Minister orders preservation of burnt-out building as club’s operators try to bulldoze evidence By Piyanuch Thamnukasetchai D A I LY X P R E S S
J
ustice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga has stepped in to prevent the Santika Club’s operators from demolishing the charred remains of the club before the case concerning alleged buildingcontrol violations is heard on Friday. Tharit Pengdit, secretary-general of the Commission for the Prevention and Suppression of Corruption in the State Sector, said yesterday that the operators had tried to demolish the building claiming they had to return the leased land to the landlord.
Investigation ongoing But as the commission has filed building-control charges for the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to take up, an order to impound the building to preserve the scene has been given. The DSI’s investigation is now focusing on the club’s alleged tax violation, said Tharit, but the Finance Ministry has also set up a fact-finding committee to probe the club’s payment of taxes since it started operating five years ago. Photos of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra are being snapped up by red-shirted protesters in front of Government House.

he political heat is at boiling point but that hasn’t stopped two working women wading in with new books. At the national book fair, Bangkok Post reporter Wassana Nanuam launched her latest book about the September 19 coup: “Lub, Luang, Prang II” (“Secrets, Deceptions and Disguise”) unmasks the powerful men behind the ousting of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra. Lt Sunisa Lertpakawat, meanwhile, has followed up her “Thaksin, Where Are You?” with another question. “Thaksin, Are You Okay?” describes the time the ousted premier has spent overseas since the political tide turned against him. While the two new books look set to sell like hot cakes,
things may not be so sweet for their writers.
Military anger Speaking to the Thai Journalists Association (TJA), Wassana said a friend in the military told her that she’s already upset some powerful figures with her book. “I know military circles well but there’s no way I can predict where this boiling-hot political situation is heading,” she adds. Wassana insists that she was completely objective when it came to investigating Thaksin and the people behind the coup. “Thaksin used to criticise me harshly too,” the veteran reporter points out. TJA vice president Wanchai Wongmeechai says Wassana has a proven record of objective coverage.
“She is not a political tool. I hope her book will not be politicised,” says Wanchai. He adds the TJA will intervene to help if any reporter is threatened.
‘Thaksin, Are You Okay?’ Sunisa has also stepped into hot water. Yesterday, she was summoned by her supervisor, Army spokesman Maj-General Veeran Chantasatkosol, who demanded an explanation for “Thaksin, Are You Okay?”. After a three-hour grilling, Sunisa left without speaking to the media. A source said her book might violate a ministerial regulation barring Defence Ministry staff from writing about politics. “She has now been ordered to submit a written explanation,” the source said. Sunisa faced a similar disciplinary problem when she published “Thaksin, Where Are You?”. The case went to military court but as yet there has been no ruling.
Motorists are being advised to avoid the roads around Dusit Palace’s Suan Amporn Park for the duration of the Red Cross Society Fair, which started yesterday and lasts until April 7. Traffic will be banned at certain times of the day on Uthong Nai Road from the Rajvithi intersection to Suan Amporn on Sri Ayutthaya Road, from the Rama V intersection (Benjamabopit) to the Ratchasima intersection, and on the section of Rajdamnoen Nok Road from the Sri Ayutthaya Road intersection (King Rama V Equestrian Statue) to Phitsanulok Road (Missakawan Park) and the Dusit Palace plaza. From now until Friday night the roadblocks will operate between 2pm and 11pm. From April 4-6 they will be up between 10am and 11pm, and on April 7 they will operate from 10am to midnight. For details, call the traffic command centre at 1192 or visit www.TrafficPolice.go.th.
Manga porn Culture Minister Teera Slukpetch will submit a pornographic video clip based on the Naruto manga cartoon series to the police and the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to take action against the webmasters publishing it. Colombia incest suspect ‘not a blood relative’ A 59-year-old Colombian farmer accused of incest for allegedly fathering eight children with his daughter denies that he is the woman’s biological father. Arcebio Alvarez, a widower, was arrested last week on charges of incest and sexual abuse, according to Bogota councilwoman Gilma Jimenez. She said Alvarez maintains his innocence and says that he is the stepfather of the now 35-year-old woman who allegedly fathered eight of his children after 14 pregnancies. The alleged victim was five when her mother died and 13 when her first child was born. Jimenez said the woman came forward after one of her sons expressed angry intentions toward his father and alleged grandfather. “She loves her father. She hates the man who became her partner,” said Jimenez. “This causes submission and something that is difficult to understand. It’s something very complicated.” – A P
‘SCREEN US TEENS FOR DEPRESSION’ Medical panel acknowledges 2 million are affected by ‘dangerous’ condition A P , Chicago
A
n influential governmentappointed medical panel is urging doctors to routinely screen all American teenagers for depression – a bold step that acknowledges that nearly two million teens are affected by this debilitating condition. Most are undiagnosed and untreated, said the panel, the US Preventive Services Task Force, which sets guidelines for doctors on a host of health issues. The task force recommendations go farther than the American Academy of Paediatrics’ own guidance for teen depression screening.
An estimated six per cent of US teenagers are clinically depressed. Evidence shows that detailed but simple questionnaires can accurately diagnose depression in primary-care settings such as a paediatrician’s office.
Helping them cope The task force said that when followed by treatment, including psychotherapy, screening can help improve symptoms and help kids cope. Because depression can lead to persistent sadness, social isolation, school problems and even suicide, screening to treat it early is crucial, the panel said.
The task force is an independent panel of experts convened by the federal government to establish guidelines for treatment in primary-care. Its new guidance goes beyond the paediatrics academy, which advises paediatricians to ask teen patients questions about depression. Other doctor groups advise screening only high-risk youngsters. Because depression is so common, “you will miss a lot if you only screen high-risk groups”, said Dr Ned Calonge, task force chairman and chief medical officer for Colorado’s Department of Public Health and Environment. The group recommends research-tested screening tests even for kids without symptoms.
A Singapore-based church paid one of its leaders more than S$500,000 (Bt11.7 million) in its last financial year. The New Creation Church, which raised $19 million in just one day in February for the construction of its new premises, paid one employee between $500,001 and $550,000. The church did not confirm if the money was paid to its leader, Senior Pastor Joseph Prince. But honorary secretary Deacon Matthew Kang was quoted as saying it was the church’s policy to “recognise and reward key contributors... and Senior Pastor Prince is the main pillar of our church’s growth and revenue”.

Man kills two sisters, police save third A man fatally stabbed his 17-year-old sister, decapitated his five-year-old sister in front of a police officer and then turned toward his nine-year-old sister with a knife in his hand before officers shot him dead in what their chief described as “a killing field”. There was no clear motive for the events that unfolded on Saturday, the day after the fiveyear-old’s birthday, in a Boston suburb. But there was no doubt about the carnage wrought by 23year-old Kerby Revelus against his sisters in the two-family home they shared with their parents and grandmother. Five-year-old Bianca was killed as a cake for her birthday sat on the kitchen table. Nine-year-old Sarafina dialed 911 and watched police shoot her brother as her elder sister Samantha lay dead on the floor. Sarafina was hospitalised on Sunday with stab wounds. The attack came about 24 hours after Revelus got into a fistfight with a man living next door, police said. – A P

ccentric” can be a coded insult when it comes to Hollywood leading men, unless they happen to be named Johnny Depp. Take Nicolas Cage, whose bellowing, wildeyed performances can make him seem as measured as a man with his head on fire – and not just in “Ghost Rider”. A different Cage is in theatres in the Alex Proyas thriller “Knowing”. The star known for “taking chances”
(another bit of code) is a model of restraint in a world wobbling on the edge of disaster. “I’m attracted to sciencefiction films because they’re the place now where you can address powerful subjects in an abstract landscape,” he says. “These are the films today that ask the intelligent questions. My feeling too is that, when you’re in a film with extreme and paranormal things happening, one approach is to take the character to a very
natural performance, which is the choice that Alex and I made with this film.” The result is a caged Cage, one that might remind some viewers of Bruce Willis in his relatively stately performance in “The Sixth Sense”. Like that 1999 hit thriller, “Knowing” presents a man trying to make sense of a disturbing puzzle that has a youngster at the centre of it.
By the numbers Cage portrays John Koestler, an astrophysics professor whose son Caleb (played by Chandler Canterbury) attends a school ceremony at which a
50-year-old time capsule is opened. The child ends up with a piece of paper from the capsule that’s covered with rows of numbers. His father discovers that the digits are hardly random – they accurately predicted the date, death toll and coordinates of every major disaster since the Eisenhower administration. The perplexed scientist delves further into the mystery and a dark suspicion begins to grip him: The document might foretell a looming disaster of global proportions. Cage, coming off “Bangkok Dangerous”, “National
Treasure: Book of Secrets” and “Next”, was concerned about the calibre of his next film, literally. “I’m a bit concerned about the frequency of seeing my face in movies where the screen is full of people with guns. I’m realising, when you take a step back, there’s quite a few that have guns. “One of the things I’m attempting to be more aware of is the power of films and the responsibility that comes with that. Movies have the power to change people’s minds.” > > AT T H E M O V I E S “Knowing” is playing in cinemas.

fter touring Hong Kong and Singapore, Zee Nite brings the singers from India’s TV talent show “Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” along with Zee TV’s hottest stars from Mumbai to perform live in Bangkok. Call it the “Slumdog Millionaire” syndrome or maybe it’s just a side effect of the film’s award-winning song “Jai Ho”, but Indian pop culture has never been hotter, especially in Thailand, where audiences have long been fans of Bollywood. Zee TV’s “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa”, which literally translates as “Do Re Me Fa So”, is the channel’s highest-rated programme. It’s similar in concept to “American Idol” or “Academy Fantasia” with one difference – the votes that decide the winner of each year’s competition can come from 187 countries, Thailand included. The performance will feature songs and dancing with stars that include Aneek Dhar, winner of the “Sa Ra Ga Ma Pa” Challenge 2007, Harpreet Deol, a 2007 finalist and hot 2009 competitor Yashita Yashpal. While Doel will show off his sizzling bhangra renditions Yashpal will croon her way to theatre-goers’ hearts. Other performers will be singer Aneek Dhar, winner of the 2007 season, and Zee TV stars Jasveer Kaur and Kushal Punjabi.

When he was a kid he came with a Chan Chinese opera troupe, “and hardly ever went out”, he said on the Modernine show “Woody Kerd Ma Kui”. On subsequent visits he was a cinema superstar and, as when he travels in Japan and South Korea, “I don’t have much privacy here.” Chan does, however, manage a few words of Thai, enough to “get around town”. He can give the directions liew sai, liew kwah and trong pai and he knows when to tell hawkers that their stuff is too pang. But the first thing he said when host Wutthitorn “Woody” Militajinda asked if he spoke Thai was, “Pom rak khun!” No wonder he has so many Thai fans.

nglish fashion brand Topshop is now offering Thai shoppers the same free “style advice” it gives regular customers Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton and Beyonce Knowles. Charlotte Swindlehurst – who’s both the chain’s assistant manager and a style adviser herself – was recently at the outlet in the first-floor Beacon Zone at CentralWorld to introduce the service. You don’t have to be shy about someone “helping you get dressed”, she says. The service is easy and convenient, and a great time-saver. First you fill in a form: waist, chest and hip size, colour preferences, your personal fashion heroes – that sort of thing. Swindlehurst will ask whether you need an outfit for work, hitting the town or something special.
Then she’ll help you zero in on the best choices. Styling advice will boost your confidence in what you wear and guide you on the latest trends, she says. “Sometimes a customer says, ‘I don’t like red’, and I say, ‘Why not? You look hot in it!’” Swindlehurst isn’t a big believer in trends, though, pointing out that a given style will always suit someone, any time, but she notes that “more feminine” clothes are back for this spring and summer. Small tulip dresses are paired with blazers for a girlie but cool look. Block colours and pairs of bright hues are big too, with simple, minimal styling. Since most Thai women are petite, Swindlehurst says, many of these trends will suit them perfectly.
Stimulating collagen at turbo speed I am only in my late 20s but I already have skin discoloration, enlarged pores, blemishes and breakouts. Do you have any advice on treatment? The main reason for premature ageing of the skin is sun damage and many treatments are available to reduce the effects of ageing. An Ultra Turbo treatment may help to remove superficial and unevenly pigmented skin cells and unclog
pores. Thinning the dead skin allows for the absorption of topical medication. The Ultra Turbo Treatment can be used to efficiently treat acne, blackheads and other breakouts. The treatment delivers medical oxygen, water, acne medication and other optional medical products to the skin at turbo speed without any pain or discomfort. It’s non-invasive, with the water and oxygen helping to stimulate collagen without causing inflammation.
That makes it suitable for someone with sensitive skin. Your face may be temporarily pinker after the Ultra Turbo treatment but should go back to normal within 30 minutes, allowing you to return to your normal activities with no downtime. After the treatment, you must avoid sun exposure and protect yourself with sunscreen to reduce the causes of accelerated skin ageing. It’s never too early to start.

Casio releases two ultra high-speed cameras that will do away with shutter lag By Smiley Byte D A I LY X P R E S S
D
o you get annoyed when you press your digitalcamera button at exactly the right moment and then discover that your image is just a tad late? That problem is known as shutter lag, and it’s caused by the fraction of a second that elapses between the moment you press the shutter and the one that the camera actually records. Casio has set out to resolve the problem by adding two new ultra-high-speed models to its popular EXILIM series.
The EX-FS10 and EX-FC100 High Speed EXILIM, launched recently in Singapore, offer a 30-shot-per-second burst rate plus high-speed movies at a maximum of 1000 frames per second. At the heart of shooting capacity is a high-speed CMOS light-sensor chip. A leader in digital cameras for more than 10 years, Casio has also developed and enhanced its popular Best Shot software, resulting in functions that allow users to capture perfect shots without missing crucial moments. Both the FS10 and FC100
come with LAG Correction function, which allows users to select three different correction times. It’s easy to use too. Half pressing the shutter button performs a continuous shutter operation that prerecords a series of images. When the shutter button is fully pressed, the camera will then save the image of the action that occurred 0.1, 0.2 or 0.3 seconds previously. The two high-speed models also come with HS Best Selection shooting mode. The mode pre-records a series of shots and automatically selects the image with the best facial ex-
pression using Face Detection, Anti Blur, Smile Detection and Blink Detection technologies. The FC100 comes with 5x optical zoom, 2.7-inch wide LCD and CMOS Shift Stabilisation technology while the FS10 comes with 3x optical zoom and 2.5-inch LCD without CMOS Shift Stabilisation. Casio also announced three other “high-speed” EXILIM models – the EX-Z400, EXZ270, and EX-S12. None is equipped with the CMOS, though each has Casio’s highspeed image processing engine to enable users to cut and paste moving subjects
onto still backgrounds. All three models have Best Shot Dynamic Photo scene mode that lets users extract the subject and paste it into a background image. Jebsen & Jessen, the authorised distributor of Casio cameras, will launch these five new models sometime next month The FC100 will retail for Bt16,900, the Z400 for Bt11,990, and the S12 for Bt11,990. The distributor has yet to set the prices for the Z270 and FS 10. With additional reporting by Jintana Panyaarvudh from Singapore.

Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.
Today’s Birthday: You can make some helpful professional changes. This is a fabulous year to get involved in subjects, projects and interests about which you feel passionately. The more you like what you are doing and the people with whom you are engaged, the better you will do. ARIES **** March 21-April 19 You can make gains financially, vocationally and emotionally. A chance meeting or an intentional contact with someone from your past will lead to an opportunity to make extra cash in your spare time. TAURUS *** April 20-May 20 Something is going on behind your back so, before you make any decisions, find out the truth. Someone may be leading you on. Don’t trust anyone offering something too good to be true.
DIFFICULTY RATING ★★

You’ll do better with people you have known a long time. CANCER *** June 21-July 22 Uncertainty will cloud your day, causing you to second guess everything you do. Your emotions will be erratic and will confuse you. Don’t try to resolve something that needs more time to settle down. Love relationships will flourish. Expand your mind, your philosophy and your awareness of other cultures. SCORPIO *** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 Don’t get carried away with trivial matters. You can spin your wheels all you want but that won’t help you get ahead. Regardless of the outcome it’s how you conduct yourself on the journey. Be strong. SAGITTARIUS *** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 You’ll be drawn to the people who have always been there for you. Love will play an important role in a decision regarding your location and your future. Job losses at GP winners Brawn Australian Grand Prix sensation Brawn GP are to make redundant around 270 employees, a third of their staff, in order to cut costs, chief executive Nick Fry has said. He was speaking shortly after the new team had stunned the world of motorsport by placing one-two in Melbourne on Sunday through Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello. “It’s very unfortunate that we’ve got to do that but it’s the change of technical regulations and obviously we are now a private team,” Fry told the BBC. “We are about 700 people at the moment and we talked to the staff about going down to about 430, something like that, which is where we [predecessors BAR] were in 2004.” – AFP
Becks happy to be super-sub David Beckham insists he is happy to play a bit-part role for England despite becoming his country’s most capped out-field player. Beckham passed Bobby Moore’s previous record of 108 caps when he came on as a halftime substitute in Saturday’s 40 friendly win over Slovakia. “Sometimes substitutes come on and can help secure a game, or change a game. I was happy with getting on and happy with
the assist. It is what I have done for my whole career, and if I get a chance there are players like Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey or Peter Crouch to get on the end of it. If I start, then I start. If I don’t, then I am part of the team – a good team which is going forwards.” – AFP
Federer, Serena, Venus advance Serena and Venus Williams and men’s world No 2 Roger Federer cruised into the fourth round of the WTA and ATP hardcourt tournament in Miami on Sunday but second seed Dinara Safina crashed out. Reigning Australian Open champion Serena Federer Williams defeated China’s Peng Shuai 7-5 6-2 while US fifth seed Venus Williams, the reigning Wimbledon champion, beat Germany’s Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 7-5 6-3. Australia’s 42nd-ranked Samantha Stosur stunned Russian second seed Safina 6-1 6-4. Swiss star Federer, a Miami champion in 2005 and 2006, advanced by beating German 28th seed Nicolas Kiefer 6-4 6-1 to book a fourth-round match against American Taylor Dent, who beat Spanish 15th seed Tommy Robredo 7-5 6-3. – AP

England captain Andrew Strauss confirmed that batsman Kevin Pietersen was denied permission to leave the team’s troubled tour to West Indies to visit home. Pietersen has appeared unhappy throughout the near three-month tour. He said that the current England squad was a “pretty damn lonely place to be.” Strauss said: “It’s not worth dwelling on his comments too much and now we move to St Lucia. It’s over. I had a chat with him about it and we move on.” – AP

razil have work to do after the five-times world champions could only draw 1-1 in Ecuador in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier. Julio Baptista drew first blood for the visitors with 17 minutes remaining but Noboa’s equaliser a minute from time for the hosts left the Brazilians fourth in the continental group – the final guaranteed qualifying slot for next year’s finals in
South Africa. Brazil, who have never failed to qualify for the finals, have 18 points having won just four of their 11 games to date – five points less than group leaders Paraguay, who saw their lead over Argentina reined in Saturday with a 2-0 loss to improving Uruguay. The Uruguayans, whose current fifth spot would be enough only to earn a crack at a play-off with a North, Central America and Caribbean zone side, are now at Brazil’s shoulder with 16 points. Baptista, brought on just moments earlier for Ronaldinho,
fired a low effort past Ecuador keeper Jose Francisco Cevallos but Noboa levelled matters on the rebound after Cristian Benitez saw an effort blocked. The star-studded visitors only held onto a point thanks to a series of fine saves by their Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar. “We didn’t play our best football – and they never stopped running,” the shot-stopper admitted on Brazilian television after Brazil stretched their winless run in Quito to more than a quarter of a century, their last success coming in the Copa America in 1983.
Stadium stampede kills 19
Supporters carry a lifeless body at the stadium.
Women fainted with grief and wailed in sorrow yesterday outside a morgue in Abidjan, Ivory Coast where the bodies of 19 soccer fans killed in a weekend stadium stampede were being held. Mothers and sisters of the dead sobbed as they held each other, while fathers and brothers stood, their eyes red with sorrow. World soccer body Fifa demanded an investigation into Sunday’s tragedy and the prime minister of Ivory Coast convened an emergency Cabinet meeting Monday to look into the stampede that left 19 dead and at least 132 injured at a World Cup qualifying match. Thousands of fans at the capital’s main Felix Houphouet-Boigny arena jostled for position before Sunday’s game between Ivory Coast and Malawi, setting off a panic that led to the stampede.

BAY HILL THRILL Tiger takes crown with winning putt on the 18th hole AP, Orlando, Florida
iger Woods drove away from Bay Hill wearing the navy blue blazer traditionally awarded to the winner of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He is more interested in a jacket of a different colour, but this was a good start. Next stop, the US Masters at Augusta National. Woods couldn’t have written a better script on Sunday, even if he’s guilty of plagiarism. For the second straight year at Bay Hill, he made pivotal putts along the back nine and came to the 18th hole needing a birdie to win. From the middle of the fairway, he had 164 yards to the hole – eerily, the same distance as last year. Sean O’Hair was in the final group, same as last year. The putt was far easier this time – only about 12 feet up the hill with a slight left-to-right break – but the outcome was predictable to just about everyone except for the lone voice from the bleachers that blurted out, “Play-off.” Not a chance. Woods holed the putt, and broke into a routine that also was similar to a year ago. He crouched and backpedalled as the ball rolled to the hole, but instead of slamming his cap to the ground, he punched the air with a roundhouse and hugged his caddie, Steve Williams, who lifted him slightly into the air. “It feels good to be back in contention, to feel the rush,” Woods said. “It’s been a while,

Inset: the victor’s spoils. but God, it felt good.” The final birdie in fading sunlight gave Woods a 3-under 67 and a one-shot victory over O’Hair, who had a five-shot lead going into the final round. It matched Woods’ largest comeback on the PGA Tour, and while it wasn’t quite as stunning as his rally at Pebble Beach nine years ago, it was no less special. Woods won for the first time since he returned from reconstructive knee surgery a week Tiger Woods after his US Open victory, Might the blue jacket help which kept him out for eight him win a green one? “It does, a months. IT WAS NEAT TO FEEL THE HEAT ON THE BACK NINE ONCE AGAIN.
For the first time since Torrey Pines, he felt his heart race and his adrenaline rush. After spending four hours trying to catch up to O’Hair, he spent the final hour trying to hang on. It wasn’t without some drama. He won with a birdie on the 72nd hole for the third time at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. There was a 15-foot bending birdie to beat Phil Mickelson in 2001, and the 25-footer to beat Bart Bryant last year. Woods, who finished at 5-under 275, won for the 66th time in his career. And while the finish was so similar to his Bay Hill victory last year, this was different. “Last year ... there wasn’t any big comeback or anything. I was out there just competing as usual,” Woods said.
A strong finish in the just concluded Black Mountain Masters in Hua Hin earned Prayad Marksaeng a berth in the US Masters at the Augusta Golf Club from April 9-12. After two mediocre rounds which saw him trail leader Johan Edfors by 10 strokes in the Black Mountain Masters in Hua Hin, Prayad crafted a brilliant 8-under-par 64 on the final day to wrap up with 15-under-par 273, which was two shots behind the Swedish winner. As a result, Prayad moved up three places to a career-best 47 in the world rankings this week, which automatically awards him a slot in the first Major of the year for the second straight year. In 2008, Prayad received an invitation to the Masters but back injury forced him to retire in the second round. “After I withdrew with injury at last year’s Masters, I always wanted to play my way back into the tournament. There were people who looked down on me after my withdrawal and said I would never be invited back. So I wanted to prove very badly that I could qualify on my own merit,” said Prayad. arrie Webb had a 5-under 67 on Sunday for a twostroke victory in the J Golf LPGA International, her first win on the tour in two years. The 34-year-old Australian earned her 36th career LPGA Tour title, finishing at 14-under 274. Third-round leader Jiyai Shin of South Korea had a 70 to finish second. Another South Korean, InKyung Kim – the leader after the first and second rounds – finished three strokes back. She had a 70. Webb had an eagle, five birdies and two bogeys in breezy conditions on the 6,711yard Papago Golf Course. She
started the day one shot behind Shin, but took the lead just after the turn. The $225,000 first prize raised Webb’s career earnings to more than $14.5 million, second only to Annika Sorenstam. Webb ended any doubt by knocking her second shot about 10 feet short of the cup on the par-5, 475-yard 18th. She missed the putt, but tapped in for birdie, then pumped her fist in the air in celebration. “I’ve won in Australia in the last two years, but winning on the LPGA against the best players in the world is obviously very important to me,” Webb said. She had not won on the LPGA Tour since her five victories in 2006. “I kept waiting for Karrie to make a mistake,” Shin said, “but she played very well.”

oren Kjeldsen shot an evenpar 72 on Sunday to win the Andalucian Open by three strokes. The 33-year-old Dane, who shot a course-record 62 to lead by one shot after the third round, totalled 14-under 274 to hold off David Drysdale of Scotland (74) and win US$$221,500 in prize money. Kjeldsen also won last year’s Volvo Masters in Spain.
Coming off a bogey that left him level with Drysdale, Kjeldsen hit into the lake at the 16th but saved par by rolling in an 18-footer. Kjeldsen holed an even longer birdie putt at the 17th as Drysdale bogeyed to trail by two shots going into the last. Kjeldsen could only threeputt the final hole for bogey and he now heads to Augusta for his debut in the US Masters, which runs from April 9 to 12.
he Asian Tour has been accused of jeopardising players’ livelihoods by threatening to fine members and ban them if they compete in the upcoming Volvo China Open without permission. Earlier this month, the Asian Tour said its players had unanimously agreed not to take part in next month’s tournament in Beijing which is being cosanctioned by the European Tour and the new OneAsia Super Series. But the entry policy does not fully reflect that position, according to OneAsia, which has controversially taken over the running of the event from the Asian Tour. Top Asians like Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee and India’s Shiv Kapur, who qualify through the European Tour, will be allowed to tee-off without penalty as will Chinese stars Liang Wenchong and Zhang Lianwei.

INDIA’S SECOND WALL Gambhir’s marathon stand secures draw AFP, Napier, New Zealand
heroic stand of 137 in nearly 11 hours at the crease by Gautam Gambhir ensured the second Test between India and New Zealand ended in a draw yesterday. When Gambhir’s match-saving, marathon performance came to an end he had batted through three days’ play and rescued his side from a perilous situation. After New Zealand made 6199 declared, India were in strife when they were rolled for 305 in their first innings and lost their opening second innings wicket at 30 when asked to follow on. But Gambhir, in his 24th Test, was unfazed by the carnage and set about a rescue mission that lasted 642 minutes and ended with India all but safe. It was left to VVS Laxman on 124, the 14th century of his Test

They were 162 runs ahead and their 1-0 series lead was intact when time was called 70 minutes early. India, who won the first Test by a handsome 10 wickets, have not won a series in New Zealand in 40 years.
New Zealand have one chance left to salvage a draw from this three-game series when the final match starts in Wellington on Friday. The second Test was played on an extremely placid wicket with the bowling damage concentrated in one 26-over burst on the third day when New Zealand ripped out six wickets
for just 58 runs. Gambhir’s second innings response for India, when he came in on Saturday and departed on Monday, was exemplary. That he scored 64 fewer runs than Jesse Ryder mattered little to India. Of more importance was that he soaked up 153 more minutes of playing time than the New Zealander. His dogged fifth Test century was the seventh longest stand by an Indian, though it was also the lowest score among the top 30 innings of endurance by Indian batsmen. “He’s the only one who saved the game for us,” said Indian captain Virender Sehwag. “I think we can call him ‘the second wall’,” he added, acknowledging also veteran runmaker Rahul Dravid, with innings of 83 and 62, who is known as “The Wall” for his stoic performances. New Zealand removed Indian talisman Tendulkar early on the final day when he was caught behind for 64.

ndrew Strauss gathered 79 from 61 balls to lead England to a nine-wicket victory under the DuckworthLewis Method over West Indies in the rain-affected fourth One-day International at Kensington Oval on Sunday. Fortune and the D/L Method again smiled on England, following a two-hour long delay for rain which left the tourists with a victory target of 135 from 20 overs. They got over the line with nine balls to spare, when Strauss guided Dwayne Bravo to third man for his ninth four. The result means the series is now tied 2-2 and sets up a thrilling conclusion on Friday at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia, if the West Indies players back down from their threat to strike in protest to outstanding issues with the West Indies Cricket Board. The rain started during the interval between innings, after England sent West Indies in to bat and the home team made 239 for nine from 50 overs.
