urveillance cameras will be installed at another 30 intersections in Bangkok, after the existing system had proved effective, a senior police officer said yesterday. The 30 new cameras will support the existing 30 in tackling the problem of motorists running red lights, said Pol MajGeneral Phanu Kerdlarpphol.

TAXI DRIVERS TOP THE VIOLATORS’LIST. The cameras snapped 120,000 violations in January, their first month of use, but that figure had dropped sharply to 70,000 by last month. Taxi drivers topped the violators’ list in every one of the four months, the officer said, adding that tickets and photographic evidence were now being mailed to red-light-runners’ homes just one day after the crimes were recorded. A total of 183,303 tickets have been sent out, and 51,221 Bt500 fines have so far been paid, either in person at police stations or through the post. DAILY

WINNING THE WAR GAME A combat-exercise system made in Thailand could soon be shooting round the world D A I LY X P R E S S

W

ith the help of Kasetsart University and Thailand Science Park, a local company has produced a war-game exercise system which costs half the price of its overseas-made counterparts. Phanwes Sukhawanich, managing director of Sci-ARMS, says the design of the RAIDZ system was based on technical flaws used by police and the military in other countries but improved to outperform those more expensive rivals. Three years in development, RAIDZ comprises a central control system, individual kits

for each soldier and replica assault rifles that can fire pellets or laser beams. Whatever the exercise – a shootout, a hostage rescue or an ambush – soldiers who are shot are electronically marked “dead” and terminated from the practice. Phanwes says the RAIDZ system is an improvement on current technology because it can process exercise results and evaluate the participants immediately after the completion of each drill, through the central control system. Other systems can do so only after details are retrieved from the soldiers’ kits and later processed in a separate computer system, he explained.

‘Fatal injuries’ Each kit comprises a vest, a helmet and a display monitor to show “injury conditions” – whether the soldier wearing it

has sustained enough injury from enemy fire to be considered dead. Sensors attached to the helmet and vest detect laser beams fired from assault rifles, both enemy and friendly fire. According to Phanwes, trainees can’t “cheat death” because their life status is controlled by the central system. They can, however, be “brought to life” if a referee shoots them with a new set of data. The laser beam is low frequency and not harmful to the eyes and each vest has 18 hours of battery life. Phaladej Chaloeykitti, a senior Thailand Science Park official, says the RAIDZ system should be further developed then exported to other countries. He commented that it has the potential to become the pride of Thailand overseas but could also prove very useful to the police and military here.

wealthy estate developer was killed yesterday at his luxury Bangkok home by an intruder. Police have arrested a man they say confessed to committing the murder in a fit of rage after the victim refused to pay a debt. Police say Wanchai Jaytay, 44, was arrested in Sukhumvit Soi 13, making his escape from the home of Anant Singjirakul, the 38-year-old victim and owner of Samirano Property.

Getaway victims He injured two female employees of the firm during the getaway, pistolwhipping one in the face and wounding another with a knife, police added. Lumpini police say Wanchai claims he was owed nearly Bt2 million after Anant hired him to source scented hardwoods. He first threatened the victim then slashed his throat when he started to fight back. Police found a loaded revolver and a switchblade on the suspect, who has been charged with premeditated murder, assault and possession of a firearm. Wanchai’s claim that he acted alone is being investigated after police found an SMS on his mobile phone that read “Is it done?”.

Singer Boy George freed early from jail in Britain British pop singer Boy George has been released from prison early after being jailed for attacking a male escort with a metal chain, it was reported yesterday. The 47-year-old singer left Edmunds Hill prison in Suffolk, southeast Britain, on Monday. He had been sentenced to 15 months in January for attacking Audun Carlsen, a Norwegian man, after imprisoning and handcuffing him at the singer’s London home. oliticians and climate experts predicted dreary effects of climate change on the world’s oceans at an international conference on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island. The state of the oceans and the role they play in the world’s changing climate must be a central issue in the negotiations on a new global climate pact, participants at the World Ocean Conference said. The oceans absorb 22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), a main greenhouse gas, per day, said Richard Spinrad, the head of the US oceanographic authority NOAA. They store 38,000 gigatons

of CO2, which is 50 times as much as the atmosphere holds.

5,000 attend conference More than 5,000 climatologists, ocean experts, government representatives and environmentalists from 80 nations are discussing the effects of climate change on the world’s oceans at the Sulawesi conference, which runs until Friday. They plan to pass a “Manado Declaration”, which should find its way into the UN climate talks in Copenhagen in December. According to Spinrad, rising sea levels of more than one

metre over the next 100 years cannot be ruled out. “Sea-level rises have accelerated over the past years,” Spinrad said. The regions affected by the rise are home to 150 million people. The ocean’s acidity levels also increased by 30 per cent due to the higher CO2 content. Nineteen per cent of the world’s coral reefs have already been destroyed, said Gabriele Goettsche-Wanli of the United Nations’ ocean bureau in New York. Another 15 per cent are in danger of dying by 2020. “It is clear that our precious marine resources are under dire and increasing threat and that in many parts of the world climate change will accelerate their destruction,” said Indonesia's Minister of Fisheries Freddy Numberi.

he past few months have passed in a whirl for singer Maleewan “Mint” Jimena who, after 23 years in the music business, has decided to take an indefinite break and devote her time to “something more conducive to society”. “I’ve been in the music circle all my adult life,” says the 47year-old songbird. “The entertainment business has been good to me and singing is my life. But the time has come to give something back.” The pop veteran is leaving her legions of fans with a new album – her 24th – and says “Sensation” will be in the stores next month. It features 10 songs, including the alreadyreleased singles “Jeb Dai Rong Hai Pen” written by Tuk Nonthawan and “Mai Khoei Mai Jam” by Nitipong “Dee” Hornak. “My album will only be on sale after five songs have been released,” she says. “That’s today’s way of handling promotion. It enables downloads while protecting against piracy. “Some fans have told me that my style has changed, but I don’t think that’s true. If my voice sounds different, it’s because of the emotion I’m putting into the songs.” “Sensation” is being released on new label A-Time Media, whih picked Mint as its first artist. “That came about after last year’s two hugely successful

concerts, ‘Seven Divas’ and ‘The Singer’. That last concert was really an attempt to relaunch my career and it was only after that that I realised it was time to stop.”

Meditating musician Maleewan is involved with several philanthropic organisations and is a serious practitioner of meditation, often going on retreats lasting up to 15 days. She took it up a few years ago, she says, after suffering from stressed vocal chords and severe eye strain. “If we don’t know how to solve our problems, we often resort to ugly behaviour and bad words. For me, meditation brings peace and happiness and helps me face problems in my daily life,” she says. Mint intends to focus much of her energies on working with the Phra Dabos Foundation, which assists underprivileged children.

Roots Flo Rida (Atlantic) The Miami rapper is already make waves with “Right Round”, the first single off this, his second album. “Roots”, which is an acronym for “Route of Overcoming the Struggle”, has already gone double platinum and is reportedly the fastest million-selling download in the US. What impressed me the most a about “Roots” was the number of rap artists that have apparently lined up to contribute – the names range from Ne-Yo to Nelly Furtado. The second single is “Shone” and features fellow Miami artist Pleasure P. “Sugar”, featuring Wynter Gordon, samples Eiffel 65’s techno hit “Blue (Da Ba Dee)”. On “Available”, he teams up Akon. All in all, a wellrounded collection of songs.

All the Plans Starsailor (Virgin) For their fourth album, English pop-rockers Starsailor focus more on pop melodies and simple arrangements, resulting in a more energetic and soulful outing that really suits frontman James Walsh’s trembling voice. Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood appears on the title track. Opener “Tell Me It’s Not Over” makes for a good start and leads well into “The Thames”, a pleasant country-rock number enhanced by acoustic guitar and Hammond organ. “Stars and Stripes” has a Nashville sound, “Change My Mind” is all bluesy piano and “Neon Sky” has an airy piano vibe.

Bass that breaks

It's a style of music which is constantly evolving there’s loads of new talent coming through to keep things interesting... so I guess that means no!

Y

oung Andrew Clarke, as he’s known to his parents, burst onto the club circuit when he was a 14-yearold lad and has never looked back. The Essex native specialises in mixing old-school drumand-bass with newer tunes and though he’s yet to release an artist album, his extensive list of remixes, including the compilation series “Nightlife”, have made him one of very few globally successful drumand-bass DJs. We caught up with him just before he boarded the plane for Bangkok.

What are you working on now? I’m looking to get back into the studio a lot more this year. It's been a while but I’m really excited about making some new music.

Who's the latest producer you’ve signed to RAM Records? We signed Chase & Status a little while ago and they have blown up in a huge way. Their track “Eastern Jam”, was recently picked up by Snoop Doggy Dogg.

Your fans here are excited. What’s the plan? Lots of great new music! I am really looking forward to the gig – it will be my first time playing in Bangkok!

What kind of music did you listen to when you are growing up? I grew up at a time when the whole underground dance scene was really kicking off in the UK. Tracks such as “Voodoo Ray” by A Guy Called Gerald gave me the rave bug!

And drum and bass? There’s so much variety within drum-and-bass and the energy is fantastic. The atmosphere at a good drum-and-bass party is absolutely unbeatable.

ubens Barrichello told Ross Brawn he would quit and “go home” if the team favoured team-mate Jenson Button at the Spanish Grand Prix. In an interview with a Brazilian radio station just before leaving the track on Sunday, Barrichello said he met with Brawn GP’s owner and made it clear he would not accept being relegated to a secondary role. “I got to the pits and I told Ross Brawn that if he did anything to let Jenson win the race, I would hang up my boots and go home,” Barrichello told Radio Jovem Pan. “I don’t need this, I’m better than this.” Barrichello said the team owed him an explanation for a change in strategy that apparently cost him the race in favour of the Briton. “Brawn was clear,” Barrichello said. “He said Button’s victory was a coincidence.” Barrichello, who spent much

The team did not change the Brazilian’s strategy and he was eventually overtaken by Button and finished second. Brawn said the team changed Button’s strategy to keep him ahead of the rest of the pack, not to overhaul Barrichello. “I don’t know if that makes sense or not,” Barrichello said.

“But the race was mine. I started ahead and had more fuel, there is no way I could lose.” Barrichello – Formula 1’s most experienced driver with 276 race starts – said there is no way to know for sure whether Brawn was being honest with him. “The fact is that I left Ferrari because of that,” the 36-yearold Barrichello said. “My family created me as an honest person and I’m proud of that. If I had to do anything outside the rules to win, I would rather not do it. I would finish second.”

hinese young gun Cheng Siewting put Beijing Olympic heroine Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon in the shade with her explosive performance on the opening day of the Asian Senior Weightlifting Championships in Taldykorgan, Kazakhstan. Cheng swept the three gold medals on offer in the women’s 53kg class, lifting 100kg in the snatch and 123kg in the jerk for an Olympic Total aggregate of 223kg. Prapawadee, who set the Olympic clean and jerk record

of 126kg in Beijing, claimed silver in the snatch event after lifting 94kg. Hampered by a slight shoulder i n j u r y , Prapawadee failed to make the grade in the Prapawadee clean and jerk and had to be content with bronze after lifting 120kg. Prapawadee also missed out in the Olympic Total event where her combined lift of 214kg could only match

Taiwanese Li Chun Fang, who took the silver owing to her lower body weight. Earlier, Thailand’s Pensiri Laosirikul took a silver and two bronze in the women’s 48kg event. Taiwanese Chen Wei Ling, bronze medallist in Beijing, made a clean sweep by lifting 87kg in the snatch and 113kg in the jerk for a combined Olympic Total of 200kg. Pensiri snatched silver with a lift of 83kg and claimed two bronzes after lifting 103kg in the clean and jerk to make an aggregate of 186kg in the Olympic Total.

Berlusconi blasts AC Milan coach

SHEAR COURAGE! Newcastle kill off Middlesbrough in relegation 6-pointer; Shearer looks ahead AFP, Newcastle, England

ewcastle United manager Alan Shearer praised the “courage” of his players after their morale-boosting 3-1 win over northeast rivals Middlesbrough here at St James’ Park. But he was soon thinking of his team’s final two games which will decide whether they can escape relegation from the Premier League this season. “The players must enjoy that winning feeling because they have worked their socks off,” Shearer said after Monday’s win. “It’s been a great weekend for us and it’s in our hands now, but there are still two more games to come,” the former Newcastle and England striker, currently in caretaker charge of his hometown club, added. “I asked for three huge performances and they’ve given me one, but we need another in our next game against a very good Fulham side who are flying,” explained Shearer, put in charge of the Magpies when Joe Kinnear stepped aside following heart problems. “This is a magnificent feeling, it really is. I thought my players were brilliant because I asked them to show courage, determination and ability – and they did all of that,” Shearer insisted. “Sometimes you forget how to win matches and you get into a rut, but they’ve shown me what I see on the training ground. I believe we will survive.”

,,

Newcastle United’s Obafemi Martins shoots to score as Middlesbrough’s Andrew Taylor, Matthew Bates and Jeremie Aliadiere look on in desperation. Newcastle won 3-1. Newcastle triumphed after going behind to an own-goal from Habib Beye and Shearer said: “It would have been easy to feel sorry for themselves after going 1-0 down, but it didn’t affect them.” United hit back with goals from Steven Taylor and substitutes Obafemi Martins and Peter Lovenkrands, but Shearer refused to take the credit for the timely replacements. Instead, he singled out the contribution of Australia striker Mark Viduka, who has been troubled by a succession of injuries this season. Shearer said: “He was brilliant. Even with 10 minutes left, he still had enough energy to cause them problems.”

SOMETIMES YOU GET INTO A RUT,BUT THEY HAVE SHOWN ME WHAT I SEE ON THE TRAINING GROUND.I BELIEVE WE WILL SURVIVE. Alan Shearer

Newcastle are out of the bottom three as they approach a home game against Fulham before ending their season with a trip to Aston Villa. Middlesbrough, by contrast, look doomed to relegation and are not even guaranteed survival if they win their remaining games at home to Aston Villa and at West Ham. Manager Gareth Southgate said: “There is a lot of frustration and anguish in the dressing room because it was such an important game. It was difficult for us to take defeat after going ahead. Key events went against us and there was very little between the two teams. I don’t think 3-1 is a fair reflection of the game. We always looked a threat.”

AC Milan owner and Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi seemed to fuel rumours that Carlo Ancelotti could leave the club after blaming the coach for the Devils’ unsuccessful Serie A season. La Repubblica yesterday quoted Berlusconi as saying that “if this year we didn’t win the scudetto it’s only Ancelotti’s fault.” Speaking with a group of Italian tourists in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, Berlusconi added that, given their players, Milan could have “easily kept up with Inter [Milan]” who are set to secure a fourth straight title with three league games left. Berlusconi was in Egypt for a meeting with Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak. Milan are second, seven points adrift, and missed a chance to move closer to the city rivals as they drew 1-1 with Juventus late Sunday, after Inter drew 2-2 with minnows Chievo. Ancelotti on Monday said he was set to keep coaching Milan.“There is no need to lock my contract,” he said. “I have a contract with Milan until 2010, therefore I’m already locked.” Recently, however, there have been frequent rumours that English powerhouse Chelsea are keen on Ancelotti, who steered Milan to win one Serie A scudetto, two Champions League titles and one Club World Cup.

nyone given a jail sentence of more than a year will be barred from becoming a director of an English Premier League club under new regulations being brought in to beef up the competition’s rulebook. The scope of the league’s much-criticised ‘fit and proper person’ test has been extended so that prospective directors must receive approval before their appointment, and a con-

viction across the globe for a range of offences would rule them ineligible. PL chief executive Richard Scudamore was prepared to single out Manchester City’s discredited former owner Thaksin Shinawatra as an undesirable even before the new laws are introduced. Scudamore said: “Shinawatra is an interesting case. At the time he became a club owner, it would have been very difficult

to apply a fit and proper test that wouldn’t have allowed him in. He had been ousted as Thailand’s prime minister by a military junta and had sympathy over here. We asked the British Government for their take and he received full clearance. But once his wife was convicted in Thailand and he knew what was coming to him, he had to sell the club. The fact he left and sold so quickly was the application of our rule. The fit and

proper person test precipitated the sale.” The PL’s proposals, which have the backing of their 20 clubs, were in response to seven questions on football governance posed by Culture Secretary Andy Burnham last October following the furore raised by FA chairman Lord Triesman’s criticisms at the size of club debt. They include audit measures that will check sustainable debt.

DALLAS NOT DEAD Nowitzki keeps Mavs afloat, Cavs sweep into finals DPA, Los Angeles

D

irk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks weren’t ready to go on vacation just yet. The German erupted for 19 of his 44 points in the final quarter, including the go-ahead jumper with 1:05 left, and the Mavericks avoided a sweep by edging the Denver Nuggets 119117 yesterday in Game Four of their Western Conference semi-final play-off series. “We didn’t want to go home,” said Nowitzki, who shot 14-of25 from the floor and grabbed 13 rebounds. “We got some pride in this team, and we’re not done yet.” Rick Carlisle praised his superstar. “They’re a very few guys I’ve been around in this league who are as strong-willed as Dirk,”

Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks after making a shot. the Mavericks coach said. “Larry Bird is one of them, Reggie Miller is another one. They somehow find a way to get it done. He’s one of the great ones.” Dallas trail the best-of-seven

series 3-1, but will look to stay alive in Game Five at Denver tomorrow. However, no team has ever rallied to win a series after falling into a 3-0 hole. “Why not be part of history?” asked Mavs guard Jason Kidd.

“We have nothing to lose, the pressure is on them to end the series.” Elsewhere it was Cleveland Cavaliers 84, Atlanta Hawks 74. LeBron James and Cavaliers swept their way into the Eastern Conference finals, but they aren’t ready to celebrate just yet. League MVP James had 27 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as the Cavaliers closed out the Hawks 4-0 in their semi-final series. Even though the Cavaliers extended their NBA record of winning all eight games by double digits in two play-off series, the top seeds are not ready to break open the champagne. “Why should we celebrate? James asked. “We’re excited to be playing great basketball, but we’re a team playing for a championship. We’re not satisfied with anything short of getting to the Finals or trying to compete to win it.”

Sex scandal rocks rugby DPA, Sydney

A

ustralian rugby league players were warned yet again yesterday to stop abusing women after an expose of degrading sex acts and voyeuristic behaviour was screened on national television. “I again offer my apologies on behalf of the game for the pain those women experienced,” National Rugby League chief David Gallop said. A New Zealand woman told how six Cronulla Sharks Rugby Club players had sex with her in a Christchurch hotel room while another six looked on. “If I had a gun, I’d shoot them right now,” she said of an incident when she was 19. “Every time I looked up, there would be more and more people in the room and there’s lots of guys in the room watching, maybe two or three that were on the bed that were doing stuff to me.” New Zealand police investigated the incident but decided the sex was consensual.

was disappointed to miss out on the championship trophy but confident the team would emerge stronger from the experience of the final. BCC, who arrived on the Thai cricket scene in 2002, hold a string of records in the local league: Highest score in a 45overs game – 438 for 5, longest winning streak – 22 games, five Premier Division championships in six seasons and four consecutive premier division championships. The team has won 47 of the 53 games it has played in the last six seasons. Bangkok Cricket League chairman Vaughan McClear said BCC have become unstoppable and credited their success to the efforts of their founder and captain Mahesh Malani. “It’s the right leadership that’s making the difference and Mahesh is too good at it. BCC have helped raise the standards of cricket in Thailand.”

atrick Kane scored three times and Jonathan Toews had the go-ahead goal in a frantic final period yesterday as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Vancouver Canucks 7-5 to win the NHL Western Conference semi-final series 4-2. Chicago’s quick, talented team will make the franchise’s first appearance in the conference finals since 1995. And fittingly it was the two young stars, Kane and Toews, leading the way before a roaring crowd at the United Center. Daniel Sedin scored quickly with a shot from the left circle that put the Canucks ahead 5-4. Kane responded to tie the game at 5. Then, 49 seconds later on a power play, Toews’ shot deflected in off Vancouver’s Alexander Edler with 6:11 left. Kane capped his hat trick with a hard back-hander.
