t has been raining cats and dogs for the past week but I reckon only one in five men were carrying umbrellas. Why do the majority of men prefer getting soaked to carrying a brolly? Most of them seem to think that an umbrella makes them look less masculine. Maybe they should listen to loved ones who worry about them catching colds. Guys, think about it – it makes sense to stay dry.

Schools open, traffic jams

Two kindergarten students cry on their first day of school in Pattani yesterday.

DAILY XPRESS/CHAROON THONGNUAL

Bangkok motorists slowed to a crawl during rush hour in many areas yesterday as primary and secondary schools opened their doors for a new academic year. Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner Maj-General Panu Kerdlarpphol said roads that linked Krung Thon Bridge and Taksin Bridge were the most congested between 6am and 8am.

Skytrain ignored Cars were still bumper to bumper in Thon Buri’s Wong Wian Yai despite the opening of the new Skytrain route over the Chao Phya river. “Most parents didn’t switch from driving their children to schools as parking lots at the new stations are not yet available. So the traffic was jammed in the area and along the Taksin Bridge-Sathon Road route,” Panu said. Other congested areas included Samsen and Sukhumvit, where several large schools are located. “All in all, due to the absence of rain, the jams for the opening day of school were less heavy than last year,” said Panu. He added that traffic police, traffic volunteers and municipal officials were helping ease traffic all over the capital, especially in front of big schools. Police were at schools to encourage parents to find alternatives to driving their kids to school or at least spend less time around the entrances. Panu will board a helicopter this morning to pinpoint traffic hotspots and seek solutions to the problem. Wannapa Phetdee D A I LY X P R E S S

Black May’s black boxes? Porntip probes mysterious containers on seabed off Chon Buri amid rumours of human remains inside D A I LY X P R E S S

tiny underwater camera may soon slip through a hole in a mysterious container on the seabed off Chon Buri’s Sattahip district to check what is inside. “We have found a hole in the container through which groupers swim in and out,” Central Institute of Forensic Science director Porntip Rojanasunan revealed yesterday.

Skulls discovered Porntip has been assigned to investigate the containers after rumours spread that the bodies of those who died in the Black May incident were inside. Chon Buri’s Samaesan district chief

Pramote Towsakul said local people had in the past discovered human skulls in sunken containers but were too scared to report to the police. Porntip’s team has already located one of the containers. After examining the size of the barnacles attached to the container, officials say it has probably been on the seabed for more than 20 years. This prompted Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to point out that the mysterious container could not be related to the Black May incident, which took place 17 years ago. In 1992, pro-democracy street protesters in Bangkok faced a violent crackdown

XTRA T H E S E A’ S S E C R E T S The public is anxiously waiting to hear what is inside mysterious containers found on the seabed off Chon Buri’s Sattahip district. So far, rumours include: >> The remains of pro-democracy protesters killed during the Black May incident 17 years ago >> The remains of humantrafficking victims >> Toxic or industrial waste

from which many never returned home. Port Authority of Thailand acting director Sunida Sakulrattana said her agency was poring over old files to identify a company found carrying containers of industrial waste into Thailand’s seas about two or

three decades ago. “Officials turned a ship away for carrying industrial waste into Thailand without permission. Now, we have to find out whether the ship secretly dropped the containers on its way out,” Sunida said. Customs Department director-general Utid Tamwatin said if officials could see the serial number of the container, they would be able to identify its contents and origin. Meanwhile, the chairman of the Committee of the May 1992 Heroes’ Relatives, Adul Khiewboriboon, has submitted a letter urging the army to return the remains of protesters. He said three generals should know where the remains are located. “The three generals were involved in the Black May incident. They should know the answer.”

Gambling addict wants his cash back An Australian gambling addict who ended up losing his property portfolio was lured to Melbourne’s Crown Casino with promises of free flights, free accommodation and his own butler, a court was told yesterday. Former property tycoon Harry Kakavas is suing the casino for A$50 million (Bt1.3 billion) over his losses of A$20 million between 2004 and 2006. The self-confessed pathological gambler banned himself from the casino in 1995. But when he began flying the Pacific to gamble in Las Vegas, it’s alleged the casino offered inducements for him to return to Crown. Kakavas, 42, claims he was flown for free 30 times from his Gold Coast home to Melbourne. As well as trips on Crown’s VIP executive jet, Kakavas said he was handed wads of cash to start his sprees on the baccarat tables. D PA

TRIBAL JUSTICE OR

TORTURE TRIAL? UAE says ruler’s half brother appears in torture video; rights groups demand an open-court trial rather than private punishment A S S O C I AT E D P R E S S Dubai, United Arab Emirates

T

he public disgrace has been without precedent for a member of this Gulf country’s ruling family: first, the government publicly acknowledged that the half brother of the president had appeared in a torture video. Then it ordered his detention while a civil lawsuit moved ahead in the United States. But it’s the private deliberations over Sheik Issa bin Zayed Al Nahyan that could bring the biggest test for the Emirates’ long-enshrined twotier system of justice. The dilemma for Emirates

officials is whether to break tradition and order a courtroom trial for a member of the ruling elite as demanded by international rights groups, or whether to remain loyal to tribal codes and render any possible punishment away from the public eye.

‘Sodomy and beating’ International rights groups have demanded a full and open inquiry into the fiveyear-old video, released by one of Issa’s former business partners as part of a lawsuit filed in Houston. The suit charges Issa and other members of the ruling Al Nahyan

family with false imprisonment and torture in an attempt to get back the tapes. The former partner, Texas businessman Bassam Nabulsi, says the video shows the sheik sodomising and brutally beating an Afghan merchant who, Issa claims, cheated him on a grain deal. Issa is the half brother of Abu Dhabi’s ruler and UAE president Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Issa had entrusted Nabulsi, the sheik’s personal business manager, with the tapes, his financial records and investment documents before their falling out. Nabulsi’s US-based lawyer is convinced the sheik’s case will never get to court and doubts Issa will ever be punished.

Taiwanese prosecutors said yesterday they are probing claims that a pageant organiser conned a beauty contest by pretending his Australian models were in fact from many different countries. Models claiming to be from 24 countries took part in the contest in Taiwan last week, but organiser Huang Chih-hui later found that at least nine women, including winner Esma Voloder of Bosnia, were from Australia. She said she had been fooled by the scam, having paid air fares, hotel and other activities for the women for what was supposed to be an international event. A spokesman for Taoyuan district prosecutor’s office said it was probing fraud and document-forgery charges against Australian organiser Gavin Dooley. Dooley told prosecutors that Australia is a nation of immigrants and the contestants all have dual nationalities. The Australian-born winner, Voloder, said her parents were Bosnian refugees and that she considered herself Bosnian. – AFP

Canadian turntablist Alain Macklovitch drops into town for a night at Q Bar By Manta Klangboonkrong D A I LY X P R E S S

M

ontreal-born DJ and turntablist A-Trak, real name Alain Macklovitch, was viewed as the prodigy of the ’90s, picking up five world championships as he built his skills and performed alongside Kanye West. Tomorrow night he’ll be in Bangkok, manning the deck at Q Bar and mixing his refreshing hybrids of hip-hop and techno tunes. He found time to trade emails with us before boarding his flight.

What are you working on now?

Lots of stuff, as always! I’m doing a remix for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs that I’m really excited about because I love the song. I just recorded a project with Armand Van Helden by the name of “Duck Sauce” and I’m starting to plan an A-Trak album! Still touring with Kanye West?

XTRA THIRD RAIL >> A-Trak performs at Q Bar tomorrow from 11pm. Entry with two drinks is Bt700. >> Q Bar is on Sukhumvit Soi 11, near Nana Skytrain station. COURTESY OF Q BAR

>> Dress nice and bring your ID. >> Call (02) 252 3274 or visit www.QBarBangkok.com.

I stopped touring with him a year ago but I still collaborate with him from time to time. I just recorded some scratches for a song he did with Kid Cudi, Common and Lady Gaga called “Poker Face”. How did it all start?

I started with the technical stuff when I was 13, experimenting on my dad’s record player. The first couple of years of my career were devoted to learning all these techniques and entering competitions. As time went by, I gradually got more interested in playing records and rocking parties.

I LOVE BEAT JUGGLING – TAKING TWO COPIES OF A RECORD AND REARRANGING THE MUSIC ... DJ A-Trak What’s your favourite technique?

I love beat juggling – taking two copies of a record and rearranging the music to make new patterns. Who’s your idol?

I look up to my older brother Dave, both on a musical level and a personal one. He’s really gifted and a very inspiring person, I’m lucky to have him around. Might you collaborate with your brother’s group Chromeo?

Chromeo and I have collaborated many times. We just don’t make a big deal out of it. I recorded the scratches on their first big hit “Needy Girl”, but I did it under an alias (Kool DJ Alain M) because they asked me to scratch like it was 1982. What’s the show at Q going to be like?

Fun! Expect to hear a wide variety of music, lots of stuff you never heard before, and it will probably move very fast.

50 Who’ll be on the next ‘Academy Fantasia’?

THE SELECTION of contestants for the next season of “True Academy Fantasia” will be broadcast live on Wednesday night, when 50 finalists from regional auditions will be culled down to 20. The contestants, all vying to be on the sixth season of cable-TV network TrueVisions’ 24-hour reality talent channel, will take the stage at the Aksra Theatre in the King Power Complex. “We’ve selected the 50 people from 100 candidates and we thought the live broadcast would be a chance for fans to catch up with the show before we start our reality-show broadcast on June 29,” says producer Atthapol na Bangxang. TrueVisions plans to bring something new to this year’s show, Atthapol says, but he didn’t elaborate further. The first live concert of all the “AF6” contestants will be on July 4 at the Thunder Dome at Impact in Muang Thong Thani. That will be broadcast live on True Inside, True Music channels and on Modernine TV. Wednesday night’s broadcast will be from 7 to 9 on True Inside, TrueVisions channel 19. esplendent in a figure-hugging grey and black dress, Sorrawee Nattee wept tears of joy after being crowned Thailand’s most beautiful transsexual. Sorrawee took the top prize in the Miss Tiffany’s Universe pageant on Friday in Pattaya, topping 29 other transsexuals and receiving a Honda car and

Bt100,000. “I’m very excited,” the willowy 20-year-old from Songkhla said. Appearing overwhelmed by hordes of photographers, camera crews and well-wishers, the scene played out before a live television audience of 15 million people. Against a soundtrack of thumping music, the pageant featured an Italian Casanovatheme number involving gondolas and masked dancers. A pirate ship drifted across the stage swirled in thick “fog”. The packed theatre was a mix

of transsexuals, gay and straight couples and Western tourists. Dresses ranged from flowing white ensembles to shimmering red numbers and pink miniskirts. “She had smart answers and is very beautiful,” was how judge Marut Sarowat, a wellknown television and stage director, assessed Sorrawee. Asked to name her hero, Sorrawee earned loud applause by naming her mother and father, and as the evening progressed, cheers for her grew louder as the audience urged their favourite to victory.

Pepping up with the Peggle An iPhone App for a game like PopCap’s Peggle is serious business

By Mike Musgrove THE WASHINGTON POST

T

here’s something famously addictive about Peggle, a game that's been a hit on everything from the personal computer to a variety of mobile phones. Developer PopCap says that free sample PC versions of the popular title have been downloaded 50 million times (the number of actual purchases is a subset of that figure that the company declines to disclose).

Now the game is about to appear on the iPhone, news that may bode poorly for the productivity levels of the device’s owners. When the tech culture blog BoingBoing took note of the coming launch, the announcement seemed to inspire an amount of despair among its readers. This month, Apple’s App Store cracked the billion-download milestone — remarkable for an online store that has been open less than a year. So far, games and entertainment titles such as Peggle have been the store’s most popular category, but as Apple tends to share little data about App users except for a list of the store’s latest offerings, we turned to advertising software and research firm Medialets, which tracks usage of applications on mobile devices. Medialets has some findings about behaviour trends among 1,000 App Store users who agreed to install the company’s tracking program on their devices. While the company wouldn’t identify the usage and sales performance of

specific iPhone Apps, the findings provide an early sketch of this new industry’s consumers. According to Medialets, you’ll be more likely to see your fellow commuters playing Peggle on the bus or train home from work: apparently entertainment applications are used more at the end of the day. Developer PopCap, which plans to release the new version of Peggle this month, may enjoy a small, early lift in sales thanks to the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. Weekends, especially three-day weekends, are when iPhone users tend to be most active in downloading new applications. Even at $4.99, Peggle likely will appear near the top of the charts when it debuts at the App Store. Peggle has already been a strong seller on every device it has appeared on, and PopCap seems determined to get this title onto every gadget imaginable. “If your refrigerator had a screen, we’d put Peggle on it," quips PopCap’s Andrew Stein.

3-1 Bordeaux’s hopes of ending their 10-year wait for the French League title were boosted when defending champions Lyon beat Marseille.

Utd keeper misses C-League final Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster was ruled out of the Champions League final yesterday after undergoing surgery on his right thumb. The 26-year-old Foster will be sidelined for at least nine weeks, missing the May 27 final against Barcelona and the final Premier League round as well as England’s summer internationals. “It is big blow for Ben as not only will he miss the Champions League final but also England’s summer internationals,” United manager Alex Ferguson said. – AP

Yankees’ last at-bat magic goes on The New York Yankees climbed above .500 by winning three straight games in their final atbat for the first time since 1972. The Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 yesterday on Johnny Damon’s game-ending home run in the bottom of the 10th inning at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees also celebrated at home plate after last-at-bat victories on May 16, when Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat Minnesota 6-4, and on May 15, when they scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Twins 5-4.

“To walk off three times in a row is pretty fun,” Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira said. The last time the Yankees won three consecutive games in their final at-bat at home was August 2729, 1972. Such victories are known in Johnny Damon baseball as “walk-offs,” since the game ends automatically. New York have won a seasonhigh five straight games to move to 20-17, and hosts the Twins tonight in the finale of their four-game Major League Baseball series. - Bloomberg

England eye series win over WIndies Tim Bresnan took his first wickets in Test cricket as England moved to the brink of a 2-0 series win over the West Indies. The tourists, who had been made to follow-on, were 167 for eight at lunch on the last day of the second and final Test, having lost five wickets in the session in total. That left the hosts needing just a further two wickets for victory, with the West Indies still 92 runs behind England’s first innings 569 for six declared.

Amr Zaki

Egyptian striker Amr Zaki is set to leave Wigan after manager Steve Bruce announced that he would not take up the option of making his loan deal permanent. Zaki has been badly hit by injuries and his relationship with Bruce has turned sour. “The writing has been on the wall for a while now but it’s a shame, it really is. He had a wonderful chance over here but he was badly advised I think, he listened to the wrong people.” – AFP

Chelsea players applaud manager Guus Hiddink, centre, at the end of the game on Sunday.

HEY, BLUE SPENDERS Exiting Hiddink says Chelsea must buy to stop United AFP, London

C

helsea coach Guus Hiddink bid an emotional farewell to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but warned his successor he’ll need to spend big money if the Londoners are to stop the Manchester United juggernaut. Since being drafted in to replace Luiz Felipe Scolari, Hiddink has narrowly missed out on a Champions League final spot, guaranteed a top four league finish and could still win the FA Cup. But the Dutchman

insists that Chelsea don’t yet have a squad capable of competing with United who retained their English Premier League title on Saturday. He believes the new manager will need more strength in depth to overhaul the champions. “When you want to compete, you have to renew your squad almost every year,” he said. “To be realistic in the upcoming years we have players who are ageing. “It is up to the new management. It’s my humble advice to bring in even more depth, but people in the club know that. “For the FA Cup, League Cup,

Premier League and Champions League, you need a squad of real depth in quality. You need to be able to use a lot of players, like Manchester United.” He admitted he will be haunted by a nagging sense of regret when he walks away from Chelsea after the FA Cup final. “I have many second thoughts. Sometimes third thoughts. You cannot avoid them,” he said. “You do not have a button to turn them off, but that is how it is. “When I have to leave and I see the reaction of the players and how they have worked, I feel a kind of sadness.”

Real job is interesting: Wenger

PARTY-POOPERS Mallorca line up to salute league winners Barca – then crash the party AFP, Madrid

arcelona coach Pep Guardiola played down his role behind his team’s league and Kings Cup double, preferring to heap the praise on his players. In his debut season Guardiola, 38, lifted Barcelona’s first domestic double since 1998, but coyly shrugged off the plaudits. “With other players I would not be a champion but they certainly would be with another coach,” said Guardiola. “I appreciate the praise but it is the talent of the players and their humility to work hard that has taken us this far. “I have to pay tribute to them and I would also like to congratulate Real Madrid for bringing out the best in us. “In the second half of the season they gave us a lesson in how you should always carry on looking forward.” Guardiola won six league titles as a Barca player, but this was his first as a manager and he admitted the achievement felt strange. “It is similar feeling but now there is this fictitious authority where it seems you give the orders but don’t carry them out,” added Guardiola. After two years without a trophy under Frank Rijkaard Guardiola came to Barcelona at a difficult time and striker Samuel Eto’o said it was an inspired appointment.

Mallorca players celebrate after scoring against Barcelona at the Ono stadium in Palma de Mallorca. “Guardiola is just want we needed after two difficult years,” said Eto’o. “He has helped us to discover what was missing.” Barcelona were saluted as champions as Real Mallorca lined-up a guard of honour at the Ono Stadium on Sunday before gatecrashing the title party with a 2-1 win. Eto’o gave Barcelona the lead, but missed a last-minute penalty which would have salvaged a point. Barca rested key stars such as Lionel Messi and Xavi, with the Champions League final against Manchester United on May 27 still to come, and several homegrown talents started against Mallorca. “I can’t reproach the team at all,” said Guardiola. “We had a

lot of players who had not played much and they had to tonight. Eto’o had his chances, including the penalty miss, but I can’t fault him as he has scored goals all season and will continue to do so.” Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid took pole position in the Champions League race with a 1-0 home win over rivals Valencia. Diego Forlan scored from the penalty spot on the half hour mark for his 28th goal of the season just one behind Eto’o in the goalscoring charts. Atletico leapfrog Valencia into fourth holding a two-point cushion over both Valencia and Villarreal with just two games left and are on course to qualify for the Champions League for the second successive season.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that coaching Real Madrid would be “obviously interesting for any coach”. Florentino Perez announced his candidacy last week to become Madrid president for a second time in the club’s elections in the off-season. He reportedly tried to sign Wenger during his first stint and has been linked again with the Arsenal manager. “With Perez, the project will be obviously interesting for any coach,” Wenger told French TV on Sunday. Asked whether he would be tempted, he replied: “I’m a coach.” Wenger, who says he will stay at Arsenal at least until his contract expires in 2011, wouldn’t reveal if he’d been in contact with Perez. “Allow me to remain discreet on that matter,” Wenger said.

Redknapp angry Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has criticised Roman Pavlychenko for his “disrespectful” reaction after being substituted during the match against Manchester City. Redknapp waited on the touchline to shake his hand, but the Russia striker ignored him before walking straight down the tunnel at White Hart Lane. “I don’t like that,” Redknapp said. “The fans pay their money to watch and when a player runs down the tunnel it’s disrespectful.”

Hughes stays, say Manchester City owners AP, Manchester, England

Mark Hughes has been promised another year as coach.

anchester City owners have quashed speculation that Mark Hughes will be replaced as manager by saying he will stay on at the Premier League club for next season at least. City have failed to make an impact in English football despite the vast wealth of their new owners from Abu Dhabi, leading to suggestions that the administration might look for

another big name to help the club catch up with the traditional Premier League powerhouses. Once more, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal will fill the top four places in the league while City, after a poor start to the season, can finish no higher than ninth. “I have been surprised at all the speculation because I have always been consistent with everyone on the subject of the manager,” Man City chairman

Khaldoon Al Mubarak said. “Every time I have spoken I have said we have the highest confidence in Mark and I would like to reiterate that now. Mark will be our manager next season. Nothing has changed.” Al Mubarak said his Abu Dhabi United Group had added stability to the club. “There has been incredible and unnecessary pressure put on Mark from outside the club. From my perspective, I think we

have come a long way and I am looking for a big finish to the season,” he said. “We have accomplished things since January and now we can start focusing on next season. “This is a club that has had 10 managers in 15 years and changes of ownership. It is hard to believe we have ever had a real preseason. This time we will have that and will do so with a year’s experiences behind us.”

urkish native Hedo Turkoglu had 25 points with 12 assists, Dwight Howard added 12 points and 16 rebounds with five blocks and the Magic dethroned defending champions Celtics 101-82 to win their Eastern Conference semi-final series in seven games. The Celtics had been a perfect 32-0 record when leading a series 3-2 and a 20-5 all-time record in game seven, including 17-3 at home. However, the Magic led virtually the entire game to break that perfect mark. “I would like to say we played the game exactly the way we wanted,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “We actually played it better.”

Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard goes in for the dunk. “When you look at a team that’s 32-0 when leading a series 3-2, and then you win by 19 points, that’s a big win,” he said. “I can’t say that I’ve ever had one that I’ve ever been happier about.”

For their first conference finals appearance since 1996, the third-seeded Magic are to meet LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers beginning Wednesday night. The topseeded Cavaliers have been off

since May 11 after double-digit sweeps against Detroit and Atlanta. Ray Allen scored 23 points, and Paul Pierce had 16 for the Celtics, who were crippled by the second-half loss to All-Star forward Kevin Garnett to a right knee sprain. “You can’t cry over spilled milk, but I honestly believe we’re the best team in the NBA with healthy guys,” Pierce said. With their run for the NBA Championship ring in serious jeopardy, Pau Gasol and the Los Angeles Lakers left no doubt they were moving on. The Spanish centre powered for 21 points with 18 rebounds as the Lakers ripped the visiting Houston Rockets 89-70 in a decisive game seven to win their Western Conference semi-final playoff series. “I’m proud of the way Pau played,” said Lakers leader Kobe Bryant, who had 14 points.

ritty Ratthapark “Feem” Wilairot rode his way to fifth place, the best showing of his fledgling Moto GP career, in the 250cc race at the French MotoGP. It was a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the Honda PTT SAG rider, who had a miserable time in the two previous races. He crashed out in Japan before clinging onto the last point in Valencia, Spain, a fortnight ago. Tw e n t y - o n e - y e a r - o l d Ratthapark, who had not finished higher than eighth place in the world championship, deserved the applause as he battled through pain in his right hand and left foot to achieve the result. “I’m very happy – this is my best finish in the Championship. The team has done a great job setting up the bike and we got a fine reward with this fifth place. “We must now push on with good results.”

had to wait more than an hour for Johnson to finish his round. It was worth the wait, but it didn’t last long. Johnson quickly won it with a 6-iron approach to set up his winning putt on the par-4 18th. Driscoll’s birdie attempt from 27 feet rolled 2 feet wide. “You want to put the pressure on your opponent. There’s no doubt about it,” Johnson said. “It’s not like he hit a bad shot. He hit 20-plus feet. He hit a good putt. So it just kind of went my way.” Meanwhile, Ji Young Oh closed with a 2-under 70 Sunday to win the $2 million Sybase Classic by four shot. Meanwhile, Irish amateur Shane Lowry rounded off a remarkable debut on the European Tour by winning the Irish Open title on Sunday after a sudden death play-off against Robert Rock of England. Lowry had missed a threefoot putt to win on the 72nd hole.

an Cleary scored twice against the team that drafted him, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Sunday. Cleary’s second goal came midway through the third period, 1:27 after Mikael Samuelsson’s goahead score, for the defending Stanley Cup champions. Detroit’s Chris Osgood made 30 saves, and Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 38 shots for the Blackhawks, who gave up an empty-net goal to Henrik Zetterberg. Adam Burish gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead 5:25 in, but Cleary tied it a few minutes later and Johan Franzen put Detroit in front 2-1 late in the second period. Game 2 is tomorrow in Detroit. “I came here as a tryout,” the 30-year-old Canadian said. “They gave me a chance to be a player.”
