elebrating the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and his final entry into nirvana, Visakha Bucha Day is the most important in the Buddhist calendar. But not all Buddhists realise the relevance it has for their everyday lives.

The Buddha’s footsteps “It can be your day too,” Phra Maha Wudhijaya Vajiramedhi says. “Look at what Lord Buddha has achieved and follow in his footsteps.” The famous monk, author of many books on dharma, is also the founder of the Vimuttayalaya Institute. Established in 2007, the institute seeks to promote Buddhism and show how its teachings fit in with the modern world. Moments after he was born as Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha is said to have performed the first of seven miracles, says the senior monk,

Overcoming temple dread Alarmed that more and more teenagers are sidelining Buddhism in favour of bad habits, celebrities and ordinary Thais are urging parents to encourage their kids into the temple on Visakha Bucha Day. So, every human has the potential to become enlight-

Twenty-one-year-old university student Phaithoon Thuraphan says that after families, schoolteachers are the individuals who could do most to encourage children to mark Buddhist occasions. “I’ve often invited along teenagers to make merit and do

wian tian at a temple in our village,” says Phaithoon. “It helps you to discover mindfulness and to think carefully before acting.” “Visakha Bucha is an important day in my life – I’ve been visiting temples on this day each year since I was a child. Youngsters pay a lot of attention to celebrating Valentine’s Day with their sweethearts, but a year later your heart might be broken, and the day means nothing at all. In contrast, we can make merit on Visakha Bucha Day every year.”

A family trip Like Kung, 41-year-old company employee Kanyaka Kovitvanij thinks kids gain much from visits to temples and she also suggests parents or grandparents have a role to play. “The media and other agencies are trying to promote important Buddhist festivals in a bid to attract more people to temples, but parents have the most influence. 17-year-old gets nod to remove breasts An Australian court has allowed a 17-year-old girl, who believes she is a boy, to have her breasts surgically removed. The teenager had been on hormone treatment since 13 to block puberty and applied to the Family Court for permission to undergo a double mastectomy to make it easier for her to pass as a boy. Alex suffered from “gender identity dysphoria”, a psychological condition where a person has the normal physical characteristics of one sex but believes they are the opposite gender. Family Court chief justice Diana Bryant said the court decided to allow the breast removal because evidence from medical experts, Alex’s counsellor and an independent children’s lawyer “overwhelmingly” backed the move. orrential rain kept the fun indoors yesterday for 16 finalists with just one more sleep on Queensland’s Hamilton Island before learning which one among them has landed “the best job in the world”. Thunderstorms meant the scrapping of sailing and other outdoor activities for the candidates who were chosen out of thousands to make the shortlist to be caretaker of the paradise island in the Great Barrier Reef. German hopeful Mirjam Novak pampered herself in the spa while waiting to see who

would pick up the six-figure pay packet for six months of cleaning the swimming pool, feeding the fish and producing a blog to relay to the world impressions of Hamilton as a holiday destination. “I guess the rain wasn’t so bad after all, was it?” she said. “I’ve never done anything like this. I’ve never been to a spa, so this is wonderful.”

Result today The one who wins today is to start the job on July 1 and would have the satisfaction of having beaten a whopping field of 34,633 entrants who sent in 60-second video-clip

applications. The online betting agency PinnacleSports has Taiwan’s Clare Wang, an interpreter and skydiver as the favourite. She made the final selection courtesy of a wild card handed her by Tourism Queensland for being voted the most popular contestant. Wang got 151,676 votes – almost three times the tally of her nearest rival. Wang and fellow aspirants – all are under 40, none is from the Middle East, Africa or South America, and two are Australians – are supposed to be undergoing a gruelling interview process. “They keep calling them challenges and assessments, but it’s just a whole big adventure,” Australia’s Hailey Turner said.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has lost one of the yachts in his sizeable personal fleet in a game of poker. The daily Moskovsky Komsomelets said the oligarch lost the US$500,000 (Bt17.5-million) yacht while playing poker in Barcelona, which he was visiting to watch the London football team he owns, Chelsea, in action. Abramovich’s yacht collection, thought to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, has been dubbed “The Roman Navy” by Britain’s press. The Russian newspaper said his poker habit had become a sore point between him and girlfriend Daria Zhukova and that the billionaire, who made his fortune in Russia’s sell-off of state assets in the 1990s, had instead turned to gambling online.

Fox sues Bollywood US studio 20th Century Fox is seeking damages and an injunction against the release of a Hindi-language film in the latest plagiarism row between Hollywood and Bollywood. Fox has submitted a claim at the Bombay High Court for 70 million rupees (Bt50 million) against BR Films over “Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai”, which Fox says is an illegal remake of the 1992 film “My Cousin Vinny”. The US company said BR Films had been given permission to make a film based on the idea of the Oscar-winning movie but that rights for a Hindi-language remake had not been approved. India’s film industry has a long history of remaking Hollywood movies with virtually identical plots, characters and even musical scores. – AFP

Polanksi won’t return for US court date

Convicted as a teen but free at last

Director fled country in 1978 before being sentenced on a charge of sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl

F

ugitive director Roman Polanski will not return to the United States for a hearing this week where his lawyers will seek to quash a decadesold sex case against him. Oscar-winner Polanski, famed for films such as “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Chinatown”, fled the United States in 1978 before being sentenced for his guilty plea on a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza said in February he may consider Polanski’s case at this Thursday’s hearing but only if the director returns from France, where he now lives.

Polanski’s legal team says the film-maker’s conviction should be tossed out on the grounds of misconduct, claiming the late judge who heard his case in the 1970s had improperly colluded with prosecutors.

Controversial allegations The allegation emerged in a controversial 2008 documentary “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired”. Espinoza agreed at an earlier hearing that there appeared to have been “substantial misconduct” in the case. But he said the case could only proceed if Polanski was present. However, Polanski’s attorneys said in a court filing on Monday that the director’s personal ap-

pearance in court “is neither necessary nor relevant” to the question of deciding whether there was misconduct. Polanski won an Oscar in

2002 for directing “The Pianist”. He was previously nominated for an Academy Award for directing “Chinatown” and “Tess”.

Arrested at 13 for a murder he didn’t commit, Thaddeus Jimenez spent more than 16 years in jail before his conviction was tossed out and the man originally responsible for the crime was arrested. Jimenez is believed to be the youngest person convicted of a crime who has been exonerated in the United States. He was tried as an adult and sentenced to 45 years in jail – despite the fact that an alleged accomplice in the murder insisted that another teen had been the shooter and that police were provided with a tape in which that teen confessed. Prosecutors have charged Juan Carlos Torres, now 30, with the murder. Meanwhile, Jimenez, also 30, returned to his mother’s arms a grown man. “Oh my God, I can’t believe it. I can’t believe he’s here,” Victoria Jimenez sobbed as she wrapped her arms around him. “I’m happy to be alive today,” he said as his mother wiped away tears and clutched his sister’s hand. – A F P

ritney Spears’ spectacular show at MGM Grand’s Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 25 was an exhilarating visual extravaganza, and a chance for her legions of American fans to wave farewell before the star leaves home with her Circus Tour for dates in the Europe, Australia and Asia. The multimillion-dollar pop singer was met with wild ap-

plause and cheers by more than 10,000 fans, including many gays, who loved every moment of the show. Some were wearing T-shirts screaming “I Support Britney Spears” and “I’m Britney Bitch”; others were attired in tees that simply showed the star with tousled hair. Interestingly, everyone appeared so entranced by the choreography and her dancing stamina that they forgot she was lip-synching her songs.

The circus production was fantastic, and the Pussycat Dolls (who didn’t lip-synch) proved the perfect opening act with their high energy set that included the hit “Don’t Cha”.

Three-ring circus The show began with a video introduction featuring Perez Hilton parodying Queen Elizabeth I. As the curtains went up, Spears descended from the ceiling in a gold hoop wearing her ringmaster attire to perform “Circus”. She strutted and gyrated on three 360degree stages, which featured sex swings, love couches, uni-

cycles, stripper poles, a gold cage and giant picture frames. She entered a golden cage for “Piece of Me” and pole danced to “Radar” after a brief interlude that featured a performance by acrobats simulating a thunderstorm. The show thrilled the soldout crowd, especially when Spears was lifted into the air on a giant umbrella to perform “Everytime” and by two aerialists for “Touch of My Hand”. She returned on stage to perform “Do Somethin’”, a remix of “I’m a Slave 4 U” and “Toxic”. The encore, “Womanizer”,

THE SLOPING REAR END DESIGN IS AS CLOSE AS AN SUV CAN LOOK TO A COUPE.

That’s my baby! You’ll either love the design of the new BMW X6 or absolutely detest it – you won’t, however, be indifferent By Vijo Varghese D A I LY X P R E S S

L

ogic can sometimes be a tough path to walk, especially when emotions come into play. Take the BMW X6, for instance. Factor in the current economic climate with worrying environmental issues, and an SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) like the X6 makes absolutely no sense at all. It comes with a choice of

three fuel-thirsty engines, a 3.0-litre twin turbo, a 4.4-litre twin turbo or a 3.0-litre twin turbo diesel. It’s a big vehicle with proportions similar to the X5 SUV, but every other aspect of the X6 will beg you to buy it. The X6’s design makes the X5 looks like a clambering giant with too much cellulite in all the wrong places, While the X5 is a typical SUV that

you’d expect soccer mums to drive, the X6 looks prestigious and has plenty of presence. The sloping rear end design is as close as an SUV can look to a coupe. Clean lines and the beautifully curved body panels are an orgy for the eyes. On the inside, however, things are a little calmer. The X6 is a strict four-seater with a partition between the rear seats. It seems to indicate that BMW hopes the X6 will appeal more to executives, perhaps as chauffeur-driven units. My test-drive vehicle was the Xdrive 50i, which comes with a 4.4-litre twin turbo charged engine producing 400bhp. Due to the 2,300kg weight, the X6 can be a little slow at speeds below 30kph. Once past this point however, it provides ridiculous amounts of acceleration. Mated with the six-speed automatic transmission, speeds between 80 and 200khp are barely noticed, The X6 is equipped with torque vectoring, which means torque to each wheel is controlled individually, allowing quicker return to control in

the case of a slippery situation. But its size makes it a little aggravating to drive in the city If your mind can’t keep itself from the X6, then the price just might. The 4.4-litre twin turbo charged version here costs approximately Bt10 million while the less powerful 3.0-litre twin turbo version goes for Bt8.7 million. Love, at times, comes at a price.

Real-conquering Barcelona go into battle confident of beating Chelsea AP, London

arcelona bid to break English football’s recent domination of the Champions League by beating Chelsea tonight and preventing another Premier League showdown in the final. Pep Guardiola’s team goes to Stamford Bridge with the two teams level from last week’s 0-0 semi-final draw at Camp Nou. Barca hopes that Saturday’s spectacular 6-2 victory at traditional rivals Real Madrid has given the team the momentum to beat Chelsea and reach the May 27 final in Rome. The draw last Tuesday gave Guus Hiddink’s team a slight edge going into the home leg. Chelsea hope to finish the job and get to the final for the second season in a row. The Blues lost a penalty shoot-out to Manchester United after a 1-1 draw in last season’s final in Moscow, and the pain from that near

miss still hurts. “We are all determined now to get to Rome and win the trophy because we have come close before,” French winger Florent Malouda. “This now means that our desire is even stronger than it has ever been.” Chelsea have never won European football’s biggest club prize, while Barcelona are chasing their third title to go with the ones they won in 1992 and 2006. In his first season in charge of Barca, coach and former midfielder Guardiola also has opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the Spanish

League after their demolition of Madrid on Saturday. Defender Gerard Pique said the players won’t be complacent after the victory in Madrid. “The victory against Madrid is already history and will be remembered much better if we are able to reach the final in Rome,” he said. “What’s coming up is very important and we have to have our heads focused on that. It’s true that we have been playing at a very high level this season, but we still haven’t won anything.” Chelsea have to at least repeat their performance from last week and keep Barcelona’s top quality strikeforce at bay. The Blues warmed up with a 3-1 victory over Fulham on Saturday. “The best way to prepare for Barcelona was to win at home because that is what we have to do Wednesday,” Malouda said. “We had to show we can perform well at home and it is good for the confidence when you can score three goals. “The negative was that, after we opened the scoring, we conceded a goal quickly and this is the kind of thing you can’t afford against Barcelona.”

United make record offer for Ribery

HULL OF A VICTORY Villa into Europe as Tigers falter in the Premier League AFP, Birmingham, England

ohn Carew’s first-half goal gave Aston Villa a 1-0 win over relegation candidates Hull City on Monday as the Midlands side assured themselves of European football next season. Victory, Villa’s first in 13 matches, saw them regain fifth place in the English Premier League from Everton and secured their spot in the Europa League, which will replace the Uefa Cup. By contrast defeat left Hull just three points above the relegation zone with three games left at the end of a round of matches where all the teams in the bottom eight lost. “It was relief at the end that we have won a game,” Villa manager Martin O’Neill told Sky Sports. “We’ve thrown away leads against Stoke and West Ham, and tonight it was nice to keep a clean sheet.” Norway striker Carew grabbed the only goal of the game in the 34th minute when he turned in an Ashley Young cross from close range. There was a suspicion of offside regarding Carew’s 14th goal of the season but the forward said: “It was very good, the referee made the right decision. “I wasn’t sure but it was good to see it wasn’t offside. “It was a brilliant ball, I just had to put my foot on it.” Hull manager Phil Brown refused to be downcast and believes his team – who have been in freefall for several months now – can avoid relegation.

Aston Villa’s John Carew shoots to score a 1-0 victory against Hull. “We deserved something from the game, no doubt about it and if we get the same effort on Saturday, Stoke have got a game on their hands,” said Brown. “I can’t fault the players commitment in the second-half.” Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill made several fine saves to deny Villa, who fielded eight England players as England boss Fabio Capello looked on, a more emphatic victory, including a fine point-blank stop from Gabriel Agbonlahor. The Tigers rarely threatened as the hosts won at Villa Park for the first time in the Premier League since midJanuary, a run which helped cost them a top four finish and a Champions League spot.

IT WAS VERY GOOD, THE REFEREE MADE THE RIGHT DECISION. I WASN’T SURE BUT IT WAS GOOD TO SEE IT WASN’T OFFSIDE. John Carew on his 14th goal of the season, which many thought was offside.

‘Juve to fire Ranieri’ Reports in yesterday’s Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Claudio Ranieri’s tenure at Juventus is close to an end. Juve have not won in five matches and look set to miss out on second place in Serie A having fallen four points behind AC Milan in the quest for that position. Ranieri’s job has long come under speculation but Gazzetta now claim that he will definitely be fired at the end of the season and maybe even sooner if Juve lose to Milan at the weekend. Juve themselves have constantly repeated that Ranieri’s job is safe, while the former Chelsea boss is contracted until the end of next season.

Manchester United have offered Bayern Munich 70 million euros for French midfielder Franck Ribery, in a deal which would set a new world record, the Guardian newspaper reported yesterday. The offer, which would better the 66 million euros transfer fee paid by Real Madrid for Zinedine Zidane in 2001, would be conditional on the sale of United winger Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, it said. The report came after Ribery last week threatened to quit the German giants unless they qualify for the Champions League next season, as the defending Bundesliga champions struggle to defend their title. The German club, which has long ruled out letting Ribery go, last weekend hinted it could sell the 26-year-old former Marseille star, who has been at Bayern since July 2007. But the clubs reported as possible new homes have so far been Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Barton suspended Joey Barton has been suspended “until further notice” by Newcastle United in a move that looks set to signal the end to the midfielder’s career at the club. Shearer had publicly accused Barton of letting himself and the club down by getting himself sent off in the closing stages of the match for a reckless challenge on Xabi Alonso.

Didier Deschamps will take over from Eric Gerets.

rance World Cup hero Didier Deschamps is to take over from Eric Gerets as manager of Marseille next season, the club announced on its website yesterday. The Belgian has guided the southern giants this season to within striking distance of their first league title since 1992, but he made it clear to his players last week that he would leave no matter what.

Deschamps, who skippered France to the World Cup title in 1998, has previously been coach at Monaco and Juventus. He will take over from Gerets in June. A club statement said that Deschamps had agreed to a two-year deal after chairman Pape Diouf and majority shareholder Robert Louis-Dreyfus had decided he was the man they wanted to replace the popular Gerets. “The choice of Didier

Deschamps, whose career both as a player and a coach prove his merits, was a natural one to make,” the statement said. What mattered now, it continued, was to concentrate totally on winning the league title and that Gerets would have full powers to achieve that goal despite his decision to leave, With four games to go until the end of the season, Marseille are level at the top with Bordeaux. Both clubs have 68

points with Marseille having scored one goal more.

Le Guen to stand down Paul Le Guen will stand down as coach of Paris St Germain when his contract expires at the end of this season. Le Guen’s fate was sealed after a stormy meeting he had with club chairman Sebastien Bazin who told him that he would no longer have the final say in transfers and coaching staff.

Boycott backs Australia to retain Ashes AFP, London

G

eoff Boycott has backed the new-look Australian team to retain the Ashes in England this summer. The batting legend believes the knock-on effects of a turbulent year off the field and the shortcomings of Andrew Strauss as a captain mean the best England can hope for is to draw the series. “England are not in great shape,” Boycott said in an interview with the BBC’s Inside Sport programme. “Can they win the Ashes? No, I think they will draw if anything, and the Australians will retain them.” The 68-year-old added: “There was the fiasco over Kevin Pietersen, the fiasco over Allen Stanford and his millions,

Ex-England opener Geoff Boycott says Andrew Strauss is not a natural captain. they’ve tried three or four guys as captain. “Now they’ve got Andrew Strauss who is quite a nice lad – he will do a decent job – but I’m not convinced he is a natural captain. “It’s a gift, to look after 10 oth-

er people and also to still look after your own game and play well, and at the same time be thinking two steps ahead of the game. “When you’re captain you can’t just wait for things to happen. The great captains are

thinking ahead.” Reflecting on the vexed number three slot, Boycott added: “If you look at the number three position, we have tried Ian Bell and Owais Shah, they’re still talking about bringing Michael Vaughan back, and now are trying Ravi Bopara. That is just one position. I don’t feel we’re getting the best out what we’ve got. Never mind shooting themselves in the foot, England have shot themselves in the head this winter.” England begin their build-up to the Ashes with the first of two Tests against the West Indies from tomorrow at Lord’s. The first Test against Australia is at Cardiff on July 8. Meanwhile, Left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati picked up 4-22 as Chennai Super Kings thumped Deccan Chargers by 78 runs for their third win on the trot in the Indian Premier League on Monday.

he Indian Premier League (IPL) threatens to play a major role in the Test campaign between England and the West Indies even before a ball is bowled in today’s series opener here at Lord’s. West Indies captain Chris Gayle only arrived in England following his IPL stint in South Africa in the early hours of Monday morning. On his day, opening batsman Gayle can blast a big score against any attack. But West Indies coach John Dyson is unhappy the lefthander has given himself so little time to acclimatise to local conditions. “Chris is a bigmatch player. He says he’s in good touch, seeing the ball well. “But medical science says that everyone gets jet-lag. If your flying time is 10, 12 hours you probably need a couple of days to recover properly.”

Sleepy Magic edge Celtics, Rockets surprise Lakers DPA, Los Angeles

T

he Orlando Magic blew out of the gate, but nearly blew the game late. Dwight Howard collected 16 points with 22 rebounds, JJReddick sank four free throws in the final 13 seconds and the Magic survived a late charge to beat the Boston Celtics 95-90 in the opener of the Eastern Conference semi-finals. “The last 16 minutes was a debacle,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “We were sort of trying to run out the clock, and you can’t do that in games like this. Especially in the play-offs, teams are going to keep fighting and keep coming back. “You play these games to win, and that’s it. We won. Right now, the series is 1-0.” Boston again hosts Game

Two tomorrow. Rashard Lewis scored 18 points, Frenchman Mikael Pietrus had 17 and Turkish native Hedo Turkoglu chipped in with 15 for Orlando, who nearly blew a 28-point third-quarter cushion. “We just have to learn how to keep a lead and win,” Lewis said. “But at the end of the day it’s still a victory whether you win by one or you win by 20.” Orlando finished the first half on a 26-6 run to go up 54-37 at the break. An 11-1 burst at the start of the third period pushed the lead to 65-37 with just three minutes gone. But the Magic went flat and the defending NBA champions Celtics stiffened their defensive intensity to storm within 91-87 on two free throws by Paul Pierce with 1:36 remaining. “We got complacent as a team, stopped doing what we did to get the lead and against a good Celtics team you can’t do

that,” Howard said. “I’m not happy with the way we ended the game. That’s not Magic basketball.” After empty possessions by both clubs, the Celtics missed an opportunity to close to within a basket, when Howard forced Pierce into missing a driving lay-up with 13.6 seconds left. On the ensuing play, the Celtics fouled Reddick, who made both foul shots, giving the Magic a 93-87 advantage. Pierce nailed a three-pointer with 6.6 ticks remaining, but Reddick made two more from the stripe to seal the victory. “We can’t wait until we’re down 25, 26 points to wake up,” Pierce said. “There’s no excuses for us not to be ready. “It’s like a boxing match and you get hit with a hook and an upper cut, then you decide to fight. We can’t do that. We have to take the fight to them from the start.”

COURT NAPPING

Orlando Magic centre Dwight Howard, left, fouls Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo in the fourth quarter. In another game, it was Houston Rockets 100, LA Lakers 92. Chinese superstar Yao Ming had 28 points, 10 rebounds and the Rockets surprised the Lakers to grab the opener of their Western Conference semi-finals play-off series. “We’re hungry to win, particularly the first game,” Yao said. “We respect them to come back strong in Game Two, but tonight we really played a strong defence.”

The Lakers host Game Two tomorrow. Ron Artest added 21 points and Aaron Brooks had 19 for the Rockets, who led virtually the entire game to steal home-court edge away from the top seeds. “I can’t say enough about our team attitude,” said Rockets coach Rick Adelman, whose club was swept 4-0 in the regular-season by the Lakers. “Our guys were very determined.” Kobe Bryant scored 32 points for the Lakers.
