GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!

Recipe for a beautiful city By Pauline (Teng) Lamsam TV presenter

O

ur country is one of the world’s favourite tourist destinations and is celebrated abroad as “the Land of Smiles”. But in Bangkok we seem to have forgotten how to smile. Two simple things would make this city much more beautiful: more smiles on faces and less rubbish on the streets. So, everybody, let’s make an effort!

Count those medals Maths whiz kids from Thailand shine at an international competition By Supinda Na Mahachai D A I LY X P R E S S

Young Thai maths geniuses won 49 medals and ranked second only to China in an international maths competition in South Africa that ended yesterday. The Thai whiz kids travelled to Durban to compete against teams of lower secondary students from 19 countries including Australia, China, the Netherlands and South Korea in the 10th World Youth Mathematics Inter City Competition (WYMIC 2009). Thailand sent 17 of its best maths prodigies who set to work solving problems on July 2.

Adding up to gold A week and a half later, the Kingdom had bagged 14 gold medals, 19 silvers and 16 bronzes, said Basic Education Commission secretary-general Kasama Voravan na Ayudhya yesterday. Jirawat Ananrojwong and Veerachai Neeranartwong from Srinakharinwirot University’s Demonstration School Pathumwan both won gold in the individual category, while the Thai A team and D team won eight golds apiece. An international team with one Thai representative pocketed four gold medals. “Thai students’ maths skills impressed foreign media,” said Kasama, adding that the medal haul was bigger than past years. The students touched down in Bangkok with their medals yesterday afternoon. DAILY

City of Lakes

U

Known as the City of Lakes, Udaipur is located in the state of Rajasthan in northwestern India. It was once the capital of the kingdom of Mewar, ruled over for centuries by kings of the Rajput dynasties. They left behind grand palaces which, along with the beauty of Udaipur’s many lakes, have made the historic city the world’s favourite this year. “For a number of top-ranked cities – Udaipur, Cape Town, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Chiang Mai and Luang Prabang – value

daipur in India has been named the World’s Best City, taking over from last year’s winner Bangkok, in Travel + Leisure magazine’s fourteenth annual World’s Best Awards. Results from the mag’s poll of readers show that Bangkok has slipped to third behind Udaipur and Cape Town in the Top 10 Cities Worldwide category, but that Chiang Mai is a newcomer, in at No 5. Cities are judged for their sights, culture/arts, restaurants/food, people, shopping and value.

The world’s DREAM DESTINATION moves on from Bangkok to an Indian city famous for its lakes and palaces ratings were sky-high,” says Nancy Novogrod, editor-inchief of Travel + Leisure. “And while many far-flung metropolises made a strong showing, old favourites like T+L’s hometown, New York City, as well as Florence, Rome and San Francisco remain in the top 10 overall.

Holidays on a budget “This year’s results reflect our readers’ travel interests in this challenging economic reality – value, intimacy, service and discovery are top priorities. As for that old-fashioned sounding word, luxury, it’s all

about enclaves that shelter ‘stealth wealth’, from Amankora Paro in Bhutan to San Ysidro Ranch in California, where ‘casual’ and ‘laid-back’ are the names of the game.” The 2009 results will be announced in Travel + Leisure’s August issue, which comes out on July 24. The winners will be honoured at an awards ceremony on July 21 at the Cooper Square Hotel in New York. Readers were polled in the February and March issues as well as online at online at www.TravelAndLeisure.com/ worldsbest now.

Brick-throwing road vigilante an Internet hit A retired teacher has become an unlikely Internet hit in China for throwing bricks at cars whose drivers ignore red lights at a dangerous crossing. The furious 74-year-old last week took up position on an intersection in Lanzhou, the capital of northwest Gansu province, and damaged more than 30 cars before he was stopped by police. “I just wanted to catch people’s attention and tell the drivers to think of pedestrians,” he said. The unnamed man’s attacks drew wide support in Chinese cyberspace, with nearly 80 per cent of 400,000 respondents to an online poll backing him. The ex-teacher became a campaigner for road safety after a pedestrian was killed near where he lived. He successfully lobbied for traffic lights at the intersection, but drivers continued to ignore them. So he started lobbing bricks at transgressors, and was even joined by two other elderly men. – A F P

Jackson, healthy or not? Depends on who’s talking A P , Los Angeles

I

n his final days, Michael Jackson was robust and active. Or dangerously thin and frail. Begging for access to powerful prescription drugs. Or showing no signs of ever having used them. It depends on who’s talking. A dizzying collection of puzzle pieces about Jackson’s health and habits has come to light since his death on June 25. With as much as a month before a toxicology report determines the cause, more are sure to emerge. Here are some of what’s known so far:

‘Healthy, vibrant’ >> During his final rehearsal at the Staples Centre, Jackson was captured on video doing

Police in northern Bangladesh say they have arrested dozens of swindlers who conned people out of money by calling them on cellphones and pretending to be genies with supernatural powers. “It has become an epidemic here,” said Farhad bin Imrul Kayes, police chief of Gobindaganj district. “In the last three months alone we have arrested 24 of these so-called ‘kings of genies’, some of whom have even become rich in just a year,” he said. The scammers would gather personal information about their victims beforehand, Kayes added. Claiming to be genies who had descended from the sky, they would tell people to send money to a specific location, threatening a family with tragedy if they disobeyed. “They would describe themselves as kings of genies who recite Koranic verses,” sub-inspector Abdun Nur said. – AFP

Shoe fetish A man who assaulted women and then ran off with their shoes has been arrested in Germany. Police said a tip-off led them to the 27-year-old, who was detained in his car near Bonn. The man is suspected of having robbed a total of nine women of their high heels in a series of attacks in Bonn and the nearby cities of Cologne and Leverkusen. In most of the cases, the man sneaked up on his victims from behind, pushed them to the ground and made off with their shoes. – DPA

The big surprise of ‘Half-Blood Prince’ is how much the stars have matured By Jake Coyle A P , New York

W

hen the Harry Potter film series is completed, its three young stars – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint – will have inhabited JK Rowling’s universe for half their lives. Radcliffe, who is now 19, was 11 when he was cast as the boy wizard for the series’ 2001 debut. Watson, now 19, was 10 when she auditioned for the whip-smart Hermione Granger. Grint, the eldest of the trio, is 20. The series’ sixth instalment, “Harry Potter and the HalfBlood Prince”, has earned positive early reviews. Both Variety and the Associated Press suggest it’s the best yet. Radcliffe, Watson and Grint – with the end of the series and a sense of graduation looming – have emerged from treacherous child-actor stardom as remarkably grounded people and increasingly talented actors. Off-screen, Radcliffe relishes frantic chatter about indie music, the behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking and his burgeoning love of acting.

Daniel Radcliffe was 10 years old, inset, when he starred in 2001’s ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’. Now 19, he attended last Thursday’s New York premiere of ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’ with costars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

While he winces at his acting in the first two movies, the moment he realised he loved acting came while making the fourth, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”. “Something happened at the age of 14,” he says. “I started taking it more seriously, which meant I started having more fun.” He has begun moving away from Harry Potter, including a hilarious cameo in Ricky Gervais’ TV series “Extras” and a well-reviewed performance in a revival of Peter Shaffer’s play “Equus”.

SOMETHING HAPPENED AT THE AGE OF 14.I STARTED TAKING IT MORE SERIOUSLY,WHICH MEANT I STARTED HAVING MORE FUN. Daniel Radcliffe, on his approach to acting Watson did a voiceover for 2008’s “The Tale of Despereaux” and appeared in the 2007 BBC film “Ballet Shoes”, but she’s spent most of her spare time studying – something very Hermione-like. This autumn she’ll attend Brown University in the US. “The three of us have been working solidly since we were 10 years old,” she says. “I just need a little bit of normality for a while.” She plans to study literature and art, but she has also shown interest in fashion, and she’s signed with a modelling agency. The bemused Grint remains clearly grounded, even if he’s just bought a hovercraft. That playfulness is perhaps an essential quality to him. “I don’t think I ever really made the connection of acting being a career,” he says. “It was just something that was fun to do. Over the years you start to take it more seriously with different directors coming in.”

In the global recession, it was a timely reminder of the reliable revenue for fashion houses from scent, which Coco Chanel was one of the first to understand. Meanwhile on the catwalk, Lagerfeld gave a new twist to another of the Chanel classics, the tweed daysuit. He inserted an extra panel into the back of skirts, often dipping well below the rest of the hemline. Coats got similar treatment, with long flapping panels, some trimmed with fur, and tulle spewing out in between. Some silhouettes with pointed fronts looked like men’s tailcoats. Daks don’t dance With Queen Elizabeth among its customers, the veddy, veddy British label refuses to compromise on tradition By David Walter SPECIAL TO DAILY XPRESS

C

lassic British style descended like a London fog on Siam Paragon last Wednesday as clothing label Daks celebrated 115 years in business with an anniversary fashion show. “Why have we lasted 115 years? Because of the quality, the image of the brand,” explained Daks (Thailand) vice president Prapan Juengpattapong. The label began in 1804 when Simeon Simpson opened a tailoring shop in London and his smartly cut trousers quickly became popular. When the c o m p a n y moved into ready-to-wear a p p a r e l , Simpson took the first and last letters of the phrase “daddy

slacks” to create the brand name that endures today. Wednesday’s presentation at Paragon showcased a traditional look that wouldn’t have Model Rujira Chuaykua shows her best British stiff upper lip.

heavy on leather accessories, with shirts bearing Daks’ camel-and-black check pattern. For men there were handsome wool scarves, full-cut trousers and classic wool suits. For women there were stylish trench coats, cropped blazers and wide-brimmed hats. Unlike similarly positioned labels like Burberry, Daks has resisted the urge to update its look. “Some brands try to make things younger,” Prapan said, “but for us, if we wanted to make younger clothes, we’d launch another brand, because our customers still love the image.” This steadfast adherence to tradition has guaranteed an establishment following that includes Queen Elizabeth II, for whom Daks has made clothes since 1962. “A typical male customer is age 40 and up and a very established man,” Prapan said. “He works in a company at a high level, and always likes to dress well.” The label has been particularly successful in Asia since 1991, when the Sankyo Seiko group purchased the brand from the Simpson family. At Paragon, the Daks display also featured a number of limited-edition items, including Egyptian-cotton polo shirts featuring an anniversary check, a alligator-skin belt for men and an alligator-skin purse for women. Prapan said he expected the Daks style – always timeless, never trendy – to endure for decades to come. “Classic is not old or young. Classic is classic!” Daks’ signature check graces a range of accessories.

Ironing out wrinkles without Botox How can I get rid of or minimise fine lines around the eyes? Is there an alternative to Botox available?

Yes, there is always something new in the fast-moving world of cosmetic procedures. If you are just starting to notice fine lines around your eyes, the Fraxel refining treatment is probably your best option. This treatment uses the science of fractional photothermolysis, which treats your skin with thousands of tiny microscopic laser beams, leaving the surrounding area untouched for faster healing. You can get back to your normal activities immediately. Fraxel refining should give you long-term improvement due to new collagen formation in the skin around the eyes. This results from laser pulses that penetrate deep into the skin and stimulate collagen production which restores elasticity. You should see an immediate difference, with more improvement over time – a fading of the lines and even a slight tightening of the skin below the eyes.

Touch me, I’m a Jet Samsung’s newest smart phone has plenty of fun options By Smiley Byte D A I LY X P R E S S

T

he latest touch-screen phone to emerge from the Samsung stable, the Jet S8003 is compact, good-looking and user-friendly, with great multimedia performance and a large and bright screen. It’s powered by an 800MHz processor and comes with TouchWiz 2.0, which is an improved version of the touch screen user interface. The fast processor allows the phone to run up to seven different programmes simultaneously and display the home screen and menu screen in a snap. Its 3.1-inch AMOLED screen is impressively bright and crisp with 800x480-pixel resolution and viewable even under the direct sunlight. It also displays video clips beautifully. Thanks to its fast processor, the Jet plays DivX, Xvid, MEG4 and H.264 video files smoothly. The Jet also comes with a five-megapixel camera. In our test, shutter lag was a mere 0.2 seconds and the shots were clean for a mobile phone. The new interface allows the Jet to have three customisable home screens. You can drag and drop applications or widgets on the three home screens and you can swipe the screen to change to the next one. Fun parts of TouchWiz 2.0 are Media Gate 3D user interface and Motion Gate. Media Gate 3D can be accessed with a button on the right side of the phone and displays a cube that you spin to access one of six multimedia applications, such as the music player and

video player. Select an application and the 3D interface will display subsequent layers of screens. The Motion Gate is the motion-recognition engine that lets you control applications like the music player by shaking or tapping the phone. Smart Unlock is another nice feature of the new interface. It allows you to unlock the phone by writing a predetermined letter onscreen. The 3.5mm audio jack sits along the top of the Jet and it also supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. Although 3G connection is not yet available, TrueMove customers will enjoy browsing webpages and downloading multimedia files with Jet using Wi-Fi connection from any of the True Wi-Fi hotspots in the city. It’s reasonably priced too, retailing for just Bt16,500.

ASTROLOGY

Today’s Birthday: Love may cost you this year if you are too easygoing or generous. Walk away from any situation that doesn’t benefit you. It’s OK to be tough with the ones you love and to show who’s boss. Take action and follow through with your plans.

Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

ARIES *** March 21-April 19 You’ll have trouble controlling your emotions. Before you blurt out something you cannot retract, think of the positive things you can say to make whatever situation you face better. TAURUS *** April 20-May 20 Take the time to listen to complaints and figure out a way to compensate anyone who appears to be getting ripped off. Taking care of stressful situations will provide an opportunity you don’t expect. GEMINI **** May 21-June 20 Your ability to talk convincingly will prove that you are the right person to negotiate for a group. You may win over the majority but there will always be someone who doesn’t buy into your charm.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★★

CANCER ** June 21-July 22 Take heed of the person questioning your ability or an idea you are trying to push. There may be a flaw that, if fixed in time, can spare you grief. There is a lesson to be learned. LEO ***** July 23-Aug. 22 The time to captivate people with your charm and know-how is now. Reach all the people you need on your side. The backing you get from groups or people who are far away will be most gratifying.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

VIRGO *** Aug. 23-Sept. 22 This is a great time to consider making a move or to alter the conditions under which you are now living. A joint effort will prove to be more valuable than you anticipated. Love is on the rise. LIBRA *** Sept. 23-Oct. 22 You’ll have a few choices to make. Don’t neglect what has to be done. Clear your responsibilities before you engage in entertainment. Trips will be enticing and can pay off. SCORPIO *** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 Don’t take on more than you can humanly do. To make promises that you cannot fulfil will hurt your reputation. It’s better to undersell your abilities and surprise people if you want to get ahead. SAGITTARIUS ***** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 You may think you have everything in order and everyone eating out of your hand but think again. There are things going on behind your back that can influence you financially. Protect your assets.

Taboo

Joint efforts will not work well. AQUARIUS **** Jan. 20-Feb. 18 You can make vocation changes or work at building a small, home-based business. Now is a great time to find love or to nurture the relationship that already exists. Change your appearance. PISCES *** Feb. 19-March 20 Use your creative talents to come up with something that can be lucrative, entertaining and will utilise your skills to the fullest. It was the first race in Toronto for the IndyCar Series. Starting from the pole, Franchitti was both lucky and good in winning his third race of the season and regaining the series points lead over Target Chip Ganassi team-mate Scott Dixon. – AP

End of road for F1 driver Bourdais? Sebastien Bourdais’ stint with Toro Rosso is over, according to team-mate Jaime Alguersuari. Bourdais’ future with the team was under scrutiny at the German Grand Prix, where the Frenchman retired due to a car problem. “He’s a very good driver,” said Alguersuari, a 19-yearold Spanish reserve driver. “But it looks like this year he hasn’t given it his all like he’s supposed to give.” – AFP

uan Carlos Ferrero was master of the Marbella bullring on Sunday when he steered defending champions Spain into the Davis Cup semi-finals while Croatia knocked out 32time winners USA. Former world No 1 Ferrero, playing his first Davis Cup tie since 2005, replaced out-ofform Tommy Robredo for the decisive last rubber of the

quarter-final against Germany and he responded in style. The 29-year-old beat Andreas Beck 6-4 6-4 6-4 to give Spain, without injured world No 2 Rafael Nadal, a 3-2 win in the tie which was played on a specially-built clay court at Marbella’s Puerto Banus bullring. “I was lucky to be able to play this match. These are always difficult. I was a bit more nervous than usual but I was able to play solidly and without making mistakes which I think was key,” said Ferrero. Earlier, Philipp Kohlschrei-

ber defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-4 6-2 1-6 2-6 8-6 to level the match at 2-2. Spain will play their semi-final at home where they will tackle Israel who made sure of their first appearance in the last four by seeing off Russia. Croatia saw off the USA in Porec, taking a 3-1 lead in their quarter-final when Marin Cilic defeated James Blake 6-3 6-3 46 6-2. The Czech Republic eliminated 2008 runners-up Argentina 3-2 with Radek Stepanek beating Juan Monaco 7-6 6-3 6-2 in the decisive rubber.

Marat Safin has been popular with fans at the Thailand Open.

Thai fans will get to see Russian giant Marat Safin, perhaps for the last time, at the PTT Thailand Open, which will be held at the Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani, from September 26 to October 4. The former world No 1, who is on a farewell tour, hopes to win one more ATP tournament before ending his brilliant career at the end of the year. Safin, the winner of the US Open and Australian Open, has always been one of the darlings of the Thai crowd due to his charismatic personality and aggressive game. His best showings in Thailand were two semi-finals appearances – in 2004 when he lost to Andy Roddick and 2006’s defeat to the eventual champion James Blake. But the tournament’s main attraction will be Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who will make his first appearance in the Kingdom. Frenchman JoWilfried Tsonga is also set to return to defend his title. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will be invited to preside over the opening ceremony on October 1. Tickets for the PTT Thailand Open start at Bt300 and are available at all Thaiticketmajor outlets from Saturday.

ASHES CRICKET

THE GREAT ESCAPE Ponting left fuming at ‘time-wasting’ as England save Test AFP, Cardiff

ustralia captain Ricky Ponting slammed England for a lack of sportsmanship after a controversial conclusion to a dramatic drawn first Test here at Sophia Gardens. Ashes-holders Australia were poised to go 1-0 up in the fiveTest series before England’s last-wicket duo James Anderson (21 not out) and Monty Panesar (seven not out) held out for the final 40 minutes to salvage an unlikely draw. But twice during the 10th wicket pair’s 69-ball stand, England 12th man Bilal Shafayat ran onto the field to offer Anderson batting gloves while physio Steve McCaig was eventually ordered off by the umpires after making it to the middle on the second occasion. Ponting made his feelings plain to reporters after stumps. “I don’t think it was required. He [Anderson] changed [gloves] the over before,” Ponting said. “I don’t think they’d be too sweaty in one over. “I’m not sure what the physio was doing, I didn’t see anyone call for the physio, as far as I’m concerned, it was pretty ordinary really. “But they can play whatever way they want to play. We came to play by the rules and the spirit of the game, it’s up to them to do what they want to do.” “I was unhappy with it,” Ponting, man-of-the-match for his 150 in Australia’s only innings of 674 for six declared, said. “I don’t want to make that

It’s not the reason we didn’t win.” There had been two flashpoints earlier in the day which suggested tempers were fraying. Before play got underway, England batsman Kevin Pietersen and Australia quick Mitchell Johnson clashed while both teams were warming up on the outfield and during the match itself Stuart Broad and Victoria pace bowler Peter Siddle appeared to be involved in a shoulder-barging incident. But Ponting played down the impact of both dust-ups, saying of the former: “It was a case of a few guys on the ground taking each others’ space.” And, as for the second, which

pretty quickly. “It was probably accidental. Move on. It was a great game of cricket and we should be remembering that.” Anderson said the draw was a morale-booster. “It is huge for us,” said Anderson, who batted for 72 minutes. “To go to Lord’s in a couple of days now still level in the series is a massive boost us.” Panesar praised “cricket buddy” Collingwood for helping him with his batting. “He’s been throwing me balls and working really hard with me on my batting and it has paid off today.” Ponting also defended his decision to bowl part-time spinner Marcus North in the closing stages.

Tamim Iqbal cracked a maiden Test hundred to lead Bangladesh to 321 for five in their second innings against West Indies in the opening Test on Sunday. Tamim, who made 128, took advantage of a depleted West Indies attack, operating on an unresponsive pitch in sweltering temperatures, to smash 17 fours from 243 balls in close to five and a half hours of batting to give Bangladesh the platform for a lead of 252 at the stumps on the fourth day. Another middle-order collapse however, undermined Bangladesh’s progress in the final session before Shakib Al Hasan (26 not out) and Mushfiqur Rahim (28 not out) batted through the last 90 minutes to share an unbroken stand of 54 for the sixth wicket to get them back on track. Tamim held centre stage and arrived at his milestone from 206 balls, when he guided a delivery from offspinner Ryan Austin into square cover, and scrambled a single as a bout of cramp surged through his right-leg. Fortune had favoured Tamim twice in his innings though. He was 30 when Floyd Reifer dropped him at first slip off Darren Sammy, and he was 76, when Omar Phillips muffed a straightforward chance at mid-wicket off Austin. The left-handed opener, however, kept his nerve, and anchored two vital stands. He shared an opening stand of 82 with Imrul Kayes, who scored 24, and then added 146 for the second wicket with Junaid Siddique.

Fawad Alam square-drives during his innings of 102.

ebutant Fawad Alam scored an unbeaten century as Pakistan produced a remarkable turnaround to claw their way back in the second Test against Sri Lanka yesterday. The tourists, who were bowled out for 90 in their first innings, hit back to dismiss Sri Lanka for 240 and then cruised to 178-1 in their second knock by stumps on the second day.

Left-handed Alam led the way with a determined 102 not out to give Pakistan a lead of 28 runs with nine wickets in hand on a dry pitch that appeared to have eased out under the hot sun. The fearless 23-year-old from Karachi moved to 98 by lofting left-arm spinner Rangana Herath for a six over mid-wicket and then flicked the next ball for two runs to reach the coveted century.

Alam put on 85 for the first wicket with Khurram Manzoor, who made 38 before he was caught behind by wicket-keeper Tillakaratne Dilshan off Herath. Skipper Younus Khan, who was dismissed for zero in the first innings, was unbeaten on 35 at stumps after adding 93 for the unbroken second wicket with Alam. Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara rotated his seam

and spin attack in short bursts to gain quick breakthroughs, but Pakistan’s batsmen were not found wanting a second time. Pakistan’s fightback was launched by seamer Umar Gul and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who took four wickets each to keep Sri Lanka’s first innings in check. The hosts lost their last seven wickets for 63 runs after starting the day at a comfortable 164-3.

MEMORABLE MOMENT Ji’s dramatic putt gives her US Women’s Open win AP, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

outh Korea’s Ji Eun-hee made the US Women’s Open memorable for more than a lingering LPGA Tour hierarchy dispute. Former champion Cristie Kerr failed to hold the lead, and Ji punctuated a frantic final round by rolling in a lengthy birdie putt on the 72nd hole to win the Women’s Open by one stroke on Sunday. “I didn’t even dream about winning this tournament, but, well, I did it, and I think this is going to be one of the most memorable moments in my life,” Ji said. Ji seized the moment, capping an even-par 71 with a near 20footer for birdie to claim the title. Her putt spoiled a strong tworound rally by Candie Kung. Ji recovered from two bogeys in her first four holes and a double-bogey at the 10th, making three birdies over the final six holes to finish even with a 284 at Saucon Valley Country Club. Ji claimed the biggest prize in golf in just her second try, after

finishing tied for 42nd last year.

Stricker wins John Deere Steve Stricker followed one of his best performances with 36 solid holes to win the John Deere Classic by three strokes on Sunday. Stricker, who tied the course record Saturday, fired a 7-under

64 in the fourth round after starting the day with a thirdround 68 to finish at 264 for the tournament. That was good enough to give him his second PGA Tour win this year and sixth in all, not to mention a heavy dose of momentum heading into the British Open to go with the $774,000 winner’s cheque. He also moved to second behind Tiger Woods in the FedEx Cup standings. Local favourite Zach Johnson (64, 66), Brandt Snedeker (68, 65) and Brett Quigley (62, 67) all tied for second at 17 under. Meanwhile, Bernhard Langer chipped in for eagle on the 18th hole on Sunday to win the 3M Championship, his second straight win on the Champions Tour. His 7-under 65 gave him a 16under 200 for the tournament, one shot better than Andy Bean. Standing about 10 feet off the back fringe, Langer softly chipped the ball on the edge of the green and watched it roll about 10 feet into the hole.

Two in a row for Kaymer A P , Luss, Scotland

M

artin Kaymer won for the second week in a row, closing with a 2under 69 in the rain and sunshine at Loch Lomond on Sunday for a two-shot victory in the Scottish Open. Kaymer moves up to No 11 in the world ranking, and his confidence is even higher heading to the British Open. The 24-year-old German became the first player since Ian Woosnam in 1990 to win the two European Tour events before the British Open, which starts Thursday at Turnberry. “Everyone asks me about the third win in a row,” Kaymer said with a smile, aware of the expectations. “We are playing a major next week. And the field is going to be the best we have all year long. “After last week and this week, I feel really good,” he said. “My game is solid, so hopefully, I can keep it up.”

WHITE IS MIGHTY English veteran conquers Hawkins in a pressure-cooker SangSom final DAILY XPRESS

olden oldie Jimmy White scooped a million-baht jackpot in the plush surroundings of the Montien Riverside Hotel yesterday morning. The 47-year-old former UK champion and six-times runner-up in the world championship defeated Barry Hawkins 8-6 to win the SangSom 6-red World Grand Prix after a three and half hour marathon. White, who entered the tournament courtesy of a wild card, was never among the favourites and started the title showdown on Sunday night as underdog. In the first round, he scraped through to the knockout stages by finishing fourth in Group E with three wins and two losses. He gathered steam as the tournament progressed and

In the semi-finals, White accounted for another former

world professional champion, Mark Williams, to the delight of his large army of Thai fans. In the final, played in front of packed house and broadcast live on television, Hawkins got off to a flyer, taking a 2-0 lead. But once White found his form, the momentum swung one way then the other as the two final-

ists went for broke. The exchanges produced some high-quality safety play and break-building. Though neither player made a maximum 75, White hit the highest break of 61 to go 5-4 up in the match. Try as he might, Hawkins failed to get in front again. “I had a great chance to win the second frame but fluffed it,” said White. “However, it wasn’t the end of the world and I’m delighted to have won here. I now believe that six-reds tournaments like this are here to stay and will become a permanent feature in snooker playing countries.” The Sangsom tournament was declared a great success after attracting massive crowds from day one on July 7. Leading sports broadcasters such as ESPN, Sky Sports and Eurosport will be broadcasting a 14-hour package of tournament highlights to billions of viewers in more than 110 countries.

R

eal Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini says winger Cristiano Ronaldo does not have a star mentality. “He’s as I expected him to be. He is the first to arrive at a training session, he has fully integrated into the squad, he doesn’t act as a star,” he said. “He is a very talented but normal player who is devoted to Real Madrid. His image is very different to how he is as a player.” Pellegrini said he hopes the squad will be completed by the end of the month. “The sooner the better. July 27 would be good because that’s when all our internationals return,” he said. The Chilean coach said recruiting Spanish international Xabi Alonso from Liverpool would not be easy. He also denied press reports that Real want to unload its entire contingent of six Dutch players.
