Bangkok motorists slowed to a crawl during rush hour in many areas yesterday as primary and secondary schools opened their doors for a new academic year. Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner Maj-General Panu Kerdlarpphol said roads that linked Krung Thon Bridge and Taksin Bridge were the most congested between 6am and 8am.
Skytrain ignored Cars were still bumper to bumper in Thon Buri’s Wong Wian Yai despite the opening of the new Skytrain route over the Chao Phya river. “Most parents didn’t switch from driving their children to schools as parking lots at the new stations are not yet available. So the traffic was jammed in the area and along the Taksin Bridge-Sathon Road route,” Panu said. Other congested areas included Samsen and Sukhumvit, where several large schools are located. “All in all, due to the absence of rain, the jams for the opening day of school were less heavy than last year,” said Panu. He added that traffic police, traffic volunteers and municipal officials were helping ease traffic all over the capital, especially in front of big schools. Police were at schools to encourage parents to find alternatives to driving their kids to school or at least spend less time around the entrances. Black May’s black boxes? Porntip probes mysterious containers on seabed off Chon Buri amid rumours of human remains inside D A I LY X P R E S S

tiny underwater camera may soon slip through a hole in a mysterious container on the seabed off Chon Buri’s Sattahip district to check what is inside. “We have found a hole in the container through which groupers swim in and out,” Central Institute of Forensic Science director Porntip Rojanasunan revealed yesterday.
Skulls discovered Porntip has been assigned to investigate the containers after rumours spread that the bodies of those who died in the Black May incident were inside. Chon Buri’s Samaesan district chief
Pramote Towsakul said local people had in the past discovered human skulls in sunken containers but were too scared to report to the police. Porntip’s team has already located one of the containers. After examining the size of the barnacles attached to the container, officials say it has probably been on the seabed for more than 20 years. This prompted Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to point out that the mysterious container could not be related to the Black May incident, which took place 17 years ago. from which many never returned home. Port Authority of Thailand acting director Sunida Sakulrattana said her agency was poring over old files to identify a company found carrying containers of industrial waste into Thailand’s seas about two or
three decades ago. “Officials turned a ship away for carrying industrial waste into Thailand without permission. Now, we have to find out whether the ship secretly dropped the containers on its way out,” Sunida said. Customs Department director-general Utid Tamwatin said if officials could see the serial number of the container, they would be able to identify its contents and origin. Meanwhile, the chairman of the Committee of the May 1992 Heroes’ Relatives, Adul Khiewboriboon, has submitted a letter urging the army to return the remains of protesters. He said three generals should know where the remains are located. “The three generals were involved in the Black May incident. They should know the answer.”

Gambling addict wants his cash back An Australian gambling addict who ended up losing his property portfolio was lured to Melbourne’s Crown Casino with promises of free flights, free accommodation and his own butler, a court was told yesterday. Former property tycoon Harry Kakavas is suing the casino for A$50 million (Bt1.3 billion) over his losses of A$20 million between 2004 and 2006. The self-confessed pathological gambler banned himself from the casino in 1995. But when he began flying the Pacific to gamble in Las Vegas, it’s alleged the casino offered inducements for him to return to Crown. Kakavas, 42, claims he was flown for free 30 times from his Gold Coast home to Melbourne. As well as trips on Crown’s VIP executive jet, Kakavas said he was handed wads of cash to start his sprees on the baccarat tables. D PA

he public disgrace has been without precedent for a member of this Gulf country’s ruling family: first, the government publicly acknowledged that the half brother of the president had appeared in a torture video. Then it ordered his detention while a civil lawsuit moved ahead in the United States. But it’s the private deliberations over Sheik Issa bin Zayed Al Nahyan that could bring the biggest test for the Emirates’ long-enshrined twotier system of justice. The dilemma for Emirates
officials is whether to break tradition and order a courtroom trial for a member of the ruling elite as demanded by international rights groups, or whether to remain loyal to tribal codes and render any possible punishment away from the public eye.
‘Sodomy and beating’ International rights groups have demanded a full and open inquiry into the fiveyear-old video, released by one of Issa’s former business partners as part of a lawsuit filed in Houston. The suit charges Issa and other members of the ruling Al Nahyan
family with false imprisonment and torture in an attempt to get back the tapes. The former partner, Texas businessman Bassam Nabulsi, says the video shows the sheik sodomising and brutally beating an Afghan merchant who, Issa claims, cheated him on a grain deal. Issa is the half brother of Abu Dhabi’s ruler and UAE president Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Issa had entrusted Nabulsi, the sheik’s personal business manager, with the tapes, his financial records and investment documents before their falling out. Nabulsi’s US-based lawyer is convinced the sheik’s case will never get to court and doubts Issa will ever be punished.
Taiwanese prosecutors said yesterday they are probing claims that a pageant organiser conned a beauty contest by pretending his Australian models were in fact from many different countries. Models claiming to be from 24 countries took part in the contest in Taiwan last week, but organiser Huang Chih-hui later found that at least nine women, including winner Esma Voloder of Bosnia, were from Australia. She said she had been fooled by the scam, having paid air fares, hotel and other activities for the women for what was supposed to be an international event. A spokesman for Taoyuan district prosecutor’s office said it was probing fraud and document-forgery charges against Australian organiser Gavin Dooley. Dooley told prosecutors that Australia is a nation of immigrants and the contestants all have dual nationalities. The Australian-born winner, Voloder, said her parents were Bosnian refugees and that she considered herself Bosnian. – AFP

ontreal-born DJ and turntablist A-Trak, real name Alain Macklovitch, was viewed as the prodigy of the ’90s, picking up five world championships as he built his skills and performed alongside Kanye West. Tomorrow night he’ll be in Bangkok, manning the deck at Q Bar and mixing his refreshing hybrids of hip-hop and techno tunes. He found time to trade emails with us before boarding his flight.
What are you working on now?
Lots of stuff, as always! I’m doing a remix for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs that I’m really excited about because I love the song. I just recorded a project with Armand Van Helden by the name of “Duck Sauce” and I’m starting to plan an A-Trak album! Still touring with Kanye West?

I stopped touring with him a year ago but I still collaborate with him from time to time. I just recorded some scratches for a song he did with Kid Cudi, Common and Lady Gaga called “Poker Face”. How did it all start?
I started with the technical stuff when I was 13, experimenting on my dad’s record player. The first couple of years of my career were devoted to learning all these techniques and entering competitions. As time went by, I gradually got more interested in playing records and rocking parties.

Chromeo and I have collaborated many times. We just don’t make a big deal out of it. I recorded the scratches on their first big hit “Needy Girl”, but I did it under an alias (Kool DJ Alain M) because they asked me to scratch like it was 1982. What’s the show at Q going to be like?
Fun! Expect to hear a wide variety of music, lots of stuff you never heard before, and it will probably move very fast.
50 Who’ll be on the next ‘Academy Fantasia’?
THE SELECTION of contestants for the next season of “True Academy Fantasia” will be broadcast live on Wednesday night, when 50 finalists from regional auditions will be culled down to 20. The contestants, all vying to be on the sixth season of cable-TV network TrueVisions’ 24-hour reality talent channel, will take the stage at the Aksra Theatre in the King Power Complex. “We’ve selected the 50 people from 100 candidates and we thought the live broadcast would be a chance for fans to catch up with the show before we start our reality-show broadcast on June 29,” says producer Atthapol na Bangxang. TrueVisions plans to bring something new to this year’s show, Atthapol says, but he didn’t elaborate further. The first live concert of all the “AF6” contestants will be on July 4 at the Thunder Dome at Impact in Muang Thong Thani. esplendent in a figure-hugging grey and black dress, Sorrawee Nattee wept tears of joy after being crowned Thailand’s most beautiful transsexual. Sorrawee took the top prize in the Miss Tiffany’s Universe pageant on Friday in Pattaya, topping 29 other transsexuals and receiving a Honda car and
Bt100,000. “I’m very excited,” the willowy 20-year-old from Songkhla said. Appearing overwhelmed by hordes of photographers, camera crews and well-wishers, the scene played out before a live television audience of 15 million people. Against a soundtrack of thumping music, the pageant featured an Italian Casanovatheme number involving gondolas and masked dancers. A pirate ship drifted across the stage swirled in thick “fog”. The packed theatre was a mix
of transsexuals, gay and straight couples and Western tourists. Dresses ranged from flowing white ensembles to shimmering red numbers and pink miniskirts. “She had smart answers and is very beautiful,” was how judge Marut Sarowat, a wellknown television and stage director, assessed Sorrawee. Asked to name her hero, Sorrawee earned loud applause by naming her mother and father, and as the evening progressed, cheers for her grew louder as the audience urged their favourite to victory.
Yingsak Jonglertjesdawong has had a cooking show on TGN and True for years, sharing countless delightful recipes and hawking the video CDs on his website. As a teacher, he loves to share. It came as a shock, though, when he found a pirate copy of one of his DVDs on sale in Sydney. “They sell it for $1, and business is good,” he says, but he’s philosophical about it. “At least I’m helping the sellers earn a living.”

The fairytale setting was perfect for the extroverted creations of avant-garde New York couple Phillipe and David Blond. Abiding by the motto “You don't have to be blond to be Blond”, they create fashion that’s far from conventional streetwear. It’s elaborate couture with sex appeal and a high glam factor, flamboyant outfits with stunning
accessories, glittering, sparkling and striking. Stars such as Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Shakira, Madonna, Britney Spears and Dita von Teese love clothes by the Blonds. The music for the show came courtesy of pop queen Katy Perry, who performed on the catwalk, paying tribute to the designers and models. The show was one in a series of events comprising the Life Ball, Europe’s largest annual Aids charity fund-raiser. The organisers are hoping the ball will raise more than US$1.6 million this year.

Pepping up with the Peggle An iPhone App for a game like PopCap’s Peggle is serious business

T
here’s something famously addictive about Peggle, a game that's been a hit on everything from the personal computer to a variety of mobile phones. Developer PopCap says that free sample PC versions of the popular title have been downloaded 50 million times (the number of actual purchases is a subset of that figure that the company declines to disclose).
Now the game is about to appear on the iPhone, news that may bode poorly for the productivity levels of the device’s owners. When the tech culture blog BoingBoing took note of the coming launch, the announcement seemed to inspire an amount of despair among its readers. This month, Apple’s App Store cracked the billion-download milestone — remarkable for an online store that has been open less than a year. So far, games and entertainment titles such as Peggle have been the store’s most popular category, but as Apple tends to share little data about App users except for a list of the store’s latest offerings, we turned to advertising software and research firm Medialets, which tracks usage of applications on mobile devices. Medialets has some findings about behaviour trends among 1,000 App Store users who agreed to install the company’s tracking program on their devices. While the company wouldn’t identify the usage and sales performance of
specific iPhone Apps, the findings provide an early sketch of this new industry’s consumers. According to Medialets, you’ll be more likely to see your fellow commuters playing Peggle on the bus or train home from work: apparently entertainment applications are used more at the end of the day. Developer PopCap, which plans to release the new version of Peggle this month, may enjoy a small, early lift in sales thanks to the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. Weekends, especially three-day weekends, are when iPhone users tend to be most active in downloading new applications. Even at $4.99, Peggle likely will appear near the top of the charts when it debuts at the App Store. Peggle has already been a strong seller on every device it has appeared on, and PopCap seems determined to get this title onto every gadget imaginable. “If your refrigerator had a screen, we’d put Peggle on it," quips PopCap’s Andrew Stein.

Tw e n t y - o n e - y e a r - o l d Ratthapark, who had not finished higher than eighth place in the world championship, deserved the applause as he battled through pain in his right hand and left foot to achieve the result. “I’m very happy – this is my best finish in the Championship. The team has done a great job setting up the bike and we got a fine reward with this fifth place. “We must now push on with good results.”
