OH, GIRL!

It’s not a cruise anymore for event ‘pretties’: they’re earning lower wages and being seen in fewer numbers as the country falls on hard times By Mayuree Sukyingcharoenwong D A I LY X P R E S S

T

he economic recession is biting hard: it’s not only carmakers and vehicle buyers but also the attractive event girls that are feeling the pinch at this year’s Bangkok International Motor Show. The models – of the female variety, that is – are earning lower wages compared to previous events and are seen in fewer numbers at the latest 12day event. Even their style of dress is less revealing. Jitta Sulaparitayatorn, a Lexus “pretty”, says her monthly income has dropped by half – from up to Bt50,000 to only Bt20,000 – due to fewer events and lower turn-outs. She says many organisers have called off their events despite booking her in advance. Many of the event girls have complained to her about the problem, “but none of them have stopped working as event girls”, she adds. Jitta says she has been selected to present Lexus’s IS250C convertible sportscar because of her “compact” build and energetic character – “qualificaDAILY

tions that match the vehicle’s image”. A Mazda pretty, who identifies herself only as “Rath”, says her income has dropped by one-fifth because of fewer events and lower wages. “But my wages in a large event like this have not been reduced,” she adds happily. Mazda has hired only four event girls this year, from a total of six last year. The company still provides each girl with two outfits. But Rath, 23, is optimistic: she says the downturn may not worsen drastically and that she expects to see greater political stability, so the ecomony should kickstart again. Pornsiri Siribud, 24, a Chevrolet pretty, says she has not been affected by lower wages at other events and can still cope with the situation. She says Chevrolet is paying her the

same rate as the past four years. “My working days this year are more than the previous years – 14 days in a row – which I am happy about,” she adds. Mazda’s Pimjuta Krikull, who handles the event girls’ activities, says the number of staff and the size of the auto firm’s booth have been reduced to cut costs. She says all four Mazda pretties know their work well. What she’s worried about is the “ill intentions” of photographers when they take pictures. “A” from Chevrolet says he and his colleagues have received the same wages as previous years possibly because the company had a good bugdet plan in advance of the motor show.

Drive off in an eco car Eco cars are a good option for prospective vehicle buyers at the Bangkok International Motor Show this year due to the global recession and fluctuating oil prices. One of the new “economy” models drawing in the crowds is the Chinese-made Cherry QQ, a 1,100cc city car selling for Bt379,500. Malaysia’s Proton is another attractive buy with its 1,200cc Savy priced at Bt399,000 and 1,600cc Persona CNG going for Bt549,000, while Toyota is offering a 1600cc Altis CNG costing Bt736,000. Lexus, not wanting to miss the boat, has hit the street with its hybrid RX450h SUV. The price? A whopping Bt6.39 million. Despite low fuel consumption, hybrid cars are still expensive worldwide and not widely used. Businessman Surachai Wongchaiya, 50, says he is interested in the Cherry but comments that its price should be lowered to Bt300,000. He says he owns two cars and is looking for a third one to use as a city car. Praphat sae-Wang, 26, an employee, is also eyeing the Cherry as his first car, but is weighing whether he should buy a brand-new car or go for a used one. Praphat admits he had a change of heart after seeing a Proton, which is not much more expensive, is larger and comes with a better design. Mayuree Sukyingcharoenwong, DAILY XPRESS

Desperately seeking donors HAVE AN ORGAN TO DONATE? YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE D A I LY X P R E S S

T

he future is looking bleak for terminal patients as they desperately wait for lifesaving organ transplants. Of 2,380 on the waiting list, just 36 look set to receive organ donations. “The percentage of organ donors is just about 1.5,” Thai Red Cross Organ Donation Centre director Visist Dhitavat says. Most patients need vital kidney transplants, but there are also some who are bound to face sure death if no donated heart or liver comes their way. “We want to emphasise how significant an organ donation can be,” Visist says. “We hope more people will be interested in becoming organ donors.” Dista Jongjit recounts how her daughter could not live a normal life after she was diag-

nosed with a heart defection. “She had to see a doctor regularly from the age of 9. In the beginning I didn’t think her condition could become serious, but I was wrong,” the mother said. Two years ago, Dista’s daughter could no longer go to school because her heart became so feeble. “We were told a heart transplant was the only way to save her,” Dista says. Fearing for her daughter’s life, Dista couldn’t help but petition HM the Queen for assistance, which she received. Her daughter was sent to Chulalongkorn Hospital as a patient under Her Majesty’s patronage and received a heart transplant. “We are extremely grateful for Her Majesty’s gracious help. Also, I deeply appreciate the person who donated the

mother who says her intention is to help others. “I don’t ask for anything more from you,” she had whispered in her brain-dead son’s ears when she decided to donate his organs to the Red Cross Organ Donation Centre.

“But I must admit that I really found it hard to cope with the fact that my son was already dead. In the beginning I hoped he would survive,” Thanyaporn says. Her son, 23, crashed into a bridge while riding his motorcycle. He was declared brain dead soon after. “I was running around madly asking whether ‘brain dead’ really means my son is dead. But after it was clear he was gone, I decided to donate his organs,” Thanyaporn says. The Thai Red Cross Organ Donation Centre is now campaigning hard. “We expect the campaign to boost the number of donors by at least two-fold,” Visist says. According to him, interested donors can conveniently contact his centre by calling 1666 if they want to donate a specific organ to a terminal patient. “By doing so, you can make a fellow human’s life better,” Visist says.

PC worm to evolve on April Fool’s Day ‘Conficker’ or ‘DownAdUP’ is programmed to modify itself on Wednesday to become harder to stop A F P , San Francisco

A

tenacious computer worm which has wriggled its way onto machines worldwide is set to evolve on April Fool’s Day, becoming harder to exterminate but not expected to wreak havoc. A task force assembled by Microsoft has been working to stamp out the worm, referred to as Conficker or DownAdUP, and the US software colossus has placed a bounty of US$250,000 (Bt8.8 million) on the heads of those responsible for the threat.

The worm is programmed to modify itself on Wednesday to become harder to stop, according to Trend Micro threat researcher Paul Ferguson, who is part of the Conficker task force.

Update your security The worm, a self-replicating program, takes advantage of networks or computers that haven’t kept up to date with security patches for Windows RPC Server Service. It can infect machines from the Internet or by hiding on USB memory sticks carrying

data from one computer to another. Once in a computer it digs deep, setting up defences that make it hard to extract. Malware could be triggered to steal data or turn control of infected computers over to hackers amassing “zombie” machines into “botnet” armies. A troubling aspect of Conficker is that it harnesses computing power of a botnet to crack passwords. “There is no evidence of it going into attack mode or dropping any particular payload on April 1,” Ferguson said in an interview. “What people controlling the botnet are doing is building in survivability because of efforts by the good guys to lessen the harm.”

ome of the siblings in a family where a father and his son have been jailed for suspected sexual abuse of their respective daughters are insisting the father is innocent. On Thursday, authorities in Turin said they arrested a 63year-old man for allegedly abusing one of his daughters for 25 years and his 41-yearold son for allegedly abusing his own four daughters.

Blaming the son Turin newspaper La Stampa quoted several family members, including the elder man’s wife and some adult daughters and sons as defending the father and blaming the son for all the abuse. Two of the adult children

said in interviews on Italy’s Sky TG24 TV that they believe their father is innocent but that their brother had committed some kind of abuse, without saying exactly what kind.

‘No wrongdoing’ Defence lawyers quoted in Milan daily Il Giornale say their clients have denied wrongdoing. The Turin case immediately drew comparisons in Italian and foreign media to that of Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man recently convicted of holding his daughter captive for 24 years in the basement of his house and fathering her seven children. But authorities say the women and girls in the Turin case were not held captive.

laying hordes of bad guys – the more the better – in fast-paced video games improves vision, a study published yesterday showed for the first time. Far from being harmful to the eyesight, as some had feared, action games such as Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, or Left 4 Dead provide excellent training for what eye doctors call contrast sensitivity, the study found.

FAR FROM BEING HARMFUL TO THE EYESIGHT,GAMES SUCH AS COUNTERSTRIKE,CALL OF DUTY,OR LEFT 4 DEAD PROVIDE EXCELLENT TRAINING... Contrast sensitivity is the ability to notice tiny changes in shades of grey against a uniform background, and is critical to everyday activities such as night driving and reading. It often degrades with age. The findings, published in Nature Neuroscience, reveal a previously unsuspected adaptability in the brain, and could open the way to new therapies. The researchers found that the action buffs were 50 per cent more efficient at detecting contrast.

Harry, 24, served with the British Army in Afghanistan for 77 days with the Household Cavalry regiment until a reporting embargo broke down in February 2008. He had previously been blocked from serving in Iraq due to the sensitivities of sending senior royals to fight in war zones and the likelihood of them becoming high-profile targets and increasing the risk for their colleagues. “I’d love to do what Harry did out in Afghanistan,” William was reported as saying. “That’s why we train – because we want to be out there on the front line. Some spa operators in Taiwan, like those in Japan, South Korea and other countries, have imported a special kind of toothless fish to nibble the feet of bathers in their pools, claiming the fish remove dead skin, give a pedicure and treat psoriasis and other ailments. But Liu Yi-lien, director of the Ilan County health bureau, was quoted as saying that “there is no scientific data to substantiate the claims of its medical benefits, and in fact there could be a hygiene problem”. He also warned that if people with skin disease, sores or open wounds on their feet put their feet in hot springs, it could spread an infection to other bathers. – DPA

apanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa has earned an international reputation over the past decade for his horror films, including the 1997 serial-killer thriller “Cure” and the 2001 ghosts-invading-theInternet chiller “Pulse”. But with his latest film, “Tokyo Sonata”, Kurosawa moves outside the horror genre and into the realm of family drama. “There hasn’t been a big internal change on how I think about things. It is simply I made a string of horror films and I wanted to try to do something different,” Kurosawa explains. In its own way, “Tokyo Sonata” is a horror film, albeit one without ghosts or murderers. It delves into the alltoo-real terror of unemployment. It shows a family falling apart after the father loses his office job. Instead of telling his wife, he dresses in his business clothes and “goes to work”, standing in employment lines, eating lunch at a bread line and commiserating with friends in the same position. “I wanted to make sure I was making a film that wasn’t just an innocent and happy portrait,” says the 53-year-old filmmaker. We are still exploring issues of desperation,

loneliness and alienation. The same sort of things I was doing in horror films.”

Glimmer of hope For all of the film’s hopelessness, the film does have a slightly upbeat note. “I am always interested in providing some measure of hope with my films,” says the director. Though the father’s obsession with keeping his job loss from his family may seem a bit extreme, Kurosawa notes that it is part of Japanese tradition. “The average salaried businessman in Japan, when he goes out to work, what he does is often kept from the family,” he says. “The family has no clue what they do. So it creates an illusion of authority.”

Nice recovery, Ananda Our battered best actor bounces out of a hospital bed with a book By Windy D A I LY X P R E S S

T

he Year of Ananda is living up to expectations, with the ubiquitous Ananda Everingham scooping up an armful of Best Actor awards even if his legs, injured in a nasty motorcycle accident, are refusing for now to walk onto a film set. “My foot is still pretty messed up, so in the meantime, instead of doing nothing and feeling sorry for myself, I figured I’d do something personal,” he tells Daily Xpress. The Lao-Australian is publishing a book of photographs chronicling the 99 days after

his late-November accident. His company, Halo, is handling sales and distribution. “A lot of people have approached me about doing an autobiography,” Ananda says, “but for me that’s a bit absurd. I’m 26 years old and I have nothing profound to say.” Premier League star Wayne Rooney’s autobiography, released when he was 20, strikes Ananda as meaningless.

Scary pictures Ananda’s photo book ranges from Bangkok to his favourite place, Chiang Mai, but among the pictures, he says, will be “some gruesome shots, taken before the plastic surgery on my face”. The star of “Shutter” is probably joking about the cosmetic surgery, but he was pret-

ty banged up when his bike slammed into a utility pole in Chiang Mai, by far the worst instance thus far, he says, in an “accident-prone” life. Ananda was knocked unconscious but got a replay later from witnesses. Besides the damage to his legs, a section of his forehead was skinned, requiring layers of stitches, and the bridge of his nose was broken. In the downtime that’s ensued, Ananda and Halo are also launching a community website with AIS to which students can upload their work, which will hopefully inspire younger people. He’s got a very good reason for starting his own company: Without a Thai passport, he needs a work permit to stay in Thailand!

Good one, chief The boss won an award, so we’d best be relaying congratulations: Nation (and Daily Xpress) founder Suthichai Yoon picked up this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award from Hamburger magazine for his work in the media, including around-the-clock Suthichai TV news and skilful interviews. Suthichai’s TV show “Cheepajorn Loke” (“The World’s Pulse”) picked up the trophy for Best Edutainment Programme. “Some people say it’s far too serious,” says co-host Veenarat Laohapakakul, “but I’m glad the viewers love it, and I thank them for their support.”

DAILY XPRESS

love scope BY EUGENIA LAST

March 30 – April 4, 2009

ARIES March 21-April 19

You will attract romance wherever you go this week. Your Aries energy and drive will be inviting for anyone looking to share an adventure. Taking charge will be considered sexy and passionate and will certainly bring the same in return. TAURUS April 20-May 20

Don’t even consider getting involved with someone telling you a sob story about his or her bad relationship. If someone is still in a relationship, you must consider him or her off-limits and spare the heartache that results from a secret affair. GEMINI May 21-June 20

You certainly know how to have fun but if you are dating too many, you may end up pushing someone you could have a long-term relationship with away. Weigh the pros and cons of a one-on-one relationship before you ruin your chances. CANCER June 21-July 22

You’ll be attracted to all the wrong people. Don’t mix romance with your job or you may be out both emotionally and financially. Instead, enjoy a friendship and refuse to fall for someone who can influence your position.

An office to call home

How to turn a corner or a closet into your own working space By Terri Sapienza THE WASHINGTON POST

M

illions of people work from home. Wireless technology has made this easy at a time when a struggling economy has forced many people to spend more time at home. Even if you just need a place to sort mail, pay bills and check your e-mail, having a dedicated space to get the job done is essential. Almost every new home now includes an office. In older homes, remodelling jobs have included conversions of loft spaces, rooms over the garage, basements, spare bedrooms and even dining rooms into places where homeowners can park their computers. For a time, the typical home office was a built-in desk area in the kitchen. Once on everyone’s renovation wish list, the kitchen desk is falling out of favour, experts say. The spaces end up being too small and easily cluttered. If you’re short on spare

rooms, look for “an unused pocket of space that can be fitted with shelves, cabinets, electrical power and a chair”, says architect Amy Gardner, who converted a bedroom closet in her Washington apartment into her workspace. She removed the clothing rod and installed shelves and a countertop that flips down as needed. Chris Plantan, founder a paper company in Minneapolis, decided to use her dining room, placing a piece of glass on an old farm table and transforming it into a functional

desk. Whether you have an entire room, a converted closet or a tiny nook carved out of a corner, the basic essentials for any well-run office are the same. You need a desk, a comfortable chair, storage, paper and pen, and proper lighting. And as is the case with everything in the home, keeping things uncluttered is key. “An office space doesn’t have to be large or grand,” says Plantan, “just wellthought-out and organised.”

YOU NEED A DESK, A COMFORTABLE CHAIR,STORAGE, PAPER AND PEN, AND PROPER LIGHTING.

LEO July 23-August 22

Take a walk on the wild side and you will attract someone as interested in trying new things as you are. You can talk your way into anyone’s heart. Getting back together with someone from your past you never quite got over is likely. VIRGO August 23-September 22

You’ll be impulsive, causing trouble if you venture too far from home. Remember what you have already before you go looking for something new. You may want to consider reuniting with someone instead of taking on someone new. LIBRA September 23-October 22

You can take what you want and feel good about yourself and your choices when it comes to love. No one will turn down your advances and the chance to get involved in a committed relationship is looking good. Ask and you shall receive. SCORPIO October 23-November 21

Don’t give in to pressure. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do in order to gain someone’s approval. Keep in mind that if someone is asking too much, he or she is probably not the right person for you to pursue intimately. SAGITTARIUS November 22-December 21

Plan to entertain at home and you'll make an impression that won’t soon be forgotten. Keep in mind that once you win this person's approval he or she isn’t likely to go away, so be honest about the way you really feel. CAPRICORN December 22-January 19

What you want may not be what you get when it comes to love. Don’t be fooled by someone who is trying to impress you by being everything you want him or her to be. Ask specific questions and be sure before you make promises. AQUARIUS January 20-February 18

You’ll be emotionally ready to get in the game of love but try not to jump too quickly before you get the lowdown on the person you find most interesting. Looks can be deceiving and so can first impressions. Take your time. PISCES February 19-March 20

Your erratic attitude may stand in the way of your getting together with someone who is good for you. Don’t hem and haw waiting for someone better to come along. Find out what’s being offered: Maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Saturday’s Puzzle Answer

By Eugenia Last

Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

Today’s Birthday: Speak your mind and be open to ideas, activities and events you’ve never experienced before. Changes to the way you do things or what you do will result in creativity that will enhance the way others see you. Don’t be too eager to give away too much; your generosity will be your downfall. Reap the rewards for your hard work. ARIES *** March 21-April 19 When it comes to making money or formulating deals, you have to tell it like it is and let everyone know what you want and need to proceed. Positive results will come from taking proper control. TAURUS *** April 20-May 20 It’s your life and you must be willing to be responsible for the results. Deception is being used in emotional ways to convince you to make unhealthy decisions of no benefit to you.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★

GEMINI *** May 21-June 20 You can play the game as well as anyone, so why are you letting your emotions get the better of you? Call someone’s bluff and stop him or her from taking over. CANCER *** June 21-July 22 Someone you love may be acting childish. Don’t get involved in idle chatter or gossip that can only cause you problems in the future. Concentrate on getting ahead and doing things your way. LEO **** July 23-Aug. 22 Look for a way to promote your plans. Your ability to communicate your ideas and incorporate what others are doing into your own goals will help you build a strong future. Love is in the stars. VIRGO ** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 A fast talker may try to convince you to spend on something you shouldn’t. Don’t get angry, just play it smart and say no. Put your time, effort and hard work into your home and family.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

LIBRA ***** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 You can form a good partnership that will enable you to reach your goals faster. Your creative ideas coupled with the drive your partner has will make you successful. Love is looking favourable. SCORPIO *** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 Change may be necessary but don’t let it be costly. If someone wants too much, say no. Put your energy to work for you and develop what you need to help you produce the most and the best you can. SAGITTARIUS *** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 You have to look at your personal life and make the right adjustments to achieve happiness. If someone is playing games with you or bringing you down, address the situation instead of running away.

Norah Jones Actor Richard Dysart is 80. Actor John Astin is 79. Actor Warren Beatty is 72. Drummer Graeme Edge of the Moody Blues is 68. Musician Eric Clapton is 64. Actor Robbie Coltrane is 59. Actor Paul Reiser is 52. Rapper MC Hammer is 46. Actor Ian Ziering is 45. Singer Tracy Chapman is 45. Singer Celine Dion is 41. Singer Norah Jones is 30.

CAPRICORN ***** Dec. 22-Jan. 19 You will find it easy to get along with acquaintances but those you are close to will not be as accommodating. Expand your circle of friends and you will recognise what true friendship means. AQUARIUS ** Jan. 20-Feb. 18 Emotional matters may escalate if you haven’t got a good understanding of the facts involved. Travel and communication will fall short of your expectations. PISCES **** Feb. 19-March 20 Jumping from one thing to another will unnerve the competition. You have to be able to keep a secret. You risk being played for a fool if you believe someone is really truly on your side.

Flamboyant Fiji break HK drought

Hidayat, Pi claim India Open titles

Fiji won a tense final against South Africa 26-24 to claim their first Hong Kong Sevens title in 10 years yesterday. The Fijians turned on the style in a flamboyant first half before clinging on as South Africa agonisingly put a last-gasp conversion wide. Fiji took the last of 10 previous Hong Kong titles in 1999 and also lifted the 2005 World Cup here, while three-time finalists South Africa are still searching for their first win. – AFP

Second-seeded Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia defeated Muhammad Hafiz Hashim of Malaysia 21-18 21-19 yesterday to clinch the India Open men’s singles title in Hyderabad, while top-seeded Pi Hongyan of France took the women’s event. Pi, ranked fourth in the world, rallied to beat fifth-seeded Julia Wang Pei Xian of Malaysia 17-21 21-15 21-14 in the women’s final. In the men’s doubles final, the experienced Malaysian duo of Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah defeated the new Singapore combination of Hendri Kurniawan Saputra and Hendra Wijaya 21-9 21-11. – AP

Ferrari leave Aust with nothing Ferrari limped away with no points from the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday with both Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen failing to finish the season-opening race. Team boss Stefano Domenicali said the reigning constructors’ champion lacked reliability and strategy choices. “That was definitely not a start worthy of Ferrari, from any point of view,” he said. “We were lacking on the reliability front, with the two cars forced to retire and our performance was not up to the potential we had expected after our winter testing. Our strategy choices did not work out, especially in the case of Felipe.” – AFP

Bellamy writes off Wales’s hopes Wales captain Craig Bellamy said his side do not have a “glimmer of hope” of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa after a 2-0 Bellamy loss at home to Finland here on Saturday. “That was two poor sides trying to contest this game and neither of us have got a glimmer of hope of qualifying,” Bellamy said. “That is a fact, from what I’ve just seen.”

Lewis Hamilton

World champion Lewis Hamilton said he drove one of his best-ever races to take third place after being 18th on the starting grid in the Australian Formula One Grand Prix. Hamilton had to start near the back of the grid. “Considering the package we’ve got, I wrung every last ounce of pace out of the car, drove one of my best-ever races and absolutely raced my heart out – I’m so satisfied,” Hamilton said. – AFP

J

enson Button won the Formula One season-opening Australian Grand Prix yesterday, beating his team-mate Rubens Barrichello and giving Brawn GP a 1-2 finish in its debut race. Button led from start to finish, with the race finishing under safety car conditions following a late accident. Barrichello recovered after being slow off the start, while

world champion Lewis Hamilton crossed the line fourth but was promoted to third place by a post-race stewards decision which penalised Toyota’s Jarno Trulli for overtaking under safety-car conditions. It was the first time since 1977 – when Jody Scheckter won for Wolf – that a team had won its debut F1 race, and the third time that a team had finished first and second at its first attempt. Alfa Romeo did it in the first ever Grand Prix in Britain in 1950, and Mercedes did it at the French GP in 1954. It was only the second GP

win for Button, who is in his 10th year of F1. The win capped a remarkable turnaround for the former Honda team which was at real risk of extinction in the off-season when the Japanese auto-maker pulled out of F1 in December. Team principal Ross Brawn took over the team, which has benefited greatly from 2009 development spending by its former owner last year. “This is a fairy-tale ending for the first race,” Button said. “Some people may say it’s a pity the race finished under the safety car but I don’t care, I won the race and that’s all I care about.”

Lapse of judgement: Vettel

Sebastian Vettel ends race.

After trailing closely behind race winner Jenson Button from the start, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel’s chance at a podium finish vanished in a lapse of judgement with three laps to go when he collided with BMW’s Robert Kubica. “We were in a strong, strong position, but then a couple of laps from the end I had a stupid racing accident with Robert,” Vettel said. “At the time I turned in I was ahead, but I couldn’t keep up speed in the corner and Robert was on a harder tyre, so was much quicker.” As the race headed to a close Kubica, in third position, attempted to pass Vettel on the outside heading into turn five. “At the time we collided he was in front, but I had nowhere to go. I couldn’t stop the car, or turn to the right and my tyres were gone,” Vettel said. “It was a shame as it meant the end of the race for both of us.” – A P

O’Hair survives tough day to keep lead at Arnold Palmer Invitational Sean O’Hair survived a windy, rugged test at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday and wound up in the final group with Tiger Woods for the second straight year – with one big difference. This time, the tournament is in his hands. Despite three bogeys in the last four holes, O’Hair had a one-over 71 and a five-shot lead over Woods going into the final round at

Bay Hill Club. “Sometimes, you have to hang on for dear life,” O’Hair said. “Those three bogeys didn’t reflect how I played.” Woods, the defending champion and a five-time winner, was fortunate to be that close. He made bogey putts of 10 feet and 25 feet on the last three holes, the last one on No 18 after Woods never found a shot that plugged

O’Hair had a six-shot lead with four holes to play when just like everyone else, he had to hang on for dear life. But at least he wound up in the best spot, at 7-under 203 and the largest 54-hole lead at Bay Hill since Woods

led by five in 2003. Woods had a flyer from the rough on the 16th hole that hit a cart path and went 50 yards right of the 16th green. His chip went over the green and nearly into the water, and he knocked in a 10footer to escape with bogey. From deep rough on the 18th, he again went at the green, and the ball disappeared into the shaggy bank framing the lake. – A P

Sweden’s Edfors fires birdies on 16 and 18 to stave off Prayad’s challenge at Black Mountain A G E N C I E S , Hua Hin

weden’s Johan Edfors endured some heart-stopping moments before completing a wire-to-wire victory at the Black Mountain Masters yesterday. Big-hitting Edfors fired a four-under-par 68 in the final round at the Black Mountain Golf Club to triumph by two shots over Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng and England’s Chris Rodgers in the inaugural US$500,000 Asian Tour event. Prayad charged up the leaderboard with a superb 64 and gave himself every chance of retaining his 50th place on the world rankings and earn a ticket to the US Masters in two weeks time. He will need to wait until the completion of the tournaments in Europe and United States later yesterday to know his fate. Indian rookie Anirban Lahiri produced an eye-catching 68 for fourth place after fighting for the lead down the straight while countryman Gaganjeet Bhullar broke the course record with a stunning 63 to finish tied fifth alongside Thai duo Chapchai Nirat (67) and Thongchai Jaidee (68). It was a timely victory for Edfors, who had not won a title following his bumper 2006 season where he triumphed three times on the European Tour. But victory, thanks to his four-

I wasn’t planning on doing that,” smiled Edfors. “I made a couple of poor shots and bad decisions and then had to really fight for it at the end.” Edfors was in control until an errant drive which landed next to a tree led to a double bogey on 16 and dropped him into a tie for the lead. But cheered on by a partisan Swedish crowd in the coastal resort town of Hua Hin, he bounced back with a 10-foot birdie on 16 to regain a oneshot lead and then wrapped up formalities with another birdie on 18 from 15 feet to earn the

I knew I had it in my hands and knew that I needed to perform in the last few holes,” said Edfors. “This is one of the nicest wins of my career as I’ve not had so many Swedes supporting me during my other wins.” Smooth-swinging Prayad said his youngest son had told him at the start of the final day to shoot an eight-under round while his ailing mother was also upset that he had not played well all week in his hometown. “The putting made the difference in the last two days.”

The 20-year-old Shin – hailed as “The Final-Round Queen” in South Korea – had a 10-under 206 total on the Papago Course. After winning three US LPGA Tour titles last year, including the Women’s British Open, she won the HSBC Women’s Champions this month in Singapore for her first victory as a tour member. “I made a few mistakes on my drives, but my putting and my iron shots were very good,” said Shin, who joked that her iron play was so good that her caddie told her she didn’t need him. Kim Im-kyung, another South Korean, who led after the first two rounds, still was in front by two strokes after 10 holes in the third round, but a bogey at 11 and a double bogey at 12 led to a 71 and dropped her into a second-place tie with Karrie Webb (69) at 9 under. Suzann Pettersen (70) was 8 under. Two-time defending champion Lorena Ochoa had her first sub-par round, a 70 that left her 2 under, but was upset with herself and the course. “I feel like I haven’t played too bad, but the score hasn’t shown anything,” Ochoa said.

England manager Capello knows Ukraine will be tough for the team at Wembley in the World Cup qualifiers

F

abio Capello admits injuryhit England won’t get the kind of easy ride they enjoyed against Slovakia when they face Ukraine in Wednesday’s crucial World Cup qualifier. Capello’s team brushed aside the Slovakians in emphatic fashion in Saturday’s friendly at Wembley as Wayne Rooney’s double and goals from Emile Heskey and Frank Lampard completed a 4-0 romp. But injuries to Heskey and Carlton Cole forced Capello to call up Tottenham’s Darren Bent ahead of the clash against one of England’s tougher Group Six opponents. Results: Group One At Malta: Malta 0 Denmark 3 (Larsen 12, 23, Nordstrand 88); At Tirana: Albania 0 Hungary 1 (Torghelle 38) At Oporto, Portugal: Portugal 0 Sweden 0; Group Two: At Chisinau: Moldova 0 Switzerland 2 (Frei 32, Fernandes 90)At Ramat Gan, Israel: Israel 1 (Golan 55) Greece 1 (Gekas 42) At Luxembourg: Luxembourg 0 Latvia 4 (Karlsons 25, Cauna 48, Visnjakovs 71, Pereplotkins 86); Group Three At Belfast: Northern Ireland 3 (Feeney 10, Evans 47 Zewlakow 61-og) Poland 2 (Jelen 27, Saganowski 90+1); At Maribor: Slovenia 0 Czech Republic 0; Group Four: At Moscow: Russia 2 (Pavlyuchenko 32, Zyryanov 71) Azerbaijan 0; At Leipzig, Germany: Germany 4 (Ballack 4, Jansen 9, Schweinsteiger 48, Podolski 50) Liechtenstein 0; At Cardiff: Wales 0 Finland 2 (Johansson 42, Kuqi 90+2) Group Five: At Yerevan: Armenia 2 (Mkhitaryan 32, Kazaryan 88) Estonia 2 (Vassiljev 35, Zenjov 67); At Ghent, Belgium: Belgium 2 (Dembele 65, Sonck 89-pen) Bosnia-Herzegovina 4 (Dzeko 7, Jahic 75, Bajramovic 81, Misimovic 86); At Madrid: Spain 1 (Pique 60) Turkey 0; Group Seven: Romania 2 (Marica 50, Stoica 74) Serbia 3 (Jovanovic 18, Stoica 44-og, Ivanovic 59); At Kaunus, Lithuania: ithuania 0 France 1 (Ribery 67); Group Eight At Larnaca: Cyprus 2 Konstantinou 33, Christofi 56) Georgia 1 (Kobiashvili 71-pen)

Ukraine are unbeaten in their first three qualifiers and would move within two points of group leaders England with a victory at Wembley. With that in mind it was no surprise that the England coach wore a worried look as he contemplated an injury list that seemed to grow by the minute on Saturday. Heskey was due for a scan on the leg injury that forced him off after 15 minutes, while Cole has been sent home with an adductor problem. Peter Crouch was also substituted as a precaution and Shaun Wright-Phillips missed out with an ankle problem.

ROONEY COULD PLAY AS A LONE STRIKER. HE IS LIKE THE JOKER CARD.HE CAN PLAY IN ANY POSITION.HE PLAYED VERY WELL. Fabio Capello

“We played very well with lots of chances to score goals but we have to move on, to improve. I hope against Ukraine that we will be better,” Capello said. “Ukraine are a good team. They have drawn one game, and that was against Croatia. They defend well and are good on the counter attack. It is an important game for us. “Heskey had cramps in the hamstring so we substituted him. He needs a scan and after we will decide. We need him. “Crouch will be ok for Wednesday, Carlton Cole? No, he will go home.” At least the Italian can rely on Rooney, whose two-goal

haul was the perfect response after his red card for Manchester United at Fulham last weekend. Capello admitted Rooney could even play up front on his own if it comes to it. “Rooney could play as a lone striker. He is like the joker card. He can play in any position,” Capello said. “He played very well and scored the goals. It is important for us that Wayne stays fit.” After opting to use Steven Gerrard on the left-wing despite his superb form for Liverpool recently in a more central advanced role, Capello could take pride in the way the tactic worked.

A BECK OF A JOB German takes the crown with easy win over Swede Lerpong Amsa-ngiam DAILY XPRESS, Nakhon Ratchasima

ndreas Beck of Germany captured his first Challenger trophy of the season as he stopped the run of Swedish qualifier Filip Prpic 7-5 6-3 in the final of the US$50,000 LTAT-SAT Korat Open yesterday. The top seed from Germany proved more consistent and calmer in the baseline duel to end a 10-month victory drought. His previous Challenger title win was in Dresden last May. “We played solidly from the baseline but it came down to experience and that made the difference. I’m happy to be heading home with this title,’’ said the 23-year-old left-handed German. Ranked 104th in the world, Beck fought back from a break down at 2-3 to take the opening set against the bad-tempered Swedish who received a warning for abusing his racquet. Prpic further dug his own grave in the second set mainly due to his inability to handle his anger. At 3-3, he was so upset with a line call that he whacked a ball and threw the racquet that almost hit a ball boy. He was deducted a point for unsporting behaviour and never recovered thereafter. Beck flew home last night with a cheque of US$7,200 for winning the tournament, leaving Prpic to be content with the runner-up prize of US$4,240.

Andreas Beck’s experience made a big difference during the final yesterday. After reaching a career high at 86 earlier this month, he will return to the top 100 when the ATP rankings are updated today. “I hope to finish the year inside the top 50. I will take a few weeks off and will enter the clay season with the tournament in Monte Carlo.” The two legs of Thailand’s Challengers were won by German players. Florian Mayer claimed the first at the Rama Gardens Hotel last Sunday by beating Danai Udomchoke in the final.

Dulko upsets Jankovic

Andreas Beck

Recent No 1 Jelena Jankovic lost her third straight match when she was upset by Gisela Dulko of Argentina 6-4 7-6 (5) at

the Sony Ericsson Open in Florida early yesterday. The final match of the second

round ended at 12.20am. Jankovic, last year’s runnerup, blew a 5-2 lead in the second set and another 5-2 lead in the tiebreaker to Dulko. The third-seeded Serb also lost her opening match at this month’s BNP Paribas Open. Top-ranked Serena Williams reached the third round by beating teenage wild card Alexa Glatch 6-2 6-3 leaving only two American women in the draw. The other was Venus Williams, who beat Shahar Peer of Israel 6-3 6-3 in her opener. On the men’s side, top-ranked Rafael Nadal beat Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-2 6-2 and fourth-seeded Andy Murray struggled to beat Juan Monaco of Argentina 4-6 6-3 6-2.

England captain John Terry believes Wayne Rooney has the potential to overtake even David Beckham to become England’s record caps holder if he continues his current rate of progress. Terry finds it hard to believe that Rooney, at the age of just 23, will earn his 50th cap if he plays against the Ukraine in Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier at Wembley. “His potential is frightening,” said Terry, who himself reached 50 caps against Slovakia on the same day that David Beckham set a new record of 109 caps for an England outfield player. “We were speaking about Becks and my 50th cap on the way to the match and I was saying to Wayne he could possibly get to 150! It’s a reachable target – and certainly 100 is. “He’s probably missed 20 games through injuries and suspensions and things already. But he’s very young, very talented and one of the best in the world that’s for sure.” Rooney’s goals against Slovakia took his tally to 21 for England so far, meaning even Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 may not be out of reach if he is able to stay fit over the coming decade. “I think we’re seeing Wayne mature. As I’ve said before, just let Wayne Rooney play football. That’s what he’s best at. He’s one of the best in the world.” AFP

India closed the penultimate day at 252-2, requiring a further 62 runs before they can start setting New Zealand a target and set about saving the Test. Gambhir on 102 and

Tendulkar not out 58 were firmly entrenched with their unbroken third-wicket stand of 89, and the New Zealand bowlers were helpless to threaten on the benign wicket. Having been forced to follow on 314 run in arrears, India believed they had at least saved the game after a dogged day in which they only scored 205 runs, but lost just one wicket, Rahul Dravid out for 62. “We’ve shown that we can

fight back,” Dravid said. “We’ve not been put in this position a lot over the last year. We found ourselves with our backs to the wall on day four and we needed some character, we needed to fight and we showed that.” However, New Zealand coach Andy Moles remained confident his side could still pull off a victory on the final day. “It’s an exceptional batting wicket,” he said. “You’re looking

for mistakes from the batters as opposed to the ball misbehaving on the last day as you’d normally like to see. “We’ve still got a chance to win. We’re playing an exceptional Indian team.” While his primary responsibility was to save the game for India, Tendulkar was not prepared to divert from his innate instinct to attack as he hooked, cut, and drove off the front and back foot with exquisite timing.

THESPORT Australian Grand Prix had journalists rushing to their history books to look up when last a team had such success in its debut race. Brawn GP drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello finished the race in Albert Park in the same order in which they had started: first and second. The last time a team had won its maiden Grand Prix was in 1977, when South African Jody Scheckter won the Argentina Grand Prix for Wolf racing, but never before has a team managed to occupy first and second on the grid and then finish in that order in the race. Not long ago the Formula One future for the three Bs in the team (Button, Barrichello and part-team owner and principal Ross Brawn) looked very bleak. Previous owners Honda pulled out of the sport over the world economic crisis in December and a new buyer for the team was at first nowhere to be seen. The Brawn deal was only finalised in early March. “It was a really difficult time,” Button said after winning the race. Earlier he admitted that even taking the pole had been sensational. “To come from a situation in which you do not even know if you are going to compete and then to take pole in the first race, that is just unbelievable.” A large part of the success is owed to Brawn, who already looks back at a successful career in Formula One with several teams, including Ferrari. It took a while to get everything into place and Brawn needed a lot of money to stage the buy-out and during that time nobody quite knew what would happen. “It was terrible to just sit around and wait for news,” Barrichello said. “And to now be able to drive this wonderful car is just fantastic,” he added. There remain some question marks though as the appeal court of motorsports governing body FIA is still to decide whether the diffuser of the Brawn is allowed. A decision is expected on April 14.

Sweden’s Johan Edfors led from start to finish in the Black Mountain Masters, closing with a 4-under 68 and a twostroke victory in the Asian Tour event. England’s Chris Rodgers shared second place at 15 under with Prayad Marksaeng, who surged up the leaderboard with a closing round of 64. >PAGE 25

The Spanish were full of praise for the country’s national football team after the hard-fought 1-0 defeat of Turkey. There was agreement across Spain that not only is Vicente del Bosque’s side one of the strongest on Planet Football at the moment – but also that it is the best ever national side in the 100-year history of the Spanish federation. >PAGE 26
