espite repeated tragedies, ugly initiation rituals continue to haunt freshmen’s lives. Last week, a first-year student at Rajamangala Tawan-ok University of Technology’s Uthen Thawai campus revealed that she was forced to eat inkstained paper and handfuls of chillies by older students. After she lodged a complaint with the Pavena Hongsakul Foundation, Uthen Thawai launched a probe yesterday. Uthen Thawai’s acting rector Suebpong Muangchu admitted that despite serious efforts, it remained difficult to eradicate violent initiations. Sompong Sheethaisong, dean of the facDAILY

ulty of engineering, said he had done everything he could to stop the rituals. “But deep down, I really have no idea how to end this problem,” he said. Last year, Uthen Thawai hit the headlines after first-year student Krissana Chatsuwan sustained fatal head injuries during an initiation in Prachuap Khiri Khan. “I can’t come to terms with what happened. He was my only son,” said Krissana’s father Prachern. He made a plea that his son be the last to die in an initiation ritual. However, that wasn’t the case. Just months later, 16-yearold Nirojsak Intachote sus-

Many other victims have been left with serious wounds and painful memories. Last year, Suradej Suwanrat – a first-year student at Rajamangala University of Technology Bangkok – was badly burned along with two others at an initiation rite. Questioned by police, the senior students involved said

the rite was something they had been through in their first year. Back in 2005, a first-year at Rajamangala University of Technology Isaan described being forced through 10 days of rituals with other juniors that included tugs of war with their sexual organs, setting their pubic hair on fire and crawling on cement floors with hands tied. He refused to return to the college. A year later, more than 20 first-year students at Thanyaburi Technical College were herded into a derelict house in Nakhon Nayok by seniors who forced them to strip naked. “They lit candles and dripped hot wax onto our skin,” a victim said. “Those who resisted were punched and kicked. Some of us were beaten unconscious”. A passing police patrol eventually scared the seniors off.

After first-year students complained to the Pavena Foundation yesterday that seniors had forced them to eat chillis and paper, Rajamangala University of Technology’s Uthen Thawai campus has ordered an end to all student initiation ceremonies. Following a meeting yesterday on the Uthen Thawai case, Education Minister Jurin Laksanawisit instructed Higher Education Commission (HEC) secretary-general Sumet Yaemnoon to assign a committee to investigate whether Uthen Thawai authorities had allowed senior students to violate the Education Ministry’s regulations on student initiations. The committee would report in three days and students or college executives found guilty of violations would be punished accordingly, said Jurin.

Protection for students Sumet said the HEC had asked college executives to ensure that senior students didn’t threaten or hurt those freshmen who wanted to remain at Uthen Thawai. Dean of the Architecture Faculty Sompong Cheethaisong said a meeting of teachers and students yesterday had decided to cancel all initiations until everything was back to normal. Affirming that the university had a scale of punishments – verbal warning, academic points deduction, one-semester suspension, two-semester suspension, expulsion – Sompong said that five students had been expelled and 100 given a two-semester suspension last year for their involvement in a hazing ceremony that led to the death of a student. “B

illy Elliot”, the big British musical about a coal miner’s son who dreams to dance, bowled over Broadway on Sunday, winning 10 Tonys, including best musical and a unique best actor prize for the three young performers who share the title character. The trio – David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish – traded off thank yous during

their acceptance speech, shyly thanking people associated with the show only by their first name. Kulish told the cheering crowd at Radio City Music Hall: “We want to say to all the kids out there who might want to dance, ‘Never give up’.” “Billy Elliot” collected eight other awards, including director of a musical, book of a musical and choreography, but its composer Elton John was upset

for best score. That award was taken by “Next to Normal”, which seemed to stun composer Tom Kitt and lyricist Brian Yorkey. Alice Ripley, who portrays battling mental illness, received the actress musical prize. “God of Carnage”, Yasmina Reza’s savage comedy of manners about two liberal, middleclass couples whose children get into a fight, was named best play and picked up two other major awards, one for its director, Matthew Warchus, and the other for actress Marcia Gay Harden. Police probe sex video shot on HK bus Police in Hong Kong yesterday were investigating a video circulating on the Internet showing a teenage girl performing a sex act on a man on a bus to earn money so she could buy a designer handbag. The six-minute video, featuring the 17-year-old student, was shot on the upper deck of the bus, which had few other passengers on board. The girl looked up at the camera, aware she was being filmed, and commented on the “peaceful surroundings” outside the bus. Police are investigating whether the video is linked to a trend called “compensated dating” – a euphemism for paid sex with young students – believed to have spread to Hong Kong from Japan. – D P A

THINK TWICE ABOUT ‘GREEN’ TRANSPORT A F P , Paris

The 18.83-metre-long lobster roll at the Old Port Festival in Portland, Maine, on Sunday.

Giant lobster roll rolls into record books What could be the world’s longest lobster roll turned out to be even longer than expected. The giant sandwich unveiled on Sunday during Maine’s Old Port Festival in Portland measured 18.83 metres – more than 30 centimetres longer than organisers were aiming for. It also included a few extra kilos of lobster meat – 21.77 kilograms in all – plus 15 litres of Miracle Whip and a special blend of herbs and seasonings. A local roller derby team helped carry the sandwich to the festival, where it was cut into sections and sold to raise money for a youth association. The association intends to get the roll certified by Guinness World Records. AP

ou worry a lot about the environment and do everything you can to reduce your carbon footprint. So you always prefer to take the train or the bus rather than a plane, and avoid using a car whenever you can, faithful to the belief that this inflicts less harm on the planet. Well, there could be a nasty surprise in store for you, for taking public transport may not be as green as you automatically think, says a new US study. Its authors point out an array of factors that are often unknown to the public. These are hidden or displaced emissions that ramp up the simple “tailpipe” tally, which is based on how much carbon is spewed out by the fossil fuels used to make a trip. Environmental engineers Mikhail Chester and Arpad

IT COULD BE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY TO DRIVE INTO THE CITY – EVEN IN AN SUV – RATHER THAN TAKE A SUBURBAN TRAIN.IT DEPENDS ON SEAT OCCUPANCY AND THE UNDERLYING CARBON COST OF THE MODE OF TRANSPORT. Horvath at the University of California say that when these costs are included, a more challenging picture emerges. In some circumstances, for instance, it could be more ecofriendly to drive into the city – even in an SUV – rather than take a suburban train. It depends on seat occupancy and the underlying carbon cost of the mode of transport. The pair give an example of how the use of oil, gas or coal

to generate electricity to power trains can skew the picture. Boston has a metro system with high energy efficiency. The trouble is, 82 per cent of the energy to drive it comes from dirty fossil fuels. A car or even a 4x4 that is fully occupied may be responsible for less greenhouse gas per kilometre travelled per person than a suburban train that is a quarter full, the researchers calculate.

e’ve seen “Jump” and “Break out!” and now we are soon to see what paved the way for this vibrant trend of non-verbal performance. “Nanta”, a fine blend of traditional Korean drumming, cooking, comedy plus Western-style staging and audience participation, is coming to Bangkok’s Royal Paragon Hall next month. “Energy and entertainment glue every member of the audience to the show,” says Jae Yong Lim, performance marketing manager of PMC Networks, the show’s producer. “Then, there’s rhythm, and you don’t need your brain, but your heart, to feel it.” There are three venues in South Korea where you can watch “Nanta” 365 days a year – two in Seoul, one in Jeju. Last October, I headed to the 300seat Nanta Theatre, where three performances are scheduled daily. I was amazed that, after more than a decade, the show is still fresh and full of energy.

“We regularly audition new performers. We look for their stage acting skills, because that’s the most important for our show, and then we teach them percussion techniques. Most of them are theatre graduates.”

No language barrier Created in 1997 – way before K-Fever – with the concept “the most Korean is the most universal”, “Nanta” had world domination in mind from the beginning. “Language is a major barrier in performing globally, that’s why we chose to produce a non-verbal show. “‘Nanta’ is set in the kitchen where everyone can easily share the experience, and that’s why we’ve lasted this long. It’s now been seen by more than four million worldwide.” The show’s international itinerary started in 1999 with a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Across the Atlantic, the show, retitled “Cookin’”, enjoyed a year run off-Broadway in 2004, where CBS dubbed it “Benihana goes berserk!” In Southeast Asia, “Nanta” has been to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and yet Bangkok has never had the full version of the show – a much-shorter act was presented at the Dusit Thani Hotel and the Pattaya International Music Festival, as part of South Korea’s tourism promotion. Why the long wait? “It’s very simple,” Jae says. “No one here has invited us before.”

>> Tickets are Bt900 to Bt 1,800 at Thaiticketmaster. Many discounts are available. >> On the Web: www.Nanta.co.kr.

The key to the global success of ‘Nanta’ is that the show is entirely non-verbal.

hen the filmmakers at Pixar watched a documentary about the Venezuelan rain forest, they wondered at first if that place really existed. Looking for a location to develop their next animated feature, they decided to travel to that magical place. Not only did they hone their story there, but they found another “character” – the landscape itself, much of which inspired the film’s dreamlike locations. Director Pete Docter and story supervisor Ronnie del Carmen explain.

What places that you visited can we see in the movie? Docter: We pretty much fo-

cused our trip around the tepuis (table-top mountains) in Venezuela and Brazil ... We went in a helicopter to another tepui ... and then went to the Angel Falls. We changed it a little bit in the movie.

How did you decide to focus on that area?

We were looking for places to put our characters in and put them stuck together. We thought a tropical island ... [But] we saw a documentary by Adrian Warren and he came to Pixar to show us some other places ... We said, “We need to go there!” This place is unique, very specific, we really needed to experience what it’s like to put it in the movie. Seeing those landscapes, what did you think? Del Carmen: That was the

most magnificent trip that most of us would take in our lifetime. The only thing that I can compare it to is ... “Jurassic Park”. You find yourself being so small. It takes your breath away and you stare at it for a long time. It’s a memorable moment not only to stand in front of a tepui, but a tepui you are about to climb. How much did the location change the story? Docter: We spent three days

drawing, painting, taking lots of

photographs. It really affected the film both on the images and the story ... Really, a lot of ideas grew out of this mysterious rock shapes that look like people. Del Carmen: We had ideas of what we would be doing but not what they’d be feeling ... And also how the rocks looks like, how slippery the road is, how big things are: (the characters) can walk, but is gonna be hard. We got to know the characters more and how they would behave in this landscape. My feeling is that the location is also a character in the movie. How do you expect the movie to affect those places in terms of tourism? Docter: I think, boy! When

people see this ... When we have a feature of the documentary on the DVD they will want to go. I hope everybody is respectful of the locations and doesn’t ruin them ‘cause they are really beautiful places. > > AT T H E C I N E M A “Up” opens in theatres in Thailand on Thursday.

Kalamare became dissatisfied with the unnamed bank’s service after she couldn’t use her plastic to book a plot of land. She called her bank to get more credit for the deal, but was turned town. Funny that the bank staff didn’t seek advice from a supervisor – Kalamare is one of Thailand’s highest-paid TV hosts. She is also an A-grade customer of the bank – in her own words, one of the top 10. “What if I need a emergency funds and what if it’s a matter of life and death?” Kalamare declared. SKIN DEEP It’s no sweat! What treatments are available for excessive sweating?

Is it true that I need sunscreen even in the shade and while driving in a car? Absolutely. While shade may reduce UV exposure anywhere from 50 to 90 per cent, I’ve seen patients who have become dark or developed brown spots from the reflection of snow, sand, water and even the sidewalk. So, if you’re going to be outdoors, whether in direct sun or in the shade, you should wear at least an SPF 30 and reapply it every three to four hours. While most windshields block sunburn-causing UVB rays, they don’t block UVA rays, which cause ageing and skin cancer. If you are commuting during peak sun hours everyday, I suggest getting your car windows tinted with the strongest available UVA filter. And besides wearing sunscreen, you might also cover your face with a mask, scarf and sunglasses. A Botox injection would most likely help. Botox works by blocking the release of the chemical responsible for stimulating the sweat glands. The treatment lasts approximately six to eight months and you would need to repeat the injection when excessive sweating returns, as the nerves start working normally again. SmartLipo is another, minimally invasive procedure and uses a tiny laser to destroy sweat glands.

Collingwood hails brave England England captain Paul Collingwood praised the “brave” way the hosts kept themselves alive in the ICC World Twenty20 after a 48run win over Pakistan here at the Oval. Kevin Pietersen, Collingwood who missed the dramatic Dutch defeat with an Achilles injury, returned to make 58 in a total of 185 for five on Sunday before three wickets in the powerplay, with fast bowler Stuart Broad taking two in two balls, put paid to Pakistan’s chase.

“That performance is what we needed,” Collingwood told reporters. “We showed a lot of character. “Friday was a massive blow to us, so it was fair to say we were under quite a lot of pressure to put in a performance like that. “From ball one we proved how much we wanted it and had them under pressure. “People put their hands up and all 11 can be very proud of themselves. They showed how brave they are as blokes. And I am now more excited than I was before the Netherlands game.” – AFP

Kaka to set to sign for Real: press

Roger Federer kisses his grand-slam completing French Open trophy on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

ROGER’S TRIUMPH Beaten Soderling says Fed is best player of all time AP, Paris

W

ith his first French Open title, Roger Federer strengthened the argument he’s the best tennis player ever. He completed a career Grand Slam, something only five other men have done. He won his 14th major title to equal the record held by Pete Sampras. He played in his 19th Grand Slam final to match Ivan Lendl’s record. The stylish Swiss caught a break in Paris and made the most of it, winning the title by beating the man who beat Federer’s nemesis, Rafael Nadal. Federer swept surprise finalist Robin Soderling 6-1 7-6 (1), 6-4 on Sunday. “I don’t know if we’ll ever know who was the greatest of all time, but I’m definitely happy to be right up there,” said the 27-year-old Federer, who plans to play into his 30s. “I think it should be judged at the very end, you know. How well did I do? Good? Great? Very good? Or medium? I don’t know. It’s for other people to decide.” On his fourth try in a French

Open final, and first against someone other than Nadal, Federer came through. The list of Grand Slam champions who never won at Roland Garros includes Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Sampras. “I’m obviously happy for Roger,” Sampras said from Los Angeles, where he lives. “Now that he has won in Paris, I think it just more solidifies his place in history as the greatest player that played the game, in my opinion.” But is Federer – who acknowledged relief at avoiding Nadal in the final – even the best player of his generation? With the career Slam complete, the biggest blemish on Federer’s resume is a poor record versus Nadal. Federer is 7-13 against the Spaniard and has lost the past three times they’ve met in Grand Slam finals. Soderling, a Swede seeded 23rd, eased Federer’s title path at Roland Garros by upsetting four-time defending champion Nadal in the fourth round. “I knew the day Rafa won’t be in the finals, I will be there and I will win,” Federer said. “I always knew that, and I believed in it. That’s exactly

what happened.” Andre Agassi, the most recent man to complete the career Grand Slam when he won at Roland Garros 10 years ago, presented Federer with the trophy. The other men to win all four major titles were Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Don Budge and Fred Perry. This title came after Federer lost to Nadal at the French Open and Wimbledon last year, and at the Australian Open in February. Federer also lost the No. 1 ranking to Nadal last August. “Sounds like an Achilles’ heel, but at the same time, what [Federer] has done is unmatched,” Agassi said. “We’re watching two guys in the prime of their years compete against each other – and Nadal has an answer for him. But what criteria do you use to judge best ever? Roger’s numbers – it’s hard to disagree with. His domination on different surfaces – hard to disagree with.” Soderling’s vote: Federer. “I never played anyone playing that fast,” said Soderling, who is 0-10 against Federer. “He doesn’t have any weaknesses at all. He really deserves to be called the best player of all time.”

MONSTER RULES F1 Button and his Brawn car accused of killing sport DPA, Istanbul

ebastian Vettel’s mistake was welcome, but there was no debate that Jenson Button would have nonetheless won the Turkish Grand Prix in “a monster of a car”. But the dominance of Button and his Brawn team makes some believe that it is starting to kill the excitement in the fast sport. “He is killing Formula One with his victories,” said the headline of Germany’s Bild daily on yesterday. “The biggest boredom in F1 history looms in the final 10 races.” That is not out of the question, given the way that Button praised his car after coasting to his sixth win in seven season races, the other being a thirdplace finish in the China GP won by Vettel. “Thank you. You’ve built me a monster of a car. You guys are absolute legends,” Button shouted via team radio after crossing the line. He added later: “Today the car was the best it’s felt all year. We have been quick on other occasions and the car has been a bit loose and hasn’t really suited my style but today the car was immense. It really was ... It just keeps getting better.” “I would love to win every single race this year but I’ve got another 19 guys on the circuit who want to stop me doing that. I’m in a good position, for sure. This race showed that we do have the best car but I think that we have the best package.” Vettel could have made life at

But the German Red Bull driver briefly slid off the track later in the first lap and Button gratefully accepted the gift for what was then an unchallenged victory with a lead of up to 20 seconds before easing up in the final laps. “It would not have made a big difference as Jenson was just too quick today, so I think I wouldn’t have been able to hold him anyway,” said Vettel. Mark Webber, who also got ahead of Vettel to finish second, wasted no thoughts on victory because “this guy who was on

I WOULD LOVE TO WIN EVERY SINGLE RACE THIS YEAR BUT I’VE GOT ANOTHER 19 GUYS ON THE CIRCUIT. Jenson Button another planet.” British daily The Times said: “Jenson Button’s crushing win

in Turkey proves him class apart again.” It added that Button “is miles ahead in the title race and looks unstoppable.” But Brawn team principle Ross Brawn said he is still not thinking about the title despite Button’s huge lead with 61 points over team-mate Rubens Barrichello (35), with Vettel third on 29 points. After all, it was not all perfect for Brawn because they had to swallow their first retirement of the season when Barrichello was pulled in with 11 laps left after a series of problems. The frustrated Brazilian moaned that “the bad luck seems to be happening too much on my side.”

With all of the talk of costcutting in Formula One, somebody forgot to slash ticket prices for the Turkish Grand Prix. F1 is in crisis over controversial team budget caps for 2010 yet empty stands were an unwanted backdrop at the Istanbul Park Circuit, with only 36,000 tickets sold for the three-day event. “I am looking forward to Silverstone for many reasons because I think it will be a great atmosphere unlike here. There was no one here,” Red Bull driver Mark Webber said on Sunday after finishing runner-up to race winner Jenson Button. With tickets ranging from 95 to 700 Turkish Liras ($62 to $455), drivers thought that organisers should have just opened up the gates to the public. “We should have let them in for free at the end,” Webber said. “Jenson and I spoke about this on the parade lap, that on the day maybe we should have made an announcement yesterday or even this morning to get some more people in here to let them experience our sport and that’s a shame that it didn’t happen.” The issue will be high on the Formula One Teams Association’s priority list. “We have concentrated too much about other things and it looks like we don’t care about the public, about the show,” Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali said. “It’s like to be at a football stadium that is totally empty.” Empty seats have become normal at F1 tracks in China, Bahrain and Malaysia. – A P

Bayern’s Franck Ribery has been linked with Real Madrid.

ranck Ribery should renew his contract at Bayern Munich or leave, likely for Real Madrid, Munich president Franz Beckenbauer said in the Bild daily. “I see only two solutions: Ribery renews his contract prematurely so that we can close the issue. or we release him,” Beckenbauer said. New Real president Florentino Perez is after the

winger, who himself, on French TV, has only ruled out a move to England where Chelsea and Manchester United were said to be interested. Ribery, 26, came to Munich in 2007 and has a contract there until 2011. Beckenbauer made it clear that he wants the Frenchman to stay as he rates him among the three best players in the world with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. “Bayern will be worse off

without him,” Beckenbauer said, adding “It will be difficult to keep Ribery if he wants to leave.” The transfer fee has been estimated at around US$84 million and there is also speculation that Bayern could get one of Real’s Dutchman Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben or Rafael van der Vaart on top of the money. Munich’s new Dutch coach Louis van Gaal is said to be keen

on a playmaker like Sneijder or a winger like Robben.

West Ham sold English Premier League side West Ham United announced yesterday they’d been sold to an asset management group where the majority stake is held by an Icelandic bank. The London side hope the deal, worth a reported £100 million, with CB Holding will secure their financial future.

LAKERS DODGE A Orlando’s Lee misses a winning lay-up in regulation time as Los Angeles make the most of their second chance DPA, Los Angeles

T

he Los Angeles Lakers are halfway home in their run for the NBA Championship ring after dodging a bullet yesterday. Kobe Bryant scored 29 points, Spanish-native Pau Gasol had seven of his 24 in the overtime along with 10 rebounds and the Lakers edged the visiting Orlando Magic 10196 to take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals. When the ever so serious and focused Bryant was asked to crack a smile after going up 2-0, he asked, “What’s there to be happy about? The job’s not finished.”

Huldahl wins Wales Open Jeppe Huldahl, ranked 377th in the world, shot a 4-underpar 67 to win the Wales Open by one stroke and claim his first European Tour title on Sunday. The 26-year-old Dane birdied four holes and did not drop a stroke at Celtic Manor. He finished on 275, nine under par. “I am so surprised,” Huldahl said. “I was so nervous on the last three holes, I couldn’t feel my hands. Playing 18 was a very emotional experience.” Meanwhile, Kim In-kyung finished with a flourish on Sunday, sinking birdies on two of her final three holes to capture the State Farm Classic by a stroke over Se Ri Pak. Kim fired a 7-under 65 to finish at 17-under 271. AP

The Lakers head to Orlando for the first of three games tomorrow (Bangkok time), with a shot at putting a stranglehold on the best-of-seven series. No team in NBA play-off history has ever rallied to win after falling behind 0-3. “We’re about to kick it up,” Bryant said. “We’re close. We’re going to be ready to go.” Lamar Odom had 19 points on eight-of-nine shooting, and two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to seal the victory. Asked what he did to calm himself down for the critical free throws, Odom answered, “Actually nothing. Sometimes

BULLET Orlando Magic guard Courtney Lee fumbles a last-second shot that would have won the game against the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Centre.

THIS IS DEFINITELY HEART-BREAKING WHEN YOU FEEL YOU HAD A CHANCE TO WIN. Courtney Lee as an athlete the best thing you can do is not think.”

Rashard Lewis fired in a playoff career-high 34 points with 11 rebounds, Turkish-native Hedo Turkoglu had 22 points, while Dwight Howard accumulated 17 with 16 boards for Orlando, who came up short after Courtney Lee missed a lay-up on the final play of regulation. “This is most definitely heart-breaking when you feel you had a chance to win and you left it slip right out of your hands,” Lewis said. “We most definitely wanted to get this win, take the homecourt advantage going back to Orlando. But the ball didn’t bounce our way. “That last lay-up Courtney

had could have easily gone in and we could have easily not gone into overtime and home tied at 1-1. But it didn’t happen. The Lakers are up 2-0. All we have to do is go home and take care of home just like they took care of home.” In a complete turnaround from the 25-point blowout in Thursday’s opener, the Magic competed hard, resulting in 23 lead chances and 21 ties, but committed 20 costly turnovers. Still, they had a final shot to win after Turkoglu blocked Bryant’s shot from behind, recovered the loose ball and called a quick timeout as the clock apparently expired.

nvincible Federbrau wrote a new chapter in Thai volleyball history yesterday when they stunned defending and three-time champions Tianjin Bridgestone from China to capture the Asian Women’s Club Championship for the first time. Thailand made their debut in the annual tournament in its first year in 1999 under the AeroThai banner and finished second. Since then, they haven’t been able to go one better, coming close in 2002, 2007 and 2008 when they also finished second. The long wait made yesterday’s victory all the sweeter. The Chinese are very strong, but our attack was relentless. We pushed hard and the determined effortworked pretty well.” The Thai team will represent Asia in the World Women’s Club Championship in the United Arab Emirates next January. LANGER CRUISES Bernhard Langer became the first three-time winner on the Champions Tour this season, closing with a 5-under 67 for a six-stroke victory over Mark O’Meara in the Triton Financial Classic.

Tiger Woods broke away from a four-way tie for the lead on Sunday at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, with birdies on his final two holes, the last one a 7-iron that stopped a foot away from the cup for a 7-under 65 and a one-shot victory over Jim Furyk. With a high-charged rally from a four-shot deficit, Woods revved up the crowd and silenced those who questioned his game heading into his title defence at Bethpage Black in two weeks. He didn’t miss a fairway in the final round, the first time he has done that in more than five years. He missed only five fairways all week, his most accurate tournament off the tee since the 1998 Masters. Woods won the Memorial for a record fourth time, and tournament host Jack Nicklaus was there to greet him behind the 18th green. It was his second victory this year after missing eight months from knee surgery, and Woods figured he will only get better. “I knew it was coming around,” Woods said. “I just wasn’t as consistent as I needed to be.” Furyk made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for a 69 to finish alone in second. “I just didn’t beat one guy,” Furyk said. “It [stinks] finishing second. But he played better. A 7 under on those greens and with the conditions we dealt with, that’s pretty spectacular.” Woods finished at 12-under 276 and won for the 67th time in his career. Woods played with Michael Letzig, who shot 75 but was treated to quite a show. “I’ve never seen anyone hit irons like that,” Letzig said. “I tried not to watch him, but some of those shots were unreal.” AGENCIES

Orlando rookie Courtney Lee missed a potential winning lay-up in the dying seconds, forcing the game into overtime. Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers made the most of their second chance by snatching the win. If Orlando fail to recover in the series, Lee’s miss will go down as one of the biggest gaffes in finals history. >PAGES 27
