ighteen years in Thailand has convinced me that PM Abhisit Vejjajiva is the brightest hope we have seen in a generation. It is time for the old guard to accept that a new, intelligent and aspirational generation of Thais is not just coming … it’s already here. This bright, educated, worldly-wise, forward-looking, Web-savvy and professional generation of Thais, reared in a globalised world, realises that Thailand is not the “island” it once was. Our young prime minister is and should be the standard bearer for the new generation.

North Bangkok District Court yesterday sentenced 13 road racers to one month in jail. The 13 young men were rounded up by police early on Sunday for racing their motorcycles on the inbound Vibhavadi-Rangsit road from the Lat Phrao to the Suthisarn intersection. Public prosecutors told the court that the 13 were among 100 motorcyclists racing, but the rest fled the scene. The 13 defendants waived their right to a lawyer after confessing. housands of passengers were left stranded at railway stations across the country yesterday after State Railway of Thailand (SRT) workers began a partial strike against the Cabinet’s decision to reform the SRT. The Cabinet approved the SRT’s reorganisation plan on June 3. As of press time, the strike is still on. Of 290 trains, about 50 were cancelled right after the State Railway Union announced the strike. Passengers were not informed in advance. The SRT estimates that the strike has cost about Bt15 million in lost revenue.

Stories of the stranded “I caught a free train from Nong Khai to Hua Lamphong

station to connect with a train to get to Satun province. I didn’t know beforehand that trains weren’t running to Satun,” said Jarin Watjung, a 45-year-old Satun resident. “I don’t have enough money to catch a bus, so the only thing I can do is wait for the trains to start running again.” Kimbuai Trongsiri, 71, a fruit vendor on a train running from Udon Thani to Nakhon Ratchasima, said she lost out on several-hundred baht when she was unable to catch a train from Udon Thani to buy fruit in Khon Kaen to sell on the train. Hua Lamphong was crowded with stranded passengers who didn’t have enough money for other modes of travel. Foreign tourists switched to coaches. Bangkok Mass Transit Authority provided 10 buses to transfer passengers who want-

ed to travel by coach from Hua Lamphong to Mor Chit Bus Terminal and the new Southern Bus Terminal free of charge. Passengers complained that they were not informed in advance that many trains heading to the North, Northeast, East and South would be cancelled. Passengers in Phitsanulok, Lampang, Uttaradit, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani and Yala were also affected by cancellations.

Talks set for today Sawit Kaewwarn, chairman of the union, said his members would return to work only when the government heeded the demands of the union. Earlier yesterday, SRT governor Yutthana Thapcharoen said he would meet Sawit at 3pm today to convince him that rail workers would not be affected by reforms to the SRT.

racing pigeon has been found in a temple in Surin’s Muang district, six months after it was lost during an international competition.

Not scared of humans Tambon Ta-Ong head priest Phra Khru Surajitsopon of Wat Ban Jaraen said the bird appeared familiar with people as it didn’t fly away when approached last Monday at the wat. The bird’s left leg carried a chit that read “THAILAND CHA 2008 45509”, so the monk ordered it caged until its owner could be traced.

560-km race The Thai Racing Pigeon Federation (TRPF) said the code showed that the pigeon had competed in the 560-kilometre Thailand Grand Pigeon Race 2008. A total of 1,666 racing pigeons were released from Chiang Mai at 7am on December 11 and were expected to arrive in Bangkok on the same evening, but only 800 reached the finish line, said competition coordinator Boonrit Tulapapong.

I am able to do this after mastering the Chinese martial art technique of using the strength of my finger, from a martial arts master in Singapore.” Hundreds of people, many of them tourists, witnessed the record-breaking coconut piercing in Malacca on Saturday. Oceans choking under pollution Plastic bottles, bags account for up to 80% of marine-waste pollution in some waters, says UN report D P A , Washington / Nairobi

T

he world’s seas are gradually filling with an increasing volume of waste, with plastic making up the single largest part of pollution, according to a new report authored by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Washingtonbased advocacy group, The Ocean Conservancy. Plastic most often found in the form of PET bottles and shopping bags can be found floating in seas around the globe. It accounts for up to 80 per cent of marine waste pollution in some waters, accord-

ing to the report, which was published in Washington and Nairobi to mark World Oceans Day on June 8.

25m cigarettes, filters dumped at sea Smoking also plays a major role in marine pollution. The report’s researchers discovered that of the 103 million pieces of marine pollution categorised in the study, 25 million were cigarette filters or individual cigarettes. This first study of its kind looked at marine waste found in 12 sea regions including the

Mediterranean, the Baltic and the Caribbean.

6.4m tonnes of waste disposed of every year According to earlier findings by UNEP, 6.4 million tonnes of waste are disposed of at sea every year. Every square kilometre of sea has an estimated 46,000 pieces of plastic floating in it. Much of the waste found at sea is caused by tourism. A good example of how tourism and clean oceans are not mutually exclusive can be found in Mauritius and the Seychelles, which are not contributing to waste pollution in the Indian Ocean even though they are very popular tourist destinations.

Police say a six-year-old boy accidentally shot dead his father, a soldier home for Father’s Day after fighting Muslim rebels in the southern Philippines. Police Officer Hermogenes Capili says Private First Class Apolonio Pacioles asked his son to fetch his .45-calibre pistol at their home in Manila’s Quezon City suburb early on Sunday. Police Officer Edwin dela Cruz says the boy got the weapon and removed its magazine as his father had taught him, not knowing that a bullet was loaded in the chamber. Capili says Pacioles ignored the boy who then cocked the gun’s hammer with his finger on the trigger and shot his 45-year-old father in the abdomen. Dela Cruz says the boy and his mother reported the incident to police. – AP

liza Manyoza, a banana vendor in Malawi’s colonial-era capital Zomba, says she has never heard a Madonna song. She only knows the American pop icon as an “adopter” of orphaned children. “I am told she is a nice woman who wants to help our children,” said Manyoza, 39. She knew that Madonna had adopted David Banda, a toddler the star met at an orphanage three years ago, but had just learned of the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal’s decision to grant her a second adoption of a girl named Chifundo “Mercy” James, who left Malawi on Friday to join the singer in London. “That’s great news and very nice of her,” Manyoza said. “But how many children can she take out of Malawi? Where are the rich Malawians who should be adopting children?” Her sentiments echo those heard around the country. Malawi is one of the poorest nations in the world. The government says 1.5 million children have been orphaned by Aids – a figure that represents nearly 10 per cent of the total population. n aspiring actress (played by Lanna Cummings) falls in love with a hotshot and egotistic theatre director (Sarawut Martthong) who’s married with children and is staging a production adapted from the Thai classic “Phra Lor”. A play within a play with echoing on- and offstage storylines and themes is nothing new, but it never gets old. Written and directed by Patravadi Mejudhon, “Ror Rak Lor Lilit, Lilit Phra Lor” blends dance, rap, acrobatics and opera in fine balance, neither a hodgepodge nor a onestop intercultural shop. Each bold, eyebrow-raising experiment in the show has been thought through. When “Yor Yod Phra Lor” is sung and danced in hip-hop style, it becomes a commentary on the music industry. When “Soi Saeng Daeng” is given the opera treatment, accompanied by butoh-inspired movements, the eeriness corresponds to the supernatural scene.

Never a dull moment There is no dull moment in the two-act, two-hour “Phra Lor”, thanks to a strong ensemble and a willingness to explore. Anant Narkkong and Anothai Nitibhon’s music direction and American violinist Kyle Dillingham raise the roof,

proving that East and West, traditional and modern, can enjoy a happy marriage. Ruth Pongstaphone’s costume design is a treat. Manuel Lutgenhorst’s set design is smart and practical, and his lighting design effectively creates different moods for different scenes. A major letdown is the subpar sound system that doesn’t complement the beauty of the spoken language. It’s as if the actors’ wireless microphones are connected to a different set than those of the musicians. If English surtitles were added, foreign audiences would also enjoy the language. This success of “Phra Lor” is additional proof that the consecration of actress, dancer, choreographer, playwright, director and producer Patravadi Mejudhon is long overdue.

The magic of Johnson’s At 120 years of age, the world’s best-known baby powder is still an icon of infancy By Kupluthai Pungkanon D A I LY X P R E S S

o you think my baby’s spoiled? No, kids always smell like that. It’s an old joke that’s probably completely lost on the good folks at Johnson & Johnson’s, who are in the business of making babies smell beautiful. The US firm virtually owns the patent on “that newborn baby smell” thanks to its world-famous baby powder, which still guarantees freshness after 120 years on the market. The soft powder made from only natural ingredients, with no colouring or chemical preservatives, was treated to a birthday party at the Oriental Hotel recently, at which three young mothers attested to its magic. Ausanee Mahakitsiri Voravanich, Thipvipa Srivikorn and Darika Teutvongse were

there with their gorgeous little daughters – Tonnam, 18month-old Panpan and fourmonth-old Peppin, respectively. All three mums thrilled at the comfort they get using Johnson’s baby powder, praising its gentleness and distinctive scent. “My mother used the powder on me when I was a little girl, so why not follow her example in taking care of my two babies?” Darika said. There’s been concern lately that using skin powder might hamper the baby’s ability to breathe, but Thipvipa pointed out that it depends on how the powder is applied. “Never pour the powder directly on the baby,” she cautioned. “I put it on my hands first. And I normally use it only when my daughter feels sticky, especially on her bottom because of the diaper.”

SKIN DEEP What anti-ageing medicine can do for you I heard about “anti-ageing medicine”, but what exactly is it? Who benefits the most from it?

Anti-ageing medicine is a clinical medical speciality that’s based on the early detection, prevention and reversal of the effects of ageing. With early detection and appropriate intervention, it’s possible to slow down the process. Through blood tests, the doctor assesses the patient’s concentration of key hormones and other chemicals and whether they’re in the normal or “optimal” range. The doctor can then determine what diet, vitamins and supplements will best benefit the patient. For example, weight gain can be related to thyroid problems, insulin resistance or metabolic deceleration. Based on lab tests, the doctor will custom-design a weight-control programme to resolve any imbalance. The replacement of deficient nutrients, vitamins and supplements will improve the patient’s ability to lose and manage weight. This supplementation, plus exercise and, if necessary, non-invasive technology, will ensure much more effective weight loss. Anti-ageing medicine is suitable for anyone who wants to improve his or her quality of life. Those who benefit most are the ones motivated to stay healthy in their later years. Brazilian fashion

T

op model Gisele Bundchen and Madonna’s toyboy Jesus Luz opened Brazil’s top fashion show last week, but the focus was just as much on race as the racy summer-wear and celebrities on parade. For the first time, the Sao Paulo Fashion Week - Latin America’s pre-eminent fashion event - has imposed quotas requiring at least 10 per cent of the models to be black or indigenous. The measure was brought in after intense pressure from antiracism groups and Brazilian prosecutors who blasted the SPFW's longstanding bias towards white models. Previously, only a handful of black models featured among the 350 or so that sashayed down the catwalk - usually less than three per cent, far from representative in a country where nearly 50 per cent of the population is of African descent. A group of 30 black models holding an informal "Fashion Black" runway show in front of the SPFW venue applauded the boost the quota was expected to give to their careers. The organiser of the impromptu show, Andre de Souza, said he backed the quota, but only as a first step towards what should be full inclusion of blacks in Brazil's fashion industry. He and the black models said the preponderance of whites in the SPFW was symptomatic of a wider discrimination in Brazil against blacks born of its slavery past. Backstage in the SPFW, several of the 40 fashion companies taking

EPA

8

part were happy to show off the one or two black models being prepared for their runway sorties. A few employees, though, said quietly - and well away from reporters' microphones - that the measure did not take into account that the European-inspired fashions were created for thin white bodies, not more rounded and chesty black physiques. They also said that very few blacks bought their wares - a situation that pointed up the vast income gap between the predominantly black poorer half of Brazil and the predominantly white middle- and upper-class. The June 17-22 SPFW was being presented under a French-inspired “Passion for Fashion” theme that

also showcased displays of French haute couture, part of a monthslong cultural programme celebrating the Year of France in Brazil. Bundchen, one of the world's top supermodels, led the mode march, starring in a show by the fashion house Colcci with Luz, a formerly unknown male model who has become a minicelebrity in Brazil thanks to a fling with Madonna. Jesus Luz, the Brazilian model described in the media as

the boyfriend of US singer Madonna, takes to the catwalk wearing a creation by Colcci brand during the Sao Paulo Fashion Week at the Parque Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo.

ardcore gamers won’t be able to resist the Acer Aspire G7710 Predator, a powerful computer with a funky unconventional design and computing muscles that chew 3D-extensive games. The unconventional design starts with its chassis, which is huge and heavy, and comes in stunning black that contrasts well with the blue diode lights. There’s even a cover that lifts up like a mask and looks just like the head of an Autobot in “Transformers”. The Predator is powered by Intel’s Core i7 920 processor running at 2.66 GHz. The new processor has eight cores and can encode video up to 40 per cent faster than other Intel processors. And as graphics can be rendered across eight software threads, it’s impressive at handling demanding applications like image rendering, photo retouching, editing and 3D games rendering. The Predator’s performance is enhanced with its superfast 12 gigabytes of DDR3 1066 MHz memory.

The video processing horsepower comes from two graphics adapter cards – NVIDIA GeForce GTS-150 each with 1 GB video memory. With the factory setting, you can connect four monitors to the two VGA cards. But you can bridge the graphic horsepower of the two cards with a provided link cable that enables Nvidia SLi (scalable link interface) technology. The Predator also has 1 terabyte hard disk and comes with a Blu-ray drive. The test found that the Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 flew on the Predator with beautiful and smooth 3D graphics rendering. However, before buying games, do make sure that these can run on 64bit Visa operating system. The Predator took only some 20 minutes to convert formats of a full-length DVD movie and got the

full 5.9 score on Vista benchmarks for it graphics’ performance. But surprisingly, Windows did not start up any faster than on other computers, though it may improve when run on Vista Home Premium. The Predator has a hefty price tag Bt89,900 excluding VAT and it does not come with a monitor.

Samuel Eto’o

Barcelona president Joan Laporta said he hoped Samuel Eto'o would see out the rest of his career at the club despite interest in the Cameroon striker from major European clubs. “Eto’o is the best striker in the world, highly valued in the market. It would be nice if he could finish his career at Barca," said Laporta. But "Eto’o’s contract ends next season and that requires us to sit and talk. The club wants him to continue for many more years.”

Liverpool get boost from sale George Gillett’s sale of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team could throw Liverpool a £340 million lifeline, the Sun reported. The sale of the Canadiens to the Molson brewing family for that amount is set to make Gillett a £178 million profit and rescue Liverpool from a “financial nightmare”, the newspaper added. The Anfield co-owner and his partner Tom Hicks have been weighed down by a £350 million debt incurred as part of their takeover of Liverpool in 2007, the paper reported. They face a July 24 deadline to repay or refinance the loan. – Bloomberg

Striker Tevez for Man City Carlos Tevez will complete his £25.5 million transfer to Manchester City in the next few days, the Daily Mirror reported. The Manchester United forward agreed to join City two weeks ago, the paper added. The Argentine decided to leave United “well before” the end of the season as he felt coach Alex Ferguson didn’t rate him highly enough to be a first choice, the Mirror said. Tevez was determined to quit, even though United were prepared to pay the fee required to

turn his loan into a permanent transfer, the paper said. He will join City on a five-year deal next week unless Chelsea matches the £130,000-a-week salary he’ll get at Eastlands, the Daily Mail reported. – Bloomberg

Inter could let Ibra, Maicon go: Moratti Inter Milan could let stars Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Douglas Maicon go and have confirmed their interest in Karim Tevez Benzema. Inter president Massimo Moratti told yesterday’s edition of the Il Giornale daily that he would like to welcome the 21-year-old striker, but “without spending too much money.” The future of the Swedish striker Ibrahimovic and of Brazilian right-back Maicon, both aged 27, could lie elsewhere. Ibrahimovic could to be looking for challenges elsewhere and the defender Maicon expects a better contract after three convincing seasons. “As a fan, I’d like them to stay, but as a president, with a budget to balance, I say that if they want to go they can go, ”Moratti said. – DPA

t one point Sunday afternoon, Tiger Woods was 15 shots off the lead at the US Open, where Ricky Barnes was threatening to turn the tournament into a runaway. By nightfall, Woods was seven back, and a dozen players had the lead in realistic sight. This US Open is far from over. Final-round play resumed yesterday morning at Bethpage Black, with Barnes – who made

bogey on six of his final 13 holes – tied with playing partner Lucas Glover for the lead at 7 under, both with 17 holes remaining. They’ve got a sizeable cushion over Phil Mickelson, David Duval, Hunter Mahan and Ross Fisher, all of whom sit 2 under early in their rounds. It’s an unlikely duo in the final group. Forget leading: Barnes has only been within 10 shots of the lead after the third round of a PGA Tour event three times before in his career, and Glover has exactly one win on tour. For a while on Sunday, they seemed by far the class of the field. Taking advantage of Bethpage’s soft fairways and

greens – and making plenty of great shots along the way – Barnes joined an exclusive group early in his third round, when he made a 25-foot eagle putt on the par-5 4th hole. That sent him to 11 under; in US Open history, only Woods, Jim Furyk and Gil Morgan had ever been double digits below par. It didn’t last long. Barnes started to leak shots around the midpoint of the third round, quite possibly feeling the strain that comes with leading a major for the first time. “I’ve got to get my legs moving with my arms,” Barnes said after the third round. “We all know that those go together.”

Bernie won’t let F1 collapse

Bernie Ecclestone in the paddocks at the Silverstone circuit.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said yesterday he was not prepared to see the sport collapse in the face of the breakaway movement from eight F1 teams. “I have given 35 years of my life and more to Formula One. My marriage broke up because of Formula One, so I am sure as hell not going to let things disintegrate over what is, in the end, basically nothing,” he told the Times. “If you analyse the problems, there aren’t any that can’t be easily solved.” Ecclestone said that if the Formula One Teams Association went ahead with their decision to create a breakaway series, only disaster would follow. “If that started, everybody would be suing everybody else and there would be no other series,” he told the newspaper. – A F P

Fabiano hits brace for daughters

BRAZIL GO NUTS Italy crushed 3-0, dumped out of Confed Cup AFP, Pretoria, South Africa

razil coach Dunga says his team can still improve despite the emphatic way they tore Italy apart to end the world champions’ Confederations Cup campaign. The samba kings devastated their arch-rivals late on Sunday with three goals in an eightminute spell with Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano bagging a brace and Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena scoring an own goal. It was the first time Italy have conceded three goals before half-time since 1957 and with the United States recording a shock 3-0 win over Egypt in Rustenberg, Italy missed out on making the semi-finals on goal difference. By topping Group B, Brazil avoid Spain and play South Africa on Thursday for a place in the final after the hosts finished runner-up in Group A. The United States take on the European champions on Wednesday. “We still have a lot to improve on,” said Dunga. “We have players with great technical ability and the more we work together the more we can grow, but we are on the right track. “We showed against Italy that we were superior in all aspects of the game. We beat the world champions and we did it in an efficient way.” Next up are the hosts, coached by Brazilian Joel Santana, someone Dunga knows well. “They are coached by Joel

Luis Fabiano, left, evades Gianluigi Buffon as the Italian goalkeeper grabs the ball. Santana, who is one of the more respected Brazilian coaches, and together we have had many meetings,” he said. “South Africa have a strong team, especially physically and they will also have the full support of the home crowd. We must be careful.” Italy’s ageing team failed to shine here and coach Marcello Lippi is sure to face stinging criticism back home where he has been slammed for failing to make better use of his younger players. “We are disappointed with our performance and we are very much aware of that. This does not reflect the way we usually perform. We were certainly

not at our best in this championship,” he admitted. An apathetic Italy slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat against Egypt in their last group game and Lippi made four changes to try and reverse the slide. Out went Fabio Grosso, Gennaro Gattuso, Giuseppe Rossi and Fabio Quagliarella and in came Andrea Dossena, Riccardo Montolivo, Luca Toni and Mauro Camoranesi. But it made little difference against a Brazilian team that took full advantage of Italy’s defensive frailties. Italy finally woke up in the second half. But despite last ditch efforts they failed to redeem themselves.

Sunday was Father’s Day in South Africa and for Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano it really was a special day. Not only did he manage to score two goals in Brazil’s 3-0 rout in a Confederations Cup Group B match played in Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld Stadium, he also managed to fulfil a promise he made to his daughter a few days earlier. The Sevilla striker, who was not surprisingly named the man of the match for his performance against the Azzurri, said: “On Thursday, the day of our match against the US, my daughter Giovana had her birthday. I promised her that I would score a goal for her. “We won the game 3-0, but I could not score. I then told her that I would score one for her in our next game and I am very happy that I managed to do that. “I am very happy that I can dedicate my two goals to my two daughters Giovana and Gabriela.” But the goals were not only important for the 28year-old because he was able to make good on a promise to his daughter, they were also important because they kept him in the running to retain his place in the Brazilian national team. Brazilian coach Carlos Dunga is in the very envious position of having a whole array of exceptional strikers to chose from. “I have a dream and that dream is to be a part of the World Cup squad next year in South Africa. “It is still a year to go, but when you are called up you have to use all the opportunities.”

his North West Province town is barely more than a decent throw-in away from Sun City but not even the most adventurous of risk takers at the gamblers’ paradise would have dared put a dime on the United States making it to the Confederations Cup semi-finals. Bob Bradley’s Stars and Stripes turned up for their last Group B fixture against African

champions Egypt on Sunday as such massive outsiders midfielder Clint Dempsey only realised they could still grab the runners-up spot and with it a ticket to the last four 24 hours before kick-off. Lopsided defeats to Brazil and world champions Italy, losses compounded by having a player sent off in each game, had seemingly left them facing an early trip home. But Dempsey’s 71st minute

header coming on top of goals from Charlie Davies and Michael Bradley, the coach’s son, saw the Concacaf Gold Cup winners sink Egypt and pip Italy on number of goals scored. Man of the match Dempsey revealed he was only conscious the States had pulled off a Confed Cup conjuring trick when he saw the bench go wild on the final whistle. “And to be honest I was only first aware that we could still go

through the day before the game,” the Fulham midfielder said. Captain Landon Donovan added: “We thought it was our last game, honestly, we just wanted to go out and give a good showing.” Bradley junior was in dreamland. “It’s an amazing thing and I can’t even begin to properly explain how happy I am right now. We proved people wrong.”

All-rounder Afridi wins match to become the toast of a troubled nation Pakistan’s swashbuckling allrounder Shahid Afridi yesterday became the toast of the troubled nation after his performance with both bat and ball lifted his team to World Twenty20 success. The 29-year-old rose to the occasion at the tournaments’ key moments, with successive half-centuries in the semi-final and final and taking three crucial wickets – performances which earned him two man-of-the-match

awards. Afridi hit an unbeaten 54 to help Pakistan successfully chase down a modest 139-run target set by Sri Lanka in the final at Lord’s on Sunday. Hundreds of fans gathered yesterday at Afridi’s house in the southern port city of Karachi, keen to congratulate his family. “I am the proudest of all the Pakistani fathers because my son has given me the best gift on Father’s Day,” said Afridi’s father Sahibzada Fazl-

ur Rehman. “What I always tell him is that he should play for the country and for the people who adore him. I am elated that he gave the whole nation moments of happiness,” Rehman added. Afridi, who hails from the tribal Khyber district in the North West Frontier Province, is the most popular Pakistani player, especially among ethnic Pashtuns in the northwest area troubled by Talibanlinked violence.

“I am really happy, Afridi played an excellent innings. I feel proud of my country,” said Abdul Jalal, a young student displaced by fighting in the northwest who is now living in a cramped refugee camp. Afridi is equally popular in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city. When not playing cricket, Afridi works with the Islamic Relief Fund and often visits the United States to drum up funds for people displaced by Taliban violence.

akistan won the Twenty20 World Cup with an eightwicket victory over Sri Lanka at Lord’s on Sunday that sparked jubilant scenes in its homeland as thousands of fans took to the streets to celebrate the win. “We needed a victory like that,” said Pakistan captain Younis Khan. “I think it’s a gift for the whole nation.” Man-of-the-match Shahid Afridi made an unbeaten 54 as Pakistan made 139-2 to overhaul Sri Lanka’s total. Kamran Akmal added 37 as he put on 48 for the first wicket with Shahzaib Hasan. Sri Lanka’s failure to take early wickets proved crucial as Afridi and Shoaib Malik (24) clinched victory with eight balls to spare. “I think there were a few turning points,” Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara said. “The first six overs was one, the fact that Pakistan didn’t lose wickets in their first six overs was another and Shahid Afridi batted through. Those three things turned the game.” Earlier, Sri Lanka, had recovered to reach 138-6 after Abdul Razzaq had ripped through their top order to take 3-20. Sangakkara anchored the innings with an unbeaten 64 and Angelo Mathews (35 not out) helped steer the pre-match favourites to a defendable, but ultimately inadequate total. Pakistan made a sluggish start to the run chase and nearly lost Hasan in the fourth over

The Pakistan team celebrate with the World Twenty20 trophy at Lord’s. when Mathews was inches away from taking a spectacular diving catch. It was 39-0 after the powerplay and Akmal accelerated the innings in the next over, hitting Mathews for six over square leg. Sri Lanka had to wait until the eighth over to take their first wicket when Sangakkara stumped Akmal off Sanath Jayasuriya’s first ball. Hasan was then caught by Jayasuriya off Muttiah Muralitharan at the start of the tenth, leaving Pakistan on 63-2 at the halfway point of the innings. But that was the last wicket to fall and Pakistan ultimately cruised to a comfortable victory.

WE NEEDED A VICTORY LIKE THIS.I THINK IT’S A GIFT FOR THE WHOLE NATION. Younis Khan, Pakistan captain The run rate hovered around eight an over until Afridi smashed a six off Muralitharan at the start of the 14th over, then a four off the next ball. Udana’s 18th over effectively sealed Sri Lanka’s fate when he

conceded 19 runs, Afridi hitting a six from the fifth ball then a four from Udana’s next delivery, a no ball. That left Pakistan needing just seven runs from the last two overs and they clinched victory with eight balls to spare when Afridi scrambled a leg bye off Lasith Malinga. Sri Lanka’s initial delight at winning the toss lasted just five balls. Tillakaratne Dilshan was named as the player of the tournament, but Mohammad Aamer drew him into a miscued pull shot. Pakistan captain Younis announced his retirement from Twenty20 cricket saying he has become too old for the game.

akistan captain Younis Khan urged the international cricket community to return to the troubled Asian nation after leading his side to victory in the World Twenty20 final against Sri Lanka. Sunday’s eight-wicket success at Lord’s came just months after armed militants attacked the Sri Lanka team bus on the way to a Test in Lahore. That March 3 incident led to the suspension of international cricket in Pakistan. And the International Cricket Council subsequently announced the country would no longer stage matches during the 2011 World Cup in Asia because of security concerns. “Everybody knows we need a victory like this, especially a World Cup, in these days, it is a gift for the whole nation,” Younis said. “Now we are champions, I am requesting all other countries, come to Pakistan. Especially for the youngsters, we need home series. “How can we promote cricket and motivate my son and my neighbour’s son? That’s why we need cricket in Pakistan. “It’s not our fault. Sports should be away from politics, sports doesn’t need politics.” There were many at Lord’s, and among the watching television audience, who would have sympathised with Younis after an event where, both on and off the field, Pakistan showed why world cricket needs them as much as Pakistan need world cricket.

The 17th-seeded Blake lost to Andreas Seppi of Italy 7-5 6-4 7-6 (5) yesterday, making the American the first seeded player to lose this year at the All England Club. Blake held one set point in the third, leading 6-5, but he missed a forehand long to end a 23-stroke exchange. Blake then took a 5-0 lead in the tiebreaker, before Seppi won the match’s last seven points. Blake has lost three Grand Slam matches in a row, including a firstround exit at the French Open last month and a fourth-round defeat at the Australian Open in January. Meanwhile, India's Sania Mirza won her first round match, beating Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany 6-2 2-6 6-2.
