on the demanding Copperhead Course at Innisbrook, when just like everyone else, he struggled to hang on. The two-time US Open champion barely made it. Needing only two putts from 25 feet for the win, he watched his first putt roll 5 feet past the hole. He steadied his nerves and curled in the par putt, giving him a one-shot victory over Charles Howell III and Brett Quigley. “It was great to see that putt go in,” Goosen said. “The greens got scary. It was really tough.” Goosen avoided a play-off with Quigley and Howell. Both had a birdie putt in the groups ahead of Goosen to catch him. Both ran it well past the hole and made it coming back.

“You’re in the back of the tub trying to stop it short of the drain,” Quigley said describing the putt they all had. Equally famous in Goosen’s career was a three-putt bogey from 12 feet on the final hole at Southern Hills, which nearly cost him the 2001 US Open until he won it the next day in an 18hole play-off.

“It was disappointing to hit it that far past. I didn’t want to have another US Open there,” Goosen said. “I felt good with my putting, and there wasn’t too much indecision with the one coming back. It was nice to see it go in.” Howell was tied for the lead with four holes to play, but made two straight bogeys and shot a 69 for his best finish since he won at Riviera two years ago. He will have to win at Bay Hill or the Shell Houston Open to avoid missing the Masters for the first time since 2002. “If Retief’s 5-footer lipped out, I wouldn’t have cried,” Howell said. “That golf tournament [Masters] means more to me than anything.”

at Hurst shot a 4-under 68 on Sunday to beat top-ranked Lorena Ochoa and Yani Tseng by one stroke at the Mastercard Classic. Hurst sank a long putt on the 18th green at the tough BosqueReal Country Club to finish at 10-under 206. No 1 ranked Ochoa (69) had three bogeys and six birdies, while Tseng (70) had three bogeys and five birdies. “The 17th and 18th coming in was very exciting,” said Hurst, who won for the first time since 2006. “I just tried not to get ahead of myself out there, and we made it happen.” Tseng had led until the last hole. “I just feel really sad,” she said, wiping away tears. “I just don’t know what to say.” Ochoa was also disappointed, saying she had a “complicated day” and that her frustration at not being able to beat this course got the best of her.
