New home for the old The elderly will get to spend their last years at a resort, thanks to BMA The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is planning to build a resort-style home for the elderly by Nakhon Chaisri River in Nakhom Pathom province. “This home will be able to accommodate 1,000 elderly residents – 500 men and 500 women,” Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribratra said yesterday.

Riverside retreat The budget for the 34-rai project is Bt300 million. Sukhumbhand said the plan needed Bangkok Council’s green light before it could go ahead. “I will also have to consult Nakhon Pathom’s governor,” he said. “It should be completed by 2012.” Currently, the BMA runs just one home for old folks – “Ban Bangkhae II”, for 150 elderly women. TEENS ON THE EDGE Study of youngsters finds worrying levels of alcohol use and sexual promiscuity; almost one in 10 have considered suicide DAILY XPRESS

ome 8.5 per cent of the young population often think seriously about committing suicide, the Department of Health said yesterday. This was revealed in a survey conducted on 2,767 students aged between 13 and 15 years old. “The findings are shocking,” the department’s deputy director general Dr Sopon Mekthon says.

Ending it all According to him, 9.5 per cent of the boys and 7.5 per cent of the girls questioned had considered taking their own lives in the past. “Of the respondents, 8.1 per cent

said the reason for this was sheer loneliness,” says Sopon, adding that 3.1 per cent did not have any close friends. Of the 27.2 per cent who said their peers had bullied them at least once over the past month, almost half said they had suffered lasting injuries as a result. The survey also discovered that most of the children had tried smoking and alcohol. “Nearly 20 per cent said they had been drunk at least once, while 73.7 per cent said they had smoked cigarettes, some admitting to first lighting up at as young as 13 years old,” Sopon says. Apart from smoking and drinking, 10.1 per cent of the boys and 1.8 per

cent of the girls said that they have had at least two sexual partners.

Family problems Sopon says family problems probably played a major role in children’s worrying behaviour. “More than 38.5 per cent said their parents never understood their problems or concerns,” he says. The survey also revealed that the parents of 26.5 per cent of the respondents had no idea what their children were doing in their free time, because “mum and dad were always busy”. This is reflected in the 18.2 per cent of the students who admitted playing truant over the past month. “These findings will have to be referred to the Department of Mental Health so we can jointly find ways to help our younger generation,” Sopon said.

At the Esplanade Shopping Mall, Pol Maj-General Panu Kerdlarppol, deputy chief in charge of traffic, told the crowd gathered at the programme’s launch that a recent health check had found many of Bangkok’s 4,430 traffic cops were overweight and had high cholesterol levels.

each officer lose at least five kilograms of weight, he said. The officer who loses the most weight will be rewarded.

The Ratchadapisek Criminal Court yesterday sentenced three women – guilty of procuring two women for prostitution in South Africa – each to a seven-and-a-half-year jail term and ordered them to pay Bt300,000 in compensation to the victims. The lawsuit said the defendants, Jiraporn Butanai, 32, Bang-on Sibbold, 35, and Wanpen Phromthat, 32, convinced Ying and Noi (not their real names) that working in a bar in South Africa would yield lucrative incomes and asked the pair for Bt30,000 to arrange a trip to South Africa. On arrival, the three women detained Ying and Noi and forced them to provide sexual services to an average of four customers per day. The two women eventually escaped and went for help at the Thai Embassy, which led to the arrest of Jiraporn in Chon Buri and the other two in Rayong. Initially, the court sentenced each to a 10-year jail term, but after taking into account their confessions the sentence was reduced. D A I LY X P R E S S

Corruption hotline overheats in China

Police impotent over Korea’s first swinger’s club South Korea’s first swingers’ club – where couples can swap partners for sex – has made a roaring debut, leaving police who want to close it down struggling to respond. The club opened earlier this month in Seoul’s prosperous Kangnam District where business appears to be thriving, with many visitors writing favourable comments on its website. The club only accepts adults who have booked through the Internet. Couples watch or have sex with one or more partners. “Law experts told us there is no legal basis to crack down on this club,” said one of its unidentified owners. Police admitted that it would be difficult to apply existing laws banning prostitution or obscene performances in this case. Still, “we’ve told the Kangnam police station to find legal provisions to crack down on it”, said Yang Sung-Cheol, a senior officer at the Seoul Police Agency. AFP

BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR Calls for calm as a dozen distraught Michael Jackson fans take own lives AGENCIES

N

early a dozen of Michael Jackson’s fans have reportedly committed suicide following the King of Pop’s sudden death. Australians fans are said to be seeking help from a suicide prevention hotline, US media reported yesterday. At least 50 callers seeking help from suicide prevention hotline Lifeline Australia have told counsellors that Jackson’s death on June 26 has left them distressed. Gary Taylor from London, who owns Jackson’s’s online fan club has said that he was aware of about 12 suicides fol-

lowing the performer’s death. “It is a serious situation that these people are going through but Michael Jackson would never want this,” News.com.au quoted Taylor as saying. “He would want them to live,” he added. Lifeline CEO Dawn O’Neil said that while there has not been “a dramatic increase” in calls to counsellors, people have spoken about how Jackson’s death has affected them. “We have had some calls related to this,” said O’Neil. “In some cases, [a celebrity’s death] can be very distressing.”

China’s new government corruption hotline was overwhelmed in its first week with more than 17,000 tips and an unknown number unable to get through on overloaded lines, state media reported yesterday. China experiences tens of thousands of riots officially termed “mass incidents” each year, many due to grievances over injustices committed by the police, government officials and others in positions of power.

Malaysians refuse to work as maids

The calls came as a friend to the famous family, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, urged fans not to “self-destruct”. “This is a time when hearts are heavy,” Jackson said. “There is great pain but great cause to celebrate Michael’s life. It made Michael happy saying ‘We Are The World’. Don’t self destruct.”

A Malaysian scheme to train local people as maids to reduce dependence on foreign workers has failed due to poor pay, it was reported yesterday. Graduates of six courses launched by the government have refused the low wages offered by employers. Indonesia last week said it would stop sending its nationals to Malaysia after a 43-yearold Malaysian woman was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to her Indonesian maid.

ace up your hiking boots, set up your tent and roll out your sleeping bag. It’s time to go camping with director Penek Ratanaruang and his latest movie, “Nang Mai” (“Nymph”). A romantic drama, ghost story and nature show combine in this thriller about a marriage that’s lost in a thicket of dysfunction. Floating like a moth, the camera pierces the impenetrable forest in vivid detail, with every sinuous root and knotted branch becoming a lead character. The actors rightly keep their portrayals subtle. No one can compete with Mother Nature. Pen-ek spins a taut, thrilling tale that begins with the longago rape of a young woman. Her screams fade, and nothing’s heard but the burbling

stream and the drone of forest critters. And then the woman’s two assailants are floating dead in the water.

XTRA INTO THE JUNGLE >> “Nang Mai” (“Nymph”) opens today.

In modern Bangkok, a young couple endure a troubled marriage. Whatever spark Nop and May (Wanida “Gybzy” Termthanaporn and Nopachai

“Peter” Jayanama) felt when they met has long since been snuffed out. Office worker May is having an affair with her boss Korn (Chamanan Wanwinwet). Nop, a nerdy photographer, seems focused only on his work. They barely talk to one another, and when Nop does try to get intimate he’s rebuffed. They decide on a romantic camping trip, but the divide remains. Headache-prone May stays in the tent with her cellphone and laptop while Nop wanders the woods, photographing flora.

Heavy breathing

Nopachai ‘Peter’ Jayanama stars as Nop, a photographer who seems a little weird after his encounter with a strange tree.

He’s drawn to one particular tree, and starts caressing it. Then he goes missing. Calls to Nop’s phone are answered, but only by the sound of heavy breathing.

>> The “Director’s Cut” is playing in most cinemas. Pen-ek considers it to be the definitive version. It’s 90 minutes long. >> The “Cannes Version”, which is 15 minutes longer, is playing at SFW CentralWorld. >> On the Web: www.Nang MaiTheMovie.com.

May consults a pair of dryly comic forest rangers and is given an amulet necklace, but it’s no use. Distraught, she heads back to the city and into the eager arms of Korn. Then Nop shows up. Seemingly reborn, he’s earthier and sensuous. And thirsty – he drinks a lot of water. He disappears again, and May seems different. Korn is alarmed. And they return to the forest.

outh Korean superstars Dong Bang Shin Ki proved that they are as popular as ever, selling out their “3rd Asia Tour – Mirotic” concert at Impact Arena last weekend and drawing in fans not just from Thailand but also from other countries as far away as South Korea and Japan. The concert didn’t offer much more variety than their last show here in Bangkok but was still a feast for the eyes, with plenty of hi-tech gizmos plus well-choreographed scenes accompanied by a backstory screened on the giant monitors. For example, as Max sang “Balloon”, his bandmates flew over the stage while the story unfolded on screen. In “Wrong Number”, all five played drew their guns and fought it out gangster-style. Screams were loud as the curtains rose to reveal the screens showing the five heartthrobs apparently floating up from the depths of the ocean. Seconds later, they were on stage for a tight opening set that included “Hey! (Don’t Bring Me Down)”, “Are You Good Girl?”, “Rising Sun” and “Paradise”. As usual, each of the boys performed separately, with Micky playing piano for his own composition “Love Bye Love”, Xiah and U-Know both showing off

Xabi Alonso

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso will talk with manager Rafael Benitez this week about his future with the club, the Sun said. Real Madrid is willing to pay around £23 million for Alonso. The 27-year-old Spain international said he’s unsure where he’ll be playing next season, but would be open to a move home because he feels Benitez is pushing him out of the door. “I don’t see why a marriage with Madrid is impossible,” he said.

Tottenham chase Sweden’s Berg Tottenham have joined the chase for Marcus Berg and will have to bid up to £10 million for the Sweden Under-21 striker, the Daily Mirror said. Everton manager David Moyes is also considering a move for Berg, who was the top scorer at the European Under-21 Championship tournament with seven goals in four games. Meanwhile, Tottenham want cash and midfielders Marcos Senna and Sebastian Eguren from Villarreal after the Spanish club inquired about striker Roman Pavlyuchenko, the Times said. – Bloomberg

‘El Magic’ to hang up boots Australian rugby league’s record point-scorer Hazem El Masri announced his retirement yesterday, ending a stellar career which earned him the nickname “El Magic” for his nerveless goalkicking. The 33-year-old, also the National Rugby League’s highest-profile Muslim player, said he would bow out at the end of the season after guiding the Canterbury Bulldogs back to the top of the ladder. El Masri revealed he considered stepping down last year but opted to play another season after the Bulldogs finished rockbottom. “I wanted to prove a

point again,” he said. – AFP

Fergie’s mistake cost match: Tevez Carlos Tevez says Alex Ferguson made a mistake by not starting him in Manchester Uniteds 2-0 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League final, the Guardian reported. The Argentine believes the result would have been different if he had been on the field from the start Tevez instead of coming on in the second half with United trailing 1-0. “You cannot argue with Alex Ferguson,” Tevez said. “He is like the president of England. It is impossible. You always lose. But he made a mistake to leave me on the bench.” – Bloomberg

Alonso to have showdown talks

Mathieu Bastareaud was taken to hospital on Monday and is expected to stay there for a fortnight.

TRYING TIMES French rugby player Bastareaud is admitted to psychiatric ward AFP, Paris

F

rench rugby was reeling yesterday following the news that disgraced centre Mathieu Bastareaud had been hospitalised with serious psychological problems following the New Zealand tour scandal. The 20-year-old Stade Francais player is at the centre of a furious row after admitting that he had invented a story about being assaulted outside the team hotel in Wellington following France’s 14-10 defeat

in the second Test against the All Blacks on June 20. “Bastareaud cracks up,” headlined L’Equipe sports daily on its front page on Tuesday. “What should have been an incident with no consequences has turned into a drama.” “Crushed by the weight of his own lies, Mathieu Bastareaud has been hospitalised after what might have been an attempt at suicide.” The player’s original charge of being attacked and hit on the face by four or five men outside the hotel shocked New Zealand and led to an apology from Prime Minister John Key. But police investigations into the matter found video evi-

dence that the player had entered the team hotel on Sunday morning uninjured and had gone to his room minutes later. Bastareaud returned home early from the tour to treat his facial injuries as the rest of the French squad travelled on to Australia and, shocked by the turn of events, he issued an apology saying he believed he had to tell the truth following the wide media coverage. Instead he said that he had sustained the bruises to his face after a drunken fall in his room. He said he had invented the assault story to avoid being sent home by the French team management and upsetting his family, who are deeply religious.

Eto’o demands bonus to move

Kaka passes medical test at Real Kaka has passed his medical examination at Real Madrid and is set to be presented as Florentino Perez’s first big signing since returning as president. Madrid say Kaka’s test results showed “his condition is perfect for playing football.”– AP Samuel Eto’o is not prepared to miss out on bonus.

Samuel Eto’o’s move to Manchester City from Barcelona is in danger of falling apart because he wants a £12.5 million signing-on fee, the Sun said. City have made a £25 million bid for Eto’o and plans to make the Cameroon striker the world’s highest-paid player by giving him £250,000 per week for the next four years. The club’s refusal to pay the bonus could end any hope of the move, the newspaper said. “If there is not a 180-degree turnaround, then he will stay with Barcelona,” Josep Maria Mesalla, Eto’o’s agent, said. Barcelona are willing to let Eto’o go because he only has one year remaining on his contract. Eto’o is not prepared to miss out on the bonus he would receive next season for signing with the club of his choice and is asking for it now, the newspaper said. – Bloomberg

Noppawan marches on

TENNIS

A SECRET WEAPON?

Last year’s runner-up Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand eased past Nastja Kolar of Slovenia 6-1 6-3 to reach junior Wimbledon’s third round yesterday. The fourth seeded Thai survived a tough opening round match against Mexican Alejandra Granillo who extended her to three sets before she advanced with a 3-6 6-3 7-5 victory. Noppawan will play either Romanian Ilinca Stocia or Dutch Tamaryn Hendlertake in the round of 16.

Wimbledon roof could be an ally, says victor Murray AFP, London

Serve and volley dead?

AFP

ndy Murray was angry that his Wimbledon fourth round clash was played under the new 80-million-pound Centre Court roof, but believes the steambath conditions it creates could prove a powerful ally. The third seeded Briton reached the quarter-finals on Monday with a roller-coaster 26 6-3 6-3 5-7 6-3 win over Swiss 19th Stanilas Wawrinka in the latest ever finish in tournament history. The fourth round tie, played under the new roof which was closed following earlier rain, ended at (4.39 Bangkok time) 2139GMT, beating the previous latest end of 2035GMT in 1981. Murray, bidding to become the first British men’s Wimbledon champion since Fred Perry in 1936, will now face Spain’s former French Open winner Juan Carlos Ferrero for a place in the semi-finals. And despite his reservations, he believes he’ll have the advantage if that match is played under the gleaming 1,000-tonne roof. “When you haven’t experienced something before, it’s tough to just walk out there and know how the court’s going to play,” said Murray. “Now I know how I’ll have to change my game if I do play under the roof, and I’ll know the way that the court plays. In my opinion, there’s quite a big difference.” Murray believes the court is a different beast when it is covered, changing the whole dy-

The All England Club centre court with its roof during play between Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka. namic of a grasscourt match. “It’s very heavy and very humid and you are sweating so much. I noticed it very early. “When I finished, it was like I’d been in a bath. So it kind of slowed it down a lot, and I struggled to serve because it wasn’t coming off the strings that quickly.” The roof had been closed earlier in the day when heavy rain briefly replaced the 35-degree sunshine during the women’s last 16 match between top seed Dinara Safina and France’s Amelie Mauresmo. Murray had been warming up in dry, hot outdoor conditions and was surprised to be told just minutes before the start of

his match that the roof would remain shut. “In my opinion, a decision should be made before that match is finished so they can let the players know in a decent amount of time what conditions they’re going to be playing under,” said Murray. “I like playing indoors. But it’s just when you haven’t practiced or ever played a match under a roof on grass, you don’t know what to expect.” The roof had been closed at 1535GMT when 2006 women’s champion Mauresmo was 6-4 14 ahead of top seed Safina. The players returned 45 minutes later with the Frenchwoman eventually going on to lose 4-6 6-3 6-4 to the

world No 1. “It makes the conditions a little bit different. I would say the ball is flying a little bit more,” said Mauresmo. “Visually when the ball is in the air and when you have the overhead, it’s very bright. But it’s a plus, definitely, for the tournament to be able to play [under the roof].” The roof took up to 10 minutes to close, but action could not resume for around another half an hour to allow the air management system to create the right playing conditions. Safina said she enjoyed the experience. “It was a really nice atmosphere to play under the roof, because somehow you feel the crowd a little bit more.”

World No 4 Novak Djokovic yesterday mourned the decline of serve and volley which once dominated Wimbledon. The Serbian, one of an army of players who hit their shots and make their fortunes from the baseline, believes the tournament, with its slower courts, has lost the variety that the more attacking players brought to the game. “The courts are slower than they used to be 10, 15 years ago. Just watching the tennis of 10 years ago and now, it’s a different sport because you had many serve and volley players who were dominating the game back then,” he said “It’s a pity that you don’t have many of those today. That’s why I think we miss players like Mario Ancic, Tim Henman. They were playing serve and volley. “It was just nice to see that game. Now you have got more baseline players, which I guess it’s more suitable to my game. But I think the people would love to see some serve and volley.” AGENCIES

double by Sandro Wagner rounded off a stunning 4-0 success for Germany over England in the European Under-21 championship final to give them their first success in the tournament. The Germans – who added this title to the ones presently in the hands of their Under-17 and Under-19 compatriots – also scored through Gonzalo Castro and the hugely impres-

sive Mesut Ozil. It was England’s first appearance in the final since 1984 and brought to an end a run of having not lost open play in 21 matches and gave German coach Horst Hrubesch echoes of his major success as a player with the then West Germany in the senior 1980 European final over Belgium. England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce revealed he would stay on for the next

campaign for the 2011 finals and try and improve on this performance. “Just before the semi-final I signed a two year deal,” said Pearce, who was suffering another disappointment against Germany having as a player lost to them in the 1990 World Cup semi-final – he missed one of the penalties in the shootout – and then again in the Euro ’96 semi-finals. “I enjoy where I work, my

employers and the players I work with. Why would you walk away from that,” added Pearce, who will also continue to work with England senior coach Fabio Capello, who was unable to attend the final having been at the Confederations Cup in South Africa. England started brightly but the Germans looked to be in control of the match and deservedly doubled their lead in the just after half-time.

hinese superstar centre Yao Ming’s broken left foot could be a “career-threatening” injury, the team doctor for the NBA’s Houston Rockets told the Houston Chronicle yesterday. Tom Clanton told the newspaper that the 7-foot-6 giant’s decision on what sort of treatment he wants to fix the break could see him miss the entire 2009-2010 NBA season or have the potential to risk his career. “At this point, the injury has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career threatening,” Clanton told the Chronicle. “One of the things we are trying to get is a consensus opin-

Vaughan retires Former England captain Michael Vaughan announced his retirement from all professional cricket with immediate effect at Edgbaston yesterday. Vaughan, England’s most successful Test captain, has not played for his country since tearfully resigning the captaincy in August during the home series loss to South Africa. Yorkshire batsman Vaughan said: “After a great deal of consideration, I’ve decided that now is the right time to retire from cricket. “It has been an enormous privilege to have played for and captained my country and this is one of the hardest decisions I have had to make. I feel that the time is right for the focus to shift to the next generation.”

ion on that, to make certain there is no option we are overlooking that would provide an earlier return or would be an option for treatment that he would prefer rather than doing additional surgery.” Yao is planning to meet with several specialists to consider all possible alternatives regarding his fourth bone injury in as many years. Clanton would not say what his advice would be but said Yao could try again to immobilise the foot to hope the fracture heals on its own. “I don’t think that is necessarily a longshot,” Clanton said. “It takes a lot of time. It may be best to take more time. Sometimes that is the best option.”

THE FACT HE IS HAVING NO SYMPTOMS GIVES US REASON FOR OPTIMISM.THE FINDINGS WERE SHOCKING FOR HIM. Tom Clanton

Several previous Yao bone injuries have been solved that way and doctors hopes this one would as well but last week it was learned that the injury has not healed and that Yao would be sidelined indefinitely. But Clanton said the injury had grown worse instead of improving when examined under a CT scan last week. Doctors will re-examine Yao to determine if there has been a reduced supply of blood in the area, which would hinder healing. “The hairline fracture that is present in the previous Xrays shows evidence it has not healed and has extended across the bone,” Clanton said. Surgical options would in-

clude inserted a metal pin inside the foot, a bone graft or possibly rebuilding his arch, an option similar to one used on Cleveland Cavaliers centre Zydrunas Ilgauskas of Lithuania. “It’s more that’s what we’re hoping to avoid but that’s certainly a realistic situation given his injury and the way the bone looked on the CT scan,” Clanton said. “The fact he is having no symptoms gives us reason for optimism.” Yao suffered the injury in a 108-94 home play-off loss on May 8 against the Los Angeles Lakers. “The findings on the CT were shocking for him and for us,” Clanton said.

The women’s National volleyball team are leaving today for the World Championship third round Asia Pool D in Chengdu, China, hoping to claim a berth in the Finals next year. The Pool D contest will be held from July 3 to 5, with four teams – Beijing Games bronze medallists China, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Fiji – competing in the roundrobin competition. Coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai with team captain Wilavan Apinyapong on the eve of the team’s trip to China. Radchatagriengkai said the girls are upbeat about clinching one of the two berths. “I’m confident that my

team can make it to the finals this time. However, we have to study a few more tactics and reduce unforced errors

during the competition,” said Kiattipong. “Hosts China are our strongest rivals in Pool D. Against them, we will try to be consistent and also focus on our defence. We will go all out in attack to try and upset their composure. “The Chinese will be a tough nut to crack, but we will get chances – we just have to take them. As for Fiji, we have already beaten them in straight sets in the second round Pool C here in Thailand. “We also comfortably beat Skif, whose players have been competing in the national Uzbekistan team, in the recent AVC Women’s Club Championship. I’m confident we can repeat the feat in Chengdu,” he said.

BANGKOK

THESPORT Defending champion Venus Williams closed in on a sixth Wimbledon title yesterday with a 6-1 6-2 victory over Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska whose quarter-final challenge melted in the searing heat. Venus, bidding to become the first woman to win a hat-trick of Wimbledon titles since Steffi Graf’s three-in-a-row from 1991 to 1993, next faces either top seed Dinara Safina or Germany’s Sabine Lisicki for a place in the final. The 29-year-old American, seeded three, has now won 32 consecutive sets at the All England Club since Japan’s Akiko Morigami took the second set of their third round match in 2007. She breezed through the first set in 27 minutes, serving up two love games on her way to a 5-0 lead before the 11th seeded Radwanska got on the board. The Polish girl broke to love to lead 2-0 in the second set but that was as good as it got for the slender 20-year-old who had no answer to the American’s brutal hitting power. “I really had to play well. It was close at the start of the second set. She’s a good grasscourt player so I’m happy just to get through,” said the American who has now reached her eighth semi-final in 10 years. “If it was an all-Williams final that would be fantastic but we still have great players to meet and will have to bring our best tennis to the court.”

Closed roof opens Wimbledon’s new era

Rockets centre Yao Ming’s broken left foot is a “career-threatening” injury.
