s I toss into the bin the plastic and polystyrene in which my chicken fillet was neatly packed, I can’t help wondering where all this ends up. The toxic chemicals of such material cannot be integrated into the soil of Mother Earth. What is being done to the wrappers of potato chips and crackers, and to the millions of sanitary nap-

kins and used diapers? Isn’t it time to wake up and take a stance as enlightened consumers, who will not purchase goods unless we are sure it will not harm the environment in which our children will grow up? It is high time we realised one basic truth – our health and well-being depends on the purity of our environment. Period.

angkok is set for another season of mega-traffic jams from Monday, when children head back to school for the new semester. Motorists will be reduced to a crawling pace on Sathorn Road, where the flow averages 10 kilometres an hour on school days.

Stewing on Sathorn, Sukhumvit “There are so many famous establishments nearby,” explained Bangkok Traffic and Transportation Department di-

rector Jumpol Sampaopol yesterday. Located on or near Sathorn Road are the Bangkok Christian College, St Joseph Convent School and Assumption Suksa School. “Altogether, they have about 20,000 students and most come to school in their parents’ vehicles,” Jumpol said. He added that Samsen Road between Kiakkai and Wasukri Pier would also be a hotspot for jams due to the proximity of several big schools. Sukhumvit and Rama IV can expect congestion for the same reason.

Jumpol warned that the traffic nightmare would spread across the river, too. “There are lots of popular schools in Thon Buri.” But he said that recent improvements to roads should help ease the situation. “We will also have tow trucks standing by to clear breakdowns as quickly as possible.” He added that officials would be manning the routes around 28 of Bangkok’s largest schools to help facilitate traffic flow and help students cross roads.

Army of volunteers Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration

(BMA) is preparing an army of city “tesakit” officials to help police handle the traffic situation, said the BMA governor yesterday. MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said 638 tesakit officials would be stationed at 430 traffic hotspots – intersections, crossroads and in front of schools – to take care of students and other pedestrians during the morning and evening rush-hours. Part of a project called “Asa Panong Kham Thanon” (“Volunteer to Help Kids Cross the Roads”), the officials will be out on the streets during the first semester.

THE WORLD Technician jailed over celebrity sex photos

Stolen from laptop Sze Ho-chun, an employee of computer shop Elite Multimedia, had copied 1,300 sex photos from Chen’s laptop when the Canadian-born singer-actor took it in for repairs in 2006. The prosecution said the 24-year-old saved the images of Chen and other local celebrities on a compact disc. But it was not until February last year that the pictures found their way onto the Web and became one of the most searched-for items in Asia, where Hong Kong celebrities are huge stars. As a result, Chen announced his retirement from the entertainment scene and fled to his childhood home of Canada.

Yesterday, Sze was sentenced by magistrate Tong Man at Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court on three counts of obtaining access to a computer with a view to dishonest gain for himself or another.

Flu and luck

Breach of trust Tong said Sze’s copying of the images was a breach of trust and that the attention the case had garnered had shown how unpleasant it was to have your privacy invaded. Sze had been found guilty following an earlier trial, although it was not clear if he posted the images online himself. His lawyer Kevin Tang said outside court that Sze would probably appeal the conviction. The photos, which Chen has admitted taking, showed him in compromising positions with celebrities including Canto-pop star Gillian Chung, actress Cecilia Cheung and former actress Bobo Chan. The 28-year-old Chen had been one of Asia’s biggest entertainment stars. He recorded 16 albums under the Emperor Entertainment Group label, of which the latest was 2007’s “Allow Me To Reintroduce Myself”.

The landlady of a British pub has exploited a loophole in the country’s smoking ban by opening a “smoking research centre” where drinkers can light up legally. Locals at the Cutting Edge pub in Barnsley, northern England, must fill in a questionnaire on their smoking habits to satisfy legal requirements before sitting down for a drink and a cigarette in the centre. The Cutting Edge’s landlady Kerry Fenton opened the centre, which is a separate room in her pub, five days ago. “It’s given business a shot in the arm and it’s all in the name of research, legal and above board,” she told the Sun.

Miss California to keep crown Miss California USA can retain her crown after questions arose about seminude photographs taken of her as a teenager and her association with an anti-gay marriage group, pageant owner Donald Trump said on Tuesday. Carrie Prejean’s comments about her opposition to same-sex marriage ignited a media firestorm after a celebrity judge suggested her response may have cost her the Miss USA title; she finished as first-runner up. The photos surfaced later and led to the review of her title. “We’ve reviewed the pictures carefully,” Trump said at a packed news conference at Trump Plaza in New York City. “We’ve made a determination that the pictures taken were acceptable. Some were risque, but we are in the 21st century.” Trump also defended the answer Prejean gave at the April 19 Miss USA pageant. She was asked by celebrity blogger judge Perez Hilton what her view was of marriage; she said she believed marriage is only between a man and a woman. At the press conference, Prejean said: “On April 19 on that stage I exercised my freedom of speech, and I was punished for doing so.” She described Hilton’s question as “politically charged” with a “hidden personal agenda”. “This should not happen in America,” she said. – A P

The US space agency cha-

Britain’s Prince Charles sought to patch up a long-running row with architects over his traditionalist views on building design – even as he dismissed the modern approach as “flawed”. The prince’s interventions on architecture have put him at odds with many in the profession. In a speech to the Royal Institute of British Architects on Tuesday, he apologised for a row caused during his address there 25 years ago when he described plans for an extension to the National Gallery in London as a “monstrous carbuncle on the face of a muchloved and elegant friend”. He insisted the remarks were not intended to “kickstart some kind of style war”, but to make “room” for traditionalists. However, he threatened to immediately reignite the row as he warned there was “a surfeit of abstracted ideology over the practical realities linked to people’s lives” in current architecture practice. – A F P

ilipino moviemakers are euphoric that four of their independent titles have been included in the line-up for this year’s prestigious Cannes Film Festival – a first for a country with a struggling cinema industry. Three are included in the official selection for the main competition, the section Un Certain Regard and the Special Screenings category, while a fourth was selected for the Short Film Corner. Leading the pack is “Kinatay”, a film about a gang of hitmen who chop up the bodies of their victims. It is directed by Brillante Mendoza, who also competed for the festival’s coveted Palme d’Or last year with “Serbis”. An appearance in the main competition in consecutive years is a rare achievement by any filmmaker. “It’s an exciting year for the Philippines,” says Mendoza, adding that the entry of the four Filipino movies in the Cannes festival bodes well for the industry, which continues to suffer from piracy, high taxes and stiff competition from Hollywood. It is Mendoza’s third year in a row to take part in the festival. In 2007, his “Foster Child” premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight programme to rave reviews. After Sean Penn’s high-profile stint last year, Cannes organisers choose a French icon to preside

T

he Cannes Film Festival faced a problem this year – how to replace passionate, attention-grabbing actor Sean Penn as jury president? For starters, organisers recruited a 2009 jury that includes actress Robin Wright Penn, who is in the midst of divorcing the Academy Awardwinning “Milk” star. And as jury president, the festival opted for a French icon in I s a b e l l e Huppert, who has starred in almost 100 films Huppert and twice won Cannes’ best-actress prize. “It was not easy to find someone after Sean Penn,” festival director Thierry Fremaux says. “Sean was great as a president. We’ll miss him.” But Fremaux is confident

soopsip Phuket fest is cancelled Despite the Asean summit being postponed to October, next month’s Phuket Film Festival will still be cancelled. “I just sent out 1,000 press releases and 15 minutes later I learn that the government is calling off its meeting,” festival director Scott Rosenberg said yesterday. Big-name Hollywood guests had made plans to come for the fest from June 4 to 11 – Oscar-winning Brody actor Adrian Brody, director Gus Van Sant and producer Darnell Martin. To call them and say the festival was back on, well, Rosenberg says people would think he’s “a flake”. Brody was “squeamish” about coming anyway, due to the heavy security on the island ahead of the Asean confab that was planned for June 13 and 14. Rosenberg said he thought about postponing the fest until August, but none of his stars would be available then. “I’ve been through an emotional wringer,” he says. “I’m tired. It’s time to just let it rest.” He’s not sure when the next edition of the Phuket Film Festival will be held.

Last laughs Thierry Fremaux, festival director Huppert will do a stellar job. She is the first woman to head the jury since Liv Ullman in 2001. “She is a very serious person, and she said that for her, being president of Cannes is like having a role in a film,” Fremaux says. Also on this year’s jury are actress Asia Argento, American director James Gray, Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan and British novelist and screenwriter Hanif Kureishi.

Meanwhile, there’s another fest – the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s World Comedy Film Festival set for Bangkok from June 10 to 16. It overlapped the Phuket fest by two days. The scheduling conflict and the money being spent by the TAT – Bt14 million for comedy versus less than Bt1 million for Phuket – was another problem Rosenberg was facing.

Ono received the items from the medical examiner in December 1980, when the former Beatle was gunned down in New York City at age 40. “It was hard to include,” Ono says. “And I thought it might be criticised as well.” But ultimately, she thought it was important to let people see the effects of gun violence. eo Lytel was diagnosed with autism as a toddler, but by age nine he’d overcome the disorder. His progress is part of a growing body of research that suggests at least 10 per cent of children with autism can “recover” from it – most of them after undergoing years of intensive behavioural therapy. Sceptics question the phenomenon, but University of Connecticut psychology professor Deborah Fein presented research this month at an autism conference in Chicago that included 20 children who got a correct diagnosis but years later were no longer considered autistic. Among them was Leo, a boy in Washington who once made no eye contact and often spun around in circles – classic autism symptoms. Now he is an articulate, social third-grader. Autism researcher Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer of the advocacy group Autism Speaks, calls Fein’s research a breakthrough. “We’re at a very early stage in terms of understanding”

the phenomenon, Dawson says. Previous studies have suggested that between 3 and 25 per cent of autistic kids recover. Fein’s studies have shown the range is 10 to 20 per cent. Recovery is “not a realistic expectation for the majority of kids”, but parents should know it can happen, Fein says. Doubters say either they really weren’t autistic to begin with, or they’re still socially

odd and obsessive, but they don’t exactly meet criteria for autism. Fein insists the children in her study “really were” autistic and now they’re “really not”. Because the phenomenon is so rare, Fein is still seeking children to help bolster evidence as to what traits formerly autistic kids may have in common. Physical activities, especially running and jogging, can cause allergic symptoms in some people, and when this happens, it’s called exerciseinduced urticaria or hives.

Symptoms may include itchiness, flushing, difficulty breathing, stomach cramps and swelling. It may be related to the ingestion of certain foods before exercise. Generally, an antihistamine is partially effective in preventing a flare-up. Patients should avoid precipitating food and medication before exercise. However, without reviewing your medical history and a proper examination, it is difficult to make a conclusive diagnosis. My advice is to see a dermatologist for specific diagnosis and recommendation.

covered kids’ brains look more like those of autistic or non-autistic children. Autistic children’s brains tend to be slightly larger than normal. Imaging scans also are being done to examine brain function in formerly autistic kids. Researchers want to know if their “normal” behaviour is a result of “normal” brain activity, or if their brains process information in a non-typical way to compensate for any deficits.

Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

Today’s Birthday: Venture out of your own world and discover new places, people and interests. This is a learning year, one to experience all you can and apply it to what you have been working so hard to accomplish. The changes and reforms you incorporate will make a difference and raise your profile among your peers. ARIES ** March 21-April 19 Don’t mix up your plans because someone is causing you grief. A problem will result if you let your personal life affect your work. Putting pressure on someone you love will backfire. TAURUS ***** April 20-May 20 Stop being passive when you need to be aggressive. Waiting for someone else to make a decision will not result in what’s best for you. If you aren’t willing to take on something new, you will be passed by.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★★★★

GEMINI *** May 21-June 20 Show your worth by expressing your ideas and, before you know it, you will be calling the shots. Someone you have wanted to work with will make a beneficial suggestion. Networking will pay off. CANCER *** June 21-July 22 You may feel like hiding out but that won’t resolve any of the issues you’ve been facing. Take a handson approach. Now is not the time to put up with people or situations that are not working for you. LEO *** July 23-Aug. 22 Don’t let others take the lead on a pending project or concern. You may be too busy having fun to notice that someone is taking advantage of you. Don’t spend unnecessarily. VIRGO ***** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Take action before it’s too late. Fight for your rights and for what you want. You can come out on top but only if you have the gumption to fully participate and speak out.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

LIBRA ** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 Honesty with regard to your abilities will help you find your niche. Trying to buy your way into something won’t work. You have to have what it takes to get there with talent, skill and knowledge. Keep personal and professional matters separate. SAGITTARIUS *** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 You must spend more time building your equity. Letting things ride or stay the same will not bring the profits you need to sustain your lifestyle. Expect a deal to be rebuked.

Ishikawa to play in PGA Championship

Renault are following Ferrari in threatening to withdraw from next season’s Formula One world championship because of the budget cap imposed by the sport’s governing body. Renault said they are frustrated that FIA adopted the new regulations while ignoring alternative plans proposed by the teams. Like Ferrari a day earlier, Renault said they will only take part in the 2010 championship if FIA revokes the new regulations. – AP

Japanese golfer Ryo Ishikawa has a received a special invitation to play in the August 13-16 PGA Championship. “I received the news today, I’m very happy,” the 17-yearold Ishikawa said. “My impression is that it’s Ishikawa an extremely tough layout and I will aim as high as I can.” This year’s PGA championship will be held at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. – AP

England plan World Cup Rugby feast England are proposing the biggest ever Rugby World Cup if they are chosen to stage the 2015 tournament, with eight football stadiums among the 12 venues they plan to use. The Rugby Football Union said yesterday that, by using grounds including Wembley, Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, Liverpool’s Anfield, Manchester United’s Old Trafford and Elland Road in Leeds, it would be able to sell 3 million seats – an increase of 30 per cent on the 2007 World Cup in France. The board of directors of troubled Serie A giants Juventus has backed coach Claudio Ranieri until the end of the season, saying he’s brought a better balance to the team. There were still doubts yesterday about the transfer of Brazil midfielder Diego from Werder Bremen. Germany’s Bild daily claimed that Diego’s father had again held a meeting with Bayern, with both sides agreeing on a four-year contract.– AFP

talians have been speaking out in support of Ferrari in the wake of the team’s threat to pull out of Formula One next season unless the International Automobile Federation (FIA) changes its rules. Ferrari issued a statement on Tuesday claiming they would not take part in the 2010 world championship unless the FIA reversed a budget cap ruling that would advantage teams who spent no more than £40 million a season.

And despite the gravity of their threat, they have found support from all quarters in Italy. Gianni Petrucci, president of the Italian Olympic Committee pleaded for a compromise to be reached. “In the name of Italian sport I call on good sense to prevail, with a restoration of those basic rules that can guarantee the presence in 2010 of the only constructor in the world that has never missed an appointment in the history of F1,” he said. For Petrucci it is a matter of national pride that Ferrari should be an integral part of Formula One.

“[Tuesday] was a sad day for Italian sport. The potential that the Scuderia of Maranello would miss out on the world championship in 2010 is certainly something that saddens not only me but millions of sports fans and Italian fans for whom the Reds represent a legend. “With all its titles, Ferrari represents a part of the history of sport in our country and has contributed to the joy of winning through all its success and trophies that have no equal in Formula One.” Giorgio Pighi, the mayor of Modena, said an F1 championship without Ferrari was “unthinkable”.

Gayle ‘finished with’ captaincy

Chris Gayle’s West Indies lost the first Test against England.

Chris Gayle plans to step down as West Indies captain and says he would not care if Test cricket eventually gave way to the shorter, brasher Twenty20 game. The 29-year-old Gayle, who will lead the side in the second Test against England starting today, told a British newspaper that he was tired of the responsibility that comes with leading the side. He also criticised his England rival Andrew Strauss for querying the wisdom of playing in the Twenty20 Indian Premier League and arriving just two days before the start of the test series, which England leads 1-0. “I need some time for myself, to be honest with you,” Gayle said. “There’s always something you have to go and do. I’m not that type of person. I can’t take on too much. So soon I will be handing over this captaincy. I’ll soon finish with it.” – A P

EMULATING GREATS Liverpool’s Gerrard wins journalists’ nod as player of year AFP, London

teven Gerrard’s leadership of Liverpool’s most sustained title challenge in years has won him the Football Writers’ Association (FWA)’s player of the year award for the first time. The Reds captain saw off challenges from Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand to secure top spot in a poll of FWA members. The 28-year-old has spent most of this season playing as a second striker, forging an exhilarating partnership with Fernando Torres. He has scored 23 goals in all competitions and become the club’s record scorer in European competition. FWA chairman Steve Bates said: “Steven has had a fantastic season and has so often been the driving force behind Liverpool’s forceful challenge for the Premier League title. “Steven is viewed by the football writers who voted as the heartbeat of Liverpool’s team and a player who gives everything for the cause.” Gerrard, who will receive his award at a dinner in London on May 29, said he was “a little bit surprised” to succeed Cristiano Ronaldo, who was honoured by the FWA in both 2007 and 2008. “When you look at the quality of the players there are in this league, it’s a great privilege to win this kind of award,” Gerrard said. “The quality is getting better and better each year so to win

Over the course of the past ten months Gerrard has once again cemented his standing as the finest midfielder in European football.

Manchester United player Carlos Tevez may be headed for Manchester City, the Daily Express reports. The paper cited Kia Joorabchian, Tevezs agent, as saying the Argentine is prepared to join a club that isn’t in the Champions League provided the team has the ambition and resources to qualify for Europe’s top competition. Manchester City, owned by the cash-rich Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mansour, is one of the few clubs in Europe who would be able to afford Tevez’s pay demand of £100,000 a week and £32-million fee. Other clubs including Tottenham, Chelsea and Real Madrid have all been named in recent days as possible bidders for the 25-year-old striker. Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Tevez on a Bosman-style free transfer, The Sun said. Tevez, who is on loan at United, will be a free agent once his deal runs out next month.

Benitez wants Silva Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has made a “take-it-or- leave-it” £15million offer for Valencia forward David Silva, the Sun reports. Benitez, a former Valencia manager, made the offer despite being unhappy with the Spaniards for disclosing a previous Liverpool approach for the 23-yearold.

Coppell resigns as Reading exit play-offs AFP, Reading

Steve Coppell has quit after his team failed to make the P’ship.

teve Coppell has resigned as manager of Reading after the club he has coached for the last five and a half years failed in their quest to secure an immediate return to the Premier League. Reading were beaten 2-0 defeat at home to Burnley in the second leg of a Championship play-off semi-final on Tuesday, losing the tie 3-0 on aggregate. The Royals had been on track

to clinch automatic promotion to the top flight following relegation last season but they wilted in the last three months of the campaign, largely due to wretched home form. “Following our exit from the play-offs, I feel it’s the best thing, for both the club and myself, for me to leave,” Coppell said in a statement released by the club yesterday. The former Manchester United and England winger

took charge of Reading in 2003 and guided them to promotion to the Premier League three years later. The 2006-07 season saw Coppell win plaudits for Reading’s passing style as they finished 8th in their first season among the elite, but he could not sustained that success and the Royals dropped back down to the Championship last season. Coppell, who was out of contract at the end of the season,

had been understood to have been contemplating a break from football even if Reading secured promotion and he cut a dejected figure in the immediate aftermath of Tuesday’s match. “I don’t think any team has had more chances than us to get promoted,” he admitted. “We’ve gone nine games without a win at home and if we’d won three of them we might be contemplating the Premier League.”

T

he Boston Celtics received a big lift from an unlikely hero to pull out an improbable win. Ray Allen hit the go-ahead three pointer with 1:20 left and little-used Stephon Marbury scored all 12 of his points in the final quarter as the Celtics overcame a late 14-point deficit to beat the Orlando Magic 92-88 yesterday for a 3-2 advantage in their Eastern Conference semi-final play-off series. “This is a big win, it shows the true character of champions,” said Celtics Glen “Big Baby” Davis, who had 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter. “We were down and we were frustrated. For us to come back in a huge game is amazing.”

Boston Celtics’ Ray Allen, No 20, and Stephon Marbury leap after Allen hit a 3-pointer with 1:20 left in the game to give Boston the lead.

Davis gave credit to Marbury for sparking the comeback. “Steph lit the fire and the fire spread for us to get the job done,” he said.

Marbury was delighted to contribute to the victory: “It felt good because we needed it, and the timing was right for me to go in and do what I did to win the game. My mindset

was to create something where we could change the flow of the game.” In another game, it was LA Lakers 118, Houston Rockets 78. After getting embarrassed in Game Four on the road, the Lakers returned the favor to regain the upper hand. Kobe Bryant scored 26 before sitting out the fourth quarter, Spaniard Pau Gasol had 16 with 13 rebounds and the Lakers routed the Rockets to grab a 3-2 lead in their Western Conference semi-final play-off series. The lethargic Lakers trailed by as many as 29 after three quarters before eventually losing 99-87 to the Yao Ming-less Rockets on Sunday, but Bryant and his team-mates bounced back in a big way. “We just made our adjustments,” Bryant said. “We made plays.” The Lakers can close out the series tomorrow in Houston.
