woman found guilty of masterminding her husband’s murder in order to pick up Bt2 million in insurance money was sentenced to death by the Criminal Court yesterday. The four men who carried out the murder each got 25 years in jail. Last April, Khai Suksamphan hired Manote Phumthavorn to kill her ex-husband Sawaeng Boonmee, a 56-year-old foreman at the Shino-Thai construction company.

Lured out, stabbed Sawaeng was lured out on a date by Oranuch Lahchan then beaten and stabbed by Manote and his three accomplices in Bang Kapi district. They stole his cellphone and Bt15,000 cash. They then ran Sawaeng over with a taxi in an attempt to pass off the murder as a road accident. Considering evidence including testimony from the driver who took the four men to Sukhothai to get their payment of Bt300,000 from Khai and an insurance firm employee who said Khai bought the victim life insurance just prior to the incident, the court ruled that Khai and the four men were guilty as charged.

When her husband shot her five years ago, Connie Culp was left without a nose, a palate or lower eyelids, but on Tuesday she revealed her new face. Culp’s was the world’s first near-total facial transplant and the fourth known facial transplant to have been successfully performed to date. The 46-year-old mother of two underwent a procedure last December that lasted 22 hours at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Surgeons transplanted about 80 per cent of Culp’s face using facial tissue from a dead woman that was placed like a mask atop her own. Almost her entire face was replaced, except for the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip and chin. The team of 11 surgeons who performed the operation said Culp, who was missing bone support and had been unable to eat or breathe without a tube in her windpipe, could now perform functions normally. But her face was bloated, drooping and her speech was at times difficult to decipher. Her husband, Thomas, had shot her at point-blank range before turning the gun on himself. The apparent murder-suicide attempt failed and he was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Briton named to look after a tropical island off Australia said yesterday he wanted to continue his charity work, inspired by a friend who died in the tsunami of 2004. Ben Southall, 34, said he was pinching himself after being named caretaker of Hamilton Island on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, beating more than 34,000 applicants for the coveted position. “I really didn’t think I stood a chance, to be honest,” he said after being selected from 16 finalists from around the world. “There were some great people there and I was very, very surprised when my name was called out at the end.”

Southall, who will live in a luxury three-bedroom beach house, will spend six months swimming, snorkelling and sailing around the tropical paradise, earning A$150,000 (Bt3.7 million) for blogging about his experiences and promoting the region to the world.

Diving into a freezing lake Southall, who dived into a freezing British lake in his video application for the job, said it also involved hard work generating promotional ideas, and he remained committed to charity work. “I’ve done lots of work for charity. I’d like to continue that,” he said. “One of the charities I regu-

larly raise money for is Char’s Fund, which is a tiny little one that was set up after a very good friend of mine died in the Asian tsunami.” Char’s Fund is a memorial to Charlotte Jones, a 23-year-old who died on the Thai island of Ko Racha Yai in the tsunami. After snaring the so-called “Best Job in the World”, Southall laughed as he recounted his worst job, as a teenager in Hampshire, southern England. “When I was 13 to 15 years old I worked as a fishmonger,” he said. He said the selection process on Hamilton Island was “surreal”. “I want to set myself challenges, learn to sail properly, get out there and get my next PADI [diving certification],” he said.

A homeless South Korean unable to withdraw his life savings because he could not remember his real name has died in poverty. The man, believed to be aged 56, died of cancer last month, leaving 128 million won (just over US$100,000 or Bt3.5 million) in a bank account that was opened in early 1993 under the alias of Na Hae-Dong. The account was frozen several months later when a law took effect to ban accounts held under false names, as an anti-corruption measure. Deposits were still allowed but the account holder had to register a real name to withdraw money, something “Na” could not do. The man collected scrap iron and other junk and slept on his cart under plastic sheets before moving in 2007 into a makeshift shelter made from a shipping container. – AFP

BEAMING BACK ABOARD The classic sci-fi adventure ‘Star Trek’ boldly goes again, with an unwritten future By David Germain

They have Leonard Nimoy, and they have all the trappings, gadgets and crew members of the starship Enterprise. Yet even for a franchise that grew to six TV series and 10 previous movies, JJ Abrams’ “Star Trek” is the wildest makeover ever to Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a future where humans have overcome their own squabbles and set out to make new enemies among the stars. Everything that came before in the “Trek” universe used Roddenberry’s 1960s series as a launch point, so subsequent movies and shows formed a generally consistent history of the 21st to 24th centuries. Using a tried-and-true “Trek” trick – the alternate reality – Abrams and company found a way to give Captain James Kirk, First Officer Spock and their pals a new beginning and wide-open future. “The key to this movie was to be inspired by, embrace and honour everything that’s come before, but with the first scene in the movie, we say we are going somewhere else,” Abrams declares. The filmmakers have sleekly updated the sets, costumes, props and effects. But fans will recognise the overall look, from the silhouette of the Enterprise to the gold, blue and red uniforms that are a throwback to the quaint outfits

,, Director JJ Abrams, in command on the bridge, says the new ‘Star Trek’ seeks to honour the series’ past while also taking it to a new level. Nimoy, William Shatner and their costars wore.

New faces, old names Among the new faces, including Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, fans will recognise a key player from the classic “Trek”. Nimoy returns as the older Spock, pursued through time by a vengeful Romulan

(Eric Bana) aiming to wipe out the human-led Federation. Abrams, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and their collaborators hit on an intelligent design to resuscitate the franchise, Nimoy says. The last movie, 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis”, was a flop, and the prequel series “Enterprise” was cancelled in 2005 amid dwindling ratings. Nimoy thinks the franchise is back where it was in 1982, when “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” provided a creative makeover after “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” proved visually dazzling but dramatically sterile. A day after he saw the new movie, the son of “Star Trek” creator Roddenberry said it did what it should do – broaden the appeal while staying true to his father’s vision. Hard-core fans might object, but “they are a slice of the pie,” said Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, whose mother, Majel Barrett, had recurring roles in “Trek”. “You have to strike a balance, and I think

TV host Tripop “Toi” Limprapat made his Channel 3 comeback on Monday with the return of “The Tonight Show”. He’d jumped over to iTV in 1996. It was a good Toi comeback, too: watching some plastic surgery being done in South Korea and getting actor Willie McIntosh to show viewers his home for the first time. Both segments were left unfinished, however – tune in again next Monday. The deal this time is that Toi’s only got an hour-long show, though he’s expecting an extra 30 minutes starting next month. But that’s still a far cry from his heyday, when he had the luxury of three hours per episode. Hey, times are tough all over!

Toy story A leading filmmaker reveals a passion for Astro Boy and other Japanese comic book figures By Parinyaporn Pajee D A I LY X P R E S S

A

quick glance around filmmaker Yongyooth Thongkongtoon’s office is enough to reveal that the noted director and producer does indeed have a penchant for collecting – toys of various shapes and sizes are perched on most of the shelves. But ask him what kind of toys he prefers, and Yongyooth is stumped, though he readily admits that he now owns more than 1,000 items and that much of his collection is kept at his home. It’s not so much about collecting, he explains, but more about revisiting childhood memories. “There was never any money for toys when I was young, so when I started working, I kept shelling out for them. It started as a kind of

vengeance – a payback for poverty,” says the director with a smile. However, he admits that the rationale never really made sense, chuckling as he recalls sending a messenger to McDonalds each time the burger chain released a new series of Happy Meal toys. “Now I have 20 drawers filled with Happy Meal collections and I never play with them.” He doesn’t regret collecting the toys, though. “For the price, the [Happy Meal] collections are of high quality. When you piece them together, the joints fit well too,” he says. His fondest childhood memories are of Japanese comic book figures and the Kamen Raiders, so many of the toys in his collection are

Japanese gizmos. A particular favourite is Astro Boy. “I wasn’t a big fan of the Astro Boy comic but I like the character. It’s one of my best childhood memories,” he says. “I’ve also bought the Ultra Seven Kamen riders because the characters and I were born the same year.” Another prized possession is a TOMY train set.

“I love playing with toys that actually do something and now, when I have free time, I can share these pleasures with my daughter,” says the director. Other models are, as one might expect, film-related, with items from “Lost”, “24” and “Star Wars”. He stocks up when he visits Japan, spending his free time wandering around the toyshops in Harajuku and Akiharbara. “Strolling around Akihabara tends to stress me out as I get the urge to buy everything. The only way I can save money is by staying away from the area,” he says. But he is not an extreme collector and doesn’t lay out serious money for his toys. His most expensive purchase is Bt5,000 – the price he paid for his favourite Astro Boy model.

f you’re overweight and have decided to work out regularly, it may be wise to see a doctor before you cough up for a gym membership. If you don’t have that much weight to lose, are relatively young, don’t have a disability and are in overall good health, you probably can safely skip a health check. But if you’re severely overweight or have diabetes or a family history of heart disease, you should check in with a doctor before getting that heart rate too high. A trip to a general practitioner probably will result in tests of cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure and blood sugar – all linked to heart health, a key component of exercise. If the numbers are out of the normal range, medication might be in order. The ultimate goal is to manage conditions with exercise and diet, eventually lowering or getting off medication altogether. A doctor might recommend mild to moderate workouts if your numbers aren’t in a danger zone, but he or she also might want to stabilise some conditions before letting you lace up your sneakers. To be

ately and seek medical care. Once you’re at the clinic of hospital, you don’t need to request every test under the sun. A doctor is likely to start with the basics: checking cholesterol and triglyceride levels, measuring blood pressure and body fat, and testing for diabetes. More serious tests, such as a cardiac stress test

SERIOUS TESTS, SUCH AS A CARDIAC STRESS TEST DONE ON A TREADMILL, WILL ONLY BE PRESCRIBED IF CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE IS SUSPECTED.

The muscle and tendons work together as units. Injuries can affect muscle belly, muscle-tendon junction, the tendon itself, and the insertion of the tendon to the bone. Muscles can be damaged both by direct trauma (impact) and by indirect trauma (overloading). Muscle in-

juries are usually benign but often annoying and inadequate treatment can result in a long absence from any sporting activity. Strain is caused by over-stretching of muscles or tendons. Contusions occur as result of direct impact, such as when a player’s knee hits another’s thigh during a soccer game. When injuries occur, there is inevitably some degree of bleeding followed by pain and then the inflammatory process. A sharp or stabbing pain is felt when the injured muscle-

tendon contract. Usually there is little pain providing the muscle is rested. After 24 hours, bruising and discoloration may be seen (a sign of bleeding in the injured muscles). The initial treatment is rest, bandaging the injured part, cooling the affected area with ice, elevating the limb and relieving the load on the injured part. This should be done within the first 24 to 72 hours. Muscle exercises should only commence after at least two but preferably five days of rest.

A half-century from stand-in skipper Gautam Gambhir led Delhi Daredevils to the top of the Indian Premier League table with a nine-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday. Gambhir’s measured innings of 71 not out eased Delhi to their target of 155 with one over to spare, David Warner’s quickfire innings of 36 from 23 deliveries got the Gambhir Daredevils off to a flying start and eased the pressure on his team-mates. – AFP

Tiger is back, but without the same power as before AP, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

S

o much about Tiger Woods after major knee surgery looks the same. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a birdie putt on the last hole that everyone knew he was going to make. Even when his swing was out of sorts last week at Quail Hollow, he somehow was in the thick of contention until the final two holes. But this is not the same Tiger Woods. He is missing his power, whether it’s off the tee with a driver or from the fairway with irons that are sometimes two more clubs than what he used before surgery last June to rebuild his left knee. The power shortage was never more evident than the final round of the Masters, playing with Phil Mickelson, when Woods usually was the first to hit from the fairway. Even his rival couldn’t help but notice. “I kept having to wait for him to hit,” Mickelson

jokingly said yesterday. That wasn’t the case the last time they played together at Augusta National, the final round in 2001, when on some holes Woods hit it farther with a 3-wood than Mickelson did with a driver. More evidence came last week at Quail Hollow. By measuring drives on the 56 holes that were not par 3s, Mickelson’s average tee shot was nearly 14 yards longer than Woods’. Statistics can be misleading, especially over the first two rounds because they played on opposite ends of the draw. But in the third round, when they were separated by one group, Mickelson was longer off the tee on 11 of the 14 driving holes. Mickelson’s average drive was 317.6 yards, Woods was at 300.5 yards. Woods has an answer for his sudden loss of length. “I’ve been away from the game for a long time,” he said on Tuesday, referring to his eight-month layoff after the US Open. “And it’s going to take a little bit of time before my body gets back to where I can hit the ball the same distances. I don’t hit the ball the same distance

with my irons or my driver.” What he doesn’t have an answer for is when he will get it back. “Hopefully, soon,” he said. Woods said at Quail Hollow that he was just starting to get some “pop” back in the swing, which had been missing earlier. He spoke about the rotation required to generate speed in his swing, and the importance of not stretching the ligament. Is Tiger shorter? Or is Phil longer? Mickelson has always been more infatuated with length than Woods, although Woods’ aura has been built around power. Woods is having to make do with less at the moment, which is OK with him. He has been experimenting with different shafts and lengths of his driver, although he keeps going back to what he had. The Players Championship will be the fourth straight tournament that Mickelson has a chance to replace Woods at No 1 in the world ranking. Mickelson would have to win and have Woods finish worse than fourth place alone for that to happen.

‘Distraught’ Fletcher to miss final

MAN U BURN BRIGHT

Uefa yesterday ruled out

Ferguson hails his team’s return to red-hot form in 3-1 win over Arsenal AFP, London

lex Ferguson believes Manchester United are hitting peak form at just the right time to extend their reign as champions of Europe. Ferguson’s side swept into the Champions League final for the second successive season with a ruthless 3-1 victory over Arsenal in Tuesday’s semi-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium. United are just 90 minutes away from becoming the first team in the Champions League era to successfully defend Europe’s top club prize. Victory in Rome against Chelsea or Barcelona on May 27 would be the culmination of a campaign that has already included Club World Cup and League Cup triumphs and is likely to feature a third consecutive Premier League crown. But Ferguson knows the potentially glorious finale could have been so different if United hadn’t bounced back from defeats to Liverpool and Fulham. “We had a blip when we lost to Liverpool and Fulham and we got a break against Aston Villa when we won in the last minute but since then the form has been back,” Ferguson said. “I think we are at our strongest at the moment. You have to remember that the team has just been put together the last two or three years, it doesn’t happen overnight. ““Good players will always be judged by the belief they have. What was good for me was that

United would join Bayern Munich and Ajax on four European Cups if they win this year’s competition and Ferguson believes his players have the desire to do it. “From the club’s point of view, we should have won this cup more times and it’s another opportunity for us,” Ferguson said. “Hopefully we can do it

again. We have the quality, energy and ambition to do it again and it’s a hungry team. When the chips are down, they don’t let me down.” While Ferguson savoured one of his greatest European victories, he also found time to console Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger – for so long a bitter rival of the United boss but now a much closer friend. Ferguson said: “I know exactly how he feels. When you work as hard as he does he deserves success. “The problem for Arsene Wenger and myself is that the longer you are in the game the more labels are attached to you. If you are not winning you are useless, if you are winning you’re great.”

a reprieve for Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher over the red card that means he will be suspended for the Champions League final. Fletcher was sent off in United’s 3-1 win over Arsenal on Tuesday for a challenge on Cesc Fabregas inside the penalty box. Television replays showed that the United player had played the ball before Fabregas tumbled over him. But even if referee Roberto Rosetti accepts he made a mistake, Uefa’s rules allow for red cards to be rescinded only if the official acknowledges that he punished the wrong player, a spokesman for European football’s governing body confirmed. “A club can file a protest against a caution or a sending off but under our rules it is only admissible if there is a case of mistaken identity by the referee,” he said. Ferguson admitted he felt for his compatriot. “Darren is disappointed and he should be disappointed,” Ferguson said. “He’s one of the most honest players in the game and to miss the final, it’s a tragedy. He was distraught.” Fletcher was consoled after the match by Paul Scholes, who, along with Roy Keane, missed United’s victory over Bayern Munich in the 1999 final because of suspension. AFP

rsenal manager Arsene Wenger has described his side’s 3-1 defeat by Manchester United in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal as the worst of his career. Arsenal were humbled at home by the holders on Tuesday night with two goals inside the first 11 minutes as United cruised to a 4-1 aggregate victory. Their exit means for the fourth season in a row,

Arsenal will be without a trophy. “It [was] the most disappointing night of my career,” Wenger said. “I felt the fans were really up for a big night and to disappoint people who stand behind the team so much hurts.” “The most difficult thing is that we do not have a feeling that we played a semi-final of the Champions League. “We were out of it after 10 minutes and we had 80 min-

utes to play against a team who defend well and wait to counter-attack. We were in a position where we had to take all the gamble after having started quite well. “I must say we can only look at ourselves. It is very disappointing to fight to get such a long way and to give the game away like we did.” Mistakes from Kieran Gibbs and Manuel Almunia gave United their 2-0 lead but

Wenger said his side should take collective responsibility. “We do not want to blame anyone individually,” he said. “In three minutes we conceded two goals and it was too much. “We were ready for a fight and the game but after 10 minutes it was impossible. We kept going and we did as much as we could. We played with pride and desire but of course some part of the belief had gone.”

But we came out and continued the momentum from the Detroit series.” Elsewhere it was Denver Nuggets 117, Dallas Maverick 105. Carmelo Anthony poured in 15 of his 25 points in the decisive final quarter, and the Nuggets ran away from the Mavericks to take a 2-0 advantage in their Western Conference play-off series. “We didn’t come in thinking we were going to blow the Mavericks out,” Anthony said. “We wanted to play hard, we

wanted to play defence. In the fourth quarter, we made some shots, got some stops and got in the open court.” Denver carried an 86-83 edge into the fourth quarter before blowing the game open. Anthony had 10 points to key a game-sealing 16-2 run to start the period, giving the Nuggets a commanding 102-85 cushion before coasting home. “I think we wore them down in the fourth quarter,” said Denver guard Chauncey Billups, who chipped in with 18 points. “We took off and exploded.” Brazil’s Nene also scored 25, JR Smith had 21 for Denver, who outscored their guests 3122 in the fourth quarter.

Citing an anonymous source “with direct knowledge of the discussions between the two parties,” ESPN reported yesterday that Favre is scheduled to meet with Vikings coach Brad Childress this week about a possible comeback. Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, did not immediately return a phone call to his Mississippi office left by the Associated Press. Ex-Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre may go to Minnesota. Favre’s statement after he was released by the New York Jets last week left the door open. “At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football,” he said. Those three little words – “At

this time” – set off rampant speculation that he was indeed considering a second return to action. Childress said on Friday he had been too busy to concentrate on Favre, but did ac-

knowledge the subject would soon be broached. Favre spent 16 seasons in Green Bay, retiring in 2008 after leading the Packers to the NFC title game. He changed his mind a few months later, which set up a long and messy soap opera that ultimately led to his trade to the Jets. It was believed all along that Favre, after hearing Green Bay’s plans to go with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, wanted to come to NFC North rival Minnesota so he could exact some revenge on the Packers. But the Packers would have none of it. The team filed tampering charges against the Vikings, alleging improper contact between Favre and Vikings’ Darrell Bevell, a friend of Favre.

THESPORT A worried Tamarine Tanasugarn confined herself to her hotel room in Madrid all day while Danai Udomchoke got himself quarantined as Thai athletes remain on high alert against the swine flu pandemic. After her flight landed in the Spanish capital on Tuesday, Tamarine, who will kick off her European clay court season next week, had to undergo strict protective measures against the deadly outbreak of the virus, and was told to remain in the hotel. “I’ve been advised not to go into the city. I spent the entire day [Tuesday] in the hotel. This is very scary,’’ said Tamarine, who finally got on to court yesterday for much-needed practice on the surface before the tournament starts on Monday. “Had I known there was a vaccine, I would have taken the shots before I left Bangkok,’’ said Tamarine who bought a face mask and started taking vitamin C as precautionary measures. In Bangkok, Danai along with Sanchai Ratiwatana got themselves vaccinated at Samitivej Hospital yesterday before flying to Busan on Friday for a Challenger event. “The vaccine [Oseltamivir] is for common flu but it’s better than doing nothing. As I have to travel constantly, it’s safer and better to have some sort of a protection,’’ said Thai No 1 Danai, whose schedule this season includes trips to the United States and England. Sanchai and his brother Sonchat had been in Mexico for tournaments but were lucky to leave a few weeks before the outbreak. “My family advised me to get vaccinated because we have to play in the US and regulations are very strict there at the moment,’’ said Sanchai whose brother Sonchat will get himself vaccinated on Friday. Pro golfer Thongchai Jaidee was the first Thai athlete to get the anti-influenza vaccination. He took the injection at the Vipavadee Hospital last Friday before leaving for the Player Championships in America.
