e must love our work. We have to be dedicated and work hard, only then can we get wealthy, as I have proved. Someone told me that I am lucky to be successful in anything I do. Actually it’s not luck, it’s the love I have for my job. It is boring for anyone to spend hours in a TV studio day after day for a decade. It seems insane to get up at 5am and head to the film set, then be the last one to leave. But I have done it – and look what I’ve earned in return.

angkok Democrat MPs have backed City Hall’s plan to take over the green-line Skytrain extensions and vowed to push the agenda forwards at the party’s meeting today. After a meeting yesterday with Democrat MPs Kowit Tharana, Chanin Rungsaeng, Jermmas Juenglertsiri, Attawit Suwanpakdee and Orn-anong Klainok, Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paripatra said the group supported the city in its bid to take over the Skytrain’s future Baring-Samut Prakan and Morchit-Saphan Mai extensions rather than leave them in the hands of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority. “If the city takes care of the green line, the benefits to the public will be maximised because the fares will not be too expensive,” said Sukhumbhand.

BOOKED UP If you want to meet Thailand’s first panda cub, she has a window in January By Kwandao Jitpana D A I L Y X P R E S S , Chiang Mai

nyone desperate to get a glimpse of Chiang Mai Zoo’s panda cub will have to wait in line – for the rest of the year. “The 65,000 advanced tickets for this year to see the panda in its snow dome have already been snapped up,” said Pradit Pankaew, an official at Chiang Mai Zoo. “The queues last until January next year.” Visitors sometimes book beforehand to visit the koalas and the aquarium, but never on this scale, Pradit added. Panda fever has also reached Chiang Mai Airport, where posters of the cub are luring tourists to the zoo. People across the country

have been busy thinking up names for the new arrival. Tai Tai, Lin Lin, Ching Ching and Tai Na are popular suggestions, while others prefer Lanna-dialect names such as Uang Phueng, Uang Luang and Uang Doi.

Sneaky healthy check Chinese veterinarians and panda expert Wei Ming managed to separate the cub from mother Lin Hui for a 15-minute health check-up yesterday. After Lin Hui got wise to their trick of offering a bamboo snack to get her to let go of her cub, the staff shifted to bread, which distracted her long enough for them to snatch the tiny panda. Veterinarian Kannikar

Nimtrakul said that the fastgrowing cub’s weight had increased by 105 grams in two days to 500 grams. It is now 22cm-long and getting black fur around its ears and front and back legs. Kannikar confirmed that Lin Hui is producing enough good-quality milk for her offspring. Prasertsak Boontrakulpoonthawee, chief of the zoo’s panda research project, said thousands of names had been submitted to the cub-naming contest ahead of the deadline for suggestions on Friday. They would be narrowed down to four, he said, then the public can vote for their favourite name using specially made postcards, with some of the proceeds going to the Panda Fund. The winning name will be announced on August 12, said Prasertsak.

rueCorp and Apple will hold a meeting today to discuss unconfirmed reports that the unit price of iPhone handsets sold in Thailand will be reduced drastically, a TrueCorp source said yesterday. TrueCorp is the exclusive operator of Apple’s iPhone in Thailand. The iPhone’s price in the US has been cut in half to US$99 (about Bt3,400) ahead of the release of the new model, but it has notbeen revealed whether the cut was initiated by AT&T, the exclusive operator in the US, or by Apple itself.

Announcement soon The result of the talks will be publicly announced in the next few days. The source said sales of the iPhone had not yet been affected by the reports. The source said the new iPhone with 32-gig capacity will be soon available here but could not say exactly when or how much it would cost. The 8-gig and 16-gig models cost Bt23,000 and Bt28,000 respectively. When the 32-gig handsets come onto the market here, owners of the 8- and 16-gig models will be able to update programmes free of charge at True Shops or through websites, the source said. Titipong Khiewpaisal, executive vice president of Advanced Info Service, calls this move a fully-subsidised marketing scheme, which should come with binding contracts for users.

A woman accused of killing her pregnant friend is believed to have cut open the 21-year-old’s abdomen to take her baby and pass it off as her own. The infant also died, but it could not be determined whether he was alive when he was taken from Heather Snively’s womb, the Washington County sheriff’s department said. Korena Roberts, 27, has been charged with murder. A call to the emergency dispatcher brought emergency workers to Roberts’ house in the Portland suburb of Beaverton. Workers found blood on the floor and Roberts’ boyfriend trying to revive the infant. Investigators said Roberts claimed the baby was hers. At the emergency room, doctors, who were unable to revive the baby, determined that Roberts had not given birth. Police returned to Roberts’ home and found the hidden body. AP

Enhancements include voice command, downloading rented videos, and customisation to additional languages including Arabic, Hebrew and Korean. A new “Find My iPhone” feature lets people use an

The new operating system also lets iPhones connect to one another wirelessly for communal activities such as playing games.

An Australian TV host said yesterday that celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay would never again be welcome on her show after he hurled insults and sexual references at her. Ramsay is the volatile star of reality programmes “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares” on Australia’s Nine Network. The network also broadcasts the popular “A Current Affair” show, hosted by journalist Tracy Grimshaw. After an appearance by Ramsay on Grimshaw’s show, the British chef and restaurateur attended a food and wine-tasting event for 3,000 people on Saturday in Melbourne. Ramsay stunned the audience by unleashing a string of insults at Grimshaw in her absence, calling her a lesbian and likening her to a pig. Later he said he was only joking. Grimshaw retaliated, calling Ramsay an “arrogant narcissist” and a “bully”. She continued her attack yesterday in a radio interview during which she said Ramsay would not be invited back on her show.

over your ears. The sounds of teens screaming will be deafening as the South Korean boy band TVXQ – better known as across Asia as Dong Bang Shin Ki – returns to Thailand later this month. They’ll be performing two shows at Impact Arena on June 27 and 28 as part of their third Asian tour. With three recent concerts in South Korea that sold out in a few minutes, tickets here are reported to be selling fast. “Dong Bang Shin Ki’s upcoming concert will be on the

same large scale as in South Korea,” says Anuwat Wichiennarat, managing director of organiser 4 Nologue Media. The budget for the shows is Bt70 million, with more than Bt20 million going for the stage production and just under Bt10 million on the six-metre-high, 54-metre-wide gigantic monitor. About 100 Koreans, including the five lads in the band, are coming to Bangkok, along with three 40-metre containers containing the stage sets, production equipment, the lighting and sound system. “We expect to have fans from

all over Asia coming to Thailand because the concerts here will be the same as in South Korea and free of the constraints faced in China,” says Anuwat.

Big enough for bicycles “The stage will be designed like a cross with additional smaller stages and plenty of special effects. The band will also take a bicycle ride around the hall.” Dong Bang Shin Ki will probably be supported by Kim Kibum, or Key, one of the members of SM Entertainment’s rising boy

band, SHINee, who wowed Thai fans earlier this year. Dong Bang Shin Ki are promoting their new studio album, “Mirotic”, which has topped the charts in many Asian countries, including Thailand. It won the Album of the Year prize at 2008 MKMF Korean Music Festival Awards. Four of the members contributed towards the new outing. Xiah Junsu wrote the track, “Picture of You”, Max Changmin penned “Love in the Ice”, Hero Jaejoong wrote “Don’t Cry My Lover” and Micky Yoochun penned “Love Bye Love”.

Yui “And I was fortunate to find him at the right moment, just when he wanted to stop being a bad boy.” The two were interviewed separately on May 15, a day after their surprise, headlinemaking marriage registration. Infamously bad-tempered Tao confirms his intentions. “I want to stop being a moron,” he says. “And I’d like to tell all women, don’t come and mess with me because I have a wife.” The two had dated for three months and became lovers for 14 days before taking the plunge. At first Yui said there was no need to get married but the actor insisted. “People get married not because they want to live together but because they want to have kids,” he says. As for speculation that the rush to marriage is because Yui is pregnant, well she’s not – yet. Tao’s hoping to start a family next year. Tao says he decided it was time to settle down after a boy greeted him, saying “You’re such a bad-boy idol to me.” The kid’s remark stunned him – he couldn’t bear to think that he was responsible for a generation of ill-mannered Thai men. Maybe his wife Yui would love to thank that boy personally.

In shops now is the original soundtrack of the 2005/2006 Taiwanese drama, “KO One”, which was broadcast on Channel 7 and starred Aaron Yan, Wu Chun, Calvin Chen and Jiro Wang of Taiwanese boy band Fahrenheit. It was the best selling soundtrack in 2006, selling more than 60,000 copies in Taiwan within the first month. The boy band sings two tracks, “Yi Ge Ren Liu Lang” (“Wandering Alone”) and “Ru Zi Ke Jiao” (“Teachable Child”), with labelmates Tank taking over for “Give Me Your Love”. The album comes with a VCD featuring behind the scenes footage of the “Give Me Your Love” MV as well as shots taken before the press conference with the boy band.

hristina “Tina” Aguilar and Mai Charoenpura wowed the crowds at a sold-out Impact Arena Saturday night with sexy get-ups and fast moving numbers. For many fans, though, the ladies were at their best when they slowed the pace to sing soothing love songs. Mai, known as the “queen of pop rock”, and Tina, the “queen of dance”, entertained throughout “Beauty on the Beat”, with wellchoreographed erotic dance moves and energetic dancing. Green laser beams flashed around the hall as Tina and Mai appeared on stage in black and white futuristic costumes for the opening track, “Burn”, then took turns to perform their rousing hits. Screaming fans, mostly female and katoey, greeted each of the girls. Mai drew laughter when she commented wryly, “If a bomb were to explode here tonight, half the katoey in the country would be wiped out.” Hip-hoppers Buddha Bless were the first guests to appear, jamming with Tina before performing their hits “Boom” and “Fire”. That gave the girls time to change and Tina drew screams and applause as she sashayed on stage in a black Madonna-style boob cone, followed by Mai clad in a corset and black stockings. The au-

dience was treated to a hilarious performance of Mai’s “Klub Duek”, as the rock star pulled down a male dancer’s tracksuit bottoms. Mai went on to sing a medley of ballads before joining Chin Chinawut on “Khuen Thi Nueng”. Then she and Tina segued into another set, which included a ballroom arrangement of Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop The Music”. Nichkhun, the Thai member of Korean boy band 2PM, showed his talent for piano on the Korean song “Nothing Better”, and had the crowd on their feet with his pub dance medley. “The Star” Singto showcased his baritone with Mai and Tina on a range of covers before the ladies closed out the show with “Sud Rit Sud Dej” and “Lerk Her”. AUTOMOTIVE

Absolutely purr-fect The new BMW 320d gets an midlife update that irons out its earlier rumbles By Vijo Varghese D A I LY X P R E S S

T

welve months ago, I prod on the accelerator pedal and the engine gives its typical diesel rumble. The 3-series leaps forward riding on its wave of torque. I think to myself that this, the BMW 320d, is the most perfect premium vehicle on the Thai market. It’s got a 0-100kph acceleration time of 8.0 seconds, it’ll give you 15km/litre and it handles fabulously in the corners with almost no body roll. It did, however, have its own shortcomings.

Today I prod on the accelerator pedal and the engine gives its typical diesel rumble. Now I’m driving the mid-life update of the 3-series, and it’s just got a whole lot better. All the things I complained about are gone. The suspension has been softened, to an extent that life for the rear seat passenger is now in fact quite comfortable. Bumps and cracks on the roads are ironed out

although they can still be felt. In the process however, BMW has managed to retain the superb driving characteristics of the 3-series. Although the full extent of the changes are only obvious when the new and old versions are put side by side, the new 3 is an overall prettier vehicle. There are two new lines on the bonnet that start from the BMW logo upfront and further accentuate it. The headlights come with LED’s on the side and a design that looks like it’s a component from ‘Transformers’. Possibly one of the features that made the previous 3-series not driver-friendly were the side view mirrors. They looked sporty but made it difficult for everyday use. The new version has side-mirrors almost double the size. The rear-lights also have a new design now with indicator lights coming with LEDs in little boxes giving a 3D effect. The rear bumper also has been slightly modified. Changes are negligible on the inside except for the new iDrive system. The new iDrive is worlds better than the previous generation version and comes with direct-access buttons to commonly used features like CD, Radio, Telephone and others. For those who are keen on music, the 3 now has a USB plug in. If coupled with special wiring you can access the music on your iPod or iPhone directly with the

iDrive. There is also a whole set of new alloy wheels depending on which model you pick in the range. The 3 series is currently available in three forms, the 320d, 320i

and 318i. While the 320 diesel costs Bt 2.899 million, it’s probably the best of the lot in terms of value for money. The 320i and 318i cost Bt 2.649 and Bt 2.399 million respectively.

Virender Sehwag

India take the field in their last World Twenty20 league game against Ireland today reeling from the news that Virender Sehwag will return home due to injury. Vietnamese riot at Denilson’s absence

Thailand’s Sattaya Supupramai fired a blistering nine-under-par 63 to take the first round lead in the Heritage Melaka Classic yesterday, setting a new course record at the Tiara Melaka Golf & Country Club. The 25-year-old produced an almost blemishfree round posting 10 birdies against one bogey in the Mercedes-Benz Tour event. Compatriot Pongthep Jaewchamnanchao carded a 66 for second place with a sole bogey on the par-five 16th.. – AFP

Denilson, once the world’s most expensive footballer, has yet to kick a ball in anger for his new Vietnamese club amid reports that he’s injured. The former Brazil international failed to take to the pitch at the weekend, sparking anger among the Hai Phong Cement Football Club faithful, who burned seats and threw objects onto the pitch in Denilson protest. “My doctor said that I can play football within one month,” the player said. There were no details of his injury. – AFP

Pienaar hints at Everton exit Steven Pienaar has challenged Everton to prove they are serious about keeping him by coming up with a new long-term deal to ward off interest from Atletico Madrid. I am a proud Everton player at present and would welcome it if the club moved to secure my long-term future, but that kind of thing is out of my hands.” Pienaar added: “I have played in a number of the best leagues in the world, and it has always been my ambition to test myself in La Liga. For a player of my type, La Liga will always be an attraction and to play in the Champions League again would be a real thrill.” – AFP

F

abio Capello has underlined his faith in Theo Walcott by signalling that the Arsenal winger will start today’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra despite an anonymous display in Kazakhstan at the weekend. Walcott was hauled off at half-time in England’s 4-0 win in Almaty and his starting place had been thought to be on the line for the clash with the group six minnows. But Capello believes Walcott’s pace could be the key that unlocks an Andorran side that will come to Wembley looking to get every man behind the ball and frustrate their hosts. “Walcott will be very important because we have to play to attack and the wide position is very important,” Capello said.

Theo Walcott will get his chance in tonight’s World Cup qualifier. “I’ve spoken to him and he trained very well. He needs to play to recover his best condition.” Capello has warned his players that they may have to be patient. “I saw their game against Belarus and they put 10 players just in front of the box, waiting, waiting, waiting,” the Italian added. “It’s not easy. But if we score

early it will be an easy game. “We have to attack. Andorra will be waiting for us in front of their box with 10 players defending.” Capello confirmed he is considering resting Glen Johnson, who would miss the September clash with Croatia if he picks up another booking. Manchester United veteran Gary Neville is expected to deputise.

VILLA SET TO JOIN KAKA Spanish press say striker is on his way to Madrid AFP, Madrid

V

alencia striker David Villa, one of the stars of Spain’s victorious Euro 2008 squad, is close to signing for Real Madrid, a Spanish newspaper said yesterday. He would become the second big name to join the club under new president Florentino Perez, after Brazil’s 2007 world footballer of the year Kaka completed his transfer from Italian giants AC Milan on Monday. Perez has established a ¤200 million war chest for players, vowing to create a “spectacular team” capable of overtaking arch-rivals Barcelona next season. The sports daily Marca said Real are set to pay ¤37-38 million for Villa plus bonuses linked to future results. The top scorer at Euro 2008, Villa, 27, scored 28 goals in the Spanish championship this season. But Valencia is reportedly ready to sell some of its top stars in a bid to ease its financial difficulties.

Deal worth 100 million Real Madrid’s capture of Brazilian star Kaka could be worth US$100 million a season in additional revenues to the Spanish club, according to sports business experts Weber Shandwick Sport. According to the consultancy, the Brazilian playmaker’s international profile will trigger a surge in shirt sales, sponsorship revenue, match ticket sales and boost Real’s global fan base, in a

,,

David Villa may have to leave Valcenia, who are in deep financial trouble. manner reminiscent of David Beckham’s impact during his 2003-07 spell in the Spanish capital. The former AC Milan star will also increase Real’s capacity to generate income from overseas tours. Professor Simon Chadwick, who came up with the figures, believes signing Cristiano Ronaldo would add a further US$75 million per season to Real’s turnover. Real claim that Beckham earned the club US$600 million in sales of shirts and other merchandise alone before his departure for LA Galaxy. Chadwick said: “Kaka and Ronaldo can be viewed in the same bracket as Beckham when

it comes to global commercial impact, if their image is controlled right and Real Madrid improve their results in the Uefa Champions League as a result of their arrival. “Becks sold a million shirts in his first six months when he was just one of several ‘galacticos’ at Real, alongside the likes of Zidane, Raul and the Brazilian Ronaldo. “Even if Real signed one or two of the other stars being mentioned, there would be a real focus on Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo’s talents on the pitch, but also their brand off it. That will pay for their transfers several times over, even with a bumper salary package.

Real fans go gaga over Kaka The fans of Real Madrid are optimistic about the signing of Brazilian megastar Kaka, according to an online poll taken by sports daily Marca. The signing of Kaka from AC Milan was announced by both clubs early on Tuesday. By noon on Tuesday, no less than 37,784 votes had been registered in Marca’s poll, which asked its readers “Do you think that Kaka will triumph at Real Madrid?” Seventy-six per cent of readers answered “yes”, with 24 per cent opting for “no.” In Italy, the news raised fears about a decline of AC Milan, who are owned by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Real were set to start a massive merchandising campaign with Kaka replica shirts and other items today, in an attempt to make the deal pay off commercially. The signing of Kaka was front-page news in Spanish newspapers, with most papers pleased that new Real president Florentino Perez has raised the prestige of the Spanish Liga by taking such an attractive player from Italy. In Italy, two thirds of the readers polled by La Gazzetta dello Sport on its website believe that losing Kaka will seriously weaken Milan. Other reports suggested that Berlusconi could be hurt as well. Comedian Teo Teocoli, a die-hard Milan fan, told the la Repubblica daily that he could quit going to the stadium: “Kaka was the one who gave me the joy of following Milan. Now there is no Kaka, so it’s enough.” D PA

Coach blasts ‘ridiculous’Bangladesh after inspired Ireland’s knockout blow Bangladesh coach Jamie

Siddons lashed out at his team after their first round exit from the World Twenty20, saying they were not willing to learn. “It was ridiculous batting,” Australian Siddons said after Bangladesh were restricted to a modest 137-8 by minnows Ireland, who won by six wickets to book their place in the Super Eights. Burly seamer Trent

Johnson grabbed 3-20 before the O’Brien brothers, Niall and Kevin, guided Ireland home with 10 deliveries to spare at Trent Bridge. Niall made 40 off 25 balls, while Kevin completed the easy win with an unbeaten 39 off 17 balls that included four boundaries and two sixes. “Batting has to be aggressive in Twenty20 cricket. But there were too many mental errors. We had a backup plan

For the growing number of cricket fans in the Irish Republic it was confirmation of the form their side had demonstrated at the World Cup in the Caribbean two years ago.

With its international successes, cricket in Ireland is getting a profile that it has not had for more than a century. And the Irish Times said “there could be no argument that Ireland had again deserved their victory on the big stage”. “Inspired Ireland reach Super Eights” headlined the newspaper. “O’Brien brothers bash Bangladesh” said the Irish Independent.

Talented Symonds tired of cricket but not its old drinking culture

T

AFP, Sydney

or many Australians, cricket’s enfant terrible Andrew Symonds had to go. The prodigiously-talented allrounder was given countless chances, yet blew them all, leaving officials and team-mates with no option but to cut him adrift. Symonds has been likened to a fish out of water. He simply could not countenance fitting into a politically-correct team environment and the rules he had to obey. He turned to the booze to help escape his disillusionment with cricket and the rest, as they say, is history. But what about Cricket Australia’s role in the whole, sorry mess? There is widespread opinion in Australia that feckless officials let Symonds get away with far too much for far too long. The origins go back four years ago when Symonds turned up drunk on the morning of Australia’s one-day international with Bangladesh in Cardiff. He was immediately stood down and Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland told him that he would have his contract torn up if there was a repeat of his behaviour. As one well-connected cricket writer succinctly put it: “Yet he did – at least four times – and until now his contract remained intact.”

,,

The Australian all-rounder has been banished from the national team for his latest drink-related incident.

Symonds continued to embarrass his skipper Ricky Ponting, team-mates and CA officials with his backsliding over the ensuing years. And each time CA and the selectors found a way to bring him back into the fold, albeit not for this year’s Ashes Test series in England. CA ordered him to undergo counselling and even sessions on the psychologist’s couch to “rehabilitate” the dysfunctional cricketer. Yet after all the counselling and belief that Symonds was better for it, he again selfdestructed in the days before the World Twenty20 tournament in England this month and was ordered home. There were reports out of his

hometown of Brisbane that last summer Symonds’ was in no mental shape for a recall to

international cricket. He and his family reportedly lost money in personal investments and he had fallen out of love with cricket, yet selectors still included him in their team for the world Twenty20. It came no big surprise to those who knew him that it would once again ended in tears. Former Queensland teammate and Test wicketkeeper Ian Healy senses that Symonds just wants out. “He might just be sick [of it]. He’s just cooked and tired of cricket and sort of wants to be dropped,” Healy said. Many fans have been quick to label CA hypocritical, given that the organisation has a brewer as its major sponsor.

he English press reacted with glee yesterday to news that Ricky Ponting’s Australia team was knocked out of the World Twenty20, ahead of next month’s Ashes series between the two countries. “Even Ireland make the Super 8s but Ricky’s boys crash out as Wallabies,” said the Sun tabloid, reflecting a surprising day for the tournament that saw mighty Australia dumped but Ireland stay in after beating Bangladesh. “What do you call an Aussie at the Twenty20? A spectator,” joked the Daily Mirror, after what was Australia’s fifth successive Twenty20 defeat. One commentator wrote: “Since they touched down in England 12 days ago, Australia’s tour has gone exactly according to plan... England’s plan.” Australia, the reigning Test and World Cup champions, were sent packing from the World Twenty20 after suffering a six-wicket defeat by Sri Lanka in a crucial group C game at Trent Bridge on Monday. They now turn their attention to retaining the Ashes urn in the five-Test series against England starting next month. “The Aussies now have two weeks to fill before the Ashes tour begins. So throw another shrimp on the barbie, Ricky!” the Sun mocked. The Daily Express also remarked on how the Australians would spend their time, suggesting a theme park or even the London Eye, saying there was only so much “net practice and thumb-twiddling” a team can do.

the year Kaka completed his transfer from Serie A side AC Milan to Real Madrid late on Monday, both clubs announced. The 27-year-old signed a six year contract with the Spanish giants for a reported fee of ¤65-million which both clubs refused to confirm. If it is ¤65-million it would be the second biggest ever transfer – after that of French great Zinedine Zidane, who cost Real Madrid ¤75million in 2001. “I wanted to stay [at Milan] but the world crisis affected my decision. I knew I’d only leave Milan to play for Real,” the player said. “I will be part of a new Real Madrid that will once again be champions in Europe and in Spain,” “It will be a new challenge for me and to live up to all the expectations placed on me will be motivation enough. “I want to help write a new page in the history of the club by winning trophies with them.” Kaka had earlier undergone in Brazil a problem-free medical attended by Real Madrid’s Dr Juan Carlos Hernandez as well as the Brazilian squad’s doctor, Jose Luiz Ronco. Real chairman Florentino Perez has established a ¤200 million war chest for players, vowing to create a “spectacular team” capable of overtaking arch-rivals Barcelona – who won the title, Champions League and Spanish Cup in coach Pep Guardiola’s first season in charge – next season. Kaka’s official unveiling in Madrid is unlikely to take place until the end of the month because after tomorrow’s World Cup qualifier against Paraguay in Recife he will travel with the squad to South Africa for the Confederations Cip which starts next Sunday.
