GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!

Lost in translation

What’s on

By Paul Jackson DJ Wave FM 88, ‘Drivetime’ weekdays

s an expat living in Thailand I often see what I call “lost in translation” notices that are great to use on my radio show. Here are a few examples. On a photo/film-processing shop window: “1 hour photos ready in 20 minutes”. In the window of a shop in Siam Square: “Open 7 days a week, except Mondays”. At the end of my soi there was a beauty salon that closed down. Maybe they should have changed the sign in the window. It listed “Nail Pain” as one of their services (what did they do, use a hammer?!). Finally, while phoning a posh hospital in Bangkok recently, I was put on hold for a doctor. The music that came floating down the line was “Stairway to Heaven”. Very reassuring!

grilled-chicken vendor says she was assaulted by debt collectors who used a Taser gun and death threats yesterday after mistaking her for her sister. The victim, Wanpen Klingsukhon, 38, told Daily Xpress that she complained to police after she almost lost consciousness when a woman and three men attacked her with the electroshock gun. But police officers refused to get involved, and told her to ask for Bt500 compensation from the gang, she said. Her elder sister had borrowed Bt3,000, Wanpen added. But the gang refused her sister’s offer to pay all the money back at once as it wanted to keep collecting the interest of Bt150 per day. Wanpen is demanding the authorities and provincial governor look into the case.

Police ‘commission’ Chaiyaphum has plenty of debt collectors, known as “safety helmet people” because they ride motorcycles and offer their clients the choice of paying interest or facing assault. Chaiyaphum police chief Maj-General Decha Chuayboonchoom yesterday said he had ordered his men to be vigilant for debt collectors demanding high rates of interest. DAILY

Some 560,000 people submitted 54,000 suggestions to the judges of the naming competition, who narrowed them down to 300 names then 10, before the four finalists were chosen, he said.

The people who suggested the final four names were entered into a prize draw, with four of them winning Bt100,000 each. The public will be able to vote on the names using one of the 30 million specially made postcards that will go on sale at Bt5 each from Friday to August 5. Panda veterinarian Kannikar Nimtrakul said that the panda cub was healthy, had grown to 26 centimetres in length and currently weighed 810 grams,

an increase of 180 grams in two days.

Preparing for a debut Staff yesterday began to coax it away from Lin Hui, its mother, for longer periods in preparation for the cub’s debut in front of zoo visitors. Experts from China have commented that the cub can now survive without its mother, said Kannikar, but zoo authorities are keeping them together for the well-being of Lin Hui. Kannikar said visitors would be asked to walk through trays of disinfectant to get to the panda clinic area when the cub goes on display from July 4-6. They will also be asked to avoid contact with cats or dogs before their panda visit as the cub is susceptible to disease.

They painted beautiful designs on shipping containers to be sunk off the coast of Khanom district. “The containers will become an artificial reef, serving as shelters or nursing grounds for sea creatures,” said Chankij Jearaphunt, managing director of Khanom Power Plant, a subsidiary of EGCO Group. EGCO organised the “Build Undersea Homes” project – which has placed 18 containers on the seabed this year – in conjunction with the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Nakhon Si Thammarat Office and other organisations.

A tanker truck hauling 30,280 litres of ethanol crashed and exploded into an inferno that sent a river of fire into storm drains, killed the driver and blocked major highways in Long Beach, California. The heat from the blazing ethanol, or ethyl alcohol, was so intense it melted guardrails, and all that remained of the truck were its axles and small portions of the cab. The truck hit the side rail of eastbound State Route 91 at the transition to Interstate 710 and a huge fireball enveloped the I-710 overpasses. Officials worried the fire may have weakened the elevated stretch of road, the fire department said. A stream of burning alcohol flowed from the tanker into a storm drain, shooting plumes of flame six metres into the air from other storm drains. Firefighters snuffed the flames with foam.

A Frenchman who underwent the world’s first face and hands transplant in April after being disfigured in an accident has died, hospital officials said yesterday. The man, in his thirties, died of cardiac arrest while undergoing a follow-up operation on June 8, according to Laurent Lantieri, the surgeon who performed the groundbreaking transplant near Paris. “He developed a facial infection a few weeks after his operation, and during an operation to try to tackle the infection he suffered cardiac arrest,” Lantieri told RTL radio. Lantieri said the patient’s death was linked to a heart problem, not to the transplant itself. “Developing an infection is a common phenomenon among transplant patients,” he said. “All the biopsies we performed showed there was absolutely no rejection.” Surgeons had replaced the patient’s entire face above the lips, including the scalp, nose, ears and forehead, in a 30-hour operation involving a medical team of more than 40. The recipient, on a donor waiting list for more than a year, had scars from burns on his face and hands so severe that it had robbed him of all social life. – A F P

He said he was “definitely disappointed” with the court ruling. The court in Malawi listed Mercy’s father as “unknown” and said that she was born to a 14-year-old mother who died three days after giving birth. Kambewa, 24, said that he believed the infant had died with the mother in 2006, until he saw newspaper reports that Madonna was seeking to adopt her. “I was misinformed that my

girlfriend Mwandida and her daughter died in 2006,” Kambewa said. He added that he has never seen the child, except in newspaper photos. Madonna first met Mercy at Kondanani orphanage during her first visit to the poor southern African nation in 2006. She has already adopted another Malawian child, David Banda, and has said that she wanted him to have a sibling from his home country.

A teenager faces charges in a gruesome string of cat mutilations and killings that have horrified his neighbours and shaken animal lovers in two South Florida communities. Tyler Hayes Weinman, 18, was charged with 19 counts each of animal cruelty and improperly disposing of an animal body and four counts of burglary. In the past month, residents in the Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay neighbourhoods have reported finding the bodies of more than two dozen cats. Weinman was taken into custody and was being questioned. Four of the confirmed cat killings were reported on the street where Weinman lived. His attorney said that Weinman is innocent of the charges. – AP

fter more than two years of living in England, iconic rocker Sek Loso is back with a fourth solo album and his concert this Saturday is his first arena gig as a solo artist. Like many old-school rockers, the 35-year-old Sek admits he was worried and confused about digital downloads. “I guess I’m old fashioned,” he says ruefully. “I was afraid that without the CD, my music career would come to an end. “With the download system, I didn’t know how I could collect the money from sales or how to protect my copyright. I found myself wavering as to whether to continue as a musician. In the end, I went to a temple to look for guidance. I also read several dharma books by Phra Budhadasa Bhiku. A night at the Casbah Harem pants are all the rage but you need the right accessories – and the figure – to do them justice By Melissa Magsaysay LOS ANGELES TIMES

With properties like oleic acid that moisturises and protects the skin, it’s little wonder that the oil from the tropical moringa tree was used 4,000 years ago by Greeks and Egyptians to make lotion and perfume. Now Body Shop has done its own research on this plant and is extracting the oil from its seeds and crushing the petals for its new Moringa collection. Moisturise and protect your delicate skin with the fragrant shower gel, milk body, body butter and body scrub.

hen harem pants came down the runways at Chloe and Alexander McQueen for spring 2009, they somehow glided past the cartoony pop culture associations and helped define summer’s effortlessly slouchy look. But the style is hardly effortless to pull off. In fact, next to hot pants and high-waisted trousers, harem pants might be the most daunting item of clothing to wear. They tend to make the hips, rear and thighs look larger while making legs seem shorter. But you can make these pants look chic and flattering – it’s all a matter of balancing proportions and adding the right accessories so the statement is bold. These pants fall and drape in the right places on a model, but if you're heavy in the hips and thighs or have short legs and a long torso, you’ll want to wear really high heels to get a similar effect. Sky-high stilettos will eliminate the frump factor and add a seriously sexy line to the portion of leg not enveloped in the pants. To keep the overall silhouette clean and balanced, wear something tight and minimal on top - body skimming tanks are best for summer tucked

in or belted so that the waist shows. The most easily wearable pants I found were a black and white printed silk style from 3.1 Phillip Lim but American Apparel, Alexis Lamontagna and Ella Moss are using comfy cotton jersey for their version of the look. Their harem pants are casual and can be worn with something more sporty, such as a racer-back tank or fitted V-neck T-shirt. Great heels will dress them up and flatter the body, but if you're comfortable with the silhouette, flats or flip-flops will work too. All these pants have a huge cool factor because the look is so unexpected. And trust me -when it works, it has an attitude and slouch that simply says “sexy tomboy”. Don’t be afraid to try it.

Johnson returning to Chelsea? Chelsea are leading Liverpool and Manchester City in the chase for Portsmouth defender Glen Johnson, who may bring in about £18 million, the Sun reported. Johnson played only 35 games in four years at Chelsea before the club sold him to Pompey for £4 million in 2007. Portsmouth officials expect a transfer to be completed this week, the Sun said.

The newspaper also said that striker Peter Crouch is concerned about the ownership situation at Pompey.

Tevez out of Old Trafford Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez told Ferguson that he’s ready to move on, the Independent reports. Ferguson has called the Argentine several times from his holiday on the Cote d’Azur and Tevez has told the coach Tevez he’s intent on leaving, the newspaper said. Tevez will probably move to Manchester City, who may offer £140,000 a week, the Independent said.

Man United want Villa Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson will have about £100 million to spend after selling Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, and hopes to spend about £45 million on Valencia striker David Villa. Ferguson will try to sign Villa, who is also a Real target, as well as Wigan winger Antonio Valencia.

Ratthapark ‘Feem’ Wilairot fell back with engine trouble in 250cc race.

HEAT ON FEEM Thai takes seventh in Spain after mechanical glitch DAILY XPRESS

T

hai Honda PTT SAG rider Ratthapark “Feem” Wilairot is confident about his chances of finishing in the top five after he managed a seventh-place in the 250cc at the Catalunya Grand Prix despite encountering engine problems. The Thai’s third campaign in the world championships has been far from consistent – his third top-ten finish of the season came after a disappointing 14th place in Italy a fortnight ago. Concerns abound that the

21-year-old, currently in 12th position in the overall standings with 31 points from six races, might fail in his bid to break into the top five. However, Ratthapark remains positive about his chances and hopes to use the latest result as a springboard to relaunch his campaign, which so far has been blighted with all sorts of problems. The Thai rider started from the third row in tenth position and struggled with a lack of engine power throughout the race. Nursing his machine all the way, he managed to finish the race for some well-deserved points. Excessively high engine tem-

peratures meant he was losing acceleration at the corners, which prevented him from fighting with the front group. But despite riding alone behind the big boys up front he managed to score his second best career position after a fifth in France last month. “I didn’t start well and I lost a few places, but I didn’t lose confidence,” said Ratthapark. “I fought all the way and went forward. Then I started having engine problems because the temperature rose to 75 degrees, and I lost a bit of power. “Despite everything I finished in seventh place, and I’m happy because the team did a great job.”

Tamarine breezes into round 2 Reigning champion Tamarine Tanasugarn opened her title defence in style with a 6-1 6-3 win over Czech Barbora Strycova in the first round of the US$220,000 Ordina Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch yesterday. With tape strapping on her right arm, the Thai veteran showed no sign of pain from a muscle injury as she beat Strycova with ease for the second time after a 6-0 6-2 victory in the 2005 Australian Open. “It was the same injury I had last year. It was bothering me last week in Birmingham but I still can play. It’s okay ... I am checking it everyday,’’ said Tamarine. She next plays Czech seventh seed Iveta Benesova, a left-hander, in the second round. Benesova, who defeated Mara Tamarine Tanasugarn routed Santangelo of Italy 6-2 6-3 on Sunday, leads Tammy 2-0 in their previher Czech rival 6-1 6-3. ous match-ups.

rian Gay played his way into the US Open in his last possible chance, beating David Toms and Bryce Molder by five strokes to complete a wire-towire victory at the St Jude Classic on Sunday. Gay earned his second win in his last five events and third of his career to grab the Open exemption at Bethpage Black as a multiple winner in the last calendar year. He grabbed the $1,008,000 winner’s cheque at TPC Southwind in runaway style, too. Gay led by only a stroke after each of the first three rounds, then shot a third straight 4-under 66 to pull away. He birdied three of the first six holes to take all the suspense out of the final round, and birdied the 18th to finish at 18-under 262. Phil Mickelson, in his first event since announcing wife Amy has breast cancer, and John Daly, returning from a sixmonth PGA Tour suspension, tied for 59th at 1 over. Mickelson closed with a 75, and Daly shot a 70. Toms finished with a 65, and Molder had a 70. John Senden (64), Paul Goydos (68) and Robert Allenby (69) tied for fourth at 12 under. “It was a pretty good golf tournament except for one guy stealing the show,” said Toms, the tournament winner in 2003 and 2004. It wasn’t as large a victory as April when Gay won by 10 at Hilton Head. It just felt like that

Officials had moved up the start by four hours hoping to beat incoming storms that popped up in the morning to delay the start of the final round – by four hours. It didn’t rain again. And Gay put away the win with his putter. He needed only 100 putts to become only the fourth wire-towire winner in the tournament’s 52-year history and the first since Justin Leonard in 2005.

completed a long day and a memorable week in splendid fashion, shooting a 4-under par 68 on Sunday to become the second straight rookie to win the LPGA Championship in Havre De Grace, Maryland. Nordqvist finished at 15-under 273, four shots ahead of Lindsey Wright in the tournament’s final stand at Bulle Rock Golf Course. The LPGA Championship will get a new sponsor in 2010. After letting a fiveshot lead dwindle to one, Nordqvist sank a 12foot birdie putt on No 14 and essentially clinched her first career victory with a 35-foot putt for a birdie on No 15.

CRICKET

India dumped by resurgent England India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni refused to blame a packed playing schedule for the defending champions World Twenty20 exit at the hands of England. Defeat by three runs at Lord’s on Sunday meant India, who won the inaugural 2007 World Twenty20 in South Africa, no longer had any chance of reaching the semi-finals ahead of their final Super Eights match against South Africa at Trent Bridge today. Leading Indian players such as wicketkeeper/batsman Dhoni have been on a virtual nonstop carousel of cricket for the past two years, their international commitments and the Indian Premier League leaving them with little time for a break. But Dhoni said: “If a cricketer says he didn’t perform well because he was tired, it’s a bad excuse. The more cricket you play the better it is. We can’t say we didn’t do well because we are playing too much cricket, we just didn’t play well.” India held England to 153 for seven but could only manage 150 for five as they struggled against shortpitched bowling from England’s pace attack at a packed Lord’s. Big-hitting Yuvraj Singh, who famously smashed six sixes in an over off Stuart Broad at the 2007 tournament, only appeared at the fall of the fourth wicket despite the sluggish progress made by the top order.

Bryant stars but Lakers’ supporting cast helped spell doom for the Magic As great as Kobe Bryant is, one player wasn’t going to beat the Orlando Magic. LeBron James learned that lesson. Bryant didn’t have to. He had plenty of help in the NBA finals, with four team-mates scoring in double figures in the 99-86 Game 5 victory Sunday that gave the Lakers a 15th championship. Bryant scored 30 points and was the finals MVP, but

he wouldn’t be lofting any trophies without the help he got from a solid but unspectacular group that turned out to be the perfect support for him. “I think as team-mates we understand what kind of player he is, what he brings to the table, and we try to complement each other,” Pau Gasol said. “I think what we’ve been doing well this year is understanding what our roles were, what our abil-

obe Bryant’s seven-year chase of a coveted NBA championship ended on Sunday when the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Orlando Magic 99-86 to take an unassailable lead after Game 5 of the best of seven finals series. Bryant now has his fourth NBA title, and Jackson his record 10th. One year after conceding the finals to Boston, Bryant and the Lakers have redemption, and all the rewards that go with it. The star shooting guard scored 30 points and Pau Gasol added 14 and 15 rebounds as the Lakers earned their 15th title. With his fourth championship, Bryant finally stepped out of former team-mate Shaquille O’Neal’s enormous shadow and secured a strong case to be considered the league’s best player since Michael Jordan. Bryant, who averaged 32.4 points and was named finals MVP, said the can-he-win-without-Shaq talk annoyed him. “It was like Chinese water torture,” he said. “I would cringe every time. I was just like, it’s a challenge I’m just going to have to accept because there’s no way I’m going to argue it. You can say it until you’re blue in the face and rationalise it until you’re blue in the face, but it’s not going anywhere until you do something about it. “I think we as a team answered the call because they understood the challenge that I had, and we all embraced it.”

NBA commissioner David Stern hands the Larry O’Brien trophy to Lakers man Joey Buss. O’Neal, now with the Phoenix Suns, was glad to see Bryant win another title. “Congratulations kobe, u deserve it,” O’Neal said on his Twitter page. “You played great. Enjoy it my man enjoy it.” Jackson, who won six league titles in the 1990s with Jordan in Chicago, now has won four with Los Angeles and broke a tie with legendary Boston coach Red Auerbach as the most successful coach in finals history. “I’ll smoke the cigar tonight in memory of Red,” Jackson said in reference to the late Auerbach’s traditional victory celebration. “He was a great guy.” Bryant and Jackson, whose relationship strained and

briefly snapped under the weight of success, are again at the top of their games.

Jackson, who once called Bryant “a selfish player” now sees the 30-year-old in a far different light. “He’s learned how to become a leader in a way in which people want to follow him,” Jackson said. “That’s really important for him to have learned that because he knew that he had to give to get back in return, and so he’s become a giver rather than a demanding leader. That’s been great for him and great to watch.” After the final horn, Bryant leaped into the air and was quickly engulfed by his teammates, who bounced around the floor of Amway Arena. Bryant then gave long hug and shared a few words with Jackson.

The best season in Orlando Magic history came to a close yesterday, with a 99-86 loss to the Lakers in Game 5 of the NBA finals. As team-mates filed to the locker room slowly, Howard didn’t budge. Finally, Jameer Nelson came back to give him some company on the bench, a view that had been great for most of this season. “What I just told Jameer is look at it, just see how they’re celebrating,” Howard said. “And it should motivate us to want to get in the gym, want to get better, just to see those guys celebrating.” The Lakers ran off 16 straight points in a dominant second quarter to go ahead 5646, built a 16-point lead early in the third period and coasted to their 15th championship. The Magic never came close. The sound of happy Lakers fans scattered throughout Amway Arena kept the building from going silent. The smiles on the Magic fans were replaced with frowns, that hopeful feeling swapped for more heartache. “I went over to give him a hug,” Nelson said. “He just wanted me to stay there with him. He’s taking it hard. We all are.” Back in the locker room, long after most of the stragglers and team-mates had cleared, he sat at in his chair dejected. Nelson again came over, gave him a pat on the head and whispered a few words in his ear.

CESC FOR BARCA? Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas says he’ll consider a move to the European champions if he gets a call from Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

TORRES ON FIRE

Liverpool’s Fernando Torres says he

has nothing more to prove after scoring the fastest hat-trick of his career in Spain’s 5-0 rout of New Zealand in the Confederations Cup in Rustenburg, South Africa. The star striker bagged three goals in the opening 17 minutes as Spain extended their unbeaten run to 33 games. Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas and Valencia’s David Villa also got on the scoresheet in a match that looked headed for a double digit result before New Zealand woke up. “I’ve never got a hat-trick so quickly and it was nice to achieve that with the national team,” said Torres, who has now scored 22 goals for Spain. “I owe it to my colleagues. I score but I benefit from the work done behind me. “I don’t think I have anything to prove. Let me tell you I don’t believe any players in this team have anything to prove. We are all playing at a top level.” The Group A victory, Spain’s 13th consecutive win, extended their unbeaten run as they look to overturn Brazil’s world record 35-matches without defeat between 1993 and 1996. Yet despite them being the world’s No 1 ranked team and packed with star names, the Royal Bafokeng Stadium here was half empty, something that will worry Fifa. Spain opened their account after six minutes when Fabregas slotted the ball to Torres on the edge of the box and he coolly curled his shot into the top right hand corner. It was 2-0 eight minutes later after Villa cut the ball back for Torres who side-footed it past flailing goalkeeper Glen Moss. The Liverpool striker collected his hat-trick on 17 minutes when Villarreal’s Joan Capdevila crossed from the left and he outjumped the defence to powerfully head home. AGENCIES
