Monitor-skin boots, anyone? Plans are afoot to breed the lizards for their leather By Janjira Pongrai DAILY XPRESS

he water monitor lizard, or varanus salvator, should be called “Varanuch” instead of hia, which has a lot of negative connotations, a statement from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation says. Director of the Wildlife Conservation Office, Chatchawal Pidamkham, says it is wrong for the public to see this animal as a disgusting creature because it plays a key role in cleaning water systems. “They are very valuable animals and should not be looked at with such disgust. And their value will only increase when they are bred for export,” Chatchawal says.

Fast-growing population The department’s Division for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) plans to commercially breed the animal for use in leather products. Chatchawal reasons that the population of water monitor lizards has been growing so fast that it is starting to affect residents of Samut Prakan, Samut Songkhram, Samut Sakhon and Ratchaburi, with lizards routinely raiding garbage bins, stealing chickens, ducks or fish, and some even sneaking into people’s kitchens.

The department hasn’t been ignoring the problem and in some cases officials are being dispatched to capture the animals and move them to a wildlife-breeding centre, he says. He advises people to keep their trash bins closed and their pets cooped up so the lizards won’t be tempted. CITES division chief Wattana Vetayaprasit says a Sara Buri resident has sought permission to raise water monitor lizards for research, but in order to allow commercial farming of this animal, it would first have to be taken off the list of endangered species. He says: demand for this animal’s hide is very high because it is more valuable than that of crocodiles, which is why several countries breed it for commercial purposes. The division, also wanting to cash in on the monitor lizard, will ask for the law to be amended.

Even though the youngsters protested that they did not want to discuss politics because they did not “know enough about it”, Panthongtae looked like he had something to say. As for the book’s proceeds going to charity, they said it was their father who inspired the decision.

“He’s always taught us to help the poor in society,” Panthongtae said. PETER PAN OF POP MAKES LAST TRIP TO NEVERLAND Michael Jackson’s body to go on public view at the ranch tomorrow; fresh revelations over drug dependence AGENCIES

A

s plans for a public viewing of Michael Jackson’s body were revealed on Tuesday, the tussle for control of his children and estate took on some new twists. Jackson’s body is to be returned to his home at Neverland today for a public viewing for fans tomorrow, CNN reported. The family is to hold a private memorial at Jackson’s fabled central California refuge on Sunday, but no details were released on funeral arrangements for the former King of Pop, who died last week from cardiac arrest at the age of 50. Jackson’s family is expected to leave from

Los Angeles in a 30-vehicle convoy this morning for the 200-kilometre drive to the remote and sprawling ranch in the Santa Barbara hills.

Begged for drug His last journey comes amid fresh revelations about the tragic icon’s agonising dependence on powerful prescription drugs. Citing unidentified sources, the celebrity news website TMZ.com said on Tuesday the drug Propofol was found at Jackson’s rented mansion following his death last Thursday. “There is no conceivable way this drug can be properly prescribed for home use,” a

source told the website, describing it as an “extremely dangerous and potent” substance only available to medical personnel. Earlier, a former nurse who cared for Jackson told CNN that the star pleaded with her to provide him with Diprivan, the brand name for Propofol in the last months of his life. Cherilyn Lee, a health practitioner with more than 20 years experience, said she had refused his request. Lee also revealed that a member of Jackson’s staff sought the drug four days before the singer’s death only to be rebuffed. “I told him [Jackson] this medication is not safe,” Lee said. “He said, ‘I just want to get some sleep. You don’t understand. I just want to be able to be knocked out and go to sleep.’”

eenager Bahia Bakari recovered in hospital yesterday, a day after miraculously surviving the Yemeni jet crash off the Comoros feared to have killed 151 other people. Thirteen-year-old Bakari, who lives in Marseille, France, escaped without serious injuries as the jet attempted to land at Moroni airport at the end of a flight from France. One rescuer told France's Europe 1 radio that the girl was seen swimming in choppy waters in the middle of bodies about two hours after the crash. “We tried to throw a life buoy. She could not grab it. I had to jump in the water to get her,” the rescuer said. “She was shaking, shaking. We put four covers on her. We gave her hot, sugary water. We simply asked her name, village.” The girl’s mother was among the other passengers on Flight IY 626 and is feared dead. A second child may have survived the crash, according to one report. “It seems that another child was found alive early in the morning. We have no detail on the victim because we have not seen him,” said a local-hospital doctor who spoke on condition of anonymity.

First Europeans were cannibals

Europe ended a two-decade ban on wonky fruit and vegetables yesterday by scrapping standards that keep misshapen mushrooms and curvy cucumbers out of supermarkets. British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s called for the rule changes last year after it was prevented from launching a Halloween range of twisted vegetables. It claimed store managers could get a criminal record for selling “zombies’ brains” undersized cauliflowers, “ogres’ toenails” bendy cucumbers and “witches’ fingers” carrots with more than one finger. Now some 26 misshapen types of vegetables – such as cabbage, onions, cherries, avocados and zucchini – can go on sale for the first time without any restrictions. – AP

he remains of the “first Europeans” discovered at an archaeological site in northern Spain have revealed that these prehistoric men were cannibals who particularly liked the flesh of children. “We know that they practiced cannibalism,” said Jose Maria Bermudez de Castro, one of the co-directors of the Atapuerca project, a Unesco World Heritage Site. A study of the remains revealed that they turned to cannibalism to feed themselves and not as part of a ritual, that they ate their rivals after killing them, mostly children and adolescents. “It is the first well-documented case of cannibalism in the history of humanity, which does not mean that it is the oldest,” he said. The human remains discovered in the caves “appeared scattered, broken, fragmented, mixed with other animals such as horses, deer, rhinoceroses, all kinds of animals caught in hunting” and eaten by humans, he said. The remains probably correspond to the first humans who reached Europe, known as Homo antecessor, after the Latin word for pioneer or explorer. Homo antecessor, who lived before Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens, probably came to the caves of Atapuerca after a long migration from Africa and through the Middle East, northern Italy and France. They found water and food in abundance, could hunt wild boar, horses, deer, “which means that they did not practice cannibalism through a lack of food. They killed their rivals and used the meat,” de Castro said. “Another interesting aspect is that most of the 11 individuals that we have identified were children or adolescents. “We think that there are also two young adults including a female, which indicates that they killed the base of the demographic pyramid of the group.”

Beethoven’s ‘Elise’ identified A German scholar says he’s finally identified the mysterious woman behind “Für Elise”, one of Beethoven’s best-known melodies and now a ringtone for millions of mobile phones. Musicologist and renowned Beethoven expert, Klaus Martin Kopitz, believes the tune was named after Elisabeth Roeckel (1793-1883), a German soprano. “It is known that, when Beethoven wrote the piece in 1810, the two enjoyed a close friendship," Kopitz said. – AFP

Thousands of Hong Kongers joined a parade yesterday of Chinese dragon dancers and children garbed in opera costume as the territory marked the 12th anniversary of its return to China. The parade kicked off shortly after Hong Kong and Chinese flags were raised in an early morning ceremony beside the territory's famed Victoria Harbour that drew hundreds of officials and onlookers. “It is time for celebration, not a time for discontent,'” said Ko Po-chun, 49, after watching Hong Kong singers and Chinese soldiers’ martial arts performance. With nods to traditional Chinese culture, both events were meant to emphasise unity with the mainland. But they contrasted sharply with a street protest later in the day expected to draw tens of thousands of Hong Kongers calling for democracy. – AP

hai-Kazakh action thrillers: if nothing else, it’s a new genre in the making. But the producers of “The Florist”, shot in Bangkok last month, hope the cinematic collaboration proves not just novel but profitable. “The Florist” pairs Kazakstan’s 72-year-old megastar Asanali Ashimov with veteran actress Duangjai Hathaikarn, 54, as his longago lover. The plot takes Ashimov, playing a former undercover policeman, from Bangkok to Moscow to the Kazakh capital of Astana as he

tries to leave his past behind him. JSC Kazakhfilm, the national studio, partnered with Bangkok’s Memotion for the three-week shoot here. Filming took place in Chinatown and at the Damnoern Saduek floating market in Ratchaburi. Kazakhfilm president Yermek Amanshayev said Thailand was the perfect choice for the shoot. “There are very attractive locations, very good financial conditions, very good organisation,” he says. Filming here also furthers Kazakhstan’s goal of increasing its cinematic presence abroad, Amanshayev said. This year the country has launched seven international projects, including collaborations in America, Turkey and Russia.

Show me the movie Such partnerships also provide an opportunity for intercultural exchange. A Thai release for “Florist” is in the works. “We’re shooting a movie here in Bangkok with Thai participation, so why not take a chance and show Kazakhstan to the Thai audience?” Amanshayev mused. This audience, he said, will see a diverse, vibrant country that has served as a bridge between different worlds since the days of the fabled Silk Road. “Now in Kazakhstan you have more than 130 nationalities that are friendly to each

A fifth French film is being brought in by House cinema. The festival’s opener “Largo Winch” has been playing in a limited general release at SFW CentralWorld since last Thursday. Based on a long-running Belgian comic series, it’s a suspense thriller about the secret son of a billionaire raised in a Bosnian orphanage. It stars Tomer Sisley and Kristin Scott Thomas. A sequel is in the works, being filmed in Thailand. Director Jérôme Salle and Sisley were both here last week, scouting locations. Starting today at Apex in Siam Square is “Public Enemy

Why women should think seriously about the opting for the human papillomavirus vaccine By Parinyaporn Pajee D A I LY X P R E S S

A

ccording to a World Health Organisation report compiled in 2002, some 6,200 Thai women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year and 2,620 die from the disease. With two human papillomavirus vaccines (HPVs) now available on the market and the drastic change in teenage sexual behaviour in recent years, the Thai Gynaecologic Cancer Society and the Paediatric Infections Disease Society are working hard to

pitals in Bangkok and the provinces. >> Some gynaecological departments offer

encourage Thai women to be much more concerned about protecting themselves. “Some girls start having sex at the age of 12, which puts them at high risk for cervical cancer. Having sex before 16 increases the risk of developing cancer by six times,” says paediatrician Rudiwilai Samakoses. She adds that 75 per cent of the disease in adults can be traced back to sex during their teens. That’s way the campaign is focusing on primary prevention measures and trying to convince girls to put off sex until they are older as well as to get the vaccination before they are exposed to the human papillomavirus infection, which causes the cancer to develop later in life. “Kids have a much higher immunity than adults so if they are given the HPV vaccine when they are young, they’ll get the full advantage,” she says. The most important cause in the

development of cervical cancer is infection with a high-risk strain of human papillomavirus. More than 100 types of HPV exist and the most dangerous are types 16 and 18, which are found in 70 per cent of cancer cases. The vaccines both protect against the two high-risk types. Dr Mongkol Benjapiban says one in four sexually active women are infected with HPV but that less than 20 per cent of those will have HPV types 16 and 18. “In most cases, our body can cure an HPV infection. Besides it takes 10 to 15 years before the cancer develops. So with protection and regular screening, women should not at too much risk,” he says. Adding that women should get the vaccination within six months of their last pap smear. “Thai women tend to be shy of having the test so we need to do more to encourage them to think of the pap smear as a normal activity,” he says.

David Villa appeared closer to signing with Barcelona following a reported meeting with the Spanish champion’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain. The Valencia striker ate with Begiristain yesterday according to newspaper El Comercio. It said an agreement in principal had been reached between the club and the player. Chelsea and Man United are also vying for the 27-year-old's services, with Real Madrid pulling out of the running last week.

Man City still keen on Barca’s Eto’o Manchester City may need to show patience in their bid to bring Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o to the Premier League club, manager Mark Hughes said yesterday. “We have made an offer but there appears to be a situation between the player and his club that we cannot be part of,”

Hughes said. “We just have to sit back and see what develops. Patience is a word that has been mentioned and we may need some of it.” Eto’o’s agent Josep Maria Mesalles told a Spanish radio station on Monday that the player would see out the final year of his contract before leaving Barcelona on a free transfer next year. Hughes also said that City remains keen to sign Carlos Tevez from Manchester Hughes United. “I am a huge admirer of Carlos,” Hughes said. “Everyone is aware of his situation and we are interested.” – AP

eff Thomson believes Australia will win the upcoming Ashes series against England by a single Test despite slating the captaincy skills of Ricky Ponting. charge five years ago. “I thought Ricky was crap when he was first captain in 2004 and nothing much has improved since then,” said 58year-old Thomson at a lunch to launch the Ashes. “I’m not the only one who thinks that. I’ve always bagged him and everyone at home thinks he’s s**t at the captaincy. “He’s a great player but captaincy is a totally different thing. “I couldn’t believe it when he’d been picked as captain. There was no-one else to pick but Ponting still had no experience. “He’d only captained one side ever before. How did he get to

lead Australia with that sort of experience? “He was in a side that had very good players and now he’s got a side that has average players. He’s still left wanting. “You see it on him – he gets frustrated. He worries when the players don’t do what he’s used to with the ball when he passes it to them. “This is half the reason he’s got a bloke in there who can’t even spin a ball [Nathan Hauritz]. Simon Katich and Michael Clarke have more chance of taking a wicket than Hauritz. “Why go for a guy like that? I don’t rate Hauritz,” said Thomson.

Aussie PM picks Sobers as hero

Sir Garfield Sobers ‘had the gift of th gods about him’.

As Australia prepares to battle England for the Ashes, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd revealed yesterday that his sporting hero did not hail from Down Under and had put Australia to the sword in the 1970s. Instead of opting for home-grown greats such as Don Bradman or Shane Warne, Rudd nominated West Indian all-rounder Garfield Sobers when challenged to name his all-time favourite sports star. The Australian leader said was awed by Sobers’ achievements, including six sixes from a single Malcolm Nash over in English county cricket in 1968 and a superlative innings for the Rest of the World against Australia in 1971. “[He was] just a stupendous batsman,” Rudd said. “I thought this guy has got the gift, the gift of the gods about him. “So there you go, he’s not an Australian. ROCK-STAR WELCOME Kaka ushers in latest Real Madrid galactico era AP, Madrid

aka ushered in Real Madrid’s latest “galactico” era as the Spanish club gave the Brazil player a rock star welcome with an unveiling in front of at least 50,000 fans on Tuesday. After president Florentino Perez introduced Kaka for the first time since his US$92 million acquisition from AC Milan, the 27-year-old playmaker shook his head in delight as fans chanted his name at the Santiago Bernabeu. “Today is a very special day for me. I’m very happy about this new step in my career at Real Madrid,” said Kaka, who will wear the No 8 shirt. “Viva Madrid!” Kaka, who passed his medical earlier on Tuesday, and Cristiano Ronaldo are Perez’s major summer signings as he bids to make up for a season without silverware. “There are no words for today, it’s an unforgettable day,” Kaka said through a translator. “All of this is a great honour and responsibility, and not a negative responsibility but a positive one. I hope we can win titles and many victories.” Kaka took the stage in front of a backdrop featuring photos of iconic Madrid players Alfredo di Stefano, Raul Gonzalez, Juanito and Zinedine Zidane. Accompanied by a young fan donning the first Kaka jersey, he subsequently did a tour of one half of the 80,000-capcity stadium to sign autographs and

Real Madrid’s new player Kaka shows off his No 8 shirt during his official presentation. salute to the pumped-up masses. “He’s very good,” said 10year-old Tony Castano, clad in a Madrid jersey. “I hope he can help the club win the league and Champions League this season.” Hopes are high at Madrid, who failed to get past the first knockout stage of Europe’s toptier competition for the fifth straight season and lost the league to bitter rivals Barcelona, who became the first Spanish club to win the treble last season. “Madrid has everything in terms of a fascinating team. And it’s always been a reference for great players,” Kaka said.

MADRID HAS EVERYTHING IN TERMS OF A FASCINATING TEAM. Kaka “The project is very good. I can’t wait to play.” Kaka agreed to a six-year contract with Madrid and will team up with Cristiano Ronaldo, the world player of the year who

Madrid acquired for a transfer record US$131 million. “We’re compatible players and I think we’ll be able to play alongside without a problem,” said Kaka, who had just helped his country to victory at the Confederations Cup in South Africa, where he was named the tournament’s best player. Even Perez was given an ovation when he took the stage, with chants of “Florentino” ringing out for the first time since his initial reign from 2000-06. “We believe that this club can become the best club in the world, again,” Perez said. “He is a unique player ... and Kaka is with us.”

Manchester United said they have signed Wigan winger Antonio Valencia on a fouryear contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £16 million. “Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me,” the 23-year-old Ecuadorean told the club website www.manutd.com. “I have enjoyed my time at Wigan, but I am thrilled to have the chance to challenge for the biggest honours in club football here,” he added. “Playing in front of 76,000 fans alongside players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs will be an amazing experience. I can’t wait to get started.” United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been a fan of Valencia, who spent two seasons with Wigan and helped turn the club into an established top flight side. “Antonio is a player we have admired for some time now, having spent the last two years in the Premier League with Wigan,” Ferguson said. “I am sure his pace and ability will make a significant contribution to the team.” Valencia should fill the gap left by Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, who signed for Real Madrid for £80 million earlier this month. French giants Marseille are set to break their transfer record with a 17.5million euros fee for Porto's Argentinan captain Lucho Gonzalez. The 28-year-old will sign a four year contract with the French club suject to a medical. Gonzalez was Marseille coach Didier Deschamps main target. – A F P

Karim Benzema becomes the latest ‘galactico’.

eal Madrid have reportedly signed Lyon striker Karim Benzema for ¤35 million. Spanish media said Madrid would confirm the France international’s arrival later yesterday. The Spanish club did not comment on the reports. The 22-year-old Benzema’s arrival would take Madrid’s offseason spending to over a quarter of a billion Euros. Madrid have already bought midfielder

Kaka from AC Milan, winger Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United and defender Raul Albiol from Valencia. Madrid spent a record $131 million on Ronaldo.

Ronaldo deal completed Manchester United yesterday confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo’s world-record ¤93 million transfer to Real Madrid has been completed. An “unconditional 80 million

pounds” fee was agreed between the clubs last month and then last Friday the Spanish giants announced that the signing of the world player of the year was official. A statement on the Manchester United club website confirmed that the transfer fee had been paid. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson used the occasion to pay tribute to the Portuguese winger despite friction between him and

the player last season as the Real transfer loomed. “Cristiano has been a marvellous player for Manchester United. His six years at Old Trafford have seen him develop into the best footballer in the world,” he said. “His contribution has been a major factor in the club’s success in that time and his talent, his ability to entertain and his infectious personality have enthralled fans the world over.”

Woods pays tribute to popstar Jackson’s influence, legacy as entertainer World golf No 1 Tiger Woods paid tribute to the late Michael Jackson, calling the “King of Pop” a musical icon whose work influenced him and whose legacy lives on in today’s stars. Woods, speaking on Tuesday at the PGA National tournament he hosts this week at Congressional Country Club near Washington, said that Jackson’s music was happy and enticing. “I think everyone

here was a Michael Jackson fan – probably one of if not the greatest entertainers that’s ever lived,” Woods said. “My entire generation was influenced by his music, and just the entertainer and the songs. We listened to them. It was always happy. You always wanted to listen to his songs.” Like Jackson, Woods was a child star. Woods, a 14-time Major champion, was trotted out on television at age two

to display his golf skills the way Jackson was a generation

earlier as the lead singer as a child with the Jackson Five. “His legacy is one of the greatest entertainers,” Woods said. “I think that his draw, his appeal and his influence are in all the artists following him. “You watch these guys in how they pay tribute, how they perform, how they dance and how they sing, their mannerisms. Look at Usher, Justin Timberlake. Their moves – they are Michael’s moves.”

iger Woods is not expecting to see US President Barack Obama this week while playing host to the PGA National, but the world No 1 is staying in touch with tennis pal Roger Federer. Woods also took time from directing the event that begins today to fire back at criticism that he is “terrible” as an agent for social change and reflect on how he was influenced by former NBA star Michael Jordan. The first black golfer to win a major title visited the first black US President in the White House last April and invited Obama to the tournament, although affairs of state appear likely to keep him away. “As far as seeing the President this week, I have no plans,” Woods said. “I’ve put out an invite for him to come out here. He’s a little bit busy. There might be a couple of things on his plate.” Swiss tennis star Federer, who has 14 Grand Slam titles to match the 14 major golf crowns won by Woods, is trying to take the lead in their personal race with a title this week at Wimbledon, where he can pass Pete Sampras as the all-time leader in Slam titles. “Am I in contact with Fed? Yeah. We probably text about every day,” Woods said. “What he’s doing over there and what he has done throughout his entire career has been pretty phenomenal, just his consistency in

Tiger Woods says Michael Jordan’s relentless work for hours at practices has been an influence on his own drive to hone his game to perfection. the Slams. The biggest events, he’s always there. Every single Slam he plays in. “And for him to win 14 and now all four events has been pretty cool to see and get to know him. He works so hard off the court to be prepared, to go the distance to win. It’s just frightening how hard this guy works.” Woods admits he “loves being the greedy host” and winning when he hosts but is cheering hard for Federer as well, saying, “hopefully I can win, but more importantly, I hope he gets to 15.” Former American football star Jim Brown ripped into Woods last week in an interview with HBO, saying that

Woods was “terrible” as “an individual for social change”. “He can get away with teaching kids to play golf and that’s his contribution,” Brown said. “In the real world, man, I can’t teach no kids to play golf and that’s my contribution, if I got that kind of power.” Woods cited the work of his foundation that has had an impact on 10 million children, replying, “I think I do a pretty good job as it is what we’re trying to do with the foundation.” “I want to do it right, not just do it, and that takes time. You just don’t jump into something. You want to have a plan and I think what we’ve done so far has been very good.”

op-ranked Tiger Woods is looking forward to new rules adopted yesterday by the US PGA Tour that will limit grooves on irons starting next year, making it tougher to spin the golf ball. US PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem decided to move forward with the change in time for a US Golf Association deadline after the nine-member US PGA Tour Policy Board chose not to make a ruling on a bid to delay the move until 2011. The groove changes are aimed at making it harder for players to land the ball on the greens from the rough by limiting the amount of spin on the ball, helping courses fight becoming obsolete due to improvements in technology. They figure to give Woods another edge on his rivals. “It’s great,” Woods said. “We’ve had plenty of time to make our adjustments. We’ve known for over a couple years now what this decision was going to be and we’ve had plenty of time to make our adjustments. All the companies have been testing and getting ready for this. “It’ll be an advantage to the guys who play spin golf balls already. Guys who play harder balls are going to have to make a bigger adjustment to the grooves. There are few guys who play a softer ball. I do play a pretty soft ball. I’ll have to make less of an adjustment than most.” “The new groove rule harms the game and golfers and should be dropped,” said PING chairman John Solheim. “You can’t turn a bad idea into a good one by waiting an extra year to adopt it.”

BANGKOK

THESPORT Roger Federer has reached his 21st consecutive Grand Slam semi-final by beating Ivo Karlovic 6-3 7-5 7-6 (3) at Wimbledon. Federer used brilliant returns to break the hard-serving Karlovic once in each of the first two sets yesterday and took advantage of the Croat’s poor net play in the tiebreaker. The Swiss star set up four match points with a backhand pass and converted the second with a forehand winner. Federer never faced a break point against the 6-foot-10 Croat. Karlovic had not lost serve once in his first four matches at Wimbledon. Federer is looking for his sixth Wimbledon championship and record 15th Grand Slam title. Meanwhile, Serena Williams admitted yesterday that she would be happy to play five sets at Grand Slams as new questions arose over the credibility of the women’s game. The total time it took the Williams sisters and Elena Dementieva to negotiate their quarter-finals was half an hour less than it took Britain’s Andy Murray to get past Stanislas Wawrinka in a cliffhanger men’s fourth round on Monday. “I’m ready for five-set matches. On grass it would be fine. I can definitely play five sets,” said Serena Williams who cruised past Belarusian Victoria Azarenka 6-2 63 in her quarter-final. Serena insists that Wimbledon fans are getting value for money despite a raft of lob-sided matches. “You get to see these female players playing their best tennis not losing a set. I think that’s tremendous,” she said. “The top four seeds are in the semi-finals. Those top players are really playing their top game so definitely [fans are] getting their money’s worth.”
