apanese newsmen have travelled to Wat Tha Luang in Phichit’s Muang district to cover nine-yearold Keigo Zato’s search for his Japanese father, Katzumi. The journalists are from the Nishi-Nippon Shimbun daily and TV Asahi, says Phichit Governor Somchai Hatayatanti. Meanwhile, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has contacted the Thai embassies in Tokyo and Osaka in an effort to find out whether Katzumi passed through immigration control there nine years ago.
Her Majesty concerned Keigo is continuing to sell fish food to merit makers at the temple’s pier to finance his return to school on Monday. He took time out yesterday to make merit for Her Majesty the Queen, who has shown concern for the boy after he lost his Thai mother following a long battle with disease. The story of Keigo’s quest to find his father by showing his photograph to Japanese visitors at the temple has made the headlines and brought donations pouring in. or years, Bangkok commuters have faced a rushhour nightmare on the way to work or school each morning. That nightmare lasts longest in Sathorn, the capital’s prime business district – and its most congested. But from today, the Skytrain is giving gridlocked commuters a key to freedom. The BTS extension from Saphan Taksin station to Wong Wian Yai – the first Skytrain route to venture across the river to Thon Buri – is being launched with a trial run at 5.20am before
Jump out of the jam It should help ease the traffic jams along the Sathorn RoadKing Taksin Bridge route, the most congested road in Bangkok, says Jumpol Sumpaopol, director-general of the Bangkok Traffic and Transport Department. “We expect about 2,000 vehicles per hour during rush-hour after the BTS extension opens, compared to almost 15,000 vehicles currently,” says Jumpol. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will be at the launch ceremony to wave off the first train.

The extension is expected to boost the estimated 400,000 Skytrain journeys made every day by 30,000 to 50,000. “We are launching a campaign to encourage parents who usually drive their children to Sathorn schools to use
the Skytrain instead. Parking space has been increased near the newly opened stations and shuttle buses will ferry passengers to stations,” says Jumpol.
Boost for Thon Buri Supoj Saebe, 23, a company employee living in Thon Buri, says the extension is a huge boost for commuters who have to cross the Chao Phya River to get to work. “Normally, I travel to the east bank by bus, but now I’ll take the Skytrain when I’m in a hurry,” he says. Its Skytrain link to the rest of the city means that Thon Buri has become Bangkok’s new hot address, and condominiums have mushroomed close to the extension’s two stations to meet demand.

The hard work of repairing the Hubble Space Telescope has begun. Astronauts John Grunsfeld and Drew Feustel were set to exit the space shuttle Atlantis for the first of five spacewalks to upgrade Hubble. Astronauts will replace the telescope’s 15-year-old workhorse camera with one that sees deeper into the universe. The new camera is the size of a baby grand piano. The old camera will be displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. This spacewalk should take about six-and-a-half hours and includes replacing a computer data device that broke down last year. Hubble and Atlantis are flying in a 563-kilometre-high orbit littered with space junk. And some of that debris put a bit of scare into Nasa late on Wednesday. The air force noticed a 10-centimetre piece of debris was on a path to come close to the shuttle. Left over from the 2007 Chinese destruction of a satellite during a weapons test, the debris was predicted to come within 2.7 kilometres of Atlantis. It was close enough to watch, but far enough that Nasa determined it didn’t need to move Atlantis out of the way, said agency space debris scientist Mark Matney. The debris missed the shuttle and Mission Control let it pass by without noting it.

he destruction of the world’s oceans due to climate change and overuse is a “life and death issue” for humanity, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said yesterday. “We must come to the rescue of the oceans. We must save them from the ravages of abuse and over-exploitation by humankind, from the havoc due to pollution and dire effects of climate change,” Yudhoyono said at a global conference on oceans. “This is a life and death is-
sue for the community of nations, including Indonesia, who prides itself on being the world’s largest archipelago.” Ministers and officials from more than 70 countries are meeting in the Indonesian city of Manado for the World Ocean Conference, the first global meeting on the relationship between oceans and climate change.
‘Unite to survive’ “Today it is time for the world to hear yet another important message: that we can only survive the 21st century if
we are united in caring for and preserving our oceans,” Yudhoyono said. The president made no mention of his own country’s massive failings in conserving its environment, ranging from rampant illegal logging to over-fishing and the destruction of coral reefs through the use of bombs. Greenhouse-gas emissions from extensive logging of Indonesia’s tropical forests have pushed the country to become the world’s thirdlargest emitter behind the United States and China. Illegal fishing and pollution are widespread, with garbage and diesel oil clogging the waters at Manado’s harbour close to the conference venue.
A high-speed police chase through suburban Los Angeles County ended with a foot pursuit and a police officer kicking a suspect in the head after he gave up and lay face down on the ground. Video from TV news helicopters of the chase showed the driver speeding the wrong way down a street. He then crashed into an oncoming vehicle, got out of the car and ran into a residential backyard. Surrounded by high garden walls and apparently realising he had nowhere to go, the suspect got face down on the grass with his arms outstretched. An officer from the El Monte Police Department ran up to the suspect and delivered what appeared to be a sharp kick to the head or neck. A second officer arrived soon after and used what appeared to be a baton or a flashlight to deliver several blows to the suspect’s side. areering down a mountain along a metal half-pipe track, loosely strapped into a flimsy plastic sled, you can’t help but giggle. Hurtling down this looping course was about the best fun I’d had so far in Dalian, and an amusingly novel way to descend into the fun park below after taking a cable car up to the top of the local TV tower. We arrived in Dalian, in China’s northeastern Liaoning province, a few days before, after two hours on a plane from Beijing, our eyes red from staying up all night watching the World Cup Cricket final. But what better place to rest than a sun-kissed destination? Speeding towards Tiger Beach, a 20-minute cab ride from the airport, this city of a little under two million people was surprisingly smoggy.

Dalian has several beaches where the azure waters can be glimpsed.
During the late 19th century it was a mining town, and in the mid-20th century the Soviets transformed Dalian into a hub for shipbuilding. These days it’s home to several oil refineries. No wonder that the air was more like Beijing’s than an idyllic sand-and-surf getaway. Arriving at the Dalian Regent, where the nightly rate is 430 yuan (Bt2,200), we were escorted to our waterfront room. Unfortunately, the lack of visibility obscured our view of any undulating blue surface.
Coffee break A taxi back to the city centre dropped us off at the New-Mart mall. Espressos at Karffer Coffee gave us the perk we needed to pound the pavement. After exploring the main thoroughfare, which features many of the world’s most expensive brand names, we tramped through an underground strip. Here, the stalls

After finding our way out of the labyrinth, we popped into Victory Square, which is surrounded by upmarket hotels and restaurants. Alleyways nearby are filled with boutiques and eateries – little streets that wouldn’t be out of place in European cities. In fact, the architecture could fool you into thinking you’re in Europe.
Russian influence is evident in the overall aesthetic of Dalian, yet the gaudy giant soccer ball that sits in Labour Park is probably not something that Muscovites erected. The city boasts one of China’s best football teams, Dalian Shide, and in Zhongshan Square you’ll often pass groups of youngsters toeing a ball around. After a tough day of kicking a lump of leather, you can retreat to the bars and nightclubs near the square.

We’d prefer to call it ‘a demonstration in communication through body language’.” “I came across a book on the topic and found it very interesting, so I did some further research online.” The troupe began with a few

whether we can use these same gestures in different contexts. “A thumb up means giving praise, but if you stretch out your arm, it suggests anger, and when you twist your thumb down, you show disapproval.” Nophand has no wish to “teach or lecture”, just share some observations, as he puts his three performers onstage. Saifah Tanthana is the artistic director of the On Box Theatre Group, which recently staged “Tropical Night”. Sasapin Siriwanij has performed most frequently with B-Floor. And Prawit Kittichantheera appeared in “Tropical Night”. These three are the Spontaneous Dance Company. They’ve already offered a sneak peek of the “show” on the BTS Skywalk. “Generally, the public
seemed to censor it perceptually,” Nophand says. “They ‘saw’ the show, but they looked like they didn’t, and some just walked away. Interestingly enough, when they noticed a video camera taping the action, they were more interested.”

ther than the scripted kind that takes place on stage, little drama happens in the one-party state of Singapore, especially when it has to do with LGBT issues. At least that used to be the case. The drama on the island nation since March hasn’t fallen far short of “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Far exceeding my usual lesbian fantasies of being shown how to ride a Harley Davidson, the plot has involved an alleged conspiracy to turn Singapore into Lesbos and heroic duels against Christian evangelists with 18th-century mentalities and pirate-like behaviour. In March, a group of Christian fundamentals women launched a surprise
takeover of Aware (the Association of Women for Action and Research), Singapore’s main women’sadvocacy, after stealthily swelling their ranks with registration of hundreds of new members. However, it was soon discovered that more than half of those elected
attend the Anglican Church of Our Saviour, which also runs an ex-gay ministry. azio beat Sampdoria 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw to win the Italian Cup at the Stadio Olimpico here on Wednesday and qualify for next season’s Europa League. Lazio goalkeeper Nestor Muslera saved two penalties in the shoot-out, which went to sudden death after both teams missed one each of their first five. Frenchman Ousmane Dabo scored the winning penalty after Hugo Campagnaro had seen his shot saved.

The Argentinian’s loan deal at Old Trafford runs out this summer and Ferguson is known to be reluctant to pay the fee that Tevez’s “owners” Media Sports Investment (MSI) are demanding. MSI control Tevez’s playing rights and want United to part with £22 million for the player – on top of the 10 million they have already paid for his two seasons at Old Trafford. But despite the ongoing wrangling, Ferguson insists he wants Tevez to sign a long-term deal at Old Trafford. “He is a fantastic little player,” Ferguson added. “He knows that I want him to stay and I had another chat with him today again.”
German giants Bayern Munich confirmed that Dutch coach Louis van Gaal will take over as head coach on July 1 having signed a two-year contract to replace the fired Jurgen Klinsmann. Having led AZ Alkmaar to the Dutch title this season, the 57year-old has signed a deal with the Bundesliga champions, ending weeks of speculation over whether or not he would succeed Klinsmann, who was fired on April 27. “We are happy to have signed an experienced and successful football coach for Bayern Munich such as Louis van Gaal,” said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in a statement. “We wanted him to come to Bayern and Louis van Gaal wanted to come to us, it was just a case of sorting out the details.” Having steered Ajax to the Champions League title in 1995, the fiery Van Gaal has a wealth of experience having led the giants from Amsterdam to consecutive Dutch titles between 1994, 1995 and 1996. In 1998 and 1999, he also won La Liga with Barcelona before taking charge of the Dutch national side in 2000, but failure to lead them to the World Cup finals in 2002 meant he was replaced by Dick Advocaat.
