GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!

Our city’s beauty is on the inside By Anupan Pluckpankhajee Art therapist

I

’d like to see Bangkok regain its charm, because it’s not as beautiful as it used to be. By beauty I’m not talking about the buildings and architecture – it goes deeper, to our way of life. Nowadays, everybody rushes around in their own bubble. Perhaps if we took things more slowly, we would be a little more compassionate to each other. Regaining the beauty of this city might not be out of our reach.

Experts had predicted temperatures would soar to 40 degrees Celsius in Bangkok yesterday, as the sun moved higher in Thai skies, but it turned out that the heat peaked at 38C. The Meteorological Department reports that the temperature in Bangkok at 3.10pm was 38C while the hottest spot in Thailand as a whole was the north of Lampang province where the mercury crept a degree further to 39C.

Bangkok’s BIG carbon footprint According to the Bangkok Assessment Report on Climate DAILY

YEARS from disaster Bangkok could sink beneath a metre of water unless residents join the fight against climate change, a new report warns

Change 2009, each city dweller produced an average of 7.1 tonnes of carbon dioxide – the greenhouse gas mostly responsible for global warming – in 2007, almost two tonnes more than the global average of 5.5 tonnes. “We hope it raises awareness of the issues and stimulates action from residents and the private and public sectors to reduce the impact and enable the city to adapt to climate

change,” says Park Young-Woo, regional director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), who cosponsored the report.

Rising sea levels The report warns that land subsidence combined with rising sea levels could leave Bangkok under 50-100 centimetres of water by 2025. Rising temperatures could also affect the flow of waters in the

Chao Phya and Mae Klong rivers, from which most of Bangkok’s water supply is drawn. A co-ordinated approach to tackling climate change and its impacts is needed “as a matter of urgency”, it says. “We strongly believe that the cooperation of every sector of society is required,” said Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra. “Our communal action in

ahidol University International College (MUIC) won the EU-Thailand National Intervarsity Debate Championship 2009 on Tuesday, triumphing for the third consecutive year. The rookie category was topped by a team from the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) while Ruamrudee International School (RIS) pupils argued their way to glory at the high school level. The champions were among 88 teams comprising 300 students from 62 universities and high schools nationwide competing in this year’s debates. Arguing for the motion “This house believes that developing countries should share the same burden as the

EU in fighting global warming”, three students from MUIC took the floor of the Sri-Burapa Auditorium at Thammasat University’s Tha Prachan campus to debate against Assumption University (ABAC) for the grand final.

We want to make that better and give you more of a voice.” Google profiles contain basic information and pictures that people don’t mind sharing. TAXI RAPIST GETS 8 YEARS IN JAIL Driver of ‘safe’ black cab drugged and sexually assaulted 12 women A P , London

T

he driver of one of London’s iconic black cabs was sentenced to at least eight years in prison for an 18-month campaign of rape and assault against his female passengers. Prosecutors said John Worboys, 51, repeatedly drugged and sexually assaulted women who had been out late drinking, telling them he’d won some cash while gambling and inviting them to join him in a celebratory glass of champagne. Secreted inside the drinks were sedatives, and those who joined him in a drink often remembered little of what happened next.

However, one woman told Croydon Crown Court in south London that what should have been a 40-minute trip home took three hours. Some were left with semen stains on their clothes, and items or DNA from other victims was found by police at Worboys’ home.

85 crimes Worboys denied the charges, but he was found guilty last month of assaulting 12 women. More women have come forward since then, and detectives have linked him to at least 85 crimes. The assaults were particu-

larly troubling because black cabs, the distinctive sedans that ferry busy Londoners across the city, are advertised as one of the capital’s safest forms of transport, particularly for women. Black-cab drivers undergo rigorous testing and are subject to criminal checks. The black cabs are often touted as a safe alternative to unregulated cabs that try to poach customers by undercutting official rates. Justice David Penry-Davey told Worboys he had abused black-cab drivers’ “worldwide reputation” for reliability and trustworthiness to “ensnare young, intelligent and sensible women who had enjoyed a night out and whose only mistake was to get into your cab late at night”.

Miss California says she stands by her anti-gay-marriage comments, even if they may have cost her the Miss USA crown. Carrie Prejean defended her views on NBC’s Today show, telling host Matt Lauer that she spoke from the heart during Sunday’s pageant when she said that “marriage should be between a man and a woman”. Openly gay pageant judge Perez Hilton, who also appeared on the Today show, said that Prejean should have “left her politics and her religion out because Miss USA represents all Americans”. Prejean, who was first runner-up at the pageant, told Lauer that “at that moment after I’d answered the question, I knew that I was not going to win because of my answer”.

No horsing around Florida authorities have opened a criminal probe to determine whether the deaths of 21 prized polo horses from a Venezuelanowned team were intentional, a result of negligence or simply a terrible accident. Officials believe the horses died from an adverse drug reaction, toxins in their food or supplements, or a combination of the two. – AP

New Zealand motel bans rowdy town

Scientists discover nearly EARTH-SIZED PLANET Earth is a “good example that we are progressing in the detection of Earth-like planets”. Scientists also discovered that the orbit of planet Gliese 581 d, which was found in 2007, was located within the “habitable zone” – a region around a sun-like star that would allow water to be liquid on the planet’s surface, Mayor said.

n a discovery that one expert called “extraordinary”, European astronomers reported finding one planet close to Earth’s size in a different solar system and realising that another planet could possibly sustain a large ocean. European researchers said on Tuesday that not only had they found the smallest exoplanet ever, called Gliese 581 e, but they realised that a neighbouring planet discovered earlier, Gliese 581 d, was in the prime habitable zone for potential life.

1.9 times Earth’s size “The Holy Grail of current exoplanet research is the detection of a rocky, Earth-like planet in the ‘habitable zone’,” said Michel Mayor, an astrophysicist at Geneva University in Switzerland. Exoplanets are planets outside our solar system. Gliese

The Australian owner of a New Zealand motel and his Scottish “Basil Fawlty” manager have banned an entire town, including its member of parliament. Steve Donnelly, owner of the Supreme Motor Lodge in the town of Palmerston North, said he became fed up with the rowdy behaviour of sports teams from Wainuiomata, a town near Wellington. So he and manager Malcolm Glen – who according to the motel’s website is better known as “Basil Fawlty” after the highly strung John Cleese TV character – banned the whole town of 17,000 people. “Having had about a hundred people from there over the last couple of years and maybe one that we liked... it is not worth it and we would do the same to anyone who causes us that level of stress,” Donnelly said. When Wainuiomata’s member of parliament and former minister Trevor Mallard tested the ban yesterday by trying to book in, Glen gave him his marching orders. – A F P

An artist’s impression of ‘Planet E’, foreground left. The planet, in the constellation of Libra 20.5 light years (192 trillion km) away, is only about twice the mass of Earth. The orbit of planet Gliese 581 d, (coloured blue in image) has been refined, placing it well within the habitable zone where liquid water oceans could exist. 581 e is only 1.9 times the size of Earth, while previous planets found outside our solar system are closer to the size of massive Jupiter, which Nasa says could swal-

low more than 1,000 Earths. Gliese 581 e sits close to the nearest star, making it too hot to support life. Still, Mayor said its discovery in a solar system 20.5 light years away from

Fellow astronomer and team member Stephane Udry said Gliese 581 d is probably too large to be made only of rocky material, adding it was possible the planet had a “large and deep” ocean. “It is the first serious ‘waterworld’ candidate,” Udry said. “Surely the galaxy contains tens of billions of planets like the small, Earth-mass one announced here,” said Geoff Marcy of the University of California, Berkeley.

A sense for scent How a passion for perfume led one young man into starting his own aromatherapy product line By Kanikar Jaijumnong SPECIAL TO D A I LY X P R E S S

O

ne of Worrawit Siripak’s fondest memories is the fragrance of the jasmine flowers that his grandmother used to place on top of the drinking water in his childhood home. He credits his decision to go into the aromatherapy and spa business to coming home to that delicious perfume. “My happiness comes from aromas. Now, my bliss is even greater because my work is concerned with aromatherapy products. I’m very lucky to be doing what I love. People ask me how I separate my work and my personal life and my

answer is that I don’t because they are perfectly matched,” says the 33-year-old founder of Panpuri Spa and Aromatherapy. An ambitious youngster, Worrawit worked hard at his studies and got straight A’s throughout primary and secondary school. He graduated with honours from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. “I believed that if I always got good grades, my parents would trust me and give me more freedom in return. And with that freedom, I would be able to do what I wanted to do,” he says. Yet his life underwent a dra-

matic change in 2001. Worrawit was working in New York on September 11 in an office directly opposite the World Trade Centre. He witnessed the entire drama. “It changed me forever. I realised that we have to be happy every minute we have. We should live for today and not tomorrow.” That’s when he decided to launch his aroma business and was soon on his way to Italy to study luxury goods management. Many people keep perfume for several years, only using it occasionally if at all. Worrawit says that’s wrong, explaining that a perfume’s value is its

fragrance. “If we keep it, the perfume will be worthless. We should use its unique value to make ourselves happy,” he says. He loves to share his collection of perfumes with his friends but doesn’t expect them to do the same. “They don’t buy for me either,” he smiles. “My really close friends know I’m really selective when it comes to scent.”

and nurse practitioners who are reviving this once-common practice for keeping Americans healthy and in touch with their doctors. Having virtually disappeared from medical practice by the 1980s, the house call has been making somewhat of a comeback, thanks primarily to Medicare changes that make house calls more easily billable. For generations, the home visit was an institution, something a doctor, black bag in hand, just did. In 1930, house calls made up about 40 per cent of physician encounters with patients in the US, according to a recent article in

the journal Clinics in Geriatric Medicine. Why did the house call fade away? In part, technology was to blame. As new diagnostic tools and advanced treatments became available in hospitals and clinics, that’s where people wanted to go. Financial incentives also worked against house calls, according to the article. And then there’s the fact that private insurance has rarely fully covered such visits. For Eleanor Moss, 81, having a doctor who performs house calls has been a blessing. She suffers from several chronic conditions, including multiple sclerosis. Indeed, it is people like Moss — elderly, with multiple conditions and limited mobility — who represent the biggest clientele for house calls and. treating them at home results in significant cost savings. Although homebound patients represent only 5 per cent of the Medicare population, they consume more than 43 per cent of the budget, according to a congressional analysis. Taler's service now includes 600 patients — tended to by four doctors, three nurse practitioners, three social workers, one office nurse and four support staffers. Departing Moss’ home recently, he summed it up emphatically, and a little wistfully: “That’s what I went into medicine for.”

R

eal Madrid somehow kept their title hopes alive with Gonzalo Higuain scoring a stoppage time winner as the 10-man hosts defeated derby rivals Getafe 3-2 on Tuesday in a see-saw thriller at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real rode their luck to move three points behind leaders Barcelona, who were to host Sevilla yesterday, and if they do retain this title this match will undoubtedly be one of the

turning points. “We should have had a penalty, then they got a penalty, missed it and then I scored at the other end. It was an incredible game,” said hero Higuain. “The euphoria is understandable and we have to enjoy it but then we have to put it into perspective and stay calm. “We are three points behind now and will have to see what Barca do against Sevilla.” Substitute Juan Albin looked to have won the game for Getafe putting his side 2-1 up in the 83rd minute but Guti equalised with a brilliant freekick three minutes later.

Pepe was then sent off for conceding a penalty but Francisco Casquero’s cheeky chipped spot-kick – a la Anton Panenka of 1976 – was saved by Iker Casillas and Higuain went down the other end to net a dramatic winner. Pepe could be in hot water after kicking the grounded Casquero after pushing him to give away the penalty. “I have to apologise to the fans and to Casquero,” said Pepe. “People who know me will tell you I am not like that. This is the first time something like this has happened to me and I am really sorry.”

Liverpool to play in Thailand

UN-FOUR-GIVABLE United in the title driving seat, says Benitez, after Reds held 4-4 by Arsenal AFP, Liverpool, England

iverpool manager Rafa Benitez admitted Manchester United were in the driving seat for the title after watching his side drop two crucial points at Anfield on Tuesday. The Spaniard blamed “massive mistakes” after his side were held to a 4-4 draw by Arsenal, for whom Andriy Arshavin scored all four of his side’s goals – the first player to achieve such a feat at Anfield in a league match since Denis Westcott for Wolves in 1946 – in an astonishing match. Ironically the point was enough to take Liverpool back to the top of the table, level on points with United but with a better goal difference. However, United now have two games in hand over their rivals and barring a catastrophic collapse, ought to seal their third successive domestic title. “I’m really disappointed because we conceded four goals,” said Benitez. “The positive thing is we have scored four goals, but I’m disappointed because we have made massive mistakes. “We have been fighting so hard and we will continue to do so. It has to be like this. “They [United] were already in the driving seat and if they win their games in hand then it will be more and more difficult for us [to win the title].” With five games and 15 points

And he insisted that Sir Alex Ferguson’s side still had it all to do. “They have to win and they still have to play Arsenal yet,” he added. Having bowed out of the Champions League after a 4-4 draw at Chelsea last week, Liverpool have now conceded eight times in two games. It would have been worse for Liverpool had Yossi Benayoun not netted a last-ditch equaliser, the Israel midfielder’s second goal of the game. “It’s very difficult to explain why we conceded so many goals.

IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO EXPLAIN WHY WE CONCEDED SO MANY GOALS.BUT TO SCORE AT THE END SHOWS WE HAVE VERY GOOD CHARACTERS. Rafa Benitez

“But to score at the end shows we have very good characters in the side. “We will keep going until the end. We need to keep the confidence.” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger saluted Arshavin after the Russia striker’s four goals. Arshavin fired the visitors into a first half lead against the run of play before goals by Fernando Torres and Benayoun put Liverpool in control. In a dramatic match full of twists and turns, Arshavin scored two quick goals to turn the game on its head before Torres made it 3-3. There was still time for Arshavin to make it 4-3 before Benayoun had the final say.

Liverpool Football Club will make a stop in Thailand on a lightning tour of Southeast Asia this summer. Organisers Strategic Sports Investment, part of the Profitable Group, said Liverpool FC will fly directly from their training camp in Switzerland for two games in the region – Bangkok on July 22 and Singapore on July 26. The games will be part of the club’s pre-season preparations for the 2009-2010 campaign. Manager Rafael Benitez said: “We have a fantastic group of fans in both Thailand and Singapore and it will be great to take the lads out there again.” Ian Ayre, Liverpool FC’s commercial director, commented: “South East Asia is clearly a key region for Liverpool and the club will be working closely with everyone to ensure this is an exciting and memorable tour.” Former star Steve McMahon, Profitable Group’s commercial director, said: “It will give Liverpool fans in the Southeast Asian region a chance to see their heroes play up close.” “Liverpool’s return to the Kingdom is long overdue,” added Worawi Makudi, president of the Football Association of Thailand. The match between Liverpool and Thailand national team is scheduled to kick off at 8pm at Rajamangala National Stadium. AGENCIES

mir Zaki is set to return to the Wigan line-up for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Blackburn after manager Steve Bruce drew a line under his recent spat with the Egypt striker. Zaki was branded “the most unprofessional player I’ve ever worked with” by Bruce and was fined by the club after he decided to stay in Egypt without permission following international

The on-loan forward has since returned to training following a hamstring strain and Bruce said he would be considered for the Blackburn match. “If I need to pick Zaki and have him involved, I will do so,” Bruce said. “He is back training, and I’ve got to say, training very well.“A scan showed his hamstring is okay now and his fitness is good. I have always said we might see the return of Zaki

Perry’s pride boosted after Masters misery AP, New Orleans

K

enny Perry never took pity on himself for losing a two-shot lead with two holes to play in the Masters. Everyone else did that for him. Among the first to call when Perry returned home to Kentucky were Greg Norman and Phil Mickelson, who know from experience what it’s like to lose a major. He also got a call from Scott Hoch, one of his best friends on tour, who 20 years ago missed a 3-foot putt that would have won the Masters. Among the letters was one from former US President George W Bush. “It was just incredible the outpouring of support,” Perry said. “I had so many people just proud of the way I handled the loss.”

Kenny Perry has had support from all quarters – even George W Bush. Perry, who returns to the US PGA Tour this week at the Zurich Classic, would have been the oldest major champion at 48. It could be that his popularity soars even more by the gracious way he handled

his playoff defeat to Angel Cabrera. He answered every question with brutal honestly. He didn’t make excuses. And he didn’t beat himself up. Perry said he went over the

final two holes during a reflective drive home to Kentucky, especially the chip that he bladed on the 17th hole, and even the three-putt par on the 13th hole. He thinks the turning point came during the walk from the 16th green to the 17th green, after a tap-in birdie to build a two-shot lead. Perry told himself he was two pars away from winning the Masters, instead of concentrating on only his next shot, which he had been doing the previous 70 holes. “I stuck my neck out, thought I was going to win,” he said. “But I just came up a little bit short.” He had a quiet chat with his 85-year-old father. But he didn’t shed any tears of his own, except when he was reading the letters.

The Russian striker celebrates after scoring his first of four goals for Arsenal.

Andrey Arshavin maintains there is plenty more to come from him after the Russian’s four goals put a massive dent in Liverpool’s title bid at Anfield on Tuesday. The 27-year-old produced a brilliant individual display as Arsenal almost snatched victory over the Reds, but were once again undone by poor defending as Yossi Benayoun grabbed an equaliser deep into stoppage time as an amazing match ended 4-4. However, the deadline-day signing insists his display at Anfield is only the start of things to come and said: “I do not think I have adapted yet because in the first half I was quiet, except for the one moment when I scored.” He added: “It is difficult, but I will try – I need time. I am a new player, I have to go through [my own] pre-season and then everything will be better.” Arshavin continued: “I had only scored a hat-trick twice in my career. “I feel good, but also disappointed because we did not get the victory. “Both teams wanted to win. What can I say? It was unbelievable football, but that is England for you.” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger praised his star player. “Arshavin can play everywhere like all the great players,” said Wenger. “He has a lot of tricks and he’s very dangerous.” Wenger refused to write off Liverpool’s title hopes and believes the race is far from over. “It was a top quality game played at a tremendous pace,” he added. “Both teams created many chances and I give my players credit for the way they performed It’s [title race] still very open.
