hai cuisine has gained international popularity over the past decades. Our culinary diversity and intense flavours have attracted a lot of fans – chefs and diners all over the world. We Thais are so fortunate to have such food at our fingertips on a daily basis! Whenever I am in Bangkok, I love to get back to basics by spending time at local markets such as Vong-Vien-Yai market, Samyarn market, and JJ (Chatuchak) food market. In addition to all of the amazing produce, fresh meat and fish, setting foot in these markets brings back fond memories of childhood shopping with my mother.

Chiang Mai Zoo’s Snow Dome will open its doors to tourists from Saturday. The temperature inside the 580-square-metre dome is as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius. The dome sports a Chinese background and also boasts a big “slider” for tourists to ride down in donut skis. “Snow is falling here,” zoo director Thanapat Pongpamorn said yesterday, “The floor is covered with snow. I want to call this real snow, not artificial snow, because it’s exactly like real snow. The only difference is the snow here does not fall naturally.” The admission fee is Bt150 for each adult and Bt100 per child. After paying the fee, tourists will be handed a coat and shoes to keep them warm inside the dome. Each tourist will be allowed to stay inside for 20 minutes. The dome, which cost Bt70 million to construct, can accommodate no more than 50 tourists at a time. “Tourists can make a snowman or any sculpture from the snow, if they like,” Thanapat said. The dome also has a special zone for pandas. “It will be the new home to the panda family,” Thanapat said. There are three pandas at the Chiang Mai Zoo – Chuang Chuang, Lin Hui and their cub, which was born on May 27. The pandas are on loan from China. Deputy Chiang Mai Governor Chumporn Saengmanee says the snow dome will be like a second gift to the baby panda, which is now a superstar. The first gift was the threeday celebration held earlier this month to mark its birth.

SMS WARNING 2.4 million people in the high-risk group will be advised to seek swift treatment if they develop flu-like symptoms D A I LY X P R E S S
A
n estimated 2.4 million people will receive warning about Type-A (H1N1) influenza via an SMS from the Public Health Ministry because their lives will certainly be at risk if they are infected. “We are going to seek cooperation from cellphone operators,” Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said yesterday. He said people with chronic diseases face a higher death risk from the Type-A (H1N1) virus, which has already killed
18 people in Thailand. According to Witthaya, the SMS will advise people in the risky group to seek immediate medical treatment if they develop flu-like symptoms.
Health volunteers to be deployed Witthaya added that health volunteers would be deployed to monitor people. “Type-A (H1N1) influenza will likely stay with us until we have an effective vaccine against it or have developed immunity against it,” the
public health minister said. To guard against the new virus, many people have already turned to facemasks but these have run out of stock at some places. “We have sold hundreds of facemasks each day,” said Thammanoon Prasertsap, who runs a pharmacy in Nakhon Sawan. Locals in this central province have their facemasks on at crowded spots like hospitals and shopping complexes. More than 4,000 students in the province also wore the masks when they sat for the General Aptitude Test and the Professional Aptitude Test. “We have been on the watch for students with flu-like
symptoms,” Nakhon Sawan Educational Service Area 1 Office director Somboon Tiprangsee said. In Ranong, provincial public health chief Dr Thongchai Kiratihattayakorn said there were two confirmed Type-A (H1N1) cases in Kra Buri district. “It’s now impossible to prevent the spread of the disease, but we should at least be able to control its spread and reduce the fatality rate,” he said. Thongchai will convene a meeting with relevant local agencies today in a bid to tackle the deadly disease. >> For inquiries, call Hotline 1669, 1330 or 1442.

Island-hop through space Space pioneers envision launching high-end Hawaii tourists from the sand to the stars, taking islandhopping to new heights. Hawaii could become the first place where travellers can use the planes for real transportation. Planners envision planes taking off in one place, travelling through space, then landing in another, going from the Big Island to Oahu. Within a decade, space travellers could island hop from Hawaii to Japan in 45 minutes. And promoters promise a unique perspective during the flight. “Flying down the Hawaii island chain, it’s a completely different view of the planet than you’ll see when you launch from landlocked states,” said Chuck Lauer, vice president of business development for Rocketplane Global. If the plan goes forward, tourists would pay US$200,000 (Bt6.8 million) for a week-long package including spaceflight training and resort accommodations. – A P
MICHAEL WAS KILLED, SISTER LA TOYA SAYS Blames a bunch of ‘greedy hangers-on’ who saw the pop star as a ‘cash cow and got him hooked on drugs’ A F P , London
M
ichael Jackson was killed by a band of greedy hangers-on, his sister La Toya alleged in interviews with British Sunday newspapers. The King of Pop’s sister spoke about her younger brother’s death and the aftermath with The Mail on Sunday and the News of the World weeklies. “I believe Michael was murdered, I felt that from the start,” the 53-year-old said. “Not just one person was involved, rather it was a conspiracy of people. He was sur-
rounded by a bad circle. Michael was a very meek, quiet, loving p e r s o n . People took La Toya advantage of that. “Less than a month ago, I said I thought Michael was going to die before the London shows because he was surrounded by people who didn’t have his best interests at heart. La Toya said she had ordered a private autopsy. “Michael was worth more
than a billion dollars. When anyone is worth that much money, there are always greedy people around them. I said to my family a month ago, ‘He’s never going to make it to London’. He was worth more dead than alive.” Murder under Californian law can include killings that are not premeditated. La Toya accused a “shadowy” group of cutting her sibling off from his family and friends and forcing him to sign up for 50 comeback concerts in London. They saw him as a “cash cow” and “got him hooked on drugs... I think it shocked his system so much it killed him,” she claimed.
Authorities say a parolee who robbed a Michigan bank was caught when he tried to hitch a ride from an undercover police detective. Mark E White was arraigned on charges that include bank robbery and making a false bomb threat. He is being held at the Saginaw County Jail. Authorities tell The Saginaw News that White flagged down Saginaw Township Detective Scott Jackson after the bank robbery a few blocks away. White was parolled on June 16 after serving time for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and violating an earlier parole. – AP
M’sian police bust Filipino gang Malaysian police have detained 23 Filipino nationals, believed to be part of a pickpocket syndicate that has been active in the capital Kuala Lumpur. Police arrested eight men and six women as they were targeting a victim at a shopping complex, The Star daily reported. Following the arrest, police caught five other syndicate members at another shopping complex, the report added. Police formed a task force to investigate the pickpocket cases after receiving at least five reports daily over the past week, district police chief Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman said. “We raided several condominiums in the Klang Valley and arrested four men,” he said, adding that police are still seeking five syndicate members. – DPA

Groomed for stardom AJ, whose real name is KiKwang Lee, was accepted for JYP Entertainment’s training course and spent four years learning how to sing and dance. He released his debut album, “First Episode: A New Hero” on April 2 on the Cube Entertainment label It opens with the R&B-dance-styled first single, “Dancing Shoes” written by producer and songwriter Brave Brothers, the man behind the success of Big Bang. “Dry My Tears” is the second single. “‘Dancing Shoes’ is a rousing song on which I show my dancing skills, while ‘Dry My Tears’ is a sad love song that showcases my singing,” AJ says. The music video of the first single features ex-Wonder Girl Hyun Ah, who also rapped on “2009”, a hip-hop and electronica-style track. The lad who says he he enjoyed learning dance steps from some of the top trainers, is now a freshman at Seoul Art College. “Much to my delight, Rain also gave me advice on dancing,” he says proudly.

Mamma Mia gets fatter MUSICAL-THEATRE FANS have given such overwhelming welcome to production of “Mamma Mia!” that’s coming to the Muang Thai Rachadalai Theatre next month that organisers Scenario and BEC-Tero have added eight more shows. Starting August 11, it has been extended until August 30 with one show on weekdays and two shows on weekends. Tickets are priced at Bt1,000 to Bt4,000 at Thaiticketmajor. Since debuting in London back in 1998, “Mamma Mia!” has enjoyed an amazing run around the world. Ticket sales have broken records in several places including Australia, Europe and the US. ‘Mamma Mia!’, weaving the songs of Abba into a musical theatre production, opens on August 11 at the Muang Thai Rachadalai Theatre at the Esplanade.
W
ith the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing, Omega is launching a campaign for its Speedmaster watches with a photograph of the late US President John F Kennedy. The use of JFK’s image was arranged in cooperation with the John F Kennedy Library Foundation, which administers the rights to the late president’s name and image. The connection is a natural one. It was during Kennedy’s 1,000 days in office that America’s first manned space flights took place. On the final two flights in this early programme, Project Mercury astronauts Wally Schirra and Gordon Cooper wore Omega Speedmasters. The popular watch has been part of every Nasa mission since. “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achiev-
ing the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him back safely to the earth,” Kennedy said in his address to Congress on May 25, 1961. While Kennedy would not be alive when it happened, a little more than eight years after he first voiced the challenge, Apollo 11 landed on the moon on July 21, 1969 and Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface. “And,” as Omega president Stephen Urquhart has pointed out, “he did it wearing a Speedmaster.”
Omega’s Speedmaster watches are worn by US astronauts.

Prabda on the road Don’t assume that Prabda Yoon’s publishing business has gone bankrupt when you see the sign “Going Away Special – 25-35% Off”. Actually Typhoon Books is only closing its online shop temporarily, albeit right through October 2010. Prabda Prabda, who’s the son of the boss here at Daily Xpress, really is going away, however. As a writer and artist, he’s been awarded a Nippon Foundation Asian Public Intellectuals scholarship and will be doing a year’s worth of research in the Philippines and Japan. It’s something about a “line” between contemporary art and natural inspiration – way too intellectual for us, but he’ll probably write a book trying to explain it.

t age 24, Pamongkol “Pump” Chayavichitsilp owns the designer budget hotel All Seasons Sathorn, a completely revamped incarnation of the grand, 1955-vintage King’s Hotel, where celebrities like Hollywood star Kirk Douglas once stayed. “I like doing things that make people say, ‘Thank you’, or surprise them that there are still fine things like this,” says Pamongkol. “I think it’s good to do something when no one else is, even when the market isn’t quite right. don’t have to pay a lot for the kind of lifestyle this hotel offers.” Pamongkol’s father Manat founded the Meko beauty clinic and his mother Wannapar subsidised his 30year lease on the hotel. To their cash infusion Pamongkol added motivation and financial flair, plus his experience with US-based Hewlett Packard. His aim is to satisfy buyers, even if it means less profit and risk. As a child he sold glass tubes filled with coloured sand for Bt6 – the going rate was Bt10. “I did that because it was fun, but I also wanted my friends to pay less than Bt10,” he laughs. If the All Seasons Sathorn is a village, Pamongkol says, he’s the headman, making sure everyone’s satisfied. He admits he’s inadequate at managing senior staff, but has a professional running the overall system. Pamongkol bases his decisions on careful research, but there are still stressful moments, as when the construction contractor had to be replaced. To blow off steam he goes sailing, enjoying the quiet propulsion, and driving his sports car 1,000cc superbike outside town when he wants to hear a roar. Out on the waves or out on the road, the young entrepreneur is thinking next about investing in a condominium.

An old lover may come to mind when you reflect on some of the best moments in your life. Don’t be afraid to make contact with this person you can't seem to forget. Find out where you stand so you can move on or get back together. TAURUS April 20-May 20
As truthful as you might be, someone you meet who is trying to impress you will not be as honest about the past, present or the future. Ask questions and hold back your feelings until you have a better idea what’s fact and what’s fiction. GEMINI May 21-June 20
Don’t let the chemistry you have with someone confuse you. Attraction is important but so is being treated properly. Do not put up with anyone who is possessive, abusive or jealous about the people or the activities you currently enjoy. CANCER June 21-July 22
Be willing to compromise. Don’t let a disagreement stifle your love life. A passionate encounter with someone who is exciting, adventurous and fun to be with may not be lasting but it will be a memorable occasion that you shouldn’t miss. LEO July 23-August 22
You’ll attract attention. Flaunt what you’ve got to offer and see who takes the bait. You are likely to interest someone who has just as much to give in return. Meeting your match will open up options that can lead to a firm commitment.

You will be drawn to someone who can match you in every way. A strong sense of belonging will accompany someone you run into by chance. Don’t rule out a past lover. The timing was probably wrong during your first encounter. CAPRICORN December 22-January 19
It’s time to get serious about life, love and happiness. Talk about your intentions, plans and future prospects and someone who is of the same mindset will quickly find a way into your heart. Equality should be your objective.

Today’s Birthday: Learning something new will reawaken the spirit within you. An unusual friendship will encourage you to try new things. You don’t have to give up what you already have in order to enjoy a taste of different lifestyles. Visit places you haven’t been for a long time and focus forward, not back, once you have reflected on your roots. ARIES *** March 21-April 19 Stay focused. Honesty may not always be appreciated but it is necessary and, in the end, will spare your having to explain something embarrassing. TAURUS **** April 20-May 20 You will be a mystery if you keep changing and challenging everyone. You can be the winner both at work and at home if you are engaging, fast to respond and confident.
DIFFICULTY RATING ★
GEMINI ** May 21-June 20 Fight for what you want but do so with integrity or you will be blamed for not giving valid information. Choose your words carefully or someone with a smooth appeal may outmanoeuvre you. CANCER ***** June 21-July 22 A good attitude can carry you a long way, especially with work and advancement. Your ability to do a good job will get twice the recognition if the people around you also enjoy your company. LEO *** July 23-Aug. 22 You will exceed your expectations if you are diligent about finishing your work before starting something new. Keep things simple. As soon as you try to take on too much, confusion will set in. VIRGO *** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Someone is likely to cover up what’s really going on, leading you to make wrong assumptions and miss the point. Once you know the score, give individual attention to everything that needs to be addressed.

You can expect to get some interesting contributions to your plans. Be willing to compromise. SAGITTARIUS ***** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 Be prepared for the out-of-the-ordinary to manifest itself in situations you thought you had under control. Overreacting will be your downfall, so play it cool and be calm and collected.

srael reached the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time on Saturday while 32-time champions USA kept their hopes of making the last four alive. Israel stunned 2002 and 2006 champions Russia in Tel Aviv. They took an unassailable 30 lead when Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram clinched the
crucial point beating Igor Kunitsyn and Marat Safin 6-3 6-4 6-7 (3/7) 4-6 6-4. Israel will face either defending champions Spain or Germany in September’s semifinals while Russia suffered their earliest defeat in six years. Captain Eyal Ran was carried shoulder-high around the Tel Aviv venue as he took the applause of the 10,000-strong crowd. “I have to thank the team for all the remarkable work they have done,” said Ran. Israel’s previous best per-
formance in the Davis Cup was in 1987 when they reached the quarter-finals only to lose to India. On Friday, they had opened up a 2-0 lead when Harel Levy beat Igor Andreev 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2 before Dudi Sela saw off Mikhail Youzhny 3-6 6-1 6-0 7-5. In Porec, meanwhile, world No 1 pair Bob and Mike Bryan kept the USA alive in their quarter-final against Croatia with a 6-3 6-1 6-3 doubles win over Roko Karanusic and Lovro Zovko. Croatia still lead the tie 2-1 ahead of yesterday’s reverse singles.

Danai Udomchoke says he will play for the country again.
Danai Udomchoke vowed to put Thailand back in Group I when he returns to the national Davis Cup team in September for the match against China. Yesterday, Kazakhstan inflicted a gaping wound on Thailand by winning the tie 5-0. The Thai No 1, who opted out of the tie against Kazakhstan to play a professional tournament in Newport, Rhode Island, is confident that the team will beat China in the third play-off for a spot in the 2010 Zone Asia/Oceania Group I. “I think we can win the next tie and remain in Group I next year. China have new and young players coming up. Some of them are quite good in the doubles,’’ said the 110th-ranked Danai, who is on a tour of the US. After conceding three rubbers, Thailand’s woeful form continued yesterday. Kittipong Wachiramanowong was outclassed by Andrey Golubev 6-16-4 while Peerakiat Siriluethaiwattana squandered several leads before losing to Alexey Kedryuk 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (8-6).

BECKHAM FIRES BACK English midfielder says Donovan is unprofessional AFP, Los Angeles
ngland star midfielder David Beckham ripped Los Angeles Galaxy team-mate Landon Donovan as unprofessional yesterday ahead of his return to the Major League Soccer squad today. US star Donovan criticised Beckham as stingy, selfish and a poor captain in book excerpts published last week in Sports Illustrated, with Beckham answering that Donovan should have come to him with the complaints first. “It’s unprofessional in my eyes,” Beckham said. “In every soccer player’s eyes throughout the world it would be unprofessional to speak out about a team-mate, especially in the press, and not to your face. “But I’m going to turn it on a positive spin because that’s what this needs. In 17 years, I have played with the biggest teams in the world and the biggest players and not once have I been criticised for my professionalism.” Beckham rejoins the Galaxy for practice today ahead of his return match on Thursday at New York and a home exhibition on July 19 against AC Milan, the team for which Beckham was loaned for five months during the Italian season. “It’s important to get this cleared up and I will be speaking to Landon... over the next couple of days,” Beckham said. “Me and Landon will talk, but that will be a private conversation.” Donovan told the Los

Angeles Times on Wednesday that he wished he had spoken to Beckham rather than reveal his feelings to a reporter. “I’m not going to apologise for the way I felt,” Donovan said. “What I feel badly about is that I should have been a man and told David how I felt as opposed to telling a reporter. “Obviously, the lesson I learned is that it’s not something that needs to be public. It’s something we need to figure out within the team and it will get solved.” Beckham said he does not see any problem in working with Donovan, whose finishes would be vital to Beckham’s precision centreing kicks. “I’m personally
I WILL SPEAK TO LANDON OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS BUT THAT WILL BE A PRIVATE CONVERSATION. David Beckham very professional when I am on
the field,” Beckham said. “I don’t care what people say about me off the field Once I’m on the field I’m professional and if there is a chance for him to score, I’ll be giving him the ball.” The book, “The Beckham Experiment”, hits shelves on Tuesday. Beckham said that he will not be among those reading it. “This is an unofficial book that I have not participated in,” Beckham said. “I haven’t sat down one to one or spoken about the book so there is no comment where I have sat down with the journalist. There are many unofficial books that have been published about me, so this is just another one.”
Inter Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic claimed yesterday that Premier League giants Chelsea are set to make a £60 million move for him. The Swedish international said: “I am fully aware that Chelsea want to sign me and, of course, it is very flattering. They are one of the biggest teams in Europe and the Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world.” He told the News of the World: “Money is not the most important thing. I will base my decision on what’s good for me, what suits me. “It is about asking: will I still be able to be special in the league that I am going to, to the team that I am going to? “Are my qualities right for the Premier League or not?” Ibrahimovic, 27, has spent the past five years with the Serie A side who won the Italian league title this season, and has netted more than 150 league goals to date as well as 20 for his country. Meanwhile, Chelsea have appointed Frank Arnesen as their new sporting director at Stamford Bridge. The Dane previously worked as chief scout and director of youth. A statement from Chelsea read: “Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm that Frank Arnesen is to become sporting director with immediate effect. “He will continue with his roles relating to the reserves and academy but will also now take on responsibilities relating to the co-ordination of first team activity and supporting the manager.”

Glen Johnson, left, with manager Rafael Benitez.
ngland defender Glen Johnson claimed yesterday that a breakdown in trust with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho led to his departure from the Premier League club. Johnson, who this week completed a £17 million move from Portsmouth to Liverpool, accused Mourinho of breaking promises when they were both at Stamford Bridge. And Johnson said he knew
he could not continue with the club when he did not feature against Barcelona in the Champions League. “I remember the lowest point was when Chelsea were set to play Barcelona in the Champions League,” said Johnson, who later moved to Portsmouth for £4 million. “We had a couple of Premier League games to play before we played Barca, and Mourinho picked me for one of
those games and told me in front of five witnesses that if I played well I would keep the shirt. “I immediately told my agent that it didn’t matter how well I played I would be dropped – because Mourinho wouldn’t want me anywhere near the team for the Barcelona game. “Sure enough, I was voted man of the match – and I was dropped from the squad.” Johnson has still not figured
out why he did not figure in the plans of the Portuguese coach who is now with Inter Milan. “You would have to ask Jose Mourinho what his reasons were, but I know it was because he didn’t want to see me play well again and be forced to pick me for the Barcelona game. “That was the day I knew I had to leave Chelsea. Managers have to stick to their word. You have to be able to trust them.”

Webber triumphed ahead of team-mate Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari driver Felipe Massa as Red Bull continued their comeback on the earlyseason dominators Brawn whose six-time season winner and championship leader Jenson Button had to settle for fifth. Red Bull have now won two races in a row and three for the season as Brawn appeared to
suffer in cool conditions as in the last race in Britain where Vettel won from Webber. But Button still leads the standings after nine races with 68 points. Vettel moved into second with 47 points, Webber has 45.5 and Barrichello lost two places with 44 points. Webber is the first Australian since Alan Jones in October 1981, the US Grand Prix in Las Vegas, to win a race. He fractured his leg in a bicycle accident in January but made a remarkable recovery to be ready at the start of the season. There was relief all around that the conditions were dry yesterday after rain played havoc with part of the previous day’s qualifying, but the start was nonetheless tumultuous. Webber was unable to take advantage of his first career pole, he briefly touched with Barrichello in the first seconds and then also unintentionally sliced the right rear tyre of
Red Bull driver Mark Webber of Australia steers his car during the German Formula One Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring racetrack. Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren with his front wing as the Briton had a super start from fifth on the grid with the help of the power booster KERS. That ended Hamilton’s am-
bitions before the first turn as he had to limp to the pits. The world champion later considered retiring but his crew told him via team radio that he had to drive on.
Webber had to swallow the drive-through penalty which cost him valuable time, but he remained in the frame because Barrichello was held up by the KERS-powered Massa for 11 laps until the Ferrari finally pitted in the 25th lap. Barrichello latest hope of a first race win since September 2004 went up in smoke for good when refuelling on his second stop in the 31st lap went wrong and he had come in once more instead of driving the final 28 laps. Webber was untroubled up front while both Brawns had a third stop in the closing stages which allowed Vettel into second place for Red Bull’s third one-two of the campaign. Nico Rosberg of Germany finished fourth ahead of the Brawns, ex-champ Fernando Alonso was seventh in a Renault and Heikki Kovalainen eighth in a McLarenMercedes. The next race is the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 26.
