There is a beautiful sea in the north, and you can see the midnight sun. Norway has something for everyone. P

olice will issue an arrest warrant for a suspect in a road-rage incident in which a taxi driver was shot to death at Bangkok’s Surawong Intersection early on Tuesday. The taxi was witnessed driving alongside a BMW car towards the intersection, with the drivers shouting at each other after one had cut in front of the other.

Fatal shots Both pulled over and the cabby, reportedly carrying a “khom phaek” baton, walked over to confront the man. The taxi driver was shot in the chest and stomach with a .32 pistol and died instantly. Bang Rak police station superintendent Colonel Ekkachai Boonwisut said yesterday that police were working hard to capture the assailant as the killing had horrified the public. He said the investigation was already at an advanced stage, following interviews of witnesses and others involved, including the BMW owner, who claims that someone had borrowed the car. Ekkachai declined to reveal the suspect’s name for fear it would affect the case. DAILY

Claiming that he knew a shortcut, the dark-skinned, long-haired taxi driver in his 30s took her along the Bang Bua Thong-Suphan Buri Road. She said that after parking in an isolated soi, possibly in Nonthaburi’s Sai Noi district, the taxi driver claimed he had a gun, raped her twice and took a video clip. “He said he had done this many times before with female passengers, and took my mobile phone, my ID card and my ATM card.”

25-year-old tour guide yesterday filed a complaint at Bangkok’s Paholyothin police station that a taxi driver raped her on Tuesday and took a video clip with his phone to blackmail her against going to the police. The victim, accompanied by her army official father, said that after a merit-making trip to Sara Buri, she was given a lift by a friend to Soi Lat Phrao. From there, she hailed a taxi for the trip back to her home in Soi Pattanakarn at about 10pm.

Similar crimes investigated The taxi driver used her card to withdraw Bt700 before driving her back to the pick-up point and threatening that he would publish the video clip to shame her if she filed a police complaint, she said. Pol Lt-Colonel Veera Ngamlert of Paholyothin police station said that his men were investigating the taxi driver’s claims to have committed similar crimes of rape, robbery and illegal detention in various jurisdictions across Bangkok. He said that police investigators in these areas would be contacted so that the hunt for the suspect could be widened. The victim was sent for a physical examination at the Police General Hospital.

More than 30,000 people per day visited the Krajiao (curcuma) flower meadows in Chaiyaphum province over the five-day holiday break, spending around Bt3 million and producing seven tonnes of garbage each day. The curcuma flowers in Pa Hin Ngarm National Park are in full bloom this year thanks to the heavy rain, said park chief Manit Phetlam.

AN ESTIMATED 150,000 TOURISTS VISITED THE KRAJIAO FLOWER MEADOWS. The rain clouds caused heavy fog in the Sub Lanka wildlife reserve in neighbouring Lop Buri, which made a spectacular sight for Pa Hin Ngarm visitors looking down on them from the park’s highest peak. Manit said the park could handle the seven tonnes of garbage but his men were having to make an extra effort to collect rubbish hidden by tourists under bushes and rocks. He urged visitors to use the garbage bins. An estimated 150,000 tourists visited the Krajiao flower meadows and spent about Bt15 million over the holiday period. The meadows are located in Thep Sathit district on the park’s Phang Huey Ridge. The flowers will be in bloom until mid-August.

THE WORLD RIP MICHAEL Jackson

Pop star won’t fade from the headlines soon The saga that was Michael Jackson’s personal life is far from over. Nothing made that more clear than the one surprise at the memorial service: the emotional speech by Jackson’s 11-year-old daughter, Paris-Michael. “Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father I could imagine,” she said, dissolving into tears and turning into the arms of her aunt Janet. “I just want to say I love him so much.” Custody of Jackson’s three children is one of the biggest legal issues still in play. In his 2002 will, Jackson made his wishes clear – his three children should remain under the care of his mother Katherine. But Debbie Rowe, the biological mother of Paris and her 12-year-old brother Prince Michael, has indicated she may seek custody. And the official determination of his cause of death will likely wait until toxicology results are completed, which could be weeks away. Jackson’s final resting place is another unknown. Some have suggested burying him at his former home, Neverland Ranch. Then there’s Jackson’s money. He died deeply in debt, and his mother is fighting to regain control of his estate.

hey sang his songs among the stars and imagined him dancing across the moon, and for a few hours, during this most public of memorials, all eyes were on Michael Jackson one last time. Some 20,000 people gathered inside the Staples Centre early yesterday morning for a sombre, spiritual ceremony watched by millions more around the world as they celebrated a man whose immense talents almost drowned beneath the spectacle of his life and fame. The pre-ceremony stillness was broken by the organ strains

T

of “Soon and Very Soon”, a gospel hymn by Andrae Crouch. “Hallelujah, hallelujah, we’re going to see the King,” a choir sang. Fans outside the venue cheered and rose to their feet. With the ceremony about to start, celebrities made their way to their places in front of the stage: Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Usher, Lionel Richie, Kobe Bryant, Spike Lee, Wesley Snipes, Lou Ferrigno, Don King, the Kardashian sisters, Magic Johnson, Brooke Shields, Larry King. Among those conspicuously elsewhere were Elizabeth Taylor, Ross and Debbie Rowe, Jackson’s ex-wife and the

mother of Jackson’s two oldest children. The ceremony began with Smokey Robinson reading statements from Jackson’s close friend Diana Ross – “Michael was part of the fabric of my life” – and then Nelson Mandela – “Be strong”.

The mourners and the fans The thousands of mourners spoke softly to those in neighbouring seats or contemplated their private thoughts. “Don’t focus on the scars, focus on the journey,” said the Reverend Al Sharpton, whose fiery eulogy was an emotional high point of the service. “Every

time he got knocked down, he got back up,” Sharpton said, and the applauding crowd jumped to its feet. While Jackson was among the most famous faces in the world, today’s megastars were largely absent. Those present mostly reflected some connection to Jackson’s life or work. The fans, clutching tickets that 1.6 million people had sought, were a visual representation of Jackson’s life: white, black and everything in between. In Asia, fans stayed awake into the wee hours. Bars across Europe held Jackson theme nights and TV stations from

Sydney to Paris cleared their schedules to broadcast the King of Pop’s memorial service. Several hundred fans gathered at a Hong Kong mall late on Tuesday to remember their idol. Holding white candles, Hong Kong singer William Chan and Taiwanese pop star Judy Chou led the audience in observing a 30-second silence. In Japan, about 100 people gathered at a Tower Records store in Tokyo to watch his videos on a big screen. In the Philippines, noontime television variety show “Eat Bulaga” said it was holding a Jackson dance contest yesterday in honour of the pop icon.

Theatre 28’s “Man of La Mancha”. “Puen Sao Phi Dib” – the official English title is “Blood Cannot Be Changed” – is cowritten and co-directed by Kuck and Jum, who also form the cast. “We’ve been looking for an opportunity to collaborate and asking ourselves what roles we haven’t done yet,” says Kuck.

“The answer was vampires!” Kuck admits the Hollywood blockbuster “Twilight” had a bearing on their choice, as did the Swedish art-house favourite “Let the Right One In”. “From those two films I realised that vampires are more a different kind of human. In their long lives they’ve witnessed many cycles of social and cultural change. “We’d be scared of them if they didn’t drink our blood. Why crowns can be a royal pain

If your dentist says you need a crown, it’s probably a sign of ageing or stress By Ibby Caputo THE WASHINGTON POST

LAT-WP

ou probably don’t feel like royalty when your dentist says you need a crown. Though you might feel as if you're paying a king’s ransom. Dental crowns, also called caps, are expensive. The dental crown procedure can be temporarily painful and cause localised swelling. The crowns require multi-

ple visits to the dentist. They can break or fall out. When done right, they can protect a smile for decades; when done wrong, they can be a real nightmare. Crowns are used to protect weak teeth; to restore m isshapen, discoloured or broken ones; and to cap implants, root canals and the teeth that anchor either end of a bridge. They are used when a tooth has decayed

needed by people who grind their teeth or clench their jaws, two common activities that lead to fractures and cracks. And in many cases they need to be replaced, sometimes more than once, over the course of a lifetime. Among people who do get crowns, the majority get their first in middle age, though sometimes even children need them. Measures to prevent the need for crowns start in childhood, when sealants can be placed on teeth to cut down on the chance of decay and the need for a large filling. Other measures include making sure your occlusion, or bite, is correct, and wearing a mouth guard when playing contact sports and a night guard to prevent clenching. It’s also not advisable to chew a lot of ice. And if you can, cut down on jawclenching stress.

Dr Tanaporn Laprattanagul Physiatrist Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy Department, BNH Hospital Send questions to healthyxpress@gmail.com.

I’m four months pregnant. I recently read in a magazine that pregnant women can exercise. What exercises can I do safely? Pregnancy causes a lot of changes in the body. Extra weight places stress on joints and muscles, so a pregnant woman often has backache and joint pain. There are also increases in blood volume, heart rate, body metabolism and oxygen requirement. Start exercise at a level that does not cause pain, shortness of breath, or excessive tiredness. Good options are swimming, brisk walking and stationary cycling because they do not require your body to bear extra weight. Start slowly, say with five to 10 minutes of exercise a day and adding another five to 10 minutes

each week until you’re exercising30 minutes a day. Always begin by stretching the muscles and warming up for 10 minutes. After exercising, cool down and stretch again for 10 minutes. Be careful about falling and injury. After the first three months of pregnancy, avoid exercising while lying on your

back, and don’t stand for long periods. Avoid brisk exercise in extremely hot and humid weather. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and avoid exercise on unstable ground. Stop exercising and call your doctor immediately if you get dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain and any loss of fluid or blood from the vagina, severe headache, uterine contraction or decreased foetal movement. Pelvic floor exercises help to make the labour easier. Contract muscles as if you were trying to stop the flow of urine, hold for a count of six, then slowly release and relax. Try to do several sets of 10 to 20 contractions a day. Well planned and carefully performed pregnancy exercises will help you stay fit throughout the pregnancy.

It won a special mention at last year’s Bangkok International Film Festival. It’s back in Bangkok at 8 tonight at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand. Non-members pay Bt150 to get in and it’s Bt150 for anyone wanting to sample the buffet laid on by Philippines Ambassador Antonio V Rodriguez. Call (02) 652 0580-1 or visit www.FCCThai.com.

Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer

By Eugenia Last

Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

Today’s Birthday: This is not the year to sit on the sidelines, waiting and watching to see how things unfold. If you hesitate, you will lose out. If you follow your feelings, you will ride the crest to victory. Take a passionate stab at your dreams, hopes and wishes and you will feel proud of your accomplishments. ARIES **** March 21-April 19 Your involvement helping others may disturb someone you are close to. Look beyond the demands being put on you and do what’s in your heart. TAURUS ** April 20-May 20 You will face opposition and emotional chaos if you aren’t clear about how you feel and what you want. An added expense will leave you in an awkward position if you do not get what you are owed.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★★★★

GEMINI ***** May 21-June 20 You have way more going for you than you realise. Your hard work will pay off and even your worst critic will have to back down and honour what you have been able to accomplish. The sky’s the limit. CANCER *** June 21-July 22 You may be tempted by what others have but your restraint will be to your advantage in the end. Now is not the time to take a risk or to pay for someone else’s shortsightedness. LEO *** July 23-Aug. 22 You’ll have plenty to contend with but, if you delegate enough of the tedious work to reliable people, it will make you look good. Your patience may be tested and your decisions questioned. VIRGO *** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Don’t get caught in someone else’s trap when it’s apparent that you aren’t in agreement on all issues. Raise the questions necessary to avoid a mishap. Don’t let your heart rule your head.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

LIBRA ***** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 The most interesting answers and insight will come from those you least expect. A problem with someone you work with will be best handled outside the workplace. SCORPIO ** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 Don’t question someone who can influence your personal well-being. Your ability to listen and go about your business without conflict will save you from an irreversible dilemma. SAGITTARIUS **** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 You’ll be tempted to sign up for anything that promises you a change of scenery, challenge or adventure. Don’t let anyone force changes on you. Love will be costly; protect your assets.

A partnership will be beneficial and will allow you more time to take care of the networking aspects. AQUARIUS *** Jan. 20-Feb. 18 Don’t give in to someone putting undue pressure on you to make a choice. Follow your own dreams and create your own philosophy. If someone truly cares, he or she will encourage you, not stand in your way. PISCES *** Feb. 19-March 20 Your ability to converse and elaborate in detail what you see happening will encourage others to take note. A social event will give you an essential component to what you are trying to accomplish.

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani claimed yesterday that his club’s only remaining transfer target ahead of the new season is Sevilla forward Luis Fabiano. Milan had been linked with a host of other players such as VfL Wolfsburg’s Bosnian forward Edin Dzeko and Real Madrid Dutch striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar. “The only ongoing negotiations are regarding Luis Fabiano, a player who our coach prefers to Huntelaar.”

Juve beat Arsenal to sign Felipe Melo Arsenal’s pursuit of Fiorentina midfielder Felipe Melo has ended in failure after the Brazilian national team player opted to join Juventus, the Sun said. Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger had been in talks to bring the 26-year-old to the Emirates Stadium. The Italian club will pay Fiorentina £17 million plus winger Marco Marchionni to get Melo on a four-year contract. Wenger may now move for Blaise Matuidi. – Bloomberg

Drogba shows remorse Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has vowed to come back a stronger player after completing a Champions League suspension for launching an on-field tirade against a referee following his teams loss to Barcelona last season. “I’ve had my share of criticism in the past and my behaviour against Barcelona is still bothering me very much because it was not right,” Drogba said. “I will do my suspension and after that, I will come back stronger.”

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo is greeted by supporters at the Bernabeu Stadium.

fter his triumphant unveiling at Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo now faces the challenge of dealing with Spain’s voracious press despite his stated desire to lead a “quiet” life in Spain and focus on winning titles. “I’m going to watch TV at home, quiet, with my feet on the table”, he told a news conference where he faced repeated questions over his capacity to deal with the temptations of Madrid’s lively nightlife. “I worked hard to get here, I am not going to go sleep under a banana tree now,” the 24-yearold Portuguese striker added after being presented before a record-setting crowd of 80,000 fans at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. His statements were greeted with scepticism by the Spanish media, given Ronaldo’s flamboyant personality and the media circus that surrounded the arrival of a the player who is rich, young, handsome – and unmarried. “We have a globally known footballer as well as a potential

cover of Vogue,” wrote daily newspaper El Mundo, adding Ronaldo does not hate nightlife as shown by his recent flirtation with Hollywood socialite Paris Hilton. Real acquired the player from Manchester United last month on a six-year deal worth ¤94 million and he will reportedly be paid ¤13 million each season, making him the most expensive player in the world. In a country where gossip magazines and television shows dedicated to celebrities are an institution, the Portuguese playmaker risks being pursued at all times by the cameras and smitten women. “He is going to have the paparazzi at his door at all hours, and being single, in Madrid the press is going to claim three or four different women are his girlfriend everyday,” said Atletico Madrid’s former Portuguese international Paulo Futre. “Ronaldo is responsible for the most expensive transfer of all time, is involved in marketing campaigns and in Spain the gossip press is very influential. This is an explosive mixture,” he told daily Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha. Futre recommended that Ronaldo live outside of Madrid, not leave his home other than

to go to work and get a permanent girlfriend if he wants to keep the media at bay. Real director general Jorge Valdano denied he had also recommended that 2008 Fifa world player of the year quickly get a girlfriend but he acknowledged that he was concerned about Spain’s gossip press. “The sports media do not concern me, the sports press is very respectful in this country,” he said at the press conference after Ronaldo was unveiled. Real has developed a major security operation device to protect the player against “overly passionate fans and press people”, according to sports daily AS. Ronaldo will depart this weekend for a ten day summer training session in Ireland with the rest of his new Real teammates which should temporarily relieve him of the intense media pressure he is now under. After that Spanish media have already reported that he will move into a 1,500 square metre apartment in a building with a swimming pool on the roof. Ronaldo’s lifestyle contrast sharply with that of Kaka, a married evangelical Christian who does not drink alcohol.

YOU WANT HOW MUCH?! Real Madrid choke on price tags for Ribery and Alonso DPA, Madrid

eal Madrid are baulking at the price tags that Bayern Munich and Liverpool have placed on Franck Ribery and Xabi Alonso, according to their general director Jorge Valdano. Real have already splashed out around ¤210 million this summer, in the most profligate spending spree that football has ever seen, on Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol. And the spree is not yet over. According to the Spanish media, controversial president Florentino Perez – who has been criticised for his profligacy by prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and Uefa president Michel Platini, among others – still has another ¤90 million available for further signings. But Valdano is disappointed at the prices that Bayern and Liverpool are demanding for their stars, prices that might actually have increased because of Perez’s spending in the past month. Valadano is quoted in sports daily Marca yesterday as saying that “it seems that Ribery is not going to leave Bayern Munich this season. “They [Bayern] have found many ways to say ‘no’, sometimes saying ‘no’ directly, sometimes talking about [a transfer fee of ¤80 million], which is another way of saying ‘no’.” Valdano added that Real would “wait for another opportunity [to sign Ribery], which will surely arrive. Madrid are reluctant to pay the ¤80 million Bayern want for Ribery or the ¤30 million Alonso would cost. has two more years left on his contract, and life is long”. Interestingly, an online poll taken by Marca shows that only 17 per cent of Real fans think that the club should splash out ¤80 million on Ribery. Valdano, the right-hand man of Real president Florentino Perez, also pointed out that the signing of Xabi Alonso was on hold, because of the price put on the midfielder by Liverpool, believed to be around ¤30 million. “There was an approach to Liverpool,” Valdano told Marca, “but they have put up the transfer fee too high for our liking. Everyone knows that he [Alonso] is a player who has al-

ways been interesting for us. He is a man who can organise, who is in a phase of maturity in his sporting career.” According to Marca and rival daily AS, because of the high price of Alonso Real are now negotiating with AS Roma for midfielder Daniel De Rossi. AS also claims that Real are close to selling unwanted striker Klass Jan Huntelaar to Bundesliga club Vfb Stuttgart, for around ¤18 million. Valdano rejected the possibility of signing Brazil rightback Maicon – for whom Inter Milan have allegedly priced at ¤40 million – because “in that position we have Sergio Ramos.”

Real Madrid sold 15 Cristiano Ronaldo shirts per minute at the club's shop at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the two hours that followed the player’s presentation on Monday. The shop sold 2,000 shirts bearing the Portuguese striker’s name and the number nine once sported by club legend Alfredo di Stefano during the period at ¤85 each for a total revenue of ¤170,000, sports dailies AS and Marca reported. In the rush, 300 black and white Ronaldo shirts were stolen. The “Cristianomania” continued on Tuesday as the adult size jerseys were sold out at the shop. Ronaldo, 24, did much better than Real’s other big name new recruit, Brazil’s Kaka, who joined the Spanish giants from AC Milan in early June for ¤65 million. During the two hours that followed the 27-year-old’s presentation at the Bernabeu stadium on June 30, the shop sold 600 Kaka shirts or five per minute. Some 75,000 people turned out for the official unveiling of Ronaldo, compared to the 55,000 who turned out to welcome Kaka to Real. Ronaldo joined Real from Manchester United in June on a six-year deal worth around ¤94 million and he will reportedly be paid ¤13 million each season, making him the most expensive player in the world. The player said the amounts involved in his transfer were justified.

razil captain Lucio is on the verge of signing for Manchester City from Bayern Munich. Representatives of the 31-year-old defender have reportedly concluded negotiations with a delegation from the English Premier League club in Berlin, clearing the way for a transfer costing in the region of US$9.8 million. Earlier this month, Lucio said he was ready to leave the

German giants after reports that new coach Louis van Gaal is not planning with him.

Inter sign Kerlon Inter Milan wrapped up a permanent deal for Brazilian attacking midfielder Kerlon. The 21-year-old spent last season at Chievo having come over to Italy from Cruzeiro but has now signed a three-year deal with the Italian champions. He is known for his dribbling

ability but he is also injury prone and made only four appearances for Chievo. He made his name at the 2005 South American under-20 championships in Venezuela where he finished top scorer. Meanwhile, Inter Milan claimed that they have ended their interest in Portugal pair Ricardo Carvalho and Deco because Chelsea’s asking price is too high. Transfer consultant Lele

Oriali told Italy’s Sky TV that any deal was now closed. “It’s not a deal as simple as it seems. Under these conditions it’s not possible for us.” It is thought that the deal is stalling because Chelsea want Inter’s Brazil right back Maicon, who the Italians don’t want to sell. Chelsea are supposedly playing hard-ball over the price for Carvalho and Deco in a bid to force Inter to sell them Maicon.

He was booed for 20 seconds prior to his opening at bat and then threw a hissy fit after striking out with the bases loaded in the fifth inning which led to his ejection. One fan held up a cardboard sign with a drawing of a syringe. Umpire John Hirschbeck sent him to the showers in the fifth inning after Ramirez flung an elbow pad over his right shoulder in the direction of Hirschbeck. The 12-time all-star Ramirez didn’t like the called third strike. “I just threw my pad when I was walking to field and he saw my pad close to him and threw me out,” Ramirez said.

The Thai tennis sensation, who was swept off her feet by the crowd of fans, also has a meeting with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to look forward to this morning. A media army swarmed the junior Wimbledon champion and junior world No 1 at the airport, scrambling to get sound bites from the Thai historymaker. Some channels wanted her live on their news programmes. The 17-year-old, the first from the Kingdom to win a Major title or to top the world rankings, will be busy with media interviews, sponsors’ visits and intensive training for the next three weeks. However, her 8.30am date with the PM at Government House this morning is the only thing on her mind

deluged with offers recently. An agency in Washington has offered to find sponsors and arrange programmes for her and she has been promised a big endorsement deal with a leading brand. Meanwhile, the Sports Authority of Thailand is expected to hand over a six-digit figure as an incentive for her her career progress. The foreign ministry is playing its part in planning to issue her a diplomatic passport. Celebrations are underway in Noppawan’s hometown of Chiang Mai, where authorities are planning to take her around the city in a procession and host a dinner party to toast her success. A special visit to the Chiang Mai zoo for a photo opportunity with the city’s other new star, the panda cub, is also on the cards. Noppawan said she would stay way from the game for five days before resuming practise for three ITF events in Canada, and the US Open. “I’d love to win the junior US Open title because it will be my last junior event. But my goal is to reach the final first,’’ said Noppawan who helped herself to satay and noodles for her first meal back in Thailand.
